A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR This has been the craziest winter following the warmest fall anyone around here can remember. I like snow and I like the cold, but not so much on the beach. I expect to find snow at the higher elevations of our mountains and I expect to have some high winds and rain here on the coast. I just didn’t expect the extremes that we have seen. Some will say “Global Warming” and others will blame “Mother Nature” but I say “Don’t worry, be happy”. Happiness is a personal choice. How we embrace change is a personal choice. Worrying about what might happen without adequately preparing is actually a choice too. So, pull out that raincoat, boots or coat and go for that walk anyways. Plan to do an activity that makes you happy and stick to the plan, regardless of all the distractions that will try to get in the way. I think you will be glad you did, plus it will affirm that you are in control of your days and not the weather outside. This spring let’s take notice of all the flowers and beauty that we have all around us. Planting a garden is great fun and can produce fresh things to eat or to beautify your surroundings. Start with something you can handle and build on that success as time allows. Cleaning up the clutter around your home and sprucing up the front or walkway to your door can help transition into spring too. As I look forward to more daylight and less harsh elements, I have been filling my calendar with all the events, shows, races and opportunities available. I know it will be impossible to make it to everything, but I also know if I don’t get my recreational calendar together something might be forgotten. The time to get started is right now. We now offer all our annual pass holders access to the following classes at no additional cost: Stretch & Flex, A Matter of Balance, 10/10 Walking Class, T’ai Chi, Energetic Qigong and our new MAC class (Moderate Aerobic Conditioning Class) with instructor Jacquelyn Oakes. Recreation Center passes allow residents and non-residents unlimited use of the walking/jogging track, cardio and strength training areas, staff, and all gymnasium drop-in activities. MAKE A DIFFERENCE! DONATE TO OUR YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP FUND. Our Youth Scholarship Fund provides assistance to children in financial need, allowing them to participate in some of the great structured activities offered through the Newport Parks and Recreation Department. This program is funded by events such as the Coast Hills Classic Mountain Bike Race, and generous donations from community members. REGISTRATION The following information pertains to Spring 2014 registration for Newport Parks and Recreation activities. Listings of the activity/class dates, times, fees, etc. are located in each section of the Activity Guide. GENERAL REGISTRATION: We ask that you pre-register for all activities and classes to avoid cancellation due to low enrollment. WALK-IN REGISTRATION: Register at the Newport Recreation Center, 225 SE Avery Street, plus some of our larger events and activities now offer online registration through our website at www.newportoregon.gov/recreation MAIL-IN REGISTRATION: Please return a completed registration form with payment by check or money order to Newport Parks and Recreation Department, 169 SW Coast Hwy., Newport, OR 97365. LATE REGISTRATION: Participants joining a class at its mid-point or beyond will pay 50% of the original fee. There will be no prorated amount prior to the midpoint of a class. Late registration will only be permitted pending instructor approval and space availability. PAYMENT METHODS: All programs and reservations require full payment of fees at the time of registration. The Newport Parks and Recreation Department accepts Visa, MasterCard, and Discover, cash, and checks or money orders made payable to “The City of Newport.” REFUND POLICY: Full refunds will be given if this Department cancels classes. At the participant’s request, prorated refunds will be given after a class begins, subject to a $5.00 service charge to recover administrative expenses. Please allow 2-3 weeks for processing. SCHOLARSHIPS: Scholarships are available for certain programs to those who qualify as funds allow. Please contact us for current information. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Financial assistance is available to City of Newport residents who qualify under the Financial Assistance Program. PHOTO USAGE: On occasion, staff may take photos of participants. ENERGETIC QIGONG—5 ANIMAL FROLICS Free with Annual Pass Wednesdays, 11:00 am — 12:00 pm Drop-in price $5.00 – First class is free 10 class punch card--$40.00, 20 class punch card--$70.00 Instructor: Darren Villeneuve Crane, Tiger, Bear, Monkey, Deer--The Five Animal Forms represent the world’s oldest continually practiced exercise form--over 2000 years! This set, which imitates the movements and spirit of these animals is fun and challenging, and is great for improving balance, agility, strength and posture.

RESTORATIVE QIGONG—8 PIECES OF BROCADE Free with Annual Pass Tuesdays, 11:15 am – 12:00 pm Drop-in price $4.00 – First class is free Instructor: Darren Villeneuve Since the 1st century, AD this set of 8 simple exercises has helped practitioners develop their strength, balance and poise. People with balance and strength issues who might find a regular tai chi or qigong class too strenuous are invited to join us for this low-key, 45 minute class. Both seated and standing versions of each exercise will be taught and practiced. The basic principles of t’ai chi will also be taught. Darren has been studying and sharing his enthusiasm for this art for over twenty-five years.

