The Power of the Dog

Fri 19 Nov 18:00 Sat 20 Nov 15:30 Sun 21 Nov 20:15 Mon 22 Nov 18:00 Tue 23 Nov 13:15 & 18:00 Wed 24 Nov 13:30 Thu 25 Nov 13:00 Jane Campion’s long-awaited return to big-screen film is an unflinching western that ripples with prickly tension with Benedict Cumberbatch as a hard-bitten rancher.

Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons star as the Burbank brothers, Phil and George, who run a successful cattle ranch in the hills of Montana. The brothers are inseparable. However, Phil is outraged out of all proportion when George abruptly takes a wife (Kirstin Dunst). Phil is clearly a brutal and cruel man but beneath the sneer there is another side to him. Campion captures devastating moments of isolation, during which his façade begins to crack. It’s a brawny, brooding drama about the wreckage caused by men, reflected in Johnny Greenwood’s haunting and atmospheric score. Benedict Cumberbatch is a revelation in the lead role. Spencer

Fri 19 Nov 15:30 & 20:45 Sat 20 Nov 18:15 Sun 21 Nov 18:00 Mon 22 Nov 15:30 Tue 23 Nov 20:45 Wed 24 Nov 16:30 Thu 25 Nov 15:45 During her Christmas holidays with the royal family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England, Diana decides to leave her marriage to Prince Charles.

Spencer spotlights three days in the dissolution of Charles and Di’s marriage. Working off a sharp script by Steven Knight, Chilean director Pablo Larraín spins the headlines and scandals into a full-blown Gothic nightmare, an opulent ice palace of a movie with shades of Rebecca at the edges and a pleasing bat-squeak of absurdity in its portrayal of the royals. If Kristen Stewart was a surprise choice for the role of Diana, it proves to be divine casting with her uncanny magnetism and her ability to mesmerize the camera even in moments of stillness. Terrific support from Timothy Spall, Sally Hawkins and Sean Harris. Germany/Chile/UK 2021 Pablo Larrain 111m

Auditorium Talk

Sondheim on Stage & Screen Sat 20 Nov 12:30 (Auditorium) Tickets £6.50 (Friends/Under 25’s - £5) Professor Simon Barker of the University of Gloucestershire and members of the Chichester Cinema Education Team celebrate the long life and unique artistry of Stephen Sondheim. Simon Barker, Rosemary Coxon and Patrick Hargood celebrate the long life and unique artistry of Stephen Sondheim. They discuss stage and screen productions of key works and explore Sondheim’s sources, his philosophy, and his legacy, showing clips from productions and interviews. Sondheim’s work has been seen as a kind of cultural encyclopaedia for the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries and this event will demonstrate Sondheim’s range and versatility. It was conceived in relation to the Covid-postponed production of ‘Assassins’ at Chichester Festival Theatre. Sondheim’s take on the American Presidency seemed particularly relevant in the high days of Trump – but the power of Sondheim’s work is that it never lacks cultural resonance or renewed topicality. In a period of unprecedented cultural anxiety in the USA, there is no better time to pause and reflect on Sondheim’s creative wisdom. 120m

Promises Les Promesses

Fri 19 Nov 13:00

Sat 20 Nov 20:45

What should it profit a woman, if she gains the whole world but loses her own soul? Isabelle Huppert’s Mayor Collombet faces tough choices in this adroit and absorbing tale of French political life. Clemence Collombet is nearing the end of her second and final term as mayor. Her faithful chief of staff Jazid (Reda Kateb) grew up in a run-down housing estate and it has been Collombet’s pet project to renovate and restore the area. However when she receives a discreet offer to join the government she risks derailing everything she has worked for compromising her friends and integrity. ‘Promises’ is cleverly plotted and captures a sense of the wheeler dealing, gladhanding and backstabbing that are par for the politician’s course. Huppert is excellent but it is Kateb and his righteous anger that you will remember. (Subtitles) France 2021 Thomas Kruithof 98m 4

Frida. Viva la Vida

Sun 21 Nov 15:15 Thu 25 Nov 20:45 An unconventional, visually sumptuous dive into the psyche of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo via her paintings.

