CornerStone fulfills customers’ visions CornerStone Custom Builders Inc. has recently completed its 22nd year supplying custom-built homes varying in style, size and function to fulfill its customers’ visions throughout the North Woods. “We always have prided ourselves on being an innovative business able to adjust to the current trends and desires of our clients,” stated Glenn Schiffmann, president of CornerStone. The most recent trend in the local market, as well as nationally, has been a push to scale back the overall square footage in homes, provide more durable finishes, and utilize greener building products and practices. This summer CornerStone released the CornerStone Cottage Series, a plan booklet dedicated to seven of CornerStone’s most popular cottage floor plans all sharing the same price point of $150,000. Each cottage can be finished turnkey on a lot for this price, or customers can meet individual needs by adding a loft, screen porch, walkout basement or attached garage. “You may find this booklet to be a valuable resource or tool to inspire your ideas as there are no restrictions to the flexibility we can offer in this series, ” confirmed David Cox, vice president of operations.

The traditional backbone of CornerStone’s business is the custom-built single-family home. “We are uniquely equipped to build the home that matches your lifestyle. Our homes are custom built with unlimited available options,” noted Bruce Stefonek, project manager at the Rhinelander office. “To assist in your design decisions, you are invited to tour one of our eight model homes to spark ideas and generate questions as you start your home-building journey,” offered Jeremy Oberlander, project manager located in Eagle River. “Our model homes are a great tool to use when sitting down in the planning stages. The ability to see a vaulted ceiling, the size of potential room or kitchen layout is invaluable,” stated Eric Klein, project manager at the Minocqua office. CornerStone’s originality allows clients to build from their own home plans or sit down with a talented designer and bring a sketch to reality. “Many of the homes we have built are a mixture of several home plans or a combination of our model home floor plans. We have many options to get you started,” stated Darren Rubo, project manager at the Eagle River office. In keeping the tradition of being a leader in the

More and more clients are requesting a larger percentage of green building materials and products which offer additional energy-saving efficiencies in their new homes. The GreenStone features a totally different look and material selection from the other CornerStone model homes presently displayed. CornerStone has been building “green” for many years and felt it was time to provide their customers with the option to certify their CornerStone home at little or no additional cost. “While some of these products add costs on the front end of the project, the goal is to recapture this initial investment with energy savings over time while being sensitive to the demand placed on our natural resources and the North

What makes a great-tasting pizza every time? What makes a great pizza? Tradition. The old ways still work, and all good cooking starts with the basics. Quality food starts with the ingredients. Only the finest ingredients should be used, starting from the bottom up, to ensure satisfied customers who come back time after time for the best pizza around. The first ingredient for any pizza is dough. It should be made with flour that is high gluten, the highest quality flour, Amber Durham wheat — the finest of all wheats, cane sugar and only the best yeast. It must be made fresh, never frozen. The dough should then be thrice raised, which takes 36 hours. This ensures the best dough possible. Pear tomato puree is the main ingredient for the next layer, the sauce. Pear tomatoes are one of the best on the market because they contain the maximum of tomato solids. The best of domestic and imported spices would then be blended to create a uniquely superb sauce with a savory taste. In Wisconsin, cheese is a very important ingredient for pizza. All the cheese used should be 100% Wisconsin full cream moz-

zarella, without one gram of artificial cheese, for the fullest flavor. A superb pizza also contains the best meat. The sausage should be 100% meat, 90% lean whole hog, blended with the finest spices for a delectable taste sure to please even the most discriminating of palates. The pepperoni should also be 100% meat, 90% lean, aged to perfection to enhance the flavor, sure to please all pepperoni lovers. Other toppings available must also be high quality. Only the best onions should be used, including Vadalia, Walla Walla, Texas 10/15, and sweet red Bermuda onions. These create a mouthwatering addition to any pizza. Green peppers must be mixed slightly with the sweetest red bell peppers for an appetizing way to liven up a pizza. California black olives also add a savory taste. For a wild appetite, sweet succulent pineapple, crispy vitamin-rich broccoli, tender flaky solid white albacore, or luscious shrimp could be added. At Alexander’s Pizza, these basics have created a tradition of quality food,

