Land O’ Lakes offers sports, activities for every season Land O’ Lakes, located 18 miles north of Eagle River, exemplifies the area as the capital of silent sports in Wisconsin. Located on the border of Wisconsin and Michigan, the town was originally named Stateline. Land O’ Lakes celebrated its 100year anniversary in 2007. The Land O’ Lakes area offers lots of year-round activities as well as special events. Starting just a few miles west of Land O’ Lakes is the Cisco Chain. The chain is made up of 15 lakes with more than 271 miles of shoreline. The lakes are dotted with islands suitable for
exploring and picnicking. The spring-fed waters offer excellent fishing for walleye, northern pike, muskie, bass and panfish. The current state-record muskie was caught on Thousand Island Lake in 1980. For those who prefer to stay on land, Land O’ Lakes offers miles of hiking and biking trails. There is a 7.5-mile paved bike path heading west along Highway B out of Land O’ Lakes. The path is 10 feet wide and goes right through downtown. Downtown offers shopping as well as great places to relax and enjoy drinks
and a meal. Land O’ Lakes only gets better in the winter. The trails that were used for hiking and biking can be used for cross-country skiing. Downhill skiing is available throughout the area, including the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Snowmobile trails open as well. These trails are free to ride and maintained by non-profit organizations for the purpose of providing recreation for visitors to the beautiful North Woods. Snowmobile safety courses will be offered this winter by the Frosty Snowmobile Club for those who have
never snowmobiled before or for children looking to drive for the first time. Trails extend out in all directions from Land O’ Lakes and reach Eagle River, Boulder Junction, Phelps, Watersmeet, Mich., and cross the Cisco Chain. There are many chamber and organization-sponsored events scheduled throughout the year. For more information and a more comprehensive list of events in the Land O’ Lakes area, call the chamber at 1-(800) 236-3432 or locally at (715) 547-3432. Recently, the Small Business Institute/Small Business Administration/UW System conducted anonymous independent surveys of pizza customers of the 11 major pizza restaurants in the Eagle River area. The survey considered quality of food, cleanliness, service and atmosphere. Alexander’s Family Pizza was rated #1! “Out of 11 restaurants mentioned — Alexander’s was ranked number 1,” an independent was second, and a national chain was third, “both far behind in customer choice.” Alexander’s was found to “offer a quality product at a reasonable price. According to the survey, quality has proven to be of more importance to the customer. Alexander’s has excellent pizza. It uses the highest quality ingredients.” Alexander’s Family Pizza wishes to thank all the many people who participated in the surveys. We truly appreciate the fact that our long-term goal of wanting to be known for quality pizza has been realized.

Beauty, challenging holes found at Eagle River Golf course Eagle River Golf Course is famous for its playing conditions, challenging layout and North Woods beauty. It is open to the public for everyone to enjoy. When golfers play at Eagle River Golf Course, they often are playing on the best course conditions available in the North Woods. “Many of our customers rave every year about the overall playing conditions they experience at our facility. We take pride in giving the golfers a playing surface that is consistent with our four-star rating we receive every year from Golf Digest’s Best Places to Play,” said Brad Missling, the club’s PGA golf professional. Golf Digest has given Eagle River Golf Course a four-star rating 10 years in a row. The customers playing the course are the people responsible for the rating the course receives. “This rating reflects the value and awesome experience of playing at the Eagle River Golf Course,” said Missling. Eagle River Golf Course offers some of the most affordable rates of any fourstar rated golf course in the North Woods. Players can rest assured they are getting great value when they choose to golf at Eagle River Golf Course. Undulating greens and narrow fairways keep the course challenging. The practice area represents what customers should expect from a course with a four-star rating. A new putting and chipping green was built five years ago, a huge improvement for those who wish to practice all aspects of their short game. For golfers to practice their greenside sand game, a practice greenside bunker is featured. The driving range boasts three levels of teeing surface with target greens and yardage signs. Offering four sets of tees, the course is enjoyable to all skill levels. The newly added

