Northernaire in Three Lakes offers luxurious lakefront villas, condos For a relaxed vacation destination with that rustic appeal, look no further than Northernaire’s luxurious villas and condominiums in Three Lakes. At the gateway of the North Woods, more specifically the ChequamegonNicolet National Forest, Northernaire showcases all that nature has to offer in the Nicolet — scenic bicycling, hiking, camping, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and world-class snowmobiling are a few of the activities to enjoy. Just a short drive from the Northernaire into Three Lakes, you will find an oldfashioned yet inviting town full of shopping, dining and arts. Many nearby towns, including Eagle River and Minocqua, offer extensive shopping and dining opportunities. Nearly everything you’ll want or need can easily be found in the Three Lakes area. Northernaire’s greatest feature is the world’s largest freshwater Chain of Lakes at your fingertips. The Chain consists of 28 lakes, 20 of which are easily accessible from the docks on Deer Lake and have a surface area of 7,626 acres, with 106 miles of shoreline. These lakes are home to 16 varieties of fish. Some lakes are secluded in the Nicolet National Forest, and all vary in size. They offer everything from water sports to canoeing to fishing. Northernaire offers all the luxuries of the North Woods in their condominiums and villas. Deluxe condominium units are constructed with maple hardwood floors, solid hardwood doors and trim, granite countertops, gas fireplaces and outdoor patios. Some units include tubs with ceramic surrounds, jetted tubs, lofts, arched doorways and various interior packages. Buyers will want to act quickly as only four condominiums are left for purchase. Recently, the Small Business Institute/Small Business Administration/UW System conducted anonymous independent surveys of pizza customers of the 11 major pizza restaurants in the Eagle River area. The survey considered quality of food, cleanliness, service and atmosphere. Alexander’s Family Pizza was rated #1! “Out of 11 restaurants mentioned — Alexander’s was ranked number 1,” an independent was second, and a national chain was third, “both far behind in customer choice.” Alexander’s was found to “offer a quality product at a reasonable price. According to the survey, quality has proven to be of more importance to the customer. Alexander’s has excellent pizza. It uses the highest quality ingredients.” Alexander’s Family Pizza wishes to thank all the many people who participated in the surveys. We truly appreciate the fact that our long-term goal of wanting to be known for quality pizza has been realized.

There’s something for everyone at Fountain Blu in Eagle River “Listen to the customer” has been the mantra of Fountain Blu owners Chuck and Sally Kemp, now celebrating their 20th year. Located in Eagle River, Fountain Blu has something for everyone. With selections ranging from Eagle River apparel to a line of Fairy figurines, something new can always be found. Upon arrival in the unique store, the first thing noticed is the array of wildlife and Eagle River clothing. With what seems like the entire animal kingdom being represented, customers can find T-shirts featuring everything from mountain lions and moose to wolves and eagles. The newly expanded polar fleece section will keep visitors warm on those cool summer evenings. With a variety of styles, colors and sizes, these sleek fleeces are a beautiful addition to any wardrobe. For the wine connoisseur, new to Fountain Blu are handcrafted wine caddies and cork baskets. These metal pieces of art give wine a unique personality and protect the beverage from any harm. With shapes such as lighthouses and knights, these caddies have been flying off the shelves. The new cork baskets can be a great two-in-one gift for a friend. The bottleshaped basket opens so that

a new bottle of wine can be inserted and presented. After the wine has been removed and enjoyed, the remaining cage holds corks and creates a beautiful centerpiece. Barrel, house and other shapes are available. For chefs and barbecuers alike, an assortment of cookbooks and utensils will allow visitors to take the rustic flavor of the North Woods home with them. The unique store features Tervis Tumbler cups that come in five different sizes. The 24-ounce cup has a tapered base so that it will fit in most car and boat cup holders. Each one of these quality tumblers has a lifetime guarantee and comes double layered to stop condensation. If a Tervis Tumbler is dropped in the water, no one is to worry. These glasses float, making them perfect for a summer cruise on the boat. Faerie Glen fairy and angel figurines can be found at Fountain Blu. The collection includes many limitededition items which will be retired when the allotment is sold. A gift of these popular products is sure to bring a smile. Quality wooden jewelry boxes, jewelry and bath and body products line the shelves of the store. A large selection of framed artwork is available

as well as an assortment of metal wall art. These pieces can complete any room. How better to pledge your allegiance or decorate your house than with one of Fountain Blu’s flags? With tradi- tional selections such as Old Glory to flags with kittens and butterflies, these quality banners instantly make a statement. “Because we’re always changing merchandise and getting new items in, we’ve always got some extras to move into the half-price area,” Chuck said. “You can

find a good bargain on items in this section.” According to the Kemps, Fountain Blu has variety in its heritage. Before the store was opened, a five-anddime store occupied the space. The store sold trinkets for no more than 10 cents. The Kemps try to keep that same variety and fair pricing alive with Fountain Blu, as they continue to evolve. Fountain Blu is open daily at 9:30 a.m. Call (715) 479- 6312 for more information.

