Recently, the Small Business Institute/Small Business Administration/UW System conducted anonymous independent surveys of pizza customers of the 11 major pizza restaurants in the Eagle River area. The survey considered quality of food, cleanliness, service and atmosphere. Alexander’s Family Pizza was rated #1! “Out of 11 restaurants mentioned — Alexander’s was ranked number 1,” an independent was second, and a national chain was third, “both far behind in customer choice.” Alexander’s was found to “offer a quality product at a reasonable price. According to the survey, quality has proven to be of more importance to the customer. Alexander’s has excellent pizza. It uses the highest quality ingredients.” Alexander’s Family Pizza wishes to thank all the many people who participated in the surveys. We truly appreciate the fact that our long-term goal of wanting to be known for quality pizza has been realized.

VACATION WEEK
31 years of top dining, service have built Sportsmen’s Chalet Sportsmen’s Chalet on Dead Horse Bend, three miles east of St. Germain, offers great dining for the whole family in a North Woods atmosphere with mounted wildlife and an assortment of antiques. In the late 1800s, there stood a horse farm where Sportsmen’s Chalet is located, with a logging camp on the other side of the Wisconsin River. Loggers would often bring their horses across the river for food and lodging at the farm. In 1917 a bar was built where the farm once was, named Dead Horse Bend after a bend in the river where many logging horses fell through the ice. Gary Don and Laurel Frank purchased the bar in 1981, renaming it Sportsmen’s Chalet on Dead Horse Bend. They and their two daughters, Tricia and Rochelle, welcome you to their establishment. Sportsmen’s Chalet begins serving lunch at 11:30 a.m and dinner at 5 p.m. Menu items include delicious steaks, shrimp, juicy broasted chicken, homemade pizza and the North Woods’ best ribs. Nightly specials are featured during the week. Sunday’s special includes half of a broasted chicken for $8.95 or onefourth of a broasted chicken with a half-rack of barbecued ribs for $14.50. On Mondays, customers may order one deep-fried or broiled walleye for $10.95 or all-you-can-eat spaghetti for $9.50. Also available on Mon-

Grandma’s Toy Box home to games, puzzles “It’s the first stop we make when we come to Eagle River,” said one visitor who’s been shopping at Grandma’s Toy Box since it opened four years ago. Why is Grandma’s Toy Box so popular? Owner Kathy Holperin attributes the store’s success to the offering of traditional and hard-to-find items. “I choose games, puzzles, toys and stuffed animals for their educational value and appeal, not only to children but to adults as well,” explained Holperin. “As a result, many say that my products are a big hit with families. And my customers’ suggestions have helped me expand over the past four years.” Outdoor items such as pogo sticks, stilts, riding toys and scooters are popular in summer. Water toys featured are the ball that bounces on water, the flying disc that sails across the beach and water shooters that boaters can use to ambush other boaters. For rainy days and evenings with family and friends, the store’s game department can please visitors and year-round residents alike. “Some of our new offerings this year include Telestrations, Stratego, Quelf, Electronic Catch Phrase and Beat the Parents,” said Holperin, “These and other new games are added when customers request them. We also specialize in games which are

