It was a great feeling being back on the home touchline for the first time in a few months on Tuesday evening. I was delighted with the way that we played against Plymouth, particularly with the younger players who all showed a good attitude. The senior players did the same, so it was nice to score a couple of goals and keep a clean sheet too. There were plenty of impressive performances from those who were in the starting line up and came off the bench too. I thought Aneurin Livermore in particular was absolutely superb and picked up where he left off after his performance against Ipswich in the Carabao Cup. He is knocking on the door now and it gives me a welcome selection headache if young players are doing it consistently. The summer transfer window has been a busy period with the number go incomings and outgoings, but I’m happy with the squad that we’ve got and the players we’ve added. We were able to bring in Jake Cain and Ollie Cooper on deadline day, so it was good to get some minutes in their legs in midweek. Leyton Orient have began the season well under Kenny and I’m sure they will be challenging at the top end of the season with the quality of some of the players they’ve added to their squad over the summer. They had a good result over Bradford on Saturday and they’ll provide us with a stern test this afternoon. Make plenty of noise and enjoy the match. Michael

Starting his career with Leyton Orient, Tristan Abrahams was signed by Championship club Norwich City after breaking into the O’s first team at the age of 17. Following his release from the Norfolk side in 2019, Abrahams penned a deal with the Exiles where he netted 18 goals in 74 appearances in two seasons. The forward later returned to where it all started halfway through the 2020/21 season when he joined the O’s on loan but failed to find the net in 14 appearances. The 22-year-old now resides in Cumbria where he plays up top for Carlisle United.

Jamie Turley

After making only seven appearances due to a lengthy injury, Jamie Turley left the Exiles after the 2016/17 season and had spells with Boreham Wood and Notts County before spending three seasons with Leyton Orient. The centre-back netted his only County goal against the O’s at Brisbane Road in a 1-0 away win for Warren Feeney’s men in August 2016. Turley was a part of the Orient side who gained promotion back to the EFL under the management of the late Justin Edinburgh. He made 14 appearances under Edinburgh and a further 33 in all competitions in the following two seasons.

Lamar Reynolds

Lamar Reynolds worked his way up through the leagues and soon joined the V9 academy, a programme set up by Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy to showcase players from non-league to scouts. After impressing during his time there, Reynolds joined the Exiles in August 2017 and made 10 appearances before joining Leyton Orient on loan in January 2018 in the National League. The forward continued his career in the National League when he left the Exiles for Dagenham & Redbridge in 2018 before dropping a level into the National League South where he now plays for Concord Rangers.

Dale Gorman

Starting his career in the Republic of Ireland with Letterkenny Rovers, Dale Gorman moved to England to begin his EFL journey with Stevenage. After spending three seasons with the Hertfordshire side, Gorman joined Justin Edinburgh’s Leyton Orient ahead of their 2018/19 National League title winning campaign. The Irishman made 17 appearances the following season before joining the Exiles on loan in 2020 and netted one goal during his time at Rodney Parade - a 69th minute winner against Morecambe in March 2020. Gorman joined Northern Irish side Glentoran in September 2020 and made 26 appearances before returning to the National League to join Yeovil Town in July 2021 for an undisclosed fee.

View from the

boardroom A warm welcome to all the directors, players and officials of Leyton Orient for today’s fixture. After a difficult month of travel on the road it is nice to be back at Rodney Parade for our first home league game of the season. It was terrific to see fans back in their numbers at the Southampton game and, as expected, it created a great atmosphere. In addition, we saw great support for our mid-week game in the Papa John’s Trophy against Plymouth and those who were here were treated to a great display by our younger players. It is great to see the younger lads being given an opportunity and they certainly lived up to the challenge. The Plymouth game also saw the return of our manager Michael Flynn. It was good to see him back. Our thanks also to Wayne Hatswell and the rest of the coaching staff for stepping up in the manager’s absence. It is much appreciated. Today’s game is always a poignant fixture given the connection between the two clubs formed by Justin Edinburgh. His sudden passing touched the hearts of