gold tees have become popular with senior golfers. Many of the course’s holes are carved out of mature trees, reminding visitors why they love to golf in the North Woods area. The abundance of wildlife is another unique characteristic of the course. Whitetailed deer make the course their home, red fox are spotted frequently and every spring the mallards take to the water on the course. “Trees, water hazards and rolling hills have made the course into one of the most popular courses in northern Wisconsin,” Missling said. The fun can continue after a round of golf. The clubhouse offers a friendly atmosphere to enjoy food, drinks and snacks. Large groups are welcome. The restaurant seats more than 100 people, and the outdoor patio is a popular spot to relax. The restaurant overlooks the scenic course. Equipment from the best vendors in the industry is offered in the pro shop. Men’s club lines for sale are from Callaway, Titleist, Cobra, Ping, Taylor Made, Adams and Cleveland. Ladies’ lines carried are Antigua, Adidas, Annika, Nike, Sun Mountain, Gear and Cutter & Buck. “We carry a wider selection of ladies’ clothes than any other course in the area. If we don’t have an item you want, in most cases, we can special order it for you and have it shipped to your front door,” said Missling. Eagle River Golf Course has two certified professionals on staff, PGA professional Brad Missling and Director of Golf Instruction Jeff Symmonds. Both are trained, qualified instructors to help golfers improve all parts of their game. Individual lessons are offered; group clinics and golf schools also are offered. Pricing information for lessons and golf schools can be viewed at eaglerivergolf course.com. Back again this year is the customer appreciation card. For every full-price 18hole round golfers purchase, they will receive a stamp on their card. Once the card has been stamped five times, they receive a free round of golf with the rental of a golf cart. During the peak season, June 15 through Aug. 12, nine-hole green fees are $25
and 18-hole green fees are $39. Twilight rates start approximately five hours before dark and are $15. Cart fees during the peak season are $11 for nine holes, $16 for 18 holes and $11 for twilight; all cart fees are per person. Tee times are taken 30 days in advance; if there are 12 or more players, advance booking options are available. Online tee times are available which allows golfers the ability to book their tee times anytime of the day from their computer at eaglerivergolfcourse.com. A midweek golf special, which includes 18 holes with cart for $35, is available on select Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The special is available July 10 and 11, and July 18 and 19. Gifts and art found at Trading Post stores From fine clothing to handsome Navajo rugs, from exquisite silver and turquoise Native American jewelry to Depression glass, from children’s books to antique Skookum dolls, the two Trading Post stores in downtown Land O’ Lakes boast an amazing mix of memorable merchandise, according to owner Barb Nehring. Trading Post Internationale and Trading Post Antiques, side-by-side stores in downtown Land O’ Lakes, have been “must see” attractions for Land O’ Lakes residents and visitors. Trading Post Internationale is celebrating its
68th year, while Trading Post Antiques is more than 21 years old. Owners Harold and Barbara Nehring, who, in 1964, took over the original business started by Harold’s family, have expert knowledge of their wares and offer friendly and personal service to customers. Throughout both stores, visitors will find the widest selection of authentic handwoven Navajo rugs in the area, including rare turn-ofthe-century masterpieces. Like the older rugs, the new Navajo rugs are examples of the highest-quality Navajo weavings. Both old and new, for the floor or for the wall, the rugs can be the perfect

