The Newport Seafood and Wine Festival Come join Newport’s biggest party

T

he population of Newport is just over 10,000, but on the last full weekend in February every year it can swell to double that number. What brings people from far and wide to the coast in the throes of Oregon’s winter weather? The promise of fabulous food, plentiful drink, and the biggest party on the Oregon coast.

The annual Newport Seafood & Wine Festival is a four-day signature event with a festival atmosphere where more than 150 vendors, including purveyors of seafood, craftspeople, and over 80 Northwest wineries offer an abundance of culinary delights and beverages in a gigantic tent in South Beach, Newport adjacent to the Rogue brewery.

For most visitors, the heart of the weekend is the opportunity to sample and purchase a wide range of top-notch Northwest wines. Associated with the event is the longest continuous wine competition in the Northwest, judged by a panel of five nationally known wine experts. As the Northwest has grown as a wine producing region, so has the competition. Each Seafood & Wine Festival wine vendor may enter up to 4

three wines in the prestigious commercial competition. The judging for the competition happens before the festival so the winners can be announced and sold at the event. This year, 153 entries were received, and 92 medals were awarded (26 gold, 39 silver, and 27 bronze). One outstanding wine is given the prestigious Joseph H. Swafford Best in Show award. In 2018, that honor went to Bradley Vineyards for their 2015 Pinot Noir.

Joseph Swafford, a recently-retired local wine shop and restaurant owner, served as the long-time judging coordinator. He has observed a dramatic increase in quality of wines in the competition, and in the Northwest over the decades. “I’ve watched Oregon winemakers struggle with the vagaries of the weather, learn what varieties of grapes do best in specific soil locations, and witnessed the successes that have brought world-wide attention to the resulting exquisite wines. We have much to be proud of from our Oregon and Northwest wines!” he reflected.

Thomas “Mac” McLaren, a local sommelier who has judged the competition from its inception,

agrees. He noted, “We’ve seen a particular improvement in the white wines entered in the competition, and we’re seeing some unusual white varietals as well.”

At the festival itself, attendees can purchase tastes, glasses, bottles, and cases of most wines, including the medal-winners. Paired with the excellent festival wines will be unparalleled seafood offerings. Newport is proud to be able to showcase the bounty of the Pacific that comes through its port every year. You’ll find crab, bay shrimp, oysters, salmon, albacore, and other local delicacies in abundance, as well as other types of food.

The peak time for the entire event is Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm, so to help with traffic flow, no tickets will be sold at the gate that day – all Saturday tickets must be purchased online, and numbers will be limited.

Increased personnel and two entrances to the festival tent will also assist in moving people through at peak times. Festival organizers warn that you’ll still have to expect waits on Saturday, though. To avoid the lines, try coming at a different time (see Insider Tips on page 7).

Parking at the event costs $5 and is somewhat limited. A better option is to take the free shuttle, which will be running frequently all over town throughout the event.

New this year is a special VIP entrance for guests holding special tickets including “Ruby Club Membership.”

The Ruby Club provides guests entry through the new VIP entrance near the main entrance on all four nights and includes a host of other benefits.

Even outside of the festival’s 50,000 foot tent there is plenty of fun to be found that weekend in Newport. The festival atmosphere spreads throughout the community, as many local businesses and organizations plan special events on the same weekend to take advantage of the crowds.

Restaurants often have special menus and live music, shops will have wine sales featuring medal winners, and the local running club sponsors a 5K road race.

Such a massive event requires the work of the entire Chamber of Commerce staff, an all-volunteer committee of two dozen, and hundreds of other volunteers who sign up to work the event. The generous sponsors make the event possible, and for the seventh year in a row, the festival’s presenting sponsor is Chinook Winds Casino Resort.

Many of the volunteers perform their duties in exchange for a three-day pass to the event. A four-hour shift is all that is required, and out-of-towners are welcome. Check the event web site for details and to sign up.

The primary purpose of the festival is to infuse a boost into the local economy at a time when it is ready for a boost. While revenues from festival admissions are reinvested in the community by the Chamber of Commerce, local organizations benefit as well. More than 20 local non-profit organizations participate as their annual fundraiser by providing services such as monitoring parking and cleaning up, and some have a booth that features one of the festival’s wineries and they ‘pour for proceeds.’