which has made the restaurant the most popular pizza stop for residents and vacationers alike. In addition, when all the ingredients are being artfully combined, nobody wants to think of a dirty kitchen or unsanitary conditions. But never fear, for Alexander’s Pizza has the cleanest kitchen you’ll find. In fact, it would even be clean enough to perform surgery. Of course, an aesthetically pleasing environment is also needed to enjoy the full pleasure of eating delicious pizza. Alexander’s Pizza offers a clean, relaxing environment with friendly service and a casual atmosphere. Games and pool are also available to entertain the kids while the food is being prepared to order. Where do you get pizza made with care and concern? Alexander’s Pizza — that’s where. Alexander’s Pizza is located on Railroad Street in downtown Eagle River. Call (715) 479-7363, and your pizza will be ready when you arrive. Alexander’s Pizza is the place for you. cue dinner. Guests will get an authentic taste of Memphis smoked ribs, butts, sausage, roasted corn and baked beans. “We also kick it up a notch by including hourly raffles and a silent auction,” said Joe Bucher. Blues bands will entertain the crowd starting at 3 p.m., including Joe Bucher’s own blues band, The TopRaiders, as well as other popular blues acts from around the area. “Blues music can be

very diverse. I try to mix it up a lot,” said Bucher. “It’s all blues, but it is played a lot of different ways.” All proceeds from the festival go toward the Northland Pines youth football and cheerleading organization. “Running a youth football program at any level costs money,” said Bucher, a longtime supporter of the program. “A tough economy and shrinking budgets don’t make the fundraising job

any easier, yet this event brings the entire football community together. I’m very excited that we’re on one team now and this event supports our football program from the first day a kid suits up until he graduates from high school.” For more information on Joe Bucher Blues Fest, go to joebucher.com or visit the Facebook page. People can contact blues fest Chairman Andy Skarbeck at (715) 891-0248.

Northwoods Art Tour scheduled July 27-29 The Northwoods Art Tour will be held Friday through Sunday, July 27-29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout Vilas, Oneida, Lincoln, Langlade and Iron counties. More than 30 artists will open the doors of their studios and galleries for a self-guided tour. A diverse variety of original work will be on display to view and purchase directly from regional painters, photographers, potters, furniture makers, wood carvers, jewelers and fiber artists. Visitors may be invited to participate in workshop opportunities at some of the studios. Artists will be on hand to answer ques-

tions, demonstrate and sell their work. A map and detailed information about each artist and location are available for download at northwoodsarttour.com. Among the artists featured on the tour will be woodworker Dan Benecke of St. Germain, weaver Mary Burns of Manitowish Waters, painter Barbara McFarland and watercolorist Audrey Hood Hampton of Elcho.

McFarland said she sees more and more familiar faces on the tours each year. “Participants are returning because they enjoy the uniqueness that each artist contributes to the tour, not only with their individual techniques, but also with what they have learned over the previous year to share in the new year,” she said “Creativity is never stagnant and I feel that we, as artists, are obligated to pass on what we have imagined and learned,” said McFarland. Experience the Wild West up close! Riders of the Lumberjack Steam Train in Laona won’t want to miss the authentic Cowboy

Re-enactment and Robbery Oct. 6. The Timberworks Lumberjack Show will perform July 28.

Ride back in time on historic steam train The historic Lumberjack Steam Train, the only “Prairie”-style steam locomotive operating in Wisconsin, is once again making daily runs to the Wisconsin Forestry Museum Complex in Laona. This is the 44th year that the four-spot steam locomotive will carry passengers to the logging camp complex in the heart of the Nicolet National Forest. From the Soo Line Depot in Laona, visitors climb aboard the 1916 Vulcan steam engine and travel to the Wisconsin Forestry Museum. This train has run on the same tracks for more than 85 years. The tracks for the train have been completely rebuilt. The original track was built around the early 1900s, its rails weighing approximately 60 pounds each. The new rails weigh in at 90 pounds and raise the road bed up 15 inches. The train itself dates back to the year 1916. It was then that the steam locomotive was built by Vulcan Iron Works in Wilkes Barre, Pa. It was purchased Sept. 22, 1926, and brought to Laona to haul logs. The steam engine pulls three cabooses, two steel coaches and an open-air ob-

servation car made from an old box car. The freshly repainted coaches and cabooses now stand gleaming, shiny and ready for riders. Passengers have the opportunity to sit in the authentic coaches and a rare cupola caboose as the vintage steam engine takes them back in time to an actual site of a North Woods logging camp. Wisconsin Forestry Museum’s history dates back to the late 1890s, when it was established as a logging camp. In 1969, it opened as a museum, showcasing artifacts and equiment of lumberjacks and the logging era. The site of the Wisconsin Forestry Museum was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, and also has won numerous awards. Children and adults alike can enjoy the century-old animal barn and corral, which feature a variety of baby animals to feed and pet, including rabbits, kittens, guinea hens, turkeys, chickens and turtles. Three miniature horses and donkeys, as well as pigmy goats and potbelly pigs, have been added to the menagerie this season. All the animals can be approached and petted.

