Challenging golf course found at Big Sand Lake Overlooking Smoky Lake, Big Sand Lake Golf Course in Phelps is one of the oldest golf courses in northern Wisconsin. According to superintendent Jim Burton, it’s one of the most peaceful, yet challenging courses in the area. Big Sand Lake Golf Course was founded in 1928 by the Eagle River Fish and Game Club. The clubhouse building was originally a horse barn, do-
What makes a great-tasting pizza every time? What makes a great pizza? Tradition. The old ways still work, and all good cooking starts with the basics. Quality food starts with the ingredients. Only the finest ingredients should be used, starting from the bottom up, to ensure satisfied customers who come back time after time for the best pizza around. The first ingredient for any pizza is dough. It should be made with flour that is high gluten, the highest quality flour, Amber Durham wheat — the finest of all wheats, cane sugar and only the best yeast. It must be made fresh, never frozen. The dough should then be thrice raised, which takes 36 hours. This ensures the best dough possible. Pear tomato puree is the main ingredient for the next layer, the sauce. Pear tomatoes are one of the best on the market because they contain the maximum of tomato solids. The best of domestic and imported spices would then be blended to create a uniquely superb sauce with a savory taste. In Wisconsin, cheese is a very important ingredient for pizza. All the cheese used should be 100% Wisconsin full cream moz-
zarella, without one gram of artificial cheese, for the fullest flavor. A superb pizza also contains the best meat. The sausage should be 100% meat, 90% lean whole hog, blended with the finest spices for a delectable taste sure to please even the most discriminating of palates. The pepperoni should also be 100% meat, 90% lean, aged to perfection to enhance the flavor, sure to please all pepperoni lovers. Other toppings available must also be high quality. Only the best onions should be used, including Vadalia, Walla Walla, Texas 10/15, and sweet red Bermuda onions. These create a mouthwatering addition to any pizza. Green peppers must be mixed slightly with the sweetest red bell peppers for an appetizing way to liven up a pizza. California black olives also add a savory taste. For a wild appetite, sweet succulent pineapple, crispy vitamin-rich broccoli, tender flaky solid white albacore, or luscious shrimp could be added. At Alexander’s Pizza, these basics have created a tradition of quality food,
which has made the restaurant the most popular pizza stop for residents and vacationers alike. In addition, when all the ingredients are being artfully combined, nobody wants to think of a dirty kitchen or unsanitary conditions. But never fear, for Alexander’s Pizza has the cleanest kitchen you’ll find. In fact, it would even be clean enough to perform surgery. Of course, an aesthetically pleasing environment is also needed to enjoy the full pleasure of eating delicious pizza. Alexander’s Pizza offers a clean, relaxing environment with friendly service and a casual atmosphere. Games and pool are also available to entertain the kids while the food is being prepared to order. Where do you get pizza made with care and concern? Alexander’s Pizza — that’s where. Alexander’s Pizza is located on Railroad Street in downtown Eagle River. Call (715) 479-7363, and your pizza will be ready when you arrive. Alexander’s Pizza is the place for you. nated to the golf club by Charles V. Barrett Sr. in 1930. The barn was moved to its current location and remodeled. Today, the course is cared for by Burton, who has managed the course for many years. The course is relatively flat and has no water, but according to golf course staff, it is far from easy. Sand traps, small greens, hole positions, doglegs and trees make the course challenging enough to keep players of all abilities on top of their game. Vacationers and local residents from the surrounding communities of Eagle River, Land O’ Lakes and Iron River, Mich., come to test their skills at Big Sand Lake. To traverse this 3,085yard, par-36 course, golf carts and pull carts are available for rent. Rates are $2.50 for pull carts and $15 for motor carts. Quality clubs also may be rented.
Snacks, soda and beer are offered to golfers in the clubhouse. The course is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. No tee times are required. Nine holes cost $15 on weekdays and $18 Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Twilight rates are featured after 4:30 every day. Twilight golf is $11
weekdays and $14 Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Visa, MasterCard and Discover are all accepted. Big Sand Lake Golf Course is located seven miles east of Phelps on Big Sand Lake Club Road off of Highway 17. Call (715) 545-2484 for more information.

