Welcome back! While I was writing this edition of Travel Newport, I realized that spring and summer have so much more to offer visitors than I had first imagined! I was surprised at how many activities, restaurants, and lodging choices were new to me. I’ve had a great time exploring these places, and I’m sure that you will too. The three profiles that I have written are meant to provide a cross section of some of the best things that Newport has to offer. I designed the placement of the 36 short articles to give a sampling of what our diverse neighborhoods provide to locals and visitors alike, and you may use them as a starting point when exploring each district. Climb the Lighthouse and Explore the Headland

Agate Beach State Recreation Site This large parking lot between present-day Highway 101 and the original Coast Highway is the perfect spot to park when accessing one of Newport’s favorite beaches. AGATE BEACH STATE RECREATION SITE is almost a state park, complete with a few picnic tables, lush lawn and restroom access, but the tunnel that
runs under the old highway is the highlight that leads to the beach. When you walk under the tunnel, you’ll be amazed at how large this expanse of beach is, and how perfect it is for surfing, beachcombing, clamming, and kite flying. It’s also a great spot to view the Yaquina Head Lighthouse atop the narrow strip of land just to the north.

NLIKE CITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENTS FOR MOST COUNTRIES, it’s not hard to become a citizen of Rogue Nation. In fact, it’s easy to join! All you have to do is recite the Rogue Nation Pledge of Roguellegiance with “Big Al” Jorgensen, the president of this nation of craft beer. And best of all, you can still retain citizenship in your home country and become a member of Rogue Nation at the same time! Rogue Nation also occupies plenty of solid territory beyond its meeting halls and breweries; Rogue Farms produces many of the ingredients that are added to their brews and end up in your pint glass, bottle or growler. The Rogue Revolution was quietly started by a handful of friends in a basement in Ashland, Oregon in 1988 with the brewing of American Amber Ale and Oregon Golden, both quickly became popular beverages in the Southern Oregon town. Shortly thereafter, Rogue founder Jack Joyce met “Mo” (aka Mohava Niema, the founder of Mo’s Restaurants) while staying in Newport.
Over a bowl of clam chowder, they agreed Mo would rent Jack the vacant storefront and garage that she owned on Newport’s Historic Bayfront, under two conditions: that Rogue would promise to feed the local fishermen and that a photo of Mo in a bathtub would forever hang above the bar (and a copy of the photo hangs there and in every Rogue Meeting Hall to this day). The establishment of Rogue Nation is said to have happened in Newport with the opening of the Rogue Bayfront Public House in 1989, when famed Rogue brew master John Maier brewed his first batch of Rogue Beer in the back room. This location became Rogue’s only public house after a flood destroyed the Ashland brewpub and closed it forever, but a brand new larger facility was soon built across the Yaquina Bay in 1992 to house Rogue’s World Headquarters. Rogue’s South Beach public house is also home to Brewer’s on the Bay, Rogue House of Spirits, Rogue Spirits Distillery, and Rogue’s Rolling Thunder Barrel Works. The original Bayfront Public House is still in operation, and also offers lodging in three apartments upstairs called Bed ‘n’ Beer.

s Rogue Nation turns 30 this year, there will be much to celebrate. Rogue boasts more than half a dozen meeting halls beyond the three in Newport, with an additional three in Portland, one in Astoria and another in Independence, and two others beyond the state of Oregon, one in Issaquah, Washington and another in San Francisco, California. In addition to the meeting halls, Rogue’s first distillery opened in 2003 in Portland, and was moved to Newport in 2007 where gin and whiskey are being distilled

today. Rogue’s World Headquarters in South Beach is more than a brewery and distillery, it’s a campus, complete with bottling facility, warehouse, brewpub restaurant, gift shop, House of Spirits, museum, and cooperage. It also offers one of the best views of the Yaquina Bay and has shared space with the public Port of Newport. The cooperage, Rolling Thunder Barrelworks, is the newest part of Rogue’s World Headquarters and it’s an amazing addition. Since 2015, Rogue Cooper Nate Linquist (actually the second longest serving Rogue), has been making about a barrel a day on average with specialized equipment that mostly predates World War II. After working a variety of positions at Rogue’s World Headquarters, Linquist apprenticed with Oregon Barrel Works for six months before returning to Rogue to open the cooperage. The barrels that are made in the Rogue’s cooperage are used for aging ales, lagers and spirits.
The Rogue museum is another highlight at Rogue’s World Headquarters. Items in the museum date back to the inception of the brewery, and it’s full of all sorts of odds and ends, like handmade posters for the brewery, the brewery’s history in photos, and many of the nearly 2000 awards and medals that Rogue has been awarded. The museum also holds the remaining bottles of beers and spirits that are no longer brewed, or were part of limited collaborations (at Rogue they’re called “collisions”) with other companies. Some of the more interesting collisions include the Sriracha Stout (with the famous hot sauce company), Bacon Maple Ale (with Portland’s Voodoo Doughnut), and Wasted Sea Star Purple Pale Ale (with scientists from OSU’s Hatfield Marine Science Center). Perhaps the most unique aspect of Rogue’s operation is farming. Many of the ingredients that go into Rogue’s products were grown on their two farms.

