Guns again

Amendment exemption

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Came in to this message on my voicemail today: “Yeah, Brian, I have a response to your Editor’s Note responding to R. Richard’s letter to you stating, ‘No disrespect intended’ and then a bunch of gobbledygook about the Second Amendment: George Mason, the co-author of the Second Amendment, clearly stated that the ‘militia’ meant ‘the people at large.’ It didn’t mean the state militias, and the Supreme Court has ruled as recently as 2010 that the states do not have the right to infringe on the individual’s ability to own those guns. So I expect a retraction or … I’m going to be looking at legal action against you. Do you understand? You better get it straight. We know who you are. We know what’s going on. You’re not going to pull this shit anymore.”

Yes, anonymous caller, I will acknowledge that I can find a few quotes on the Internet from George Mason on that topic. The quotes I’ve seen come mostly from the debate surrounding the 1788 Virginia Ratifying Convention. I’ve also seen arguments that the Second Amendment refered specifically to the state regulated “slave patrols” in Southern states, especially because George Mason, Patrick Henry and James Madison were all slaveowners. I can also find lots of quotes from people with loftier motives. But that’s not what I was talking about.

When I said, “this interpretation is hardly supported by history,” I meant there was no Supreme Court interpretation of an “individual right” until 2008’s District of Columbia v.

Heller and then the one you refer to, McDonald v. Chicago in 2010. That’s 220 years of historical data. My statement, “the Second Amendment … does not guarantee individual rights to own guns without regulation,” is still accurate.

Of course you know who I am. I believe this debate about guns in this country can be cordial.

Re “Editor’s Note” and “We’ll go with that” (Letters to the Editor, Jan. 31 and Feb. 7): George Washington said the Second Amendment is second in importance only to the Constitution because it is the “People’s Liberty Teeth”! The Preamble to the Bill of Rights, which is not taught in schools, “exempts” the first 10 amendments from the amendment provisions of the Constitution; this is the only reason the states agreed to the Constitution. You can Google the right to keep and bear arms report of the Subcommittee on the Constitution of the Committee on Judiciary United States Senate, 97th Congress (1981-82).

It shows that courts and government have studied the meaning of the Second Amendment from all perspectives and concluded that every private individual has the natural right to carry firearms. “People own the government, or the government owns the citizen.”

Heller in 2008 was where the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the right to keep and bear arms is an individual right that does not require militia membership. By the way, Heller was/is a Washington, D.C., policeman, not a Nevada politician.

Unfortunately the recent, abhorrent Citizens United decision by the five GOP appointees to the Supreme Court removes almost all limits on the amounts of political propaganda to which we are subjected. (Note that political propaganda is not subject to truth in advertising laws). This decision by the Court fails to protect the American electorate and must be overturned. The second threat of a “despotic” government to our electoral process comes from electronic voting.

Instead of focusing on the unlikely possibility that some illegal alien might risk deportation or jail to cast one relatively meaningless vote, we should be focused on the electronic voting system which Sen. Heller [as Nevada secretary of state] implemented locally and the GOP implemented nationally in 2002.

In doing so they took away the ability of American citizens to monitor the counting of our votes. The software that runs these machines is private proprietary property and is immune from inspection by government officials. The so-called verifiable paper trail which is supposed to mirror the electronic votes is immune from an audit by the public. Only in cases where victory margins are less than half a percent is a candidate allowed to request an audit (at no cost) of the electronic votes and paper trail. And then only 5 percent of the electronic vote is sampled and compared to the so called paper trail. This audit is done by a private committee appointed by the county commissioners.

At no time is the so called verifiable paper trail available for review by the public. Both Heller and Brower’s recent victory margins were in a range that could have been easily flipped without detection. This kind of uncertainty fuels speculation that our government may indeed be illegitimate and should be overthrown by force. The voter ID requirement is just a false flag by the right to divert attention from the real threat to our democracy that electronic voting presents. Sounds delish Re “How are the resolutions going?”

(Streetalk, Feb. 7): A torte is a rich, usually multilayered, cake that is filled with whipped cream, buttercreams, mousses, jams, or fruits. Ordinarily, the cooled torte is glazed and garnished. A torte may be made with little to no flour, but instead with ground nuts or breadcrumbs, as well as sugar, eggs, and flavorings.

One of the people in Streettalk is described as a ‘torte claims manager.’

Perhaps you meant tort, instead.

Right interpretation Re “Editor’s Note” (Letters to the Editor, Jan. 31): In your Editor’s note you state that the militias referred to in our Constitution referred to “state militias.” Who on earth do you think “the militias” were made of? There was no National Guard in those times. The militias (which, in part, were the founding of our National Guard) were made of citizens like me who were called upon to take our own weapons, livestock and supplies, and defend our people. Hence, the rest of the introduction of the Second Amendment that you conveniently omitted, “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

The “shall not be infringed” is most often interpreted as meaning the right of the people to bear arms shall not be infringed. It is a small minority view typically confined to left-leaning law programs like the Boalt School of Law at Berkeley and the New York Times that claims that the Second Amendment refers only to militias.

Guns are good for business On a recent trip to California, local TV had all the democratic California legislators on talking about how they were going to set the example for having the toughest gun laws in the nation. Then the next story was about how ridiculous it was for Texas Gov. Rick Perry to be visiting San Francisco and trying to lure in new companies to move from California to Texas. Tough gun laws, just another reason for the mass exodus from California, high taxes, higher regulations led by liberal leaders that has taken the Golden State to all time lows in fiscal responsibility.

Above the law

No. We always have a nice February for a period of time but no, winter’s not over.

Legislators are elected to represent their constituents, not to be superior to them. But we’ve already seen many examples in this session of the Nevada Legislature that show that this is not the case. Legislators aren’t just treated as belonging to a class above their constituents, they appear to be of a class above the law.

Absurdly, this session seems more like a comic book movie than a deliberate legislative body. It’s easy to imagine the Sylvester Stallone version of Judge Joseph Dredd coming to the floor and shouting, “That’s a lie.

The evidence has been falsified. It’s impossible. I never broke the law. I am the law.”

And while it’s not all that surprising that lawmakers would want to imagine themselves as somehow superior to the rules they create, we see through its inaction that the executive branch also feels that way.

It doesn’t take the most imaginative person to guess what would happen to the average person—mentally ill, in the throes of addiction, or with a brain tumor the size of a grapefruit—who physically struggled with Las Vegas police. He or she would, at minimum, be constrained with extreme prejudice, and more likely, would be admitted to a hospital or morgue long before visiting the Clark County Detention Facility.

And to go for a cop’s gun? Can we at least agree that a person who was not an elected official would be at least formally charged with a crime?

As of this writing, Steven Brooks has still not been formally charged with any crime, despite the fact that he’s been arrested twice for behavior that is at least potentially violent. How fast would an average citizen be strapped down to a chair to have blood removed for toxicology and internal possession tests if he or she OPINION

were accused of attacking his or her spouse, attacking a police officer or threatening an elected official?

Why is Brooks above the law?

Then we’ve got the Select Committee on the Assembly adopting rules that allow Chair William Horne to obstruct Brooks from carrying out Brooks’ duly elected and sworn duties. The Nevada Constitution does allow the house to discipline its members, but it requires a two-thirds vote of all the assemblymembers to do so— not some committee. There has been no such vote. Horne is just making up rules of convenience. Brooks hasn’t been convicted of any crime.

Why is Horne above the law?

And that brings us to our third example: Assemblymember Andrew Martin. Even before the election, District Court Judge Rob Bare found that Andrew Martin was not an actual resident of Assembly District 9.

Somehow, the Assembly is acting as the sole arbiter of election law, allowing Martin to represent a district he didn’t even live in at the time of his election. Assuming the court findings are true and Clark County voter registration documents are accurate, Martin’s not only representing a constituency he doesn’t belong to, but he also voted in Assembly District 9 on Oct. 21. (And by the way, isn’t it revealing that it’s a felony for regular citizens to lie on voter registration forms, but it’s a gross misdemeanor for candidates to lie on candidacy paper?)

Why is Martin above the law?

It’s easy to see why members of the Assembly wouldn’t want to enforce laws upon their own members, but why aren’t enforcement officials acting? We have a separation of powers in the branches of government specifically to prevent these types of special treatment. Ω IN ROTATION

Back to the gold mine You have to hand it to the Dominican Republic when it comes to negotiating mining taxes. According to press reports last month, Barrick Mining agreed to pay $11 billion in tax revenue from one mine during its contract period. The deal includes a percentile distribution so both parties benefit as the price of gold goes up. Dominican politicians by Sheila Leslie are already competing with each other to renegotiate the contract to increase tax revenue as the mine’s worth has increased to $60 billion.

Compare this situation to Nevada, the fourth largest gold producer in the world, with a special provision in the state constitution mandating mining tax policy. Consider that in FY 2011-12, Nevada’s gold mines produced $8.76 billion in gold and paid $104 million to the state’s General Fund under the special Net Proceeds of Minerals (NPOM) tax, for an effective tax rate of 1 percent.

Contrast that meager amount with the Dominican deal where Barrick will pay the government 3.2 percent of gross production, 25 percent

for income tax, and 8.75 percent from net earnings or $11 billion in revenue.

When these figures were presented to a community group last week, the woman next to me muttered what we all were thinking: “Are we stupid?”

There is no hope of renegotiating how mining is taxed in Nevada unless the special provision protecting the industry is removed from the state’s constitution. While the industry insists the NPOM tax is a property tax, it acts like an income tax, allowing deductions for all sorts of things with the net effect of some mines actually paying zero in NPOM taxes. Zero. Until a few loopholes were closed last session, the mines could even deduct the cost of their dues to the World Gold Council, an industry marketing organization.

Other states tax mining differently, through severance taxes, excise taxes and the like. Mining companies also have to pay a

corporate profits tax in every state but South Dakota, Wyoming, and, naturally, Nevada. In other countries, the industry often pays a royalty tax when they mine public lands as a method of compensating the real owners of the gold.

In the 2011 session, the Legislature started the process of removing the sweetheart tax deal from the state constitution by passing Senate Joint Resolution 15. To continue the five-year process of amending the state constitution, SJR 15 must pass again in 2013 and then go to a vote of the people.

It is clear the industry has literally billions of dollars at risk should this resolution pass and has been sparing no expense in campaign contributions, charitable donations, public relations campaigns, and lobbyists gearing up for the battle this session. They know they need to kill it now before the public votes.

