Everyone likes their steak cut a little different, and you just can’t get that with a precut showcase steak.” Prime Choice grinds its own ground chuck and fresh-ground sirloin. “All of our ground beef is made fresh on the premises, not bought from another processor. We feel that our fresh-ground products makes for great grilling, especially our famous bacon burger, which has bacon blended in for a unique flavor,” noted Behrens. “We also have several additional products available, including restaurantquality stuffed chicken breasts, our very own cranberry bacon burger, custom-seasoned pulled pork and our newest bratwurst, the bacon and cheddar brat,” said Behrens. Plus, try our famous cranberry bratwurst, our top-selling flavored brat and customer favorite.” The popular cranberry brat is featured at Eagle River’s own Cranberry Fest every October. Prime Choice also offers a large selection of deli meats and cheeses. “You can find some of the ordinary meat and cheese varieties found in most other stores, but our focus is on quality taste while still being comparable in price,” said Behrens. “We carry a wide variety
of imported Welsh Cheddars such as English Tintern and Black Mountain along with specialty cheeses such as Domestic Maytag Bleu, Rosenborg Danish Bleu, French imported Brie and several new imported varieties that are very highly rated,” said Behrens. Prime Choice also offers an array of top-quality Wisconsin cheeses, including Deppler’s Full Cream Baby Swiss, Widmers Specialty Brick and Black River Gorgonzola. Recently, the Small Business Institute/Small Business Administration/UW System conducted anonymous independent surveys of pizza customers of the 11 major pizza restaurants in the Eagle River area. The survey considered quality of food, cleanliness, service and atmosphere. Alexander’s Family Pizza was rated #1! “Out of 11 restaurants mentioned — Alexander’s was ranked number 1,” an independent was second, and a national chain was third, “both far behind in customer choice.” Alexander’s was found to “offer a quality product at a reasonable price. According to the survey, quality has proven to be of more importance to the customer. Alexander’s has excellent pizza. It uses the highest quality ingredients.” Alexander’s Family Pizza wishes to thank all the many people who participated in the surveys. We truly appreciate the fact that our long-term goal of wanting to be known for quality pizza has been realized.

Nelson’s Ace Hardware in Eagle River provides friendly, knowledgeable service as well as high-quality products such
as Craftsman tools. New this year is the propane gas filling station for tanks of many sizes.
Customer service, quality products provided at Nelson’s Ace Hardware Customer service and quality products make Nelson’s of Eagle River a North Woods’ leader in the hardware business. According to owner David Eibner, Nelson’s Ace Hardware has received awards for its commitment to providing superior service, achieving the highest levels of retail excellence, supporting the community and making Nelson’s Ace “the helpful place.” The goal of the business is to provide friendly, knowledgeable and helpful service as well as highquality products, Eibner said. New this year at Nelson’s is the LP Gas filling station. Nelson’s can fill propane tanks of all sizes, including those on motorhomes.
Nelson’s Ace Hardware is an authorized Stihl and Ariens dealer, and has a full line of Stihl products in stock. Both service and repair are offered for Stihl products. Additionally, Nelson’s offers Craftsman Tools. Craftsman Tools is America’s most trusted tool brand, according to Eibner. From wrenches and tool cabinets to an extensive collection of power tools, customers can find what they need with Craftsman Tools. The store continues to carry a selection of automotive products, power equipment, plumbing and electronic fixtures and other hardware products. Nelson’s has a wide variety of items for lawns and gardens. They carry a num-
ber of home accessories and gifts. The store has a broad selection of lake toys, including beach balls and towels, goggles and water toys, inner tubes and boat towables. Nelson’s also offers a full line of Weber gas and charcoal grills. The staff at Nelson’s is eager to assist customers in any way possible. The friendly and helpful staff offer customers assistance in locating the items they need, Eibner said. Customer service and a wide selection of products are why Nelson’s has been the area’s hardware business leader since 1952. Eibner, husband of Jessica Nelson, handles the daily operations of the business with his brother-in-
law, Kevin Nelson. This is the fourth generation of family ownership. According to Eibner, two Nelson brothers originally founded a hardware store in Park Falls. After a while, the Nelson brothers separated and Carl Sr. moved to Eagle River and started Nelson’s. Nelson’s Ace Hardware employs more than 50 people and prides itself on its customer service and wide range of products. Located at 606 E. Wall St. in downtown Eagle River, the store is open Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information on Nelson’s selection of products, call (715) 479-4496.

