Chairman’s Message from the Board May I take this opportunity to wish all the readers of this magazine a belated happy and prosperous new year. During 2014 the Network has provided more opportunities for its members to enjoy social events. We have arranged a greater number of coach trips from Northampton and thanks to Sally Mackrel, we are able to offer them to members in Wellingborough and the eastern parts of the County. We are looking for more volunteers to help us extend our events to the other parts of the county. If you have been able to visit our new website online, you will have seen an exciting new image, a site that is more geared to the needs of the older generations in the county. The website is easier for our volunteers to update and add new information, it is also cheaper to maintain than the previous version. It actually funds itself and provides a small income. The website has been designed as a foundation for the future of the Network, to make it easier for members to gain knowledge of, and access to the events we organise. The major issue for the Network in the next year is funding. Since the withdrawal of funding by the County Council two years ago, we have been concentrating on reducing the cost of what we do.We have succeeded in reducing the running costs of the network substantially. However we will not be able to sustain the production and posting of our Magazine for much longer. We have asked all members with access to the internet to access our magazine online or pay £5 each year to receive a copy delivered by the Royal Mail. We will also be asking members who have no internet connection to pay postage to continue to receive the Magazine. Please see page 6 for details of how payment can made. I am sorry that this had to happen, but the cost of postage has recently increased. The popularity of the Magazine and the new events has also resulted in considerable growth in membership, and thus in costs. Ray Hutchins - Chairman

www.northantsfiftyplus.co.uk Letter to all Northants 50+ Network Members Although you may have picked up a copy of this magazine at one of the many public places around the County, the majority are sent out to individual members by post. Up until now we have been able to deliver the magazine to your door free of charge; this has only been possible with the help of outside funding, which unfortunately is no longer available to us. In these austere times, we are now asking for your help so that we can continue to post out future copies of the magazine. We know how popular this magazine is and how so many of you enjoy receiving your own personal copy through the letter box. It is with this in mind that we are happy to continue posting out copies to our members for a small contribution of £5.00 per year. Your donation of £5.00 can be made simply by either; a) By sending a cheque (payable to ‘Northants 50+ Network’) to Northants 50+ Network, c/o St. Giles Parish Office, St Giles Terrace, Northampton, NN1 2BN, or b) By payment directly into our bank account (Please use your name as a reference): HSBC Bank Sort Code 40-35-04, Account Number 92694972 Sincere thanks for your continued support. Jesus Christ

See the worlds oldest story, the worlds greatest rock musical!

Jesus Christ Superstar, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ground-breaking rock opera, returns to the stage in 2015 in an explosive new production which comes to Northampton’s Royal & Derngate from Monday 16th to Saturday 21st of March as part of a major UK tour. Telling the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus through the eyes of Judas Iscariot, Jesus Christ Superstar exploded onto the musical scene in 1971. Stunning audiences, it changed the face of musical theatre forever. As compelling today as it was at its inception over 40 years ago, Jesus Christ Superstar features some of musical theatre’s most legendary songs from: ‘Don’t Know How to Love Him’, ‘Everything’s Alright’ and ‘Gethsemane’ and the infamous ‘Superstar’. Leading performer Glenn Carter takes the part of Jesus, a role he has played in the West End, on Broadway and on film. Welsh Baritone, Rhydian Roberts - 2007 X Factor runner up joins the cast as Pontius Pilot. Australian star Tim Rogers, who plays Judas Iscariot, most recently starred in Carousel at the Arcola Theatre in London. He has also featured in Whistle Down the Wind (UK Tour and West End), West Side Story, Jersey Boys, The Full Monty, and the title role in Jekyll & Hyde. X Factor finalist, Rachel Adedeji will join the cast as Mary Magdalene direct from the tour of Thriller Live. Jesus Christ Superstar bursts onto the Derngate stage from Monday 16 to Saturday 21 March, with performances at 7.30pm each night and matinees at 2.30pm on Wednesday and Saturday. Tickets – priced from £19 to £36* – can be booked by calling the Box Office on 01604 624811 or online at: www.royalandderngate.co.uk. * A transaction fee of £2.80 applies to telephone and website bookings only. Does not apply in person, or to Groups and Friends, and is per-transaction, not per-ticket. For your chance to win one of two pairs of tickets to see Jesus Christ Superstar on the opening night of Jesus Christ Superstar, Monday 16 March at 7.30pm, simply answer the following question:

What’s on in Northampton

The Third Thursday Club Christ Church,Wellingborough Road, Northampton meets on the third Thursday of each month (except August), at 2.15pm - 4.30pm approx. Cost £1 includes light refreshments. I run a group for 50+ people at Christ Church, Wellingborough Road, Northampton. We began in 1997, providing additional interest for people living in the immediate area. We were delighted it proved so successful, with some members travelling considerable distances to attend the meetings. Because of our success, growing from 18 to over 100 at its peak, we have received funding from the National Lottery and Borough with grants enabling us to buy equipment and furniture for the Club. We have excellent speakers and entertainment covering a wide range of subjects, generally illustrated with photographs, displays or demonstrations. Apart from being entertained for the afternoon, all enjoy the chat and optional raffle. We have managed to include a low cost coach tour during the summer months, which has also proved very popular and at Christmas we hold a party with buffet and entertainment. To give you an idea of the range of subjects, the Club has already covered: beekeeping, birds, animals, flowers, holidays near and far, cigarette cards, ghostly places, wood carving, a mayor’s life, the Royal Mail, carnival, the Royal British Legion, charities, pharmacy, trades, channel swimming, crime prevention, various collections, antiques, musical memories, aspects of Northampton, strange laws and seasonal items......the list goes on. The doors are always open for new members who will be made to feel at home immediately. We have wheelchair access and toilets for the disabled. Further details are available from Miriam Solomon (01604 628822).

