Northernaire resort offers luxurious lakefront villas, condos in Three Lakes For a relaxed vacation destination with that rustic appeal, look no further than Northernaire’s luxurious villas and condominiums in Three Lakes. At the gateway of the North Woods, more specifically the ChequamegonNicolet National Forest, Northernaire showcases all that nature has to offer in the Nicolet — scenic bicycling, hiking, camping, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and world-class snowmobiling are a few of the activities to enjoy. Just a short drive from the Northernaire into Three Lakes, you will find an oldfashioned yet inviting town full of shopping, dining and arts. Many nearby towns, including Eagle River and Minocqua, offer extensive shopping and dining opportunities. Nearly everything you’ll want or need can easily be found in the Three Lakes area. Northernaire’s greatest feature is the world’s largest freshwater Chain of Lakes at your fingertips. The Chain consists of 28 lakes, 20 of which are easily accessible from the docks on Deer Lake and have a surface area of 7,626 acres, with 106 miles of shoreline. These lakes are home to 16 varieties of fish. Some lakes are secluded in the Nicolet National Forest, and all vary in size. They offer everything from water sports to canoeing to fishing. Northernaire offers all the luxuries of the North Woods in their condominiums and villas. Deluxe condominium units are constructed with maple hardwood floors, solid hardwood doors and trim, granite countertops, gas fireplaces and outdoor patios. Some units include tubs with ceramic surrounds, jetted tubs, lofts, arched doorways and various interior packages. Buyers will want to act quickly as only four condominiums are left for purchase. As 35 of the 39 condominiums have sold, Norther-

Anyone interested in items from the wheel-and-deal section simply barters the price with the ERRA representative working that area. “The wheel-and-deal section is a lot of fun for the shoppers and the barterers,” said ERRA President Bob McDonald. The children’s section also will be run as a wheeland-deal area, with items intended for children. Another corner of the arena will have hundreds of books for sale. The antiques section will be run by an ERRA representative and will be open both nights. The ERRA is a nonprofit organization which provides skating opportunities for area youths and adults. Anyone interested in donating items can phone the ERRA at (715) 479-4858.
Area communities set events The North Woods is recognized across the Midwest as a summer recreation paradise, offering boating, fishing, golfing, hiking, camping and water sports of all kinds. Besides the many recreational activities, most communities and nonprofit organizations in Vilas and Oneida counties plan family-oriented events for residents and vacationers alike during the summer months. The activities range from art, antique and quilt shows to summer festivals, powwows and fishing tournaments. Most of the events include fun for all ages, plus plenty of food and refreshments. The following list of summer activities was compiled by the Vilas County Advertising Department. See more detailed stories in this publication or the Vilas County News-Review as the event approaches, or check with local information bureaus for more details (dates and

Recently, the Small Business Institute/Small Business Administration/UW System conducted anonymous independent surveys of pizza customers of the 11 major pizza restaurants in the Eagle River area. The survey considered quality of food, cleanliness, service and atmosphere. Alexander’s Family Pizza was rated #1! “Out of 11 restaurants mentioned — Alexander’s was ranked number 1,” an independent was second, and a national chain was third, “both far behind in customer choice.” Alexander’s was found to “offer a quality product at a reasonable price. According to the survey, quality has proven to be of more importance to the customer. Alexander’s has excellent pizza. It uses the highest quality ingredients.” Alexander’s Family Pizza wishes to thank all the many people who participated in the surveys. We truly appreciate the fact that our long-term goal of wanting to be known for quality pizza has been realized.

