Free zone Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Driving around Reno over Fourth of July weekend—including that random work day shoved into the middle there—you might have noticed the long lines of people standing outside, waiting, as if to ride a fantastic roller coaster, or get a book signed by a famous author, or attend the world’s most confusing nightclub. You might have wondered: What are all these people actually waiting for?

The answer, of course, is cannabis.

A handful of local dispensaries were allowed to start selling recreational marijuana as of midnight the morning of July 1. People showed up in droves, many of them from out of state. (Despite the fact that Nevada has long been behind the curve on cannabis, recreational legalization took effect here before it did in California.) So, those long lines of people were pouring money into the local economy—including a hefty 10 percent sales tax. Unlike some other industries, which have taken big corporate-welfare handouts from state and local coffers, cannabis is making money for the people of Nevada. But those out-of-town folks better have some local friends because public consumption is still illegal, and cannabis is banned in the casinos.

And I can’t help but feel some anger on behalf of all the Nevadans still currently serving prison sentences on possession charges courtesy of the state’s previously draconian marijuana prohibition laws.

Regardless, and despite wildfires and troubling international news, local Fourth of July celebrations felt extra jubilant this year—probably a bit like the celebrations in December of 1933 after the repeal of alcohol prohibition. You could literally smell freedom in the air.

Remember: If you want to head out to—just to pick a random example—the RN&R-sponsored Rollin’ on the River concert featuring Jelly Bread this Friday at Wingfield Park, you can’t get high and then drive, and you can’t actually toke in the park.

But you sure as hell can do so beforehand.

One patient’s experience When I was 9 years old, I was kicked by a horse. Emergency surgery was needed, I lost my spleen and half a kidney. I spent 30 days in the hospital, half of that time in ICU. My mother told me the total bill was a little over $10,000. In 1964, that was a lot of money, but we seemed to manage and my health returned.

If that accident were to occur today, what would be the cost? My daughter spent four hours in an emergency room for food poisoning and the bill was $12,000.

No one should lose everything for an unfortunate accident or illness. What kind of health bill would put seniors, women, the poor and people with preexisting conditions in a situation where either they forgo health coverage or they go in debt to pay their insurance premiums? I believe that all people have the right to a system that will take care of them, not abuse them.

Yes, I have preexisting conditions. Hard to be 60 and not have any. I have lived a full life with bumps in the road. I am lucky to have insurance. I wish everyone could.

One Christian’s response Re “A Christian view” (guest essay, May 25): The Bible may not be a science book; but when It speaks of scientific matter, It has proven to be accurate in every aspect. in the Bible that life begins at conception, it would be wise to listen.

Furthermore, science has proven life begins at conception; and yes, some major scientists agree. Both Harvard Medical School’s Dr. Micheline Matthews-Roth and the famed Dr. Jerome Lejeune (discoverer of Down Syndrome) agree that life starts at conception. Many medical textbooks concur.

If science is needed—a child’s organs are fully established by eight weeks, and his heart is pumping blood by 22 days.

Some have argued God killed Egyptian babies. God is not a “teddy bear.” He is not a cruel tyrant either. Love entails that evil is punished so that evil does not reoccur.

Egypt refused to obey God’s command to release Israel. What’s more, Egypt had already purged many Jewish babies—some during birth (see Moses’ story in Genesis).

God gave Egypt many chances to obey without being punished. He used many other judgments before taking these children home with Him. God was grieved to take children, but we all must admit it was just.

God offers both justice and mercy. Yes, there will be judgment, but there is still hope for all who trust Jesus, God’s only Son (and God Himself), alone for forgiveness and salvation from sin and death (Romans 10:9-10). Those who reject His mercy and refuse to obey by believing in Jesus, repenting of sin, and trusting Him must face judgment. God is just.

Cegavske threatens voter privacy Kansas secretary of state Kris Kobach is kind of crazy when it comes to the subject of widespread voter fraud at polling places. He claims, “Not in Kansas, but if you take some of the really big states like California, Texas—some of the states that have a large alien population—you could have more than a million votes that were not legitimate.”

He says in his own state, as many as 18,000 illegal voters are registered. How many has he convicted? Nine.

The New York Times calls him “The Man Behind Trump’s Voter-Fraud Obsession.”

Kobach doesn’t believe any of what he says, of course.

Like many Republicans, he knows there is virtually no polling place fraud. If fraud happens, it happens in the counting end, not at the polling place.

So he keeps raising the “threat” because it’s a good way to get voter identification requirements enacted, to help Republicans win elections. People without identification tend to be Democrats voters—senior citizens, minority citizens. Kobach wants his party to win elections with bureaucracy that it cannot win at the polls. Not surprisingly, Donald Trump named him to co-chair a voter fraud study commission. And Kris Kobach refuses to submit some voter registration information to that study commission!

Yet Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske is planning to hand “only the publicly available“ information on Nevadans over to the commission.

Cybersecurity experts say publicly available information, when loaded into a single central source, is the problem, and would be a threat to the rights and privacy of citizens. Barbara Cegavske does not agree.

Maryland officials called the request for voter registration records “repugnant” and refused. Virginia’s governor called it a “violation of citizens privacy rights” and, along with 20 other states, refused. Not Barbara Cegavske.