A MATTER OF BALANCE: MANAGING CONCERNS ABOUT FALLS Free with Annual Pass Mondays, 10:00 am -12:00 pm Session: April 7 – June 2, No Class May 26 (8 classes) $10.00/8 week session (no drop-ins) Instructors: Darren Villeneuve and Karen Smith, PT, Cert. M.D.T. Are you missing out? Have you lost opportunities to spend time with family and friends because of concerns about falling? Do you spend less time enjoying your favorite activities because you fear you might fall? If so, A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls can help you get back to the people and pastimes you care about. It only makes sense to be concerned about falling, but letting the fear of falling hold you back from active living is even more dangerous. Limiting your activities leads to increased physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater, and increased isolation and depression can result from limiting interactions with your family and friends. The strategies taught in A Matter of Balance will improve your quality of life and help you stay independent! If you are an adult who is worried about the risk of falling, A Matter of Balance will help you reduce your fear and increase your activity levels. You will learn how to change your environment to reduce fall risk factors, to set realistic goals to increase your activity, and learn simple exercises to increase your strength and balance

April 15 & 17 6:30 – 8:30 pm $20.00 for two-night class Instructor: Clint Murphy Learn basic techniques to defend yourself in different situations. This class will be part lecture and part hands-on demonstration. This class will be cancelled if minimum is not reached, so please be sure to preregister. Past students of this class are welcome to attend to practice and refresh their skills, both nights or second night only. There will be no charge for past students and no registration required. (Please check before coming to be sure class has not been cancelled due to low enrollment.)

MODERATE AEROBIC CONDITIONING CLASS Free with Annual Pass Tue. & Thur., 10:45 –11:45 am 10 classes/$50 $6.50 drop-in fee - First class is free Instructor: Jacquelyn Oakes This moderate aerobic conditioning class is a low impact workout with great intensity and energy levels. All the muscle groups are conditioned to achieve over-all levels of fitness. Drop-ins are always welcome!

Mondays & Wednesdays 5:30 – 6:30 pm (no class on May 26) Fridays 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Punch cards: 10 classes/$50.00, 20 classes/$100.00 or $6.50 drop-in Instructor: Rebecca Cheek Pilates is an exercise program that works the core muscles of the body (upper and lower back, abdominals and gluteus maximi) and can be modified for all bodies and abilities. This class will increase your strength and flexibility, tone your major muscles, and even reduce or eliminate long-term aches such as lower back pain.

Instructor: Amy Bendel Amy has been a Zumba instructor since January 2011. Her passion for Zumba is contagious and is what fuels her to lead energetic classes with routines that are easy to follow but also provide the cardio necessary to help you reach your fitness goals. Her classes are known for having a laid-back atmosphere where it doesn’t matter if you’re a size 2 or 20, you will fit in and have fun.

BEGINNING ARGENTINE TANGO - LESSON & PRACTICE Saturdays, 5:00 – 7:00 pm $5.00 drop-in Instructor: George Fosmire There will be a lesson from 2:00–2:30 pm consisting of an ongoing weekly review of basic concepts of Argentine Tango with emphasis on a different topic each week. Supervised practice dancing will follow until 4:00 pm. Drop-ins welcome.

Starts April 6th. Level II T’ai Chi – Tuesdays, 5:30—6:30 pm & Saturdays, 10:15 – 11:15 am This class is suitable for students who have already learned the first third of the 37-posture Cheng Man Ch’ing form. Level III T’ai Chi – Saturdays, 9:00 – 10:00 am This continuing class is suitable for students who have learned the 37-posture form and wish to deepen their practice. T’ai chi combines slow, flowing movements, guided relaxation and body awareness to improve the health of the mind, the spirit, and the body. It is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. POWER SCULPT Tuesdays & Thursdays 12:00 – 12:50 pm Saturdays 8:00 – 8:50 am Punch cards (may also be used for Step Aerobics): 10 classes/$55.00, 20 classes/$90.00 or $6.50 drop-in Instructor: Julia Clemons This is a muscle-conditioning class that will incorporate the use of weights, bands, fitness balls, and pilates-based exercises to tone and sculpt your entire body. This class is great for all levels. Moves will be incorporated to meet individual fitness needs. Instructor Julia Clemons comes with 16 years of experience.