accessories for rustic North Woods homes or sophisticated city dwellings. Native American art enthusiasts will find a selection of handmade Ojibwe (Chippewa) woodland Indian beadwork and quillwork, including porcupine quill boxes in a wide variety. These boxes, made of birch bark and sweet grass, are decorated with natural and dyed porcupine quills. Unique to the woodland tribes, they are rare due to a decreasing number of Native American artists able to invest the time to make them. Trading Post Internationale also features clothing and moccasins for men, women and children. Handmade Native American moccasins sit comfortably beside popular Minnetonka moccasins. Woolrich for men, women and children is a prominent name in the clothing department. Escargot and Tasha Polizi are two unique lines for women. Hartstrings, Kitestrings, Hatley and Purple Mountain add to the growing children’s department, which includes a carefully selected group of toys and books geared to nature and Native American appreciation. On the traditional side, Trading Post Internationale has a selection of elegant gifts, such as Bohemian ruby glass, Royal Doulton and Hummel figurines and crystal. These items join North Woods decorative accessories such as Native American-made birch-bark mirrors, lamps, dream catchers, and distinctive antler wall hangings by Wisconsin artist Dave Stencil. Smith also are part of the Trading Post jewelry mix. A quick visit to Trading Post Antiques next door reveals a world of antiques, plus more Native American decorative arts such as Ojibwe birchbark and Winnebago black-ash baskets. Antiques include majolica, Depression glass, oil lamps, kitchenware, pottery, paintings, clocks, Jim Beam bottles, primitive and Victorian furniture, wicker, duck and fish decoys, railroad items and Oriental rugs. Trading Post Antiques also has Indian “Skookum” dolls in its comprehensive collection of handmade items celebrating Native American heritage. “These dolls, sold as souvenirs from the early 1920s to the early 1950s, have become highly sought after. Each one is hand-painted and uniquely dressed. It is rare to find so many in one place,” said Nehring. Both Trading Post Internationale and Trading Post Antiques house a variety of Hopi and Navajo kachina dolls, hand-carved from cottonwood tree roots and then hand painted. Each represents a special spirit, which connects mankind to the
gods in the Southwest Native American tradition. Trading Post Antiques also carries handmade Taos and Cochiti Indian drums and lamps with deerskin shades. The hides are hand cured and the drums are carved out of cottonwood. Drums and lampshades are then hand painted by the Pueblo artists. VACATION WEEK

Family fun thru mini golf provided at Eagle Falls Eagle Falls Adventure Golf is owned and operated by Mark and Karen Cropsey and their children, Zach and Emily, of St. Germain. They have been in the area 14 years, managing vacation properties and rentals. Eagle Falls, located in Eagle River, is in its sixth season. Construction for a new laser tag arena will begin fall 2013. The theme of the course is a 1950s fishing camp. Golfers putt their way around a fishing cabin, a bait shop and a fishing dock. “We wanted to create a mini golf course that was challenging and interactive,” said Mark Cropsey. Golfers can make several choices throughout the course. For example, they can cross the river by bridge or stepping stones, descend the ranger tower by stairs or slide, and many holes have multiple options for play. The Cropseys are always working hard to change and improve the course. The landscaping is constantly maintained and updated to keep the course fresh and
exciting for the golfers. “People discover something new each time they come to the course,” said Mark Cropsey. If you look close, hole No. 5 is in the shape of a giant muskie where you tee off at the tail and putt past the fin rock formations. The muskie’s eye is the cup. “We wanted to build a course that was different from the normal mini golf course,” said Karen Cropsey. “Something symbolic was needed to highlight the area. Therefore, the main rock formation and waterfall features an eagle’s head.” In addition to the cascading waterfalls, the course also includes lakes, rivers and fountains. “We wanted the water features to really stand out,” explained Mark Cropsey. “The course has 20,000 gallons of water.” This year players will see water trickling down the new water tower feature by hole’s No. 1 and No. 2 into a nearby pond. Also featured is a yellow canoe planted full of beauti-
ful flowers along the side of the course. After finishing a round, golfers have the chance to win a free game on the 18th hole, humorously called “Nature Calls.” The hole features a talking outhouse that has become a fun feature of the course. The outhouse comments on golfers’ shots and then flushes if a free game is won. Any free passes given by Eagle Falls will never expire, so customers can use them at their own convenience. Eagle Falls Adventure Golf offers discounts to camps, clubs and large groups. When golfing with a group of four or more, receive $1 off each golfer in the group. Complimentary coupons may be found at local businesses and on the back of all Vacation Week issues. The coupons are not available at the course. The course, located at 1040 E. Pine Street in Eagle River is open every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. weather permitting. For more information, call (715) 477-0808.

