TABLE OF CONTENTS 2019/2020

here’s no shortage of dining and nightlife options for those looking for a good meal or just a good time in Chico. Whether you’re on the hunt for the perfect eggs Benedict, fish and chips or bloody Mary, you’ll find it here—and have a fun time in the process. For the adventurous, there are also more unusual menu options like curried goat, sushi burritos and cabeza tacos—even fried alligator! With a ton of farms, ranches and orchards in our backyard, Chico is home to an array of restaurants that focus on farm-to-fork dining—which means menus that change with the seasons. Many have put an effort, too, into creative dishes for vegetarians and vegans—something we highlight in this guide, on page 6. If you like live music, gambling or catching the big game with friends, Chico’s bar scene has you covered. And if it’s a food truck rally or beer and wine tasting you’re after, you’re in luck there, too (check out a calendar of events on page 26). Enjoy!

Vegetarian delights
Chico restaurants get creative with their meatless menus by

ot too many years ago, eating vegetarian meant a steady diet of bean sprouts, tofu and sunflower seeds. Thankfully, our foodie culture has begun to catch up to changing appetites, so eating meat-free doesn’t have to equal boring anymore. Fact is, over 8 million Americans are currently vegetarian while another 1 million are strictly vegan. Add to that the number of people cutting down on their meat consumption and you’ve got a huge demand for meatless food options. I’m not talking about meals that simply “leave the meat off,” but rather innovative, healthy, seasonal dishes full of flavor and variety. California is home to a diverse range of fruits and vegetables, grains, seeds and nuts that go beyond lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes. As a vegetarian for 30-plus years, I want to give a grateful shout-out to the local restaurants that are doing it right. OM Foods on Broadway slings some of the most creative, reliably tasty vegan

and vegetarian food in town, boasting one heck of a deal with its Avo Toast. For about $5, you get easily three-quarters of an avocado atop a thick slice of toasted, local bread with four options: BLTA-style, the Greek, the Philly or the Veggie Delight. These things are so hefty you have to eat them with a fork, people! And that is just the tip of the iceberg. The menu offers seasoned tempeh and tofu, healthy produce like beets and kale, all kinds of yummy sauces and even house-made vegan cheese! I highly recommend the Slawchos with corn chips, red cabbage slaw, rice, beans, salsa and avocado, slathered in cilantro and chipotle sauce and topped with cashew cheese. At Live Life Juice Co., just down the street, you can find first-rate, mostly raw, vegan treats. In addition to healthy juices and nut milks, there’s a cold case filled with salads, dips and sauces, including a kale Caesar, zucchini noodles with peanut sauce or pumpkin seed pesto, and spicy sunflower seed spread. Vegan soft-serve and desserts like key lime pie and chocolate mousse make this a one-stop shop. Another great lunch option is Ike’s Place in college town on West Fifth Street, which boasts a huge list of vegan sandwiches with fake meats and cheeses—they even have vegan fried chicken!

Aonami Sustainable Sushi on Second Street has a large vegan menu that includes imaginative rolls with tofu, pumpkin, asparagus, beets, almond butter and pineapple. My favorite is the 5th Street, with tempura yam, avocado and a sweet chili glaze. There is beet carpaccio with crispy fried carrots; cucumber noodles with shitake dust and sesame; the veggie gyoza are to-die-for; the miso soup is complimentary; and they have a killer happy hour with cheap beer. The Rawbar, on Broadway near the City Plaza, also offers delicious vegan rolls—my standby is the Crispy Lemon, with tempura long bean, serrano chili, avocado, lemon and cilantro. And check out the build-your-own rice bowl at Momona, downtown on West Third—for about eight bucks you get a generous portion of sushi rice topped with miso-dressed greens, house-made pickles, shaved veggies and hoisin-drenched sautéed tofu. For most vegetarians, the garden burger has gone the way of “Hammer Pants.” Who wants a flavorless wheat-based patty when restaurants and bars in most cities are making their own burgers out of beets, beans, grains and vegetables? Thankfully, there are a few places in town that are treating the veggie burger with the respect it deserves. The Banshee, on Second Street, now offers the
legendary Impossible Burger that I can personally attest is worth the highticket price. This is a savory, juicy patty served on a toasted, buttered bun with all the fixings that will make you moan out loud. Unwined Kitchen + Bar on Mangrove makes its own veggie burger and the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Taproom has long served up its famous lentil-pecan burger. Bill’s Towne Lounge on Main Street also has joined the burger race with its new saucy vegan barbecue sliders. Add to that an amazing yet simple goat cheese, cheddar, green chili and sautéed mushroom quesadilla served with salsa verde, cheesy grits with mushrooms and greens, and a flavorful white bean dip with crusty grilled bread, and Bill’s, relatively new in Chico, is raising the bar for bar food in town. The plight of the vegetarian often comes down to two things: going out to eat at nice restaurants and being forced to make a meal out of a side salad and mashed potatoes, and the dreaded breakfast, especially if you don’t eat eggs. There are a few superheroes doing the work to create thoughtful vegetarian dishes that are delicious on their own terms. On East Sixth Street, near the Pageant Theatre, Tender Loving Coffee’s cafe is bringing it with brunch and dinner. Weekends you will find a vegan-

centered menu with options like vegan shakshuka and fresh biscuits while their daily menu boasts Shiitake Street Tacos and roasted Brussels sprouts glazed with miso and furikake to die for. A few blocks over on Humboldt Avenue is Café Coda, which serves up a tasty range of tofu scrambles for breakfast and a separate vegan menu featuring spicy chilaquiles and more. This list would not be complete without giving a shout-out to a few new pop-up spots gaining a big following among vegetarians: Near and Dear Vegan Baked Goods makes breakfast and lunch fare such as a roasted asparagus sandwich with caramelized onions, lemon aioli, roasted garlic hummus and clover sprouts; Tacos Borrego cooks up tacos stuffed with cauliflower, onions and Brussels sprouts for its veggie fans; and plant-based Pizza Riot touts a rad menu with cashew ricotta-stuffed flower-shaped calzones, pies topped with maple “bacon” and fun sauces like spicy buffalo and cilantro-lime. Chico is growing and the food scene is growing along with it, but vegan and vegetarian food has been too long kept on a shelf, relegated to bland meat replacements and lazy frozen veggie burgers. The restaurants on this list are invigorating the local culinary landscape by utilizing the abundance of fresh produce, cheese, olives, nuts, beans and grains that this area has to offer and building innovative recipes that help raise the level of our small city eats. Popeye would be proud. ●

The Bacio Story began in 1984
as a wholesale ravioli and pasta company. Selling her goods at local and regional stores opened doors to restaurants and questions about how best to serve her products. This led to parties and, next thing she knew, a catering company had been born. Fast forward thousands of events later; weddings, galas, retirement parties and company soirees… Amanda has surrounded herself with teams of people with the same passion for the party and desire to always do better. The Bacio Carry Out and Eatery opened 11 years ago. They now have a happy following of food lovers filling their refrigerators with healthy, local favorites or enjoying a meal on the patio out back. Naturally, everything is created from scratch; the menu reflects the season and includes many vegetarian, vegan and gluten free dishes as well as classic comforts. The latest project at Bacio is their philanthropic pop-up dinner series called Feed Your Soul. The chosen beneficiaries are civic minded and value equality for all people. These events come together over beautiful food and raising money for the Common Good in the community – upwards of $40,000 over the last few years! “Giving back to this town that has supported and loved us all these years is the icing on the cake.” Here’s to Chico and the special place that it is.