Customers remember trying out the Jack-in-theBox, pulling the mice out of the stretchy cheese, balancing the eagle on their finger, and trying to solve the giant Rush Hour game challenges. CornerStone fulfills customers’ visions CornerStone Custom Builders Inc. has recently completed its 22nd year supplying custom-built homes varying in style, size and function to fulfill its customers’ visions throughout the North Woods. “We always have prided ourselves on being an innovative business able to adjust to the current trends and desires of our clients,” stated Glenn Schiffmann, president of CornerStone. The most recent trend in the local market, as well as nationally, has been a push to scale back the overall square footage in homes, provide more durable finishes, and utilize greener building products and practices. This summer CornerStone released the CornerStone Cottage Series, a plan booklet dedicated to seven of CornerStone’s most popular cottage floor plans all sharing the same price point of $150,000. Each cottage can be finished turnkey on a lot for this price, or customers can meet individual needs by adding a loft, screen porch, walkout basement or attached garage. “You may find this booklet to be a valuable resource or tool to inspire your ideas as there are no restrictions to the flexibility we can offer in this series, ” confirmed David Cox, vice president of operations. The traditional back-
bone of CornerStone’s business is the custom-built single-family home. “We are uniquely equipped to build the home that matches your lifestyle. Our homes are custom built with unlimited available options,” noted Bruce Stefonek, project manager at the Rhinelander office. “To assist in your design decisions, you are invited to tour one of our eight model homes to spark ideas and generate questions as you start your home-building journey,” offered Jeremy Oberlander, project manager located in Eagle River. “Our model homes are a great tool to use when sitting down in the planning stages. The ability to see a vaulted ceiling, the size of potential room or kitchen layout is invaluable,” stated Eric Klein, project manager at the Minocqua office. CornerStone’s originality allows clients to build from their own home plans or sit down with a talented designer and bring a sketch to reality. “Many of the homes we have built are a mixture of several home plans or a combination of our model home floor plans. We have many options to get you started,” stated Darren Rubo, project manager at the Eagle River office. In keeping the tradition of being a leader in the northern Wisconsin building circles and giving their customers even more op-
tions, CornerStone built their newest model home, the “GreenStone,” a greencertified home at their Minocqua location. More and more clients are requesting a larger percentage of green building materials and products which offer additional energy-saving efficiencies in their new homes. The GreenStone features a totally different look and material selection from the other CornerStone model homes presently displayed. CornerStone has been building “green” for many years and felt it was time to provide their customers with the option to certify their CornerStone home at little or no additional cost. “While some of these products add costs on the front end of the project, the goal is to recapture this initial investment with energy savings over time while being sensitive to the demand placed on our natural resources and the North Woods environment,” stated Steve Schmutzer, project manager in the Minocqua office. To learn more, you are invited to visit with one of the project managers at any of CornerStones’ three locations. The welcome mat is always out for your visit to any of CornerStones’ eight unique model homes. Every location is staffed with a project manager who willbe

St. Germain — A premier destination St. Germain serves visitors and area residents as a premier destination. One might even say the community is “Home of the Authentic Northwoods Experience.” St. Germain offers a host of natural resources, recreational opportunities, dining, lodging and shopping for all seasons. The area’s dense forests are marked by trails of all types, making way for hikers, bikers, snowmobilers, skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts. For a safe and scenic bike ride, try out the 12 miles of paved trail on the St. Germain Bike and Hike Trail. Parking is available behind the St. Germain Chamber of Commerce. This trail is part of the Heart of Vilas Bike Trail and connects the communities of St. Germain, Sayner
and Boulder Junction for almost 27 miles of paved trail riding. Just north of town on Highway 155, the Fern Ridge Trail offers hikers a variety of wildflowers, trees and nonflowering plants, making the trail beautiful during all seasons. The trail is only three-quarters of a mile, but has lots of challenging terrain. Three hiking loops of varied length provide pleasure walking on the Awassa Nature Preserve and Hiking Trail on the west edge of St. Germain. In addition, a halfmile nature trail with a printed interpretive guide is accessible to all, including wheelchair users. The Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club, the largest and one of the most active in the state, has built and maintains more than 100 miles of trails in the St. Germain area. Snowmobile rentals are available within the community.
St. Germain also is home to the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame, where visitors can learn about the history of snowmobile development and racing. Many different snowmobiles from early models to championship sleds are on display. The year-round fishing on dozens of lakes in the St. Germain area is said to be legendary. Vilas County is dotted with more than 1,300 lakes and plenty of streams and rivers. St. Germain offers fishing for everything from crappies to trophy muskies. Canoeing, kayaking and boating opportunities beckon visitors to St. Germain’s many lakes and streams, including the St. Germain River and the Wisconsin River. There are many activities that visitors can take part in while visiting St. Germain. The St. Germain Golf Club, rated 4.5 stars by Golf Digest, is challenging and