Director Giovanni Troilo swerves his documentary away from traditional nuts and bolts biography in favour of what he sees as Kahlo’s state of mind as portrayed in a series of key paintings. This makes a refreshing change from the timeline and talking heads approach of your standard visual arts documentary. Italian actor Asia Argento is our guide throughout the film reading letters, diaries and private confessions. The film succeeds in drawing together key themes in Kahlo’s work: the drama of her physical pain (a spinal injury), her sense of theatre and her ability to transmute gruesome anatomical detail into symbolic architecture. Titane Sat 27 Nov 20:45

Mon 29 Nov 15:30

Julia Ducournau’s Palme d’Or-winning film is a nightmarish yet mischievously comic barrage of sex, violence, lurid lighting and pounding music. Alexia, a young girl gets injured in a car accident. To save her life, surgeons insert a titanium plate into her head, which seems to give her a metal fetish. Cut to years later: Alexia (now played by Agathe Rousselle), head still half-shaved, makes a living stripping at car shows. She is a solitary and forbidding figure, even more so when she suddenly murders an aggressive fanboy who follows her to her car. Later that night, she crawls into a flame-painted gas-guzzling Cadillac for another rapturous reunion, only this time it’s sexual. Provocative, daring and fearlessly original, this film is impossible to pigeonhole defying all sorts of cinematic conventions and tropes. (Subtitles) France 2021 Julia Ducournau 108m

Set in Britain’s Home Counties between the wars, Australian star Odessa Young plays Jane, the maid at a grand house ruled over by the sad Mr and Mrs Niven (Colin Firth and Olivia Colman) whose children were killed in the war. Jane is enjoying an affair with a well-born young neighbour who is destined to marry someone else. The grand lesson that “Mothering Sunday” teaches, and the one Jane must learn from tragedy after tragedy is that neither the pleasure or the pain, is ever permanent. This is a languorous, dreamy film that draws you into an irresistible and sensual story that is beautifully shot and acted. UK 2021 Eva Husson 110m

Edgar Wright follows up ‘Baby Driver’ with a neat genre swerve into supernatural territory. Ellie (Thomasin McKenzie) moves to a creepy old bedsit owned by a creaky old lady, Miss Collins (Diana Rigg). Ellie rather loves this shabby spot, as it brings her closer to the mid-century yesteryear she feels she was probably meant to live in. As Ellie sleeps in her new bed on the first night, she is whisked off into a very lucid reverie, where she witnesses, or has become, an aspirant Londoner of the 1960s, a singer and dancer looking to break into the nightclub circuit. Fri 3 Dec 15:45 Sun 5 Dec 16:00 Filmmaker, innovator, scientist, author and researcher, this is the extraordinary story of Jacques Cousteau.

Cousteau described himself as “a witness to change.” This visually compelling biography implores a new generation to bear witness too. Breezy, simply presented, and plenty illuminating, ‘Becoming Cousteau’ shirks the typical talking heads doc format in favour of shrewdly selected archive materials accompanied by compelling voiceover testimony. The Hand of God È Stata la Mano di Dio

Fri 3 Dec 18:00 Sat 4 Dec 20:15 Mon 6 Dec 15:00 Wed 8 Dec 16:15 Thu 9 Dec 18:00 The story of a boy in the tumultuous Naples of the 1980s. Sorrentino’s most personal film yet is a tale of fate and family, sports and cinema, love and loss.

At 16, Paolo Sorrentino returned home to find that both his parents were dead, killed by a carbon monoxide leak. On the night of the tragedy, Sorrentino was inside a football stadium, watching Diego Maradona play for his local team, Napoli. Afterwards, he would say – not wholly joking – that Maradona saved his life. ‘The Hand of God’, no surprise, is Sorrentino’s most nakedly personal film to date, almost to a fault in the way it jettisons the cool distance of ‘The Great Beauty’ or ‘Il Divo’ in favour of a sweaty, close-up evocation of youth. Redemption is the long game in Paul Schrader’s ‘The Card Counter’. Tell takes Cirk with him on the road, going from casino to casino until the likely trio set their sights on winning the World Series of poker in Las Vegas. But keeping Cirk on the straight-and-narrow proves impossible, dragging Tell back into the darkness of his past. ‘You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more thrillingly necessary use of the filmmaking form this year.’ The Observer. Tue 7 Dec 18:30