There have been repeated national studies showing polling place fraud is less common than deaths by lightning strikes. But Republican officials like Kobach and Cegavske are determined to keep this fake news story going for partisan advantage. As a member of the Nevada Legislature, Cegavske introduced voter identification requirements (“A solution without a problem,” RN&R, March 29. 2007) but when she became secretary of state she did not initially revive that effort, probably because one of her staffers then was former Carson City clerk Alan Glover, who knew how freakishly rare the problem is (“The fraud of voter fraud,” RN&R. Oct. 25, 2012).

Now she has a chance to go around state law and help federalize the problem and is using the records of Nevadans—including their social security numbers—as her battering ram.

Why are social security numbers obtained from voters in the first place? The secretary of state prescribes the form Nevada county clerks and registrars must use. Why should anyone have to submit their social security numbers to vote? The truth is, they don’t. Legally, providing the number is optional, which the form fails to disclose.

Cegavske needs to start protecting Nevadans instead of the GOP—first by refusing the Trump commission’s request, then by removing the SSN box from the voter registration form. Ω

Reality on stage She met him at work in 1988 when they were both direct care staffers at Sierra Regional Center, a state facility for those with developmental disabilities. He went home that day and told his roommate he’d just met his future wife. They were married nearly 28 years, a family with three children, when he died suddenly and unexpectedly last February, at age 50.

Tom and Kelly Cooper Brundige were compassionate soulmates who contributed greatly to our community through their professional work and their personal passion for theater and music. At the time of his death, Tom was working for the Nevada Welfare Division, heading up a project to disperse workers to community sites such as jails, courts and food pantries to assist people in gaining access to welfare services and Medicaid. He was a problem-solver, a doer, a breath of fresh air in a bureaucracy not known for innovation.

It might come as a surprise to professional colleagues to learn that Tom

was very political in his private life as a bleeding-heart Democrat who cared deeply about others. He was unafraid to engage in debate with those of opposite views, an example to many progressives who struggle to understand and communicate with conservatives.

Over the last year, Tom and Kelly devoted a lot of time to a special Artown project, the production of a Pulitzer Prize-winning musical about a woman with bipolar disorder, Next to Normal.

It’s easy to understand what attracted Tom to this particular play, given his empathy for people with mental illness and their family members. Tom was involved in the planning stages of Nevada’s first Mental Health Court, arguing successfully that the court should accept people with mental retardation and other cognitive disabilities as well as those with a severe mental illness. He was not someone who had to raise his voice to be an effective advocate. He presented his case clearly and

persuasively and people were reluctant to ever tell him “no.”

Next to Normal, a rock musical, is a local production of Bruka Theatre. The lead is Tom’s sister-in-law, Cori Lynne Cooper, an optometrist in her day job.

The play is directed by his brother-in-law, John Frederick, and the musical director is Cami Thompson, an acclaimed local singer and musician. Artistic director Mary Bennett went to high school and college with Tom. Kelly is the assistant director. These connections aren’t unusual in the world of community theater, where family is broadly defined and support is endemic.

The musical tells the story of a mother struggling with bipolar disorder and the resulting chaos within her family. The play uses music to explore themes of suicide, drug abuse, modern psychiatric drugs, grief and loss, as well as hope and happiness. It is especially powerful in realistically portraying the impact a severe mental illness has on a family

system. Next to Normal is an Artown showcase, and performances are scheduled throughout the month of July, including several matinees. Tickets can be ordered in advance at brownpapertickets.com.

When Tom first saw the play, he told Kelly it was almost “too real” in its representation of families living with a mental illness. Although the musical explores difficult themes, there are moments of lightheartedness and comedy, just like real life. Tom identified with the dad in the play and the issue of medication non-compliance, which touched so many families he worked with over the years, and he thought these very families were people who should see it.

Bruka Theatre and the cast of Next to Normal have given these families the opportunity to observe their last rehearsal before the play opens tomorrow evening as a tribute to Tom. His spirit is surely smiling somewhere, watching his vision become reality. Ω

The eternal question Why are there more gays?

The Cooperative Congressional Election Study (#CCUS2016) published a graph that purported to show an increase since the 2012 election of 15 percent in those identifying as bisexual.

Some then asked, “If homosexuality is innate, why are the numbers increasing?”

What is more important to sexual orientation—your innate characteristics, or your upbringing and environment?

The left as a whole believes that your sexuality is hardwired, innate, you did not and could not choose your orientation, especially LGBTA. The right is actually more inclined to believe that your sexuality is on a continuum, and is sometimes changeable.

Although many on the right proclaim themselves rigidly heterosexual, the libertarian/conservative mind generally believes in free will.

If there is an uptick in the number of gays, wouldn’t that indicate learned behavior? In the new, post-Obergefell v.

Hodges world, will more people walk on the wild side who wouldn’t have in more repressed times?

When traditional Christian blogger Rod Dreher posed this question, gay marriage champion Andrew Sullivan accused Dreher of a belief in “latent homosexuality,” and of advocating a return to closets.