Tribute brewery, taphouse brings craft beer to Eagle River It’s a great time to be a beer lover with the opening of Tribute Brewing Co. and Tribute Brewing Co. Taphouse in Eagle River. Located at 1106 N. Bluebird Road, Tribute Brewing Co. will begin brewing its first batch of beer this summer. Co-owner and brewmaster Marc O’Brien, who has been homebrewing for 16 years, plans to brew his award-winning recipes on a much larger scale, using the same techniques to create high-quality, freshly brewed beer. “As a homebrewer, I’ve brewed 10-gallon batches at a time,” said O’Brien. “Now I’ll adjust my recipes to brew seven barrels at a time, equaling approximately 217 gallons of beer. I want to make beers that everyone would enjoy drinking.” O’Brien will brew with equipment previously used by O’So Brewing Company

in Plover and Lazy Monk in Eau Claire. Co-owner Bill Summers said many great beers have
passed through that equipment and he expects many more to follow. “Marc is a very talented
brewer and has won many awards on local and regional levels,” said Summers. “He really puts his heart into brewing great beer. I think visitors will be impressed with the variety of beer styles he is capable of producing on a high level.” While the brewery waits for its pending brewing license approval, Tribute Brewing Co. Taphouse has opened its doors and has been pouring guests beer from other Wisconsin craft breweries. “We visited three major craft beer hotspots, Asheville, N.C., Austin, Texas, and Fort Collins, Colo., to find the latest trends in the craft brewing industry,” Summers said. “We think the relaxed atmosphere we’ve created will offer beer lovers something unique to the area.” Tribute Taphouse is open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 4 to 9 p.m. and noon to 3 p.m. Sundays.

Visit Lake Forest ‘fore’ golf tradition Lake Forest Golf Club has a rich tradition of providing challenging holes, friendly service and knowledgeable golf professionals to vacationers and local residents. The beautiful North Woods scenery of the historical course makes Lake Forest Golf Club a wonderful place to enhance your summer fun. “You can come by land or by sea,” golf pro Rick “Pepper” Freund said, referring to the course’s location on the Chain of Lakes. The course can be accessed by boat on the channel between Voyageur and Eagle lakes. Guests are
welcome to stop by for a game of golf or enjoy food and drinks at the clubhouse. The romantic history of golf at Lake Forest dates back more than 95 years. In 1917, a small group of wealthy “regulars” selected a wooded and hilly farm site with frontage on two lakes and established what was called Eagle Waters Golf Club. They carved a nine-hole golf course from the wooded hills and built a clubhouse. Eagle Waters Golf Club was private and catered to the elite group of cottage owners in the Everett Colony between Catfish

and Cranberry lakes. Through the years, the golf club has entertained the rich and famous. On some days, as many as 100 caddies served the club and its members. While the rest of the country struggled through the Great Depression, the driveways of local estates sported Fleetwoods, Rolls Royces and Cords. Bets of $1,000 per hole were not unusual. Many famous golfers played the course — Walter Hogan, Ollie Meyers and José Hurado, the South American golf champion. In the 1950s, President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his brother, Milton, also were frequent visitors. When Jim Mason purchased Eagle Waters Golf Club in 1963, he built the first four units of Lake Forest Resort. Today, Lake Forest Resort offers golf, tennis, a fitness center and nature trails to guests and the public. The nine-hole golf course winds through the hilly greens and provides tee times from 7 a.m. daily until 6 p.m. This fully irrigated, par36 golf course is 3,000 yards long. Amenities at the golf course include a clubhouse, a fully equipped pro shop,
practice green, gas carts and push carts, rental clubs, and yearly and corporate memberships. Freund offers individual lessons. There also are weekly specials on merchandise at the pro shop. Seniors can receive discounted greens fees seven days a week. Other specials include Sweetheart days Saturdays and Sundays, when couples can play for $24 after 2 p.m. Lake Forest also offers individual 10-play passes. The pass costs $140 for 10 nine-hole rounds and the 11th game is free. The clubhouse serves a full menu of sandwiches, brats and burgers, starting at 11 a.m. Deck and dance parties are held every Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m., featuring live entertainment, weather permitting. The bartenders also can make your favorite drinks, including their famous Bloody Marys. Food and beverage must be ordered at the bar, but guests are welcome to sit at the tables outside or in the clubhouse. If golfers would like more information about golfing at Lake Forest, Freund can be reached at (715) 479-4211. In addition to the golf course, Lake Forest Recreation Area has a health and