Three Lakes Lions set annual auction The Three Lakes Lions Club will hold its annual auction Saturday, July 21, at Three Lakes High School with doors opening at 11 a.m. for item inspection. Food and drinks will be available and the sale will begin at noon. “Anyone who has clean, usable and serviceable items they are willing to donate, we ask they please contact the club as soon as possible,” said club Secretary Collette Sorgel. The club won’t accept donations of clothes, large appliances or sleeper sofas. “This isn’t a rummage
sale,” said Sorgel. “None of these items have sold well in the past. We do take certain large items provided they are in working condition. We’ll even accept boats, snowmobiles, paddleboats, autos, consumer electronics and furniture.” This fundraiser serves the community by providing it with a free haul-away policy, putting on the auction and funding club projects. For more information, call club member Bob Borek at (715) 546-3457. Club members will visit homes and pick up any donated items.

Lake Forest Golf Club in Eagle River has a rich tradition of providing challenging holes and friendly service. In addition
to the golf course and lakefront clubhouse, Lake Forest offers a health and fitness center that is open to the public.
Visit Lake Forest ‘fore’ golf tradition Lake Forest Golf Club has a rich tradition of providing challenging holes, friendly service and knowledgeable golf professionals to vacationers and local residents. The beautiful North Woods scenery of the historical course makes Lake Forest Golf Club a wonderful place to enhance your summer fun. “You can come by land or by sea,” golf pro Rick “Pepper” Freund said, referring to the course’s location on the Chain of Lakes. The course can be accessed by boat on the channel between Voyageur and Eagle lakes. Guests are welcome to stop by for a game of golf or enjoy food and drinks at the clubhouse. The romantic history of golf at Lake Forest dates back more than 95 years. In 1917, a small group of wealthy “regulars” selected a wooded and hilly farm site with frontage on two lakes and established what was called Eagle Waters Golf Club. They carved a nine-hole golf course from the wooded hills and built a clubhouse. Eagle Waters Golf Club was private and catered to the elite group of cottage owners in the Everett Colony between Catfish and Cranberry lakes. Through the years, the golf
club has entertained the rich and famous. On some days, as many as 100 caddies served the club and its members. While the rest of the country struggled through the Great Depression, the driveways of local estates sported Fleetwoods, Rolls Royces and Cords. Bets of $1,000 per hole were not unusual. Many famous golfers played the course — Walter Hogan, Ollie Meyers and José Hurado, the South American golf champion. In the 1950s, President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his brother, Milton, also were frequent visitors. When Jim Mason purchased Eagle Waters Golf Club in 1963, he built the first four units of Lake Forest Resort. Today, Lake Forest Resort offers golf, tennis, a fitness center and nature trails to guests and the public. The nine-hole golf course winds through the hilly greens and provides tee times from 7 a.m. daily until 6 p.m. This fully irrigated, par36 golf course is 3,000 yards long. Amenities at the golf course include a clubhouse, a fully equipped pro shop, practice green, gas carts and push carts, rental
clubs, and yearly and corporate memberships. Freund offers individual lessons. There also are weekly specials on merchandise at the pro shop. Seniors can receive discounted greens fees seven days a week. Other specials include Sweetheart days Saturdays and Sundays, when couples can play for $24 after 2 p.m. Lake Forest also offers individual 10-play passes. The pass costs $140 for 10 nine-hole rounds and the 11th game is free. The clubhouse serves a full menu of sandwiches, brats and burgers, starting at 11 a.m. Deck and dance parties are held every Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m., featuring live entertainment, weather permitting. The bartenders also can make your favorite drinks, including their famous Bloody Marys. Food and beverage must be ordered at the bar, but guests are welcome to sit at the tables outside or in the clubhouse. If golfers would like more information about golfing at Lake Forest, Freund can be reached at (715) 479-4211. In addition to the golf course, Lake Forest Recreation Area has a health and fitness center which is open to the public. Memberships
are available at the fitness center, and combination memberships for fitness and unlimited golf also are available. The fitness center has an indoor pool, spa, sauna, complete fitness room, locker rooms and a beverage bar. Masseuse and other services are available. For more information on Lake Forest Health and Fitness Center, call 479-3251. Lake Forest is located three miles east of Eagle River off Highway 70. Turn left onto Rangeline Road and follow the signs.

