First of all, we want to extend a HUGE thank you to all the loyal California Nut Festival enthusiasts who have followed us over the past couple of years as we’ve stayed nimble and navigated through a series of rescheduling due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and then the one-time change to a fall festival in 2021. Now we are excited to get back-on-track for a springtime California Nut Festival in 2023. We know everyone is eager to gather, reconnect and celebrate our agricultural community and this highly anticipated festival is just the ticket.
While super fun to attend, the mission of the California Nut Festival is to connect consumers and farmers, cultivate an understanding of nut production in the state and how California nuts fit into a healthy lifestyle. After all, our dedicated Butte County farmers, growers and producers are indeed “feeding the future.”
Additionally, the California Nut Festival serves an important purpose as our signature fundraising event that provides support for the prized and historic Patrick Ranch Museum. To date – and as a direct result of this community event – a whopping $205,000 has been donated to the Patrick Ranch Museum to preserve and interpret the agricultural history of the Sacramento Valley.
We hope you’ll spend the special day experiencing all the elements the California Nut Festival has to offer. As you stroll through the amazing grounds of the historic Patrick Ranch Museum, you can also feast your eyes on art, vintage tractors, shop
for local products, learn about the equipment used in nut farming, and find out about health benefits and the important role agriculture plays in the North State. Also, we encourage everyone to tour the magnificent Glenwood Farm House during the festival to see our latest and greatest and join us as we salute our local agriculture, history, farmers and the food we are proud to harvest.
We’re also looking forward to another fiercely fun Nutty Chef Competition that has become a true fan-favorite activity. Three local chefs will each have 30 minutes to create a culinary delight using local products from festival vendors, a secret ingredient and their own special additions.
Chef Ann Leon, now of Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, was named the 2021 Nutty Chef and will transfer the coveted trophy to a new top chef to proudly display for the coming year.
We encourage festival goers to consider their alternative transportation options to arrive by taking advantage of the bike path that runs along the Midway, knowing bikes will be secure in our bike check. On-site parking is limited so we encourage everyone to carpool, which helps to makes the event experience that much more fun when enjoyed with friends.
We hope to see you on Saturday, May 13 for a beautiful, fun-filled day at the Patrick Ranch Museum where the region can celebrate the springtime return of the California Nut Festival.
Karen Lobach Patrick Ranch MuseumAs if the springtime return of the California Nut Festival in 2023 isn’t exciting enough, we’re thrilled to announce the return of the crowd-favorite “Nutty Chef” competition as well! Once again, this culinary event will feature a lively and fun competition in the cooking demo area. The festival attendees audience will enjoy watching a fierce yet friendly culinary contest that highlights the ingenuity of three local chefs all competing for the title of 2023 “Nutty Chef.”
As a part of the culinary contest, each chef will have 30 minutes to prepare a dish of their choice in front of the live audience. The chefs will be allowed to bring ingredients of their choice but also will be given a number of secret ingredients that must be incorporated into their special dish. After a taste test, the panel of judges will select and announce the winner during the festival. Also, the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions of the talented local chefs.
Please plan your day to join the fun at this unique and nutty event!
During the last “Nutty Chef” competition (at the festival in fall of 2021), all three of the participating local chefs created delectable entrees as part of the spirited contest. The coveted title went to Chef Ann Leon, now with Sierra Nevada Taproom & Restaurant, who impressed the judges with her delicious dish. Bragging rights for the 2023 title remain to be seen (and taste-tested)!
For your enjoyment and entertainment, California Nut Festival attendees are encouraged to carve out time to watch the exciting live cooking presentations. Ample seating is available; arrive early, sit back and enjoy the demos. Names of the three competing chefs are to be announced; the schedule is as follows:

The California Nut Festival is a program of Far West Heritage Association
The Patrick Ranch Museum is honored to be hosting the 2023 California Nut Festival. The 28-acre property, donated by Hester Patrick in 2001, provides the perfect venue for this fun culinary event that draws visitors from far and near. Each year, thousands of visitors to this event appreciate the music and the many local vendors and artisans, as they wander through the beautiful gardens and grounds. Plan to enjoy entertainment on the grand porch surrounding the farm house as you taste the many offerings featured by local restaurants, breweries and wineries.
You’ll enter through the Visitor Center which features various exhibits and is the home to the Patrick Ranch Museum Gift Shop. The gift shop offers art and handcrafted items created by local artists and craftspeople as well as many products from local vendors. One-of-a-kind gifts makes this stop a must when shopping for unique gifts.
The Glenwood Farm House, built in 1877, is on the National Registry of Historic Places and the centerpiece of the Museum. The Farm House is open for guided tours Saturday and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Heritage Gardens surrounding the historic Glenwood Farm House features native plants and flowers.
The Master Gardeners of Butte County maintain a series of demonstration gardens on more than one acre of ranch land. Workshops and demonstrations are held year-round at the Patrick Ranch, a popular destination for backyard gardeners and homeowners seeking options for water conservation gardening.
The Museum continues to develop new projects. The Vintage Iron Club has made tremendous strides reaching their vision of a Vintage Iron Museum to house antique farm equipment. A small group of blacksmiths have resumed public demon-
strations on the second Saturday of each month. Although blacksmithing is a fading skill, developing an area to display original blacksmith tools and hold demonstrations is an ongoing mission. We also continue to fundraise for our Bee Museum. How lucky we are to have such wonderful partners!
Patrick Ranch Museum now offers several events throughout the year aimed at educating the public about the importance of agriculture in our community. Our next event is the 17th Annual Country Faire & Tractor Show & Tractor Pull on Saturday and Sunday, June 10th & 11th followed by Autumnfest every weekend throughout October, the Annual Holiday Artisan Faire, Gingerbread House Workshop and Holiday Tea and Farmhouse Tour in December. School field trips are held in the spring and during the month of October for elementary aged students, learning about farming practices from past generations and how agriculture has evolved over time.
Patrick Ranch Museum, an interactive agricultural museum, is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that operates with a valuable team of dedicated volunteers providing the diverse skill sets necessary for the continued success of our mission. Volunteer opportunities are available at (530) 892-1525 or by visiting our website at: patrickranchmuseum.org.

Just as the California Nut Festival is committed to connecting the community with farmers, growers and producers in the North Valley, it’s also a driving force in linking our community’s agriculture with local fine arts. As event attendees enjoy the variety of foods and beverages on the historic and beautifully manicured grounds of Patrick Ranch, they are also encouraged to visit the Artisan Faire where local artists and artisans will be displaying and selling their works. The variety of artistry this year in the Art Barn includes paintings, jewelry, handcrafted wood, handcrafted gnomes, stained glass and vases and more. And remember, all event ticket holders get an Art Barn raffle ticket, providing a chance to win art donated by participating artisans.
