Wild Eagle Lodge on Chain offers all the amenities for family vacation Located in the heart of the North Woods, Wild Eagle Lodge is nestled on 20 acres at the forested edge of the famous Eagle River Chain of 28 Lakes — billed as the world’s largest chain of lakes. John Bradley, who works for JP Morgan Chase in London, invested in Wild Eagle Lodge in early 2012 and was joined by his father, Curt, who retired from the telecommunications business in Europe to join him as manager. Assisting the Bradleys are four assistant resort managers: Lydia Ivey, front desk; Chris Harmann, engineering and maintenance; Deb Karpinski, special events and weddings; and Tammy Madl, sales and marketing. The assistant resort managers provide support and experience to the Bradleys in running the 76-unit condominium re-
sort. Wild Eagle Lodge, built in 2004 and 2005, is located on a peninsula separating Duck and Lynx lakes and is three miles from the heart of Eagle River. Since the Bradleys’ involvement in 2012, numerous changes have taken place at the resort. The whole facility has been resided and painted. Eight new boats were acquired, including six 500 Series South Bay luxury pontoon boats that hold 13 people. “These pontoon boats are very easy to use, are in immaculate condition and are available daily by a quick call to the front desk. They are perfect for a wonderful full-day excursion on the Chain. Two brand new fishing boats with all the bells and whistles also have been acquired for the avid fishermen,” said Curt Bradley. All lodge homes are currently being upgraded with
Wild Eagle Lodge in Eagle River features a beautiful private sand beach, where guests can lounge, swim or enjoy water
painting, new carpeting and new furniture, including mattresses. “Other changes are being made to place the lodge homes in wonderful, like-new condition,” said Bradley. “We want to make you feel that you are in a luxurious setting while ‘roughing it’ in the North Woods. The upgrades have been necessary to meet the resort’s goals of exceeding guest’s expectations.” The one-, two- or threebedroom lodge homes feature a complete kitchen, gas fireplace in the living area, two full-size bathrooms, high-speed Internet, satellite television that includes DVD players and a patio or balcony overlooking the lakes. “You can’t find better access to the Eagle River Chain in the summer, or an easier way to jump on the snowmobile trail right from our resort during the winter season,” said Bradley.
Guests try their luck at fishing at Wild Eagle Lodge located on Duck and Otter lakes in Eagle River.
Geared to the family, Wild Eagle Lodge provides everything necessary for
family vacations, according to Bradley. “Our resort amenities include tennis and basketball courts, a sand volleyball court, a playground area, plus a wonderful inside swimming pool that is for year-round use which includes a children’s wading pool, large whirlpool for up to 13 people, sauna, plus a workout room and massage room,” he said. Paved walkways connect guests to more than 1,900 feet of shoreline. Along the walkways, guests will find numerous fire pits with rustic furniture, barbecues and picnic tables. “The campfire pits are a great place for some family fun and ghost stories right on the lakeshore,” said Bradley. Wild Eagle Lodge also offers family activities and specially designed children’s programs, according to Bradley. “Camp Run-A-Muk is a wonderful and special place for children and fam-
sports. The lodge features one-, two- and three-bedroom lodge homes complete with a kitchen.
ilies in the summer,” he said. “We've partnered with the Northwoods Children’s Museum to bring children and families an exceptional program that will put smiles on their faces from the middle of June through the middle of August.” The resort attracted Chicago natives Dave and Patti Black, renown for Nero’s Restaurant, to create a new restaurant in the former Boondocker’s Lounge building on site. “After extensive remodeling, we now have one of the best restaurants in the North Woods, the Blue Heron Supper Club and Lounge,” said Bradley. “The Blue Heron Supper Club is getting rave reviews for its wonderful meals and superior and friendly service, not to mention the warm and comfortable setting. “We can’t forget Patti and her grand piano, which really takes the restaurant to the top position,” continued Bradley. “It has been a wonderful addition to Wild Eagle Lodge, while still being able to cater to infor-
mal family meals for snowmobilers and summer families. We welcome everyone to try the Blue Heron Supper Club and Lounge.” Wild Eagle Lodge is a popular wedding venue. “Deb Karpinski, an assistant resort manager who manages special events and weddings, treats each bride as if she were her own daughter getting married. Karpinski will exceed each bride’s expectations,” said Bradley. “We are able to create a beautiful shoreline ceremony location for a breathtaking wedding memory. And don’t forget that we also have a wonderful meeting setting and are willing to work with groups to ensure their meeting or event comes off perfectly.” Wild Eagle Lodge is open to the public. The indoor swimming pool offers open swim for $5 per person per day. Wild Eagle Lodge is located at 4443 Chain O’ Lakes Road in Eagle River. Recently, the Small Business Institute/Small Business Administration/UW System conducted anonymous independent surveys of pizza customers of the 11 major pizza restaurants in the Eagle River area. The survey considered quality of food, cleanliness, service and atmosphere. Alexander’s Family Pizza was rated #1! “Out of 11 restaurants mentioned — Alexander’s was ranked number 1,” an independent was second, and a national chain was third, “both far behind in customer choice.” Alexander’s was found to “offer a quality product at a reasonable price. According to the survey, quality has proven to be of more importance to the customer. Alexander’s has excellent pizza. It uses the highest quality ingredients.” Alexander’s Family Pizza wishes to thank all the many people who participated in the surveys. We truly appreciate the fact that our long-term goal of wanting to be known for quality pizza has been realized.

