WAYNE HATSWELL We go into tonight’s match against Carlisle on the back of a good point against Exeter on the road at the weekend but will be aiming to get all three points this evening. We played some great stuff at St.James Park, some of the football we played was really good, I’m just disappointed with the second goal. When you’re away from home you’ve got to defend your box and I felt we did that really well in the first half, but goals change games and getting the equaliser gave them a lift. I’m not going to be too despondent, we picked up a point away but we’ve got to turn that into a win tonight and it’s a good week. It’s another point on the board and another one away from home so that’s pleasing.

AMBER FROM THE ATTIC with Chris Shingler
Tonight, we look back at the programme from an exciting 3-3 draw with our visitors Carlisle United, played out here at Rodney Parade just four years ago…
Four of the five players featured on the glossy front cover of this £3 issue are no longer with us; the exception being Matty Dolan, who enjoyed a decent afternoon’s harvest in the field by scoring twice in this topsy-turvy encounter, played out on Saturday the 12th of December 2017. Those seen on the cover but since departed are Dan Butler, Frank Nouble and David Pipe who appear to be celebrating a recent Joss Labadie goal. This was of course our former manager Michael Flynn’s first full season in charge and in his column that opens the 64-page issue in earnest on page five, Mike notes that we are coming into the clash with the Cumbrians hot on the heels of back-to back-wins. Indeed, Swindon Town had been beaten on their own front lawn thanks to a Ben Tozer header, whilst Cambridge United had been knocked out of the FA Cup by a 2-0 score-line that had rewarded us with a third-round home clash with Leeds United to look forward to. Flynnie also doffs his cap to athletics coach Christian Malcolm, another Newport boy, who had beaten him to the ‘Welsh Coach of the Year’ award that had
been held the previous Monday at the Celtic Manor. The t hre e-page player interview featured striker Padraig Amond who had settled into life in a Newport County shirt pretty quickly since his early season move from Hartlepool. He was telling Ben Catton about his career up to this point. Podge, who of course is currently on loan at Exeter City, told of how he felt we needed to cut out a few silly mistakes and that we were more than capable of going on a good run, like we had been earlier in the season, and also reckoned January and February were going to be crucial months. This very column l o o ke d a t a n October 1963 clash between the two sides when Carlisle had spanked us

4-1 at Somerton Park. Hmmm, so, quickly moving on, we turn a page or two and a much happier result is reflected upon in Phil Tanner’s ‘Today’s the Day’ where our 5-0 lamping of Thurrock in a 2009 Conference South fixture is covered. For the record, Gary Warren opened the scoring with “A scrappy effort” following a freekick from Jamie Collins, Craig Reid notched the second from the spot after Ashan Holgate had been bundled over inside the box and Charlie Henry helped himself to a third in a breath-taking first 45 minutes. Charlie fed Reidy for his second and our fourth after 55 minutes and then it was skipper Warren who turned provider for Craig to claim the match ball with his third of the night. After poring over some great match photos from the Cambridge win, courtesy of the lens of Nicola Johns, we have a two-page report on a recent Checkatrade Trophy defeat at home to Cheltenham Town; a game in which a player I’d completely forgot about in Lamar Reynolds had scored his first competitive goal for us, while another young man by the name of Owen Taylor made his first-team bow. All you ever needed to know about Carlisle United is incoming courtesy of Richard Taylor and in ‘Blues legend’ Rich looks at Jimmy Glass, who only ever played three games for the men from Brunton Park but of course is forever etched in their history as the goalkeeper who unbelievably scored the goal that saved the Cumbrians from the dreaded drop in May 1999. In ‘County Connections’ our popular 1970s forward Willie Brown features and that £1,500 we spent on the Falkirk-born striker in August 1970 was definitely money well spent as Willie became a very popular figure during his time in our then tangerine shirt. In an additional piece, Richard also tracks down three famous
United fans in former Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton, England cricket player Paul Nixon and former South Bank presenter Melvyn Bragg; although a rider is given that Melvyn was also a Gooner! The popular Keith Curle was the man in charge at the time and the Bristol-born Curle was assisted at the time by Colin West a former Sunderland striker who had been managed at Roker Park by a certain Len Ashurst. A few names to note in their ranks at the time were Tom Millar, a former Exile in our Spytty Park days of course, Jamie Devitt who was on loan in this very parish early last season, and in fact scored against his former club in our 2-3 defeat there in November 2020, and Reggie Lambe who played in a pre-season match at Undy for us under Anthony Hudson in the summer of 2011. So, as mentioned, the match ended in a 3-3 thriller. Shawn McCoulsky had given us an interval lead with a 43rd minute effort, but when 52 minutes had quickly ticked by our visitors were ahead thanks to Luke Joyce and Kelvin Etuhu. Matt Dolan scored the first of two stunning free kicks on 56 to make it 2-2 but, as per the norm, an ex-Exile netted against us when Tom Millar got his name on the scoresheet. However, up stepped Matty again on 69 minutes to leave Jack Bonham clutching thin air once again in the away goal to level the match again and end the scoring. A thoroughly enter tained 3,179 watched on with a hardy 160 loyal souls sitting in the away section.