Known for its quality entrées and consistent service, White Stag Inn supper club of Sugar Camp has earned its reputation for fine dining in the North Woods over the past 56 years, according to owner Dave Widule. The establishment boasts a complete menu that includes five different cuts of choice steaks, housespecialty Kasseler Rippchen, or smoked pork chops, colossal white shrimp and Icelandic haddock and swordfish. Two other features are farm-raised catfish and succulent half-chicken. Chicken prepared “Dave’s way” has an extra garlic taste. Each entrée is prepared to order over two large charcoal broilers in the main dining room so guests can watch as chefs grill each dinner. The salads at White Stag Inn are a unique complement to the meal. Large lettuce wedges are served family style, with a choice of three homemade dressings especially made to blend together or stand alone. Each dinner is complete with a large, baked Wisconsin russet potato served with a special cheese and chive sauce and hot rolls. The Widule family is now in its third generation of restaurateurs.

Elegant jewelry, watches created at Lehner-Stephan Lehner-Stephan Jewelers in downtown Eagle River has 67 years of experience and the knowledge to create and repair fine-quality jewelry, clocks and watches. The business was founded by Al Lehner in 1945. At that time, the store was devoted to making and repairing watches and clocks. The current owner and nephew of Lehner, Mike Stephan, had visited his uncle frequently over the years. He was attending college at UW-Oshkosh when he learned of his uncle’s wish for one of his nephews to take over his business. Two years later in 1978, Mike Stephan enrolled at Milwaukee Area Technical College for watchmaking and jewelry design with the intention of meeting his uncle’s wishes. In 1980, Stephan found himself the new owner of his uncle’s store, but was soon left to learn the rest of the business world by himself, as his uncle died shortly thereafter. Now in 2012, Stephan boasts more than 32 years of experience as a certified master jewelry designer and watchmaker. Stephan is driven by his passion for improving jewelry and the gratification he receives upon creating quality pieces for customers. As an artist, Stephan gravitates toward natural designs, drawing inspiration from pinecones, acorns, deer and the multitude of wildlife he experiences in the North Woods on a daily basis. While Stephan possesses a unique style, this is not the extent of his craft. His vast portfolio ranges from natural shapes to elegant and modern designs. “Simple elegance will always be in,” said Stephan. Stephan’s custom-made pieces feature a variety of materials, including rare elk’s teeth. Stephan explained that two teeth in every elk’s mouth are made of ivory. These teeth are gathered and hand carved for earrings, pendants,

Many customers take their jewelry to Stephan to transform into new, one-of-akind pieces. Lehner-Stephan Jewelers sells a large selection of fine watches, rings, engagement rings, bracelets, charms, earrings, pendants and other fine jewelry. from the Czech Republic. Popular items include Bavano enameled wall art. If the store doesn’t have what you’re looking for, Stephan can find it. “We can get anything that anybody wants,” explained Stephan. “I shop for people.” His network of suppliers and craftsmen help hunt down whatever a customer desires. Visitors won’t need to worry about price. LehnerStephan uses the same suppliers as chain stores, allowing Stephan to compete with any price. However, Stephan offers a quality piece that has been looked over and cared for by a true artisan. “Customers know that we really care and that we have the knowledge and

ability,” Stephan added. “They can trust us; that’s why they come back year after year.” Family history, years of experience, knowledge and the desire to make each piece the best it can be makes Lehner-Stephan a very special and unique jewelry store and one of the best in the area. “Come and see what we are really about,” said Stephan. “You won’t be disappointed.” Lehner-Stephan Jewelers is located at 110 Wall St. in Eagle River. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. The store can also be reached by phone at (715) 479-4520 or on the website at michaelseaglegold.com.

