Outdoor adventures begin at WalkAbout WalkAbout first opened its doors in 2001 and has been outfitting people for their everyday life with a smile ever since. The term walkabout was first used by Australian aborigines, meaning a journey one would take during adulthood to rediscover one’s self. Owners Joy and Kevin Nelson liked the idea of a walkabout and in the process, rediscovered some things about themselves. “We love helping people discover new things every day and when we started WalkAbout, it was similar to our own personal rediscovery. Opening this store made us realize we really love what we do! Whether it be helping people rediscover an old hobby or find the perfect shoes for a new adventure, WalkAbout can help prepare you for your life’s journey,” said Joy Nelson. Music on Main series set in Boulder Junction The Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce has announced the lineup for the sixth season of its summer music series, Music on Main Street, set Wednesday evenings through July 31. What makes a great-tasting pizza every time? What makes a great pizza? Tradition. The old ways still work, and all good cooking starts with the basics. Quality food starts with the ingredients. Kids fishing tips offered Free fishing seminars for children between the ages of 5 and 13 will be held at HiPines Campground in Eagle River at 6:30 p.m. each Tuesday from June 18 through Aug. 13. All children will be given information about fishing and prizes at the free seminars. Prizes may include a rod and reel, tackle box, lures and other items. There will be hands-on instruction on fish identification, size limits, licenses, rigging slip bobbers, tying knots, fish habitat, netting and handling fish, catch and release, boating safety, cast-

ing techniques and preventing aquatic invasive species. The seminars are sponsored by the Headwaters Chapter of Muskies Inc., headquartered in Eagle River. Boulder Junction plans blues festival The Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce announced it will host Blues Breakdown, a music festival Saturday, July 13 at the Boulder Junction Baseball Park on Highway M. Doors open at 11 a.m., rain or shine. The festival features performances from The Lately at noon, The Tallan Noble Latz Band at 2 p.m., Aaron Williams and the Hoodoo at 4 p.m., The Sena Ehrhardt Band at 6 p.m., and The Nick Moss Band at 8 p.m. Tallan Noble Latz was named by the Wisconsin Area Music Industry its 2010 Rising Star of the Year award recipient. Aaron Williams and the

Hoodoo were nominated for a Grammy for Blues Album of the Year in 2011, named Blues Artist of the Year 2012 by the Wisconsin Area Music Industry, named Blues Artist of the Year in 2010, 2011 and 2012 by Madison Area Music Association and Blues/Rock Album of the Year by Real Blues Magazine. Sena Ehrhardt was nominated for 2012 Blues Music Awards-Best New Artist Debut by the Blues Foundation. Nick Moss’s album, “Sadie Mae,” was nominated for 2006 Blues Music Awards as Album of the Year and Traditional Blues Album of the Year.

Lions plan Steak in the Park Bill Hassey and his orchestra featuring Skip Wagner will perform at the 17th annual Phelps Lions Club Steak in the Park event Wednesday, July 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Wavering Park rain or shine. Hassey has had a band for 55 years mainly in the Milwaukee area. He restarted the band four years ago. Beauty, challenging holes found at Eagle River course Eagle River Golf Course is famous for its playing conditions, challenging layout and North Woods beauty. It is open to the public for everyone to enjoy. When golfers play at Eagle River Golf Course, they often are playing on the best course conditions available in the North Woods. “Many of our customers rave every year about the overall playing conditions they experience at our facility. We take pride in giving the golfers a playing surface that is consistent with our four-star rating we receive every year from Golf Digest’s Best Places to Play,” said Howard Manske, the club’s PGA golf professional. Golf Digest has given the course a four-star rating 10 years in a row. The customers playing the course are the people responsible for the rating the course receives. “This rating reflects the value and awesome experience of playing at the Eagle River Golf Course,” said Manske. The course offers some of the most affordable rates of any four-star rated golf course in the North Woods. Players can rest assured they are getting great value. Undulating greens and narrow fairways keep the course challenging. The practice area represents what customers should expect from a course with a four-star rating. A new putting and chipping green was built five years ago, a huge improvement for those who wish to practice all aspects of their short game. For golfers to practice their greenside sand game, a practice greenside bunker is featured. The practice area features a new practice tee. Many of the course’s holes are carved out of mature trees, reminding visitors why they love to golf in the North Woods area. The abundance of wildlife is another unique characteristic of the course. Festival of Flavors set at Riverview Park The North Woods’ premier food event, the Eagle River Area Festival of Flavors, is set for Saturday, July 13, in Riverview Park near downtown Eagle River. The Eagle River Area Festival of Flavors, named “Best Downtown Special Event” by the Wisconsin Department of Commerce, attracts some of Wisconsin’s pride-and-joy businesses, according to event coordinator Cindy Meinholz. The huge 200- by 60-foot Celebrate the Taste of Wisconsin tent will showcase foods and beverages of the Badger State. Attendees can sample champion cheeses, gold award-winning wines, prized Wisconsin meats, along with features from many Vilas County restaurants. Something Special From Wisconsin companies will offer samples and sell their foods, while Sprecher Brewing Co. will provide samples of all their beers and sodas. The Discover Wisconsin Theatre stage will host in-