A quick review of the lobbyist list last week revealed 24 registered lobbyists for mining, exceeding the number of state senators by three.

And the president of the Nevada Mining Association and three other prominent mining lobbyists hadn’t even registered yet. As one seasoned observer noted, “Mining is prepared to spend millions to save billions in taxes.”

Although SJR 15 was approved by the 2011 Legislature on votes of 13 to 8 in the State Senate and 27 to 15 in the Assembly, there are private messages circulating that the measure is already dead.

The mining industry has a head-spinning answer to every argument and a way of explaining the net proceeds tax and the danger presented by SJR 15 that is designed to confuse. And if those arguments don’t work, they will quickly resort to the tried and true mega-threat: If their constitutionally-protected deal is changed, they’ll go mine gold elsewhere, taking their boom and bust jobs and generous campaign contributions with them.

Like the Dominican Republic, perhaps. Ω

A Libertarian guide to the legislature With the initial meetings of Nevada’s 77th legislative session underway, the state has a lot to anticipate. A wide range of issues will be tackled with 170 bills already introduced for this legislative period. The Legislature can look forward to dealing with everything from transportation issues by to creating a committee to review Chanelle Bessette suicide fatalities to taxes on live entertainment to re-legalizing online gaming. Every shade of gray (or black, as in the case of prohibiting the hunting of black bears) is going to be game for legislation.

The following is a short list of issues to be on the look out for as the 2013 legislative session progresses: 1. Taxes: A revitalization and restructuring of Nevada’s tax system is on the table this year. With the possibility of taxes increasing for businesses, Nevada could be in for its share of debates about a) whether voters will actually approve the increases or b) whether they do or don’t, how will Nevada fund many of its programs (such as education)?

However, a services tax is another

potential increase being debated and may be used in place of a business tax. Nevada’s tax system is a major draw for those who move here. As I’ve mentioned in previous columns, it’s essential to keep taxes low as a way to draw in businesses that can create jobs and to stimulate the economy by passing on the savings to employees who then go out and spend money. While it is admirable that Gov. Brian Sandoval has not yet suggested budget cuts, if there is the possibility of reducing the funding of excessive or inefficient programs, then doing so would be an alternative to tax hikes.

2. Education: It appears that charter schools are taking a larger part in legislative discussion in 2013.

Several bills have been introduced to determine how state resources will be allocated for charter schools, such as how charter schools will be allowed to use state buildings, as well as what kind of performance tests will be used to determine their

effectiveness. With greater support for charter schools, we can predict a shift over the next several years in how Nevada’s education system will adapt to new styles of learning. In addition, this may be an important step forward in breaking free from the iron-clad hold that teacher’s unions have on the ability to fire ineffective educators.

3. Drug regulation: With drug laws becoming more and more liberalized across the U.S., Nevada’s own substance laws are in a prime position for discussion. Colorado and Washington legalized marijuana after the 2012 elections, and with its current decriminalized possession status and medical use allowances, Nevada ought to follow suit. The new, extremely lucrative source of tax revenue would not only provide large amounts of funding for Nevada’s important programs, it would expand the individual liberties of Nevada’s citizens.

In the April 2012 edition of the University of Chicago Undergraduate Law Review,

student Sean McClelland (from Incline Village) wrote about the unique position of Nevada’s institutional law structure: “As with gaming and prostitution, the Nevada institutional structure has correctly determined that liberalization and legalization of fringe activities ultimately will produce results such as an increased technological interest in the state. The bureaucratic structure effectively regulates activities to ensure their safety while reaping the economic rewards of innovative social policy.”

With that legacy in mind, the Nevada Legislature has its work cut out for it. It appears that 2013’s list of bills will attempt to tackle many issues that range across a wide spectrum of policies. From personal freedoms to economic ones, we can only hope that our Legislature’s aim will not only be cooperation but a greater expansion of the core values of the Nevadan spirit: those of deregulation, individual liberty and personal responsibility. Ω

Leo McFadden 1928-2013 When Leo McFadden was a boy, a bishop came to the McFadden home to recruit his brother for the priesthood. His mother said, “Leo will make a much better priest.”

When St. Albert’s church and school were located across the street from the university, McFadden told that story to one of his parishioners over her kitchen table. He was then in his first decade as a Reno priest. He would become a familiar figure over many kitchen tables of local Catholic families who are mourning him this week.

Born in Portland and raised in Las Vegas—his father worked on the Boulder Dam project—he began serving as a Nevada priest just two years after his ordination, continuing for nearly six decades, minus a period in the early 1970s when he worked in Rome.

McFadden performed innumerable baptisms, weddings, funerals and other ceremonies for a couple of generations of local Catholics.

Many who knew him as children in the 1950s and 1960s continued calling him “Father McFadden” until the end of his life, though he had long since become a monsignor.

In February 1957, the Reno Gazette-Journal carried a photo of McFadden ministering in the street to victims of a gas explosion in downtown Reno that killed two and injured 49. The newspaper also carried his column for many years, written in free verse, all lower case. McFadden was a prolific writer and edited the nowdefunct Nevada Register, the newspaper of the Diocese of Reno, as the Catholic territory that encompassed the entire state was then known.

John Livermore 1918-2013 Carlin Trend and Getchell Trend discoverer John Livermore has died. Using ideas and techniques of U.S. Geological Survey geologist Ralph J. Roberts, Livermore and another Newmont mines geologist, Alan Coope, in 1961 found a site laced with minute amounts of gold.

Livermore later left Newmont to form his own company, Cordex, and established several other mines of the same kind of “invisible” gold, leading to the discovery of the Getchell Trend.

The discoveries made Nevada the world’s fourth largest gold producer, and while no reliable figure is available, in 1989 they were estimated to have generated more than 90 million ounces of gold.

He was involved in mining politics and failed in an effort to reform the Mining Law of 1872 in a way that the industry could support. He contributed to campaigns of Nevada politicians from Chic Hecht to Barbara Vucanovich to Jim Gibbons. One of the few Democrats who got his support was Nick Rahall of the mining state of West Virginia.

Reno man named in suit A Reno man involved in an attempt to bring back “traditional” boy scouting has been named in a San Francisco lawsuit.

In a Jan. 30 filing, Coast Guard veteran Mark Dietrich sued former scoutmaster Gary Hatfield and a regional Boy Scouts council, alleging Hatfield molested him between 1978 and 1981 and that it happened “despite knowledge of Hatfield’s dangerous propensities and unfitness.” The suit claims that local and regional Boy Scout officials knew of the abuse.

Hatfield, a Reno apartment maintenance worker, was quoted by KTVU in Oakland denying the charges and adding, “That’s a joke.”

In 2004, Hatfield was promoting the “Confederate Scouts of America,” a group described in its leaflets as “‘back to basics,’ with pride, honor, respect, and discipline.”

He said at the time (“Back to scouting basics?” RN&R, Nov. 11, 2004) that he did not consider the use of the term Confederate to be inflammatory: ‘I mean, whatever happened 150 years ago is no problem of mine, you know, whether it was the act of slavery or whoever broke away from who. ... The only thing is, we’re going with gray uniforms. ... And we’ve gone back to the 1959 version of the [BSA] handbook.”

Soft sell Obama tries a new approach to nuclear waste storage The new Nevada Legislature has plenty on its plate this year, and its members probaby bly would be happy not to have to Dennis Myers deal again with the proposed dump for high level nuclear wastes at Yucca Mountain in Nye County. But the issue is repeatedly raising its head.

• President Obama’s administration announced on Jan. 11 that it will search for a new permanent site for nuclear waste storage with a target date of 2048, with temporary dumps slated for 2021 and 2025, essentially consigning Yucca to the past.

• Obama’s energy secretary, Steven Chu, resigned after four years

wants the economic activity the Yucca dump would bring), a court ruling is impending on whether the Obama administration can forced to move forward with development of the Yucca Mountain repository.

• Four leading U.S. Senators with nuclear power ties are working in an informal group on nuclear waste legislation.

• U.S. Rep. John Shimkus of Illinois, a state with 11 nuclear power facilities, said he will not— as chair of a key House subcommittee— allow the Senate group’s waste management bill to pass the House without a clause designating Yucca Mountain as a repository.

• Leading Eastern newspapers editorialized on Yucca.

• In Idaho, a state commission said the state has an opportunity for “significant industrial opportunity” by helping the federal government with waste storage, a finding endorsed by Gov. Bruce Otter.

• In a lawsuit filed by states with nuclear power plants, utility regulators and Nye County in Nevada (which

Commission on America’s Nuclear Future, which called for a “consent based” storage site, essentially proposing a less adversarial site search than that which produced Yucca.

Energy industry spokespeople responded angrily. Steve Skutnik wrote on his energy industry-sponsored blog, “If one is to unilaterally dismantle nearly three decades of standing policy of nuclear waste disposal policy, a little more should be expected in terms of an alternative.

The [Obama] report would not be it.”

The Senate group includes Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden (whose state has the highly polluted Hanford nuclear site on its border), Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander (whose state has three nuclear power facilities), California Sen. Diana Feinstein (four nuclear power facilities) as well as a senator without that kind of tie—Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski. But Murkowski receives heavy campaign funding from energy sources. The Senate group seems to want Yucca opened but is working on other alternatives because of the political realities.

Wyden joined the group when New Mexico’s Jeff Bingaman left the Senate. Under Bingaman, the group drafted a bill providing for a nuclear industry subsidy group called the Clean Energy Deployment Administration (CEDA) within the Department of Energy (DOE). The group was working within the “consent-based” approach recommended

by President Obama’s commission.

Bingaman wanted an application for a permanent waste dump before permitting any waste to be moved to temporary dumps, but that view may now leave with him. Wyden, who joined the Senate group after Bingaman’s departure and replaced him as chair, is amenable to shipping waste to temporary sites without a permanent site applicant in hand.

Rep. Shimkus, who chairs an energy and commerce subcommittee of the House Energy and Environment Committee, told the Hill, a congressional newspaper, “Under my dead body will anything be moved through our chamber without a Yucca component.” His state receives 48.2 percent of its power from nuclear and its waste was supposed to go to an Eastern repository. Federal promises were made in the 1970s that there would be two repositories, East and West, and that the West would not have to accept Eastern waste. Those promises were broken by Congress and President Reagan in 1987. The Obama plan calls for reviving the approach. Secretary Chu’s statement read: “A consent-based siting process could result in more than one storage facility and/or repository, depending on the outcome of discussions with host communities. The Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 (NWPA) envisaged the need for multiple repositories as a matter of equity between regions. ...