The store is wallpapered with trophy fish, including replica mounts of worldrecord muskies. These replicas include the world-record hybrid muskie, caught by John Knobla on Lac Vieux Desert in northern Vilas County in 1919. It measured 54 inches long and weighed 51 pounds, 3 ounces. A replica of the world-record purebred muskie, which was claimed to weigh 69 pounds, 15 ounces and measured 63.5 inches, also is on display. The Musky Hunter Store focuses on muskie fishermen and features an extensive line of T-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets and hats for men, women and children. Muskie fishing DVDs and books, muskie art prints and novelty items are featured, as well as tools to help you release your next muskie. “We have several new T-shirt and wind-shirt de-

Bait, gifts offered at St. Germain Sport Marine Northern Wisconsin is known for its many lakes available to the public. Fishing and water sports have long been part of the North Woods tradition. St. Germain Sport Marine has been working hard to keep that tradition alive over the past years. Owners Tom and Kim Christensen have created what is now one of the largest dealers of live bait, fishing accessories and water sports supplies in Vilas County. The store is a Department of Natural Resources registration agent, where you can register all your boats, all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles. Boats and boating equipment are offered to customers for sale or rent. Fishing tackle, live bait, toys and gifts can all be
found at St. Germain Sport Marine. Many different styles of boats are featured, such as Sylvan pontoons and aluminum boats. Johnson, Evinrude and Yamaha outboards, ranging from 8- to 15-HP are available for rent at St. Germain Sport Marine. Fish-n-Ski, ski, fishing and pontoon boats and personal watercraft also are for rent. For motor service or repairs, factory-trained mechanics are available for Johnson, Evinrude and Yamaha motors. Portable docks and boat lifts are offered, along with a selection of boating accessories and ski equipment. Customers also can purchase inflatables and tubes to pull behind their boats. St. Germain Sport Marine meets fishing needs as one of the largest dealers of live bait and fishing licenses in Vilas County. A complete selection of rods,
reels, tackle and accessories are available. Several resident fishing experts are on hand to share their knowledge of local waters and give tips to anglers. Anglers can bring in a trophy fish to weigh. The sport marine hosts a certified scale, and all muskies kept (or released with a photo) can be registered in the Vilas County Musky Marathon. St. Germain Sport Marine is a big-game registration station for fall hunters. The gift department features pottery, North Woods and lodge-like décor items, soy candles, small ornamental water fountains, coffee mugs and, new this year, St. Germain photo frames to hold those special vacation moments. Also new this summer is a selection of hand-carved walking sticks and canes. The store features handmade North Woods baskets

Several canoe and kayak river trips, designed for the whole family, are offered by Rohr’s Wilderness Tours in Conover.
Paddlers also may stay at Rohr’s scenic campground or in the luxury vacation rental home.
Exciting river adventures at Rohr’s Wilderness Tours Rohr’s Wilderness Tours, located on the Wisconsin River in Conover, offers canoe, kayak and inflatable kayak raft trips on the scenic Headwaters of the Wisconsin River and other rivers in the area. The Headwaters is a unique section of the mighty Wisconsin River, which flows 434 miles through Wisconsin to the Mississippi River. Small and scenic, this section of the river is not threatening, but with many turns and obstacles to avoid, it is suited for all levels of canoes and kayakers. Rohr’s offers canoe rentals, shuttle service, complete outfitting, canoe instruction, equipment sales, camping at the small campground and lodging at the luxury cabin. Guests have access to trails for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Canoe and kayak trips are available every day, ranging from an hour to several days. The two- and three- to four-hour trips are the most popular with paddlers. Complete outfitting is available for those who may need gear for their overnight trips. Visitors may experience the excitement of half- and
full-day guided whitewater raft trips in fun and safe inflatable kayaks. The trip can become a fishing trip as well. The scenic and quiet campground has state park ambiance with facilities including a deluxe shower house, flush toilets and dump station. Acres of wild blueberries and raspberries grow during berry season, and guests on the property are welcome to pick them. North Woods berries can be the perfect addition to a breakfast. Rohr’s offers walk-in river sites, spacious wooded tent sites and large and beautiful water/electric sites with both 20- and 30-amp service complete with five pull-through electric sites. Seasonal campers are welcome and camping equipment is available for rent if needed. For the tourist who prefers the comforts of home, Rohr’s offers a luxury vacation rental house. The house has four bedrooms, two and two-and-one-half baths, two complete kitchens, dining rooms, and a living room with cathedral ceiling and two gas fireplaces. With a nice, rustic, knotty-pine interior, ceiling fans, hot-water heat and beautiful scenery, it’s a com-
fortable place to enjoy the North Woods. The Rohrs also sponsor the Callie Rohr Memorial Canoe & Kayak Race in memory of their daughter, who lost her life to brain cancer. The proceeds fund research in children’s brain cancer. Again this year, the Rohrs will host an open mic select Saturdays. The large pavilion complete with stage, professional sound system and lights creates a unique ambiance in the 40acre woods. Jeff Rohr himself is an accomplished singer/songwriter with three compact
discs to his credit. The music starts at 7 p.m., but all are welcome to come early and join the Rohrs in a pre-party cookout. Visitors may take something to throw on the grill over the party pit to experience food cooked a over an open fire. Coolers will not be allowed as beer and pop will be available on site. Rohr’s Wilderness Tours (RWT) is located at 5230 Razorback Road in Conover, WI 54519. Rohr’s Wilderness Tours may be reached at (715) 547-3639 or by e-mail at RWTCanoe@nnex.net. Fishing Guide’s Exhibit displayed at NorthernWaters Museum To see the stories that made the Land O’ Lakes area a great place to hunt, fish or just visit, experience the new Guide’s Exhibit at Land O’ Lakes NorthernWaters Museum. Land O’ Lakes NorthernWaters Museum is located just west of downtown Land O’ Lakes, on the south side of Highway B. The museum and all related activities are sponsored by the Land O’ Lakes Historical Society. The “Guide’s Exhibit” is a collection of vintage fishing boat motors, fishing and hunting equipment of the past and nostalgia of times well remembered. Featured are biographies and pictures celebrating many famous guides of years ago, as well as modern guides of the area who carry on the old traditions, contributing to the lore and lure of the North Woods. Stories about guides include tales of the “Big One That Got Away,” plus interesting stories about renowned clients. Old photos and newspaper articles make guides’ biographies come alive. Artifacts donated and loaned to the museum by guides and their clients give visitors a feel for the people who came up to the North Woods year after year, not only to fish for trophy specimens or hunt for game, but also to experience the beauty and serenity of the lakes and pines. Visitors may be a part of the exhibit by writing notes in the visitors guide or adding personal stories about guides they know or remember.
The 2012 Guide’s Exhibit is coordinated by Dr. Barbara Wilkinson, with Sandie Pauly as the exhibit designer. The exhibit will run for two years. Volunteer docents, chaired by Bonnie Clarke, guide visitors through the exhibit, answer questions, and direct history enthusiasts on how to donate or lend articles to the museum. Special events, such as a Shore Lunch party and children’s programs, will be announced. Vacationers and residents also may find fun for children at the museum, as oldtime games and play toys are available for young ones. A series of historical books for young children authored by Marilyn Annin of Land O’ Lakes are on display. Annin’s series of books is uniquely illustrated and based on exhibits featured in recent years at the museum. The books are in a fourbook portfolio which includes “Gillis the Glacier,” telling the ancient geologic history of the area; “The Tree,” featuring the logging era; “The Hill and the Chalet,” relating the story of the museum itself; and “My Summer Vacation,” showing the development of North Woods resorts. Persons wishing to donate, lend photos and artifacts, or share stories on guides or Land O’ Lakes history should contact Barb Wilkinson at (906) 5442183 or drwilks@msn.com. The exhibit will change during its two-year run as additional pictures, stories and artifacts are added. The Land O’ Lakes His-