Northland Marine boasts equipment, clothing, more Located in downtown Three Lakes, Northland Marine began as a family owned marine and accessory store with a repair shop. Over the past 35 years, owners Mike and Laura Boers added clothing, swimwear and other outdoor products at the request of customers. Fifteen years ago, family member Roy Sobolik suggested creating a website featuring MinnKota trolling motor parts. Sales took off. Completely selftaught, webmaster Sobolik, now 90 years old, helped Northland Marine become what it is today, the world’s largest MinnKota trolling motor parts dealer. All varieties, models and sizes of MinnKota trolling motors are available, including those featuring iPilot and global positioning system capabilities. As a factory-authorized MinnKota service center, Northland Marine has expert staff available to assist with technical problems. “Knowledgeable technicians will diagnose your motor issue and get you back on the water,” said Laura Boers. “We also help do-it-yourself customers by providing prepackaged repair kits for common repair jobs.” Reconditioned trolling motors with factory warranties are available. In the marine showroom, water enthusiasts will find accessories such as towable tubes, wetsuits, life jackets, water toys and more for family fun on the water. Northland Marine boasts an extensive selection of fashionable and functional gear and clothing. The store prides itself on offering quality products in a variety of price categories. Infant through adult extended sizes are offered throughout. According to Boers, “The already popular swimwear section has expanded this year, with new lines providing great fits for all shapes

Health Mart is a network of privately owned pharmacies joined together to leverage the power and efficiencies of a chain. Being independent allows the three locations to be more responsive to customers’ needs and to support their communities. Health Care Pharmacies feature professional prescription service and will call customers’ doctors’ offices or pharmacies back home for approval to fill a lost or forgotten prescription. Travelers can cure small inconveniences such as swimmers’ itch, bug bites, rashes or sunburns at a local Health Care Pharmacy. A variety of anti-itch and sunburn treatments are available, such as the exclusive Bite and Itch lotion, along with an expanded home medical equipment section. The pharmacies also employ experts on the treatment of outdoor exposure-related ailments. Prescription items in inventory number nearly 2,000 at each location. Group purchasing has allowed the stores to earn discounts from the wholesaler which, in turn, has lowered prices for consumers. North Woods residents and seasonal homeowners who need a place to store their Craftsman Tools can find a Craftsman
tool cabinet to serve their needs and space at Nelson’s Ace hardware in Eagle River.
Customer service, quality products provided at Nelson’s Ace Hardware Customer service and quality products make Nelson’s of Eagle River a North Woods’ leader in the hardware business. According to owner David Eibner, Nelson’s Ace Hardware has received awards for its commitment to providing superior service, achieving the highest levels of retail excellence, supporting the community and making Nelson’s Ace “the helpful place.” The goal of the business is to provide friendly, knowledgeable and helpful service as well as highquality products, Eibner said. New this year at Nelson’s is the LP Gas filling station. Nelson’s can fill propane tanks of all sizes, including those on motorhomes. Nelson’s Ace Hardware is an authorized Stihl and Ariens dealer, and has a
full line of Stihl products in stock. Both service and repair are offered for Stihl products. Additionally, Nelson’s offers Craftsman Tools. Craftsman Tools is America’s most trusted tool brand, according to Eibner. From wrenches and tool cabinets to an extensive collection of power tools, customers can find what they need with Craftsman Tools. The store continues to carry a selection of automotive products, power equipment, plumbing and electronic fixtures and other hardware products. Nelson’s has a wide variety of items for lawns and gardens. They carry a number of home accessories and gifts. The store has a broad selection of lake toys, including beach balls and towels, goggles and water toys,

inner tubes and boat towables. Nelson’s also offers a full line of Weber gas and charcoal grills. The staff at Nelson’s is eager to assist customers in any way possible. The friendly and helpful staff offer customers assistance in locating the items they need, Eibner said. Customer service and a wide selection of products are why Nelson’s has been the area’s hardware business leader since 1952. Eibner, husband of Jessica Nelson, handles the daily operations of the business with his brother-inlaw, Kevin Nelson. This is the fourth generation of family ownership. According to Eibner, two Nelson brothers originally founded a hardware store in Park Falls. After a while, the Nelson brothers separated and Carl Sr. moved to
Eagle River and started Nelson’s. Nelson’s Ace Hardware employs more than 50 people and prides itself on its customer service and wide range of products. Located at 606 E. Wall St. in downtown Eagle River, the store is open Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information on Nelson’s selection of products, call (715) 479-4496.