both sets of supporters and indeed the footballing world. We will remember Justin today by asking both sets of supporters to clap in the 49th minute. As always, our thoughts go to the Edinburgh family. Following the theme of poignancy, it was fitting to see the tributes to all those that had passed away during the pandemic being remembered at the Southampton game. Thanks to the media team for pulling it all together and to those supporters who were able to share their sad loss with the club. A warm welcome to Jake Cain from Liverpool and Ollie Cooper from Swansea City who joined the club on the last day of the transfer window. It’s been a busy time for recruitment throughout the summer given the number of arrivals and it is always a bit of relief when the window shuts as, by default, it creates a level of stability. Thanks as always for everyone’s continued support and let’s get behind the boys. Good luck to the lads today. Gavin

AMBER FROM THE ATTIC with Chris Shingler

It was in fact St David’s Day when the O’s travelled west along the M4 to play out a fixture against an ailing Newport County (Mk1), but the old Ironsides still had enough in the tank to take a gutsy point in a scoreless draw. The ‘Amberscene’ issue which we will be perusing had a cover price of 50p and shows defender and parttime striker Paul Williams nodding home during a recent home defeat to Hartlepool; sadly, we learn his effort was disallowed as we delve into this 16-page issue. The Leslie “Dirty Den” Granthamlookalike manager, Brian Eastick, opens the production on page three by stating that its “Never over ‘til it’s over;” but, even by Hollywood standards, Eastick and the club were looking at finding a loavesand-fishes miracle from somewhere, and sadly, in The Barclays League Division Four of 1988 such happenings were in rather short supply. Mr. Eastick, who went on to coach in various England age group set-ups also noted that the 4-2 Hartlepool defeat wasn’t just down to bad luck, like some supporters had told him, but also down to “Bad play.” Brian puts two of Pool’s goals down to Paul Williams’ errors, but

as he points out on the credit side, the Northern Irishman also scored with two “Excellent” headed efforts. Going back to that cover picture, Brian notes … “I saw nothing wrong with his disallowed goal” … but adds … “This illustrates the Jekyll and Hyde nature of his performance.” In Ray Taylor ’s ‘ I n s i d e S o m e r to n’ feature, it’s noted that Paul is now our top scorer on a heady three goals, and Ray also mentions that even the Hartlepool defenders … “Would not have had any complaints if the goal had been allowed.” Alas, it wasn’t, no hat-trick was to be had, and the defeat became just another nail in the coffin with relegation to the GM Vauxhall Conference heading towards

8 | O F F I C I A L M ATC H DAY P R O G R A M M E

Gwent at an alarming rate. Ray also recalls that the last time we had met Orient was in the Freight Rover Trophy where our winning spot-kick at Leyton Stadium in the semi-final shootout was in fact booted home by our popular ‘keeper, the late, great Mark Kendall. Hot on its heels is ‘Commercial Scene’ where we learn that a V. Morgan of Newport was a grand better off, being the lucky winner of a recent lottery draw that was then managed by Mrs. Ann Pring, and that the evening’s match ball sponsor was Mr. Fred Wangler, the well-known Chepstow Road optician and supporter. As we turn the page, we discover all things Orient and many names stand the test of time (or my memory anyway!) here. Included in their squad were former Southampton goalkeeper Peter Wells, ex-Chelsea defender John Sitton, club captain was Kevin Hales - another former resident of Stamford Bridge while other well-known players to lower-league fans were Steve Ketteridge, Kevin Godfrey, Ian Juryeff and Kevin Nugent. A quick glance back to their previous Somerton Park visit was had, this saw a home win by two goals to nil; both goals (including one penalty) were scored by Linden Jones, past Gwent resident, the Newport-born Rhys Wilmott who was then on loan at the O’s from Arsenal. The East London side were in an impressive third spot at kick-off with 54 points from 33 matches, with terminal County needing several snookers, rooted bottom in 24th spot with a paltry 20 points from 32 fixtures. Another startling stat bears down on me here, namely that Orient had knocked home 67 goals thus far compared to our woeful 28. We enter the second half of the issue with ‘4 Sight’ where Wallace Brown gives the eager fan a round-