Stephan creates elegant jewelry Lehner-Stephan Jewelers in downtown Eagle River has 67 years of experience and the knowledge to create and repair fine-quality jewelry, clocks and watches. The business was founded by Al Lehner in 1945. At that time, the store was devoted to making and repairing watches and clocks. The current owner and nephew of Lehner, Mike Stephan, had visited his uncle frequently over the years. He was attending college at UW-Oshkosh when he learned of his uncle’s wish for one of his nephews to take over his business. Two years later in 1978, Mike Stephan enrolled at Milwaukee Area Technical College for watchmaking and jewelry design with the intention of meeting his uncle’s wishes. In 1980, Stephan found himself the new owner of his uncle’s store, but was soon left to learn the rest of the business world by himself, as his uncle died shortly thereafter. Now in 2012, Stephan boasts more than 32 years of experience as a certified master jewelry designer and watchmaker. Stephan is driven by his passion for improving jewelry and the gratification he receives upon creating quality pieces for customers. As an artist, Stephan gravitates toward natural designs, drawing inspiration from pinecones, acorns, deer and the multitude of wildlife he experiences in the North Woods on a daily basis. While Stephan possesses a unique style, this is not the extent of his craft. His vast portfolio ranges from natural shapes to elegant and modern designs. “Simple elegance will always be in,” said Stephan. Stephan’s custom-made pieces feature a variety of materials, including rare elk’s teeth. Stephan explained that two teeth in every elk’s mouth are made of ivory. These teeth are gathered and hand carved for earrings, pendants, bracelets and necklaces. Stephan went on to ex-

Many customers take their jewelry to Stephan to transform into new, one-ofa-kind pieces. Lehner-Stephan Jewelers sells a large selection of fine watches, rings, engagement rings, bracelets, charms, earrings, pendants and other fine jewelry. Popular items include Bavano enameled wall art. If the store doesn’t have what you’re looking for, Stephan can find it. “We can get anything that anybody wants,” explained Stephan. “I shop for people.” His network of suppliers and craftsmen help hunt down whatever a customer desires. Visitors won’t need to worry about price. LehnerStephan uses the same suppliers as chain stores, allowing Stephan to compete with any price. However, Stephan offers a quality piece that has been looked over and cared for by a true artisan. “Customers know that we really care and that we have the knowledge and

It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. The store can also be reached by phone at (715) 479-4520 or on the website at michaelseaglegold.com.

Alexander’s Pizza brings tradition to your table More than 38 years ago, two brothers came to the North Woods seeking summer jobs. Rooted in a strong Italian community in Chicago, pizza was the staple at home and at college. Seeing a lack of pizzerias in the area, the brothers realized a great opportunity existed and opened their own pizzeria in Eagle River. Sources say the locals at the time looked down on them and called them brash boys from “Chitown.” Today, the pizzeria has become a landmark. Customers come from all over the country to taste the best pizza in the area. Even celebrities have visited Alexander’s on occasion, including professional football players; head coaches from the NFL, NBA and NCAA; hockey players; movie stars; movie critics; national sports commentators; leaders of U.S. industries; newscasters; and authors. A visiting film critic even gave Alexander’s a “thumbs up.” Although the business opened many years ago, one thing remains the same — the traditional method of making pizza at Alexander’s. The pizza is made the way Grandma Del Cristo said — use the best to make the best. The ingredients used are only the finest, which the owners ensure. The cheese used is 100% fullcream mozzarella, which is
straight from the most award-winning dairy in Wisconsin, along with 9month-aged Romano. The soul of a pizza is the crust, which is made with high-gluten flour. Adding flavor to the pizza is the thick, rich sauce created from tomato puree from pear tomatoes — the meatiest of tomatoes. The meat also is very lean, at 90% lean meat, with no soy fillers. For the more adventurous pizza connoisseurs, Alexander’s offers broccoli, shrimp, albacore and pineapple to create original gourmet pizzas. Diners also can try a delicious oven-roasted cheese bread appetizer — one-half loaf of freshly baked French bread, basted with butter, seasoned with garlic and aged Romano, covered with mozzarella, roasted to a honey-golden brown and lightly sprinkled with oregano. As one would say in Italian, “Qui si mangia sempre bene!” (Here one always eats well!) Employees at Alexander’s Pizza have hailed from various cities and countries around the globe. Exchange students from Hungary, England, Spain, Scotland, Lithuania, Ja-
maica, Poland, Belarus and the Czech Republic have made the trip across the Atlantic to work at Alexander’s Pizza. Alexander’s success is due to the quality put into each pizza. The dough is homemade and tripleraised while the crusts are rolled with care. The delicious taste of fresh butter is found in every bite of crust as well. Pizza is not the only item on the menu made with care and dedication. Savory sandwiches are made to order with toasted French bread, creamy mozzarella, California tomato sauce and your choice of ham, Italian sausage or meatballs, and any of your favorite pizza toppings. Alexander’s has a full assortment of arcade games, such as pinball, video games and several pool and foosball tables. It’s a great place to host birthday parties. Alexander’s Pizza is located in downtown Eagle River on Railroad Street. Parking is available across the street. Customers can dine in or carry out, and can call ahead to have the pizza ready when they arrive. To enjoy the “best pizza in the North,” call (715) 479-7363.
Alexander’s Pizza in Eagle River has become a favorite of many people in the North Woods. They have perfected making a pizza
the traditional way on a 150-pound stone deck and pride themselves on doing so for the past 38 years.

