The call of the wild

Lakes of Vilas, Oneida among best for viewing, hearing loons In fall, data is sent to Loon Watch where it is entered into the Department of Natural Resources database and available for management decision-making. Loon Rangers also help protect loons by spreading the word to their neighbors and other lake users to steer clear of loons on nests and on the water.
“Above came a swift whisper of wings, and as the loons saw us they called wildly in alarm and took the laughing with them into the gathering dusk. The shores echoed and re-echoed until they seemed to throb with music. This was the symbol of the lake country, the sound that more than any other typifies the rocks and waters and forests of the wilderness.” “Listening Point” —Sigurd Olson If you are looking for the best place in Wisconsin to hear the wild calls of the common loon, it can be found in Vilas, Oneida, Iron and Forest counties. Volunteers with Project Loon Watch say the latest population survey, done in 2010, showed that up to 30% of the state’s loon population resided on lakes in these four counties — an area blessed with the heaviest concentration of clean, fishable lakes in Wisconsin. It is these lakes that not only attract tens of thousands of fishermen and vacationers each year, but also one of nature’s top fishcatchers — the common loon. Loons once nested on lakes all over Wisconsin, but now are mostly confined to the upper third of the state, especially Vilas, Oneida, Iron and Bayfield counties. Out of the four loon species, the common loon is the only one that nests in Wisconsin. In 2010, volunteers with Project Loon Watch estimated the state’s population at approximately 4,000 adult loons — up from the estimate of 3,373 adult loons in 2005. Erica LeMoine, program coordinator of Project Loon Watch at the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute at Northland College in Ashland, said the estimated number of loon chicks was 600 during the sixth Wisconsin Loon Population Survey July 17, 2010. “Thus, 2010 had the

largest adult loon population estimate since the survey (held every five years) started in 1985,” said LeMoine. Past research on where pairs of loons nested found 55% of lakes of more than 20 acres in Vilas County had at least one pair. Oneida County also was found to have about 65% of its lakes populated with loons. Often referred to as a lasting symbol of the wilderness, the powerful, streamlined birds are easily identified with their black-and-white checkerboard plumage. Baby loons, which hatch in June, don’t have the distinctive markings, but will often accompany their parents. The loon is holding its own in what remains of its Wisconsin habitat, but that doesn’t mean there are no problems. People, mostly well-meaning, harass the
birds, and shoreline development continues to eliminate nesting habitat. One of the major causes in the reduction in breeding sites is that loon nests have been gradually replaced by cottages on the inland lakes in Wisconsin. Other shoreline development has further blocked areas formerly used as nesting sites. Because the loon needs to nest very close to the water’s edge, as more shoreline is developed, more birds are displaced. The loon is not built for walking or even standing; its feet are set too far back on its body, forcing it to build nests close to the edge of the water where they are vulnerable to boat wakes and changes in water level. For the moment, though, harassment seems to be the biggest problem. People like to look at loons close up, in the water or on their nests.
veys. The loon often uses a dance to distract predators away from a nest or chick. —Staff Photo By KURT KRUEGER
Young loons may be killed by boaters, and adults may be frightened off the nest at a critical time. Frightening a loon to leave its nest reduces the chance of the eggs hatching, as well as making them vulnerable to predators. Officials of Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute ask people to take an extra step and talk to those who get too close to a nesting site with a large boat, or the well-intentioned photographer who wants to shoot a picture of nesting adults with their young. Officials urge hobbyists to use highpowered zoom lenses. Harassment of the loon may result in the separation of young and parent. Once that happens, the young may die of fatigue or exposure or may be killed by predators. Whenever possible, those wanting to get a clos-
er look at the North’s bird should use binoculars or a spotting scope to make observations, according to officials. Loon Rangers For the past 35 years, Loon Watch has engaged an active volunteer network of “Loon Rangers” as its primary tool to collect critical long-term data on loons in northern Wisconsin. Volunteers attend a Loon Ranger Workshop in the spring to learn how to monitor loons, to hear what’s new in the world of loon research, and to meet other loon enthusiasts. Throughout summer, Loon Rangers watch loons on a lake where they live, vacation or visit often. They record when loons arrive, if they nested, how many chicks were produced and any potential threats to the nest site.
Call of the wild The loon yodeling on a Wisconsin lake this summer might be the same one that was there 20 years ago. The birds are said to have a life expectancy of 15 to 25 years, and return to the same body of water year after year. The familiar calls of the loon that keep anglers company on many North Woods lakes have been broken down into four classifications. The wail is probably the most frequently heard. A loon will wail when it becomes separated from the chick or if its mate fails to return. The tremolo is an aggressive response given when disturbed by a boat or predator. The yodel is also an expression of aggression and is given by the male during a confrontation. The hoot symbolizes a call of curiosity and happiness. Loons feed primarily on fish, frogs, crayfish, mussels, leeches and aquatic insects. By the end of summer, the young fledglings are capable of feeding themselves. The loon’s favorite food is the yellow perch. In late autumn, loons can be seen congregating on large lakes, ready to fly south for the winter — somewhere along the southern Atlantic or Gulf coasts. Fortunately, residents and visitors to the North Woods are able to enjoy the beauty and calls of loons each summer.