TAE KWON DO

Mondays & Wednesdays (no class on May 26) Youth & Adults: 5:30 – 6:45 pm Ages 7 and up $30.00/month Instructor: Josephine Allen Tae Kwon Do emphasizes self-control and self-discipline. It is an excellent way to garner confidence and a positive self-image. Students routinely excel in the classroom and extracurricular activities because they learn to focus their energy and center their minds. If you are interested in the martial arts, you are encouraged to attend a class and meet with instructor Josephine Allen prior to registering for the class.

The Newport Walking Club is a community club, started to encourage people in our community to get out and walk and is sponsored by the Newport Parks and Recreation Department. STRETCH & FLEX Free with Annual Pass Mondays & Wednesdays 9:30 – 10:00 am (no class May 26) 10 classes/$25.00 or $4.00 drop-in (Admission free with Annual Pass to the Rec. Center) Instructor: Heather Hughes If you are feeling stiff in your joints and less flexible in your range of motion, give Stretch & Flex a try. This class is geared toward seniors, but not exclusive!

10/10 FREE WITH ANNUAL PASS 10 Thousand Steps/10 Weeks Tuesdays, 10:30 – 11:00 a.m. 10 classes/$15.00 (Admission free with Annual Pass to the Rec. Center) Instructor: Darren Villeneuve That’s all it takes to maintain fitness! Fitness Trainer Darren Villeneuve will give an introduction to “Walking for Fitness” on the first day and assist throughout the program. Class is limited to 20 students.

She has coached competitive and recreational gymnastics and cheerleading at many private gyms, colleges, and schools throughout Oregon. She is AACCA and NFHS certified and has First Aid and CPR certifications. Kelsey feels there is nothing more rewarding than coaching. She absolutely loves sports and the athletic spirit and passing this philosophy on to our youth!

BEGINNING GYMNASTICS

3:45 - 4:45 pm Beginning Gymnastics is a program designed to introduce students to a sport full of exciting challenges (mental and physical) that will help build strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance. Athletes will be trained to do many different skills on the floor, beam, vault, and bars. Proper stretching, technique, and understanding body movement are emphasized. Safety, fun, and more fun are priorities in this class! Routines will also be worked on and exhibitions will be held several times a year.

ADVANCED GYMNASTICS

5:00 - 6:00 pm or 5:00 – 6:30 pm Students must have a basic gymnastics foundation and have experience on all equipment. Required skills: floor (forward and backward roll, cartwheel, handstand, and bridge), bars (back hip pullover, cast, back hip circle). Routines will also be worked on and exhibitions will be held several times a year.

PRE-TEAM GYMNASTICS

6:30 – 7:30 pm or 6:30 – 8:00 pm Students may register by invitation only for Pre-team. This class is designed for gymnasts that want to transition from recreational to competing and learning routines. Emphasis will be on technique, drills, and conditioning. 7:45 am - 5:30 pm $11.00/half day (up to 5 hours) $20.00/full day This is a supervised program offered every school day and on non-school days for children enrolled in kindergarten through 6th grades. Activities include art, crafts, storytelling, and plenty of gym time with dodge ball, basketball, soccer and team games, with time for homework if needed. SUMMER ACTIVITY CLUB Mon. – Fri. 7:45 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Starts June 16 3-12 years old (must be toilet trained) $90/week if paid in advance, $20.00/day, or $11.00/half day The 2014 Summer Activity Club Program for ages 3-6 will be held at the Newport Recreation Center and ages 7-12 will gather at the Clubhouse at Frank Wade Park. There will be plenty of pool time, as well as a variety of activities including field trips, sports, crafts, games, and outdoor fun. The children will be divided into groups according to age in order to create a more suitable program of activities for each group. A sack lunch and an afternoon snack will be provided. Parents will need to provide a healthy morning snack.

