Faerie Fest set in Three Lakes Tickets are now available at M&I/BMO Harris Bank for the fourth annual Woodland Enchantment Faerie Festival set for July 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Enchanted Garden in Three Lakes. Northwoods Art Tour scheduled July 27-29 The Northwoods Art Tour will be held Friday through Sunday, July 27-29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout Vilas, Oneida, Lincoln, Langlade and Iron counties. More than 30 artists will open the doors of their studios and galleries for a self-guided tour. A diverse variety of original work will be on display to view and purchase directly from regional painters, photographers, potters, furniture makers, wood carvers, jewelers and fiber artists. Visitors may be invited to participate in workshop opportunities at some of the studios. Artists will be on hand to answer ques-

Experience the Wild West up close! Riders of the Lumberjack Steam Train in Laona won’t want to miss the authentic Cowboy

Ride back in time on historic steam train The historic Lumberjack Steam Train, the only “Prairie”-style steam locomotive operating in Wisconsin, is once again making daily runs to the Wisconsin Forestry Museum Complex in Laona. This is the 44th year that the four-spot steam locomotive will carry passengers to the logging camp complex in the heart of the Nicolet National Forest. From the Soo Line Depot in Laona, visitors climb aboard the 1916 Vulcan steam engine and travel to the Wisconsin Forestry Museum. This train has run on the same tracks for more than 85 years. The tracks for the train have been completely rebuilt. The original track was built around the early 1900s, its rails weighing approximately 60 pounds each. The new rails weigh in at 90 pounds and raise the road bed up 15 inches. The train itself dates back to the year 1916. It was then that the steam locomotive was built by Vulcan Iron Works in Wilkes Barre, Pa. It was purchased Sept. 22, 1926, and brought to Laona to haul logs. The steam engine pulls three cabooses, two steel coaches and an open-air ob-

servation car made from an old box car. The freshly repainted coaches and cabooses now stand gleaming, shiny and ready for riders. Passengers have the opportunity to sit in the authentic coaches and a rare cupola caboose as the vintage steam engine takes them back in time to an actual site of a North Woods logging camp. Wisconsin Forestry Museum’s history dates back to the late 1890s, when it was established as a logging camp. In 1969, it opened as a museum, showcasing artifacts and equiment of lumberjacks and the logging era. The site of the Wisconsin Forestry Museum was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, and also has won numerous awards. Children and adults alike can enjoy the century-old animal barn and corral, which feature a variety of baby animals to feed and pet, including rabbits, kittens, guinea hens, turkeys, chickens and turtles. Three miniature horses and donkeys, as well as pigmy goats and potbelly pigs, have been added to the menagerie this season. All the animals can be approached and petted.

The on-site nature center is a hands-on facility featuring animal pelts and displays of plants, minerals and animals native to the North Woods. Guests can partake in the award-winning “Green Treasure” forest tour. The 30minute narrated tour aboard a motorized surrey winds through an industrial forest of trees indigenous to the area. A Wilderness Water Tour also is available, which takes patrons on a 30-minute hayrack and pontoon boat ride down the Rat River. Guests can also check out the Blacksmith Shop, Cracker Barrel Store, Francis Weiner Diesel Static Display and the Choo Choo Hut Restaurant and Picnic Area. In addition to their permanent facilities, the museum also hosts a variety of special events: — July 14 and Oct. 6, Step back in time and relive the gun slinging ways of the American old West. Ride the train and experience the Wild West up close during the authentic Cowboy Reenactment and robbery of the Lumberjack Steam Train. — July 28, Enjoy the Timberworks Lumberjack Show. Steeped in the logging