Oregon’s Willamette Valley is world renown for the Pinot grapes that are grown there, but before there were grapes, hops were one of the biggest crops in the area. The Willamette Valley is positioned perfectly in the rain shadow of the Coast Range, where volcanic soils eroded by ice age floods grow the best hops. Willamette Valley hop farms historically date back to the middle of the 19th century, but at some point in the last half of the 20th century, hops were no longer planted. In 2008, Rogue built a 42-acre hopyard near Independence, Oregon in what at one time been the Hop Capital of the World. This year, Rogue will harvest nearly 64,000 pounds of seven varieties of hops to be shipped to the brewery in Newport.

In addition to the hops growing on Rogue Farms in Independence, crops of pumpkins, marionberries, and Jalapenos are also in production. Free range chickens and Royal Palm turkeys help out around the farm, and potbellied pigs Voo and Doo (named after the collisions with Voodoo Doughnut, of course) reside there too. Rogue Farms also grows groves of hazelnuts (more hazelnuts are grown in the Willamette Valley than anywhere else in the United States) and keeps over 7 million honeybees. Chatoe Rogue Tasting Room is also located on the farm, and welcomes guests with twelve taps and farm tours. In addition to the crops being grown at Rogue Farms in Independence, Rogue has a lesser known farm in the Tygh Valley near Mount Hood, where they are growing 200 acres or barley and 20 acres of rye.

Rogue distributes to all 50 states, and 54 countries, but when you visit one of their meeting halls, world headquarters or the farm, you’ll feel like you’re visiting a local, family run organization. Stop into Brewer’s on the Bay and Rogue House of Spirits in South Beach, and take a tour of Rogue’s World Headquarters (they are offered at select times throughout the day), and visit the original Rogue Ales Public House on the Historic Bayfront and have a pint or shot that originated right here in Oregon. Are you ready to order? With over two dozen delicious menu options in front of you, a better question might be how to choose only two or three items to design the finest meal. I’ve eaten lunch at Ove Northwest twice, and have struggled with that question both times. I’ve decided that the only solution is to return again and again until I have successfully made my way through the menu, which could be a daunting task. It is constantly changing to represent the availability of the very freshest local ingredients. I have also decided that the best way to visit is in the company of family and friends, so that we may share a few of the offerings and discuss them at length throughout the meal.

Owners Charlie and Margie Branford helped me come to that conclusion, that sharing a variety of dishes was the best way to enjoy their food. In fact, sharing and community are very much the driving philosophy behind Ove Northwest. Ove (pronounced ov-ee) is a traditional Norwegian family name passed down from Charlie’s father’s side of the family, and although it literally translates into “the edge of a blade,” for Charlie and Margie it means “family.” The Northwest part of their restaurant’s name refers to the region in which they choose to live and raise a family, and also describes the uniquely New American cuisine that guests can expect to experience. The Branfords manage the restaurant as a team. Margie designed the décor and atmosphere of the dining room and she runs the front of the house; she also builds and maintains the wine list and makes all of the desserts from scratch. Charlie works his amazing recipes into the menu and runs the many
components of the kitchen. Although the restaurant has only been open since December 15, 2017, the two work very well together and give the impression that they’ve been in business for years. Ove Northwest started as their dream, and after a year’s worth of preparation and hard work, it’s become a reality. When I recently spoke with Charlie about his life and the restaurant, his enthusiasm, excitement and love of good food was always at the forefront of our conversation. Charlie grew up in Newport, and after a stint in the Marine Corps, he returned home with his new wife (Margie was an intern in Los Angeles where Charlie was stationed when the two met and fell in love). Charlie had developed a love of cooking as a child, and realized that he wanted to make it his career after he moved back to Oregon, so he enrolled in and completed a culinary arts degree at Western Culinary Institute. He then introduced his new skills to Newport at Rogue Public House, where he worked for several years.

Charlie was asked to help Newport favorite, Local Oceans restaurant open in 2005, and although he planned to leave after the first year, he stayed on for almost ten. The Branfords moved to Australia in 2014 to help Margie’s mother recover from a medical procedure, and Charlie joined the staff at George’s on Weymouth, one of Australia’s finest restaurants. Charlie’s new position as sous chef there allowed him to work with a chef who had worked with Michelin-starred chefs in London, and he was able to learn a variety of Michelin chef tricks and secrets. These strong culinary experiences have allowed Charlie to put together a menu that he describes as “vegetable forward, seafood focused in season and as local and sustainable as possible; dishes that pull together international tastes that weave elements of one culture into the whole menu.” Whether it’s the Middle Eastern dukka (or duqua) seasoning that compliments his duck, goat cheese or avocado offerings, the North African harissa and zatar spices infused in many of his meat and vegetable dishes, or the robust tellicherry peppercorns he grinds for the house pepper, various international elements are prominent throughout the menu. In addition to offering international influences and ingredients, local and sustainable food is also at the heart of Ove Northwest’s core values. Through his relationship with Local Oceans, Charlie purchases wild seafood directly from local fishing vessels, preferring fishing techniques that use best practices in the industry as opposed to farmed fish. He explains that “Instead of giving up on the species

