Unforgettable Making Your Special Day Special
I
recently attended the wedding of the daughter of one of my oldest and dearest friends, so I could picture that smiling and sophisticated bride as a 1-month-old baby — as clearly as if it were yesterday. She is also the first girl in my daughter’s peer group to marry, and she is young, but her hopes and dreams with her handsome groom, in his navy blue suit, were touching and tangible. When she danced with her teary and emotional father, there wasn’t a dry eye in the market-lit barn. It made me realize, especially in this day and age, we need things to remind us that hope and love and happy endings still exist in the world.
So we’ve devoted our annual party guide to weddings this year, and have advice from a variety of local wedding professionals, including photographers, caterers, bakers, floral designers, musicians and entertainers. Together, they will help you make your wedding — or any event — more special and more personal, while also involving your guests in a way your day will be truly unforgettable. THEA MARIE ROOD Editor

Permanent Record Beautiful photos will let you enjoy your wedding again and again BY ANNE STOKES
A
wedding is one of the most important celebrations in a couple’s life together, one filled with family, friends and — most importantly — love. But once the day is over and the food has been eaten, your guests have gone home and your gown has been lovingly preserved in a box, the photographs of your day will let you relive those beautiful moments for years to come. Photographer Diane Clifford of Diane Nicole Photography shares some advice on how to make sure you and your photographer see eye-to-eye.
Why is wedding photography so expensive?
A lot of time, equipment, education and experience goes into creating those polished images you see on websites and social media. Operating thousands of dollars worth of specialized equipment under constantly changing conditions is a basic job requirement and post-production work takes much longer than the event itself. “There’s a lot more to the day than just coming and photographing the wedding,” Clifford says. “There’s a lot of post- [and] pre-work that you do. I think a lot of people don’t recognize that you’re doing more than just coming and taking pictures.” Generally, photographers offer several print package options at different price points. Higher costs usually involve more bells and whistles — more prints or a fancier album — not necessarily better photographs, so you can still get beautiful images and stay in your budget.
Why is it important to hire a professional?
“There’s a lot more to the day than just coming and photographing the wedding.”
Experienced wedding photographers understand how your big day should flow and can help keep your wedding party on track, a valuable resource if you don’t have a wedding coordinator. Professionals also know how to work with lighting, what poses are flattering and what type of photos will tell the “story” of your wedding day. “One of the biggest [concerns] I get right off the bat is ‘We aren’t picture people’ or ‘We don’t take good pictures,’” Clifford says. “A professional is 100%

OK with that and you should feel totally comfortable with them and how they photograph you. With a nonprofessional, you’ll probably look the way you feel in those pictures — uncomfortable.”
Find a photographer you like It’s important to do your homework before hiring a photographer. Online resources like The Knot, WeddingWire and even Google are easy ways to look through photographers’ websites to see if their style matches the type of photography you like. Photographers with a photojournalism background tend to shoot images with a candid, natural feel, while others with a traditional style create more posed and stylized photographs. Most photographers can do both. “Really check out people’s websites and you’ll get a really good feel of whether you’re connected with that person,” Clifford says. “We’re such artists and even though we provide a service, there’s still a feel of how things look.”
Tell them what you like about their photography style Once you’ve found a photographer, it’s important to communicate your likes and dislikes, expectations and your “must-have” shots. But you don’t have to get technical — pick a few examples from their website and tell them how they make you feel. “Does it feel romantic? Does it feel harsh or grungy?” Clifford says. “Romantic would be the one that I get a lot from feedback of my images, they’re more light and airy and pretty.”
When to book your photographer Spring, summer and early fall are peak wedding season. If you’re planning on a date between May and October, reach out to photographers early. “Easily a year, if not longer, especially if you know you want to get somebody who may be popular and reliable, someone you know is going to do a good job,” Clifford advises.
Don’t forget the fine print As with any professional, it’s important to have a contract in place with your photographer to ensure everyone is on the same page and knows what to expect. Contracts should include: • Names and contact information of all parties • A detailed description of the work to be done • Date, time and location of the ceremony and reception • Terms of payment, including deposit, any payment schedule and travel fees • When you can expect them to deliver your photographs • Cancellation and refund policies Diane Clifford is an award-winning photographer who has over a decade of experience making couples feel amazing on their wedding day. It’s Personal! BY NISA SMITH
Q&A with Christian & Johnson Co. floral designer, Kelsi Korhuniak, reminds that the individual touches create the wedding magic
Q:
There are an abundance of ways flowers are utilized in weddings, from bouquets and boutonnieres to the centerpieces and altars. How do you approach designing these varied floral structures?
It really depends on the wedding and what they are looking for. Some people want it to look super formal, some want it to look like it came from their grandma’s garden. It’s super personal.
With so many potential floral options, what’s a space that people shouldn’t overlook when decorating? Centerpieces! That’s where your guests are sitting for most of the time. A lot of people put [the focus on] their ceremony, but that’s only for so long. Your guests are spending most of their time at the table and it really sets the mood. Details are important too — like a few stems at the bar or cocktail table. A few flowers throughout go a long way.
Try and find things that are unique to you, for personal reasons — if you have a memory with a flower or something in your grandma’s garden. When weddings have personal meaning, it becomes more memorable rather than just picking something out of a Pinterest page.
When couples visit your shop, what’s your process for identifying and creating the perfect flower arrangements?
Texture and organic shape. Organic, like it came from the garden, rather than it being tight and formal. Also, different textures and greenery, more flowers with greens. The organic look feels more personal and intimate.
Usually Melissa Heringer, the owner, will talk with the brides. We discuss their vision. Everything is customized for a wedding; so really, you start by just talking.