As a starting place, this strategy is focused on just one of each facility.”

The Shimkus promise to block any nuclear waste bill that did not designate Yucca as the site for storage got heavy coverage from nuclear industry publications and sites like Power Engineering International magazine.

Commentary

The Washington Post, in an editorial reprinted by the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Bangor Daily News, Charlotte News & Observer (all nuclear power markets), observed on Feb. 3: “Every step, the administration insists, must be ‘consent-based,’ with localities accepting waste facilities in return for their economic benefits and perhaps some additional compensation. Congress tried forcing Nevada to take the country’s waste, the thinking goes; this time, the government should try recruitment rather than compulsion. We are skeptical that many localities would volunteer to host waste facilities, particularly the permanent repository, no matter the economic benefits. But perhaps the administration’s staged approach might be a way to convince communities, with each step building confidence that this material can be stored safely.�

The competing Washington Times in Washington, D.C., editorialized on Jan. 21, “At the core of the repository struggle is the fact that nuclear power is anathema to the trendy but expensive windmill and solar panel lobby that holds sway over the administration’s energy policy. Throwing obstacles into the path of safe disposal is a backhanded means of clouding the future of affordable nuclear energy. If the White House has its way, the repository will be sited in NeverNever Land.�

The Times editorial drew a letter to the editor from Joseph Strolin of Minden, former director of the Nevada Nuclear Projects Office: “If the scientific and fair process for selecting repository sites set up in the original Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 had been allowed to prevail in 1987, the country very likely would have a national nuclear waste repository today, albeit not at Yucca Mountain. The Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future studied the lessons to be learned from the failed Yucca Mountain program and produced a series of sound, workable recommendations that, if implemented, have the best chance of finally solving the country’s nuclear-waste problem.â€? â„Ś

Tahoe torn The Nevada Conservation League has started a petition to repeal SB271, a measure which would remove Nevada from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency if the state does not meet conservation efforts for the lake by 2015.

“SB271 passed with almost no analysis of its impact on the Tahoe Basin,” wrote board of directors Jennifer Taylor in an email. “This bill passed the Legislature in the last 15 minutes of the 2011 session, putting in motion a timetable to strip all environmental protections from one of our nation’s treasures, one of the special places of the world, as Governor Sandoval has called it. The very features that make Lake Tahoe so unique are those that are most threatened by this bill, but these impacts have not been fully analyzed. The bill was an irresponsible developer’s dream, stripping away regulatory authority and taking a hard-line approach on future negotiations.”

The NCL argues that of four conditions Nevada must meet by 2015, only one is attainable, according to TRPA community liaison Jeff Cowell—the water quality restoration plan of the Lake Tahoe Regional Plan (“Lakeside view,” Jan. 3). The regional plan—along with Mobile 2035, which seeks to improve sustainable transportation at the lake—aims to improve existing structures to reduce pollution of the lake’s water. The regional plan went into effect on Feb. 10.

Deflowered Flowers for Valentine’s Day might seem like an appropriate gift for a nature lover, but the flower industry is rife with unethical and unsustainable practices.

Last Valentine’s Day, Mother Jones reported that flower farms in Colombia and Ecuador employed thousands of children in unsavory working conditions. Around 63 percent of flowers sold in the floriculture industry are grown in Ecuador, and 23 percent in Colombia. According to the International Labour Organization, Ecuador had more than 40,000 child workers in 2000. Colombia’s numbers were similar, but the country has enacted new labor laws faster than Ecuador, which is currently under scrutiny for child labor practices.

Toxic pesticide use is also rampant in order to grow perfect flowers that maintain shape and structure while in transit to the United States. Long-term exposure to pesticides and fungicides has caused many workers to become ill.

In the U.S., an organization called VeriFlora created a labeling system for sustainablyand organically-grown cut and potted flowers, similar to the labels of organic food.

Lost City Farm finds a home in Midtown With a few piles of manure atop a muddy ground, the whimsical-sounding Lost City Farm doesn’t look like much now—but by the spring, founders Toni Ortega and Lyndsey Langsdale hope it will be well on its way to becoming a by Ashley bustling food hub in the heart of Midtown.

People are really ready for this.” ashleyh@ newsreview.com But there’s much to be done first, including cultivating the plot of land, just shy of an acre on the corner of Moran and Center streets, which has never been cultivated before.

“This first year will be highly experimental,” Ortega says. “We’re curious to see how much food we can grow in an acre.”

“There’s still a lot of infrastructure to build,” says Langsdale. “We’ll start planting in March in a greenhouse, and planting here in April.”

Lost City Farm has a three-year lease on the property, and plans to grow vegetables and offer a farm stand and ideally, a greenhouse or hoophouse.

“We’d like to stay in production year round,” Langsdale said.

But until recently, it wasn’t legal to farm on this land—Langsdale and Ortega went to the City Council and enacted the urban farming ordinance, A fundraiser for the which now permits farmers to grow vegetables and raise hens on city land. farm will be held on The ordinance was approved in September 2012.

“We thought, ‘Why not Reno?’” says Ortega. “It has a lot of entrepreneurial small businesses here. It was a great place to start something like this.”

The name, evocative of fairytales or mystical lands, was inspired by the first known cultivated land in Nevada, called the Lost City. Ortega and Langsdale hunted for inspiration at the Nevada Historical Society before coming across the story.

The two hope to turn the farm into a neighborhood beautification project, too. They’ve already gotten approval from nearby residents to paint murals on the garage doors facing the farm, and they also hope to have a mural on the far wall, currently part of a motel. Once growing season is underway, Langsdale and Ortega hope to sell vegetables wholesale to restaurants or local businesses, such as the Great Basin Food Co-op. They also have plans for a bicycle food delivery service, seed exchange and a tool-lending library.

At this point, Langsdale and Ortega shoulder much of the work themselves, but give credit to Reno’s strong support system for local farmers.

“Every farmer in this area has probably called us and given advice,” Ortega says. “We’ve had a lot of offers for volunteers.” Others have also helped by donating horse manure and other supplies.

Both say that this farm location could be temporary—“this parcel could be sold” once the lease is up, Ortega says—but think that three years will be enough time to determine the interest and demand for urban farming.

“We just hope we can set an example for what can be done here,” says Ortega. Ω OPINION

in December when that newspaper in White Plains, New York, the Journal News, published the names and addresses of licensed gun owners across New York’s Westchester and Rockland counties? Some in the U.S. erupted at the audacity of the newspaper actually providing public information to the public in a way the public could easily access. Half the respondents fell on the side of public disclosure, championing the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America. The other half came down in favor of gun-owner privacy.

Unfortunately for the newspaper, those were the people with the guns, and before the information was removed from the website, guards had to be hired to protect the journalists from people who championed the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America.

That’s really where this story, this cautionary tale about public figures and public information, started. It also had beginnings in my data reporting class at the University of Nevada, Reno, where I’m studying for a master’s degree. Professor Alan Deutschman told us to do a background check on a public figure using only our computers, checking government and private databases.

He even assisted by buying each of us one of those web “people searches” sold by Intelius (see Doc. 01) that constantly clog our spam filters. We were then to present our findings to the class. The “you can’t talk to sources” is fine for class, but for publication, journalists at least try to communicate with the people we’re talking about.

On the surface, this story will be about Nevada Assemblymember Steven Brooks who stands accused of threatening Nevada Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick, battery on a family member and [making] a false statement to obstruct public officer. But it’s really about the First Amendment. This isn’t just a tool for journalists; public information in this internet age is available for everyone from Fallon to Beijing. It’s to enable this country’s citizens to participate in their democracy. If the information is hidden, it’s because government wants it hidden. But almost all information now is within our reach, even from 451 miles away.

So let me introduce you to Steven John Brooks II: Delighted, I’m sure. I chose him because he happened to be in the news at the time of the assignment. I’ll try to number the pdf documents in a logical manner. And once you see my methodology, you’ll have tools to see what’s online about yourself, your neighbor, or your legislator.

I’m as attracted to crime and guns and swords and madness as the next guy, so I immediately did a quick Google search to find out what had been reported about the alleged crimes and arrests. This story isn’t really about those incidents—nobody with good sense wants to beat up on someone suffering from what appears to be emotional issues—but suffice it to say, several people thought Brooks was acting unhinged, and several calls were made to police. He was arrested the first time on Jan. 19. That generated a declaration of arrest, which I initially saw attached to a story by Jon Ralston on TheDailyBeast.com and hosted on Ralston’s site, RalstonReports.com (see documents 02, 03, 04, 05, 06). These documents had one crucial redaction (that is, words blotted out): Steven Brooks’ address. I later found cleaner versions that showed

his address as 3305 E. Rome Blvd., Apt. 2078, North Las Vegas, NV 89081 (doc. 07).

Another thing that piqued my curiosity was on pages 1 and 4 of the cleaner report: The address 6007 Turtle River Ave., was described by police as his wife’s home and then his—never their home together, and it wasn’t the home address listed on the first page.

Yet another was the gun. If Brooks had a concealed carry permit, it would seem odd that the gun was in a shoebox in the trunk—no reason not to have it at hand, particularly if he felt threatened. I Facebooked several acquaintances whom I thought probably had the 2010 police document listing carriers of concealed weapons permits. (I have the one for Washoe County, but I didn’t imagine 61 out of 63 legislators would myopically decide at the 2011 Nevada Legislature that this was another secret the government should keep, so I missed my opportunity to get one for Clark County.) One replied that while there

A few things maybe made a bit more sense—like why he was carrying a friend’s .357 Smith & Wesson revolver instead of his own. He might not even own one. I don’t think I have to explain why people should be able to check gun permits when a neighbor, co-worker or fellow legislator is exhibiting signs of mental illness and allegedly making threats against acquaintances and police.

“DELIGHTED, I’M SURE” resent. Three different addresses in six months, and none of them the home addresses listed on the police report? Red flag. And would somebody please tell me why the Secretary of State’s office doesn’t require the residential address on the Contribution and Expenditure forms?