history of the North Woods, the show features traditional events including axe throwing, chopping, log rolling, hot sawing and chainsaw carving. Timberworks Lumberjack Show combines sports, history and comedy, providing audiences with the experience of a nostalgic logging competition of the early 1900s. The facility’s season runs from June 21 to Aug. 25. The Lumberjack Steam Train takes four runs a day, rain or shine, and is open Mondays through Saturdays. The attraction also is open during the fall season on the following dates: Sept. 22, Sept. 29 and Oct. 6. Active military service members, their spouses and their immediate families are welcome to visit Wisconsin Forestry Museum free of charge. Family fun found at Kartway and Rocking W Stables Thrills of every kind can be found at Kartway theme park in Eagle River. With numerous go-cart tracks, bumper boats, water balloon catapults, mini golf, miniature jeeps and many other activities, families will never get bored. The traditional road gocart track is the most popular attraction. “When this place was just started, about 30 years ago, the go-carts were the only ride and it was just a circle track,” said owner Dean Nolan. That original track has grown to 850 feet and now features bridges, hairpin turns and long straightaways for all your racing enjoyment. For the children who can’t quite reach the pedals, Kartway offers double carts so that a parent can drive. For those who love speed, Kartway has the faster NasKarts. These cars are styled after sprint car racing machines and allow drivers to open the throttle and speed through banked corners. As if the first two courses are not enough, Kartway has a slick track covered in wax and baby powder to test your driving skills. Slide around the corners on this eight-car track and leave your friends in the dust. Even the youngest drivers can drive at Kartway. The kiddie track allows small children to race around the pavement on miniature jeeps and four

wheelers. To cool off on those blistering summer days, Kartway has an assortment of water activities. Motorized bumper boats allow riders to splash around and bump each other until everyone is soaked. Drivers also can team up and push less-fortunate riders into the fountain located in the middle of the pool. Everyone is sure to be drenched after this one. For a glorified water-balloon fight, check out Water Wars! In this game, two people are given a bucket of water balloons. Each person then goes to their respective area and loads their water balloons into a slingshot, to

Challenging for all ages, players will have to avoid water hazards and obstacles in order to defeat their opponent. Kartway also serves candy, chips, soda and water available in concessions. Picnic areas also are available for guest use. Kartway’s well-trained staff operate and supervise the rides in order to avoid any accidents. Nolan said the staff members age 16 and older control the adult rides and those younger than 16 are responsible for the kiddie rides. Tickets for the go-carts, slick track, NasKart, bumper boats and golf are $4 each. For children age 5 and younger, golf is free. A six-pack of tickets can be purchased for $24, with the seventh free. Tickets for the kiddie karts and Water Wars! are available for $2 each. A sixpack of tickets for these games can be purchased for $12, with the seventh free. Visitors also can enjoy

Rocking W Stables, located right next to Kartway. Riders of any skill level can partake in a 45- to 50-minute 3mile guided trail ride through the North Woods. Guests ages 6 and older can ride solo for $18, or for $25 visitors can ride double on a horse to accommodate riders age 5 and younger. Pony rides also are available for $5. Rocking W Stables is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Horse-drawn wagon rides are provided at HiPines Campground every Friday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. No reservations are needed. Communities plan summer events The North Woods is recognized across the Midwest as a summer recreation paradise, offering boating, fishing, golfing, hiking, camping and water sports of all kinds, Besides the many recreational activities, most communities and nonprofit organizations in Vilas and Oneida counties plan family-oriented events for residents and vacationers alike during the summer months. The activities range from art, antique and quilt shows to summer festivals, powwows and fishing tournaments. Most of the events include fun for all ages, plus plenty of food and refreshments. Alexander’s Pizza brings tradition to your table More than 38 years ago, two brothers came to the North Woods seeking summer jobs. Rooted in a strong Italian community in Chicago, pizza was the staple at home and at college. Seeing a lack of pizzerias in the area, the brothers realized a great opportunity existed and opened their own pizzeria in Eagle River. Sources say the locals at the time looked down on them and called them brash boys from “Chi-town.” Today, the pizzeria has become a landmark. Customers come from all over the country to taste the best pizza in the area. Even celebrities have visited Alexander’s on occasion, including professional football players; head coaches from the NFL, NBA and NCAA; hockey players; movie stars; movie critics; national sports commenta-

tors; leaders of U.S. industries; newscasters; and authors. A visiting film critic even gave Alexander’s a “thumbs up.” Although the business opened many years ago, one thing remains the same — the traditional method of making pizza at Alexander’s. The pizza is made the way Grandma Del Cristo said — use the best to make the best. The ingredients used are only the finest, which the owners ensure. The cheese used is 100% full-cream mozzarella, which is straight from the most award-winning dairy in Wisconsin, along with 9-monthaged Romano. The soul of a pizza is the crust, which is made with high-gluten flour. Adding flavor to the pizza is the thick, rich sauce created from tomato puree from