Dreher argued, if someone were conflicted with gender disphoria in adolescence but was primarily straight, and if a more traditionalist society did not encourage him to live out his occasional gay fantasies, might he be better off? If he married, had a family, and lived relatively happily, would he be better off than if he indulged his desires and then had identity problems for years, possibly a bad marriage? What about the children?

Only individuals have rights, but the first social organization is the family.

Christians and others who believe in traditional marriage believe that the family is the cornerstone of the community, and the community both supports and is supported

by family. They are distressed by what they see as the dissolution of the family in a post-Christian world.

Many who supported gay marriage said they were persuaded by arguments that if gays had no choice but to be gay, they should have equal rights to marriage.

But then, how does the new liberal belief that you can be whatever sex you identify yourself as, anytime you decide to, square with the Doctrine of Innateness?

And if sexual identity is plastic, then shouldn’t parents be able to try to instill a desire for a traditional marriage in a minor in their household who is confused? Is that always harmful to the minor child? What if the young person is primarily straight but has secondary homosexual desires?

Shouldn’t traditionalist parents have access to psychological help in cultivating heterosexual feelings they believe will bring their offspring happiness but, most importantly, spiritual wellness?

Not according to the Nevada Legislature, which banned conversion

therapy (as opposed to perhaps regulating it), even if the minor wanted it.

But Gov. Sandoval did veto Assembly Bill 348, which would have required parents to opt out instead of opt into sex education for their children. That gives traditionalists some shelter in the storm. They do not have to opt their children out of the new orthodoxy. The clinical health class lectures on sex are preserved as the norm.

The traditional religious viewpoint on marriage is under attack by what Dreher calls “the law of merited impossibility.” The liberal left pretends to be understanding and compassionate, while continuing their attacks on the marriage traditionalists. Traditionalists are now the ones forced into closets.

We may never settle the nature-ornurture debate. While we try, shouldn’t we acknowledge and respect the different views and lifestyles that we may have chosen if indeed we had a choice? Ω

FBI agent charged

Money for a private school grant program came out of public school budgets, which caused it to be overturned by the Nevada Surpreme Court.

FBI agent Joseph Astarita was indicted on federal charges of lying about whether he fired at a participant in the armed takeover and occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon last year. The indictment, kept secret until June 28, did not accuse Astarita of killing Robert Finicum— spokesperson for the occupiers—but said the FBI investigation indicated one of its agents had fired, but none of the FBI agents on the scene said they had done so. There is still an ongoing probe into whether the other agents participated in a coverup.

It can be a federal crime to “knowingly and willfully” make false, fictitious or fraudulent statements or representations or conceal information. The indictment said Astarita “falsely stated he had not fired his weapon during the attempted arrest of Robert LaVoy Finicum, when he knew then and there that he had fired his weapon.”

Malheur, once Paiute tribal territory, is located in eastern Oregon, south of Burns and about 140 miles north of the Nevada border. The occupation of the refuge was led by Nevada resident Ammon Bundy, who participated in the 2014 armed standoff at his father’s Clark County ranch.

Yucca agaIn The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee voted 49 to 4 on June 28 to transfer some land for the proposed Yucca Mountain dump for high level nuclear wastes in Nye County, and to set a time limit for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to approve the project.

It was the first step in reviving the project after Republicans took House and Senate majorities and won appointment of a U.S. president.

U.S. Reps. Greg Walden of Oregon, Fred Upton of Michigan and John Shimkus of Illinois issued a joint statement saying the dump would be helpful to taxpayers, communities and ratepayers. It would certainly be helpful to their political futures—Upton has three nuclear power plants in his state, Shimkus has another three, and Walden has one. But that’s not all. Walden last week wrote an essay for East Oregonian that called for finishing the cleanup of the Hanford site in his state of Oregon that is permeated with radioactive contamination from decades of federal activity and dumping the waste at Yucca. Nevada uses no nuclear energy and has no nuclear power plants.

U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei issued a statement after the vote that never gave his position on Yucca: “I assume no one is surprised this bill started moving. The fact that the vote out of Committee was 49-4, and not a party-line vote, leads me to suspect this is a sign of things to come in the House.

Another fact of note—when attempting to predict the future of this legislation—is the fact that Department of Energy Secretary Rick Perry was confirmed in the Senate with a recorded vote of 62-37. We will continue to direct our efforts at providing the best possible protection for Nevadans.”

Workers stuck with check Private schools steadily losing students after a two-year battle in which a Republican legislature created a program that pays parents up to $5,700 in grants to take their children out of public schools, followed by the GOP losing its majorities and the new Democratic legislature shutting down the program, it appears the entire exercise was aimed at a very small—and steadily dwindling—portion of the population.

Although some politicians paint a picture of parents unhappy with the public schools and removing their children to private schools in a mass exodus, in fact, the number of children in public schools has been growing, and the number in private schools declining. Only one segment of private schools—non-religious institutions—has seen growth, and it was so slight that it was overwhelmed by the overall trend. In Nevada, religious schools

are generally seen as the best private schools available.

In 1995, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, 11.7 percent of students in the United States attended private elementary and secondary schools. Since then, that percentage has declined steadily—going up in some years, but always inexorably in decline over the long term. By 2013—the most recent year for which there are complete figures—it was down to 9.8 percent.