Less transparency for us voters. Just ask Assemblymember Andrew Martin who won election even though a district judge said he was ineligible because he didn’t live in the district (see doc. 24, another from Jon Ralston’s site). Or maybe Assemblymember Ira Hansen will have something to say about all that.

M O V I N ’ T O T H E C O U N T Y Let’s explore the county information environment. Think of an investigation as going from the general to the specific: global, state, county, community, individual. There are four offices in Clark County that could provide crucial financial information about friends, enemies and politicians: Assessor, Recorder, courts and Registrar of Voters. I didn’t find anything interesting in courts.

The Assessor’s Office is particularly good for property records. You can check property records by owner’s name here: www.clarkcountynv.gov/depts/assessor/pages/recordsearch.aspx, so plug in Steven Brooks and select “Show present and prior owners of the parcel.” I know Brooks’ wife’s name is Ada from the arrest report, so I clicked on the second listing and we get the history of 6007 Turtle River Ave. (see doc. 24). It’s the only property Steven Brooks appears to own, and he got his half from his wife who bought it from Eduardo and Jessica I. Miramontes on Jan. 6, 2005 (see doc. 25) when she was Ada Yllas. They got married on March 2, 2006 (doc. 26), Ada Brooks did a quitclaim deed on Aug. 30, 2006 (doc. 27), and the home became jointly owned on Sept. 13, 2006 (page 5, doc. 27). There’s even a description (doc. 28). You’ll have to look at the document yourself. We wouldn’t want to be nosy or anything. While you’re at it, you’ll want to check out some of the other addresses that raised your interest.

Why’d Ada Lidia Yllas become Ada Brooks and give half her house to Steven? Well, to find that out, you’ve got to go to the Recorder’s site at https://recorder.co.clark .nv.us/RecorderEcommerce. There you can get a record of the marriage certificate; see if there are any foreclosures filed; search for ownership documents or check for liens.

the Brookses by Republic Services filed under “foreclosures” for some reason (see doc. 29). Under “property” is the deed to the home on Turtle River, and finally under “liens,” there’s that same lien from Republic Services, the garbage service.

The Clark County Registrar of Voters can be found at www.clarkcountynv.gov/depts/election/pages/def ault.aspx, but what I really wanted wasn’t available “self-serve” on the website. To satisfy this question of where the heck Steven and/or Ada lived, I had to send an email to Harvard “Larry” Lomax, the Clark County Registrar. He kindly and quickly responded with Steven Brooks’ voter registration applications: Pumpkin Patch Avenue in 2000; Turtle River Avenue in 2005, Ponticello Drive in 2008, back to Turtle River Avenue in 2009, and 109 Delighted Avenue on Jan. 13, 2012 and again on Jan. 24, 2012 (see doc. 30). Lomax was also kind enough to send me Brooks’ voting history (see doc. 31) and his declaration of candidacy for Assembly District 17 (see doc. 32).

In a word, all those address changes seemed “weird.” Again, red flags. None of those address changes listed Rome Boulevard, the street listed as his address on the arrest document. I remembered he’d been elected to the District 19 Assembly seat in 2010, so on a hunch, I called up congress.org, plugged in the Turtle River zip code, typed in the rest of the

33) on Oct. 21, 2012, the same day Steven did, at the same early voting polling place. The only way this could have happened would be if she was registered somewhere other than Turtle River.

Another quick email to Clark County Registrar of Voters Larry Lomax. Ada had changed her address to 109 Delighted Ave. on Jan. 21, 2012 (see doc. 34). I emailed the Registrar asking if there were any other people registered to vote at 109 Delighted Ave. Just one: Gregory Anthony Stallworth. He registered to vote in April 2012, the day after he turned 18 (see doc. 35). And the only thing I knew about him was his name had appeared as having been paid from Steven Brooks’ election fund in 2010 and 2012 on the Secretary of State’s site for a total of $1,260 (see doc. 36).

A web search suggested he’s Ada’s grown son. He was probably being paid to put up campaign signs or some such. I attempted to reach him through what appeared to be his Facebook page, but never heard back.

Back to the Assessor’s and Recorder’s offices for info on 109 Delighted Ave., including foreclosure documents (see docs. 38, 39, 40, 41, 42). I can’t help but wonder how that foreclosure fits in all this.

SOMEONE HAD MALADROITLY ATTEMPTED TO SCRUB BROOKS’ INTERNET PRESENCE. address information, and that’s when it all began to make sense: the Turtle River home was in Assembly District 19; the Delighted Avenue house was in District 17. Brooks had changed his voting address and maybe even moved because he had to in order to run for the District 17 Assembly seat, even though he was the incumbent in District 19. I haven’t figured out his motivation for running in a different district, but with redistricting, who knows? An experienced Republican, Cresent Hardy, won District 19.

Maybe as a Democrat, Brooks just thought 17 would be an easier win.

And that move meant that his own wife would not be able to vote for him unless she moved, too. And as I saw when I downloaded the cumulative voting records for Clark County

What’s all this prove? Nothing.

It’s circumstantial evidence that raises questions about who was actually living at 109 Delighted Ave. and who was living at 6007 Turtle River Ave. In the initial police report, cops separately called the Turtle River house both Steven and Ada’s house.

But Steven couldn’t have been living there, because then he would have been living and voting outside his district, which is illegal. Ada shouldn’t have been living there unless she moved back after the election— which makes sense in light of current events.

In fact, the residency words are clearly stated on all voter registration applications: “I swear or affirm … the present address listed herein is my sole legal place of residence, and I claim

no other place as my legal residence.”

The applicable law is NRS 293.800 (see doc. 43), a felony. Steven Brooks had to have an even more specific oath notarized; that applicable law is 293.1755 (see doc. 44), oddly, a gross misdemeanor.

Ada Brooks was hesitant when I called her cell phone to answer the question as to whether she or her husband lived on Turtle River Avenue.

“It’s just me,” she said after a pause, probably surprised by a reporter calling after 6 p.m. “Why—why do you need to know where I live? He’s got a place in the district. He’s got a place in the district. That’s all you need to know.”

She refused to answer whether she had ever lived at 109 Delighted Ave.: “I’m not going to make no comment,” she said. “We’ve got a place in the district, everything is OK. He’s in the district. We’ve always been in the district. I’ve always had this house.

Always. This house we’ve had for a long time, but we’ve always been in the district.”

And then she hung up.

Go ahead, compose a few search strings, or just check the Las Vegas Review-Journal site—Steve Sebelius and Mike Blasky have been following this pretty closely. point had maladroitly attempted to go back and scrub Brooks’ internet presence after the whole arrest and commitment fiasco.

His Facebook account is gone, but his Twitter account still exists, https://twitter.com/brooks4assembly as does his blog, http://stevenbrookslv.blogspot.com.

His Google Plus account is still up (with lots of vacation photos).

Someone even attempted to remove his campaign’s website, www.brooks4assembly.com. However, through the internet archive, the Wayback Machine, http://archive.org/web/web.php, it’s easy enough to look at: http://tinyurl.com/bfzetqq. His YouTube account was also still live: www.youtube.com/brooks4assembly.

Brooks’ legislative bio says he works for the City of Las Vegas as a liaison, so I did a quick check of Transparent Nevada, http://tinyurl .com/batr6f9, and found he earned $44,413 base pay and benefits in 2011 as a Management Analyst I. Since so many of his affiliations are with nonprofits—Las Vegas Urban League; Hispanic Museum of Nevada; Community Land Trust; Southern Nevada Enterprise Community Board; Community Partners for Better Health—to wrap things up, I checked www.Guidestar.com to see if there was anything unusual. Guidestar monitors nonprofit organizations.

Several nonprofits he mentioned had few or missing IRS financial reports (990s), but I didn’t see any paid gigs for him. But as his seem-

As I said before, journalists try to communicate with people we communicate about, so I’ve sent written messages or left voicemails for all the people mentioned in this story. As I write this, I hope Assemblymember Brooks will call, but I won’t be surprised if he doesn’t. He’s got to be about sick of media, sick of the distractions while he tries to perform the duties he was elected twice to do.

(While he still could do his duty, before the Select Committee on the Assembly kicked him out of the building.) But he doesn’t seem the type who will make the assumption that the story will stop just because he doesn’t call.

I wanted to get to the bottom of that house on Delighted Avenue, so after seeing the house was for sale on Zillow.com, http://tinyurl .com/arg5t22, I texted a friend, Matt O’Brien, in Las Vegas to ask him to snap a picture. He also volunteered to talk to neighbors. (People can be more accurate than documents, but not always.) On the same day Brooks was

being arrested for battery on a family member and [making] a false statement to obstruct public office, O’Brien found one chatty neighbor who was willing to volunteer that Steven Brooks, wife, son and mother-in-law did indeed live in a gated community in a stucco house with Spanish-style roof for around a year, only moving about a month ago—after issues developed with another neighbor of nasty reputation.

So where does this leave us? Has democracy been enabled or disabled by having as much factual information as possible about a legislator who has been a severe distraction to the 77th session of the Nevada Legislature? It seems to me, the most important information to people like Nevada Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick—like Brooks’ access to guns—has been made secret by government. But now, I don’t expect to get a call from Brooks; he’s got bigger problems than some nosy journalist 451 miles away from his district (see docs 51, 52 or LVRJ crime reporter Mike Blasky’s tweets, https://twitter .com/blasky). He hopped on his bike and rode to the nearest flower shop, where he was outfitted with a vase filled with a dozen red roses, some sparkling pink regalia and a balloon reading, “Be Mine.” Then, he rode his bike home. If he is utterly befuddled, they ask a few leading questions to try to pin down the “type” of woman. “You tend to try more romantic stuff,” they say. “You want it to show how much he loves and respects his wife.” In order to do this properly, he

must show that he “knows” what his wife will like. Roses still remain number one, but some women require an upgrade to stargazer lilies, while the “soft and cuddlies” often like a stuffed animal to boot. As for special offers, the garden style bouquet—different varieties of flowers, and instead of the usual triangle shape, the flowers are gathered in one spot, as opposed to spread all the way through, full of natural greens— is very popular. Men looking for “big and showy” can get it for $65$85. Or they can also “knock her socks off” for $85-150 and have it delivered at work.

However, if you want to send your love in Paris some flowers, you’d best order early. On Feb. 14, they will only be taking care of local customers who blew it; those outside the USA are on their own.