Stephan creates elegant jewelry Lehner-Stephan Jewelers in downtown Eagle River has 67 years of experience and the knowledge to create and repair finequality jewelry, clocks and watches. As an artist, Stephan gravitates toward natural designs, drawing inspiration from pinecones, acorns, deer and the multitude of wildlife he experiences in the North Woods on a daily basis. While Stephan possesses a unique style, this is not the extent of his craft. His vast portfolio ranges from natural shapes to elegant and modern designs. “Simple elegance will always be in,” said Stephan. Concerts in the Park continue into August The Three Lakes Historical Society will continue its free Concerts in the Park live-music series, which take place Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. at the Cy Williams Park gazebo, just north of the chamber of commerce building on Superior Street in Three Lakes. The concerts attract picnickers and music fans of all ages who are treated to a variety of musical styles in a relaxed setting. The upcoming 2012 Concerts in the Park schedule includes GB’s Dance Band July 31 and Bret & Frisk

Country Store has expanded its line of saltwater taffy and has many fun-filled types of candy. It also stocks nostalgic brands of candy for the child in everyone. After customers purchase their candy, they can cool down with a refreshing ice-cream cone, sundae, malt or soda. Customers have more than 24 flavors to choose from, and can get a chocolate-dipped cone or a chocolate-sprinkled cone. In fall, it’s time to begin the caramel apple season. “As customers anticipate the first apple of the season, they often remind us they are the best caramel apples they have ever tasted,” said owner Debbie Preuhs. Family fun thru mini golf provided at Eagle Falls Eagle Falls Adventure Golf is owned and operated by Mark and Karen Cropsey and their children, Zach and Emily, of St. Germain. They have been in the area 14 years, managing vacation properties and rentals. Eagle Falls, located in Eagle River, is in its sixth season. Construction for a new laser tag arena will begin fall 2013. The theme of the course is a 1950s fishing camp. Golfers putt their way around a fishing cabin, a bait shop and a fishing dock. “We wanted to create a mini golf course that was challenging and interactive,” said Mark Cropsey. Golfers can make several choices throughout the course. For example, they can cross the river by bridge or stepping stones, descend the ranger tower by stairs or slide, and many holes have multiple options for play. The Cropseys are always working hard to change and improve the course. The landscaping is constantly maintained and updated to keep the course fresh and exciting for the golfers. “People discover something new each time they come to the course,” said Mark Cropsey. If you look close, hole No. 5 is in the shape of a giant muskie where you tee off at the tail and putt past the fin rock

formations. The muskie’s eye is the cup. “We wanted to build a course that was different from the normal mini golf course,” said Karen Cropsey. “Something symbolic was needed to highlight the area. Therefore, the main rock formation and waterfall features an eagle’s head.” In addition to the cascading waterfalls, the course also includes lakes, rivers and fountains. “We wanted the water features to really stand out,”

explained Mark Cropsey. “The course has 20,000 gallons of water.” This year players will see water trickling down the new water tower feature by hole’s No. 1 and No. 2 into a nearby pond. Also featured is a yellow canoe planted full of beautiful flowers along the side of the course. After finishing a round, golfers have the chance to win a free game on the 18th hole, humorously called “Nature Calls.” The hole fea-

tures a talking outhouse that has become a fun feature of the course. The outhouse comments on golfers’ shots and then flushes if a free game is won. Any free passes given by Eagle Falls will never expire, so customers can use them at their own convenience. Eagle Falls Adventure Golf offers discounts to camps, clubs and large groups. When golfing with a group of four or more, receive $1 off each golfer in the group. Complimentary coupons may be found at local businesses and on the back of all Vacation Week issues. St. Germain — A premier destination St. Germain serves visitors and area residents as a premier destination. One might even say the community is “Home of the Authentic Northwoods Experience.” St. Germain offers a host of natural resources, recreational opportunities, dining, lodging and shopping for all seasons. The area’s dense forests are marked by trails of all types, making way for hikers, bikers, snowmobilers, skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts. For a safe and scenic bike ride, try out the 12 miles of paved trail on the St. Germain Bike and Hike Trail. Parking is available behind the St. Germain Chamber of Commerce. This trail is part of the Heart of Vilas Bike Trail and connects the communi-