This trend is even more pronounced in the West, where the 1995 percentage was just 10 percent, down to 7.9 by 2013—both lower than the national figures.

In addition, as parents gain experience with private education, they seem to become more skeptical. In 1995, kindergarten through eighth grade students in private schools made up 12.8

percent of the student population. By 2013, the grades nine through 12 cohort had dropped to 8.2 percent.

Enrollment in Catholic schools, the largest group of private schools, fell by 22.7 percent from 1995 to 2013.

Richard Rothstein of the Economic Policy Institute in D.C. said, “There has been a very small increase in enrollment in non-religious private schools, more than offset by a large decline in Catholic school enrollment.”

Within Christian conservative schools, the decline was 10.11 percent.

Among all remaining religious-affiliated schools, the decline was 18.9 percent.

Among non-sectarian schools was the only sign of growth—16.62 percent from 1995 to 2013.

That was not enough to staunch the number of parents voting with their feet against private schools—a decline of 8.82 percent in all private schools, from 5,918,040 in 1995 to 5,395,740 in 2013.

Though we have not been able to locate many intra-Nevada figures, we did learn that just 5.34 percent of Washoe County students attend private school.

by George W. Bush and other politicians to suggest that parents are taking their children out of public schools and putting them into private schools in increasing numbers (“Tales out of school,” RN&R, June 12, 2012).

Last month, a Chicago Tribune editorial read in part, “Area students are voting with their feet and traveling long distances for better educational opportunities. Four in 10 Englewood-area high schoolers travel 4 miles or more to attend charters and other stronger schools outside the community, CPS [Chicago Public Schools] reports.”

A work of art gave its owner a ride through history

The painting

I

n the mid 1980s, I stopped in at Hermitage Gallery on California Avenue on some business. While waiting, I wandered around looking at pieces of art. I noticed a Polaroid print of a painting—a watercolor—on a table.

I stared at the photo for a few moments.

Something about the painting grabbed me. It was Saturday, and only one employee was in the place. I pulled out a business card and wrote something like “If anyone can tell me anything about this painting, please call me” on it, clipped it to the photo, and left it on the table.

The following Monday, I received a call. “It’s by a painter named Burr, and it is a painting of a village in Yugoslavia,” I was told. She had little more information, and the price was well out of the price range of a local television reporter, so I thanked her and forgot it.

A month or so later, I received another call from the gallery. “That painting you asked about is on its way through Reno, if you would like to see it.”

Later that day, I stopped at the gallery. The painting was propped up on the arms of a chair. I sank to my knees in front of it. The village, with a bridge at its center, appeared frozen in time.

It had likely been painted recently, as it looked in the 1980s, but it seemed unlikely the village had changed much in decades, or centuries. If the photo had grabbed me, the feelings stirred up inside me by the real thing were even more powerful. I gazed at the painting for several minutes. But the price was still prohibitive, and I thanked them. Walking out of that store without that painting was very, very difficult, and I suspect the employees had seen it happen before.

I did my best to forget it. Time passed.

In 1987, I was appointed chief deputy secretary of state of Nevada. Along with the job went a substantial increase in pay. One of the first things I did was call the gallery and ask them to find out if the piece was still available. I told the person I reached that I would commit to buying it then and there if the price was the same.

A couple of days later she called back. “The painting never sold. In fact, it has been put

into storage. The price is still the same, plus shipping charges.”

Not long afterward, 30 years ago this year, the painting was on my wall. To this day I cannot say why it took hold of me so. Art is like that, sometimes.

Bridge to the past In succeeding years, I began to wonder about the artist, whether he had named the painting, and what village was portrayed. The internet was not yet the resource it is today, but I did learn there were a lot of artists out there named Burr. I was halfway hoping it would turn out to be Bill Burr, my onetime art teacher, but it wasn’t likely—the signature on the painting read JBurr. I found out there were a lot of artists named J. Burr, too.

Nor, without the artist, did I learn anything about the subject of the painting or its title.

I called the gallery at one point, but did not receive a call back.

On Sept. 8, 1993, I was reading my morning New York Times. Then and now, there is a space on the lower left of the editorial page for essays.

On this morning, there was an essay by Mary Cantwell, an author and Times editorial writer.

The essay was only 728 words long, took up only a few inches and discussed a trip Cantwell took to Yugoslavia 23 years earlier.

In the center of the essay, about two inches square, was a photograph she had taken on that trip. There was the bridge and town in my painting.

The town was Mostar, in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Once I knew about Mostar, I was able to research both it and the bridge. In addition, once I knew the names, I began seeing more and more references to them.

The bridge was called Stari Most, or Old Bridge. Designed and built by student architect Mimar Hayruddin at the order of Suleiman I, sultan of the Ottoman empire, construction of the bridge began in 1557 and was completed nine years later.

In earlier times, before Stari Most was built, towns on the two sides of the river were called Cimski grad and Nebojša. Bridges over the Neretva River and their bridge-keepers—the mostari—gave a

name to the united town—Mostar, or Bridgekeeper. The Hayruddin bridge became famous as an architectural masterpiece.