The Chanticleer Inn has been creating vacation memories for families for more than six decades. Visitors can enjoy clean
beaches, great fishing, water sports and outdoor dining at Chanticleer’s beer garden on the Eagle River Chain.
Chanticleer has created memories on the Chain for over 60 years Since 1972, Jake and Sue Alward, second-generation owners of Chanticleer Inn, have been offering nostalgic elegance with a variety of recreational and leisure activities in Eagle River. Located on the Eagle River Chain, Chanticleer offers pontoon boat rentals by the half-day, full day or week. Guests can tour the Chain of 28 lakes in the comfort of a luxury cruiser. Fishing boats, boat lifts, canoes and kayaks also are available for guests and the general public alike. For sports and water lovers, a plethora of options are available. Tennis, basketball, two clean beaches and numerous piers are all readily available. Guests will not go hungry during their stay, said Alward. Chef Adam will tanta-
lize your palate with a variety of dining options. Open daily, the main dining room boasts an extensive menu that includes everything from the famous Chanti-burger to delicious lobster. Roast duck, prime rib and filet mignon are all just an order away. Featured nightly, specials include a Friday night fish fry and slow-roasted prime rib Wednesdays and Saturdays. For the lighter appetite, a diverse sandwich menu will satisfy almost everyone. The Chanticleer’s Beer Garden provides a relaxing setting for outdoor dining. Offering cold tap beer with charbroiled brats, hot dogs, burgers, rib sandwiches, grilled chicken sandwiches or delightful Caesar salads, this on-water venue is a delightful change of pace.
Chanticleer offers multiple lodging options, including motel rooms, suites, villas, and condos. The resort offers eight waterside villas with fireplaces and air conditioning for those hot summer days. Two of these villas also feature two-person whirlpools in the master bedroom. For the most luxurious, private experience, one should look to the Hudson House. This two-level, threebedroom, two-bath home comes with access to semiprivate Dollar Lake, a private pier, 14-foot aluminum boat and canoe. Experience spectacular sunsets on the southwestfacing deck overlooking the water. In addition to lodging, Chanticleer also has a private conference/banquet room that can seat up to 80
people. Complimentary wireless Internet is available in all rooms and villas. This award-winning resort has been making memories for families its personal priority for more than six decades. Awarded a two-diamond rating by AAA, Chanticleer is sure to satisfy all vacation needs. “It’s all about the fun experience. We’ve been helping people make those memories for more than 60 years,” said the Alwards. The premier resort is located three miles east of Eagle River off Highway 70 on East Dollar Lake Road. Visitors may come by car or boat. Call (715) 479-4486 or toll free 1-(800) 752-9193, or contact them at chanticleer inn.com for more information and a photo gallery.
