Riding the cycles of a family business
Bike Newport keeps bikers on track while spreading the word about the joys of cycling

By Jon Bell for Austin Family Business Foundation After seven years spent running their own restaurant in Grants Pass, Daniella and Elliott Crowder decided it was time to get back to the beach. Born and raised on the coast in Santa Cruz, Calif., the couple had just had their first child, Elliott, and were looking for a business that might be a little less labor intensive than a restaurant. And, both the Crowder’s have long been avid cyclists. So when the opportunity to buy a bike shop on the coast in Newport arose in 2005, they had their solution. They bought the shop, named it Bike Newport and headed for the beach. “Leaving a business that was working, selling our house and uprooting our family to move to a separate town. It was a very big decision in our lives,” says Elliott Crowder. Nearly six years later, it appears to have been a good one as Newport has grown into a popular pit stop for cycle tourists pedaling the length of the Oregon Coast. Cycling has also become more widespread in the small coastal town, partly as a result of Bike Newport’s advocacy efforts, which have included hosting regular rides and safety events, lobbying for bike signs and “sharrows” on the roads and otherwise spreading the gospel of good riding. “It means a lot to see how the cycling community has evolved since we’ve been here,” Crowder says. With a goal to rent a space for two years, establish the business and eventually purchase their own building, the Crowder’s were not having any luck in finding the right property that would accommodate their needs. So instead, in 2007, they purchased a piece of land, on Highway 101 and Northwest 6th Street in Newport, and built a custom designed steel building to be placed on the lot. The new location opened in 2008 and has been attracting cyclists ever since. Bike Newport carries a full line of bicycles, gear and accessories, and it offers full maintenance and repair services as well.

The building is more than just a place for Bike Newport customers. To their employees, it is also a place where their families spend a significant amount of time. Service manager, Darin Viar, and his family essentially came with the business when the Crowder’s bought it. Nowadays, Viar’s son, Josh, is an accomplished bike mechanic who can hold down the fort at Bike Newport if need be. Viar’s teenage daughter helps out in the office, his younger son tends to the yard work, and young Elliott Crowder also helps out, keeping the kids’ area clean. “They are all here every day,” Daniella Crowder says. “The school bus drops them off at the door. The kids are all being brought up here.” Because they are such active cyclists, the Crowder’s have been able to mix their family and their business fairly successfully, and for that they are thankful. “Always remember that you’re lucky to be able to work with your family,” Elliott Crowder says. “It’s a beautiful thing to be involved with your family and your job at the same time.” The shop recently expanded its offerings to include women’s clothing, and the Crowder’s have long-term goals to someday expand into camping, hiking, kayaking and other outdoor recreational gear. “There’s no place like that in Lincoln County,” Daniella Crowder says. “That’s why . . . when we built the store, we made sure we had enough room to expand.” Bike Newport has also become known for the amenities it provides to cyclists passing through town. In addition to parts, service and some friendly recommendations for local food and drinks, Bike Newport also offers up a cyclist lounge. There, bikers can lounge on a sofa and watch TV while their bikes are being worked on, grab a shower and even do some laundry. “It’s everything they need to take a little break and have a little feeling of home,” Daniella Crowder says.

Poolside Jan’s Janet Davenport has owned Poolside Jan’s, which is a mobile spa and pool maintenance business, for 17 years. When her close friend and mentor Jim Burton passed away a little over 3 years ago, Davenport decided to take over where he left off. He was instrumental in helping her get started in the industry. In addition to hot tub and swimming pool maintenance, Poolside Jan’s carried chemical products and supplies. The store features Columbia Spas hot tubs that are manufactured in Jefferson, Oregon. A free water analysis is available; customers need to bring in a water sample to learn what they need to add to their hot tub water to keep it in line with the state health code. Davenport said Poolside Jan’s has good customer service because they can help the customers through the entire process of purchasing a hot tub, as well as maintaining and repairing it. “When I first started my business, I was led by God. He inspired me,” she added. “I thought it was just going to be a small business to make a little tiny bit of extra money, and it ended up flourishing and growing, and I think that’s all part of customer service.” One of the great services that Davenport offers is she caters to commercial accounts, such as motels, by delivering supplies so their maintenance personnel can keep hot tubs and swimming pools maintained. Cynthia Luxford is a state licensed, certified professional midwife who owns and operates the midwifery service which includes a Freestanding Birth Center and home birth practice. Your prenatal care includes visits every 3 weeks during the first 7 months of your pregnancy. You will be seen twice in the eighth month and then weekly until the
birth of your baby. Visits are made either at the Birth Center, or in the convenience of your own home. Each visit lasts at least one hour, usually two. During your visits you will have time to ask all the questions you have and we will give you as much information as you need concerning your pregnancy and unborn baby. All necessary lab work is done and orders can be given for ultrasounds as needed. When planning a birth center birth, you will have a list of items to bring with you to make your stay the most comfortable. There is a full kitchen to prepare any meals you would like and two bathrooms for your convenience. You should arrive here in active labor and then the staff of Home Sweet Home Birth will attend to your needs while you are in labor. You can relax with water here by soaking in the deep tub, or sitting on one of the seats
in the shower. You can walk around the center, inside or outside. There is a large open area with a garden and Cynthia’s beautiful farm. The pastoral, peaceful setting is very beneficial for laboring mom and baby. Waterbirth is very popular and we are experts at providing you with this option. If you are planning a home birth, the midwives of Home Sweet Home Birth will arrive at your home when you request them to. All of the necessary supplies and equipment come with them. You may request a birthing pool to be set up at your home. We will assist you in preparing this and emptying and taking it down when you are done with it. Whether you are planning a Birth Center or home birth, you can expect the same training and equipment to be present at your birth. Cynthia is trained in neonatal resuscitation and advanced life support. She
carries oxygen and infant and adult resuscitation equipment. She carries IV equipment and solutions and antihemorrhagic medications to stop bleeding. She also is able to suture under local anesthetic and repair perineal lacerations if they occur. Newborn metabolic screening is performed at one day and two weeks (PKU), and the Birth Certificate and Social Security Number paperwork will be completed and submitted. You will receive a keepsake certificate with your baby’s footprints and birthday information printed on it.