up of recent events in the bottom tier. I’m afraid it’s not great news there either, as Wallace reports that Rochdale’s 3-1 home win over Hereford had pulled them further away from us; the gap at the time was 11 points, and, as if to dampen the prospects even further, we find that our Leyton visitors’ last-butone outing was a thumping 4-1 home win over our near neighbours Cardiff City. In ‘Supporter Club News’ a fair chunk is given over to a letter written by former director George Thorneycroft, whose explanation as to why he wasn’t going to rejoin the clubs board went public via naughty South Wales Argus reporter Ian Kelly, after George had told him and South Wales Echo reporter Rob Phillips (now of Radio Wales) in confidence and requested his reasons not be recorded. Mr. Thorneycroft does note that Rob did indeed respect his wishes and didn’t report his reasons in his publication. Well batted, Rob! George goes onto say he was always available to offer any help or advice he could give to the club. In Amanda Bolt’s ‘Amber Angle’ she looks at the gaffer Brian Eastick, who later that March was relieved of his duties. She pulls no punches in writing … “When Mr. Eastick was finally named County manager; most supporters were heard to comment … Who is Brian Eastick?” Even more so, when the likes of Lew Chatterley and Lawrie McMenemy had been names touted around in the press beforehand. However, Brian tells Amanda of his career to date where the former goalie had coached under Dave Sexton at QPR, then spells had followed at Chelsea, Brighton, as well as a stint in Kuwait, before returning home to London where he ended up at The Valley with Charlton, working under Lenny Lawrence; no stranger himself to Rodney Parade & Newport County of course! In ‘Look Back in Amber,’ a much happier time is covered with our

thumping 5-1 victory at Brisbane Road in October 1982, where a Tommy Tynan double, plus goals from Steve Lowndes, John Aldridge and Karl Elsey gave us a fine day out in the capital. I was one of the 2,040 present that day too. For the record, the O’s consolation was netted by Barry Silkman, who later became a well-known football agent. So, as previously mentioned, we ground out a decent point against an Orient side in front of 1,656 diehards. The O’s then crashed and burned a tad towards the end of the season, ending up in disappointing 8th position. Mind you, even 18th was a pipedream for a beleaguered County whose weary, soon-to-becorpse dropped out of the league come May. Teams: County: David Coles, Simeon Hodson, Steve Sherlock, Darren Carr, Paul Williams, Lawrence Osbourne, Richard Jones, Roger Gibbins, Gary Brook, Adrian Mann, Paul Bodin. Subs: Andy Thackeray, Glynne Millett. Orient (printed XI): Peter Wells, Terry Howard, Kevin Dickenson, John Sitton, Keith Day, Kevin Hales, Steve Ketteridge, Steve Castle, Alan Hull, Ian Juryeff, Alan Comfort. Subs: Mike Conroy and Kevin Godfrey.