For a guided trail ride on horse, visit Rocking W Stables just off Highway 45 north of Eagle River. The three-mile guided
ride through the forest and fields is geared for any skill level, so the whole family can participate.
For family fun on vacation, try Kartway, Rocking W Stables Thrills of every kind can be found at Kartway theme park in Eagle River. With numerous go-cart tracks, bumper boats, water balloon catapults, mini golf, miniature jeeps and many other activities, families will never get bored. The traditional road gocart track is the most popular attraction. “When this place was just started, about 30 years ago, the go-carts were the only ride and it was just a circle track,” said owner Dean Nolan. That original track has grown to 850 feet and now features bridges, hairpin turns and long straightaways for all your racing enjoyment. For the children who can’t quite reach the pedals, Kartway offers double carts so that a parent can drive. For those who love speed, Kartway has the faster NasKarts. These cars are styled after sprint car racing machines and allow drivers to open the throttle and speed through banked corners.
As if the first two courses are not enough, Kartway has a slick track covered in wax and baby powder to test your driving skills. Slide around the corners on this eight-car track and leave your friends in the dust. Even the youngest drivers can drive at Kartway. The kiddie track allows small children to race around the pavement on miniature jeeps and four wheelers. Motorized bumper boats allow riders to splash around and bump each other until everyone is soaked. Drivers also can team up and push less-fortunate riders into the fountain located in the middle of the pool. Everyone is sure to be drenched after this one. For a glorified water-balloon fight, check out Water Wars! In this game, two people are given a bucket of water balloons. Each person then goes to their respective area and loads their water balloons into a slingshot, to send them flying to soak their opponent. If you want to challenge
yourself on the putting green, Kartway has a 18hole mini golf course. Challenging for all ages, players will have to avoid water hazards and obstacles in order to defeat their opponent. Kartway also serves candy, chips, soda and water available in concessions. Picnic areas also are available for guest use. Kartway’s well-trained staff operate and supervise the rides in order to avoid any accidents. Nolan said the staff members age 16 and older control the adult rides and those younger than 16 are responsible for the kiddie rides. Tickets for the go-carts, slick track, NasKart, bumper boats and golf are $4 each. For children age 5 and younger, golf is free. A six-pack of tickets can be purchased for $24, with the seventh free. Tickets for the kiddie karts and Water Wars! are available for $2 each. A sixpack of tickets for these games can be purchased for $12, with the seventh free. Visitors also can enjoy
Rocking W Stables, located right next to Kartway. Riders of any skill level can partake in a 45- to 50-minute 3mile guided trail ride through the North Woods. Guests ages 6 and older can ride solo for $18, or for $25 visitors can ride double on a horse to accommodate riders age 5 and younger. Pony rides also are available for $5. Rocking W Stables is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Horse-drawn wagon rides are provided at Hi-Pines Campground every Friday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. No reservations are needed. Kartway is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Special group rates are offered for parties, however, credit cards are not accepted. Kartway and Rocking W Stables are located one mile north of Eagle River at 1890 Morley Road, near the intersection of highways 45 and G. For more information, call Kartway at (715) 479-4450 or Rocking W Stables at (715) 617-6779.