Native American jewelry, crafts intrigue shoppers at Pink Coyote For a unique shopping experience and one-of-akind Native American jewelry, stop at Pink Coyote in Eagle River. Visitors will hear Native American music as they peruse the vast assortment of necklaces, pendants, bracelets, earrings and rings, all crafted by Native American tribes from around the country. Some of the tribes represented are the Navajo, Zuni and Hopi, each possessing its own distinctive culture and style. Turquoise, onyx, opals, coral, mother of pearl, spiny oyster, jasper and amber are found encased in silver and precious metals. Owner John LaBelle has more than 27 years of experience in the Native American arts business. He personally handpicks each art piece placed on the shelves. LaBelle offers his services and friendly advice to customers, and many times shares the history of his pieces. Presentation of the jewelry is reminiscent of an art gallery. “Jewelry is a wearable art form,” said LaBelle. He also said with pride that all the jewelry in the store is American made. Along with gemstones, Pink Coyote showcases traditional bead and stone jewelry, pottery, peace pipes, dream catchers and kachina dolls. These dolls, originally used for teaching Native American children about their gods, are interesting conversation pieces in any home. Crafted from the roots of a cottonwood tree, these brightly colored sculptures speak volumes about Native American culture as well as customers’ experiences in Eagle River. Pink Coyote is the North Woods link to authentic Native American culture, crafts and precious gemstones. Pink Coyote is located at 212 E. Wall St., next to

Pitlik’s Polish Regatta set Aug. 11 on Sand Lake The Polish Regatta will be held rain or shine at Pitlik’s Sand Beach Resort on Sand Lake Saturday, Aug. 11, at 1 p.m. “This event is by far one of the most humorous you’ll ever attend, and it’s all about getting people together for a day of laughter, something we probably don’t do enough,” said Gary Pitlik, captain and emcee of this year's event. The event will start with four land-challenge events. Teams dressed in costumes compete to determine their poll position on the starting lineup for the homemade human-powered
boat race, the main attraction at the event. During the national anthem prior to the championship race, “The best Polish flyover yet will take place as the green flag drops,” assures Pitlik. This year’s theme is “Holidays,” and contestants must dress in costumes and decorate their boats celebrating any holiday found in the calendar year. Brats, burgers and Pitlik’s parsleyed-buttered potatoes will be served all day. For team registration and rules or for more information, contact (715) 4794955 or polishregatta.

An independent nonprofit facility funded entirely by donations, memberships and memorials, the Vilas County Historical Museum is home to more than 48,000 memorabilia items. History-seeking guests have been visiting the museum for more than 50 years. Doors were opened Aug. 16, 1959, and have remained open every season since. The extensive collection of the museum features everything from area wildlife to furniture and clothing. The museum hosts an array of military items including uniforms, medals

A large display of antique dolls, including Little Red Riding Hood, Shirley Temple, characters from “The Wizard of Oz” and Mary Poppins dolls, as well as a variety of bridal dolls, are just part of the compilation that can be found. There also is a Queen Elizabeth II doll which was created for the queen’s coronation. A popular attraction of the museum is the collection of snowmobiles, which showcases the world’s first snowmobile. The animal and bird room features a large collection of African animals col-
lected by the late Jim Froelich, a big-game hunter from the Sayner area. A zebra, wildebeest, springbok and warthog are just a few animal mounts on display. The museum gift shop offers books and flyers on the North Woods and also features books by North Woods authors. Postcards, T-shirts and replicas of early toys and items found in the museum are available for purchase. The museum will hold its annual chicken dinner Saturday, Aug. 11 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Sayner Community Building and pavilion. Tickets for this dinner go on sale July 13. Each ticket costs $10. Obtain tickets by stopping in the museum or send a check to Vilas County