View from the
boardroom A warm welcome to all the Directors, Players and Officials of Carlisle United for this evenings EFL League Two home fixture. As outlined in our recent communication the club board’s attention has been focused on the recruitment process for our new manager. It has been an interesting process and two things have struck me whilst undertaking the process. Firstly, the calibre of candidates has been really high, reflecting the position and profile of the club. Secondly, the market has moved significantly with more applications from progressive coaches as opposed to experienced managers. This seems to reflect the way football is moving when making such appointments. At the time of writing, we are in the final stages of the recruitment process and will communicate the outcome to fans as soon as a decision is made. On behalf of the Board, I wanted to thank Wayne, his back-room staff and all the players for their professionalism. It’s never easy when a manager departs. The way Wayne has led everyone supported by his team and the reaction from the players has been impressive. For that we are very appreciative. Last week I attended the first face-to-face EFL conference for over two years. The conference covered a multitude of topics from the EFL’s contribution to the fan led review, to hearing from the new CEO of the Professional Football Association
(Maheta Molango) on his vison. Rick Parry told the conference the EFL had relayed to the review team that there is a need for better distribution of wealth within the football pyramid to make clubs solvent, but in doing so it is recognised that there needs to be an increase in financial controls to make clubs sustainable. These two elements are intrinsically linked to ensure football clubs within the pyramid continue to operate and prosper for the benefit of the communities they serve. It will be interesting to see what the report relays when it is published in the next few weeks. Maheta’s presentation was really refreshing and most welcome. He highlighted throughout the need for better collaboration, and that is something all clubs would encourage. Whilst it is early days, the indications are positive. The relationship between the PFA and the EFL is of paramount importance. Lastly, this is Ben Lucey’s final home fixture as Club Secretary. Ben is not going too far as he is joining the Dragons. Whilst we are sad that Ben is departing, he goes with our best wishes, and we are pleased he is not going too far and will still be a familiar face around Rodney Parade. Thanks Ben and best of luck with the new role. Good luck to the lads this evening. Gavin

Rob Paterson Tribute Sad news to report that long-time County supporter Rob Paterson passed away on Sunday 10 October, aged 60, having become ill en route to the Bradford City game the previous day. Rob supported County home and away since the 1970s and often told the story of how he missed the 2-1 West Ham FA Cup win in January 1979 due to a knee operation. His hospitalisation brought its advantages however, as he ended up marrying the nurse who treated him, Jen Lowe, sister of Spytty the Dog’s alter-ego Martin. Rob went on to be a key player (his words!) of the ‘Never Say Dai’ fanzine football team in the early 1990s and a loyal follower of the reformed club. He combined his passion for County with a love of Rangers in his native Glasgow, attending their recent League Cup victory over Livingston. All at the club, including Rob’s many friends in the Bisley, send their sincere sympathy and condolences to Jen at this difficult time.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

