Visitors can choose from a wide variety of annuals, vegetable, perennials, shrubbery, shade trees, evergreens, grasses and more. The garden center also features a large selection of outdoor decor including wind chimes, bird baths, outdoor furniture, lanterns and more. Landscaping services offered include irrigation systems, lawn maintenance, interlocking brick walkways and patios, shrub and tree installation, retaining walls, ponds, lawn installation and shoreline restoration. The landscaping company has two landscape crews and a maintenance crew. They are fully insured and offer free estimates. Northern Lakes Landscaping has expanded its gift selection to include more retail gardening and gift items, including jewelry, purses, scarves and home decorations. They are a dealer of Sierra's footwear and Premier Kites. “We are concentrating on expanding our retail area in 2013 and encourage everyone to stop by and check out our many gifts,” said Jill Croker. Wild Eagle Lodge on Chain sets two Wild Days July 24 and Aug. 7 Wild Eagle Lodge, located at 4443 Chain O’ Lakes Road in Eagle River, will host its Wild Days events Wednesday, July 24, and again Wednesday, Aug. 7. Parking will be available at Northland Pines High School with shuttle service provided to and from Wild Eagle Lodge for the event at 4 p.m. Wild Days will include

numerous games by the Northwoods Children’s Museum of Eagle River, including a squirt-a-shirt, minnow races, plinko and face painting. A caricature artist also will be on hand. Live entertainment will be featured on the lawn, while paddleboard and yoga demos will take place on and near the beach.

A special Conover Chain Skimmers waterski show is slated for 7 p.m. on Duck Lake, and guests are welcome to take along their own chairs. Food and refreshments will be available during the day. Recently, the Small Business Institute/Small Business Administration/UW System conducted anonymous independent surveys of pizza customers of the 11 major pizza restaurants in the Eagle River area. The survey considered quality of food, cleanliness, service and atmosphere. The North Woods is recognized across the Midwest as a summer recreation paradise, offering boating, fishing, golfing, hiking, camping and water sports of all kinds, Besides the many recreational activities, most communities and nonprofit organizations in Vilas and Oneida counties plan family-oriented events for residents and vacationers alike during the summer months. The activities range from art, antique and quilt shows to summer festivals, powwows and fishing tournaments. Most of the events include fun for all ages, plus plenty of food and refreshments. Artarama set this Saturday This coming weekend, a favorite summer attraction will draw thousands of fine art enthusiasts to Riverside Park in Eagle River, as Artarama’s River Walk Art Show is slated for Saturday, July 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. rain or shine. The arts and crafts exhibition will feature many returning and several new artists. It was 41 years ago that a small group of community-minded individuals who loved the world of art conceived the idea of a quality art show. From that core group grew what has become one of the Midwest’s longest running and most

prestigious art and craft shows. “We have learned that the combination of quality and variety keeps people coming back year after year,” said Karen Kubacki. “It takes a full year of work and coordination to put this show together. We constantly look for fresh and innovative artists who not only reflect great skill but talent and taste as well.” The committee selects a balance of artists and craftspeople within painting, fiber art, woodworking, glassware, pottery, jewelry, photography, quality crafts and much more. Approximately 125 artists have

been chosen to exhibit at Artarama. A special feature is the Young at Art tent, where children will be invited to display and sell their handmade creations. Meanwhile, a silent auction will offer donated items from Artarama exhibitors at reduced prices, with all proceeds going toward scholarships and artist in residence programs. Artarama remains a nonprofit organization and all proceeds are returned to the community as civic contributions. Continuing to promote education, Artarama awarded three $1,000

scholarships in 2012, supported the Northland Pines High School band fundraiser and contributed to nearby library art programs. Entertainment will add to the festive atmosphere throughout the day and picnic-style food will be available on site. Parking will be available at Vilas County Fairgrounds. Visitors planning to attend the show and stay in the area for the weekend should make reservations for accommodations as soon as possible. Art Impressions set July 27 The Land O’ Lakes Chamber of Commerce will host Art Impressions 2013 under the pines on the Land O’ Lakes Town Hall grounds Saturday, July 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. Alexander’s brings tradition to your table More than 38 years ago, two brothers came to the North Woods seeking summer jobs. Rooted in a strong Italian community in Chicago, pizza was the staple at home and at college. Hi-Pines features full-service camping, water park in pond and family fun Hi-Pines Campground is a destination campground, located one mile north of downtown Eagle River. They strive to provide camping activities and a family friendly atmosphere. There is something special for everyone to enjoy at Hi-Pines. The campground offers unique amenities to their guests and the general public. Hi-Pines has 40 fullhookup sites, 84 water and electric hookup sites, and 56 pull-throughs. Each site includes a picnic table and fire pit and there is free campground-wide WiFi. Modern bathrooms and showers are also offered. The campground features volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, hay rides, walking trails, an event pavilion, arcade, laundry facilities and more. They are a horse-friendly campground and have horse stables available. One of the state’s top campgrounds, Hi-Pines added the Aqua Play Zone Water Park as one of its amenities last summer. “We are very excited about the new water park. It is the first in the area and is available not only to HiPines campers, but to the general public as well. We have been receiving very positive feedback,” said owner Mark Weber. “Now that summer is finally here, families all around are looking for fun activities they can do together that are financially doable,” Weber stated. “The Aqua Play Zone offers many