More than that, Mostar was a place where people of different faiths had considerable success in living together amicably. A UNESCO World Heritage Centre report reads, “Architecture here presented a symbol of tolerance: a shared life of Muslims, Christians and Jews. Mosques, churches and synagogues existed side-by-side indicating that in this region, the Roman Catholic Croats with their Western European culture, the Eastern Orthodox Serbs with their elements of Byzantine culture, and the Sephardic Jews continued to live together with the Bosniaks-Muslims for more than four centuries. A specific regional architecture was thus created and left behind a series of unique

architectural achievements, mostly modest by physical dimensions, but of considerable importance for the cultural history of its people. The creative process produced a constant flow of various cultural influences that, like streams merging into a single river, became more than a mere sum of the individual contributing elements.”

Cantwell described the climate in Mostar, as she had found it in 1970, more simply: “I was fascinated by the jumble of Muslim minarets, Greek Orthodox domes and Roman Catholic spires.

Everyone else, or so it seemed to me, took that jumble for granted.”

who tested their nerve by diving into the water 70 feet below.”

The bridge was a major tourist attraction.

Direct hit In the 1980s, severe economic troubles in Yugoslavia caused a crisis of confidence in the central government. Politicians were ready with efforts to whip up nationalist feelings and ethnic resentments. Political instability led to cultural divisions and a proliferation of political parties.

Although both Mostar and its bridge had come to symbolize the ability of competing ethnicities to live together in the town, over time the poisons of ethnic tensions seeped into the town. Many made the mistake of listening to their leaders. Soon there were stories of Croatians in west Mostar and Bosnians on the east bank planning a partition of the city.

By 1993, of course, Yugoslavia had come apart as Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo had declared their independence or otherwise gone their ways. And by the time I learned of the setting for my painting, push had already come to shove in Mostar, where the city was divided into religions and ethnicities, and some talked of the town’s end being near. Just a few days after I read Cantwell’s essay, I read a chilling sentence in Time: “But unless peace comes soon, U.N. aid can only postpone the death of one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most beautiful cities.”

published, the Associated Press reported, “Like many Bosnian cities, prewar Mostar saw Muslims, Serbs and Croats living together in relative harmony. When war erupted, Muslims and Croats teamed up to oust Serb rebels who opposed Bosnian independence from Yugoslavia. Now the Croats are trying to kick out the Muslims. Many now trapped in eastern Mostar were rousted from their homes on the western side by Croat nationalists, who envision the city as the capital of a Croat state. … Streets that run parallel to the Neretva River are relatively safe from Croat snipers. Those rising at right angles to the channel are directly in the line of fire. West of the river, the city is virtually clear of Muslims. For the more than 60,000 people under siege in the eastern quarter, shelling and sniper fire provide a jolting backdrop to relentless hunger and privation.”

A restoration of the bridge that took 20 years had recently been completed. When war broke out in 1992, the symbolism of Mostar and the bridge confronted the Serbs, who began shelling the bridge in April. A year later something happened that prompted the Croat military to take over the job.

Broadcast producer Michael Linder: “Mostar saw some of the heaviest fighting in all of Bosnia. In 1992, it was Croats and Muslims versus the Bosnian Serb Army. Then, in 1993, for reasons not fully explained, the Croats and Muslims turned on each other and began a new round of violence that must have shocked even the Serbs. Very ugly scenes played themselves out here. The Muslims were again outgunned—this time by their former allies. ... The Serbs, still on the high ground, were no doubt laughing while the former allies blasted each other into oblivion.”

The fighting was so fierce and drawn-out that Wikipedia today has an entry titled “Siege

of Mostar” dealing with 1992 and 1993-94.

Still, the city’s history of cooperation was a challenge to the forces who wanted both the city and Bosnia and Herzegovina eliminated. Stari Most in particular, as a symbol of amity, was targeted by first Serb and then Croat artillery.

What had caused Cantwell to dig out her old photo of the bridge was seeing a Washington Post photo that showed the bridge in 1993. In the Post photo, it was badly damaged, covered with a fragile roof and automobile tires to try to protect it from vibrations and the shelling.

Daily bombardment took its toll not just on the bridge but on the surrounding town. It began to look like Dresden. But Mostar and Stari Most still existed.

Then, on Nov. 9, 1993, the artillery scored a direct hit. The bridge fell into the river in pieces. Footage taken at the time shows billows of dust obscuring the scene.

When I heard about it a few days later, I went home and sat down and gazed at my painting for a very long time. Against the sound of a river—I then lived on the bank of the Truckee—I wondered how the Mostar that had existed when it was painted had come to this. Some said the gunners wanted to destroy the bridge as a symbol, others that they were trying to wipe out Turkish influence. I suspected they were seeking reasons where reason did not exist.

Symbolism is reversed The tragedy continued to unfold until the Dayton peace settlement of 1995. It has been praised as an effective instance of conflict resolution followed by a period of reconstruction.