In addition, entertainment, interesting displays and contests will round out this Eagle River fest Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6-7, at the Vilas County Fairgrounds, downtown Eagle River and at the Derby Track. Cranberry marsh and winery tours will be offered from Oct. 4-7 leaving from the Eagle River Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center. The tours will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday; at 11 and 11:30 a.m. Friday; every 20 minutes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday; and every hour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Call for reservations at (715) 479-6400 or 1-(800) 359-6315. More than 1,200 people annually take the trip to the marshes to hear and see the story of cranberries. The trip also includes a stop at Three Lakes Winery. At the winery, visitors will be treated to wine tasting, including locally made cranberry wine. The main attraction at Cranberry Fest is a huge craft show at the fairgrounds from 9 to 4 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. An open-air antique show is set from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in downtown Eagle River. A farmers market is planned downtown both days. Many cranberry taste temptations will allow festivalgoers to eat their way through the fest. Such items as cranberry fritters, cranberry mustard and cranberry cheesecake will be offered. There even will be cranberry beer and soda. Another special event will be the Lake Country Weaver and Fiber Artist show and sale at First Congregational Church from 10

Lunch will be served downstairs by the Women’s Fellowship of the church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A used-book sale and cranberry video are planned at Olson Memorial Library from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The Make-A-Wish Foundation will benefit from the world’s largest cranberry cheesecake at the fairgrounds. Anyone can enter the Cranberry Fest CookOff. People also can participate in the Cranberry Fest Walk/Run benefiting the Ministry Eagle River Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Program. The events start at the fairgrounds and take in the scenery of Colorama in the North Woods as well as the Eagle River Chain of Lakes. Walkers can choose between 2-, 4- and 8-mile events. There also is a 5kilometer fun run. Those events will be held Satur-

day. For more information on the fitness events, phone (715) 479-0230. An arts and crafts auction is planned at the fairgrounds Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in the Make-A-Wish Foundation tent. There will be a Cranberry Fest Market Place at the Derby Track from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. A shuttle bus will run between the track and fairgrounds both days. First National Bank’s Cranberry Fest Dance will be featured Saturday night at Finnegan’s at the Wild Eagle Lodge from 8 to 11:30 p.m. The Northwoods Children’s Museum also will host a mini cranberry bog display. There will be free shuttle buses operating Saturday between downtown, the fairgrounds and Derby Track from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The shuttle will also run Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Alexander’s Pizza brings tradition to your table More than 38 years ago, two brothers came to the North Woods seeking summer jobs. Rooted in a strong Italian community in Chicago, pizza was the staple at home and at college. Seeing a lack of pizzerias in the area, the brothers realized a great opportunity existed and opened their own pizzeria in Eagle River. Sources say the locals at the time looked down on them and called them brash boys from “Chi-town.” Today, the pizzeria has become a landmark. Customers come from all over the country to taste the best pizza in the area. Even celebrities have visited Alexander’s on occasion, including professional

football players; head coaches from the NFL, NBA and NCAA; hockey players; movie stars; movie critics; national sports commentators; leaders of U.S. industries; newscasters; and authors. A visiting film critic even gave Alexander’s a “thumbs up.” Although the business opened many years ago, one thing remains the same — the traditional method of making pizza at Alexander’s. The pizza is made the way Grandma Del Cristo said — use the best to make the best. The ingredients used are only the finest, which the owners ensure. The cheese used is 100% full-cream mozzarella, which is

straight from the most award-winning dairy in Wisconsin, along with 9month-aged Romano. The soul of a pizza is the crust, which is made with high-gluten flour. Adding flavor to the pizza is the thick, rich sauce created from tomato puree from pear tomatoes — the meatiest of tomatoes. The meat also is very lean, at 90% lean meat, with no soy fillers. For the more adventurous pizza connoisseurs, Alexander’s offers broccoli, shrimp, albacore and pineapple to create original gourmet pizzas. Diners also can try a delicious oven-roasted cheese bread appetizer — one-half loaf of freshly baked French bread, basted with butter, seasoned with garlic and aged Romano, covered with mozzarella, roasted to a honey-golden brown and lightly sprinkled with oregano. As one would say in Italian, “Qui si mangia sempre bene!” (Here one always eats well!) Employees at Alexander’s Pizza have hailed from various cities and countries around the globe. Exchange students from Hungary, England, Spain, Scotland,

Lithuania, Jamaica, Poland, Belarus and the Czech Republic have made the trip across the Atlantic to work at Alexander’s Pizza. Alexander’s success is due to the quality put into each pizza. The dough is homemade and tripleraised while the crusts are rolled with care. The delicious taste of fresh butter is found in every bite of crust as well. Pizza is not the only item on the menu made with care and dedication. Savory sandwiches are made to order with toasted French bread, creamy mozzarella, California tomato sauce and your choice of ham, Italian sausage or meatballs, and any of your favorite pizza toppings. Alexander’s has a full assortment of arcade games, such as pinball, video games and several pool and foosball tables. It’s a great place to host birthday parties. Alexander’s Pizza is located in downtown Eagle River on Railroad Street. Parking is available across the street. Customers can dine in or carry out, and can call ahead to have the pizza ready when they arrive. To enjoy the “best pizza in the North,” call (715) 479-7363.