Beauty, challenging holes found at Eagle River course Eagle River Golf Course is famous for its playing conditions, challenging layout and North Woods beauty. It is open to the public for everyone to enjoy. When golfers play at Eagle River Golf Course, they often are playing on the best course conditions available in the North Woods. “Many of our customers rave every year about the overall playing conditions they experience at our facility. We take pride in giving the golfers a playing surface that is consistent with our four-star rating we receive every year from Golf Digest’s Best Places to Play,” said Brad Missling, the club’s PGA golf professional. Golf Digest has given Eagle River Golf Course a four-star rating 10 years in a row. The customers playing the course are the people responsible for the rating the course receives. “This rating reflects the value and awesome experience of playing at the Eagle River Golf Course,” said Missling. Eagle River Golf Course offers some of the most affordable rates of any fourstar rated golf course in the North Woods. Players can rest assured they are getting great value when they choose to golf at Eagle River Golf Course. Undulating greens and narrow fairways keep the course challenging. The practice area represents what customers should expect from a course with a four-star rating. A new putting and chipping green was built five years ago, a huge improve-
ment for those who wish to practice all aspects of their short game. For golfers to practice their greenside sand game, a practice greenside bunker is featured. The driving range boasts three levels of teeing surface with target greens and yardage signs. Offering four sets of tees, the course is enjoyable to all skill levels. The newly added gold tees have become popular with senior golfers. Many of the course’s holes are carved out of mature trees, reminding visitors why they love to golf in the North Woods area. The abundance of wildlife is another unique characteristic of the course. White-tailed deer make the course their home, red fox are spotted frequently and every spring the mallards take to the water on the course. “Trees, water hazards and rolling hills have made the course into one of the most popular courses in northern Wisconsin,” Missling said. The fun can continue after a round of golf. The clubhouse offers a friendly atmosphere to enjoy food, drinks and snacks. Large groups are welcome. The restaurant seats more than 100 people, and the outdoor patio is a popular spot to relax. The restaurant overlooks the scenic course. Equipment from the best vendors in the industry is offered in the pro shop. Men’s club lines for sale are from Callaway, Titleist, Cobra, Ping, Taylor Made,
Adams and Cleveland. Club fitting is available to ensure equipment fits a golfer’s swing. Men’s clothing lines include Cutter & Buck, Adidas, Sun Mountain, Antigua, Gear and Nike. Ladies’ lines carried are Antigua, Adidas, Annika, Nike, Sun Mountain, Gear and Cutter & Buck. “We carry a wider selection of ladies’ clothes than any other course in the area. If we don’t have an item you want, in most cases, we can special order it for you and have it shipped to your front door,” said Missling. Eagle River Golf Course has two certified professionals on staff, PGA professional Brad Missling and Director of Golf Instruction Jeff Symmonds. Both are trained, qualified instructors to help golfers improve all parts of their game. Individual lessons are offered; group clinics and golf schools also are offered. Pricing information for lessons and golf schools can be viewed at eaglerivergolfcourse.com. Back again this year is the customer appreciation card. For every full-price 18-hole round golfers purchase, they will receive a stamp on their card. Once the card has been stamped five times, they receive a free round of golf with the rental of a golf cart. During the peak season, June 15 through Aug. 12, nine-hole green fees are $25 and 18-hole green fees are $39. Twilight rates start approximately five hours before dark and are $15. Great food and service at Sportsmen’s Chalet Sportsmen’s Chalet on Dead Horse Bend, three miles east of St. Germain, offers great dining for the whole family in a North Woods atmosphere with mounted wildlife and an assortment of antiques. In the late 1800s, there stood a horse farm where Sportsmen’s Chalet is located, with a logging camp on the other side of the Wisconsin River. Loggers would often bring their horses across the river for food and lodging at the farm. In 1917 a bar was built where the farm once was, named Dead Horse Bend after a bend in the river where many logging horses fell through the ice. Gary Don and Laurel Frank purchased the bar in 1981, renaming it Sportsmen’s Chalet on Dead Horse Bend. They and their
two daughters, Tricia and Rochelle, welcome you to their establishment. Sportsmen’s Chalet begins serving lunch at 11:30 a.m and dinner at 5 p.m. Menu items include delicious steaks, shrimp, juicy broasted chicken, homemade pizza and the North Woods’ best ribs. Nightly specials are featured during the week. Sunday’s special includes half of a broasted chicken for $8.95 or onefourth of a broasted chicken with a half-rack of barbecued ribs for $14.50. On Mondays, customers may order one deep-fried or broiled walleye for $10.95 or all-you-can-eat spaghetti for $9.50. Also available on Mondays are 35-cent chicken wings. and French fries for an additional $1.75. Thursdays offer two broasted or grilled pork chops for $9.95 or two smoked chops for $10.50. Also available are buildyour-own soft- or hard-shell tacos for $1.25. Enjoy a margarita for just $2.50. The Friday fish fry is served from 4 to 9:30 p.m. and offers Alaskan whitefish deep-fried or broiled for $8.95. If one plate isn’t enough for you, feel free to ask for seconds. The Friday super special is the “Back to the Basic Fish Fry,” which offers three pieces of Alaskan whitefish, coleslaw and French fries for $5.95, served from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Also available is walleye, deep-fried or broiled, for $10.95, deep-fried yellow lake perch for $13.50, and a deep-fried fish platter for $14.95. When it comes to outdoor recreation on the water, WalkAbout in Eagle River offers a wide selection of canoes, kayaks and
the popular paddleboard. The store also offers clothing for any water sport activity.