teractive events such as cooking demonstrations by chefs Raymond Arpke and Cyndy Lagerhausen. Arpke was a finalist on ABC Nightline’s “Plate List . . . in Search of Great Chefs in America.” Lagerhausen is a nationally-recognized food stylist and owner of Food Style Cooking Classes in Eagle River. Other events scheduled during the 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. festival will be the Sprecher Root Beer Float Drinking Contest at 2 p.m. and the Kids’ Kreative Kakes Kontest sponsored by Trig’s and Soda Pops Restaurant, open to contestants ages 5-8. Outside the Taste of Wisconsin tent and available without admission is Wisconsin Street Food Row and Sprecher Wisconsin Beverage Garden. Everyone is invited to listen to live music by the Hand-Picked Bluegrass Band. For the hungry festival goers, Street Food Row offers foods that include Brakebush chicken tacos, Nueske’s smoked weiners,

Tribute Brewing Co. introduces new beers with ‘tribute’ names Just a few months ago, Tribute Brewing Co. released their first beer to the public at the taphouse on Bluebird Road in Eagle River. Since then, they have introduced many different beer styles with another beer, a summer seasonal called Summer Kamp Kolsch, ready to release this month. Tribute names their beers as a tribute to local historic people, places and things. You’ll find 28 Lake Lager named after the Cain of Lakes, Blueberry Train Wheat named after a train that carried blueberries from Conover to Chicago, Barefoot Charlie IPA in honor of a local character who built a historic bar, Ghost Lights Amber Lager named for the unexplained lights in Paulding, Mich., and Old Eagle Chocolate Porter in honor of the first steamboat to navigate the Eagle River.

Co-owner and brewmaster Marc O’Brien has been busy keeping up with the demand, but it’s not all just brewing the beer when it comes to producing a quality product. “Fresh, quality ingredients are key in the brewing industry,” O’Brien said. “Sourcing from regional companies is our preference to ensure the freshest products.” According to co-owner Bill Summers, O’Brien has been perfecting his recipes for the last 16 years as a homebrewer and seems to have made the transition to a professional brewer. “Marc is brewing some great beer in a variety of styles, which is not easy to do,” says Summers. “From the Blueberry Train Wheat to the Old Eagle Chocolate Porter, his beers have been spot on.” Tribute is just beginning to distribute their beers to

local bars and restaurants. As a small start-up brewery, Tribute has a limited amount of kegs to go around and is setting up accounts on a first-come, first-served basis. “The response from the community and area businesses has been great,” said Summers. You’ll find Tribute Brewing Co. beers on tap locally at O’Brien’s Pub and the Eagle River Country Club, Club 45 in Conover, Buckatabon Lodge in Conover, Vinchi’s Hillside Inn in Sayner, Aqualand Alehouse in Boulder Junction and the Tribute Golf Course in Wausau. Summers expects more bars will begin to want a locally brewed beer to offer to their customers. In addition to being served on tap, their beer can be purchased in half-gallon glass jugs called growlers. “It’s a reusable packaging option that most all craft

breweries use,” said Summers. “It contains four pint servings of our beer and when it’s empty, you can return it in exchange for a full one. That way you’re only paying for the beer the second time, not the packaging.” Summers says that growlers are available at the taphouse as well as Paul’s Pump and Pantry in Eagle River, Trig’s Cellar 70 locations in Eagle River, Rhinelander and Minocqua, and at Stein’s Lincoln Street Liquor in Rhinelander. The Tribute Brewing Co. Taphouse is located on Bluebird Road just off of Airport Road in Eagle River. They don’t serve food but you can have pizza delivered there and they do allow carry-ins. Concerts in the Park slated in Three Lakes The Three Lakes Historical Society has announced the artists for its 2013 Summer Concerts in the Park series, which will continue through Aug. 6. Guides/Kids Day slated in Eagle River July 11 The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center, in conjunction with the Eagle River Guides Association, will host its 33rd annual Guides/Kids Day Thursday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “Approximately 100 kids will be anxiously awaiting a chance to fish with a fishing guide or fishing enthusiast,” said Eagle River Chamber of Commerce Events Coordinator Kim Emerson. The event will be held at the Vilas County Fairgrounds for youths ages 7 to 12. Activities will include a casting contest, fishing seminars and fishing with a guide on an area lake.

