WELCOME EDITOR’S NOTE

2018 EDITION

H

aving grown up in Lincoln City, it is my pleasure to share many of the wonderful things that are familiar to me here, and to also tell you about some new experiences that I explored for the first time. It’s been really fun to write about a place that will always feel like home; a place that is great to visit for the first time, or over-and-over again. The purpose of this guide is to give you a few suggestions to help plan the perfect beach vacation, no matter what your interests are, or how long you choose to stay. The beach is always an excellent place to spend your time. Look for glass floats placed on the beach daily from mid-October through Memorial Day by Finders Keepers, and beachcomb for other treasures that wash up after high tide. Fly a kite yourself, or watch skilled flyers during the fall and summer Kite Festival. Hike beyond the beach to Drift Creek Falls, or climb up above it when you trek through Cascade Head. Lincoln City is also full of plenty of awesome indoor activities. Blow your own float or glass art, check out fossils, minerals and meteorites, or play vintage video games. Choose from a variety of lodging options, and enjoy the finest meals and drinks that local restaurants have to offer. Make amazing memories, try new things, and start your own traditions or annual gatherings. Regardless of what you plan to do in Lincoln City, I’m sure that you’ll have a fantastic time!

ADVOCATING

SPACES FOR CULTURE TO THRIVE ON THE COAST MEET NIKI PRICE 14

iki Price understands how important access to cultural opportunities are to small communities, as she’ll enthusiastically explain if you ask her about it. As executive director of the nonprofit Lincoln City Cultural Center, she oversees all of the events and programs that take place in the historic Delake School building. Price’s advocacy for the arts extends far beyond her occupation though, as is apparent in her background and philosophy of life; she “believes that art is a crucial component of any successful society, and that creative expression is a goal unto itself.” Price developed an early appreciation for writing and the arts in high school, and further cultivated her journalistic and theatre arts skills in college. While studying at the University of Arizona, Price served as an intern journalist in Washington D.C., worked on a theatre crew in Italy and England, studied in Hungary and the Czech Republic, and was arts editor for her college newspaper, the Arizona Daily Wildcat. After completing a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in English Literature, Theatre and Humanities in 1993, Price interned with the Baltimore Center Stage theater in Maryland and taught conversational English in Hungary before working for a variety of newspapers and even starting her own.

W

hen Price first arrived in Lincoln City in 1996, she contributed articles and edited sections of the News-Guard for the next few years. Price realized that if she continued working for community newspapers, she would only advance in the industry by moving from small town to small town, so she and her husband chose to start their own paper so that they could stay in the coastal town that they loved and raise a family. The Prices created Oregon Coast Today in their very own living room in 2005 to promote coastal communities from Manzanita all the way south to Yachats. Oregon Coast Today not only connected locals and visitors to cultural events and activities, but it also provided an opportunity for Price to advance the arts, outdoors, environment, and literary events in a light and positive format. When the executive director position at the Lincoln City Cultural Center opened in 2012, she knew that it would be the perfect transition to take her interests and skills to the next level. The Prices were able to sell Oregon Coast Today, and the paper remains mostly the same and is still successful today.

16

As executive director of the Cultural Center, Price applies her passion for the humanities, love of the arts, and more than two decades of newspaper experience to campaign for, support, and produce exceptional community-centered events and programs. Her responsibilities also include maintenance and physical improvements to the Delake School building and working with the property’s owner, the City of Lincoln City. In addition to supervising a staff of five, and managing over 100 active volunteers, Price is constantly developing innovative new ways to engage both visitors and locals alike. Price has some amazing plans for renovations and additional offerings

in the works, and is actively working with the city and a variety of organizations to make two important projects a reality in the near future. The first task consists of redesigning the twoand-a-half acre outside area from a school-yard design to a functional cultural plaza, complete with lighting, sculpture, outdoor ceramics studio and performance space, a defined parking lot, with access and electricity for the Lincoln City Farmers and Crafters Market. The second improvement is a two-year training and mentorship program that will enable the Cultural Center to design larger visual arts presentations and new performance arts, and will “change a small-town mindset from just good enough to great.

newportnewstimes.com

D

uring her tenure, Price has seen the Lincoln City Cultural Center establish an operations reserve fund, double the number of events offered and triple the number of annual patron visits. She takes very little credit for these achievements though, and explains that the real driving force behind the improvements come from volunteers and the Center’s board of directors. Price also promotes the arts above and beyond her position with the Cultural Center. She is the chair of the Lincoln City Public Art Committee, which has a budget in place and is almost finished with an amazing public arts master plan. And as vice chair of the Oregon Cultural Trust, Price is working to establish Lincoln City’s reputation statewide as an arts loving community. Stop in and visit the Lincoln City Cultural Center or check out their website at lincolncity-culturalcenter.org where you’re sure to find something that you’ll enjoy. They provide a variety of gallery exhibits, performing arts events, gift shop treasures, and studio times for dance, ceramics, textiles, and yoga. Once you see what the Cultural Center has to offer, you’ll realize why Price is so passionate about promoting a place for culture to thrive on the coast.