WalkAbout in Eagle River carries canoes, kayaks and standup paddleboards. They host kayak and paddleboard demos
every Saturday in the summer on nearby Silver Lake. No sign-up is necessary.
Outdoor adventures begin at WalkAbout in Eagle River WalkAbout first opened its doors in 2001 and has been outfitting people for their everyday life with a smile ever since. The term walkabout was first used by Australian aborigines, meaning a journey one would take during adulthood to rediscover one’s self. Owners Joy and Kevin Nelson liked the idea of a walkabout and in the process, rediscovered some things about themselves. “We love helping people discover new things every day and when we started WalkAbout, it was similar to our own personal rediscovery. Opening this store made us realize we really love what we do! Whether it be helping people rediscover an old hobby or find the perfect shoes for a new adventure, WalkAbout can help prepare you for your life’s journey!” said Joy Nelson. WalkAbout features several lines of kayaks made in America. The store also carries canoes from Souris River and Mad River. Souris River is available in
Kevlar and Carbon-tec. Mad River is stocked in Royalex and rotomolded plastic. Newly added to WalkAbout’s outdoor equipment are stand-up paddleboards. Designed for recreation and exercise, paddleboarding is an activity suitable for all members of the family. “We’ve really seen a huge response to the Pau Hana paddleboards and people are loving the new styles. They are visually stunning and perform beautifully on the water as well. It is really a sport the whole family can enjoy,” said Joy Nelson. WalkAbout hosts kayak and paddleboard demos every Saturday in the summer from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Silver Lake Beach, no sign-up necessary. Any interested parties wanting details can stop by the store or call for more information. Canoes, kayaks and paddleboards aren’t the only outdoor items people will find for their time on the water. The store offers a se-
lection of life jackets and swimsuits for family members who want to take a dip. Sizes are available for adults, children and even the family dog. Accessories for water activities and camping can also be found at WalkAbout. The store has paddling accessories such as gloves, grips and seats that can make your water experience more enjoyable. WalkAbout also has camping supplies such as dishes, fuel, sleeping bags, bear bells, and many other items to help customers brave the great outdoors. WalkAbout has expanded its selection of children’s books and resource guides essential to a safe and successful outdoor experience. Book topics range from camping recipes and outdoor guides to maps and day trip guides. Kids can also pick up some new books about camping, fishing, outdoor activities, and the ever-popular “Good Night Wisconsin.” WalkAbout offers a large selection of Keen, Merrell,
Chaco, Teva, UGG, Dansko, Jambu, OTBT and Born shoes. Ranging from fashion to performance hiking and water shoes, there is something for every shoe lover. Smartwool socks are available in all different styles and colors, both technical and fashionable. The store also offers children’s shoes including Keen, Reef and Dansko. Those with a sense of style will find that WalkAbout offers a perfect combination of fashionable and functional clothing for men and women. Brands include Patagonia, Mountain Hardwear, Royal Robbins, Horny Toad, Woolrich, Ex Officio and Life Is Good. Women’s clothing lines include Lole, Roxy, Nic and Zoe, Spanx and Nomadic Traders. WalkAbout Paddle & Apparel is located at 622 E. Wall St. in downtown Eagle River. Summer hours for the store are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Racers slip and slid around the popular slick track at Kartway in Eagle River. The surface of the track is slippery, adding
challenge and thrill for drivers. The facility also has a go-cart track, mini golf and horse rides.
