Benson Builders enhances customer services with new model home and design center Benson Builders in Land O’ Lakes has developed a reputation for building landmark homes throughout the North Woods. Now, a new model home and design center will build on that stature. Recently, the Small Business Institute/Small Business Administration/UW System conducted anonymous independent surveys of pizza customers of the 11 major pizza restaurants in the Eagle River area. The survey considered quality of food, cleanliness, service and atmosphere. Concerts in Park set in Three Lakes The Three Lakes Historical Society has announced the artists for its 2013 Summer Concerts in the Park series, which is set to begin Tuesday, June 25, and will continue through Aug. 6. The concerts will take place Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. at the Cy Williams Park gazebo, which is located behind the Three Lakes Chamber of Commerce building on Superior Street. The concerts are

free, although donations for the society are welcome. Popcorn, soda, water and cider will be available for purchase. All proceeds benefit the Three Lakes Historical Society and Museum. Attendees can take along blankets, chairs and even a picnic for a relaxing summer evening of music in the park. Communities across the North Woods will celebrate Independence Day with parades, picnics and fireworks. The following is a rundown of celebrations planned for Independence Day. While most events will be July 4, a few communities have selected other days for their festivities. A special fireworks display will be held in Land O’ Lakes Wednesday, July 3. People should call local chambers of commerce to confirm dates and times of parades and fireworks. Three Lakes — The Three Lakes Lions Club will kick off the town’s celebration with a pancake breakfast Thursday, July 4, at 7 a.m. in the Three Lakes School cafeteria, followed by a parade through downtown at 9 a.m. There will be activities in Don Burnside Recreation Park following the parade. Fireworks will be held at the park at dusk. Eagle River — The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center will host its annual Fourth of July parade down Wall Street at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 4. Fireworks are planned at Hi-Pines Campground north of Eagle

River at dusk. Land O’ Lakes — There will be fireworks at the airport at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, billed as “the best fireworks display in the North Woods.” A parade through downtown will be held at noon Thursday, July 4. There will be a picnic at Memorial Park starting at 1 p.m. with games, food, refreshments and live music. Conover — The Conover celebration will begin Thursday, July 4, with a parade planned for 1 p.m. traveling down Town Road to the park on East Highway K, where the Lions Club will host a picnic throughout the afternoon. Phelps — The community will have a parade at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 4. After the parade, there will be live music, carnival games, inflatables, and beer downtown, followed by fireworks at dusk over North Twin Lake. Sayner — The SaynerStar Lake area will celebrate Independence Day with a downtown parade Thursday, July 4, at 3 p.m., coordinated by the chamber. There also will be food, games and a trout pond in the park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Festivities also will in-

clude the Firemen’s Barbecue from noon to 5 p.m. There will be a Plum Lake Ski-ters water-ski show on Plum Lake at 7 p.m. followed by fireworks at dusk. Minocqua — A full day of activities Thursday, July 4, will include old-fashioned family games from noon to 2 p.m. in the park, a downtown parade at 4 p.m., a concert in the park at 5:30 p.m., waterski show at 7 p.m. at the Aqua Bowl and fireworks over Lake Minocqua at dusk. Boulder Junction — Activities Thursday, July 4, will highlight Wisconsin’s heritage, as the theme of this year’s parade will be “Celebrating Wisconsin’s Heritage.” Festivities will begin at noon with a Legion Post 451 gun salute at Veterans Memorial Triangle, followed by the parade. A fireworks display is set at dusk at the airport. Manitowish Waters — The chamber of commerce will sponsor activities Thursday, July 4, at the Manitowish Waters Community Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., including arts and crafts, Lioness Club bake sale, live music, raffles, information booths, game tent, food and beverages, and an

airplane display and rides. There will be a parade at 1 p.m. along Highway W, a water-ski show at Rest Lake Park at 7 p.m. and fireworks at the airport at 9:45 p.m. Lac du Flambeau — The celebration Thursday, July 4, will include food and crafts vendors downtown from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and souvenir items available at the chamber booth. There will be a parade at noon, followed by a pow-wow at the Indian Bowl at 6:30 p.m. and fireworks at dusk. Presque Isle — The celebration Thursday, July 4, will include a bike-andbuggy parade held on Main Street at 6:30 p.m. Winegar American Legion Post 480 will serve food at 4 p.m. There will be fireworks at dusk in the downtown area. Winchester — The chamber of commerce will sponsor a picnic in the park Thursday, July 4, from noon to 5 p.m. with raffles, food, games, music, volleyball and the famous bobber race. Lake Tomahawk — The Lions Club will present its annual Fourth of July parade in the afternoon. There will be snowshoe baseball after the parade and fireworks at dusk. Food and beverages will be available.