Alexander’s Pizza brings tradition to your table More than 38 years ago, two brothers came to the North Woods seeking summer jobs. Rooted in a strong Italian community in Chicago, pizza was the staple at home and at college. Seeing a lack of pizzerias in the area, the brothers realized a great opportunity existed and opened their own pizzeria in Eagle River. Sources say the locals at the time looked down on them and called them brash boys from “Chi-town.” Today, the pizzeria has become a landmark. Customers come from all over the country to taste the best pizza in the area. Even celebrities have visited Alexander’s on occasion, including professional football players; head coaches from the NFL, NBA and NCAA; hockey players; movie stars; movie critics; national sports commentators; leaders of U.S. industries; newscasters; and authors. A visiting film critic even gave Alexander’s a “thumbs up.” Although the business opened many years ago, one thing remains the same — the traditional method of making pizza at Alexander’s. The pizza is made the way Grandma Del Cristo said — use the best to make the best. The ingredients used are only the finest, which the owners ensure. The cheese used is 100% full-cream mozzarella, which is straight from the most award-winning dairy in Wis-
consin, along with 9-monthaged Romano. The soul of a pizza is the crust, which is made with high-gluten flour. Adding flavor to the pizza is the thick, rich sauce created from tomato puree from pear tomatoes — the meatiest of tomatoes. The meat also is very lean, at 90% lean meat, with no soy fillers. For the more adventurous pizza connoisseurs, Alexander’s offers broccoli, shrimp, albacore and pineapple to create original gourmet pizzas. Diners also can try a delicious oven-roasted cheese bread appetizer — one-half loaf of freshly baked French bread, basted with butter, seasoned with garlic and aged Romano, covered with mozzarella, roasted to a honey-golden brown and lightly sprinkled with oregano. As one would say in Italian, “Qui si mangia sempre bene!” (Here one always eats well!) Employees at Alexander’s Pizza have hailed from various cities and countries around the globe. Exchange students from Hungary, England, Spain, Scotland, Lithuania, Jamaica, Poland,
Belarus and the Czech Republic have made the trip across the Atlantic to work at Alexander’s Pizza. Alexander’s success is due to the quality put into each pizza. The dough is homemade and triple-raised while the crusts are rolled with care. The delicious taste of fresh butter is found in every bite of crust as well. Pizza is not the only item on the menu made with care and dedication. Savory sandwiches are made to order with toasted French bread, creamy mozzarella, California tomato sauce and your choice of ham, Italian sausage or meatballs, and any of your favorite pizza toppings. Alexander’s has a full assortment of arcade games, such as pinball, video games and several pool and foosball tables. It’s a great place to host birthday parties. Alexander’s Pizza is located in downtown Eagle River on Railroad Street. Parking is available across the street. Customers can dine in or carry out, and can call ahead to have the pizza ready when they arrive. To enjoy the “best pizza in the North,” call (715) 4797363.
Alexander’s Pizza in Eagle River has become a favorite of many people in the North Woods. They have perfected making a pizza
the traditional way on a 150-pound stone deck and pride themselves on doing so for the past 38 years.

Casual dining, lake views featured at Club 45 Located on Denton Lake in Conover, Club 45 Sports Bar and Grill provides relaxed lakeside dining. Nicknamed the “House of Payne,” the bar and grill offers great food and drinks at affordable prices. With an outdoor deck offering seating and views of the lake, visitors frequently see wildlife, including deer and moose. Owners Dave and Jen Payne have owned the establishment since 1999. Raising three children, the Paynes keep the environment family friendly, and offer games for children and an outdoor playground. According to the owners, the bar dates back to the 1920s. Retaining much of its history, the establishment is a true North Woods bar. Dave’s grandfather started his own restaurant in Chicago, Ill., which catered to celebrities such as Lucille Ball. Dave uses many of his grandfather’s recipes at Club 45. The full menu includes appetizers such as coconut shrimp and breaded mushrooms. Large, fresh salads feature spinach and romaine lettuce. All dressings are homemade, including the secret Caesar salad dress-