The on-site nature center is a hands-on facility featuring animal pelts and displays of plants, minerals and animals native to the North Woods. Guests can partake in the award-winning “Green Treasure” forest tour. The 30minute narrated tour aboard a motorized surrey winds through an industrial forest of trees indigenous to the area. A Wilderness Water Tour also is available, which takes patrons on a 30-minute hayrack and pontoon boat ride down the Rat River. Guests can also check out the Blacksmith Shop, Cracker Barrel Store, Francis Weiner Diesel Static Display and the Choo Choo Hut Restaurant and Picnic Area. In addition to their permanent facilities, the museum also hosts a variety of special events: — July 14 and Oct. 6, Step back in time and relive the gun slinging ways of the American old West. Ride the train and experience the Wild West up close during the authentic Cowboy Reenactment and robbery of the Lumberjack Steam Train. — July 28, Enjoy the Timberworks Lumberjack Show. Steeped in the logging

history of the North Woods, the show features traditional events including axe throwing, chopping, log rolling, hot sawing and chainsaw carving. Timberworks Lumberjack Show combines sports, history and comedy, providing audiences with the experience of a nostalgic logging competition of the early 1900s. The facility’s season runs from June 21 to Aug. 25. The Lumberjack Steam Train takes four runs a day, rain or shine, and is open Mondays through Saturdays. The attraction also is open during the fall season on the following dates: Sept. 22, Sept. 29 and Oct. 6. Active military service members, their spouses and their immediate families are welcome to visit Wisconsin Forestry Museum free of charge. Group reservations also are accepted, but advance notice is required. Located one hour southeast of Eagle River, guests to the museum cano take a picnic lunch. For additional information, visit lumberjacksteamtrain.com, or contact the Lumberjack Steam Train by phone at (715) 674-3414 or by email info@lumberjacksteamtrain.com.

Family fun found at Kartway and Rocking W Stables Thrills of every kind can be found at Kartway theme park in Eagle River. With numerous go-cart tracks, bumper boats, water balloon catapults, mini golf, miniature jeeps and many other activities, families will never get bored. The traditional road gocart track is the most popular attraction. “When this place was just started, about 30 years ago, the go-carts were the only ride and it was just a circle track,” said owner Dean Nolan. That original track has grown to 850 feet and now features bridges, hairpin turns and long straightaways for all your racing enjoyment. For the children who can’t quite reach the pedals, Kartway offers double carts so that a parent can drive. For those who love speed, Kartway has the faster NasKarts. These cars are styled after sprint car racing machines and allow drivers to open the throttle and speed through banked corners. As if the first two courses are not enough, Kartway has a slick track covered in wax and baby powder to test your driving skills. Slide around the corners on this eight-car track and leave your friends in the dust. Even the youngest drivers can drive at Kartway. The kiddie track allows small children to race around the pavement on miniature jeeps and four

Alexander’s Pizza brings tradition to your table More than 38 years ago, two brothers came to the North Woods seeking summer jobs. Rooted in a strong Italian community in Chicago, pizza was the staple at home and at college. Seeing a lack of pizzerias in the area, the brothers realized a great opportunity existed and opened their own pizzeria in Eagle River. Sources say the locals at the time looked down on them and called them brash boys from “Chi-town.” Today, the pizzeria has become a landmark. Customers come from all over the country to taste the best pizza in the area. Even celebrities have visited Alexander’s on occasion, including professional football players; head coaches from the NFL, NBA and NCAA; hockey players; movie stars; movie critics; national sports commenta-

tors; leaders of U.S. industries; newscasters; and authors. A visiting film critic even gave Alexander’s a “thumbs up.” Although the business opened many years ago, one thing remains the same — the traditional method of making pizza at Alexander’s. The pizza is made the way Grandma Del Cristo said — use the best to make the best. The ingredients used are only the finest, which the owners ensure. The cheese used is 100% full-cream mozzarella, which is straight from the most award-winning dairy in Wisconsin, along with 9-monthaged Romano. The soul of a pizza is the crust, which is made with high-gluten flour. Adding flavor to the pizza is the thick, rich sauce created from tomato puree from