Second-half goals from Dom Telford and Timmy Abraham saw Newport County AFC get their Papa John’s Trophy campaign under way with a 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle. Telford, who enjoyed an 18-month stint with the Pilgrims before joining the Exiles in January, picked his spot from 25 yards and curled a stunning left-footed effort into the top corner just before the hour-mark. Abraham - another player who spent time at Home Park - then chalked up his second goal of the campaign late on by curling home an effort into the opposite corner to seal the victory for the Exiles. Michael Flynn, returning to the touchline for the first time following a period of isolation, rung the changes from the Exiles' defeat against Salford City. County’s deadline day additions Jack Cain and Ollie Cooper, who joined on loan from Liverpool and Swansea City respectively, were handed their first starts. Matty Dolan returned to the starting line up to captain the Exiles, while academy scholars Harrison Bright and Aneurin Livermore both started. A well-worked move from the Exiles, which started with Cooper on the halfway line, presented them with their first opportunity of note. The Swans loanee, Telford and Abraham all combined before the latter’s cross was cleared to Willmott, whose powerful strike flew over the crossbar. Willmott then turned provider to set up another chance for the hosts after his cross into the penalty area was flicked back across goal by Joe Woodiwiss. It forced a save out of Callum Burton, who could only parry the ball into the centre of the box, but Abraham’s shot was deflected past the post. Abraham forced the Burton into action again two minutes as he skipped past two defenders and opened up a sight at goal, with the Pilgrims goalkeeper getting down low with a strong hand before he pushed the follow-up past the post. It took 30 minutes for the visitors to cause any real problems of note to County’s goal when they broke away down the left and Law’s low effort was pushed past the post by Nick Townsend. Te l fo rd , w h o w a s p re v i o u s l y d u b b e d “Mr. Checkatrade” for his goals in this competition with Bury three seasons ago, looked lively against his former club and enjoyed a pair of chances just before the half-time interval. First, he forced Burton into making a smart save and then saw a powerful strike pushed out for a corner. The Exiles finished the half on top although they were close to going behind five minutes after the restart when Law nodded James Wilson's cross the wrong side of the post by Law. And Wilson was left to rue the missed chance as County made the breakthrough just before the hourmark. After linking up with Bright and Cooper, Telford gathered the ball on the edge of the area, found a pocket of space and curled the ball into the top corner beyond the reach of Burton. Iestyn Evans was introduced at the half-time interval for his first senior appearance for the Exiles and almost made a dream start 16 minutes later. The defender’s effort from 35 yards had Burton backpedaling, but the goalkeeper managed to tip the shot over the crossbar. Massey then met Garrick’s cross and almost brought the away side level, but County responded and ensured the points were secured through Abraham's curling effort six minutes before the end. Newport County AFC: Nick Townsend, Aaron Lewis, Joe Woodiwiss, Matty Dolan (C) (Iestyn Evans 45’), Harrison Bright, Aneurin Livermore, Jack Cain (Ryan Hillier 61’), Robbie Willmott (Zach Maher 45’), Ollie Cooper, Timmy Abraham, Dom Telford. Substitutes not used: Evan Ovendale, Charlie Bullock, Tom Stokes, Jonah Williams.

LEYTON ORIENT

by Richard Taylor WELCOME …

We welcome LEYTON ORIENT to Rodney Parade for our longawaited first home League Two fixture of the season. We have to go back to February 1983 for a County victory over the travelling ‘O’s’ when a Steve Lowndes hat-trick and a John Aldridge goal sent Frank Clark’s side back to Brisbane Road on the wrong end of a 4-1 score line. Not even a switch to the Cardiff City Stadium could end our barren run six months ago, as former County loanee Conor Wilkinson secured a win for the visitors.

ourselves down at the last hurdle.’ O’s returned to the Football League in 2019 as National League champions after two seasons away. It was the second fifth tier promotion in six years for the late, great Justin Edinburgh, who is remembered with such affection by supporters in Newport and Leyton.

O’S TODAY

Into the Play-offs Leyton Orient rose to sixth place in the fledgling League Two table last weekend, with a 2-0 home victory over previously unbeaten Bradford City. Twin strikers Ruel Sotiriou and Harry Smith were on target in the second half as our visitors bounced back in style from the disappointing defeat to Harrogate Town at Brisbane Road four days earlier. The winning margin could have been bigger but for City keeper Richard O’Donnell, and the 752 Bradford fans returned home disappointed, with local newspaper ‘The Telegraph & Argus’ referring to a ‘wretched display’.

MANAGER’S VIEW IN THE BEGINNING …

O’s from the East Though some football historians date our visitors’ formation to 1888, the generally accepted theory is that Leyton Orient was founded originally by members of Homerton Theological College in 1881 as the ‘footballing wing’ of Glyn Cricket Club. They adopted the title Orient FC seven years later, apparently at the suggestion of committee member Jack Deering, who was an employee of the Orient Steam Navigation Company (subsequently the P & O Group). The name had the added link with the club’s location in the east of London and, to consolidate the connection, our visitors’ initial kit designs featured a white ‘O’ on the back of the shirt.