Perhaps, but on the ground in Mostar, feelings that had run so deep could not be repaired so

easily. In the first postwar election, AP reported, “Hundreds of Bosnians expelled from their homes in Muslim-Croat fighting crossed to the other side of the divided city of Mostar to vote in Bosnia’s first postwar election. The municipal election in this medieval valley town, which straddles a river separating Muslim east from Croat west, is a crucial test for the Dayton peace accord. … Across from the polling station where Muslims were voting in Croat-held west Mostar, a Croat cafe owner blasted anthems of the Ustasha, the Croatian Nazi puppet regime that controlled much of Bosnia during World War II. A group of 135 Serb refugees returning Saturday night for the election ran a gauntlet of hostile Muslims as they got off their buses in the Muslim east. Police arrested three Muslims in the scuffle. ... The European Union, which has administered Mostar since 1994, registered voters in the precincts they inhabited in 1991 so as not to concede any victory to the policies of ‘ethnic cleansing’ that fueled much of the war. On Sunday, hundreds of Croat refugees in west Mostar boarded buses headed east, as their Muslim counterparts headed west. For some, the neighborhoods they returned to were virtually unrecognizable.”

The bridge that had been a symbol of harmony had become a symbol of something very different. CNN: “Its destruction by Croat forces caused international outrage. The broken arch became a symbol of the division of Mostar between its Croat inhabitants in the west and Muslims in the east. The two communities are still deeply divided, despite intense international diplomatic efforts to reunite them. …

The reconstruction of the bridge is expected to cost more than $7 million. Turkey has donated $1 million, and other countries and international organizations are expected to contribute to the effort. Rebuilding the rest of historic Mostar is estimated at $35 million.”

The town that had symbolized harmony no longer did. The London Guardian described Mostar as “a city long an emblem for the bigotry and apartheid blighting Bosnia,” a breach with the town’s pre-war reputation.

In 1997, four years after I learned the identity of the town in my painting—an identity that had since undergone sharp changes—NATO’s Stabilization Force began raising pieces of the bridge from the Neretva River. The World Bank and UNESCO joined the effort on July 30, 1998.

Los Angeles Times: Mostar’s “survivors hope that resurrecting the bridge will prove that anything is possible—even the vision of Muslims and Croats living together again without fear. The project is a risky, $14-million enterprise that could just as well revive old hatreds, raise false hopes and leave Mostar with monumental proof that there is no way back. … Experts are just beginning to determine how much of the Stari Most can be saved and how many years it’s going to take.

Many of Mostar’s people are in a hurry. They want proof that the multiethnic Bosnia-Herzegovina of old can be reclaimed. Now. While they watch and try to will the builders to succeed, others are waiting and praying that the Stari Most—and the Bosnia it stood for—are gone forever. … After the Bosnian war ended in December 1995, Mostar was reunited—on paper.”

The bridge reconstruction took longer, cost more, and was more complicated than originally expected.

The large chunks of the bridge in the river may have altered its flow, undercutting the foundations of the two sides. Archives in Istanbul and Sarajevo were tapped. Research into construction techniques of 400 years ago and the nature of the original mortar was

undertaken. But all problems were dealt with, and the bridge was rebuilt.

On the day it opened—July 23, 2004—the London Guardian said Paddy Ashdown, the British leader who served as the Dayton Peace Implementation Council’s high representative to Bosnia, “has imposed unity” on Mostar.

Unity that must be imposed is hardly unity, and the progress has been very slow. On the same day, the BBC reported that the bridge’s “reopening is being seen as symbolic of the healing of divisions between Muslims and Croats”—but gave no evidence for that hopeful view. It seemed more like upbeat spin.

“The destruction of this great bridge a decade ago brought home to millions around the world the full force of the evil that was happening here,” Ashdown said. “I hope and believe that its reopening today will be an equally powerful moment.” But from the perspective of 2017, Mostar is still troubled.

Coda News from Mostar this year has not been good.

I found one site that reported, “Located in southern Bosnia, Mostar has emerged from the traumatic shadow of the Balkan war, and is now being fully appreciated for its stunning natural beauty and unique cultural attractions.” But it was a tourism promotion site.

It is easier to break things than to put them back together.

In 1993, when Cantwell saw the photo of the badly damaged Stari Most in the Washington Post, she wrote, “I would never have guessed it was my bridge—my bridge because love confers possession, if only in my mind. And I had loved Mostar.”

My painting gave me the same sense of affection, and of sadness, and I hope the time will come when the Mostar that existed in the painting comes to be again. In the meantime, I have found that when history and art meet, it can teach—if there are those willing to learn. Ω

hat do knitting a pair of socks, playing eerie melodies on a theremin, and building a robot from scrap materials have in common? They’re all activities you can expect to see at this year’s Reno Mini Maker Faire. It’s the local version of the original Maker Faire, established

by MAKE Magazine in 2006 and held in San Mateo, California.

“It’s a celebration of the maker movement,” said event organizer Tara Radniecki. “It’s a place where people show what they are making and share what they are learning. Makers range from tech enthusiasts to crafters to homesteaders to scientists to garage tinkerers. They are of all ages and backgrounds. The aim of Maker Faire is to entertain, inform, connect and grow this community in Northern Nevada.”