All these floral shops emphasized the need to order early. There seems to be a misunderstanding out there that the day you order the flowers is the day they’re wrapped up and made ready for delivery, to waste away in a cooler, wilting as the days pass. Not true, said all my respondents. You are not ordering a Big Mac! In fact, when you order early, this allows the florists time to purchase the best and freshest of whatever is ordered. Ordering late means there might not be any more calla lilies in the store. Also, the floral creations are put together the day before or day of, and then there are all the deliveries to be made. It’s rare, all shops said, to find someone with the time even to take your order. So if you waited until Valentine’s Day, it’s probably too late. Of course, you don’t need a holiday to buy flowers. Music and the internet have thus far had an interesting and exciting, though deeply troubled, marriage. Songwriters are able to post their new compositions up to their websites immediately after completing them. You can write a song, record it on your computer, and send it out for the world to hear in an afternoon and still have time to watch a couple of movies before bed.

One gets the sense that this is the favored working methodology of the Reno duo Surf Curse, the young, local band that best represents the newest waves in independent rock music. Jacob Rubeck and Nicholas Rattigan, multi-instrumentalists and singers both, write catchy little pop tunes, with bittersweet harmonic progressions and twisting, serpentine vocal melodies.

ROCK Demos, available streaming on their Bandcamp page (surfcurse.bandcamp.com) or for download there at the nominal price of $.51, is a 10-song batch of home recordings. The songs have a raw, rough and ragged feel, like they really were written, recorded and released all within the span of a couple of hours. But that’s part of the songs’ charm. This sense of immediacy gives the songs emotional immediacy as well. And the emotions here are multilayered—not the simple anger of a lot of rock music nor basic emo sadness or pop punk’s happy idiocy—but the complex real emotions of real life.

“High School Blues,” in addition to having a nearly perfect song title for a song about being young and having weird emotions, is one of the best of the batch. “Ponyboy” is another good one, with a vocal hook, “You promised me that everything’s gonna be all right,” that earworms without being annoying about it. The title’s a reference to The Outsiders—and movie references, especially to’80s flicks, abound here. The production leaves a lot to be desired, as does the quality of the audio files, and the band name is a little too on-the-nose—reverb, the defining feature of surf rock guitar—being a prominent component of their sound.

These kids write good songs. They can write sensitive tunes about their complicated emotions without being wusses about it. It’ll be great to see how they develop— maybe someday they’ll even save up enough songs, go to a studio, get some decent recordings, and press it to vinyl they way their grandparents used to do.

An album meant to accompany The Wild Horse Conspiracy, a book about protecting wildlife, seems like a risky proposition—especially one with terrible song titles like “Mane as White as Snow,” “Afternoon Snooze and Frolic,” and “Foals at Play.” But instead, it’s a mostly tasteful collection of solo piano instrumentals composed

by Joanne Grauer. The music is simple and sentimental. And the music is often oddly evocative of the galloping rhythms of wild horses.

A lot of it seems a little rudimentary, like children’s music or Christmas carols, but it’s not really intended for close listening. It’s music meant to be put on in the background while one reads about conspiracies of environmental law—which is a unique enough aim for a piece of music to call it a success.

So witnessing the likes of the local acrobatic dance troupe Siren Society twirl, bend and basically contort their bodies into human pretzels—all while suspended in the air—makes you question if they may have had a few extra bones removed.

The Siren Society enlists a variety of talent. But since its rebirth a couple of months back—the troupe was formerly known as Midnight Minx—Herrada had to acquire some fresh faces, with only four original members hanging around (pun intended) for the new line-up.

“A few of the girls decided they didn’t want to do it anymore,” says Herrada on the reasoning behind the name change.

But luckily, Herrada, who moonlights, or more accurately, daylights, as an aerialist instructor at High Sierra Gymnastics on Woodland Ave., was able to find more qualifiers. “A lot of the [current] girls are my students from the gym,” she says. It’s an opportunity that allows Herrada and her students to take their work and hobby out of the gymnasium floodlights and into the limelight.

It’s a task that can be tricky not only for rehearsal purposes, but also for lack of appropriate venue “I go scope out the location before a show,” Herrada says. Explaining that the venue needs to have high, exposed ceiling beams allowing for them to attach their equipment—the lyra (a large hoop), the silks and the occasional hammock. And of course, they must be sturdy, an aspect Herrada says they test for by playing on beforehand.

Safety is an aspect the troupe has to consider not just in the equipment sense. “I make sure we won’t be in a packed room with no security,” she says. “Often, we’re performing where people are drinking, and they tend to get to the point where they think it’s fun to push you on the lyra.”

But as the saying goes, if you build it, they will come. Cargo had beams installed specifically for them, according to Herrada. And the last major performance the troupe did—“Summer Solstice,” in which they choreographed an acrobatic dance show to coincide with the passing of the seasons—came close to selling out.

“People are always just like, ‘Oh my god, how did you do that?’” Herrada says of the general crowd reaction.

The answer? Not to remove a few ribs—just plain ol’ dedication. “I’ve been doing aerial arts two and a half years,” says Herrada, who practices daily with the help of the aerial silk she had personally installed in her high ceilinged home.

“Practice. It’s mostly balance and strength … and patience.” Ω

Bullet to the Head

Identity Thief Cashing in on her Oscar nominated turn in Bridesmaids, Melissa McCarthy gets a headlining role alongside Jason Bateman in Identity Thief.

While both performers are talented and make the best of the crap heap of a script they are handed, it’s not enough to make this anything more than a desperate misfire.

McCarthy has a lot of talent. One only need see her in The Nines to know of her dramatic capabilities. Her scope goes well by beyond slapstick comedy. Yet, here she is Bob Grimm being smashed in the face with guitars and bgrimm@ asked to lip synch that stupid milk shake song newsreview.com while sitting in the passenger’s seat for yet another riff on Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

This is the sort of junk Chris Farley would be handed back in the days before his heart exploded. McCarthy is a big woman, and so she is cast in the role of sloppy clown to Bateman’s dapper straight man. Well, McCartney is also a beautiful and talented woman, and deserving of a more classy show-

case. Watching this garbage, I was surprised director Seth Gordon never forced her to put on a few-sizes-too-small windbreaker and have her sing “Fat Girl in a Little Jacket.”

Bateman’s Sandy Patterson gets his identity stolen by McCarthy’s Diana and faces legal and job troubles as a result. So he leaves Colorado for Florida in search of “Bilbo,” or so he calls her, because the cops won’t help him.

When the two meet up, turns out Diana has a mean throat punch and will not go quietly.

The two have a couple of good fights, with Diana getting smashed in the head with a guitar and struck with a waffle iron in one of them. Identity Thief actually does OK in the

physical comic violence category. I chortled a bit at the hits these two were taking. Probably would’ve been a better movie if it were just 90 minutes of Diana and Sandy throwing stuff at each other and getting hit by cars.

Sandy eventually gets her into a car and, in the tradition of road comedies, the journey starts off bad with the two hating each other.

Sandy must endure a night of Diana having sex with a stranger, various roadside disasters, and the aforementioned Diana singing to the radio.

Of course, Sandy and his family will eventually see that Diana, even though she has robbed them blind, is a great lady deep down inside. She actually spends the night at their house holding hands with the kids as they sleep.

I don’t know. I think it would take more than Diana putting mashed potatoes on her face for a couple of laughs at the dinner table to be forgiven for destroying their financial lives.

Sandy’s family consists of everybody’s goto movie wife, Amanda Peet. Peet is asked to perform the film’s most impossible task, that being playing a wife and mother who would even allow Diana in the house.

My mom is a relatively meek lady, but if anybody like Diana tried to come in through the front door when I was a kid, she would’ve faced the wrath of mom and her wooden spoon. God dammit, I hated that stupid wooden spoon.

Gordon, who put together the much better Horrible Bosses, is basically working with one joke, that being Diana is a mess and Sandy will be tortured dealing with her. Gordon tries to redeem Diana by the end of the film, even giving her a makeover that results in some cringe-worthy dialogue.

Still, it’s hard to have a lot of fun watching a man’s life getting wrecked by identity theft.

Hell, somebody tried to steal my identity and go shopping with my debit card just a couple of months ago. I wasn’t laughing then, and I wasn’t laughing all that much at Identity Thief.

Hollywood … please … don’t squander McCarthy’s talent. Give her the dramatic, respectable roles she deserves. Ω

Like Arnold Schwarzenegger before him in The Last Stand, Sylvester Stallone gives it his all in service to a script that fails to distinguish itself. The results? Nobody seems to care about either star vehicle. Walter Hill (48 Hrs.) directs in a very Walter Hill way, meaning his action/buddy films tend to feel the same.

Unfortunately, this one has more in common with his Another 48 Hrs., in which the formula had already gotten tired. Stallone plays a tattooed thug named James Bonomo, and his buddy is South Korean Taylor Kwon (Sung Kang), which leads to more than a few uncomfortable racist jokes. The plot involves the usual crap: a double cross, a partner getting killed, somebody getting kidnapped and ax fights. You must give credit to Stallone; he looks great and he delivers his stupid lines with much aplomb.

Kang is just there for the ride, offering little in a role once meant for Thomas Jane. I will say that this film features the best Christian Slater scene is a long while. But one great Slater scene does not a good movie make.

Django Unchained

Man, it bugs me that Quentin Tarantino’s latest is only passably entertaining. I have loved his past films. This is the first one I’m not in love with. Jamie Foxx plays Django, a slave purchased by a bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) two years before the Civil War. Django is purchased because he has seen some targets the bounty hunter is pursuing. Django is promised his freedom after they find those targets.

When those targets are gotten, they pursue Django’s wife (Kerry Washington) on a plantation owned by the repellent Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). This one follows some of the same blueprints as Tarantino’s own Inglourious Basterds. It feels as if he is repeating himself a bit. There are some great performances, especially from Waltz and DiCaprio.

It just doesn’t have the heft of past Tarantino efforts. Perhaps this has something to do with this being the first Tarantino movie edited by someone other than the late Sally Menke.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

This seriously had the makings of the worst, dumbest movie ever made. Hansel and Gretel, the famed gingerbread house eaters, survive their ordeal to become worldclass witch hunters. The result is bad, but it’s one of those so-bad-it’s-almost-good endeavors. Jeremy Renner somehow got talked into this thing, and he gives it his best shot, as does Gemma Arterton as his sister, Gretel. Famke Janssen is on hand as a mean witch who plans to take the blood of a bunch of children and do something or other with it. I wasn’t really following, or caring. The 3-D is bad, so go ahead and opt for 2-D. It’s got Peter “Where is Pancakes House?” Stormare in it too, which is usually the mark of a bad film unless it’s Fargo.