What makes a great-tasting pizza every time? What makes a great pizza? Tradition. The old ways still work, and all good cooking starts with the basics. Quality food starts with the ingredients. Only the finest ingredients should be used, starting from the bottom up, to ensure satisfied customers who come back time after time for the best pizza around. The first ingredient for any pizza is dough. It should be made with flour that is high gluten, the highest quality flour, Amber Durham wheat — the finest of all wheats, cane sugar and only the best yeast. It must be made fresh, never frozen. The dough should then be thrice raised, which takes 36 hours. This ensures the best dough possible. Pear tomato puree is the main ingredient for the next layer, the sauce. Pear tomatoes are one of the best on the market because they contain the maximum of tomato solids. The best of domestic and imported spices would then be blended to create a uniquely superb sauce with a savory taste. In Wisconsin, cheese is a very important ingredient for pizza. All the cheese used should be 100% Wisconsin full cream moz-
zarella, without one gram of artificial cheese, for the fullest flavor. A superb pizza also contains the best meat. The sausage should be 100% meat, 90% lean whole hog, blended with the finest spices for a delectable taste sure to please even the most discriminating of palates. The pepperoni should also be 100% meat, 90% lean, aged to perfection to enhance the flavor, sure to please all pepperoni lovers. Other toppings available must also be high quality. Only the best onions should be used, including Vadalia, Walla Walla, Texas 10/15, and sweet red Bermuda onions. These create a mouthwatering addition to any pizza. Green peppers must be mixed slightly with the sweetest red bell peppers for an appetizing way to liven up a pizza. California black olives also add a savory taste. For a wild appetite, sweet succulent pineapple, crispy vitamin-rich broccoli, tender flaky solid white albacore, or luscious shrimp could be added. At Alexander’s Pizza, these basics have created a tradition of quality food,
which has made the restaurant the most popular pizza stop for residents and vacationers alike. In addition, when all the ingredients are being artfully combined, nobody wants to think of a dirty kitchen or unsanitary conditions. But never fear, for Alexander’s Pizza has the cleanest kitchen you’ll find. In fact, it would even be clean enough to perform surgery. Of course, an aesthetically pleasing environment is also needed to enjoy the full pleasure of eating delicious pizza. Alexander’s Pizza offers a clean, relaxing environment with friendly service and a casual atmosphere. Games and pool are also available to entertain the kids while the food is being prepared to order. Where do you get pizza made with care and concern? Alexander’s Pizza — that’s where. Alexander’s Pizza is located on Railroad Street in downtown Eagle River. Call (715) 479-7363, and your pizza will be ready when you arrive. Alexander’s Pizza is the place for you. 14 flavors of fudge made fresh at Tremblay’s If the aroma of chocolate is not enough to draw those wandering the streets of downtown Eagle River into Tremblay’s Sweet Shop, the sight of workers forming piles of fudge into neat loaves often is. Candy lovers of all ages have headed to Tremblay’s for more than 30 years. Originally Zimpelmann’s Soda Fountain, Tremblay’s offers a variety of treats made right in the store. In addition to the store in Eagle River, there is a Tremblay’s in Stillwater, Minn., along with the original store in Hayward. Those passing by can see fudge and peanut brittle being made through the windows at the front of the store. Employees are often stirring large pots for a curious and hungry audience. Although Tremblay’s specialty is fudge, the sweet shop has many kinds of chocolate treats, including turtles, hand-dipped chocolates and chocolate clusters. Fudge balls are made in chocolate, coconut, peanut
butter, maple and vanilla flavors. Tremblay’s currently offers 14 different flavors of fudge, including dark chocolate, cookies n’ cream and peanut butter chocolate. The store offers a wide selection of candies. Many flavors of saltwater taffy and cashew and peanut brittle are popular favorites, in addition to three different flavors of almond bark. Sugar-free candy also is available, including sugarfree clusters of pecans, cashews, almonds, peanuts and raisins with vanilla or milk chocolate. Tremblay’s reputation continues to reach new customers. The shop has been featured in Midwest Living magazine. For customers’ convenience, or to send fudge as a gift, Tremblay’s can ship an order anywhere in the United States. The Eagle River store is located at 119 Wall St. Regular store hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. More information is available by calling (715) 479-8488 or toll free at 1(800) 40-FUDGE.