Attendees can expect a mix of art, technology and projects based around enviromental sustainability such as solar ovens and art made from recycled materials. The faire emphasizes learning, so local organizations 14 | RN&R | 07.06.17

provide opportunities to partake in hands-on projects or watch demonstrations on musical instruments, virtual reality, rocket building, soldering and coding, just to name a few.

“This year we will also be hosting some Nevada FIRST Robotics teams, several local startups, including Breadware, and activity booths from local makerspaces, including Bridgewire and DeLaMare Science & Engineering Library,” Radniecki said.

She is an engineering librarian at the University of Nevada, Reno’s DeLaMare Library, which has its own makerspace, providing electronics kits, tools and software for students and members of the community.

Historically, the library has hosted maker events, including Microsoft’s yearly hackathon and the NASA Space Apps Challenge, in which participants develop projects to solve questions posed by NASA. Library director Tod Colegrove travels internationally to share the experiences of the library with others in the profession, and what was once a quiet, uninhabited building in the middle of UNR’s campus is now frequently bustling with tinkering students from all disciplines.

“All humans are makers by our very nature,” said Radniecki. “We are constantly learning new skills and knowledge and using them to make, fix and solve things. We fix our own cars, knit our own sweaters, build our own robots, grow our own food, and make beautiful art with our own hands.”

She quoted former Mythbusters host Adam Savage, who said, “Humans do two things that make us unique from all other animals: we use tools, and we tell stories. And when you make something, you’re doing both at once.”

“And I believe the stories he is talking about don’t have to be the clear-cut type you read in a book, but rather the story of us,” said Radniecki. “The story of who we are, what we learned, and how we choose to spend our time creating and making.”

For decades, a homegrown art movement has distinguished Reno from other similarly sized cities. In the past few years, a more techfocused community has arisen.

“Reno has an exciting and vibrant maker culture, including tech startups, Burning Man artists, researchers in the university’s labs, and everything in between,” said Radniecki. She

Bread winners This mix of creativity and business is what drew Breadware, a new hardware company, to Reno in March. Breadware was founded in Seattle, then moved to Santa Barbara, before finding a home in Northern Nevada.

The maker movement has a head start on smart cities, since products like Breadware allow anyone to create IoT projects for their homes and cities.

According to Daniel Price, Breadware’s CEO, the lower cost of running a business in Nevada was a selling point, but the maker mentality of its inhabitants was the real draw. He cited Reno’s “entrepreneurial vigor” and said, “It’s small enough that you can insert yourself into it and make a splash.”

Price and deLaveaga cite other local maker companies, such as Vital Systems and Filament, as another reason to move to town. In April, Filament closed a funding round of $15 million venture financing. There’s money to be made in the maker world, but it requires a dedicated community to support such projects.

“I like how the Reno community in itself is really good at combining the art and the tech,” said deLaveaga. “It’s not

thinks it’s important that cities acknowledge and support makers. She also said that maker cultures support the economic health of communities.

“While making can certainly be something we do just for ourselves, it also has the potential to turn into a viable business,” she said. “We have seen people who initially just set out to make something for themselves realize that the problem they are solving is experienced by others. Local makers-turned-entrepreneurs of note include Roger Floren, who runs Tahoe Wood Maps—a business that makes laser-cut art pieces of Lake Tahoe and other regions—and underwear subscription service Panty Drop, started after a Startup Weekend Reno event.

Breadware’s business is twofold—they provide development software to help companies develop their own custom hardware, and they also create hardware kits that makers can use in conjunction with microcontrollers such as Arduino. This type of technology is part of the “Internet of Things” (IoT) world, in which different devices can all speak to one another using a central language.

“Oftentimes when I meet people out in the real world, they don’t even know what IoT stands for,” said Anela deLaveaga, Breadware’s creative director. “Honestly, it’s becoming such a big part of what culture is going to be dictated by. Cities are adopting IoT through smart cities initiatives.”

“Smart city” projects are intended to make cities more sustainable and automated —for example, creating street lights that turn off to conserve energy when no one is around.

IoT devices can measure things like light pollution and air quality, and then trigger other devices to react to that data. According to a 2015 Forbes report, more than $400

The maker movement thrives on this balance between creativity and logic.

Breadware conducted focus groups with UNR students in social sciences and creative writing, and the students were quickly able to create their own cloud-based applications.

The opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration are endless, said Price.

This is the foundation of Maker Faire— making these experiences widely accessible, exercising values such as diversity and inclusiveness.

“We see it at the Generator, a free space where you’ll find everyone from Burning Man artists working on large-scale projects to retirees using the wood shop for small projects for their homes,” said Radniecki.

“Developing and encouraging a maker culture in Northern Nevada brings people together from all backgrounds, ages and experiences to share knowledge and skills in a safe and supportive community,” she said. Ω

Traces of history Mountain Picassos Have you ever noticed that Fallon, Garderville, Winnemucca and several other Nevada towns all have hotels called “The Overland”?

Nevada used to have a large sheepherding industry—one estimate says there were about a million sheep in the state at the turn of the 20th century—and these Overland Hotels, which tend to still have Basque restaurants, used to be bunkhouses for sheepherders, most of whom were Basque immigrants.