Lots of blood and curse words get this one an R-rating. Director Tommy Wirkola seems as if he’s playing it for camp at times, and that would’ve been the better move for the whole film. It really slows down when it takes itself too seriously.

Mama

This genuinely chilling haunted fairytale comes from producer Guillermo del Toro and writer/director Andrés Muschietti, and is based on Mushcietti’s original short film. Two little girls are abandoned by their demented father in the forest. They are discovered years later and adopted by their uncle (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend (Jessica Chastain). The little girls have taken on the characteristics of feral beasts and are convinced they are being watched over by a force they call “Mama.” As it turns out, Mama is very real, and a decent CGI creation that is both scary and just the right touch of funny. The film works well not just because Muschietti knows how to construct a good scare, but also because he does a great job getting you to care for the little girls and the Chastain character.

Chastain, looking rather gothic in this one, delivers another good performance, even

though she isn’t very convincing as a bass player in a punk band. I was scared throughout much of this movie.

If you are going to make a movie like Kentucky Fried Movie, why not hire that film’s director, John Landis? He’s a guy who could turn in some solid/stupid comedy, and his slate seems pretty open these days. Instead, a bunch of directors try their hand at slob comedy and get very mixed results. Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts score the most points as a couple homeschooling their son and making sure he gets the complete, humiliating experience. Terrence Howard gets a good turn as a college basketball coach, and that’s about it for the OK stuff. Most of this film is big stars like Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet and Halle Berry embarrassing themselves. Hell, Jackman even does a good chunk of the film with a scrotum neck. Richard Gere takes part in the film’s lamest segment involving an MP3 player that looks like a super model. A lot of dud jokes with some sporadic laughter. It’s not the disaster that a lot of critics are calling it, but it’s not all that good, either.

Side Effects

The first half of director Steven Soderbergh’s alleged feature film’s swan song is excellent, while the second half is only passably good. Jude Law stars as a doctor treating a depressed patient (Rooney Mara) who is given an experimental drug with some nasty results. The film is at once a mystery and an indictment of the worldwide pharmaceutical industry, and it hums along nicely for a good chunk of the running time.

Then, it suddenly becomes a mediocre Brian De Palma movie as the mysteries are solved, and it gets a little hokey. Good things happen before it unravels, with Mara doing some nice work alongside Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Soderbergh says this is it for him. Hopefully, he just takes a couple of years off and finds himself back behind the camera someday. This movie is OK, but I would like to see him go out on a better note.

Stand Up Guys

A bunch of great actors get together and do their best with middling material. Al Pacino plays a criminal released from a long prison haul, and Christopher Walken plays the guy who is supposed to pick him up at the prison gate and take his life soon thereafter. I have a hard time with this premise right off the bat, because the two are best friends, and if you’re a crime boss with any brains and want somebody smoked, you don’t hire the dude’s best friend to do the gig. Don’t you think there’s a chance the dude won’t follow through? Anyways, Pacino and Walken hang out for a night that includes stealing cars, snorting prescription drugs, and hanging out with another old guy (Alan Arkin). The trio makes most of this watchable, but with this cast, you want something more than just watchable. Pacino works hard to get some credibility back after a string of loser movies, and he redeems himself just fine. Walken is good here, playing a man with more depth than his usual parts. Arkin is just doing his shtick. Nothing all that surprising happens.

Zero Dark Thirty

Director Kathryn Bigelow getting snubbed

by Oscar for this taut, scary, intelligent movie about the war on terror and hunt for Bin Laden is a travesty. Well, it’s a travesty when it comes to movies and stuff, not so much in the grand scheme of things. Still, Bigelow deserves praise for putting together a movie that is both exciting political thriller and terrific action movie. Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain is deserving of the accolades as Maya, a composite character of CIA agents who managed to find Bin Laden in Pakistan and end his life. The film contains scenes of torture, but it doesn’t feel “pro-torture” by any means.

It’s a great movie that will only get greater with time, and yet another reason to call Bigelow one of the best in the business.

On the floor Drag Me Under Drag Me Under—a five piece band including Maurice Harold, 34, vocals; Jeromy Ainsworth, 31, guitar; Pat Sutton, by Nora Heston 24, drums; Brandon ‘B-Dick’ Dickson, 21, guitar; and Josh Elwing, 22, bass—may be made up of self-proclaimed “hardcore kids,” but they say they aren’t the typical definition of a hardcore band. “[Our music] doesn’t really fit that genre to a ‘T’ but we have elements that incorporate it,” Dickson says.

“We don’t ever really turn down shows,” Dickson says.

As a result of the their just-sayyes-attitude, the band members say they don’t have to scrap ideas because one person shoots it down.

Instead, they embrace each other’s ideas and just have fun with them.

“As soon as it stops being fun, we stop,” Sutton says. “Drag Me Under has been a band for three years, and it’s never not been fun.”

“I haven’t been this stoked on a band that I’ve been in, I don’t think, ever in my life,” Harold agreed.

In the spirit of keeping it fun, the band members say they’ve opted to perform on the floor instead of a stage, and some of their favorite shows were played in basement venues.

“We play a lot of larger venues,” Ainsworth says.

“There’s this disconnect from the people that you’re there with [at larger venues]. but when you play basement shows, you’re like a foot away from the people, you make eye contact, you’re bumping into them. … You’re a part of the actual show … and it’s a lot more intimate. …

When you’re on stage looking down at everyone, there’s like this huge disconnect. It’s almost like you’re there working, you’re not there cause it’s … a party.”

“When we have a choice … we just set up on the floor,” Harold says.

Harold, who writes most of the group’s lyrics, pulls his inspiration from a lot of different places, including his personal life, but he likes to keep his lyrics only pseudo-personal.

“No Taylor Swift stuff,” Harold jokes. “I don’t sing about my ex-boyfriends.”

So what else can you hear the group sing about? Werewolves, seamonsters, UFOs and bank robbers, of course.

With black metal lyrics, a lot of the band’s songs have double meanings. For example, “Cold Winters and Titty Glitter,” is seemingly about werewolves, but it’s also about night owl, party animals, according to the group.

Another example? “Devour,” which is fittingly about zombies, but also potentially about eating a lot of cake. Why? “Humans are just cake to zombies.” Ω

So what exactly is a hardcore kid? “Being a hardcore kid isn’t just liking hardcore music, being a hardcore kid is DIY shows, DIY recording, sitting … in your friend’s barbershop and making CDs, just doing everything yourself, independent ideals—kind of punk rock mentality, but keeping yourself clean,” Sutton says.

Despite their love of hardcore music, the members of Drag Me Under describe their sound as a mix between heavy metal and rock ’n’ roll, and a hardcore band with black metal lyrics.

The best description of their sound?

“Pantera,” Sutton laughs.

The band’s current lineup has been around for two years, and a year of personnel changes happened before that.

The members say they came together because they were all looking for the same thing in a band—to have fun. After negative experiences in previous bands, they decided to get together and form Drag Me Under as an attempt to finally have a group without naysayers. As a result, Drag Me Under is made up instead of self-described “yes men.”

The purpose of the project is to encourage the creation of new artwork in a range of media. W-Su through 3/3; Linda Besemer: Sine Language, The abstract painter creates double-sided paintings (“folds”) of pure acrylic pigment without a ground. Rather than framing her paintings, Besemer drapes these pliable works over rods attached to the wall.

More recently, she began creating sculptural “slabs,” in which layer after layer of vibrant acrylic color is built up to a thickness of up to five inches, then the mass is sculpted, revealing colors, shapes and patterns. Biocompatible dentistry means that whatever we do—treatment, materials, products— are in harmony with the body, you know, the health and well being. For instance, something that would not be compatible would be putting mercury fillings in, which would be poisonous. So whatever we do is designed to be in harmony with the body.

Give me an example of a practical application of this.

Suppose you’ve got somebody who’s undergoing cardiac surgery. You work, I assume, with the surgeon?

Yes. As a matter of fact, just recently I got a patient. He had a torn mitral valve in his heart and so his surgeon said, “You know, I can’t operate on you because of the infection—you know, your teeth and your oral infections. So you need to get that cleaned up.” And I also had an orthopedic surgeon request the same thing for somebody having a hip implant and

they wouldn’t do the surgery until this person was completely, or as much as possible, disease-free orally because if you have high levels of bacteria, high levels of viruses, high levels of candida fungal forms, it all dumps into the bloodstream and creates heart problems, diabetes, pancreatic cancer, you name it. And it all starts orally. So that’s why, whatever we do, we want it to be compatible with the individual. And so we do a lot of things— we remove the toxic silver mercury, we try to get heavy metal detoxification, we test for compatibility of dental materials, we can test for do blood tests for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, oral cancer. And then we use … soft tissue lasers to help detoxify the bacterial in the periodontal pockets. We can do saliva tests that will tell us about the oral DNA and genetic predisposition for inflammation and infection. We have a pretty comprehensive—very comprehensive—non-surgical periodontal disease program.

Then again, perhaps it's understandable that the man who could envision light being both a particle and a wave could also embrace the merits of living alone while preparing for marriage numero dos.

I would say every dentist is qualified if they have the interest in doing that. That’s going to be the shift in dentistry, is towards being concerned about total health. If a dentist was interested in total body health—I’m talking about 10 years ago—he probably would have gone into medicine. I think most of us are more mechanically oriented to do fillings and crowns and that kind of stuff rather than being concerned [with total health]. There’s a shift [toard] becoming more and more aware of that. If somebody goes to a physician and he’s got high levels of infection and the physician says, “Listen, what does your dentist say about that?” And the guy says, “My dentist never said anything about that”—well, hello? … So I think it’s up to us; we’re in the best position because we see patients on a regular basis, like at least every six months.