Over the last 9 years I have watched it grow and develop in wonderful ways. One thing that I am continually impressed by and very thankful for is the incredible amount of community support that surrounds this event.

It wouldn’t be possible to execute without the local committee that works year-round and 300 volunteers that come together through the weekend to create a successful event.”There are many reasons why Newport’s Seafood and Wine Festival is “The Original and Still the Best”. 5 Insider Tips for Enjoying the Newport Seafood & Wine Festival

Come Thursday night

In recent years the festival has opened quietly on Thursday evening, informally referred to as “Locals’ Night.” This is the least crowded and most laid-back time to attend, and all vendors will be set up and ready to go.

Come After 2 pm on Saturday

Peak hours for the entire festival are 10-2 on Saturday. If you are looking for a leisurely stroll through the event, you will want to avoid Saturday and enjoy a day in Newport at other shops and area attractions. If you enjoy the crowd and hoopla, come after 2 pm on Saturday and go to dinner afterwards!

Sunday is a great day

Sunday is a more relaxed environment inside the big tents. You will have more elbow room and time to really peruse the booths and enjoy sampling and buying your favorite wine.

Parking near the event, especially at peak times, can be a hassle, and it could cramp your wine-tasting style (please don’t drink and drive!). Free shuttles will run throughout town for the duration of the festival; the shuttle schedule and route map are on page 19 of this guide.

Festival Seafood Slinging chowder in Booth 80

I

t makes sense that Rebecca Cohen, a Newport native and librarian, can be found “slinging clam chowder in the tent” during the Newport Seafood and Wine Festival. “But just Mo’s,” she said, referring to the legendary restaurant on Newport’s Bayfront. “Only Mo’s, and we’re scooping it nonstop from open to close … usually about 35 gallons for a whole festival.”

Cohen has been working the corner booth (80) in the north tent as a volunteer for at least 20 years and said there’s not much she doesn’t like about it.

“It makes for great people watching,” she said, “and it’s nice and safe inside the booth. There’s about 15 of us and we usually do three-hour shifts, some of us working every day of the festival.” The booth, which represents the Yaquina Bay Optimist Club, usually grosses about $6,000 and “we clear about $2,000 to $2,500 a year,” Cohen said. “The profits go for college scholarships for Newport High seniors - four of them last year.”

She also enjoys “chatting up people when we’re not busy, which isn’t very often. But some people have been coming back every year since it started more than 40 years ago. For what reason,” she said, “they just keep coming.”

Maybe it’s the chowder?

“Well, we do use Mo’s base that’s made on the Bayfront,” she said, “though we do reconstitute it with milk cooked at the festival.

But everybody seems to like it.” And since most people who visit Newport lean toward experiencing a seafood feast during their stay, below are several other fishy booths at the festival:

Booth 59 — Asiatico Asiatico considers itself the Oregon Coast’s premier restaurant for fusion cuisine and sushi and will be serving their famous fresh sushi rolls at the festival. “We strive to serve fresh ingredients with the highest quality in mind.”

Booth 52 — Clearwater Restaurant Clearwater Restaurant located on Newport’s Historic Bayfront serves award winning and rave-worthy fresh and local food including seafood, high quality meats and specialty cocktails. Opened June 2016, Clearwater has become the new favorite for locals and visitors to the Oregon Coast, offering waterfront dining with live Sea Lion entertainment, bar, lounge and outside patio. Serving their famous Dungeness Crab Mac & Cheese at Booth #52.

Booths 25, 26 and 27 — Waldport Boosters Using fresh local seafood, the Waldport boosters will be raising funds while serving delicious seafood melts, including those with Dungeness crab, Pacific shrimp, albacore tuna, smoked salmon and blue cheese.

Booth 95 — Naturally Northwest Seafoods Serving fresh Yaquina Bay oyster shooters, Pacific shrimp cocktails and Dungeness crab cocktails.

