A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
When the season changes it forces us to rethink how to we are going to live and the changes we need to make in our life. The easy modifications are raingear, sporting activities, holiday preparation and celebration and maybe digging out a set of snow chains for the car. One of the most often thought about and least acted on is our health. Every year, we make some solid resolutions towards fitness and weight loss that are long forgotten by July 4th. However, not you and not this year. This has got to be the year that you look in the mirror and tell yourself, “It’s time for a change”. Now, give some thought as to how this change must occur. If you do the exact same things you have been doing all last year and expect to have something different occur…..well it won’t. So, start with identifying the change you would like to see in yourself. Next, tell someone about what outcome you are seeking. Collect resources and tools that will help formulate a plan and talk to friends and family, they may have ideas that you haven’t even thought about. Find someone to go with, it has been proven that higher success is achieved when you reach out to others and not try to go it alone. Then the hard part, stick to it, even when you don’t want to do the work, keep your eyes on the end result and believe true change takes time and you must put in some time. The last suggestion I have for you is to keep a log of what you do. This is the hardest part of all, not because jotting down what you did that day is hard, but because the log is a special reminder of where you have been and it will keep you accountable to where you want to go. The log is your friend, it will keep you honest and help motivate you. You may not like the log, but, you will enjoy reaching your desired result and looking back with great satisfaction and accomplishment. If the Parks and Recreation Department can help you with any of your Health needs, please give us a call. Thank You, Jim Protiva Parks and Recreation Director j.protiva@newportoregon.gov

Bruce has a background as an optician and worked for 30 years in that field. He has a BS degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Physics. He learned to play guitar in high school. His interest in music combines with his woodworking hobby, and he has made many instruments, including the mandolin and banjo Debbie will be using in class. COAST HILLS CLASSIC MOUNTAIN BIKE RACE MAY 5TH 2013 Following the fantastic success of last year’s inaugural race we are excited to announce that the Coast Hills Classic will return on the same weekend for its second year. Last year’s event featured a buffet of mud that left both pros and beginners with huge smiles on their faces, and dirt everywhere else. The event is known for its spectacular course, with exiting single-track, spectacular bay views, and one of the most electrifying rider-fan interactions of any race around. The CHC is the main fundraising event for the Newport Parks and Recreation Department’s Youth Scholarship Program, and last year was able to help many kids participate in sports programs who otherwise would not have been able to. We are pleased to announce that the dynamic duo from Bike Newport, Daniella and Elliott Crowder along with members of their race team and many members of the cycling community, will again be providing the heart and soul of this event.