pear tomatoes — the meatiest of tomatoes. The meat also is very lean, at 90% lean meat, with no soy fillers. For the more adventurous pizza connoisseurs, Alexander’s offers broccoli, shrimp, albacore and pineapple to create original gourmet pizzas. Diners also can try a delicious oven-roasted cheese bread appetizer — one-half loaf of freshly baked French bread, basted with butter, seasoned with garlic and aged Romano, covered with mozzarella, roasted to a honey-golden brown and lightly sprinkled with oregano. As one would say in Italian, “Qui si mangia sempre bene!” (Here one always eats well!) Employees at Alexander’s Pizza have hailed from various cities and countries

around the globe. Exchange students from Hungary, England, Spain, Scotland, Lithuania, Jamaica, Poland, Belarus and the Czech Republic have made the trip across the Atlantic to work at Alexander’s Pizza. Alexander’s success is due to the quality put into each pizza. The dough is homemade and triple-raised while the crusts are rolled with care. The delicious

taste of fresh butter is found in every bite of crust as well. Pizza is not the only item on the menu made with care and dedication. Savory sandwiches are made to order with toasted French bread, creamy mozzarella, California tomato sauce and your choice of ham, Italian sausage or meatballs, and any of your favorite pizza toppings. VACATION WEEK

Stephan creates elegant jewelry Lehner-Stephan Jewelers in downtown Eagle River has 67 years of experience and the knowledge to create and repair finequality jewelry, clocks and watches. The business was founded by Al Lehner in 1945. At that time, the store was devoted to making and repairing watches and clocks. The current owner and nephew of Lehner, Mike Stephan, had visited his uncle frequently over the years. He was attending college at UW-Oshkosh when he learned of his uncle’s wish for one of his nephews to take over his business. Two years later in 1978, Mike Stephan enrolled at Milwaukee Area Technical College for watchmaking and jewelry design with the intention of meeting his uncle’s wishes. In 1980, Stephan found himself the new owner of his uncle’s store, but was soon left to learn the rest of the business world by himself, as his uncle died shortly thereafter. Now in 2012, Stephan boasts more than 32 years of experience as a certified master jewelry designer and watchmaker. Stephan is driven by his passion for improving jewelry and the gratification he receives upon creating quality pieces for customers. As an artist, Stephan gravitates toward natural designs, drawing inspiration from pinecones, acorns, deer and the multitude of wildlife he experiences in the North Woods on a daily basis. While Stephan possesses a unique style, this is not the extent of his craft. His vast portfolio ranges from natural shapes to elegant and modern designs. “Simple elegance will always be in,” said Stephan. Stephan’s custom-made pieces feature a variety of materials, including rare elk’s teeth. Stephan explained that two teeth in every elk’s mouth are made of ivory. These teeth are gathered and hand carved for earrings, pendants,

Many customers take their jewelry to Stephan to transform into new, one-ofa-kind pieces. Lehner-Stephan Jewelers sells a large selection of fine watches, rings, engagement rings, bracelets, charms, earrings, pendants and other fine jewelry. from the Czech Republic. Popular items include Bavano enameled wall art. If the store doesn’t have what you’re looking for, Stephan can find it. “We can get anything that anybody wants,” explained Stephan. “I shop for people.” His network of suppliers and craftsmen help hunt down whatever a customer desires. Visitors won’t need to worry about price. LehnerStephan uses the same suppliers as chain stores, allowing Stephan to compete with any price. However, Stephan offers a quality piece that has been looked over and cared for by a true artisan. “Customers know that we really care and that we have the knowledge and

ability,” Stephan added. “They can trust us; that’s why they come back year after year.” Family history, years of experience, knowledge and the desire to make each piece the best it can be makes Lehner-Stephan a very special and unique jewelry store and one of the best in the area. “Come and see what we are really about,” said Stephan. “You won’t be disappointed.” Lehner-Stephan Jewelers is located at 110 Wall St. in Eagle River. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. The store can also be reached by phone at (715) 479-4520 or on the website at michaelseaglegold.com.