The annual Three Lakes Car Show is set for Saturday, June 15, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Petroleum Museum on Highway 45 north of Three Lakes. Ed Jacobsen, owner of the Petroleum Museum and sponsor of the car show, said he’s seen the number of cars entered as well as attendance at the show grow every year. “We are happy to offer this beautiful array of vintage and new cars and trucks for the public to enjoy every Father’s Day weekend here in Three Lakes,” he said. Three Lakes Winery has donated a $20 gift certificate for every car entered in this year’s show, according to Jacobsen. Winery President Mark McCain offered this incentive in an effort to boost tourism in town. “The museum and winery each offer tourism attractions in Three Lakes and have become natural partners over the years, so let’s join forces in the car show this year,” he said. This incentive adds to the free sandwich and free drink every car owner receives for attending. The Petroleum Museum, visible from the highway, has ample parking and features the museum as a back-

car show while enjoying food and beverages. There will be 14 categories of prizes with two trophies going to the top two in each category. “The trophies are nice, but the fun of displaying these classic cars is what the show is all about,” said Ja-
cobsen. “This area has a large number of these beautiful old cars that just sit in a garage year after year. This is a great place to share their beauty with our community.” For more information, call Jacobsen at (715) 6170566.
Summer Thunder Motorcycle Rally scheduled June 14-15 in Minocqua The Northwoods Summer Thunder Motorcycle Rally is set for Friday and Saturday, June 14-15, in Minocqua and will feature a variety of motorcycles, local taverns and restaurants, music in the park and scenic rides. The Choo Choo Store offers models, accessories Anyone who loved train sets as a kid, builds models as a hobby, or is interested in getting into model building needs to check out The Choo Choo Store. Located in the heart of downtown Three Lakes, The Choo Choo Store has something for everyone. The store is a familyowned retail store that specializes in model trains and accessories. Owners Dale and Janel Wolke have more than 60 years of combined experience in the retail industry and strive to make sure their customers have a great shopping experience. Visitors are entertained by the 15-foot by 16-foot running train layout that serves as a centerpiece for the store and comes complete with model buildings, trees, rocks, lakes and a bridge. The Choo Choo Store sells a number of items for the hobby model builder, but the main focus is on model trains, parts and accessories. “We are the largest train store in the North Woods area with more than 6,000 items,” said Dale Wolke. For young railroad enthusiasts, customers can visit the junior engineer department which features a selection of popular train sets that appeal to children such as Thomas The Tank Engine and Disney charac-
ter Chuggington. The Wolkes enjoy seeing customers who come in year after year continue the tradition of model train building and pass it on to younger generations. “Our customer base ranges in age from 2 years old to 92,” said Janel Wolke. “We work hard to cater to families.” This summer, The Choo Choo Store has expanded its collection of plastic models and classic games and puzzles. The extensive inventory of plastic model kits include cars, ships, aircraft and military models, great for the hobbyist of any age. The family game section includes puzzles and games that are appropriate for adults and children and features classics such as Clue, Scrabble, Yahtzee and Monopoly. Adults will find everything they need for poker, such as cards and chips, as well as high-quality chess sets. The Wolkes expanded their inventory of plastic models and family games with summer vacationers in mind. Whether stuck in the cabin on a rainy day or just looking for a way to have fun with family, The Choo Choo Store sells the products to entertain. Alexander’s Pizza brings tradition to your table More than 38 years ago, two brothers came to the North Woods seeking summer jobs. Rooted in a strong Italian community in Chicago, pizza was the staple at home and at college. Seeing a lack of pizzerias in the area, the brothers realized a great opportunity existed and opened their own pizzeria in Eagle River. Sources say the locals at the time looked down on them and called them brash boys from “Chitown.” Today, the pizzeria has become a landmark. Customers come from all over the country to taste the best pizza in the area. Even celebrities have visited Alexander’s on occasion, including professional football players; head coaches from the NFL,
NBA and NCAA; hockey players; movie stars; movie critics; national sports commentators; leaders of U.S. industries; newscasters; and authors. A visiting film critic even gave Alexander's a “thumbs up.” Although the business opened many years ago, one thing remains the same — the traditional method of making pizza at Alexander’s. The pizza is made the way Grandma Del Cristo said: use the best to make the best. The ingredients used are only the finest, which the owners ensure. The cheese used is 100% fullcream mozzarella, which is straight from the most award-winning dairy in Wisconsin, along with ninemonth-aged Romano. The soul of a pizza is the