How to live knowing that there are only a few months left? This is the painful question asked by director Emmanuelle Bercot in this powerful drama led by a formidable Benoît Magimel and Catherine Deneuve. A son in denial of a serious illness. A mother facing the unbearable. And between them a doctor and a nurse fighting to do their job and bring them to acceptance. They have one year and four seasons to come together and understand what it means to die while living. There is no miracle cure here – no Hollywood deus ex machina moment to save the day. Bercot’s film faces its subject head on without attempting to provide misplaced hope of a sunnier conclusion. Catherine Deneuve received a standing ovation at Cannes for her stunning performance. Satyajit Ray The Big River Flows Sat 11 Dec 10:30 (Auditorium) Tickets £6.50 (Friends/Under 25’s - £5) This is the rescheduled talk originally programmed for 30 October To mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of the true greats of the cinema, Bengali director Satyajit Ray, Patrick Hargood, Deputy Education Officer, looks back at his extraordinary body of work in a talk featuring a wide range of clips. Born into a middle class Bengali family, Satyajit Ray did not attend film school, and was one of the first to make the transition into movies from the world of advertising. He was, however, an avid cinema fan as a young man, and, on a visit to England, watched dozens of films, making notes on the techniques he observed. It is nevertheless a miracle on a par with ‘Citizen Kane’ that his very first film, ‘Pather Panchali’, should turn out to be such a masterpiece of realist cinema. This talk will include a breathtaking range of clips from ‘The Apu Trilogy’, ‘The Music Room’, ‘Charulata’ (pic right), and many others. 120m

Kaamelott First Installment Kaamelott - Premier Volet

Fri 10 Dec 13:00

Sat 11 Dec 18:15

We end this 18-film season of Francophone cinema with a comedy medieval fantasy - an offbeat retelling of the legend of King Arthur and his knights.

Ten years have passed since Arthur Pendragon renounced the throne of Kaamelott and disappeared after handing it over to Lancelot du Lac, who has since established a reign of terror over the kingdom of Logres. The Knights of the Round Table have disbanded and formed pitiful pockets of resistance against Lancelot. Everyone wonders what happened to Arthur, from Lancelot (who wants him dead and put a bounty on his head) all the way to the oppressed smallfolk (who want him to return). But does Arthur really want to bother coming back to Kaamelott to help them once more and reclaim the throne? More than a decade ago, French actor, director, writer, composer and comedian Alexandre Astier started a new TV series called ‘Kaamelott’ (the spelling is deliberately awry). It is often described as France’s equivalent of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and there are certain similarities and also with the Gallic time travelling comedy hit and its sequels ‘Les Visiteurs’. Shichinin no Samurai

A poor village under attack by bandits recruits seven unemployed samurai to help them defend themselves in Akira Kurosawa’s influential classic.

The Seven Samurai

Kambei the samurai assembles his team of reluctant warriors to participate in a probable suicide mission that will bring them neither money nor fame. The second act explores the strained relationship between villager and warrior class while the last act depicts the epic final battle when the bandits attack the village. The shoot lasted a year but the results are there to be seen with its sublime photography and choreography. Kurosawa’s approach to historical realism was utterly committed with meticulously researched sets and costumes with masterful deployment of natural lighting and weather conditions to enhance the drama. Milo’s former boss (Dwight Yoakam) hires him to head to Mexico to bring his troubled 13-year-old son Rafo (Mexican TV star Eduardo Minett) back from his mother. Milo agrees and after finding the kid in the middle of a cockfight, he starts the journey back home. The unlikely pair faces an unexpectedly challenging journey, during which the world-weary horseman finds unexpected connections and his own sense of redemption. The simple sincerity about what’s worthwhile in life is the movie’s reason for being. Nothing more and nothing less. JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass

Sun 12 Dec 19:45 Wed 15 Dec 15:15

Thirty years after his film ‘JFK’, filmmaker Oliver Stone takes viewers on a journey though recently declassified evidence in the assassination of President Kennedy. Joined by Oscar-winning narrators Whoopi Goldberg and Donald Sutherland, as well as a distinguished team of forensics, medical and ballistics experts, historians, and witnesses, Stone presents compelling evidence that in the Kennedy case “conspiracy theory” is now “conspiracy fact.” This two-hour film races by, feeling like a potently told murder mystery in search of the truth. Whether we ever get the latter is up for debate, but Stone’s persistence is heroic. His indefatigable efforts at unearthing evidence and holding it up to the light for intensive examination properly keeps the case for the prosecution alive. US 2021 Oliver Stone 115m 20

Természetes Fény

Denes Nagy’s powerful debut feature confronts several moral dilemmas thrown up by war and people in extremis. A profound contemplation of war, ennui and guilt.

Natural Light

1943, World War II. A long winter is about to begin in the endless territories of the occupied Soviet Union. István Semetka is part of a special Hungarian unit tasked with travelling from village to village looking for partisan groups. After his commander is killed, Semetka takes over and must lead the survivors back to an occupied village where an unspeakable act is committed. Petite Maman

Fri 17 Dec 18:15 Tue 21 Dec 12:45 Wed 22 Dec 20:15 A girl meets her mother as a child in the woods in a moving jewel of a film about memory, friendship and kin.