For many years, stopping in at Country Store in downtown Eagle River has been a tradition of many families. Dick and Debbie Preuhs thank all their loyal customers for their support as they continue in their 29th summer as owners. A commitment to quality is one of the reasons

Country Store has won awards for its chocolate walnut fudge, caramel corn and cashew snappers. Though fudge and turtles are customer favorites, there are many other great candies and chocolates available. Toffee, almond bark and chocolate pretzels also are popular. One of the largest selections of sugar-free chocolates is available for those with special dietary needs. Continuing to be popular this year, cinnamontoasted almonds, pecans and cashews are made right at the store.

Country Store has expanded its line of saltwater taffy and has many fun-filled types of candy. It also stocks nostalgic brands of candy for the child in everyone. After customers purchase their candy, they can cool down with a refreshing ice-cream cone, sundae, malt or soda. Customers have more than 24 flavors to choose from, and can get a chocolate-dipped cone or a chocolate-sprinkled cone. Children can enjoy a special treat of sitting at the store’s “children only” table. In fall, it’s time to begin the caramel apple season. “As customers anticipate the first apple of the season, they often remind us they are the best caramel apples they have ever tasted,” said owner Debbie Preuhs. When people start to

head home after vacation, gifts of candy from Country Store is a great way to say thank-you, or a wonderful remembrance of time spent in Eagle River. “Customers tell us all the time they need to bring home Country Store treats for their families, friends or co-workers who are always requesting it,” said Debbie Preuhs. “Even the family dog is happy to get our special dog bones.” Don’t forget about Country Store at Christmas. The Country Store staff is able to help with gifts for family, friends and corporate associates. Order early because Country Store gets very busy around this season. Located at 116 E. Wall St., Country Store is open daily year-round. Call (715) 479-9226 or visit the website at ercandy.com.

VACATION WEEK

Family fun thru mini golf provided at Eagle Falls Eagle Falls Adventure Golf is owned and operated by Mark and Karen Cropsey and their children, Zach and Emily, of St. Germain. They have been in the area 14 years, managing vacation properties and rentals. Eagle Falls, located in Eagle River, is in its sixth season. Construction for a new laser tag arena will begin fall 2013. The theme of the course is a 1950s fishing camp. Golfers putt their way around a fishing cabin, a bait shop and a fishing dock. “We wanted to create a mini golf course that was challenging and interactive,” said Mark Cropsey. Golfers can make several choices throughout the course. For example, they can cross the river by bridge or stepping stones, descend the ranger tower by stairs or slide, and many holes have multiple options for play. The Cropseys are always working hard to change and improve the course. The landscaping is constantly maintained and updated to keep the course fresh and exciting for the golfers. “People discover something new each time they come to the course,” said Mark Cropsey. If you look close, hole No. 5 is in the shape of a giant muskie where you tee off at the tail and putt past the fin rock

formations. The muskie’s eye is the cup. “We wanted to build a course that was different from the normal mini golf course,” said Karen Cropsey. “Something symbolic was needed to highlight the area. Therefore, the main rock formation and waterfall features an eagle’s head.” In addition to the cascading waterfalls, the course also includes lakes, rivers and fountains. “We wanted the water features to really stand out,”

explained Mark Cropsey. “The course has 20,000 gallons of water.” This year players will see water trickling down the new water tower feature by hole’s No. 1 and No. 2 into a nearby pond. Also featured is a yellow canoe planted full of beautiful flowers along the side of the course. After finishing a round, golfers have the chance to win a free game on the 18th hole, humorously called “Nature Calls.” The hole fea-

tures a talking outhouse that has become a fun feature of the course. The outhouse comments on golfers’ shots and then flushes if a free game is won. Any free passes given by Eagle Falls will never expire, so customers can use them at their own convenience. Eagle Falls Adventure Golf offers discounts to camps, clubs and large groups. When golfing with a group of four or more, receive $1 off each golfer in the group. Complimentary coupons may be found at local businesses and on the back of all Vacation Week issues. The coupons are not available at the course. The course is open every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. weather permitting. Eagle Falls Adventure Golf is located between Trig’s Shell Station and Dollar General at 1040 E. Pine St. in Eagle River, just off the highways 45 and 70 bypass. Saturday night’s summer fun theme is “Roadkill,” offering delicious chopped sirloin, “smashed potatoes,” and soup and salad starting at 5 p.m. Lon and Deb Millard have owned and operated the restaurant since 1995. Their appreciation for wildlife is apparent in the restaurant’s décor. A collection of antlers and mounts, including a 17-point buck, also contributes to the restaurant’s North Woods atmosphere. “Your North Woods experience isn’t complete without a pile of homemade onion rings and exchanging a few tales across the gorgeous pine bar,” said Lon Millard. St. Germain — A premier destination St. Germain serves visitors and area residents as a premier destination. One might even say the community is “Home of the Authentic Northwoods Experience.” St. Germain offers a host of natural resources, recreational opportunities, dining, lodging and shopping for all seasons. The area’s dense forests are marked by trails of all types, making way for hikers, bikers, snowmobilers, skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts. For a safe and scenic bike ride, try out the 12 miles of paved trail on the St. Germain Bike and Hike Trail. Parking is available behind the St. Germain Chamber of Commerce. This trail is part of the Heart of Vilas Bike Trail and connects the communi-