The origins of Carlisle United can be traced to 1904, though football in the border city dates back to the 1870s, with Shaddongate United based at Milholme Bank and Red Rose playing at Brunton Park. The exact relationship of the present club to Shaddongate is a little blurry, though it appears that the latter rebranded themselves as Carlisle United in May 1904 following their expulsion from the Cumberland League after a series of postponed matches. A year later, the ‘new’ club joined the Lancashire Combination and eventually moved to Red Rose’s former Brunton Park in 1909, with the venue empty since Rose’s disbandment three years earlier.
HIGHLIGHTS
Blues’ main claim to fame remains topping the old First Division after three games of the 1974-75 campaign. Victories on the road at Chelsea and Middlesbrough were followed by a 1-0 success over Tottenham Hotspur to send a near packed Brunton Park into dreamland. Alan Ashman’s side, including the likes of Allan Ross, Bill Green, Ray Train and Bobby Parker, entered Cumbrian folk lore, but arguably none more so than dual sportsman Chris Balderstone who, just a couple of weeks after his penalty winner against Tottenham, swapped football kit for cricket flannels to help Leicestershire win the Sunday League! Sadly, the fairy-tale ended in relegation nine months later, but the memories remain undimmed.
W W W. N E W P O RT- CO U N T Y.CO. U K The legendary Bill Shankly will always be a ‘red’ following his Liverpool achievements of the 1960s and 1970s, though from 1949-51, his heart was very much ‘blue’, as he spent two seasons in charge at Brunton Park, leading the previously struggling United to 9th and 3rd placed finishes in Division 3 (North). One story tells of Shanks buying a brand new playing kit en route to Lincoln City from a Doncaster sports shop as he was embarrassed for his side to turn up at Sincil Bank in their existing tatty strip, while another tells of him motivating his players by reminding them that the opposition were already shattered following their marathon trek north! The iconic boss subsequently referred to Cumbrians’ promotion to Division 1 as ‘the greatest feat in the history of the game’. As the fledgling Newport AFC were getting to grips with life in the Hellenic League in 1989-90, United began their own fourth tier campaign with a new club record of 10 undefeated games. Cliff Middlemass’ side eventually lost at home to Scunthorpe United in October, eventually missing out on a play-off place on goal difference.
‘Finally to the supporters, I am proud to have taken the football club to the top of League Two, in December last year, from where we were when I walked in the building and to have given people something to be proud of, encouraged by, and passionate about, during the most challenging time society has seen during my lifetime, through the COVID-19 pandemic. Like you all, I was inspired by the football we played and what I believed we would go on to achieve.’
DON’T MENTION
FANS’ VIEWS
• T he 2003-04 season when Blues dropped out of the Football League for the first (and only) time since their 1928 election. Relegation had seemed inevitable after United lost 18 of their first 21 games, though newly-appointed player-manager Paul Simpson almost instigated a great escape with a late season surge of form that took them above York City but four points short of survival. Simpson led Carlisle to an immediate Football League return via the play-offs and secured a second successive promotion with the League Two title the following season. • C arlisle finished bottom of Division 4 in 1992, but were spared relegation as Aldershot had folded before the end of the season, leaving the Football League one club short. Four seasons earlier, Blues finished in 91st place in the fourth tier but, in the days of one-up and one-down with the Conference, escaped the drop by a mammoth 19 points ahead of … Newport County! • R ivalries, as Carlisle struggle to have any! Last season saw the return of the ‘Cumbrian Derby’ with Barrow, but with the clubs around an hour and a half drive and nearly 90 miles apart, there is no traditional animosity. Workington, just 30 miles away, is considerably closer, though the clubs have not met in the Football League since 1964 though Blues did defeat Reds 4-1 in a 1980 FA Cup tie. A 2019 survey, ‘The League of Love and Hate’ published by Chris Whiting, saw Carlisle fans list Middlesbrough, Preston North End, Sunderland and Newcastle United as their chief protagonists, though Blues don’t feature in the top four of supporters from those sides.
CUMBRIANS TODAY
Head coach departs The defeat at Bristol Rovers brought the end of Chris Beech’s Brunton Park reign. Assistant Gavin Skelton has been placed in caretaker charge, along with experienced youth coach Eric Kinder, with a club statement reading: ‘Carlisle United Football Club can confirm that head coach Chris Beech has left the club with immediate effect. Gavin Skelton and Eric Kinder will take temporary charge of first team affairs. The club would like to thank Chris for his efforts over the past two years.’ The former head coach released was clearly proud of his achievements in Cumbria, commenting in a statement: ‘To the players, past and present, who have worked under me at Carlisle, thank you for your contributions as individuals, committed to delivering the core values that we want representing the football club, as we chase that three-point feeling week after week and hopefully, in one way or another you will feel you have grown, improved and learned to be better on and off the pitch.
CARETAKER HEAD COACH’S VIEW
Carlisle caretaker head coach and former number two Gavin Skelton speaking ahead of Saturday’s trip to Tranmere Rovers. ‘It is a difficult time. It always is when someone loses their job and sometimes people just see the football side of it. What I can say is the gaffer is a really good man, really fair with me, really fair with the players. The board contacted me Wednesday afternoon to take training Thursday, Friday and the game Saturday and that is what our focus has been on. I have not got my CV in.’
‘Top bloke. As many others have said, he can’t take the whole blame, but should have done better regardless. All the best for future Chris.’ ’Crispo’ tweeting on the managerial change. ‘I wish Chris all the best, but it is very much the correct decision; it was good up until Christmas but since then it simply has not been good enough.’ Blues fan Tom Walton on Twitter. ‘Sad to see but I think the time was right, I hoped you could turn it around I really did. I wish you all the best for the future.’ A supportive message for the former head coach from Vicci Thornley. ‘Great guy, but ultimately did not work out and this is the best option for the club, all the best for the future Chris.’ A similar message from Matthew Gaskell. ‘In all seriousness, thanks for your service Chris, you’re a top, top bloke and I wish you all the best, had you had good backing … maybe you might still be in a job. Thanks for everything, best of luck ‘ Adam Stoddart with words of support.