The meat also is very lean, at 90% lean meat, with no soy fillers. For the more adventurous pizza connoisseurs, Alexander’s offers broccoli, shrimp, albacore and pineapple to create original gourmet pizzas. Diners also can try a delicious oven-roasted cheese bread appetizer — one-half loaf of freshly baked French bread, basted with butter, seasoned with garlic and aged Romano, covered with mozzarella, roasted to a honey-golden brown and lightly sprinkled with oregano. As one would say in Italian, “Qui si mangia sempre bene!” (Here one always eats well!) Employees at Alexander’s Pizza have hailed from various cities and countries around the globe. Exchange students from Hungary, England, Spain, Scotland,Lithuania, Jamaica, Poland, Belarus and the Czech Republic have made the trip across the Atlantic to work at Alexander’s Pizza. Alexander’s success is due to the quality put into each pizza. The dough is homemade and tripleraised while the crusts are rolled with care. Fishing and water sports have long been part of the North Woods tradition. St. Germain Sport Marine has been working hard to keep that tradition alive over the years. Owners Tom and Kim Christensen have created what is now one of the largest dealers of live bait, fishing accessories and water sports supplies in Vilas County. The store is a Department of Natural Resourcesregistration agent, where visitors can register all their boats, all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles. Boats and boating equipment are offered to customers for sale or rent. Fishing tackle, live bait, toys and gifts can all be found at St. Germain Sport Marine. Many different styles of boats are featured, such as Sylvan pontoons and aluminum boats. her Formerly known as Whoops, specialty toy store Imaginuity houses a selection of toys, educational products, games and puzzles at locations in Minocqua and Manitowish Waters. Owner Kay Hatch and daughter, manager Jessica Hatch, fill the shelves with products that encourage creativity and inspire curiosity for all ages, including adults. “We go on special buying trips to find cutting-edge, imagination-driven toys and games,” said Jessica Hatch. “We are always adding new products.” With customers that vary in age from infant and up, Imaginuity has fun, educational and challenging games for all ages. A unique feature of the store is that they have many interactive games on display so visitors can try before they buy. “Playing is always encouraged, it’s very handson,” said Hatch. Also offered are art supplies, books, science kits, outdoor and active play items, and a large selection of puzzles. The Hatches put an emphasis on choosing products that are creatively stimulating and educational and engage players in learning while they’re having fun. Imaginuity carries a large assortment of games for children, families and adults. “We’re finding that board games and family games are making a comeback,” said Hatch. This toy store isn’t just

A new game they have is PicWits, a multi-player game similar to Apple to Apples where players choose their own picture for a caption card that is drawn from the deck. Each round a judge chooses which picture they think best matches the caption. Whichever player has the most matchups in the end wins.