ties of St. Germain, Sayner and Boulder Junction for almost 27 miles of paved trail riding. Just north of town on Highway 155, the Fern Ridge Trail offers hikers a variety of wildflowers, trees and nonflowering plants, making the trail beautiful during all seasons. The trail is only three-quarters of a mile, but has lots of challenging terrain. Three hiking loops of varied length provide pleasure walking on the Awassa Nature Preserve and Hiking Trail on the west edge of St. Germain. In addition, a halfmile nature trail with a printed interpretive guide is accessible to all, including wheelchair users. The Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club, the largest and one of the most active in the state, has built and maintains more than 100 miles of trails in the St. Germain area. Snowmobile rentals

are available within the community. St. Germain also is home to the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame, where visitors can learn about the history of snowmobile development and racing. Many different snowmobiles from early models to championship sleds are on display. The year-round fishing on dozens of lakes in the St. Germain area is said to be legendary. Vilas County is dotted with more than 1,300 lakes and plenty of streams and rivers. St. Germain offers fishing for everything from crappies to trophy muskies. Canoeing, kayaking and boating opportunities beckon visitors to St. Germain’s many lakes and streams, including the St. Germain River and the Wisconsin River. There are many activities that visitors can take part in while visiting St. Germain.

The St. Germain Golf Club, rated 4.5 stars by Golf Digest, is challenging and fun. The 18-hole public golf course boasts woods and water. There also are a variety of mini golf courses, gocart tracks and horseback riding facilities close to town. When visitors are done enjoying the outdoors, there are plenty of things to see and do in the St. Germain area, including many community events and festivals throughout the year. A flea market is held every Monday through Labor Day from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the community park. Bingo is held every Monday at the community center through August. There is a Farmers Market held every Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the pavilion just west of the chamber of commerce along Highway 70. The Farmers Market runs through Aug. 31. The eighth annual Pig in the Pines Ribfest will be Aug. 2-4. This fun-filled

VACATION WEEK

Memories made at Lick-a-dee Splitz “When I go to Lick-a-dee Splitz, I feel like dancing!” That’s how one young patron described his experience at the Three Lakes ice cream shop. “To me,” said owner Denise Kerns, “that speaks as highly of us as a five-star review. Our top-quality products make me proud, but the staff and the atmosphere are what it’s really all about.” At Lick-a-dee Splitz in the heart of downtown Three Lakes, every customer is greeted with a smile and a genuine desire to make each trip a happy memory. From the music played to the cheerful, unique décor and the friendly staff, everything at Licka-dee Splitz says, “Good times happen here!” Patrons can select from 28-plus flavors of ice cream, a dozen or so varieties of fudge made right on the premises and sampled freely, and an impressive array of chocolates. Ice cream cakes and pies are custom made for any special event. Also featured are novelty and nostalgic candies, toys, gifts and more. To quench any thirst, try the fresh-squeezed lemonade, an all-natural fruit smoothie or one of the classic glass-bottled soft drinks. Up for a challenge? Then the Bidonkadonk is for you! This massive sundae, comprised of 12 scoops of ice cream and four toppings plus whipped cream, nuts and cherries was originally intended as a family-sized treat, but each year dozens of people of all ages conquer the giant treat on their own. “I don’t recommend it,” said Kerns, “but it’s like a proverbial frozen mountain that some feel compelled to climb just because it’s there!” Everyone who eats a Bidonkadonk, whether alone or in a group, gets their picture taken and