MEET THE PLAYERS & STAFF OF
CARLISLE UNITED
by PHIL TANNER
01 Magnus Norman
GOALKEEPER
Joined ahead of last season as deputy to Paul Farman, now with Barrow, but had to wait until March to make his EFL debut. Londoner Magnus, 24, joined Fulham at the age of nine and turned pro in the winter of 2014 at 17. He was loaned to Farnborough, Hayes & Yeading and Southport before catching the eye of future Carlisle manager Chris Beech during a loan with Rochdale in 201819. Capped by England at U18 level.
02 Kelvin Mellor DEFENDER
Last crossed paths with us with Morecambe in last season’s playoff final. The right back linked up there with Derek Adams, who had managed him at Plymouth Argyle. Kelvin, 30, spent one season with the Shrimps after spending 2019-20 with Bradford City, before which he was with Blackpool. Prior to his two seasons at Argyle, he won promotion from League Two with Crewe in 2012 and helped them win the EFL Trophy.
04 Danny Devine MIDFIELDER
One of numerous summer 2020 signings as Chris Beech rebuilt his squad. Danny came through the ranks with Bradford City, who he supported as a child. He played more than 50 games for the Bantams after breaking into the first team at the start of 201617, shortly after signing his first professional contract at Valley Parade. Not to be confused with his namesake currently playing for Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
05 Rod McDonald DEFENDER
Played academy football with Stoke and Manchester City before dropping into non-league with clubs including Colwyn Bay, Nantwich Town, Hereford United and Telford. A successful trial with Chris Wilder saw Rod sign in 2015 for Northampton Town, where he helped win League Two. Next came Coventry City and he joined Carlisle from Wimbledon ahead of last season after spending two years with the Londoners.
03 Jack Armer
06 Jonathan Dinzeyi
Former Preston North End defender who joined the Blues in August last year on a one-year deal, since extended for a further two. Jack, qualifying via his mother, has represented Scotland from U17 to U19 levels and captained the U18s at Preston. Praised for a solid left foot, he has been used as a centreback and at left back. He had two fruitful loan spells from Preston to Lancaster City in the Northern Premier League.
On loan from Arsenal in a deal signed minutes before the August transfer window closed. Jonathan made a rare move between the two big North London clubs, spending his youth career with Tottenham before joining the Gunners ahead of last season and playing for both in the EFL Trophy. He made 30 appearances for Spurs’ U18 side and 22 for the U23s in Premier League 2, and won four caps for England at U18 squad.

Made 47 appearances in his Carlisle debut season, scoring two. Not to be confused with his namesake who played for Mansfield, now retired, Carlisle’s Joe is a versatile left-sided player who was with Manchester United as a youngster and made the Europa League squad under Louis van Gaal. A loan spell with Sheffield United in 2017 was blighted by injury and he then spent two years with Bradford City from summer 2018.
Summer signing on a twoyear deal. Zach, 26, came through the youth system with Bolton Wanderers, where he scored 29 in 68 appearances during his first spell. Nottingham Forest signed him for a reported £3m fee in the January 2017 transfer window. He had loan spells back at Bolton and Rochdale while with Forest and he joined Wigan Athletic on a short-term deal at the end of the January 2021 window.
DEFENDER
08 Callum Guy MIDFIELDER
Club captain, succeeding Nick Anderton who is now with Bristol Rovers. Callum, 24, was signed during the Januar y 2020 transfer window from Blackpool. A box-to-box midfielder, he started his career with Derby County where he quickly became a regular in the U23 side. He had loan spells with Port Vale and Bradford City then spent the first half of 2018-19 on loan at Blackpool before the move became permanent.
09 Lewis Alessandra STRIKER
Made 50 appearances last season, scoring nine. Lewis, 32, joined United on a short-term deal during the January 2020 window, since extended. The versatile front man arrived from local rivals Morecambe where he bagged five in 26 games in the first half of 2019-20. He started with Oldham and moved on to a first spell at Morecambe followed by time with Plymouth, Rochdale, York (loan), Hartlepool and Notts County.