We’re more apt to play a role in, well, actually saving people’s lives. I routinely do for people who have periodontal disease and they’re undergoing treatment, we test for c-reactive protein, which tells us how much inflammation is present in the body, and it’s inflammation that kills people. [We do] blood sugar tests for diabetes. Those are straight-forward markers. I mean, they’re basic because they’re two diseases that cost a tremendous amount of money. For instance, I think it’s Cigna and Aetna spend $525 billion a year on heart disease and diabetes. And that’s a few years ago. It could even be more.[now]. Ω

That said, what's up exactly with ESPN's daily handwringing on behalf of the newly discovered suckitude of the L.A. Lakers? Jeez, every day, there's some new breathless update about the unholy wretchedness being suffered this season by the dear darling Lakers.

Get over it, Espy. Let the Lakers suck already. It couldn't happen to a nicer hellhole. Amen.

One of the reasons I'm quite taken with the film is that after sexual surrogate Helen works with quadraplegic John, she actually lays in bed without resorting to the most phony move in movies, that of the actress who, just after having sex, pulls the sheets up over her breasts. In this performance, Ms. Hunt lays in the post-coital bed with her breasts fully exposed. You know, like a real woman! I was stunned, even amazed, by this daring and trail-blazing portrayal. Ω

FAMILY MATTERS WELCOME TO THE 2013 WINTER FAMILY GUIDE

W

HEN I WAS A KID, I’D ALWAYS FEEL A MAJOR SLUMP AFTER CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR’S WERE OVER. Even though winter is by far my favorite season, the hype of the holiday season and the relentless gray skies results in a sort of post-holiday depression. I’ve found the remedy is keeping busy—physically and mentally.

There’s that saying, “Boredom is the mother of invention.” We don’t expect your little ones to turn into Leonardo da Vinci overnight, but we might be able to help you find a cure for the mid-winter blues. In December, we highlighted plenty of outdoor sports and activities to stretch your legs and burn off some of those Christmas desserts, but sometimes the weather is just too crappy to be outside. So we have a roundup of family-friendly films coming out in the next few months, and the lowdown on fun places in Reno and Sparks to take the kids and teens. And we’ve also found some fascinating and, yes, educational science projects that even adults will want to try out in their spare time. (Trust me—non-Newtonian fluids are endlessly entertaining.)

But it’s not just kids who feel that seasonal depression, and we talked to some local parents who understand the challenges that come with family life. Tammy Soong, author of the World’s Worst Moms blog, provides a forum for honest parenting. The Maternal Integrity Project helps new mothers handle the stresses of their new role. And teacher and RN&R writer Sharon Black shares some tips on how families can help kids succeed inside and outside of the classroom.

So don’t feel too bummed out. Spring is right around the corner.

From Up on Poppy Hill is a not-yet-rated Japanese animated film that explores high school life and the discovering of one’s heritage by telling the story of Umi and Shun, a young couple whose romance has just begun. Set in 1963 Yokohama, the world is changing during another important time in these two young lovers lives: high school. The film explores the relationship of Umi and Shun, staying rooted in the struggles of the times, a country rebuilding itself after World War II while also preparing to host the upcoming Olympics. The film also offers a twist when a past secret emerges that could destroy Umi and Shun’s relationship, an interesting parallel to the historic events of the time period.

THE COLD WEATHER IS ENOUGH TO GIVE ANYONE CABIN FEVER. Perhaps one of the most anticipated animated films of the year is The Croods, set to be released March 22.

It is a 3D animated film that centers on a family of cavemen and cavewomen. Grug (Nicholas Cage) is threatened when he and his family are forced to leave behind their home and encounter a nomad, Guy (Ryan Reynolds), who introduces the family to some of his inventions, including fire. To further complicate matters, Grug’s oldest daughter, Eep (Emma Stone), is smitten by the newcomer. Grug and Guy struggle to see eye-to-eye as Grug embraces the world he knows and Guy looks to the future.

HILE THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS A POPULAR TIME TO GO TO THE MOVIES, there are still a couple months of winter left after Christmas and the cold weather is enough to give anyone cabin fever. We’ve wrangled up a list of family-friendly finds that will get your brood out of the house without being forced to brave the brisk temperatures.

Escape From Planet Earth is a 3D comedy made for families. Rated PG, this film, which opens Feb. 14, tells the tale of a risk-seeking astronaut and his nerdy, rule-following brother. In a twist, the do-well brother, Gary, is forced to take over as the hero after his astronaut brother is caught in a trap on a dangerous planet.

With Brendan Fraser, William Shatner, Jessica Alba and Sarah Jessica Parker lending their voices to the star-filled cast, the film is meant to captivate children and their parents.

Based on the famous fairytale Jack and the Beanstalk, Jack the Giant Slayer, starring Nicholas Hoult, is scheduled to open March 1. The film, which is not yet rated, is about a young farmhand (Hoult) who accidentally reignites a war between his people and the giants when he opens a gateway between the two worlds. Complete with a princess, a kingdom and an unsuspected warrior, this film has all the ingredients of a classic fairytale. The modern twist? A plethora of special effects and a 3D version of the film, to be released the same day as the 2D version.

Another remake of a classic, Oz the Great and Powerful, starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams, stays true to the themes of the original—the betterment of oneself and the battle between good and evil—but tells the story of a time before Dorothy. When Oscar Diggs travels from Kansas to the Land of Oz, he meets three witches who force him to prove himself as an excellent wizard.

ENO AND SPARKS SIT JUST AT THE EDGE OF THE SIERRA NEVADA with the Truckee River running right smack through the middle of downtown Reno. In other words, this region is surrounded by boundless outdoor recreation opportunities for the family. But sometimes, we get rain or snow, or worst of all, that cold, dreary, hazy pain in the butt of an inversion layer that we just went through. After a few days of that cold dreariness you need to get your little rascals out of your house before a) they destroy it and b) you begin removing large clumps of that rapidly graying hair from your scalp. To retain your sanity, you need to find a fun place indoors to take your kids. And no, 8year-olds don’t consider sampling the coffee at Trader Joe’s or wandering around Whole Foods wondering why every one is so thin as fun indoor activities. They want kid fun. So in the interest of your mental health we are providing a list of some options. The Discovery is packed full of great hands-on exhibits and fun things to do for kids including the Cloud Chamber, which is basically a three-story jungle gym where they learn about the water cycle, or Truckee Connections—an 80-foot working model of our favorite river. At the Build It! exhibit kids can get involved with the building process from drafting plans to choosing building materials, with a healthy dose of information on green energy generation. At Da Vinci’s Corner, they get to explore some of the things that one of the world’s greatest inventors was interested in and at the Spark! Lab Smithsonian kids and adults get involved with fun activities geared towards sparking interest in their creative minds and invention. The museum also provides a steady supply of classes and programs that might strike your

REPORT CARD A TEACHER GIVES SOME ADVICE ABOUT HELPING CHILDREN SUCCEED IN SCHOOL—AND LIFE BY

I came to teaching late in life. A few years ago you would have found me at a desk in a posh office, translating German legal documents into English to enable rich men to become richer. The pay was great, the Christmas parties marvelous. My conscience, however, was troubled.

This was not the “difference” I wished to make. And so, after much thought, I went into teaching.

I think we can all agree on one thing: public education is far from perfect. We know from research that the best way to learn is not, in fact, in a room stuffed with 37 students with a teacher whose job it is to keep all minds focused on the same task. Minds wander, and curiosity should, ideally, be allowed to go where it will. But the ideal is not always practicable on the street. Thus we have the system we have and we need to work within that system.

There are also, without doubt, some bad teachers out there. But there are many good ones who do the best they can. It is also good to remember that teachers alone are not responsible for a child’s education. Parents should play at least an equal if not more significant role in the shaping of their child’s mind and habits. And so, as 2013 begins, here are—according to my informal survey of teachers all over Washoe County—a few things we parents can do to help children succeed in school. Think of them, perhaps, as belated New Year’s resolutions.

Establish a connection with your child’s teacher.

Check grades, e-mail or call your child’s teacher and introduce yourself. You have no idea how happy this makes us.

Don’t assume the worst of the teacher. We work very

hard for your child. Think of us as teammates, not rivals.

Or, as my colleague’s father used to tell him: “Son, whenever there is a disagreement between you and your teacher, you are wrong, every time.” While this may not be the case “every time,” it provides a basis of mutual respect between adults. This basis is far easier to work from when problems arise than a basis of distrust.

When education is important in the home, it becomes important to the child. Demonstrate learning

for your children. Read at home—read to your child and in front of your child. Ask questions. Research answers to things that you don’t know. Show them how to solve problems by striving to solve your own problems yourself, and then allow your child to solve her own problems by herself. Children rarely listen to what we say, but they always watch what we do.

Teach your children to become self-advocates. Fighting

Do not give your child a cell phone. If you feel you must get him a cell phone, get him one without a texting plan. This will relieve him of the pressure to update his friends during class. It will also require him to have face-to-face conversations with other human beings. And, OMG, it might also just weed some text lingo out of his formal writing, u no?

Talk to your child from the beginning. Show your 2-yearold how an egg looks cooked and uncooked; discuss with your fifteen-year-old the war in Syria. This not only demonstrates for them thought processes but also builds cultural literacy and vocabulary. They need to learn more than the formal knowledge of the classroom.

Compliment your childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s effort more than her talent.

Research shows that children who are praised for their hard work tend to work harder, no matter the result, while children praised for their smarts tend to work less or not at all for fear of not meeting othersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; expectations. The child praised for her hard work also demonstrates more delight in the task. Our society could use a lot more people who know simply how to put their noses to the grindstone until the epiphany comes, and enjoy the effort.

Require that your child be on time to school and everywhere else he or she goes, and be on time yourself as a good example.

Eat dinner together without the television or other distractions. If your schedule is too packed with sports or

other events then cut something outâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;but donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cut out dinner.

The research is staggering regarding the benefits of the family meal: children in families who eat together are less likely to become overweight or get into drugs. They also tend to do better in school. And, if thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not enough, psychologists have shown that it is at the family table where parents are more likely to hear of a serious problem before itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s too late.

Talk to your child about birth control and educate them on sex. In this day and age, accidents shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t happen,

regardless of religious beliefs. We have a hard enough job teaching young people without children.

Show up to school functions, even if your child says he

doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care. Trust us, he does.

THE MATERNAL INTEGRITY PROJECT AIDS EXPECTANT AND NEW MOTHERS Mary Gilbert, 24, wants you to understand that child birth is completely normal. She should know—she just gave birth to a new brain-child, the Reno-based Maternal Integrity Project, a forum for women and growing midwifery.

Can you tell me about the roots of the Maternal Integrity Project?