Antique show set July 12-13 Dealers from several states will participate in an antique show at the Boulder Junction Community Center on Highway M Friday and Saturday, July 1213. The show hours will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Admission for the event will be $5 per person. Youths 14 and younger will receive free admission. There also will be a luncheon and book sale sponsored by the Boulder Junction Lioness Club.

Parents and guardians can register youths from 10 to 11 a.m. at the fairgrounds on Highway 70 West in Eagle River. Youths may take their own fishing gear and life preservers. Other gear will be provided by the guides and area bait shops will provide the bait. At 11 a.m., children will be selected to fish with a guide on an area lake. Parents are asked to stay with their children until after the drawing to fish with a guide. Children can be picked up at the fairgrounds at 3 p.m. Emerson said the chamber is always looking for a few extra anglers to volunteer as guides to fish with

Island Art Walk set in Minocqua Lakeland Art League Inc. and Lakeland Area Kiwanis Club will hold the Island Art Walk Saturday, July 13, from 9 a.m. to 3

p.m. at Torpy Park and in the Campanile Center in Minocqua. The 38th annual art fair event had changed its location and has gained the support of two local businesses as supporting sponsors of this year’s event. The art fair event will have the outdoor portion of the show at Torpy Park, which will include more than 45 crafter and artist booths on the park’s upper level under the trees across from the pavilion. Visitors may continue along a two-block path following the sidewalk with stops at Loon Land Trading Co. and Twisted Root Emporium and Park Side Gallery. Visitors will continue down Flambeau Street to the Campanile Center for the indoor event, which will display unique individual

pieces of fine art and fine crafts. This two-location event creates a fun walk between the events while also visiting these art centers along the way in part of the downtown atmosphere of the Island City of Minocqua. The Campanile indoor art show will be a center for artists creating fine art and craft pieces which can be displayed individually without the weather affecting the art. The Art League will be available at this part of the show to assist visitors, sell raffle tickets for some of the art and facilitate the sale of the displayed art. As a fine art and craft show, the public can vote on their favorite piece with ribbons and prizes being awarded to the top three art pieces.

Ed “Spang” Reid and his wife, Rosie, moved up north from Chicago in 1972 and that summer they started Spang’s Italian Restaurant. In 1988 their son and his wife, Joe and Debbie Reid, took over and Spang’s is now in its 41st year of business. Joe and Debbie’s son, Joe Reid Jr., work as the kitchen manager and the main chef. “It truly is a family affair,” said Debbie. Last year, under new ownership the restaurant underwent an interior renovation and a completely new menu with different recipes was implemented. Now, the Reid family is thrilled to be back in business at Spang’s and continue their 40-year tradition of delicious Italian food, a charming, cozy atmosphere and the best pizza north of Chicago. The interior renovations remain the same, but the menu and recipes have been changed back to feature the original Italian entrees that have been favorites of diners for years. Spang’s is open daily for dinner and features dishes such as homemade ravioli,

eggplant Parmigiana, seafood Alfredo, homemade chicken Kiev and more. All entrees come with a choice of soup or salad, antipasto plate, Joe’s homemade bread and a choice of side dishes to accompany the entrees. The menu also features a selection of appetizers such as bruschetta, calamari and antipasto. A variety of sandwiches including the Roast Beef Bomber and Spang’s sausage and beef combo also can be found. A new smoked trout salad has been added to their selection of salads. Smoked salmon tops a bed of fresh spinach, wild rice, green onion, red lettuce, romaine, cheddar cheese and is sprinkled with slivered almonds and served with a creamy horseradish dressing. Diners can finish off their meal with something sweet from the dessert menu such as tiramisu, cannoli and amaretto spumoni cheesecake. Spang’s also offers a children’s menu. When it comes to pizzerias in the North Woods, one of the most popular stops for traditional homemade pizza is Alexan-

der’s Pizza in Eagle River. The pizzeria also has an assortment of arcade games, pool and pinball.