Céline Sciamma’s beautiful fairytale reverie is occasioned by the dual mysteries of memory and the future: simple, elegant and very moving. Nelly has just lost her grandmother and is helping her parents clean out her mother’s childhood home. One day she meets a girl her same age building a treehouse to whom she bears a striking resemblance. The pair become fast friends while incrementally, the girls’ eerie similarities yield revelations that merge events of the past with those of the present. The jewel of this year’s Berlin Film Festival. (Subtitles) France 2021 Céline Sciamma 72m

House of Gucci

Starring Adam Driver as Maurizio and Lady Gaga as Patrizia, ‘House of Gucci’ follows their story from their marriage to the divorce, Maurizio inheriting the brand after his father’s death, and Maurizio’s murder in 1995, when he was shot and killed on the steps of his Milan office. It all leads up to Patrizia’s (aka the “Black Widow”) trial. It appears that the devil, in fact, does not wear Prada. Based on Sara Gay Forden’s book ‘The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder Madness, Glamour, and Greed’ which is as apt a description as you’re likely to read. Great support from Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Salma Hayek and Jared Leto. Canada/US 2021 Ridley Scott 160m

Tosca ROH

Thu 16 Dec 19:30 Sun 19 Dec 14:30 Tickets £17.50 (Friends/Students £15.00) Set in Rome at the time of Napoleon’s invasion of Italy, Tosca is a roller coaster story of love, lust, murder and political intrigue.

Three outstanding casts bring alive the excitement of one of the best loved operas in the repertory: Puccini’s Tosca. From the demonic chords with which it famously begins to the violent twist of its shock ending, the tension never lets up for a moment. Into the romantic world of an idealistic painter, Cavaradossi, and his sensuous lover Tosca comes the malevolence of Baron Scarpia, Chief of Police, with fatal results. Jonathan Kent’s taut and intense production with Paul Brown’s historically charged designs wonderfully evokes the dangerous atmosphere of Rome in 1800, where love and evil come – thrillingly – face to face. 140m including interval

A Boy Called Christmas

Sun 19 Dec 12:15 Mon 20 Dec 12:30 Tue 21 Dec 14:30 Wed 22 Dec 18:00 Fri 24 Dec 11:30 You can’t get more Christmassy than this delightful origin story of Father Christmas in which Nikolas goes in search of his father.

An ordinary boy (with a loyal pet mouse and a reindeer at his side) sets out on an extraordinary adventure to find his father who is on a quest to discover the fabled village of Elfhelm. Having eventually reached Elfhelm he learns that humans are hugely unpopular and he’s thrown into a dungeon with a hungry troll and a truth pixie, who can’t tell lies. No spoilers here but it’s fair to say Nikolas goes on quite the journey, in more ways than one! Based on the children’s book by Matt Haig it stars Maggie Smith, Kirsten Wiig, Sally Hawkins, Jim Broadbent, Toby Jones, Joel Fry and Stephen Merchant. UK 2021 Gil Kenan 106m

The Shop Around the Corner

Sat 18 Dec 15:30 Thu 23 Dec 17:45 This 1940 film is one of Ernst Lubitsch’s finest and most enduring works, a romantic comedy of dazzling range starring James Stewart and Margaret Sullivan.

Alfred Kralik (James Stewart) and Klara Novak (Margaret Sullavan) are employees at Matuschek and Company, a general store in Budapest. Klara and Alfred are constantly at odds with each other, butting heads and disagreeing on almost everything. Both are enamored of their respective pen pals, who serve as welcome distractions in their lives. Little do they know, they are each the other’s pen pal and, despite outward differences, have unwittingly fallen in love through their letters. It’s a very different taste from the 1998 remake, ‘You’ve Got Mail’. Lubitsch demonstrates that romantic comedies, like popcorn, can be enjoyed salty as well as sweet. USA 1940 Ernst Lubitsch 99m

‘Silent Night’ follows a group of old friends who - in true British fashion and while the rest of the world faces impending doom reunite to celebrate Christmas in the comfort of an idyllic country home. Burdened with the inconvenience of mankind’s imminent destruction, they adopt a stiff upper lip, crack open another bottle of prosecco and continue with their festivities. Starring Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode and Roman Griffin Davis (the boy from ‘JoJo Rabbit’), the film veers from bleakness to wild black comedy. Watching these revelers interact feels like they have long come to terms with their impending doom and are determined to make the best of it. With a lively soundtrack that includes some classic tunes of the season (Jose Feleciano’s ‘Feliz Navidad’ for one), plus a rock out, dance your socks off scene set to ‘Fame’, this is fun and unique apocalyptic Christmas fare. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology. Director Cary Joji Fukunaga takes over the reins from Sam Mendes but don’t expect any genre busting re-invention, instead settle for the splendid locations, stunts, gadgets and glamour. Don’t Look Up

Mon 27 Dec 14:15 Tue 28 Dec 17:30 Wed 29 Dec 20:00 Two low-level astronomers must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth.

Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), an astronomy grad student, and her professor Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) make an astounding discovery of a comet orbiting within the solar system. The problem: it’s on a direct collision course with Earth. The other problem? No one really seems to care. Turns out warning mankind about a planet-killer the size of Mount Everest is an inconvenient fact to navigate. With the help of Dr. Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan), Kate and Randall embark on a media tour that takes them from the office of an indifferent President Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her sycophantic son and Chief of Staff, Jason (Jonah Hill), to the airwaves of The Daily Rip, an upbeat morning show hosted by Brie (Cate Blanchett) and Jack (Tyler Perry). In flight from her past, possibly from herself, she stares at the sea as though it’s done her a great wrong and eats alone at the bar, repelling anyone who draws close. She haunts the resort like a ghost while other ghosts are haunting her. We get hints of her past when she is played very well by Jessie Buckley. Cinderella Delayed Live from The Met

Tickets £20.00 Friends/Students £17.50 Kids £10 Continuing a treasured holiday tradition, the Met presents a new installment in its series of abridged opera adaptations for family audiences.

Laurent Pelly’s storybook staging of Massenet’s ‘Cendrillon’ is presented with an all-new English translation in an abridged 90-minute adaptation, with mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as its rags-to-riches princess. Maestro Emmanuel Villaume leads a delightful cast, which includes mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo as Cinderella’s Prince Charming, soprano Jessica Pratt as her Fairy Godmother, and mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe and bass-baritone Laurent Naouri as her feuding guardians. French author Charles Perrault’s originally story was published at the end of the 17th century, and the opera and its music preserve references to that era of lavish court entertainments and clear-cut distinctions of social hierarchies. 110m no interval

Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn

Babardeala cu Bucluc sau Porno Balamuc

Mon 3 Dec 20:45 Thu 6 Dec 17:45

Winner of the Golden Bear - Berlin 2021. The mock trial of a teacher puts history on the stand in this peculiar revenge story.

Emi, a schoolteacher, finds her reputation under threat after a personal sex tape is uploaded onto the internet. Forced to meet the parents demanding her dismissal, Emi refuses to surrender. This is a film in three loosely connected parts: a walk in the city of Bucharest, then a playful essay on obscenities, all culminating, in the third part, an incendiary comic confrontation. As playfully provocative as its title, ‘Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn’ uses a potentially prurient premise to highlight the hypocrisy of societal norms. The first essential fiction movie to be made about the coronavirus pandemic, as well as about the way it’s driven so many people mad. This is thought-provoking, very well performed and states its case remarkably clearly, even with the 18-certificate collar around it’s preverbial neck. (Subtitles) Romania 2021 Radu Jude 106m

Hope Håp

Sun 2 Jan 17:45 Tue 4 Jan 12:30 The relationship between artist-partners Tomas and Anja is put to the test after Anja gets a life-threatening diagnosis.

Anja lives with Tomas in a large family of biological children and stepchildren. For a number of years the two adults have grown independent of each other, with creative jobs in parallel worlds. When Anja gets a terminal cancer diagnosis, their modern life breaks down and exposes neglected love. By getting to know each other anew, they unconsciously become principal characters in a love story, finally learning to truly love each other after a long life spent together. Andrea Bræin Hovig and Stellan Skarsgard are transcendent while Maria Sødahl directs with languid confidence. The effect of ‘Hope’ is anything but depressing; it’s reassuring proof of art’s ability to comfort as it clarifies. (Subtitles) Norway 2019 Maria Sødahl 130m 30

Spielberg was obsessed with the original cast soundtrack of West Side Story before the original film had been made. He used to imagine the action and dancing that might accompany it. Finally, he has translated idle daydreams into celluloid magic with a blistering reworking of one of cinema’s most iconic films. The story focuses on teenagers Tony and Maria who fall in love despite having affiliations with street gangs, the Jets and Sharks in 1950s New York. Romeo and Juliet is the source material here with Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) as Tony and newcomer Rachel Zegler as Maria. Expect plenty of focus on the racial elements and dazzling choreography.