hen it comes to wedding cakes, less has become more. “The big current trend right now is definitely the ‘naked’ cake,” says Emily Zimmerman, owner of Lovely Layers Cakery in Chico. “It has a really thin layer of frosting with fresh flowers as decoration.” Edible blooms and petals such as roses, pansies, carnations, chrysanthemums, marigolds and violets have taken the place of traditional frosting floral creations. “Greenery is really popular, too; nothing foofy, keep it simple,” she notes. “Right now, we’re doing a lot of cakes with eucalyptus leaves and branches.” Not only is such decoration attractive, it smells good, too.

This style of wedding cake ties in with the kind of receptions most popular in the Chico area – natural and rustic, Zimmerman says. “A reception might be in an old rustic barn. We did one last fall in a pumpkin patch with little pumpkins as decorations and accents on the cake.” Besides the fresh flowers and greenery, fondant, buttercream and gumpaste decorations can add wow factor and display the cake maker’s sugar artistry. Whether rustic or more elaborate, the wedding cake itself represents a major part of the decorations at the reception. CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

Party food: Let your guests get creative When it comes to party food, guests want a hand in it. Traditional sit-down dinners or buffet lines are being replaced by interactive food stations, the hottest trend in catered receptions. The concept takes the buffet to the next level. (Think omelet bar at brunch.) Food stations allow diners to pick and choose what (and when) they’d like to eat while also giving them some Instagram-able moments along with the food. Individually staffed by a chef, each food station gets the guests involved in putting together their dish, then the chef adds the finishing touches. Roots Catering in Chico offers several “A la Minute Stations.” “These are fun, interactive stations where your guests help to create their food memory by choosing from an assortment of ingredients to create a dish that our chefs will finish for them,” explains Kelly Gomez, Roots’ catering director. Among Roots’ station choices: dim sum, quesadilla, fresh pasta, doughnut, French fry, tempura, tostada, baked potato, crepe, Asian fried rice and noodles, and Italian soda. Roots Catering, 530-8914500, rootscatering.com
“It helps tie everything together,” Zimmerman says. Lovely Layers creates about 100 wedding cakes a year plus another 900 special occasion cakes to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and more. When estimating how big a cake to order for an event, Zimmerman offers this advice: “You don’t need an exact amount of servings. Typically, around 70-75% of your guests will want cake.” Lovely Layers prices its cakes by the serving, based on expected attendance; wedding cakes run $4 to $5.25 per guest. That’s $400 to $525 for a 100-person reception. Sheet cakes start at $1.50 per guest. A 20-year veteran cake creator, Zimmerman opened Lovely Layers about eight years ago. She studied baking EMILY ZIMMERMAN at Western Culinary Owner, Lovely Institute in Portland, Layers Cakery Oregon. “I went to culinary school right after high school,” says Zimmerman, who grew up in Paradise. “I took a section on cake decorating and I was hooked. I’ve loved it ever since.” Demand for cake flavors changes with the season, she noted. That includes wedding cakes. “In the summer, people want fresh flavors,” Zimmerman said. “We do a lot of our lemon supreme and strawberry cheesecake cakes. In the winter and fall, they want something richer: chocolate, German chocolate, red velvet, carrot and, of course, pumpkin.”
“In the summer, people want fresh flavors.”

