By Phil Sollers you’re in Depoe Bay, it’s far better to get the Horn than the bull! Often referred to by locals as the center of town (because it’s the tallest building in the city and is located near the only stoplight), The Horn Public House and Depoe Bay Brewing Company has something for everyone. Although the business has only been open for less than a year and a half, The Horn has a very comfortable and welcoming feel, and seems as if it’s been around much longer. When you visit, you’ll find a comprehensive lunch and dinner menu, a wellstocked bar in both the upstairs dining room and on the ground floor, a full-service game room, and a gift shop stocked with mostly-Oregon offerings.

If

The building where The Horn is now located had been the home of a Depoe Bay institution named The Spouting Horn, which had been operated as a restaurant since 1927. Three unique photos of the building from the 1930s and 40s adorn the walls of the upstairs dining room, and provide a window into the restaurant’s past. The Spouting Horn was named for the “blowhole” on the Pacific Ocean seawall, in the middle of town, that shoots seawater 40 feet into the air when rough high tides pass through a fissure in the rocks. Not only does the building provide an excellent view of that spouting horn blowhole, and the Pacific Ocean to the west, but it is situated just above the bay, which has the distinction of being “The World’s Smallest Navigable Harbor.” You’ll be able to see the fishing boats come into the harbor, and if you watch closely, you might see a whale spout or breach out in the ocean.

When owners Jerome and Clary Grant bought the building in 2014, it was in extremely rough shape and needed to be entirely rebuilt. Jerome explained that it took nearly a year to demolish, “and was then completely transfigured (as opposed to renovated) from joist to frame.” In many places, a new foundation had to be poured, and all of the support beams in the building had to be reset. The kitchen was also remodeled to include all of the necessary equipment for a 10-barrel brewing system, and a bakery was added. When they had rebuilt the structure, the Grants were able to redesign the space with high-quality, classic materials that came primarily from the original building, around the state of Oregon and throughout the Pacific Northwest. Jerome explains, “We redid this place to make Depoe Bay proud. We rebuilt with as much of the original material as possible, and tried to source the rest locally whenever we were able.”

Sometimes You Get the Bull, and Sometimes You Get The Horn - Destination Depoe Bay – 9

From the massive polished slab of big leaf maple that serves as the bar top on the ground floor and the redwood slats that side it, to the sections of old wooden bowling alley lanes that were repurposed into the top of the upstairs bar and all of the restaurant’s tabletops, it’s easy to see that the Grants put a lot of love into their restaurant. Handmade wooden chairs compliment the tables and bar, and are built high enough so guests can properly take in the view of both ocean and bay. You’ll also notice the inlaid compass rose, consisting of five different kinds of marble that greets guests who enter the restaurant through a large custom pivot door, complete with beautiful etched glass panes.

The lunch and dinner menu consists of burgers, sandwiches and an assortment of pizza choices, and includes favorites like cod fish and chips and grilled oysters. In addition to the Depoe Bay Brewing Company beer offerings of Depoe Bay IPA, Sea Witch Porter, Moby Red, Golden Ale, Harry Allen’s Russian Imperial Stout, and Walvus Bruin, there are also a large variety of local and regional beers and ales. Depoe Bay Brewing Company supplies kegs to more than 50 offsite taps throughout Lincoln County, and the brewing company is producing barrelaged beer with barrels that held Crater Lake Rye, and are now filled with Imperial Red Rye IPA.

Wade’s House: A Healing Place of Hope

Wade’s Studio Wade’s House: A Healing Place of Hope, has emerged as Wade’s Studio, part of the Silver Heron Gallery’s Artist in Residence program. During the past year abstract-expressionist painter, EA Kennedy, used Wade’s Studio, always brimming with light and hope, as her creative portal and outlet for her own healing experience here in Depoe Bay on the Oregon Coast. The result of this enlightening experience is culminated in the recent “The Tide Giveth” Exhibition at the Silver Heron Art Gallery. During EA Kennedy’s reflective walks along the beach, she gathered shells, stones, and other found objects which she integrated into this current collection.

Did

Have a Whale of a Time!

you know that Depoe Bay is the “Whale Watching Capital of the Oregon Coast”? Visitors come from all over the world to catch a glimpse of whales blowing, breaching, diving down and rolling up out of the waves of the Pacific Ocean. Winter and spring are the best time to see the massive mammals on the Oregon Coast, as 20,000 grey whales annually migrate from Alaska to Mexico in December and January, and then travel back to Alaska in late March. But in Depoe Bay, great whale watching happens beyond winter and spring because a pod of grey whales live just off the rocky shore of the town from March through December. So no matter when you’re in Depoe Bay, your chances of seeing a whale are good!

14 – Destination Depoe Bay - Have a Whale of a Time!

The west side of Depoe Bay sits at the edge of a giant seawall, so there are many observation points from the shore. Whether you’re perched along the west edge of town, walking across the ocean side of the bay bridge, or sitting in one of the restaurants that look out to sea, you’re in the perfect spot to see a whale. The best strategy for viewing whales from the land is to find a place that looks out over the ocean, and to scan the waves for any sign of whales; if you have binoculars or a telescope, you can look even further out to sea. Often, the first sign of a whale you’ll see is their enormous spout, so keep an eye out for a stream of water that shoots above the waves. One of the best places to see whales from shore and learn all about their migration pattern and behavior is from the Oregon State Parks’ Whale Watching Center. The Center is located just to the north of the bay bridge along the seawall (at 119 NW Hwy. 101),

and friendly staff are ready to answer questions and help you search for whales. The Center is also the headquarters of the Whale Watching Spoken Here volunteer program, which sponsors winter and spring whale watching weeks. The Center is open from 10 am to 4 pm on Wednesday through Sunday. For more information about the Whale Watching Center, call (541) 765-3304 or email them at Whale.watching@oregon.gov

You can also book a reservation on a charter boat to get out to where the whales are, and you’ll have the opportunity to see them much more closely than you will from the shore. Depoe Bay is home to four well-established charter boat companies, and all of them offer regular whale watching trips that leave from the harbor. Take a look at these local charters, select one that works best for you, and contact them about times, rates and availability.