DO RE MI BY THE SEA Fridays 10:00 – 10:45 am Session: April 4 – June 6 (no class May 2) Ages: birth - 5 $90.00/session – additional siblings $20.00 Instructors: Debbie and Bruce Cram We all know music is entertaining and we all have our favorite music and musicians. Music makes life more interesting and adds an emotional dimension to any event that greatly increases the effect of the experience. Can you imagine a movie or a political rally or almost any large event without music? So we all like music and understand its emotional impact, but more and more studies show a direct link between music and other learning. Children with music in their educational agenda may show increased math and language skills, as music learning supports all learning. And the most magical thing of all is that your child will love the music and the learning that it inspires. This program is a ten week class. Bruce and Debbie will provide everything that your child will need to participate. This is not a drop-off program, and you as a parent are the best teacher for your child. Come ready to sing and join the activities with your child and you will both have a great time. A younger sibling (8 months or younger) of a registered child may attend free. At least one parent or adult caregiver must accompany each family group. Bruce and Debbie’s goal is to provide music for young imaginations through research- based songs and activities. Their music and movement program is designed to provide musical magic for you and your child. Be ready to visit the music of various cultures around the world, play many different colorful instruments, take countless imaginary trips, feel the pulse of our gathering drums, dance with your Teddy bear or spin with a bright silk scarf, and sing the happy songs of our music collection. Come make music and make friends with Bruce and Debbie at Do Re Mi by the Sea. Feel free to give them a call at 541 961-6447. Debbie is retired from a nursing background. Her interest in music and dance goes back to her early teens when she learned to play her guitar and loved to sing folk songs. She sang in Sweet Adelines, was secretary for a local music club, violinist in a small weekly music group, and participated in several dance programs. Bruce has a background as an optician and worked for 30 years in that field. He has a BS degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Physics. He learned to play guitar in high school. His interest in music combines with his woodworking hobby, and he has made many instruments, including the mandolin and banjo Debbie will be using in class. He sees the elimination of music programs in public schools as a tragic misfortune and is pleased to bring music back into the lives of children.

Spring Sports ROLLER SKATING CLINIC & SKATE SESSION

Skating provides great exercise while also giving you an opportunity to get out of the house and have fun! The first hour will be dedicated to beginners to learn balance and coordination. In the second hour, bring the family and friends to enjoy the excitement of roller skating. It is recommended that participants bring their own roller skates, but there are a limited number of rental skates available. Children 15 or younger must wear head protection. Sessions will be on Thursday nights, 5:30pm - 7:30pm. Daily Class Fees: $2 per child, $4 per adult, $1 skate rental Dates: April 10 – May 22, 2014 Newport Parks and Recreation will offer a variety of exciting opportunities for youth ages 5 to 14 this summer. If you feel you have a group or sport that is not represented, please see a staff member and let your wishes be known. You may call during building open hours to check on the schedules. Schedules are subject to change, but every effort will be made to adjust the schedules well in advance so that notice can be given to frequent users.

PICKLEBALL One of the fastest growing sports in America! Pickleball is a combination of tennis, badminton, ping pong, and racquetball. Fast paced, easy to learn and lots of fun. In an effort to provide a better experience for all, we have now divided our group into 2 sessions. We are always in need of volunteer coaches for our middle school and youth programs. Coaches get to enroll one child for free. You must be able to pass a criminal background check. Experience is not required. We will give you everything you need to successfully manage a team.

NEWPORT 6TH, 7TH & 8TH MIDDLE SCHOOL TRACK & FIELD

Volunteer coaches are needed!!!! Athletes in our Track and Field program will practice and compete with other kids their age in various athletic contests based on running, jumping, and throwing. Events include: Shot Put, Discus, High Jump, Long Jump, 100m Hurdles, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m and Relays. Athletes can register at the recreation center and practices will occur at Newport High School Track. The team will participate in meets against other teams throughout the county. At the end of the season, there will also be championship meet. Track meets begin in April and practices generally begin in March. Fee: $50.00 (Scholarships are available to those who qualify and as funds allow) Registration deadline: March 22, 2014 First Meet: 2nd Week of April

NEWPORT 1ST - 5TH GRADE TRACK & FIELD

Volunteer coaches are needed!!!! This is a fun program geared towards preparing kids to possibly qualify for Hershey’s National Track and Field Meet. Meets offer running events, like the 50-meter dash and the 800-meter run, and field events, like the softball throw and the standing long jump. Mini Meets will be held during practice times and an End-of-Season Meet will be held at the end of May at Newport High School. Fee: $50.00 (Scholarships are available to those who qualify and as funds allow) Registration deadline: March 22, 2014

OLALLA LAKE OFF-ROAD SPRINT TRIATHLON

Date: Coming in July The Olalla Lake Off-Road Sprint Tri features a course that is hard to beat. This race is characterized by gnarly hill climbs, both the bike and the run course feature some seriously fun and challenging hills! The reservoir is a pristine lake surrounded by tree covered hills, and the view from the top of the bike course is nothing short of breathtaking. This year’s race will offer the sprint course this year, which consists of an 800 meter swim, a 7 mile bike and a 3.1 mile run. Register online or at the Newport Recreation Center.