Gifts, art found at Trading Post From fine clothing to handsome Navajo rugs, from exquisite silver and turquoise Native American jewelry to Depression glass, from children’s books to antique Skookum dolls, the two Trading Post stores in downtown Land O’ Lakes boast an amazing mix of memorable merchandise, according to owner Barb Nehring. Trading Post Internationale and Trading Post Antiques, side-by-side stores in downtown Land O’ Lakes, have been “must see” attractions for Land O’ Lakes residents and visitors. Trading Post Internationale is celebrating its 68th year, while Trading Post Antiques is more than 21 years old. Owners Harold and Barbara Nehring, who, in 1964, took over the original business started by Harold’s family, have expert knowledge of their wares and offer friendly and personal service to customers. Throughout both stores, visitors will find the widest selection of authentic handwoven Navajo rugs in the area, including rare turnof-the-century masterpieces. Like the older rugs, the new Navajo rugs are examples of the highestquality Navajo weavings. Both old and new, for the floor or for the wall, the rugs can be the perfect accessories for rustic North Woods homes or sophisticated city dwellings. Native American art enthusiasts will find a selection of handmade Ojibwe (Chippewa) woodland Indian beadwork and quillwork, including porcupine quill boxes in a wide variety. These boxes, made of birch bark and sweet grass, are decorated with natural and dyed porcupine quills. Unique to the woodland tribes, they are rare due to a decreasing number of Native American artists able to invest the time to make them. Trading Post Internationale also features clothing for men, women and children, with moccasins for all. Handmade Native American moccasins sit comfortably beside popular Minnetonka moccasins.

Trading Post Internationale in downtown Land O’ Lakes offers handcrafted Native American gifts, art and musical instruments.

Woolrich for men, women and children is a prominent name in the clothing department. Escargot and Tasha Polizi are two unique lines for women. Hartstrings, Kitestrings, Hatley and Purple Mountain add to the growing children’s department, which includes a carefully selected group of toys and books geared to nature and Native American appreciation. On the traditional side, Trading Post Internationale has a selection of elegant gifts, such as Bohemian ruby glass, Royal Doulton and Hummel figurines and crystal. These items join North Woods decorative accessories such as Native American-made birch-bark mirrors, lamps, dream catchers, and distinctive antler wall hangings by Wisconsin artist Dave Stencil. Trading Post Internationale also features individually designed, ceramic lake mugs and other personalized accessories by local artist Judy Thomas of Country Ceramics. Handmade, silver and turquoise jewelry from the Southwest, fashioned by Navajo, Hopi, Zuni and Santo Domingo Indians, as well as an array of handcarved Zuni fetishes, fill the jewelry cases at Trading Post Internationale. One-of-a-kind, elegant

Fine clothing, Navajo rugs, one-of-a-kind jewelry and more are part of the store’s unique collection.

silver jewelry pieces from local silversmith, J. Erik, are also on the Trading Post shelves. Popular copper jewelry, some set with turquoise from Native American crafters and flame-drawn copper and agate jewelry from Wisconsin copper artist Pam Smith also are part of the Trading Post jewelry mix. A quick visit to Trading Post Antiques next door reveals a world of antiques, plus more Native American decorative arts such as Ojibwe birchbark and Winnebago black-ash baskets. Antiques include majolica, Depression glass, oil lamps, kitchenware, pottery, paintings, tools, clocks, Jim Beam bottles, primitive and Victorian furniture, wicker items, duck and fish decoys, railroad items and Oriental rugs. Trading Post Antiques also has Indian “Skookum” dolls in its comprehensive collection of handmade items celebrating Native American heritage. “These dolls, sold as souvenirs from the early 1920s to the early 1950s, have become highly sought after. Each one is hand-painted and uniquely dressed. It is rare to find so many in one place,” said Nehring. Both Trading Post Internationale and Trading Post Antiques house a variety of

Hopi and Navajo kachina dolls, hand-carved from cottonwood tree roots and then hand painted. Each represents a special spirit, which connects mankind to the gods in the Southwest Native American tradition. Trading Post Antiques also carries handmade Taos and Cochiti Indian drums and lamps with deerskin shades. The hides are hand cured and the drums are carved out of cottonwood. Drums and lampshades are then hand painted by the Pueblo artists. Representing the woodland tribes, Trading Post Internationale highlights a collection of antler carvings by Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe artist Wayne Valliere. Trading Post Internationale and Trading Post Antiques are both located on Highway B in downtown Land O’ Lakes. Trading Post Internationale is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays by chance or by appointment. Trading Post Antiques is open by request from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, or evenings and Sundays by appointment.