Outdoor adventures begin at WalkAbout The term walkabout was first used by Australian aborigines, meaning a journey one would take during adulthood to rediscover one’s self. Joy and Kevin Nelson opened WalkAbout Paddle & Apparel in Eagle River 11 years ago with that philosophy in mind. WalkAbout can help prepare you for your life’s journey. “We have a large selection of kayaks, canoes and outdoor equipment for those who quietly enjoy the Eagle River area,” said owner Joy Nelson. WalkAbout features several lines of kayaks made in America. The store also carries canoes from Souris River and Mad River. Souris River is available in Kevlar and Carbon Tec. Mad River is stocked in Royalex and rotomolded plastic. Newly added to WalkAbout’s outdoor equipment are this year’s stand-up paddleboards. Designed for recreation and exercise, paddle-
boarding is an activity suitable for all members of the family. For those inexperienced on the water, WalkAbout has staff to help choose the right equipment. WalkAbout also is a local Yakima dealer, providing expert help in finding just the right rack accessories to transport bikes and boats safely. WalkAbout hosts kayak and paddleboard demos every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Silver Lake Beach, no sign-up necessary. Any interested parties wanting details should stop by the store or call for more information. Canoes and kayaks aren’t the only outdoor items people will find for their time on the water. The store offers a selection of life jackets and swimsuits for family members who want to take a dip. Sizes are available for adults, children and even the family dog. WalkAbout has expanded its selection of children’s books and resource guides
essential to a safe and successful outdoor experience. Coloring books, insect guides and maps of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan are just a few of the many items the store offers. While on walkabout, finding the proper footwear is incredibly important. WalkAbout offers a selection of Keen, Merrell, Chaco, Teva, Dansko, Jambu, Think, El Naturalista and Born shoes. SmartWool socks are available in all different styles and colors. The store also offers children’s shoes including Keen, Ugg and Dansko. Those with a sense of style will find that WalkAbout offers a perfect combination of fashionable and functional clothing for men and women. Brands include Patagonia, Mountain Hardwear, Royal Robbins, Horny Toad, Woolrich, Ex Officio and Life Is Good. Women’s clothing lines include Lole, Roxy, Nic and Zoe, Spanx and Nomadic Traders. WalkAbout also has up-
dated its selection of Lake Girl apparel with new colors and styles for women and children. In order to accessorize your new-found look, WalkAbout offers a large selection of Vera Bradley handbags and Brighton jewelry, wallets and handbags. The store also has an expansive selection of bath and body products by Thymes. Newly added scents are now available in home products such as dish soap and all-purpose cleaner. WalkAbout Paddle & Apparel is located at 622 E. Wall St. in Eagle River. Summer hours for the store are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Fishing Guide’s Exhibit displayed at NorthernWaters Museum To see the stories that made the Land O’ Lakes area a great place to hunt, fish or just visit, experience the new Guide’s Exhibit at Land O’ Lakes NorthernWaters Museum. Land O’ Lakes NorthernWaters Museum is located just west of downtown Land O’ Lakes, on the south side of Highway B. The museum and all related activities are sponsored by the Land O’ Lakes Historical Society. The “Guide’s Exhibit” is a collection of vintage fishing boat motors, fishing and hunting equipment of the past and nostalgia of times well remembered. Featured are biographies and pictures celebrating many famous guides of years ago, as well as modern guides of the area who carry on the old traditions, contributing to the lore and lure of the North Woods. Stories about guides include tales of the “Big One That Got Away,” plus interesting stories about renowned clients. Old photos and newspaper