COAST HILLS CLASSIC MOUNTAIN BIKE RACE May 4, 2014 Following the fantastic success of last year’s 2nd annual race, the city is excited to announce that the 2014 Coast Hills Classic Bike Race will return on May 4th. Last year’s race offered plenty of muddy trails that left both pros and beginners with smiling faces and dirty bikes. Due to past success, this year’s race has been entered into the Oregon MTB XC Series which will bring additional racers to our wonderful city. The course is designed with stunning ocean views, amazing single-track and one of the most electrifying rider-fan interactions around. Once again, 100% of the race proceeds will go directly to Newport Parks and Recreation Department’s Youth Scholarship Program. Last year’s race was able to help many local youth to participate in sports programs who otherwise would not have been able too. We are pleased to announce that the vibrant duo from Bike Newport, Daniella and Elliott Crowder, along with many members of the local cycling community will again be providing the heart and soul for this amazing race. INDEPENDENT EXERCISE: Independent exercise uses two lanes of the pool providing a space for patrons to exercise independently without having to lap swim.

SOME HEALTH BENEFITS OF SWIMMING 1: Do more with less ~ Swimming offers the ability to work your body without harsh impact to your skeletal system. When the human body is submerged in water, it automatically becomes lighter. When immersed to the waist, your body bears just 50 percent of its weight. 2: Increased Muscle Tone and Strength ~ Water is a substance about twelve times as dense as air. CHAIR YOGA

Mondays, 9:30 am. Chair yoga accommodates persons who can’t get up and down easily from the floor. This style of yoga can be a very complete workout that increases flexibility and strength, while incorporating breathing techniques that are both energizing and calming. This is a self-led class.

BREATH & BALANCE

Wednesdays, & Fridays, 3:00 4:00 pm. This is a self-led gentle exercise class. Class focus is on improved breathing awareness and balance from simple exercises done from a chair, as well as walking, and selective use of balance balls. Music and social interaction enhance this gathering, allowing participants to enjoy themselves while they gently work out.

ARTHRITIS EXERCISE PROGRAM Wed. & Fri. 9:30 - 10:30 am. This self-lead fitness class is a fun way to build strength and flexibility for body and mind.

BODY SCULPTING

Mondays & Thursdays, 5:30 pm. Body sculpting (or core conditioning) is a non-aerobic, muscle-toning class led by Chris Gary. Chris has over 20 years of experience leading health and wellness classes in Lincoln County. This type of training can give you strength, muscle tone, and may lower your risk of bone loss.

Line Dancing can give you a great mind-body workout. It improves memory skill by requiring you to remember dance steps and sequences. It can help strengthen bones and muscles, increase stamina and flexibility, improve your posture and balance, and give you the opportunity to socialize at the same time. Dancing has a way of brightening up a person’s day.

KNITTING GROUP

Tuesdays, 3:00 - 4:30 pm. Crafty fun for all ages, male and female. Knitting is a great tool to keep your fingers limber and your mind sharp, while enjoying the company of other knitters, usually working on a community donation project. Supplies abound, so come and join in on any Tuesday afternoon. This group is led by Barbara Hendrix who has years of teaching experience. Free.

READERS THEATRE

Writers/Readers Theatre is an ongoing activity at the 60+ Center that involves participants writing their own stories, then preparing them for presentation in a Reader’s Theatre format. Writers do not have to read, although stories are read to one another at each weekly meeting. Pick up a copy of their published book, “Memoirs,” available in The 60+ Center Gift Shop.

WATERCOLOR CLASSES

Tuesdays, 1:30 - 3:00 pm. Class size is limited to 5. Instructor, Shirley Steinhauer is your multi-media-talented art instructor. Always wanted to try watercolors? Well, no time like the present to learn some basic skills with lots of encouragement. Free.

DUPLICATE BRIDGE CLUB Wednesdays, 6:00 pm & Fridays at 1:15 pm, and each 2nd Saturday at 11:00 am. Come enjoy a friendly session of bridge. Duplicate bridge is the most widely used variation of contract bridge in club and tournament play. It is called duplicate because the same bridge deal (i.e. the specific arrangement of the 52 cards into the four hands) is played at each table and scoring is based on relative performance. In this way, every hand, whether strong or weak, is played in competition with others playing the identical cards, and the element of skill is heightened while that of chance is reduced. This is a great game to keep your brain in shape. Watch for lessons in your area.

Mondays, 11:15 am. Lumosity is an online interactive program designed by neuroscientists to improve the brain’s core cognitive functions. Through a progressive series of fun and colorful games and visual exercises, participants can experience a measurable improvement in the way they feel and think.
