Chichester Cinema at New Park As the only UK festival devoted exclusively to contemporary and classic French cinema, the French Film Festival UK has in 18 years earned an unrivalled reputation as a showcase for contemporary French cinema in the UK and abroad. We are delighted to once again present it here for you. The festival brings the best of Francophone cinema from France, Belgium, Canada and French-speaking African territories, starring such French luminaries as Catherine Deneuve, Isabel Huppert, Juliet Binoche, Gerard Depardieu, Vincent Lindon, Romain Duris and Yves Montand. The collection includes an animation, and restored classics. The French Film Festival UK is supported by Greenwood Wealth Services. I have recently attended the UK Cinema Association Conference in London, and I can report that things are looking rosy for the industry. Fuelled by the recent Bond film, most regular cinemagoers have returned to the cinema. We want to assure our audience that we have not taken our eye off your safety. Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons star as the Burbank brothers, Phil and George, who run a successful cattle ranch in the hills of Montana. The brothers are inseparable. However, Phil is outraged out of all proportion when George abruptly takes a wife (Kirstin Dunst). Phil is clearly a brutal and cruel man but beneath the sneer there is another side to him. Campion captures devastating moments of isolation, during which his façade begins to crack. It’s a brawny, brooding drama about the wreckage caused by men, reflected in Johnny Greenwood’s haunting and atmospheric score. Benedict Cumberbatch is a revelation in the lead role. If Kristen Stewart was a surprise choice for the role of Diana, it proves to be divine casting with her uncanny magnetism and her ability to mesmerize the camera even in moments of stillness. Simon Barker, Rosemary Coxon and Patrick Hargood celebrate the long life and unique artistry of Stephen Sondheim. They discuss stage and screen productions of key works and explore Sondheim’s sources, his philosophy, and his legacy, showing clips from productions and interviews. Sondheim’s work has been seen as a kind of cultural encyclopaedia for the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries and this event will demonstrate Sondheim’s range and versatility. It was conceived in relation to the Covid-postponed production of ‘Assassins’ at Chichester Festival Theatre. Sondheim’s take on the American Presidency seemed particularly relevant in the high days of Trump – but the power of Sondheim’s work is that it never lacks cultural resonance or renewed topicality. In a period of unprecedented cultural anxiety in the USA, there is no better time to pause and reflect on Sondheim’s creative wisdom. 120m

What should it profit a woman, if she gains the whole world but loses her own soul? Isabelle Huppert’s Mayor Collombet faces tough choices in this adroit and absorbing tale of French political life. Clemence Collombet is nearing the end of her second and final term as mayor. Her faithful chief of staff Jazid (Reda Kateb) grew up in a run-down housing estate and it has been Collombet’s pet project to renovate and restore the area. However when she receives a discreet offer to join the government she risks derailing everything she has worked for compromising her friends and integrity. ‘Promises’ is cleverly plotted and captures a sense of the wheeler dealing, gladhanding and backstabbing that are par for the politician’s course. Director Giovanni Troilo swerves his documentary away from traditional nuts and bolts biography in favour of what he sees as Kahlo’s state of mind as portrayed in a series of key paintings. This makes a refreshing change from the timeline and talking heads approach of your standard visual arts documentary. Italian actor Asia Argento is our guide throughout the film reading letters, diaries and private confessions. The film succeeds in drawing together key themes in Kahlo’s work: the drama of her physical pain (a spinal injury), her sense of theatre and her ability to transmute gruesome anatomical detail into symbolic architecture. She is a solitary and forbidding figure, even more so when she suddenly murders an aggressive fanboy who follows her to her car. Later that night, she crawls into a flame-painted gas-guzzling Cadillac for another rapturous reunion, only this time it’s sexual. Ellie rather loves this shabby spot, as it brings her closer to the mid-century yesteryear she feels she was probably meant to live in. As Ellie sleeps in her new bed on the first night, she is whisked off into a very lucid reverie, where she witnesses, or has become, an aspirant Londoner of the 1960s, a singer and dancer looking to break into the nightclub circuit. With a libretto by Sarah Ruhl, adapted from her acclaimed 2003 play, the opera reimagines the familiar tale from Eurydice’s point of view. Yannick Nézet-Séguin oversees the momentous Met premiere from the podium, leading Aucoin’s evocative music and an immersive new staging by Mary Zimmerman. Soprano Erin Morley sings the title role, opposite baritone Joshua Hopkins as Orpheus and countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński as his otherworldly alter-ego. At 16, Paolo Sorrentino returned home to find that both his parents were dead, killed by a carbon monoxide leak. On the night of the tragedy, Sorrentino was inside a football stadium, watching Diego Maradona play for his local team, Napoli. Afterwards, he would say – not wholly joking – that Maradona saved his life. ‘The Hand of God’, no surprise, is Sorrentino’s most nakedly personal film to date, almost to a fault in the way it jettisons the cool distance of ‘The Great Beauty’ or ‘Il Divo’ in favour of a sweaty, close-up evocation of youth. Redemption is the long game in Paul Schrader’s ‘The Card Counter’. Told with Schrader’s trademark cinematic intensity, this revenge thriller tells the story of William Tell (Oscar Isaac) who sets out to reform a young man seeking vengeance on a mutual enemy from their past. Tell takes Cirk with him on the road, going from casino to casino until the likely trio set their sights on winning the World Series of poker in Las Vegas. But keeping Cirk on the straight-and-narrow proves impossible, dragging Tell back into the darkness of his past. ‘You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more thrillingly necessary use of the filmmaking form this year.’ The Observer. This is the painful question asked by director Emmanuelle Bercot in this powerful drama led by a formidable Benoît Magimel and Catherine Deneuve. A son in denial of a serious illness. A mother facing the unbearable. And between them a doctor and a nurse fighting to do their job and bring them to acceptance. They have one year and four seasons to come together and understand what it means to die while living. There is no miracle cure here – no Hollywood deus ex machina moment to save the day. Our ushers give half an hour of their time before the film to assist ticketholders entering the auditorium. In exchange they get to watch the film for free! Born into a middle class Bengali family, Satyajit Ray did not attend film school, and was one of the first to make the transition into movies from the world of advertising. He was, however, an avid cinema fan as a young man, and, on a visit to England, watched dozens of films, making notes on the techniques he observed. It is nevertheless a miracle on a par with ‘Citizen Kane’ that his very first film, ‘Pather Panchali’, should turn out to be such a masterpiece of realist cinema. We end this 18-film season of Francophone cinema with a comedy medieval fantasy - an offbeat retelling of the legend of King Arthur and his knights.
Ten years have passed since Arthur Pendragon renounced the throne of Kaamelott and disappeared after handing it over to Lancelot du Lac, who has since established a reign of terror over the kingdom of Logres. The Knights of the Round Table have disbanded and formed pitiful pockets of resistance against Lancelot. Everyone wonders what happened to Arthur, from Lancelot (who wants him dead and put a bounty on his head) all the way to the oppressed smallfolk (who want him to return). But does Arthur really want to bother coming back to Kaamelott to help them once more and reclaim the throne? A poor village under attack by bandits recruits seven unemployed samurai to help them defend themselves in Akira Kurosawa’s influential classic.

Kambei the samurai assembles his team of reluctant warriors to participate in a probable suicide mission that will bring them neither money nor fame. The second act explores the strained relationship between villager and warrior class while the last act depicts the epic final battle when the bandits attack the village. The shoot lasted a year but the results are there to be seen with its sublime photography and choreography. Kurosawa’s approach to historical realism was utterly committed with meticulously researched sets and costumes with masterful deployment of natural lighting and weather conditions to enhance the drama. This is a film in three loosely connected parts: a walk in the city of Bucharest, then a playful essay on obscenities, all culminating, in the third part, an incendiary comic confrontation. As playfully provocative as its title, ‘Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn’ uses a potentially prurient premise to highlight the hypocrisy of societal norms. The first essential fiction movie to be made about the coronavirus pandemic, as well as about the way it’s driven so many people mad. Anja lives with Tomas in a large family of biological children and stepchildren. For a number of years the two adults have grown independent of each other, with creative jobs in parallel worlds. When Anja gets a terminal cancer diagnosis, their modern life breaks down and exposes neglected love. By getting to know each other anew, they unconsciously become principal characters in a love story, finally learning to truly love each other after a long life spent together. Maria (Naomi Rapace) and Ingvar (Hilmir Snær Guðnason) are unhappy – there is a sense of loss surrounding them as they go about their business on their remote farm. When one of their sheep gives birth to something unexpected the couple are initially delighted as the prospect of a family life dawns. With its overtones of horror ‘Lamb’ is nonetheless a genuinely affecting story about parenthood and the burden of loss. However, to explain much more about ‘Lamb’ would be to spoil the experience. Spielberg was obsessed with the original cast soundtrack of West Side Story before the original film had been made. He used to imagine the action and dancing that might accompany it. Finally, he has translated idle daydreams into celluloid magic with a blistering reworking of one of cinema’s most iconic films. The story focuses on teenagers Tony and Maria who fall in love despite having affiliations with street gangs, the Jets and Sharks in 1950s New York. Romeo and Juliet is the source material here with Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) as Tony and newcomer Rachel Zegler as Maria. Expect plenty of focus on the racial elements and dazzling choreography.