Local Health Mart Pharmacies offer experienced and knowledgeable staff Serving the health needs of visitors to the North Woods since 1929 are the Health Care Pharmacies. With locations in Land O’ Lakes, St. Germain and on Wall Street in downtown Eagle River, they provide for healthcare needs of Vilas County residents and visitors alike. These pharmacies not only offer old-fashioned personal service, experienced and knowledgeable staff and value pricing, but also use state-of-the-art technology and expertise to serve you better. Health Care Pharmacies are locally owned. The managing pharmacist at each location is an owner in the business, personally investing in the business and providing the best customer care. Personal service is emphasized, with a friendly, knowledgeable staff of pharmacists who have more than 100 years’ combined experience. One customer noted, “They even manage to smile over the phone!” The Health Care Pharmacies are now part of Health Mart, the fourthlargest nationwide pharmacy chain. Health Mart is a network of privately owned pharmacies joined together to leverage the power and efficiencies of a chain. Being independent allows the three locations to be more responsive to customers’ needs and to support their communities. Health Care Pharmacies feature professional prescription service and will call customers’ doctors’ offices or pharmacies back home for approval to fill a lost or forgotten prescription. Travelers can cure small inconveniences such as swimmers’ itch, bug bites, rashes or sunburns at a local Health Care Pharmacy. A variety of anti-itch and sunburn treatments are available, such as the exclusive Bite and Itch lotion, along with an expanded

Each store is equipped with the best technology, operated by experienced, knowledgeable staff. Convenient at-the-door parking is offered at every location. “We may not have a club like the big boxes, but our prices compete with anyone

and we provide service and advice to go with your prescription or over-thecounter items. You will leave the pharmacy with the knowledge to use your product correctly for the best treatment of your condition and fastest recovery,” a pharmacy representative said. Group purchasing has allowed the stores to earn discounts from the wholesaler which, in turn, has lowered prices for consumers. It has allowed the stores to “buy in” on quantities too large to handle if the stores were separate. All stores have been remerchandised for the new season and are full of new, fresh and exciting products for the summer. All three stores are community minded and take pride in civic and community involvement and support of local clubs, churches and civic groups.