“I always shop here,” said one customer. “You can’t find these unique toys or their quality anywhere else, and I also support buying local.” Imaginuity has more than 300 products that were made in the United States and some from other countries such as Germany and Denmark. A popular new product, made in Denmark, that they carry is Plus-Plus. It is a building set similar to Legos, except that the pieces are designed to fit together at more angles, allowing for endless shapebuilding possibilities. PlusPlus offers creativity with shape, color and form, and can also strengthen motor skills. Various organic and recycled products are also featured. Imaginuity carries a large selection of Green Toys, made in the United States from recycled milk jugs. New this year, is a tractor that is super safe and versatile with no metal axles (no rust) or external coatings (no chipping or peeling). It’s even dishwasher safe and ready for
any playtime payload, whether indoors or outdoors. They also carry the Kendama skill toy. The Kendama teaches patience, dexterity, hand-eye coordination and balance, and is available in several styles and colors. In addition to their large inventory of stimulating games, they pride themselves on their enthusiastic staff, which includes several local teachers. The staff is eager to help customers find the perfect game or gift. Imaginuity is located in downtown Minocqua at 225 W. Front St. and is open at 9 a.m. daily until 6 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and until 8 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays (mid-June through August), and 5 p.m. Sundays. Gifts and art found at Trading Post stores From fine clothing to handsome Navajo rugs, from exquisite silver and turquoise Native American jewelry to Depression glass, from children's books to antique Skookum dolls, the two Trading Post stores in downtown Land O' Lakes boast an amazing mix of memorable merchandise, according to owners Barb and Harold Nehring. Trading Post Internationale and Trading Post Antiques, side-by-side stores in downtown Land O' Lakes, have been “must see” attractions for Land O' Lakes residents and visitors. Trading Post Internationale is celebrating its 68th year, while Trading Post Antiques is more than 21 years old. The Nehrings, who in 1964, took over the original business started by Harold’s family, have expert knowledge of their wares and offer friendly and personal service to customers. Throughout both stores, visitors will find the widest selection of authentic handwoven Navajo rugs in the area, including rare turn-ofthe-century masterpieces. Like the older rugs, the new Navajo rugs are examples of the highest-quality Navajo weavings. Both old and new, for the floor or for the wall, the rugs can be the perfect accessories for rustic North Woods homes or sophisticated city dwellings. Native American art enthusiasts will find a selection of handmade Ojibwe (Chippewa) woodland Indian beadwork and quillwork, including porcupine quill boxes in a wide variety. These boxes, made of birch bark and sweet grass, are decorated with natural and dyed porcupine quills. Unique to the woodland tribes, they are rare due to a

decreasing number of Native American artists able to invest the time to make them. Trading Post Internationale also features clothing and moccasins for men, women and children. Handmade Native American moccasins sit comfortably beside popular Minnetonka moccasins. Woolrich for men, women and children is a prominent name in the clothing department. Escargot and Tasha Polizi are two unique lines for women. Hartstrings, Kitestrings, Hatley and Purple Mountain add to the growing children's department, which includes a carefully selected
group of toys and books geared to nature and Native American appreciation. On the traditional side, Trading Post Internationale has a selection of elegant gifts, such as Bohemian ruby glass, Royal Doulton and Hummel figurines and crystal. These items join North Woods decorative accessories such as Native American-made birch-bark mirrors, lamps, dream catchers, and distinctive antler wall hangings by Wisconsin artist Dave Stencil. Trading Post Internationale also features individually designed, ceramic lake mugs and other personalized accessories by local artist Judy Thomas of Coun-

try Ceramics. Handmade, silver and turquoise jewelry from the Southwest, fashioned by Navajo, Hopi, Zuni and Santo Domingo Indians, as well as an array of handcarved Zuni fetishes, fill the jewelry cases at Trading Post Internationale. One-of-a-kind, elegant silver jewelry pieces from local silversmith J. Erik are offered at Trading Post as well as fish decoy carvings by noted area artist “Trapper John” Reichling. Popular copper jewelry, some set with turquoise from Native American crafters and flame-drawn copper and agate jewelry from Wisconsin copper artist
Pam Smith also are part of the Trading Post jewelry mix. A quick visit to Trading Post Antiques next door reveals a world of antiques, plus more Native American decorative arts such as Ojibwe birchbark and Winnebago black-ash baskets. Antiques include majolica, Depression glass, oil lamps, kitchenware, pottery, paintings, clocks, Jim Beam bottles, primitive and Victorian furniture, wicker, duck and fish decoys, railroad items and Oriental rugs. Trading Post Antiques also has Indian “Skookum” dolls in its comprehensive collection of handmade
items celebrating Native American heritage. “These dolls, sold as souvenirs from the early 1920s to the early 1950s, have become highly sought after. Each one is hand painted and uniquely dressed. It is rare to find so many in one place,” said Nehring. Both Trading Post Internationale and Trading Post Antiques house a variety of Hopi and Navajo kachina dolls, hand carved from cottonwood tree roots and then hand painted. Each represents a special spirit, which connects mankind to the gods in the Southwest Native American tradition. Trading Post Antiques also carries handmade Taos and Cochiti Indian drums and lamps with deerskin shades. The hides are hand cured and the drums are carved out of cottonwood. Drums and lampshades are then hand painted by the Pueblo artists. Representing the woodland tribes, Trading Post Internationale highlights a collection of antler carvings by Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe artist Wayne Valliere. Trading Post Internationale and Trading Post Antiques are both located on Highway B in downtown Land O' Lakes. Trading Post Internationale is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays by chance or by appointment. Trading Post Antiques is open by request from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, or evenings and Sundays by appointment. For further information, call Trading Post Internationale at (715) 547-3525, email tradpost@nnex.net or online at tradingpostintl. com.
