Welcome to the 37th Annual Farm City Celebration, Nov. 2-11, 2017!

T

he Farm City Celebration Committee is excited to share all of our events with you this year! We are partnering with the Butte County Young Farmers and Ranchers to host the always popular Dinner Dance and our Annual Awards Reception on Saturday, November 11th., at the Sierra Nevada Big Room. Our Restaurant Program has added wonderful participants this year, with eight restaurants participating for the entire month of November. The Agribusiness Bus tour has some interesting stops planned this year in the southeast area of Butte County. November 2nd is Kids’ Day on the Farm with 500 third graders excited to learn all about agriculture. Our Harvest Festival on November 4th at Bidwell Mansion looks to be a wonderful event, with lots of agricultural activities for the whole family.

The Farm City Celebration Committee would like to thank you for joining us to celebrate agriculture! It is our hope that the Farm City events help the consumer to understand what it takes to put abundant, safe, and diverse food on grocery store shelves, and ultimately on your dinner plate. We are fortunate to live in an area that has the ability to produce a wide variety of products for our consumption, but water, labor, land, transportation, disease- and pest-control are essential elements to food and fiber production. The understanding of agriculture activities by the urban population is vital to our agricultural way of life and ability to produce the food and fiber we all need. It is a goal of the Farm City Celebration to strengthen the relationship between agriculture and the urban community, through education about agriculture, while addressing the consumer’s concerns.

The Farm City Celebration is a collaborative effort by many organizations, businesses and individuals who value agriculture and above all want to promote a positive relationship between members of the agricultural and urban communities.

We would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who have supported the Farm City Celebration this year and over the past 37 years. With your financial support, we are able to bring together farmers, ranchers and consumers to foster a deeper understanding

of the issues between farm and city.

Our Farm City Celebration originated in 1979 when the local chapter of California Women for Agriculture did a “tasting” of local products inside a bank in Chico. The Butte County Cattlewomen were the first to partner with CWA to help staff the tastings. The events this year are made possible through all the partners involved including CWA, Butte County Farm Bureau, Butte County Ag Commissioner, UC Cooperative Extension, Butte County Cattlemen and Cattlewomen, Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park, CSU Chico and Butte College Agriculture programs, Butte County Young Farmers & Ranchers and countless volunteers.

We hope to see many of you at the Harvest Festival, on the bus tour and kicking up your heals to “Northern Traditionz” at the dinner dance. Please visit our website for more information and tickets. ●

Farm City Celebratio Schedule of Events Kid’s Day at the CSU, Chico University Farm Thursday, November 2nd PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED Location: the 800-acre Paul L. Byrne Agricultural Teaching and Research Center (aka University Farm) Local third graders visit eight different stations learning about many of the agricultural products and activities that go on around our area. Topics include learning how to milk a cow, and the importance of pest control, and water supply. At the pizza station, the kids learn all the ingredients it takes to make a pizza, and then they get a little sample fresh out of the oven. The Butte County Agriculture Department has been able to bring a pest detecting dog for the last few years, and his detecting ability has been very impressive and entertaining for the group.

Farm City Celebration Agri-Business Bus Tour and Lunch Wednesday, November 8th Chico University Farm, California State University Bus Tour participants will be treated to a continental breakfast at the Chico State Farm before boarding 5 buses touring five local farms and agricultural businesses. Stops include: Lundberg Family Farms (rice processing operation), Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, Deseret Farms of California (pecan orchard management), 4 Corners Almond Hulling and Shelling, and Sohnrey Family Foods (prune orchard management). At the end of the tour everyone will enjoy a lunch of Barrel Cooked Chicken and CWA rice.

Tickets are sold out.

Awards Reception & Dinner-Dance Saturday, Nov. 11th, 6pm We’re excited to be back working with Sierra Nevada who hosted our awards reception for many years! This year working with the Butte County Young Farmers & Ranchers, our awards reception and dinner dance at the Sierra Nevada Big Room will be a wonderful event. Music by the talented Northern Traditionz.

Social Hour and Awards Reception start at 6 p.m. Dinner at 7 p.m.

Dancing at 8 p.m.

Harvest Festival

Saturday, Nov. 4th, 10 am–2 pm, Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park, 525 Esplanade, Chico The Harvest Festival is a FREE for the whole family This rain or shine event includes fun agricultural-related hands on activities, food and lots more. We are bringing the farm to the city for this community agriculture day.

There will be tractors on display, 4-H, cattle roping, cow milking, bees, Boy Scout Rope Bridge and so much more.

We are so fortunate to have the Harvest Festival on the grounds of the Historic Bidwell Mansion. During the event, visitors can browse through the first floor of the Bidwell Mansion! Staff and volunteers will be there to answer questions. The Visitor Center will be open including “The General’s Store” gift shop, exhibit hall and bathrooms.

The Carriage House will be open, displaying historic carriages and wagons.

Here is your chance to interact with farm animals.

Chico 4-H Club will have an petting zoo; you can pet bunnies, chickens, sheep, goats and more. Don’t forget to milk “Buttercup” the cow provided by California Women for Agriculture Rope Bridge, Demonstrations and Carriage Rides Come enjoy the Boy Scouts Troop 2 Rope Bridge in front on the mansion. This year two rope bridges will be built, a must experience event for kids of all ages. Butte County Cattlewomen will have an interactive roping demonstration for your little cowboy or cowgirl! TJ Farms Carriage Company will be having carriage rides for a special event price.

he Farm City Celebration’s 2017 Restaurant Program is back highlighting local eateries in our community that are committed to supporting local agriculture. Farm City Celebration aims to increase an understanding of agriculture’s immense value to the urban community, and to show its importance to all who live in Chico, as well as the surrounding communities.

We are so fortunate to have a diversity of crops ranging from almonds, rice, walnuts, olives and stone fruits such as peaches, apricots and plums, to a large variety of fresh vegetables, local meats, cheeses and wines. Restaurants and cafés are an important market sector for farmers who sell their products locally.

During this year’s celebration, you can visit the restaurants listed here to find a variety of dishes prepared Bacio’s Harvest Melée with farm-fresh products grown right here in the North Valley.

All of these restaurants have a commitment to sourcing locally when possible to support local farmers and at the same time turning our region’s agricultural offerings into culinary delights.