HIGHLIGHTS

O’s had a one-season stint in England’s top division in 1962-63 when, despite finishing bottom and 12 points from safety, Johnny Carey’s side defeated champions Everton, northern giants Liverpool and Manchester United, as well as east London neighbours West Ham United. This afternoon’s visitors reached the Semi Final of the FA Cup in 1978 before losing to a Malcolm MacDonald inspired Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. Club stalwart Bobby Fisher, now 65, played right back that afterrnoon in the capital and recalled recently: ’We simply froze. Psychologically, against Middlesbrough in the Quarter Finals we had peaked. I remember getting off the team bus thinking we were going to struggle. We were drained physically and mentally. It was the biggest game of our careers and we let

O’s manager Kenny Jackett was pleased with his side’s return to form against Bradford City seven days ago, with the 31-times capped Wales international reflecting: ‘We did not want to lose two at home in a week, it was disappointing against Harrogate, but fair play to them. We had to respond and adapt to the division. Bradford coming down, it was a big atmosphere, thanks go out to the supporters as they really got behind the players and drove us on. It was a good link. I thought in the first-half we were on top and doing well to get up to the final third, but could not find those moments. We have got strikers out in Aaron Drinan and Paul Smyth who will make a difference. Second-half we found the moments and scored two very good goals.’

FANS’ VIEWS

‘The big talking point among the fans is our summer clear-out, restructure and new manager in Kenny Jackett. We now have an experienced boss and hungry players. We will finish top three insists my heart. Head says fourth and win the play-offs.’ Mat Roper in confident mood talking to ‘FourFourTwo’ magazine.

‘I am optimistic we will do well this season with a guy like KJ in charge. There are things which we can all see need to be done around strengthening the squad with a couple of new players and sometimes games will not always go as we hope or expect, but overall we are in safe hands with this bloke leading the way.’ ‘redintheface’, on the same site, is happy with manager Kenny Jackett ‘I have lived just outside Newport since 1988, just as they were ceasing to exist. Their story has been a remarkable one, and I was as delighted as full-blooded County supporters when they returned to the Football League. By the way, Tommy Johnston played for them.’ ‘cymruO’ with the charitable comments on ‘The Independent Leyton Orient Forum’. Tommy scored a remarkable 46 goals in 63 games for County between 1954 and 1956 before going on to become O’s record scorer in his two spells at Brisbane Road.

• A ston Villa. George Petchey’s O’s needed a victory against the Birmingham side in the final game of the 1973-74 season to secure promotion to Division 1. However, the majority of a Brisbane Road crowd of 29,766 were left distraught as Ray Graydon’s penalty earned Villa a 1-1 draw.

ourselves down at the last hurdle.’ O’s returned to the Football League in 2019 as National League champions after two seasons away.

MEET THE MANAGER

Kenny Jackett; Manager

One of the most experienced managers in the EFL, Kenny put pen to paper on a one-year rolling contract at Brisbane Road in May 2021. A promotion winner with three clubs, his managerial career began in 1996 at Watford. He made more than 330 appearances as a defender for the Hornets before moving into coaching after retiring through injury at the age of 28, having also won 32 Welsh caps between 1982 and 1988. Promotions followed at his next three clubs as he took Swansea City up from League Two in 2004-05, Millwall into the Championship via the playoffs in 2009-10 and Wolves to a League One title in 2013-14. The Molineux club set a divisional record of 103 points as they returned to the Championship at the first attempt and Kenny picked up the divisional Manager of the Year award in the process. A very short spell at Rotherham United, lasting only five games, was followed by four years at Portsmouth. There Kenny picked up the Football League Trophy for the second time in his career, having also won it with Swansea. He departed Pompey in March despite a win rate of over 50 per cent and was soon back in management, describing Orient as a club perfectly matching his own ambitions.

Giving Football Back to Small Business At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.