2018 Amateur Wine Competition

Awards

T

he 2018 Newport Seafood and Wine Festival’s Amateur Wine Competition took place on Sunday, January 28th. The Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce received wines from amateur winemakers all around Oregon and Washington, as well as a few from Florida and Texas. Wines were sorted by variety and then arranged into flights to be blind tasted by a select panel of experienced judges. Scores were given for color, bouquet, taste, finish and overall impression. Twelve of the fifty-eight wines submitted earned a Gold Medal, fourteen wines earned Silver Medals, fifteen earned Bronze Medals, and seventeen of the submissions were non-medalists.

The most prestigious award of the competition, Best in Show, went to Harry and Parker Craig with Blue Heron Cellars from Portland, Oregon for their 2015 Marionberry Port. The judges awarded a perfect score of 20/20, noting the smooth and lingering aroma, deep color, and enjoyable finish of the wine. All of the judges were impressed with the high quality of the Craig’s port and commented “The taste was exactly what you would expect of a Port,” on the score sheet.

Gold medals were awarded to the following contestants: Jennifer Alderman (Nebbiolo Style), Gaylon Butler (Pinot Grigio), Gaylon Butler (Pear), Gaylon Butler (Merlot), Keith Giarrusso (Citrus Mead), Mindy Hamlin (Rose of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon), Robert Hatt (Malbec), Bruce S. Marsh (Plum Wine), Kenneth Stinger (Pinot Noir Pommard), and Michelle Waddell (Syrah).

Festival Nonprofits Several groups offer their services

O

ne of the community benefits derived from the annual Seafood and Wine Festival is the use of many local nonprofit groups, which then return funds received back into the community for a variety of projects.

Many of the groups serve as wine pourers, food handlers or parking managers, volunteering their services for the good of their organizations over the four-day festival.

“We get a nice donation for parking vehicles in adjacent lots and directing traffic flow,” said Jim Myers, whose nonprofit of choice is the Newport Food Pantry.

“Usually we split the funds with the Lincoln County HELP Program (Homeless Education and Literacy Project),” Myers said, “which totaled about $1,700 last year. This year, HELP’s not involved so we’ll get it all.”

The nonprofit uses the funding to provide snack-packs for kids during school days and food for families at the pantry, which is located on Northwest 12th Street behind Newport’s First Presbyterian Church.

The group usually delivers between 75 to 90 snack-packs each week to local schools, “though sometimes we serve more than 100 of them,” Myers said.

The Food Pantry volunteers work the nearby parking lots, including the Oregon Coast Aquarium, charging $5

per space. The “grad night” committees for Waldport and Newport high schools serve as parking crews.

“We usually have at least 15 working on our crew and school crews can have as many as 50,” he said.

The nonprofit contribution to the festival continues to grow and includes more than a dozen groups, including: • The Newport Elks serve as the festival’s cleanup crew and also as wine servers. Others serving wine as their fundraiser are Altrusa Yaquina Bay, Newport Rotary, Toledo Chamber of Commerce, Yaquina Bay Yacht Club, Lincoln City Young Professionals and Lincoln County Master Gardeners.

• Several nonprofits will be serving food, including: Waldport Boosters (crab melts); Newport Fire Department (seafood gumbo); Yaquina Bay Optimist Club (Mo’s clam chowder); and the American Legion is preparing food for the festival committee.

Volunteers serve as festival’s core

A

s the 41st rendition of the Newport Seafood and Wine Festival creeps nearer, the point man for the nearly 400 volunteers who will work the Feb. 22-25 event is already in high gear.

Doug Orr, who has served as chairman of the volunteer committee for some 15 years, took a deep breath when asked about what his life is like when February rolls around.

“Well, it’s more of an all-year-around thing now,” said Orr, who owns and operates Ocean Tire Factory in Newport. “But February is always more than just a little crazy for me.”

As a Newport native who has been involved in the festival for 26 years, the 52-year-old Orr considers it - and the ubiquitous giant tents in which the South Beach event calls home once a year - as the glue that binds the community to a common cause.

“A large majority of our volunteers are from Lincoln County,” he said, “though some live out of state and fly back every year. We have a 75 percent return in volunteers each year, which is encouraging.”

One of the things he likes about the festival is that there is always a learning curve because patrons and their attitudes seem to change from year to year.