For family fun on vacation, visit Kartway, Rocking W Thrills of every kind can be found at Kartway theme park in Eagle River. With numerous go-cart tracks, bumper boats, water balloon catapults, mini golf, miniature jeeps and many other activities, families will never get bored. The traditional road gocart track is the most popular attraction. “When this place was just started, about 30 years ago, the go-carts were the only ride and it was just a circle track,” said owner Dean Nolan. That original track has grown to 850 feet and now features bridges, hairpin turns and long straightaways for your racing pleasure. For the children who can’t quite reach the pedals, Kartway offers double carts so that a parent can drive. For those who love speed, Kartway has the faster NasKarts. These cars are styled after sprint car racing machines and allow drivers to open the throttle and speed through banked corners. If the first two courses are not enough of a thrill, Kartway has a slick track covered in wax and baby powder to test your driving skills. Slide around the corners on this eight-car track and leave your friends in the

dust. Even the youngest drivers can drive at Kartway. The kiddie track allows small children to race around the pavement on miniature jeeps and fourwheelers. Motorized bumper boats allow riders to splash around and bump each other until everyone is soaked. Drivers also can team up and push less-fortunate riders into the fountain located in the middle of the pool. Everyone is sure to be drenched after this ride. For a glorified water-balloon fight, check out Water Wars! In this game, two people are given a bucket of water balloons. Each person goes to their respective area and loads the balloons into a slingshot to send them flying to soak their opponent.
If you want to test your skills on the putting green, Kartway has an 18-hole miniature golf course. Challenging for all ages, players will have to avoid water hazards and obstacles in order to defeat their opponent. Kartway also serves candy, chips, soda and water available at the concession stand. Picnic areas also are available. Kartway’s well-trained staff operate and supervise the rides in order to avoid any accidents. Nolan said the staff members aged 16 and older control the adult rides and those younger than 16 are responsible for the kiddie rides. Tickets for the go-carts, slick track, NasKart, bumper boats and golf are $5 each. For children age 5 and younger, golf is free. A
six-pack of tickets can be purchased for $30 with the seventh free. Tickets for the kiddie karts and Water Wars! are available for $2 each. A six pack of tickets for these activities can be purchased for $12 with a seventh free ticket. Kartway is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Special group rates are offered for parties, however, credit cards are not accepted. Visitors also can enjoy Rocking W Stables, located right next to Kartway. Riders of any skill level can partake in a 45- to 50-minute 3mile guided trail ride through the North Woods. Guests ages 6 and older can ride solo for $20, or for $25 visitors can ride double on a horse to accommodate riders age 5 and younger. Pony rides also are available for $5. Rocking W Stables is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Horse-drawn wagon rides are provided at Hi-Pines Campground every Friday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. No reservations are needed. Kartway and Rocking W Stables are located 1 mile north of Eagle River at 1890 Morley Road, near the intersection of highways 45 and G. For more information, call Kartway at (715) 479-4450 or Rocking W Stables at (715) 617-6779.

Annual Shoot-out, Fly-in set in Three Lakes June 22 The screaming sounds of hydroplanes and performance racing boats flying across the water at speeds approaching 100 mph will once again be back on Big Stone Lake Saturday, June 22, as part of the sixth annual Three Lakes ShootOut and Fly-In. The 1,000-foot radar run is slated to draw jet, tunnel and drag-racing boats from across the Midwest and from as far away as Canada, for the daylong fundraising event for the Three Lakes Fire Department. Adding to the racing excitement will be snowmobiles running on the water, some pulling barefoot water-skiers. The fly-in portion of the event will include displays of vintage airplanes, biplanes and war birds at the nearby Three Lakes airport. With headquarters at Sunset Grill & C-Store and Anchor Marine & Storage on Big Stone Lake, three miles east of Three Lakes on Highway 32, the fundraiser will include music, food and beverages. Action will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and will continue all afternoon. Admission and parking will be free. Bleacher seating is available lakeside. Spectators are welcome to get a closer look at the racing action by anchoring their boats along the racecourse. Now in its sixth year, the shoot-out and fly-in keeps getting bigger, with entries vying for top-gun honors in classes which include highperformance tunnel boats,