If you spend any amount of time in Lincoln City, you’ll quickly understand that surfing is a big deal here.

lthough surfers have been catching waves on the Central Oregon Coast since the 1950s, surfing really began to flourish on local beaches in the 1980s and is now firmly rooted in the culture and lifestyle of the area. Recently, more and more people are moving to Lincoln City from near and far so that their lives can revolve around surfing; they are also embracing the laid-back and relaxing way of life that this coastal community provides. That’s what brought Bryan Nichols here four years ago. He’ll tell you that the easygoing yet creative atmosphere of this place is only getting better, and that there is nowhere else he’d rather live, work and play. Nichols inadvertently discovered Lincoln City on his way to Portland from Sacramento and realized that it was an amazing find, and that it would be the ideal place for him to relocate. He explains that it was like, “a dream come true to live in a place with an ocean view, where everyone is so friendly, and there are so many cool things to do.” Nichols had recently closed his music store in Sacramento because the building he rented was being demolished, and although he was regularly playing in a band called ZuhG and booking other bands in four permanent venues there full time, the Oregon Coast was an easy fit. When he moved to Lincoln City, Nichols was able to keep his job by booking bands remotely, and he not only kept his band in California (he travels there more than half a dozen times a year), but started up a new one here on the coast, also called ZuhG. CONTINUES ON PAGE 28

26

27

CONTINUES FROM PAGE 27

N

ichols began playing in local bars and restaurants with his new band and as a solo act, and with his network of touring bands and music venues, he started booking live music from Sacramento to Lincoln City and beyond. Shortly after moving to the coast, Nichols also learned to surf and took to it right away; in fact he started planning his schedule around the tides so that he could catch the best waves. After Nichols had spent nearly two years carving out a niche for himself on the coast, a new opportunity opened up with the closure of the Oregon Surf Shop. He was able to fill the void created by the closure of the long-time local surf shop and open his own shop in the Nelscott District of Lincoln City, named (you guessed it) the ZuhG Life Surf Shop.

When asked about the meaning of ZuhG Life, Nichols will tell you that he created the word (complete with capital G at the end) because it expresses a uniqueness that is unlike anything else. He says that at first, the name was an answer of sorts to the question of what kind of music his band played. “Ask any member of the Band ZuhG this question, and you will get a different response every time. Musically ZuhG resists being easily defined: mixing funk, reggae, jazz, jam, and rock n’ roll together to create its own expressive genre of music. ZuhG’s sound will push your perceptions of music to new heights.”

The name seems fitting for his diverse and eclectic surf shop as well, but is it a bit confusing? Nichols laughs about that and says the name is his brand, and that it encompasses all of his creative projects and endeavors.

W

hen you visit the ZuhG Life Surf Shop, you’ll see that it certainly lives up to its name by offering a variety of hip and interesting items beyond the comprehensive inventory of surfboards, wetsuits, and many other surfing accessories for sale. The shop

carries a large selection of t-shirts, sweatshirts, pants, hats, coats, hoodies, and other kinds of clothing from name brand companies, and even has a special press that will transfer designs and images onto clothing. They have a variety of images to choose from, or you can create your own custom one-off pattern. Nichols also creates original artwork and collaborates with other artists to design images for his own brand of clothing called Long Lefts, and has many of these products available for purchase as well. Additionally, he uses his press to make custom apparel and products like t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, beverage kuzees, and stickers for local businesses. The shop also sells local artwork and music, and offers surfboard, stand up paddle board, body board, skim board, and kayak rentals and lessons, and even offers beginning and intermediate guitar lessons.

B

ecause many visitors come to the coast to browse, shop and surf, and many dedicated locals support his business, the Zuhg Life Surf Shop is thriving. You’re sure to find something original there or even create your own image or design, but don’t be surprised if Nichols isn’t running the shop and someone else is; that just means the surfing is good and he is out riding the waves, playing music locally or touring with his one of his bands. Check out his all-encompassing website at zuhglifesurfshop.com for shop hours, merchandise, ZuhG (the band) CDs, touring dates, and where to catch one of Nichols’ local live shows.

When you meet Ben Soeby, one of the first things you’ll notice is that he’s always busy doing something constructive.