Midnight Moonshine 5K set in Eagle River July 6 The Eagle River YMCA will hold its fourth annual Midnight Moonshine fivekilometer (5K) run Saturday, July 6, which will begin and end at the intersection of Wall and Railroad streets in downtown Eagle River. Race day registration will begin at 9:30 p.m. with the race set to start at midnight. Entertainment will begin at 10 p.m. The race route will travel

through town past Yellow Birch Lake. This is one of two fundraisers for the Eagle River YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign, which provides scholarships for families to participate in Y programs. Owner Rob “Big Rob” Andersen prides himself on having a family-friendly restaurant. “It’s a family restaurant and a supper club — a little bit of everything with the addition of the new dinner salad,” said Big Rob. The interior of the restaurant has been brightened by the addition of large windows, according to Andersen. The restaurant has two dining rooms. The parking lot also has been enlarged. But even with a new look, Loose Moose continues to serve favorites like barbecued ribs — formerly the house specialty at Tia Juana. Diners can choose from chewy or fall-off-thebone ribs which are lightly smoked and seasoned with Big Rob’s own homemade BBQ sauce. Few restaurants offer an all-you-can-eat fish fry every night, but Loose

Moose is an exception. The nightly fish fry includes soup or salad, choice of potato and rye bread along with baked beans and coleslaw. The restaurant also offers an all-you-caneat shrimp boil. Potato choices include Moose fries, Boston wedges, baked potato or garlic mashed; vegetables or rice also are offered as sides. Diners can choose walleye, panfish or poor man’s lobster as their entrée of choice. All are served with soup, salad and choice of potato. Also available is roast duck on a bed of rice blend served with Rose’s black cherry and burgundy sauce. This entrée comes with soup and salad. Loose Moose offers a large array of deluxe sandwiches and appetizing basket meals, such as the barbecued pulled-pork sandwich, grilled chicken sandwich, black angus hamburgers, coconut shrimp, deluxe butterfly shrimp, chicken strips and reubens. All come with coleslaw, baked beans and choice of potato. For those with a hearty

appetite, try Loose Moose’s all-you-can-eat meals or moose-cut meals. Diners looking for prime rib Saturday can choose between a 16-ounce cut or 24ounce moose cut of savory prime rib served with choice of potato, soup and salad. Loose Moose also offers a 16-ounce or 24-ounce moose-cut rib eye, along with its recent addition of an 8-ounce portion of filet. All are served with choice of potato, soup and salad. A great array of appetizers and desserts for two are available, as well as a selection of vegetarian meals. Loose Moose offers a children’s menu which includes meals for youths younger than 10. It includes chicken strips, hot dogs, fish fry and hamburgers. These meals also include Moose fries, a drink and pudding. Also added to the children’s menu are macaroni and cheese and a personalsize cheese pizza. Both include applesauce, a drink and pudding. Loose Moose has a full bar and an impressive wine collection. On tap are 10 domestic and import beers to

choose from, including Hacker-Pschorr. Patrons of all ages can enjoy the arcade room across from the bar and can view Big Rob’s collection of mounted animals in the dining room adjacent to the bar, which includes a bear, a moose head and an albino deer. Historic White Spruce offers lunch, dinner menu Conveniently located just north of the bridge in Eagle River, Eddie B’s White Spruce Restaurant and Tavern offers great food and an authentic North Woods dining experience. Dating back to the 1800s, the restaurant is the oldest building in Eagle River and has preserved its historic charm. The interior is cozy and rustic, complete with log structures and accents. “We work hard to provide great food and friendly service,” said owner, Ed Blankenship. Another special feature of the White Spruce is that it sits right on the river and is accessible from the Eagle River Chain. There are plenty of windows in the dining room and bar that offer a scenic view of the river. The White Spruce also has boat slips, providing space for up to twelve boats to dock up for refreshment after a cruise on the chain. In addition to their indoor seating, they also have a spacious outdoor deck. The

riverside deck, where they serve the lunch menu and drinks, has plenty of tables. There is also an outdoor tiki bar that is planned to open later in the summer. Guests can sit outside and have a drink or lunch while enjoying the gentle breeze and taking advantage of the river view. Kids fishing tips set at Hi-Pines Free fishing seminars for children between the ages of 5 and 13 will be held at HiPines Campground in Eagle River at 6:30 p.m. each Tuesday from June 18 through Aug. 13. All children will be given information about fishing and prizes at the free seminars. Prizes may include a rod and reel, tackle box, lures and other items. There will be hands-on instruction on fish identification, size limits, licenses, rigging slip bobbers, tying knots, fish habitat, netting and handling fish, catch and release, boating safety, cast-

