THE GOOD LIFE
NOAA officer enjoys time aboard ‘Reuben Lasker’ BY DENNIS ANSTINE For the News-Times NEWPORT – For Lt. David Vejar, an operations officer aboard the fisheries survey ship Reuben Lasker,

choosing the NOAA Corps over the six other U.S. uniformed services was an easy decision. It has worked out well for Vejar, a San Diego native who joined NOAA more than seven years ago and is now stationed in his hometown, which is the homeport for the state-of-the-art fisheries vessel. “I’ve always been attracted to the ocean growing up in San Diego,” Vejar said recently while the ship was docked at Newport’s

The fishing net of the NOAA R/V Ruben Lasker is seen here on the deck of the 208-foot ship on Wednesday, July 27. Only in its first year of operations, the Lasker has logged more fishing days than any other NOAA vessel as part of its ongoing study of fish in the Pacific.
from previous page NOAA Pier. “I joined NOAA because its mission is research and it doesn’t go to war,” he added. “So it was a good choice for me.” The 208-foot ship spent three days in Newport in late July on the first leg of its 80-day mission (June 28-Sept. 22) along the West Coast. In 2014, the vessel became the last of five stateof-the-art NOAA fisheries survey ships to be commissioned over a 10-year period. It boasts a maximum speed of 14 knots, a range of 12,000 nautical miles, and can remain at sea for 40 days. Under the command of Cmdr. Kurt Dreflak, its entourage includes six NOAA Corps officers, 15 scientists, six engineers, 25 civilian wage mariners and six deckhands.

operating up to 185 meters from the home vessel. Reuben Lasker is engineered to produce much less noise than other survey vessels, allowing scientists to study fish populations and collect oceanographic data with fewer effects on
fish and marine mammal behavior. “Reuben Lasker and its sister ship, Bell M. Shimada, moves NOAA Fisheries into the next generation of fisheries science and monitoring,” said Eileen Sobeck, assistant NOAA administrator for its Fisheries Service. “The new sensors and enhanced capabilities add to our ability to promote sustainable fisheries, recover endangered species and restore habitat upon which they depend,” she added. The advanced technologies also enable NOAA to measure, monitor and map living marine resources with increased efficiency and precision, allowing it to operate while managing to keep costs down.
ologist who served as the director of NOAA’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center in San Diego. Lasker directed a renowned research group that focused on the survival and transition of young fish to adulthood, a topic with implications for fisheries management throughout the world. Lt. Vejar said he feels privileged to serve aboard the Reuben Lasker because of its important mission, but also because he enjoys the ocean travel. He didn’t spend much time off the ship during its three days in Newport because he was the deck officer who stayed behind while the rest of its crew “hit the beach.” “It’s OK,” he said. “I like the travel more than anyA pedigree thing. We just spent nine The vessel is named after months going to Antarctica the late Dr. Reuben Lasker, and back, so I’m not coma pioneering fisheries bi- plaining.”
Traveling as far as the northern tip of Vancouver Island during the current mission, the ship’s duty is to “estimate the biomasses, distributions and biological compositions of populations of coastal pelagic species and hake.” The survey includes collecting data on anchovy, Pacific sardines, mackerel, krill, squid and rockfish. The vessel also gathers information on marine mammals and turtles during its eastern Pacific missions. Much information, for example, is gained from fish through removal of their otolith, which is a structure located in their vertebrae. Counting the annual growth rings on an otolith often estimates the age of a fish. The ship uses two small NOAA 11 – NOAA Lt.