Legal Advice Column Why should I make a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)?

Northampton 8 Castilian Street, Northampton, Northamptonshire NN1 1JX Telephone: 01604 828282 Fax: 01604 609630 Email: wills@franklins-sols.co.uk

Milton Keynes Silbury Court, Silbury Boulevard, Central Milton Keynes MK9 2LY Telephone: 01908 660966 Fax: 01908 558000 Email: wills@franklins-sols.co.uk

A Property and Financial Affairs LPA can be used to appoint one or more attorneys to make a range of decisions, including the buying, selling or remortgaging of property, operating a bank account, dealing with tax affairs, and claiming benefits on your behalf. This can give a general power to any appointed attorney over all your finances. A Property and Financial Affairs LPA can also be used while you still have capacity and are still well enough to make decisions for yourself unless you have specified that it cannot. There may be some practical benefits for you if your attorneys have the power to help you manage your affairs now, even if you are fully able to do so yourself. A Health and Welfare LPA will authorise your attorney to make decisions about where you should live, consenting to or refusing medical treatment on your behalf and decisions about your day-to-day care, including diet and dress. A Health and Welfare LPA can only be used when you no longer have the capacity to make the particular decision affecting your health or personal welfare. To get expert advice about making an LPA please contact us:

Across the County Winter Stroll/Walk and Lunch – Harlestone Firs Tuesday 10th February 2015 Meet in the Garden Centre Car Park at the rear where the Car wash is located at 10.30am (for long walk) and 11.00am (for Short walk). Calling all District Members, join us to enjoy the great outdoors at Harlestone Firs followed by lunch at the Harlestone Garden Centre. The idea is for you to take a gentle stroll for up to an hour or a bit more of a strenuous walk for 1½ – 2 hours. The short walk will be suitable for most levels of fitness and mobility, and on the flat. The longer walk will be a little more strenuous. We will then all meet for lunch at the Garden Centre. Many of you may be familiar with the Garden Centre, but for those who are not, you will find many other things on offer apart from plants, tools and seeds. There is a book department, clothes, pet’s corner, furniture, and a lot of gift items and cards. The café / restaurant has a good reputation. Some of you may just like to visit the Garden Centre and have lunch, thus avoiding the exercise! Please confirm by Friday 6th February 2015, whether you will be doing the short or longer walk and whether you would like lunch. (Martyn needs to give the restaurant an idea of numbers who will want lunch). To book a place for this event please email or telephone Martyn White. Provide a contact telephone number and / or email address. This is so the organiser can contact you if there are any last minute changes due to weather conditions etc.

Important Information Eligibility dates for an older person’s bus pass If you were born before 6 April 1950 you were eligible for an older person’s bus pass from your 60th birthday. However, if you were born after 5 April 1950 you will have to wait a little longer. For the younger ones amongst us, born between 6 October 1954 and 5 April 1968, you will have to wait for your 66th Birthday.

Retirement age Default retirement age (formerly 65) has been phased out – most people can now work for as long as they want to. Retirement age is when an employee chooses to retire. Most businesses don’t set a compulsory retirement age for their employees. If an employee chooses to work longer they can’t be discriminated against. However, some employers can set a compulsory retirement age if they can clearly justify it. It’s an employee’s responsibility to discuss when and how to retire with their employer. This could include phasing retirement by working flexibly. Members of occupational pension schemes need to discuss with their pension scheme managers what impact a change in working hours or income might have on the pension, whether the scheme supports phased retirement and working beyond the scheme’s normal pension age. Employers may or may not be able to agree requests. If an employee is unhappy with their employer’s decision, they can challenge this at an employment tribunal. Retirement is a form of resignation - employers and employees must follow the right procedures for this.

State Pension age Retirement age is not the same as State Pension age which can be between 61 and 68, depending on when someone was born and if they’re male or female. Anyone can work past State Pension age.

on the humourous side . . . The neighbours thought it was odd, but 93 year old Malcolm was dating again. One Monday morning Malcolm woke up with a funny feeling that something important happened last night. It was during breakfast that he finally remembered what it was. He had proposed to his date, Freda. But he just couldn’t seem to remember what she answered. So Malcolm picked up the phone and called her. “Hi Freda”, said Malcolm, “I have a funny question for you, do you remember last night when I proposed?” “Oh my gosh” gushed Freda, “I’m so glad you called, I knew I said yes to somebody, but I just couldn’t recall who it was!”