Experience North Woods history at Vilas County Historical Museum Visitors and residents curious about Vilas County’s past can find answers at the historical museum in Sayner. An independent nonprofit facility funded entirely by donations, memberships and memorials, the Vilas County Historical Museum is home to more than 48,000 memorabilia items. History-seeking guests have been visiting the museum for more than 50 years. Doors were opened Aug. 16, 1959, and have remained open every season since. The extensive collection of the museum features everything from area wildlife to furniture and clothing. The museum hosts an array of military items including uniforms, medals

and memorabilia, and a World War I Cavalry hat. It also has an assortment of Civilian Conservation Corps photographs. A large display of antique dolls, including Little Red Riding Hood, Shirley Temple, characters from “The Wizard of Oz” and Mary Poppins dolls, as well as a variety of bridal dolls, are just part of the compilation that can be found. There also is a Queen Elizabeth II doll which was created for the queen’s coronation. A popular attraction of the museum is the collection of snowmobiles, which showcases the world’s first snowmobile. The animal and bird room features a large collection of African animals col-

lected by the late Jim Froelich, a big-game hunter from the Sayner area. A zebra, wildebeest, springbok and warthog are just a few animal mounts on display. The museum gift shop offers books and flyers on the North Woods and also features books by North Woods authors. Postcards, T-shirts and replicas of early toys and items found in the museum are available for purchase. The museum will hold its annual chicken dinner Saturday, Aug. 10, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Sayner Community Building and pavilion. Tickets for this dinner go on sale July 10. Each ticket costs $10. For family fun, visit Kartway, Rocking W Thrills of every kind can be found at Kartway theme park in Eagle River. With numerous go-cart tracks, bumper boats, water balloon catapults, mini golf, miniature jeeps and many other activities, families will never get bored. The traditional road gocart track is the most popular attraction. “When this place was just started, about 30 years ago, the go-carts were the only ride and it was just a circle track,” said owner Dean Nolan. That original track has grown to 850 feet and now features bridges, hairpin turns and long straightaways for your racing pleasure. For children who can’t quite reach the pedals, Kartway offers double carts so that a parent can drive. For those who love speed, Kartway has the faster NasKarts. These cars are styled after sprint car

racing machines and allow drivers to open the throttle and speed through banked corners. If the first two courses are not enough of a thrill, Kartway has a slick track covered in wax and baby powder to test your driving skills. Slide around the corners on this eightcar track and leave your friends in the dust. Even the youngest drivers can drive at Kartway. The kiddie track allows small children to race around the pavement on miniature jeeps and fourwheelers. Motorized bumper boats allow riders to splash around and bump each other until everyone is soaked. Drivers also can team up and push less-fortunate riders into the fountain located in the middle of the pool. Everyone is sure to be drenched after this ride. For a glorified water-balloon fight, check out Water Wars! In this game, two

people are given a bucket of water balloons. Each person goes to their respective area and loads the balloons into a slingshot to send them flying to soak their opponent. If you want to test your skills on the putting green, Kartway has an 18-hole miniature golf course. Challenging for all ages, players will have to avoid water hazards and obstacles in order to defeat their opponent. Kartway also serves candy, chips, soda and water available at the concession stand. Picnic areas also are available. Kartway’s well-trained staff operate and supervise the rides in order to avoid any accidents. Nolan said the staff members aged 16 and older control the adult rides and those younger than 16 are responsible for the kiddie rides. Cathy’s ice cream remains a summer favorite For a tasty treat that will cure any sweet tooth, stop into Cathy’s Ice Cream and Candy Shoppe in St. Germain. Cathy Clark started the business over 25 years ago and it has been a fixture in the community ever since. Leslie and Mark Hiller took over 2 years ago and haven’t changed a thing. Cathy remains a part of the business by advising and mentoring. Cathy’s is a classic ice cream parlor serving up all sorts of sweet treats. It is a clean friendly place where large groups can gather to enjoy something as simple as ice cream. “Great grandparents to great grandkids come in together as part their summer tradition. Cathy’s is a big part of their vacation and it’s fun to see,” said Leslie. The shop boasts 36 flavors and features a new flavor every month. Popular flavors include Mint Chocolate Chip, Blue Moon and Java Chunk. Visitors can enjoy their ice cream in one of Cathy’s hand-dipped chocolate waffle cones. New this summer, they added sorbet to their selection. With a growing number of people with food allergies, Cathy’s is being more conscious. In addition to offering the dairy-free sorbet they are also carrying frozen yogurt and no-sugar-added ice cream. Allergen lists are available at the counter. The shop offers ice cream creations such as shakes,

malts, black cows, floats, dirt cups and classic banana splits. Handmade custom ice cream cakes are also available by special order only. In addition to their ice cream, they also carry specialty and novelty candy such as salt-water taffy, giant lollipops, fruit-striped bubble gum, fudge, gourmet truffles and more. “You’ll find the stuff you had as a kid, plus all the new fun, crazy stuff,” said Leslie Hiller. Fire, EMS breakfast planned in Conover The Conover Volunteer Fire & Rescue, and emergency medical services (EMS) departments will host the 29th annual blueberry pancake breakfast Sunday, July 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Held at the Conover Community Center, the event will feature all-youcan-eat pancakes, sausages, rolls, coffee and