fun. The 18-hole public golf course boasts woods and water. There also are a variety of mini golf courses, gocart tracks and horseback riding facilities close to town. When visitors are done enjoying the outdoors, there are plenty of things to see and do in the St. Germain area, including many community events and festivals throughout the year. A flea market is held every Monday through Labor Day from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the community park. Bingo is held every Monday at the community center through August. There is a Farmers Market held every Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the pavilion just west of the chamber of commerce along Highway 70. The Farmers Market runs through Aug. 31. The eighth annual Pig in the Pines Ribfest will be Aug. 2-4. This fun-filled event features award-winning ribs, live music every day, family attractions and an all-around good time.
The Summer’s End Run and Paddle is Sept. 8 and Colorama is Sept. 22. More information on St. Germain’s lodging, attractions, trails and events can be obtained at the St. Germain Chamber of Commerce, located at the corner
of highways 70 and 155 in St. Germain. Look for the big muskie and the statue of Chief St. Germaine. Those interested in learning more can call (715) 477-2205, email info@st-germain.com or visit the website at st-germain.com.
Eighth annual Rib Fest set Thursday to Saturday The eighth annual Pig in the Pines Rib Fest will be held Thursday to Saturday, Aug. 2-4, from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. at St. Germain Community Park, located at highways 70 and 155 in St. Germain. VACATION WEEK
Find delicious traditions, family dining at Big Rob’s Loose Moose Pub & Grill Formerly Tia Juana Supper Club, Big Rob’s Loose Moose Pub & Grill in Land O’ Lakes has expanded in the last nine years to serve delicious North Woods favorites to diners in a family atmosphere. Owner Rob “Big Rob” Andersen prides himself on having a family-friendly restaurant. “It’s a family restaurant and a supper club — a little bit of everything,” said Big Rob. The interior of the restaurant has been brightened by the addition of large windows, according to Andersen. The restaurant has two dining rooms. The parking lot also has been enlarged. But even with a new look, Loose Moose continues to serve favorites like barbecued ribs — formerly the house specialty at Tia Juana. Diners can choose from chewy or fall-off-thebone ribs, which are lightly smoked and seasoned with Big Rob’s own sauce. Few restaurants offer an all-you-can-eat fish fry every night, but Loose Moose is an exception. The nightly fish fry includes soup or salad, choice of potato and rye bread, along with baked beans and coleslaw. The restaurant also offers an all-you-caneat shrimp boil. Potato choices include Moose fries, Boston wedges, baked potato or garlic mashed; vegetables or rice also are offered. Diners can choose walleye, panfish or poor man’s lobster as their entrée of choice. All are served with soup and salad, and choice of potato. Also available is roast duck on a bed of rice pilaf served with Rose’s black cherry and burgundy sauce. This entrée comes with soup and salad. Loose Moose offers a large array of deluxe sandwiches and appetizing basket meals, such as the barbecued pulled-pork sandwich, grilled chicken sandwich, black angus hamburgers, coconut shrimp, deluxe butterfly shrimp, chicken strips

Challenging golf course found at Big Sand Lake Overlooking Smoky Lake, Big Sand Lake Golf Course in Phelps is one of the oldest golf courses in northern Wisconsin. According to superintendent Jim Burton, it’s one of the most peaceful, yet challenging courses in the area. Big Sand Lake Golf Course was founded in 1928 by the Eagle River Fish and Game Club. The clubhouse building was originally a horse barn, donated to the golf club by Charles V. Barrett Sr. in 1930. The barn was moved
to its current location and remodeled. Today, the course is cared for by Burton, who has managed the course for many years. The course is relatively flat and has no water, but according to golf course staff, it is far from easy. Sand traps, small greens, hole positions, doglegs and trees make the course challenging enough to keep players of all abilities on top of their game. Vacationers and local residents from the sur-
rounding communities of Eagle River, Land O’ Lakes and Iron River, Mich., come to test their skills at Big Sand Lake. To traverse this 3,085yard, par-36 course, golf carts and pull carts are available for rent. Rates are $2.50 for pull carts and $15 for motor carts. Quality clubs also may be rented. Snacks, soda and beer are offered to golfers in the clubhouse. The course is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. No tee times are required.
Nine holes cost $15 on weekdays and $18 Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Twilight rates are featured after 4:30 every day. Twilight golf is $11 weekdays and $14 Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Visa, MasterCard and Discover are all accepted. Big Sand Lake Golf Course is located seven miles east of Phelps on Big Sand Lake Club Road off of Highway 17. Call (715) 545-2484 for more information.