Involve Your Guests BY THEA MARIE ROOD
T
o make your wedding unforgettable, keep your family and friends busy — especially during down times when the wedding party is taking photographs, for instance. The more people can move around the wedding venue or reception area, mingling and active, the more fun they’ll have and the more they’ll remember your special day.
Entertainers This runs the gamut, but can include comedians, artists (silhouettes, caricatures or face-painting), tarot card readers, singing waiters or strolling musicians.
Stations, Bars and Towers
If there is ample outdoor space, think giant chess, giant Jenga, croquet, space hoppers and sack races. Strictly an indoor venue? Consider a casino with roulette wheels and poker tables. If space is limited, set out board games or trivia for guests (how much do they know about the bride and groom?).
Don’t make your guests sit still at a table — let them move around to taste local wines and craft beers paired with small plates. Set up a retro cigar lounge or a speak-easy whiskey or gin bar. Allow guests to customize their dinner at a burger station, a taco bar, a dessert buffet or an ice cream cart. As the evening deepens, offer s’more makings by an outdoor fire pit or campfire. A champagne, vodka or chocolate tower all have a wow-factor too.
Kick up the Photo Booth
Dancing and Singing
Guests will love this reception staple if you supply props that fit your wedding theme and offer a touch-up station where guests can fix hair, makeup and even dust themselves in (biodegradable) glitter.
Karaoke or sing-alongs bring your guests into the experience, as do line-dancing and danceoffs. You can also surprise guests with a flash mob, a fully choreographed wedding-party dance performance, or a silent disco (music is transmitted to wireless headphones worn by the dancers).

Setting the Mood Don’t overlook the soundtrack of your special day BY ANNE STOKES
M
usic can make or break a good party (or reception), but don’t fret if you don’t know Bach from Bruno Mars: A good DJ can keep guests entertained and your party on track. “It’s not uncommon at all for a lot of folks to just not be musically inclined or know the ins and outs of every single song title or artist, says Chris Frankovich, owner and senior DJ of The Wedding DJ Company in Chico. “Some people just know, ‘I like fun music,’ that’s it. He says when it comes to booking a DJ for your wedding, it’s important to keep in mind that you’re hiring an emcee for your day too — someone who can help keep the day’s schedule moving.
“When it comes to DJs, you’re not just hiring music, you’re hiring a personality, he says. “This personality is somewhat like a director of the event. They shouldn’t be in the spotlight the whole time, but they are the host. Frankovich says it’s important to do your homework ahead of time, something that’s easy to do online with reviews on Yelp, Facebook, WeddingWire and The Knot. He notes that while some vendors don’t quote prices online, they should be upfront with their pricing packages, as well as their guidelines and requirements for booking, including contract details. important to also meet with the DJ who will be at your event, not just the owner of the company. “I’d be leery of companies that tell you, ‘Well, we don’t know at this time,’ or ‘That will be assigned the week of your wedding,’” he says. “That’s unacceptable.” Even though entertainment is an important part of your wedding and reception, Frankovich says it’s often one of the last vendors booked. “When the wedding happens, couples and their guests realize how important the music and that direction, that emcee, is. It’s pretty vital,” Frankovich says. “If you want to get the best service, especially if there’s a specific service you’re looking to, I would say book as soon as possible. For instance, we’re now booking into October 2021 already.” Most importantly, Frankovich says couples should know a DJ is there to help make their wedding a day to remember. “It’s the DJ’s job to take the ingredients handed to them and mold it into a fun party for everybody,” he says.