Fish On!

Charter a Fishing Boat from Depoe Bay

By Phil Sollers all starts with a slight tug that quickly turns into an epic struggle… ”Fish On!” Before you know it, you’re trying to catch your breath while inspecting the fresh catch thrashing about on the end of your line! After landing this delicacy from the deep, the only question is deciding which hearty greens and fine wine will fully complement your evening meal. Depoe Bay is home to a couple of excellent sport fishing charter companies. Both Tradewinds Charters and Dockside Charters have safe and comfortable fishing fleets with experienced captains and crew ready to embark on daily deep sea angling excursions. Tuna, salmon, halibut, cod, crab, and a variety of rockfish are available (when in season), and these local charter captains will skillfully guide you to where these fish can be found. Sport fishing trips are affordable and frequently available, so you will have no difficulty scheduling a day out on the ocean. Both Dockside and Tradewinds have various packages available that last for five, six, or eight hours.

It

22 – Destination Depoe Bay - Fish On!

Both charter companies will have all of the equipment you will need for your fishing trip, but be prepared to bring some other essential items. In addition to the charter fee you will need an Oregon fishing license; if you don’t already have one, daily licenses may be purchased with your charter package. To insure a comfortable experience, dress in layers, complete with a rain jacket, hat and gloves. Bring a thermos of coffee or tea, a canteen of water and some snacks or a picnic lunch. Also bring a little cash to tip the captain and crew and to pay for the fish cleaning services at the end of your trip, and be sure to leave a cooler with ice in your car to transport your fresh fish.

If you choose to go with Tradewinds, you will meet at their office just to the north of the bay bridge and take the stairs down to the dock, and if you choose to fish with Dockside, you will meet at their office in the Port of Depoe Bay by the US Coast Guard station. The captain and crew will invite you on board, and will discuss safety, fishing and boating regulations, how to use your gear, and the procedures for catching and handling your fish. The boat will then motor under the bay bridge, through the channel and out into the Pacific Ocean. Your boat may drop crab pots to be retrieved later on the way back into the docks, if you or other guests have chosen to add that option.

Fish On! - Destination Depoe Bay – 23

Once on the open ocean, the captain will navigate a course to where various schools of sport fish abound. The captain and crew will instruct you on how and when to drop your lure into the depths – this is when the magic happens! The anticipation and excitement is immediately heightened when a member of your fishing party cries, “Fish On!” It’s easy to lose track of the time when the fish start biting,

24 – Destination Depoe Bay - Fish On!

and the intervals are marked by catching fish or reeling in your gear and moving to a new location to find an unsuspecting group of hungry fish! Before you know it, the fish are piling up in the plastic tubs and buckets, and it’s time to return to the harbor. Fish cleaning services are available back at the docks for a small fee, and Dockside Charters offers vacuum packing and fish storage. ...Continued on page 26

Visit Depoe Bay for the Fleet of Flowers By Phil Sollers

S

pend this Memorial Day at the 73rd annual Fleet of Flowers, a local celebration to observe the memory of loved ones, especially those who were lost or buried at sea. The Fleet of Flowers has been held every Memorial Day since 1945, and was started after a tragic event where two local fishermen died while trying to save the lives of other fishermen trapped on a struggling vessel. Recognized as one of the most spectacular Memorial Day observances in the United States, the Fleet of Flowers has grown over the years to include members of the Armed Services and firefighters who have given their lives in the service of others. The catastrophic event that prompted the first Fleet of Flowers happened on October 4, 1936, when the fishing troller, Norwester, was trying to return to harbor, and was caught in an incoming storm. Two local fishermen, Roy Bower and Jack Chambers, had just returned to the harbor when they saw that the Norwester was in trouble. The storm increased rapidly, dense fog 28 – Destination Depoe Bay - Fleet of Flowers

moved in, and darkness was falling when Bower and Chambers rushed out in Bower’s boat, the Cara Lou, to help the disabled vessel. The storm raged all night, and the sea was so rough that no other boats were able to leave the harbor to help with the rescue. Luckily, the Norwester was able to tie to an offshore buoy, ride out the storm, and return the next morning with all four fishermen safely on board. The Cara Lou was not

so

fortunate, and washed ashore later that day. Sadly, both Bower and Chambers had died from exposure. Family and friends gathered a few days later to scatter the heroic fishermen’s ashes and fresh flowers into the Pacific Ocean. Both Bower and Chambers were posthumously awarded the prestigious Carnegie Medal for heroism. The first Fleet of Flowers was held nine and a half years after the catastrophe. The event has changed very little over the

years, except to add wreaths of flowers that honor deceased fishermen, servicemen and women, and first responders. The ceremony starts on shore in the Port of Depoe Bay; then a fleet of local fishing boats loaded with flowers pass under the bay bridge, pass a US Coast Guard boat, and form a circle just within sight of the shore. A Coast Guard helicopter drops the first wreath into the

center of the circle, and all of the fishing boats add wreaths to the ocean as military jets pass overhead. The event has always been planned and carried out by volunteers, and relies on donations for funding. The Chowder Bowl serves up burgers, sandwiches and seafood for lunch and dinner, but as their name suggests, it’s all about the chowder! The other fresh seafood options are amazing as well, but everyone loves the chowder in a bread bowl. Have I mentioned the chowder? Some say it’s the best on the coast.