Alexander’s Pizza in Eagle River has become a favorite of many people in the North Woods. They have perfected making a pizza the traditional way on a 150-pound stone deck and pride themselves on doing so for the past 38 years.

Annual Wheel-A-Way planned at Northernaire in Three Lakes The Three Lakes Chamber of Commerce and Welcome Center will hold its 21st annual Nicolet WheelA-Way family bicycle ride Saturday, Sept. 1. The 16- or 32-mile bike tour through the Nicolet National Forest will begin at Northernaire Resort located on Highway 32. Registration will start at 8 a.m. and the ride will begin at 9:20 a.m. Registration will cost $30 per person or $65 for a family of four. After the ride there will be drawings for raffle prizes and a grand-prize drawing for a bicycle at the Franklin Lake campground shelter.

Refreshment breaks will take place along the route and hot lunch will be served at the campground shelter. Registered riders also will receive a T-shirt and all riders will receive a chance to win door prizes. Since the event will not start at Burnside Park this year, there will be a large tent at Northernaire where business brochures and offerings will be on display for cyclers. “This is not a race, but a casual ride for individuals of all ages,” said the chamber’s executive director, Skip Brunswick. “We encourage family participation, and

bikes pulling trailers are welcome.” The two routes will be identified with road markings and directional warning signs, according to Brunswick. The ride is on public roads, and riders will have to obey all traffic laws. Riders also will be required to use an American National Standards Institute-approved helmet and youths must be accompanied by an adult. Sag wagon support will be provided by local emergency medical technicians to assist with medical situations, said Brunswick. “Bicyclists and their

equipment must be in good condition to finish the ride,” he said. “Riders should carry their own pump, spare tube and tools. Rest room facilities will be available at the registration location, midroute and at the lunch location.” Preregistered and nonregistered riders may check in from 8 to 9 a.m. at Northernaire Resort, located at 6990 Bengs Road off Highway 32 in Three Lakes. Riders will be welcomed with hot coffee, juice and cookies at registration. For more information, contact the Three Lakes chamber at (715) 546-3344.

VACATION WEEK

Page 17

Visit Lake Forest ‘fore’ golf tradition Lake Forest Golf Club has a rich tradition of providing challenging holes, friendly service and knowledgeable golf professionals to vacationers and local residents. The beautiful North Woods scenery of the historical course makes Lake Forest Golf Club a wonderful place to enhance your summer fun. “You can come by land or by sea,” golf pro Rick “Pepper” Freund said, referring to the course’s location on the Chain of Lakes. The course can be accessed by boat on the channel between Voyageur and Eagle lakes. Guests are welcome to stop by for a game of golf or enjoy food and drinks at the clubhouse. The romantic history of golf at Lake Forest dates back more than 95 years. In 1917, a small group of wealthy “regulars” selected a wooded and hilly farm site with frontage on two lakes and established what

was called the Everett Resort Golf Course. They carved a nine-hole golf course from the wooded hills and built a clubhouse. The golf club was private and catered to the elite group of cottage owners in the Everett Colony between Catfish and Cranberry lakes. Through the years, the golf club has entertained the rich and famous. On some days, as many as 100 caddies served the club and its members. While the rest of the country struggled through the Great Depression, the driveways of local estates sported Fleetwoods, Rolls Royces and Cords. Bets of $1,000 per hole were not unusual. Many famous golfers played the course — Walter Hogan, Ollie Meyers and José Hurado, the South American golf champion. In the 1950s, President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his brother, Milton, also were frequent visitors.

The North Woods scenery of historic Lake Forest Golf Club makes the course a wonderful place to enhance summer and fall fun in Eagle River.

When Jim Mason purchased Eagle Waters Golf Club in 1963, he built the first four units of Lake Forest Resort. Today, Lake Forest Resort and Golf Club offers golf, tennis, a fitness center and nature trails to guests and the public. The nine-hole golf course winds through the hilly greens and provides tee times from 7 a.m. daily until 6 p.m. This fully irrigated, par36 golf course is 3,000 yards long. Amenities at the golf course include a clubhouse, a fully equipped pro shop, practice green, gas carts and push carts, rental clubs, and yearly and corporate memberships. Freund offers individual lessons. There also are weekly specials on merchandise at the pro shop. Seniors can receive discounted greens fees seven days a week. Other specials include Sweetheart days Saturdays and Sundays, when couples can play for $24 after 2 p.m. Lake Forest also offers individual 10-play passes. The pass costs $140 for 10 nine-hole rounds and the 11th game is free. The clubhouse serves a full menu of sandwiches, brats and burgers, starting at 11 a.m. Deck and dance parties are held every Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m., featuring live entertainment, weather permitting. The bartenders also can make your favorite drinks, including their famous Bloody Marys. Food and beverage must be ordered at the bar, but guests are welcome to sit at the tables outside or in the clubhouse. If golfers would like more information about golfing at Lake Forest, Freund can be reached at (715) 479-4211. In addition to the golf course, Lake Forest Recreation Area has a health and fitness center which is open to the public. Memberships are available at the fitness center, and combination memberships for fitness and unlimited golf also are