articles make guides’ biographies come alive. Artifacts donated and loaned to the museum by guides and their clients give visitors a feel for the people who came up to the North Woods year after year, not only to fish for trophy specimens or hunt for game, but also to experience the beauty and serenity of the lakes and pines. Visitors may be a part of the exhibit by writing notes in the visitors guide or adding personal stories about guides they know or remember. The 2012 Guide’s Exhibit is coordinated by Dr. Barbara Wilkinson, with Sandie Pauly as the exhibit designer. The exhibit will run for two years. Volunteer docents, chaired by Bonnie Clarke, guide visitors through the exhibit, answer questions, and direct history enthusiasts on how to donate or lend articles to the muse-
of Land O’ Lakes are on display. Annin’s series of books is uniquely illustrated and based on exhibits featured in recent years at the museum. The books are in a fourbook portfolio which includes “Gillis the Glacier,” telling the ancient geologic history of the area; “The Tree,” featuring the logging era; “The Hill and the Chalet,” relating the story of the museum itself; and “My Summer Vacation,” showing the development of North Woods resorts. Persons wishing to donate, lend photos and artifacts, or share stories on guides or Land O’ Lakes history should contact Barb Wilkinson at (906) 5442183 or drwilks@msn.com. The exhibit will change during its two-year run as additional pictures, stories and artifacts are added.

The market also is known for its selection of gourmet cheeses, fine wines and homemade smoked meats. Prime Choice carries a selection of 100% grass-fed beef and “certified organic” chicken. “We carry only USDA Prime and Top Choice steaks, fresh cut and hand trimmed to our customers’ orders and satisfaction,” said manager Rick Behrens. “Customers are amazed at the quality and appearance of a hand-trimmed piece of meat. Everyone likes their steak cut a little different, and you just can’t get that with a precut showcase steak,” he said. Prime Choice grinds its own ground chuck and fresh-ground sirloin. “All of our ground beef is made fresh on the premises, not bought from another processor. We feel that our fresh-ground products makes for great grilling, especially our famous bacon burger, which has bacon blended in for a unique flavor,” noted Behrens. “We also have several additional products available, including restaurantquality stuffed chicken breasts, our very own cranberry bacon burger, customseasoned pulled pork and our newest bratwurst, the bacon and cheddar brat,” said Behrens.

Prime Choice also is widely known for its large selection of more than 50 different smoked meats. All smoked products such as bacon, jerky, summer sausage, pork chops, hams and bratwurst are made in Prime Choice’s own onpremise smokehouse. “Our market produces an Italian sausage, polish sausage and authentic chorizo sausage,” noted assistant Mark Blotnicki. “Our varieties of fresh and frozen bratwursts include our original onion, jalapeño, sauerkraut and wild rice brats. Plus, try our famous cranberry bratwurst,

our top-selling flavored brat and customer favorite.” The popular cranberry brat is featured at Eagle River’s own Cranberry Fest every October. Prime Choice also offers a large selection of deli meats and cheeses. “You can find some of the ordinary meat and cheese varieties found in most other stores, but our focus is on quality taste while still being comparable in price,” said Behrens. “We carry a wide variety of imported Welsh Cheddars such as English Tintern and Black Mountain
along with specialty cheeses such as Domestic Maytag Bleu, Rosenborg Danish Bleu, French imported Brie and several new imported varieties, that are very highly rated,” said Behrens. Prime Choice also offers an array of top-quality Wisconsin cheeses, including Deppler’s Full Cream Baby Swiss, Widmers Specialty Brick and Black River Gorgonzola. The store is located at 1144 Highway 45, south of Eagle River. Prime Choice can be contacted at (715) 479-4456 or found online at prime-choicemeats.com.