13 Lukas Jensen
17 Corey Whelan
On loan from Burnley. The Dane - no relation to former Clarets keeper Brian Jensen - is in his third season there after starting with hometown club Helsingor. He became a regular in the U23 side, building a reputation for saving penalties, and after progressing to the first-team bench he ended last season on loan to Bolton Wanderers as understudy to Matt Gilks. Lukas then had a two-month loan in Iceland with Kordrengir.
With Liverpool from the age of nine, progressing to become a regular in the U23 side where he often wore the captain’s armband. The Republic of Ireland U17 and U21 cap had loan spells with Yeovil and Crewe, then spent 18 months in the US second tier with Phoenix Rising. On return from America he signed for Wigan, who he helped avoid the drop last season despite them going into administration.

14 Tristan Abrahams
DEFENDER
18 Josh Dixon MIDFIELDER
STRIKER
A g re a t exa m p l e of perseverance in overcoming injur y. Josh joined the academy aged nine and earned his first one-year deal at the end of 2019. An attackminded midfielder with an eye for a pass, he overcame a cruciate injury to force his way into the reckoning, only to suffer a similar injury ahead of last season. He stuck with it, finally made his debut in November and was further rewarded with a two-year deal this summer.
15 Taylor Charters
19 Manasse Mampala
Joined United from County in June 2021 after scoring 18 in 74 appearances in all competitions for us. Tristan began with Leyton Orient and switched to Norwich City for an undisclosed fee in 2017. Loans back at Orient and with Exeter and Yeovil followed and he left Carrow Road for County in the summer of 2019. He spent the second half of last season back where it all began with another 14 games on loan with Orient.
MIDFIELDER
Cumbrian from Whitehaven who earned a two-year deal early in the second year of his scholarship with the club in August 2019. Having trained with the first-team squad and with a number of pre-season friendlies to his name, he settled quickly and notched up nine appearances in 2019-20 mostly as a substitute, plus two games on loan at Workington, and last term broke into the side after the turn of the year.
16 Morgan Feeney DEFENDER
Signed in January, initially until the end of last season. Bootleborn Morgan, 22, came through Everton’s youth system and was loaned to Tranmere for the second half of 2019-20, only to suffer a hamstring injury in his first appearance. He left Goodison for Sunderland that summer and was snapped up as a free agent after being trailed by Chris Beech for some time. England schools and youth cap up to U19.

30 Brad Young
MIDFIELDER
STRIKER
One of only two academy graduates to be rewarded with a full contract at the end of last season, along with Lewis Bell, with six others released. Keelan, who captained the Blues’ U18 side, was handed an initial six-month pro deal. After recovering from a pre-season injury the dead-ball specialist went out on loan in early September to Workington in the lower tier of the Northern Premier League.
On loan for the season from Aston Villa. Brad signed professional terms with Villa in July 2019 when he was still 16. He was immediately promoted to the U18 squad and scored seven goals in his first nine appearances. He featured in the EFL Trophy in November 2020 and then played the last 30 minutes in the 4-1 FA Cup defeat by Liverpool in January, when the main squad was in isolation and Villa fielded 16 debutants.
Gavin Skelton:
Acting Head Coach It illustrates the harsh world of management in League Two that the first version of this page featured Chris Beech as Head Coach and there may be another incumbent by the time you read this. The former Rochdale stalwart was in charge at Brunton Park for just short of two years and oversaw a big overhaul of playing staff, but the promise in a great first half of last season wasn’t sustained. Last season United placed tenth, seven points outside the playoff places, and the writing was on the wall early this month when they slipped to 22nd place after losing 3-0 at fellow strugglers Bristol Rovers. Gavin was Beech’s number two, having stepped up to the role from youth coach in June 2019 when Steven Pressley was manager. The brother of TV presenter Helen, he played against County in the Conference when he was with fellow Cumbrians Barrow. He was with Carlisle’s centre of excellence from the age of eight. Now 40, he brings a wealth of playing, coaching and managerial experience on both sides of the border to the role, having played more than 200 games for Gretna during their rise through the ranks in Scotland and then managed Workington and Queen of the South. Gavin is assisted in caretaker charge by youth coach Eric Kinder.