inflatable toys for the kids and a sandy beach and shaded areas for adults to relax, all at an affordable price.” Hi-Pines has upgraded its pond by adding a new liner and installing a stateof-the-art water filtration system. The beach has been expanded to nearly 200 feet of sand with beach chairs and shade structures. The 1acre Aqua Play Zone includes inflatable toys, ranging from a 60-foot-long obstacle course to a 12-foothigh jungle gym with a slide. New this year, they have added a Jump Shot trampoline basketball game and more features in the water park and hay rides. They also added scheduled activities for their guests such as bingo on Saturday nights. The Aqua Play Zone is free to camping guests of Hi-Pines. Guests can purchase a Fun Pass for $7 per day Sundays through Thursdays to take advantage of the 66-foot-long Jumping Pillow, Turbo Karts, paddleboats and kayaks. The weekend rate is $10 per day Fridays and Saturdays. The general public may purchase a Fun Pass for $9 per day Sundays through Thursdays or for $13 per day on Friday and Saturday. Three Lakes Lions set annual auction The Three Lakes Lions Club will hold its annual auction Saturday, July 20, at Three Lakes High School with doors opening at 11 a.m. for item inspection. Food and drinks will be available and the sale will begin at noon. “Anyone who has clean, usable and serviceable items they are willing to donate, we ask they please contact the club as soon as possible,” said club Secretary Ken Moak. The club won’t accept donations of clothes, large appliances or sleeper sofas. “This isn’t a rummage sale,” said Moak. “None of these items have sold well in the past. We do take certain large items provided they are in working condition. We’ll even accept boats, snowmobiles, paddleboats, autos, consumer electronics and furniture.” This fundraiser serves the community by providing it with a free haul-away policy, putting on the auction and funding club projects.

Three concerts remain in summer music series The Three Lakes Historical Society will continue its 2013 Summer Concerts in the Park series through Aug. 6. The concerts take place Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. at the Cy Williams Park gazebo, which is located behind the Three Lakes Chamber of Commerce building on Superior Street. The second rodeo performance is set for 7 p.m. Gates to the rodeo arena will open at 5 p.m. “Saturday’s evening rodeo performance is dedicated to breast cancer awareness and everyone is invited to show that they’re tough enough to wear pink,” said a rodeo representative. Sunday, July 21, the rodeo arena gates will open at noon with the final performance at 2 p.m. Pre-rodeo entertainment by the Menominee Saddle Club starts at 1 p.m. Miss U.P. Owner, Al Soczka has been an avid fisherman and antique fishing tackle collector for years, as is evident to those who have been in the shop. “My hobby became my job after I retired,” said Soczka. He is now in his 15th year of business at Tall Pines. The gallery part of the business is an antique fishing tackle shop. Soczka emphasizes that he is always looking to buy old fishing tackle. He pays cash and will conduct an appraisal and offer a fair price. He buys all tackle, he doesn’t pick through the collections that people bring to him. Visitors can buy, sell and even swap lures at Tall Pines. There are items in the shop at all price points. Also of interest for the muskie fishermen is the very popular Muskie Lure Swap Board. The board has about 800 new and slightly used muskie lures on it at this time and is always growing. People can trade in two of their unwanted lures for one of the hot muskie catching lures on the board. This has been a big attraction to the shop due to the high cost of muskie lures. People come into the gallery for a variety of reasons but the most common customers are those who collect old fishing tackle and those looking for unique, one-of-kind cabin décor. Though Soczka buys, sells and trades rods, reels, lures and out-of-print muskie books, his passion really lies in collecting, selling and sharing his love for the history of lures. Many of the customers are regulars that come in