Waldmann Construction builds personalized homes Waldmann Construction in St. Germain believes that building a home should be a rewarding experience. Staff at Waldmann also believe the process of building is as important as the final product, and that both should leave a positive, lasting impression on those involved. According to owner Brad Waldmann, “When we build a home for a client, a partnership is created in order to guide clients through what becomes a memorable event.” It begins with the initial design which can be an existing plan or some notes on a napkin. Waldmann explains, “We’ve had clients approach us with a drawing and ask, ‘Will this stand?’ Or, ‘Can the bathroom be made bigger?’ Sometimes there is

sentimental value in an existing property that clients want to incorporate into a new home or addition, such as door trim with the heights of their children or a tree in the yard that was planted when they married.” Waldmann’s talented design staff takes time to listen to conceptual ideas and wishes in order to create a unique final product. When a design is finalized, building begins. “Everything can be organized through our office,” said Waldmann. “We work with clients through budgeting and permit applications, as well as product and color choices. It’s great to see clients so comfortable with us that they come in, grab a cup of coffee and head to the cabinet shop for a chat with the carpenters. We handle the scheduling of subcontractors and ordering of supplies to ensure quality control and the timely completion of every job.”

Waldmann Construction’s skilled craftsmen are proficient with many kinds of building materials, including log, timber, stickbuilt and SIPs panels. Because Waldmann does not work exclusively with any log dealer, they are able to offer products suited to clients’ budgets and needs. Waldmann’s employees are continually exploring new products and being educated on installation and new techniques. Green building has become an important part of many Waldmann Construction projects. Building sustainable, low maintenance, energy-efficient projects helps protect the environment while many times enabling owners to save money and improve their family’s health, safety and comfort. Waldmann’s building inspector is certified to facilitate safe removal of lead, mold and asbestos. A professional opinion is offered

Commitment to quality has led Country Store in Eagle River to win awards for its chocolate walnut fudge, caramel corn

and cashew snappers. Visitors may stop in and watch the creation of the fudge unfold before their eyes.

Fudge, turtles, taffy and more satisfy visitors at Country Store The sweet aroma of fudge, made with Wisconsin cream and butter, or peanut brittle bubbling away in a copper kettle welcomes customers as they enter the “sweetest place in town,” Country Store. For many years, stopping in at Country Store in downtown Eagle River has been a tradition of many families. Dick and Debbie Preuhs thank all their loyal customers for their support as they continue in their 29th summer as owners. A commitment to quality is one of the reasons Country Store has won awards for its chocolate walnut fudge, caramel corn and cashew snappers. Though fudge and tur-

tles are customer favorites, there are many other great candies and chocolates available. Toffee, almond bark and chocolate pretzels also are popular. One of the largest selections of sugar-free chocolates is available for those with special dietary needs. Continuing to be popular this year, cinnamontoasted almonds, pecans and cashews are made right at the store. Country Store has expanded its line of saltwater taffy and has many fun-filled types of candy. It also stocks nostalgic brands of candy for the child in everyone. After customers purchase their candy, they can cool down with a refreshing

ice-cream cone, sundae, malt or soda. Customers have more than 24 flavors to choose from, and can get a chocolate-dipped cone or a chocolate-sprinkled cone. Children can enjoy a special treat of sitting at the store’s “children only” table. In fall, it’s time to begin the caramel apple season. “As customers anticipate the first apple of the season, they often remind us they are the best caramel apples they have ever tasted,” said owner Debbie Preuhs. When people start to head home after vacation, gifts of candy from Country Store is a great way to say thank-you, or a wonderful

remembrance of time spent in Eagle River. “Customers tell us all the time they need to bring home Country Store treats for their families, friends or co-workers who are always requesting it,” said Debbie Preuhs. “Even the family dog is happy to get our special dog bones.” Don’t forget about Country Store at Christmas. The Country Store staff is able to help with gifts for family, friends and corporate associates. Order early because Country Store gets very busy around this season. Located at 116 E. Wall St., Country Store is open daily year-round. Call (715) 479-9226 or visit the website at ercandy.com.