ties of St. Germain, Sayner and Boulder Junction for almost 27 miles of paved trail riding. Just north of town on Highway 155, the Fern Ridge Trail offers hikers a variety of wildflowers, trees and nonflowering plants, making the trail beautiful during all seasons. The trail is only three-quarters of a mile, but has lots of challenging terrain. Three hiking loops of varied length provide pleasure walking on the Awassa Nature Preserve and Hiking Trail on the west edge of St. Germain. In addition, a halfmile nature trail with a printed interpretive guide is accessible to all, including wheelchair users. The Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club, the largest and one of the most active in the state, has built and maintains more than 100 miles of trails in the St. Germain area. Snowmobile rentals

are available within the community. St. Germain also is home to the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame, where visitors can learn about the history of snowmobile development and racing. Many different snowmobiles from early models to championship sleds are on display. The year-round fishing on dozens of lakes in the St. Germain area is said to be legendary. Vilas County is dotted with more than 1,300 lakes and plenty of streams and rivers. St. Germain offers fishing for everything from crappies to trophy muskies. Canoeing, kayaking and boating opportunities beckon visitors to St. Germain’s many lakes and streams, including the St. Germain River and the Wisconsin River. There are many activities that visitors can take part in while visiting St. Germain.

The St. Germain Golf Club, rated 4.5 stars by Golf Digest, is challenging and fun. The 18-hole public golf course boasts woods and water. There also are a variety of mini golf courses, gocart tracks and horseback riding facilities close to town. When visitors are done enjoying the outdoors, there are plenty of things to see and do in the St. Germain area, including many community events and festivals throughout the year. A flea market is held every Monday through Labor Day from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the community park. Bingo is held every Monday at the community center through August. There is a Farmers Market held every Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the pavilion just west of the chamber of commerce along Highway 70. The Farmers Market runs through Aug. 31. Trading Post Internationale and Trading Post Antiques, side-by-side stores in downtown Land O’ Lakes, have been “must see” attractions for Land O’ Lakes residents and visitors. Trading Post Internationale is celebrating its 68th year, while Trading Post Antiques is more than 21 years old. Owners Harold and Barbara Nehring, who, in 1964, took over the original business started by Harold’s family, have expert knowledge of their wares and offer friendly and personal service to customers. Throughout both stores, visitors will find the widest selection of authentic handwoven Navajo rugs in the area, including rare turnof-the-century masterpieces. Like the older rugs, the new Navajo rugs are examples of the highestquality Navajo weavings. Both old and new, for the floor or for the wall, the rugs can be the perfect accessories for rustic North Woods homes or sophisticated city dwellings. Native American art enthusiasts will find a selection of handmade Ojibwe (Chippewa) woodland Indian beadwork and quillwork, including porcupine quill boxes in a wide variety. These boxes, made of birch bark and sweet grass, are decorated with natural and dyed porcupine quills. Unique to the woodland tribes, they are rare due to a decreasing number of Native American artists able to invest the time to make them. Trading Post Internationale also features clothing for men, women and children, with moccasins for all. Handmade Native American moccasins sit comfortably beside popular Minnetonka moccasins.

Antiques include majolica, Depression glass, oil lamps, kitchenware, pottery, paintings, tools, clocks, Jim Beam bottles, primitive and Victorian furniture, wicker items, duck and fish decoys, railroad items and Oriental rugs. Trading Post Antiques also has Indian “Skookum” dolls in its comprehensive collection of handmade items celebrating Native American heritage. “These dolls, sold as souvenirs from the early 1920s to the early 1950s, have become highly sought after. Each one is hand-painted and uniquely dressed. It is rare to find so many in one place,” said Nehring. Both Trading Post Internationale and Trading Post Antiques house a variety of

Hopi and Navajo kachina dolls, hand-carved from cottonwood tree roots and then hand painted. Each represents a special spirit, which connects mankind to the gods in the Southwest Native American tradition. Trading Post Antiques also carries handmade Taos and Cochiti Indian drums and lamps with deerskin shades. The hides are hand cured and the drums are carved out of cottonwood. Drums and lampshades are then hand painted by the Pueblo artists. Representing the woodland tribes, Trading Post Internationale highlights a collection of antler carvings by Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe artist Wayne Valliere.