Forest Lake’s beer and wine make it destination location Nestled in the woods along Highway B is Forest Lake Country Store in Land O’ Lakes. The unassuming store sneaks up on drivers. Many are surprised by the unique shopping and dining experience inside. The noticeable wine selection hosts 150 boutique labels such as Chateau Ste. Michelle, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellar, Rombauer, Caymus, Decoy and more. Obscure labels can be found by those who want to try something new. Bottles can be brought to the table, corked and served with crystal glassware. More than 130 craft beers are offered in the beer selection. Sprecher, Leinenkugel’s, Oomengang, Southern Tier, Lakeside and Bell’s Brewing, Lagunita’s and other craft brewers are available. Guests may have a beer with their meal, or mix a sixpack to take home for a private tasting party. The shelves are filled with many other unique and tasty treats. Forty artisan cheese from Carr Valley, Sartori, Widmers and more are carried. Find Amish jams, Wisconsin salsas and rare grains like lemon orzo, Israeli couscous, quinoa, Black Japonica rice, organic amaranth, freekah and teff.
Forest Lake Country Store offers more than 250 wine and craft beer selections, giving guests plenty of options for their meal or private party.
Visitors also will enjoy the comfortable dining experience Forest Lake offers. “The quaint dining area reminds you of sitting in your best friend’s kitchen. Neither too big nor too small, it’s the perfect size for casual dining,” said owner Mark Gostisha. A sense of camaraderie is seen, with guests talking among themselves or chatting from table to table. The country store’s menu is casual. Breakfast features large fluffy omelets, french toast with real Wisconsin maple syrup and eggs served with toasted homemade bread. Lunch and dinner boast of special items such as
handcrafted panini sandwiches and signature salads. A popular evening attraction is Kris’ handmade pizza. The dough is made from scratch and is not rolled until an order is placed. The sauce is created on-site and the toppings are piled high on each pie. Customers frequently say the pizza is the best they have tasted north of Chicago, according to Gostisha. For those who want to keep in touch, a general-interest, monthly newsletter is offered. New products are introduced and store events and Vilas County events are announced. A wine-only newsletter is available, with new wine in-
troductions, special offers and introductory prices. Customers can send in an order and pick up their wines a couple of days later. Visitors won’t want to miss the exciting Ride with Leinie biking event Saturday, Aug. 11. Dick and Jean Leinenkugel will lead the bicycle ride, returning to Forest Lake Country Store at noon. The $25 registration fee includes a tasting of eight beers, a brat lunch and a raffle ticket for the 16-foot Leinenkugel canoe. All proceeds will benefit the construction of the 40mile bicycle trail in Land O’ Lakes. More information can be found at wilderness lakestrails.org. After the Ride with Leinie, Marquette University student Sarah Lauer will perform. Lauer plays coffee shop-type music with her guitar, banjo and harmonica. Forest Lake Country Store is located at 6256 Highway B. “The store may be a little hard to find, but once you are here, you won’t want to leave,” says Gostisha. Take the drive about seven miles west of Land O’ Lakes to Forest Lake Country Store. Visitors will understand why the slogan is “serving great food and a whole lot more.”

Memories made at Lick-a-dee Splitz “When I go to Lick-a-dee Splitz, I feel like dancing!” That’s how one young patron described his experience at the Three Lakes ice cream shop. “To me,” said owner Denise Kerns, “that speaks as highly of us as a five-star review. Our top-quality products make me proud, but the staff and the atmosphere are what it’s really all about.” At Lick-a-dee Splitz in the heart of downtown Three Lakes, every customer is greeted with a smile and a genuine desire to make each trip a happy memory. From the music played to the cheerful, unique décor and the friendly staff, everything at Licka-dee Splitz says, “Good times happen here!” Patrons can select from 28-plus flavors of ice cream, a dozen or so varieties of fudge made right on the premises and sampled freely, and an impressive array of chocolates. Ice cream cakes and pies are custom made for any special event. Also featured are novelty and nostalgic candies, toys, gifts and more. To quench any thirst, try the fresh-squeezed lemonade, an all-natural fruit smoothie or one of the classic glass-bottled soft drinks. Up for a challenge? Then the Bidonkadonk is for you! This massive sundae, comprised of 12 scoops of ice cream and four toppings plus whipped cream, nuts and cherries was originally intended as a family-sized treat, but each year dozens of people of all ages conquer the giant treat on their own. “I don’t recommend it,” said Kerns, “but it’s like a

Sassy Cow is available in delicious flavor combinations such as orange-chocolate, ginger-pear or peanut butter and banana, to name a few. Lick-a-dee Splitz ice cream and treat shop is located right next to the newly renovated Three Lakes Cen-
ter for the Arts and across the street from the landmark Black Forest restaurant. Many patrons of the theater and restaurant stop into Lick-a-dee Splitz after dinner or a movie to extend their evening out. The comfortable, spacious deck is a perfect setting to end a summer’s eve in the North Woods. Summer hours are from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. For more information, call (715) 546-8285.