and eating unnatural fish, it’s better to manage the fisheries as naturally as possible. When I look out the window at the fishing boats working, I think of them as my grocery store.” Charlie strives to purchase only 100% grass-fed Oregon beef, or “the kind of beef that we should all be eating.” And he also acquires as many kinds of vegetables and micro-greens from local famers as possible. In addition to his local and sustainable food choices, Charlie attempts to waste as little as possible of the animals that he is using, like rendering the fat from beef or using the offcuts in other dishes. Recycling and composting are also important steps in running his restaurant, as they are both good for the environment and are economically smart choices. While we were talking, I asked Charlie how he would describe his restaurant, and he explained that “it should be for everybody, a comfortable destination for everyone, whether it’s a couple on a date, people wanting to enjoy a meal with family, or parents just coming off the beach with the kids.” It is the kind of place where people can get together over a meal, enjoy each other’s company and have fun.

Spend Some Time at Yaquina Bay State Park YAQUINA BAY STATE PARK is located at the north end of Yaquina Bay near it’s outlet to the Pacific Ocean. Forested with spruce and pine, the bluff is home to the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, which was built in 1871, and is believed to be the oldest structure in Newport. ay Clamming is one of those activities that is both exciting and rewarding, and can be done alone, as a family or with a group of friends or colleagues. Clamming requires little expense or preparation, and can yield enough clams for a large batch of clam chowder. Clam chowder is easy to prepare, and leftover chowder may be frozen so that you can enjoy it for several meals into the future. Let’s start foraging! Begin your clamming adventure by purchasing a shellfish license, and finding a pair of rubber boots, some warm clothes and rain gear, a bucket or ventilated sack (burlap works great), a clam shovel or four-tined rake (specialized shovels and rakes are available for purchase at most local hardware stores), a copy of the Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations, and a tide table. Pocket tide tables are available in many Newport businesses, and will help you determine when the tides are at their lowest; regulation booklets are often found in sporting goods sections of stores, or in places where fishing licenses are sold. Successful bay clamming is the most promising when you start an hour before, and finish an hour after low tide; when a large portion of the tidal flat is exposed. If you choose to use a clam rake, it’s best to comb about four inches beneath the top of the sand near the water’s edge, or around the small sandy tide pools on the flat. The rake will pull the clams to the surface of the sand where they can be collected. If a shovel is your clamming tool of choice, you will look for “shows,” or holes that clams have left in the sand at low tide; they often bubble up when

water passes over them. When you discover a show that is likely above a clam, start digging. The depth will vary depending on the kind of clam that will be found below. When a shellfish safety closure is in effect, signs are posted at clamming access points and local media informs the public, but you should always visit their updated site at oregon.gov/ODA/programs/FoodSafety/ Shellfish/Pages/ShellfishClosures.aspx or call Oregon’s Safety Hotline at: 1-800-448-2474, before you go clamming.

This recipe is amazing, and comes from a local Newport chef:
Yaquina Bay Clam Chowder 1 ONION (chopped) CELERY (chop equal amount to the onion) 1 CUBE BUTTER 3 CLOVES OF GARLIC 1-2 TEASPOONS DILL SALT AND PEPPER to preferred taste 3-4 LBS. POTATOES peeled and cubed CHOPPED CLAMS with the juice used to boil them (drain the juice through a fine sieve or cheesecloth to remove remove all sand and grit) 1/3 LB. BACON 1/2 GALLON OF WHOLE MILK, or half and half (depending on how creamy you want it)
*Thicken to desired consistency with either a flour and butter paste or cornstarch — see recipe
TOTAL PREP AND COOKING TIME: 1 TO 1 1/2 HOURS SERVES 4 PEOPLE
Boil peeled, cubed potatoes separately until near done (20-25 minutes). Cut up bacon, cook and drain, leaving a few tablespoons of liquid, turn heat to low and add onion and celery to bacon. Add butter and garlic. Add clams with juice. You may need to purchase some additional clam juice, so you have 12-16 oz. of juice to add. Add milk or half and half and continue to simmer. Drain potatoes and add them to mixture. Continue to heat and thicken at this point. Usually about 15 minutes.
* For thickening with cornstarch, dissolve with milk and add while stirring. * For thickening with flour and butter, melt a cube of butter and add flour to make a roux to add as desired- It requires extra stirring in to keep it from lumping. After thickening chowder, add dill and salt & pepper to taste.
CHEFS SECRET: Add a little garlic powder if it needs more flavor when you are almost finished cooking, and if you use cornstarch, add a cube of butter at the end.

Hike, Bike or Ride South Jetty and South Beach State Park
SOUTH JETTY borders the entrance to Yaquina Bay, with a rock wall against the channel on its north side and miles of grass-covered dunes and open beach that connect with South Beach State Park to the south. You can hike, walk, bike and even ride a horse through the many of miles of trails that twist and turn through the dunes or on the beach. South Beach State Park has an established campground where you can stay, or you can use the park for free during the day.
