It’s our hope that the Farm City events foster the community’s understanding of what’s needed to bring abundant, safe, and diverse food to everyone’s plate. Whether we consumers prefer organic or conventionally-grown food and fiber, they require many of the same components.

Water, land, labor, transportation, disease- and pest-control are key.

We are fortunate to live in an area that can produce a wide variety of products, but some of these vital components are under attack— although well meaning. The State Water Resources Control Board recently released the Bay-Delta Water Quality Control Plan’s Supplemental Environmental Document (SED). Details in the SED confirm that the Water Board’s Plan will leave thousands of acres of farmland with zero surface supply in certain water years, stripping the Central Valley of over 6,500 jobs and $1.6 billion in economic output. The Water Board plans to implement a similar plan for the Sacramento River and the North Valley. These decisions will take land out of production, reduce locally grown food, cut jobs and raise food cost, while not benefitting the fish in any significant way.

It is a goal of the Farm City Celebration to strengthen the relationship and understanding between agriculture and the urban community so that issues can be resolved without devastating our industry or way of life. Agriculture is dedicated to both a healthy environment for fish and wildlife, and a thriving agricultural industry.

With sound science, and increased water storage we can have both.

The Farm City Celebration is a collaborative effort by many organizations, businesses and individuals who value agriculture and above all want to promote a positive relationship between agricultural and urban communities.

Our Farm City Celebration originated in 1979 when the local chapter of California Women for Agriculture hosted a tasting of local products inside a bank in Chico. The Butte County Cattlewomen were the first to partner with CWA to help staff the tastings.This year’s events are made possible through all the partners involved including CWA, Butte County Farm Bureau, Butte County Ag Commissioner, UC Cooperative Extension, Butte County Cattlemen and Cattlewomen, Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park, CSU Chico and Butte College Agriculture programs, Butte County Young Farmers & Ranchers and countless volunteers.

The Farm City Celebration Committee is bringing three events to you this year: Kids’ Day on the Farm, the Harvest Festival and the AgriBusiness Bus Tour, plus our restaurant program which has grown to 9 participating eateries this year for the entire month of November.

November 1st is Kids’ Day on the Farm with 500 third graders excited to learn about agriculture. Our Harvest Festival is Saturday, November 3rd at Bidwell Mansion, a rain or shine event for the whole family, full of agricultural activities.

The Agribusiness Bus tour on November 7 has some wonderful stops planned in the Oroville area of Butte County, followed by a yummy lunch of barrel cooked chicken, rice, and salad, at the CSUC Farm.

We would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who have supported the Farm City Celebration this year and over the past 39 years. With your financial support, we are able to join together farmers, ranchers and consumers to foster a deeper understanding of the issues between farm and city.

FARM CITY CELEBRATI Schedule of Events Kid’s Day at the CSU, Chico University Farm Thursday, November 1st PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED Location: the 800-acre Paul L. Byrne Agricultural Teaching and Research Center (aka University Farm) Local third graders visit eight different stations learning about many agricultural products and activities that happen around our area. Topics include learning how to milk a cow, the importance of pest control, and water supply. At the pizza station, kids learn all the ingredients required to make a pizza, and then get a little sample fresh out of the oven. The Butte County Agriculture Department has been providing a pest-detecting dog for the last few years, with his impressive detecting ability that entertains the group. Farm City Celebration Agri-Business Bus Tour and Lunch Wednesday, November 7th CSU Chico University Farm Tickets include coffee and pastries for breakfast, visits to five local farms and agribusinesses, fabulous barrel chicken lunch, and entertainment. The tour will visit: Sierra Pacific Industries lumber mill to hear about forest management; Pacific Coast Producers fresh fruit cannery; Look Ahead Veterinary Services focusing on both large and small animals; Butte County Agricultural Commissioner & Sealer of Weights and Measures; and Morse Farms Mandarins producing citrus and citrus products. There will be tractors on display, 4-H, cattle roping, cow milking, Boy Scout Rope Bridge and so much more.

We are so fortunate to have the Harvest Festival on the grounds of the Historic Bidwell Mansion. During the event, visitors can browse through the first floor of the Bidwell Mansion! Staff and volunteers will be there to answer questions. The Visitor Center will be open including “The General’s Store” gift shop, exhibit hall and bathrooms.

The Carriage House will be open, displaying historic carriages and wagons.

he Farm City Celebration’s 2018 Restaurant Program highlights local eateries that support local agriculture. All of these restaurants have a commitment to sourcing locally when possible to support local farmers while turning our region’s agricultural offerings into culinary delights.

The amazing diversity of local crops range from almonds, rice, walnuts, olives and stone fruits such as peaches, apricots and plums, to a large variety of fresh vegetables, local meats, cheeses, olive oils and wines. Restaurants and cafés are an important market sector for farmers who sell their products locally.