This project in general was a creation that I came up with as a means to give women all of the resources they needed to be informed during their pregnancy and all throughout parenthood. I have found in my studies that many women find themselves [so] bombarded with information that it makes it extremely difficult to get any feel of what is real and what isn’t. As an apprentice midwife, I am constantly getting text messages and phone calls from friends and acquaintances asking for advice on their pregnancy, birth control, and everything in between. It became upsetting to me that so many women were getting their sources from books like, What to Expect When You’re Expecting, which doesn’t give all of the options out there—it mainly focuses on hospital birth and complications during pregnancy. Women deserve to be educated about their bodies and the choices they have throughout their pregnancy, and so this website hopefully will become something that they will be able to find out every choice possible!

At what stage is this project?

First trimester! [Laughs] It is still very early on. Hopefully within the next few months, I hope to have a forum up for mothers all around the world to use to be able to talk to one another about their experiences in a safe environment free of judgment. Also, within the next couple of weeks I hope to have a tab that shows all of the services I provide in my community in the greater Reno, Sparks and Tahoe area as a doula for both birth and postpartum, as a placental encapsulation specialist, and soon-to-be childbirth educator.

What is something you wish was more understood in the realm of child-birth? Do you see problems in our society when it comes to pregnancy, birth, postpartum…?

I want everyone to know that childbirth is normal.

Birthing a child and being pregnant is not an illness! If our bodies were not made to give birth, then none of us would still be around. We all come from a long line of pelvises that have worked up until now, so I can guarantee you that there is an extremely minuscule chance that yours is going to be the one that fails.

Your website seems to focus on the power of sharing experiences. Blog posts that center on birth stories, postpartum confessions that bleed into more controversial topics such as an introduction to vaccinations. You even have a tag for abortion. Can you expand more on why you think an open-minded strategy helps women?

Because every woman deserves to have a choice, regardless of what that choice is. It is not up to me to judge a woman for having a different opinion than mine. If she has educated herself, and knows the risks and benefits of what she is doing, than who am I to tell her otherwise? I can only give her the real information, and that is information based on evidence and fact.

You state that the project is open to diverse approaches to birthing, yet you favor natural birth and midwifery over a hospital birth.

I think the biggest problem in our culture is that we place such a high regard to the medical model for everything. We live in a lazy culture where we treat health problems as they come instead of trying to do something to fix them before they happen. We live in a culture full of fast food, microwave dinners, television, cell phones, and cars and none of us are trying to do anything to better it. I’m not taking away from the fact that many of those things have become beneficial to us now, but the fact of the matter is that the last time the majority of any of us have gone outside our house for a walk, or the last time the majority of us have taken the time to really take a serious look at the foods we are putting into our bodies. ... We are not taking care of ourselves in a way that can prevent us from getting sick or that keep us healthy. I think that is why we rely on modern medicine so much now, because we feel that it is the only way to keep us healthy, when it actually begins with us.

Another thing about birth is that women believe they have no other options than hospitals and what their doctors tell them to do. The importance we place on doctors—a highly male profession, ironic considering we are talking about a realm that is heavily female—is insane. Women have trusted their bodies for years now, and all of a sudden we have started to believe that we are so fragile and that we have to be so submissive that we must believe what someone else is telling us to do with our bodies when we should be trusting it in the first place as something that will tell us to do when the time comes.

organic parenthood emerging and if so, how will it evolve? I know some consider it to be a bit of a trend.

I do favor one over the other, and I am sure that it shows on my website, which is fine by me. This is why—there have been studies to prove that there is a link between surgical births and postpartum depression. I believe strongly that women who birth in hospitals have a bigger chance of finding themselves feeling robbed of an experience that should have been amazing. I find that women who birth in hospitals find themselves with lower self-esteem, and feeling as though they could have done many things differently.

They feel betrayed by the doctor, their partners, their families and their bodies. I would be all for hospitals if I knew that every woman who came out of there felt as though they were happy with the experience, but that is not the case. I have yet to meet a woman who has been with a midwife who felt as though they missed out on anything whatsoever. This is not to say that I do not believe in birthing in a hospital. I believe women who are high-risk should be delivering in a hospital under the care of a doctor. I believe hospitals are necessary, and I believe that modern medicine is wonderful, and extremely beneficial.

Indulge me in your own personal dream for this project. What would the next five years look like?

Hectic! Hopefully in the next five years I will be starting up my own midwifery practice, and The Maternal Integrity Project will have blossomed into something that every woman uses as a resource during their pregnancy. Until then, I will be doing everything in my power to help women from all walks of life feel empowered in their experiences, and feel as though they are going through womanhood knowing exactly how powerful and capable they really are.

A widespread phenomenon in the wonderful land of the internet is â&#x20AC;&#x153;mommy blogging,â&#x20AC;? although the movement also includes plenty of â&#x20AC;&#x153;daddy bloggersâ&#x20AC;?, too (â&#x20AC;&#x153;The write stuff,â&#x20AC;? May 10, 2012). Women and men from all over the world are coming together to share their experiences, knowledge, and insecurities regarding parenthood.

Local writer Tammy Soong is the author of the popular blog Worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Worst Moms, www.worldsworstmoms.com, written in the hopes of empowering parents with the knowledge that nobody is perfect. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In 2010, I started Worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Worst Moms as a way to let other moms share their â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;bad mommyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; stories,â&#x20AC;?

But I also blog about everything else that affects me: my cousin dying tragically, the presidential race, the Super Bowl. It just so happens that my kids are usually front and center in those narratives because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re front and center in my life.â&#x20AC;?

Soong encourages discussion and a sense of community within her blog and appreciates the voice the â&#x20AC;&#x153;mommy blogâ&#x20AC;? movement has given to women, The popularity of parent blogs gives a voice to the complex and sometimes terrifying experience of being a parent. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love that so many topics of discussion and points of view come out that otherwise wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have been heard,â&#x20AC;? she said.

EXPERIMENTAL PHASE FIVE SCIENCE PROJECTS USING HOUSEHOLD MATERIALS

HE BEST SCIENCE IS DRIVEN BY CURIOSITY, AND KIDS ARE CURIOUS BY NATURE. Instead of trying to keep their little hands out of the pantry or medicine cabinet, we’ve found a few fun and easy projects using common household items. And most likely, older teens and adults will find themselves curious, too.

While most of these projects are kid-friendly, we recommend having an adult around to supervise.

POTATO BATTERY A potato battery is a classic science fair project because it’s incredibly easy and satisfying. A potato contains electrolytes, which can produce enough energy to power a small clock. A lemon, too, can produce electricity.

YOU’LL NEED: Potatoes Copper wire Wire cutters Galvanized nails Three connected alligator clips LED clock

- Stick one nail into each potato.

- Wrap the copper wire around one nail and one penny.

- Place the wrapped penny into the same potato with the wrapped nail. Ensure that the penny and nail do not touch.

- Stick a penny into the second potato.

- Connect the wire from the wrapped penny to the unwrapped nail. Secure with an alligator clip.

- Clip the other two alligator clips to the positive and negative sides of the LED clock. The clock should now be getting power from the potato.

LIQUID SOLID There’s a popular episode of the show Mythbusters, where host Adam Savage appears to “walk on water” by stepping into a pool of cornstarch and water.

When he moves quickly, the corn starch and water briefly solidify under his feet, supporting his weight. When mixed, the two substances form a non-Newtonian fluid, in which the liquid briefly firms into a solid, resisting the penetration of a foreign object. A non-Newtonian fluid is

called such because it defies the Newtonian laws of viscosity.

- Light the edge of the newspaper. While it is burning, drop it quickly into the glass bottle.

YOU’LL NEED:

- Before the paper is completely burnt, place the egg on top of the bottle. The pressure will then suck the egg through the opening.

Corn starch Water Glass or plastic container (Tupperware works) Spoon

HOW TO MAKE IT: - Add equal parts water and corn starch into the container.

- Stir together—you’ll quickly feel a resistance in the mixture.

- Test the properties of the mixture. Place a finger on it, and you’ll see the mixture turn into a solid.

- Add more corn starch to make a more solid substance to play with. Try heating it the microwave for 45 seconds, or placing it in the freezer for a half hour, to see how the properties change.

EGG THROUGH A BOTTLE While a hardboiled egg is often significantly larger than the mouth of a bottle, the right amount of heat pressure will pull an egg right through.

YOU’LL NEED: A small/medium hardboiled egg A glass bottle with a mouth smaller than the egg Newspaper Lighter

HOW TO DO IT: - Peel the egg.

- Cut the newspaper into a 3-inch-by-3inch piece.

BLACK LIGHT INK Petroleum jelly has many uses—one of which is ink that can only be seen under a black light. That’s because it contains phosphors, which, according to the University of Wisconsin, “absorb radiation and emit it as visible light.”

Phosphor is also found on new $20 bills and in some laundry detergents.

The egg-through-abottle trick is easy to try at home.

YOU’LL NEED: Petroleum jelly Black light Paper

- Dip a paintbrush or finger into petroleum jelly, and use the jelly to write words or make patterns on the piece of paper.

Food coloring Tall, clear glass Four small mixing cups Cup of water Cup of honey Cup of vegetable oil Cup of dishwashing solution Funnel (optional)

- In a dark room, shine the black light on the paper to reveal the writing or drawing.

- It works the same on skin. Dip a hand into the jelly and turn on the black light— the entire hand will glow in the dark.

LAYERED LIQUIDS Test the viscosity of common foods and substances by adding food coloring to common liquids and pouring them into a clear glass. Oil-based salad dressings, in which the oil and vinegar separate, are a good example of the different properties of liquids, but other household substances can have the same effects.

HOW TO MAKE IT: - Pour honey, vegetable oil, water and dishwashing solution into four separate mixing cups.

- Pour one-third cup of honey straight into the glass. Do not get any honey on the side of the glass. (This is where a funnel comes in handy.)

- Next, pour in one-third cup of dishwashing solution very slowly. The liquid will sit on top of the honey.

- Repeat the step with one-third cup of dishwashing solution.

- Try the next layer with water. Of the four substances, water is the least viscous, which means it more easily mixes with the others, so pour slowly.

- Let the liquids settle, and you’ll be able to see the different layers.

- Add a drop of food coloring to each— use a different color for each liquid.

- Fold the newspaper so it fits through the mouth of the bottle.