“So you have to be flexible, tweaking what you may have done a year 22

ago because it’s always about the little things,” he said. “But I’ve become involved year-around now, always kind of working behind the scenes.”

Fortunately, he has a sub-committee that does much of the groundwork involving the volunteers, “though I oversee all of it. Someone has to, but so far I still enjoy it.”

A lot to do Orr said that long-time Newport resident Don Rowley “got me into this and eventually turned over the reigns so that I was responsible for taking down the tent at night during a rainstorm.”

But with a 35-member committee overseeing the entire event, Orr said, devotion by those involved in the process continues to grow.

“There’s always a lot to do,” he said, “whether it’s moving equipment around, managing the parking lots, checking ID wristbands, door counting, handing out wine glasses, picking up garbage or recycling cardboard.”

It never ends, he added, “at least for me and my committee members.”

They start planning for the next event each April and May and “our

involvement is pretty steady, then picks up as we get closer to the end of the year.”

The payoff for all the work is simply because it’s good for the community.

“We do it for the satisfaction of bringing a lot of money into the community at a time when we’re transitioning from winter into spring,” Orr said. “I don’t benefit, other than maybe selling a few more tires, but the community does.”

There are always some detractors, he said, including those who consider the event dangerous for the community because of the amount of alcohol consumed inside the tent.

“We’ve done the responsible thing as far as providing shuttle buses and an increase in the availability of taxis and community members providing rides,” Orr said. “So there’s a lot of opportunity for people to not drive.”

Festival officials believe that having Lincoln County’s law enforcement officers working long hours during the four-day event has minimized the impact on community safety.

Another security asset is the Lincoln County Sheriff ’s Mounted Posse, whose volunteers spend many hours patrolling the areas around the tent.

Festival to repeat last year’s success

he Newport Seafood and Wine Festival’s managers will repeat last year’s introductory offer of the Ruby Club Membership cards, which, for $150 each, allows VIP entry and several other benefits.

VIP ticketholders will gain entry to the tent for all four days and will be able to come and go as they please throughout the festival’s new VIP entry door No. 3, which is located adjacent to the general admission and E-ticket entries.

Members will also receive a commemorative wine glass and a swag bag with coupons for free offerings from the more than 50 vendors at the festival.

“We were excited to continue developing this ticket and made some changes for this year,” said Bobbi Price, the Newport Chamber of Commerce’s tourism and festival manager.

What to see while you’re not seafood-and-wining

ou’re here to eat seafood and drink wine, and by all means, please spend as much time as you can doing just that. But Newport is full of fun things to do in case you need to take a break from the giant tent.

Lighthouses Newport has two picturesque lighthouses that were historically used to guide and warn ships at sea. These historic treasures are now landmarks and tourist destinations as well as icons of our beautiful city. The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse in Yaquina Bay State Park is believed to be the oldest structure in Newport, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Located just north of Newport in the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, the Yaquina Head Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Oregon. www.yaquinalights.org

Pacific Maritime & Heritage Center Housed in a gorgeous building presiding over the east end of the Bayfront, the Pacific Maritime & Heritage Center is stunningly beautiful inside, a fitting home in which to explore Lincoln County’s maritime history and take in the bustling activity of the fishing fleet just across the street.

Nye Beach and the Bayfront

No visit to Newport is complete without a stop at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. This world-class attraction features indoor and outdoor exhibits that have repeatedly earned the Aquarium a ranking as one of the top ten aquariums in the nation. Visitors can wander through a range of permanent exhibits focused on local critters. One favorite is Passages of the Deep, named “The coolest 50 yards on the Oregon Coast!” by Spirit Magazine, a 1.32 milliongallon exhibit displaying a diverse array of marine animals including sharks up to 10 feet long. www.aquarium.org

Make sure to visit two lovely Newport neighborhoods while you’re here: Nye Beach, on the ocean, and the Bayfront, on the north shore of Yaquina Bay. Both areas have something for everyone, including unique shops, outstanding restaurants, and other attractions. On the Bayfront, make sure to stop by and say hello to the sea lions that loll (and bark!) on the pier near Port Dock One restaurant.