Alexander’s Pizza in Eagle River brings tradition to your table More than 38 years ago, two brothers came to the North Woods seeking summer jobs. Rooted in a strong Italian community in Chicago, pizza was the staple at home and at college. Seeing a lack of pizzerias in the area, the brothers realized a great opportunity existed and opened their own pizzeria in Eagle River. Sources say the locals at the time looked down on them and called them brash boys from “Chi-town.” Today, the pizzeria has become a landmark. Customers come from all over the country to taste the best pizza in the area. Even celebrities have visited Alexander’s on occasion, including professional football players; head coaches from the NFL, NBA and NCAA; hockey players; movie stars; movie critics; national sports commentators; leaders of U.S. industries; newscasters; and authors. A visiting film critic even gave Alexander’s a

“thumbs up.” Although the business opened many years ago, one thing remains the same — the traditional method of making pizza at Alexander’s. The pizza is made the way Grandma Del Cristo said: use the best to make the best. The ingredients used are only the finest, which the owners ensure. The cheese used is 100% full-cream mozzarella, which is straight from the most award-winning dairy in Wisconsin, along with ninemonth-aged Romano. The soul of a pizza is the crust, which is made with high-gluten flour. Adding flavor to the pizza is the thick, rich sauce created from tomato purée from pear tomatoes — the meatiest of tomatoes. The meat also is very lean, at 90%, with no soy fillers. For the more adventurous pizza connoisseurs, Alexander’s offers broccoli,

shrimp, albacore and pineapple to create original gourmet pizzas. Diners also can try a delicious oven-roasted cheese bread appetizer — one-half loaf of freshly baked French bread, basted with butter, seasoned with garlic and aged Romano, covered with mozzarella, roasted to a honey-golden brown and lightly sprinkled with oregano. As one would say in Italian, “Qui si mangia sempre bene!” (Here one always eats well!) Alexander’s success is due to the quality put into each pizza. The dough is homemade and tripleraised while the crusts are rolled with care. The delicious taste of fresh butter is found in every bite of crust as well. Pizza is not the only item on the menu made with care and dedication. Savory sandwiches are made to order with toasted French bread, creamy mozzarella,

California tomato sauce and your choice of ham, Italian sausage or meatballs, and any of your favorite pizza toppings. Alexander’s has a full assortment of arcade games, such as pinball, video games and several pool and foosball tables. It’s a great place to host birthday parties. Visit Lake Forest for golf tradition, recreation Lake Forest Golf Club has a rich tradition of providing challenging holes, friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere to vacationers and local residents. The beautiful North Woods scenery of the historical course makes it a wonderful place to enhance your summer fun. “You can come by land or by water,” club manager Rick “Pepper” Freund said, referring to the course’s location on the Chain of Lakes. The course can be accessed by boat on the channel between Voyageur and Eagle lakes. Guests are welcome to stop by for a game of golf or enjoy food and drinks at the clubhouse. The romantic history of golf at Lake Forest dates back more than 75 years. In 1917, a small group of wealthy “regulars” selected a wooded and hilly farm site with frontage on two lakes and established what was called Eagle Waters

Golf Club. They carved a nine-hole golf course from the wooded hills and built a clubhouse. Eagle Waters Golf Club was private and catered to the elite group of cottage owners in the Everett Colony between Catfish and Cranberry lakes. Through the years, the golf club has entertained the rich and famous. On some days, as many as 100 caddies served the club and its members. While the rest of the country struggled through the Great Depression, the driveways of local estates sported Fleetwoods, Rolls Royces and Cords. Bets of $1,000 per hole were not unusual. Many famous golfers played the course — Walter Hogan, Ollie Meyers and José Hurado, the South American golf champion. In the 1950s, President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his brother, Milton, were frequent visitors.

Today, Lake Forest Resort offers golf, tennis, a fitness center and nature trails to guests and the public. The nine-hole golf course winds through the hilly greens and provides tee times daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. This fully irrigated, par-36 golf course is 3,000 yards long. Amenities at the golf course include a clubhouse, pro shop, practice green, gas carts and push carts, rental clubs, and seasonal memberships. There also are weekly specials on merchandise at the pro shop. Golf specials include early bird 9 holes, 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. daily for $15, twilight 9 holes after 2 p.m. daily for $15 and super twilight 9 holes after 6 p.m. daily for $12. Seniors can receive discounted greens fees seven days a week. Other specials include Sweetheart days Saturdays and Sundays, when couples can play for $26 after 2 p.m.

Lake Forest also offers individual 10-play passes. The pass costs $150 for 10 nine-hole rounds and the 11th game is free. The clubhouse serves a full menu of sandwiches, brats, burgers and deepfried appetizers, starting at 11 a.m. Deck and dance parties are held every Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m., featuring live entertainment, weather permitting. The bartenders can make your favorite drinks, including their famous

menu and bar starting at 11 a.m. Lake Forest also has tennis, nature trails and a fitness center.

Bloody Marys. Food and beverages must be ordered at the bar, but guests are welcome to sit at the tables outside or in the clubhouse. If golfers would like more information about golfing at Lake Forest they can call (715) 479-4211. In addition to the golf course, Lake Forest Recreation Area has a health and fitness center which is open to the public. Memberships are available at the fitness center.