Whether he’s drawing or painting on scraps of wood, carving a fresh sculpture, or casting salmon bait into the river, Soeby’s complex methods are scattered yet meticulous, and fascinating to watch. His artwork is uniquely Oregon, and clearly influenced by fishing the coastal rivers and creeks around Lincoln City. Soeby will tell you that these interwoven

passions flow together naturally for him; that they are the direct result of hard work, good fun and “following his dream.” Having grown up in Lincoln City in the 70s and 80s, and returning to the coast after earning a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from Oregon State University, Soeby is not just an integral part of the town; he’s a local fixture.

If you’ve spent any amount of time here, you’ve probably seen, and maybe even chatted with him. You might have spotted him at Pacific Grind Café drawing the greeting cards he sells, at one of the area restaurants gathering organic vegetable morsels for the pigs he raises, or at the edge of the water fishing, clamming or crabbing.

Soeby’s expression of life through art goes all the way back to his childhood and teen years; his father is a coastal potter and his mother sold and promoted local art in her gift shop and beyond. In high school, Soeby’s art compositions were focused on his love of skateboarding as he began developing the unique style still evident in his work today. After mastering a variety of mediums and further honing his artistic technique in college, Soeby discovered fishing as a way to cope with a painful breakup and to be “lost in the moment.” Beginning in the mid-90s, Soeby went to work seasonally for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, where he spent twelve years studying all of the stages of life for CONTINUES ON PAGE 38

salmon and steelhead in coastal rivers along the Pacific Ocean. In addition to advocating a better environment for Oregon’s fisheries, Soeby began to integrate the lives of fish into his artwork, and they became a major inspiration for his artistic vision into the future. As he continued to polish his signature craft, Soeby added seabirds, shellfish and the rugged landscapes around Lincoln City to his drawings, paintings and sculpture.

M

ore recently, Soeby has incorporated the rugged history of the area into his work, with an emphasis on logging and the kind of Oregon lore that Ken Keasy’s influential novel Sometimes a Great Notion celebrates. Soeby’s philosophy depicts the beauty and struggle inherent in nature through the pieces he creates. When asked about the connection that his art makes to the greater world around us and the unrelenting pace at which he produces new work, he explains, “art celebrates life; it’s another chance to live, and because time is too short to waste, you never know how many more tides you may have left.”

decade, it’s been steadily gathering recognition and acclaim more recently throughout Oregon and beyond. You can view his work currently on display in Lincoln City at Black Squid Beer House, Zuhg Life Surf Shop, Red Cock Gifts, Scout Northwest Trading Company, and the gift shop at the Lincoln City Cultural Center, and catch regularly reoccurring exhibits at Blackfish Café, and in the main gallery of the Lincoln City Cultural Center. Soeby also shows his work further south on the coast at Cafe C’est La Vie in Lincoln Beach, Restaurant Beck in Little Whale Cove, and at

Sorella in Newport, and he has a booth twice a year at Crafty Wonderland in Portland. You might also run into Soeby fishing the banks of Salmon and Siletz Rivers, or crabbing or clamming around the Siletz Bay. His advice for successful fishing is to, “get up early, get out in the cold, get your bait into the water – fishing will always lead you to something else even if you don’t catch any fish – maybe you’ll meet a new friend or find a glass float or some other special treasure.” Inspiration can always be found at the edge of the ocean or on the banks of the river.

Although Soeby’s artwork has been extremely popular on the coast for over a

Located deep in the Siuslaw National Forest, Drift Creek Falls is an impressive waterfall that is accessible by hiking a 3.5 mile loop beginning at a parking area roughly 10 miles inland from Lincoln City. Fine dining with a spectacular view THE BAY HOUSE RESTAURANT The building that overlooks the eastern edge of the Siletz Bay has been a restaurant of one sort or another since its construction in 1937, but it wasn’t until 1978 that it was named The Bay House and began offering first-class dining with outstanding food and wines. Forty years and several expansions later, The Bay House still offers an exceptional culinary experience featuring seasonal New American cuisine and a wine list with over 2000 selections. The million-dollar view of the Siletz Bay and Salishan Spit will perfectly complement your dining experience, especially during powerful winter storms or when the sun is setting below the Pacific Ocean.

You’ll fit right in SNUG HARBOR Said to be the oldest continually operated bar on the Oregon Coast, the Snug Harbor has been serving the Taft area since the early 1930s. You’ll love the rough-hewn cedar and fir furniture and siding that was milled on site from local old growth timber! It’s the perfect meeting place for both locals and visitors alike, featuring a full bar with a variety of great beers on tap, and offering a large breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. Live music or karaoke is performed every night of the week, and The Snug also has a cool back patio and even an outdoor rooftop seating area.