According to Patricia Atkinson, the Nevada Arts Council’s folklife director, these sheepherders would work on contracts for a year or two, sometimes five. Supplied with a rifle, a dog and a large herd of sheep, each herder would work alone, camping from June through October in aspen groves. Many of these men left their marks—in the form of drawings called arborglyphs, carved into the smooth, white bark of the aspens.

“They carved names, years, slogans glorifying the Basque country, images of people from home in traditional costume ... traditional house types, images of home,” said Atkinson. “Some were done more crudely, some with more expertise.”

One notable subject matter omission suggests that perhaps the herders liked to get their minds off work at the end of the day. “No sheep carvings,” Atkinson said.

“Nobody’s ever seen a sheep carving.”

Over years and decades, as the trees grew, the sheepherders’ lines were transformed from thin knife cuts into prominent, textured, black scars in the bark.

The profession eventually dwindled, but observant hikers can still see these carvings in remote, forested spots such as Maggie Summit, Hinkey Summit, Genoa Peak and Arc Dome Wilderness. There are also quite a few on Reno’s Peavine Mountain.

Aspen trees don’t live forever—about 80 years, Atkinson estimated—so the traces of this forest folk art will eventually die out. On Peavine, about half the trees that have carvings have died since the mid-1980s.

In the late 1960s, Jean and Phillip Earl began documenting the carvings. They realized that photographs weren’t quite the right medium for recording them, since the “canvasses” were rounded tree trunks and, prior to the smartphone panoramic photo feature, it wasn’t always possible to get the whole image into one frame. Gravestonetype rubbings on paper weren’t quite right either. The paper would rip. Jean devised a method of recording the carvings by tacking a sheet of fabric tightly around a tree trunk and making a rubbing with black wax.

The Earls have made over 150 of these reproductions, and 26 of them are in an exhibit that’s been traveling the state and is on display in Sparks this summer.

Atkinson is co-curator of the exhibit, along with Sheryln Hayes Zorn from the Nevada Historical Society.

Seeing these reproductions in frames in a gallery is quite different from stumbling upon a cluster of them in the wilderness.

The surprise value of seeing them in the forest is something you can only get in the forest. And the “adult content”—drawings of women as imagined by young men living in isolation—that’s conspicuously common on the trees has been left out this survey to keep it PG. But the reproductions are still a joy to look at. They exude a sense of care and affection for the original works, and they do maintain a lot of the carvings’ charm. And while the aim of making them was to document a form of folk art that will eventually fade from history, they work, for now anyway, as an armchair travel guide to one of the not-too-hard-to-access wonders in our own backyard. Ω

“i’m going to wrap those headphones around your neck.”

Whiz kid Geeks like me have been bitching about director Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man exodus for a couple of years now.

Wright was hard at work on Ant-Man for the better part of a decade, but left abruptly during production due to “creative differences.” We wound up getting an OK Ant-Man from director Peyton Reed, while Wright announced his next project to be an original, penned-by-him car chase movie.

My initial reaction to that news was “Farts!” But the final product, starring Ansel Elgort as a getaway driver with tinnitus—an adverse hearing condition made famous by Pete Townshend of The Who—is a great time.

It’s a nice car chase movie antidote to The Fate of the Furious, a car chase movie that made me never want to see a car chase movie again, let alone Vin Diesel’s mushy mug. The soundtrack is one of the year’s best, and the guy in the title role is a major star in the making.

Elgort plays Baby, who we see in the film’s opening sequence driving the getaway car for a robbery, a kinetic chase choreographed to the great Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s “Bellbottoms.” The scene snaps with a colorful energy that’s been missing from car chases of late.

The best car chase movie in years, Drive, also featured a lonely driver and great vroom-vroom, but the soundtrack and look for that film were more meditative and hazy—not complaining; it worked beautifully. Baby Driver opts for a more clear-eyed, zippy approach, and it pays off.

Baby winds up on various crews run by a criminal kingpin played by Kevin Spacey reliving the angrier portion of his Glengarry Glen Ross role.

Baby owes the man, and he has to drive getaway until he pays him off. At least, he thinks that’s what the deal is.

The chases go off with precision editing, filmed in a way that makes you feel like you are in the car.

And the soundtrack, featuring music ranging from

Simon and Garfunkel to Hocus Pocus to Queen, perfectly complements them.

The supporting cast includes Lily James, who enchants as Baby’s love interest, diner waitress Debora. (Cue the Beck song.) Jon Hamm gets a chance to go psycho as Buddy, a role that is deceptively laid back until Baby flips his switch.

Jamie Foxx does a killer turn as Bats, the hothead of the crew that is equal parts smart and paranoid maniac. And, in one of the year’s great cameos, the one and only Paul Williams—the man who penned the Muppets’ “Rainbow Connection”—shows up as a gun dealer. I’m a child of the ’70s, and I love that little guy!

Wright has called the movie an homage to the likes of Reservoir Dogs, Heat and The Blues Brothers. He also cites Point Break, which is definitely evident in the use of Halloween masks for heists and the presence of Flea as one of the robbers. In a different sort of homage, Elgort sports a jacket that has a Han Solo look to it, perhaps a nod to his having been in the running for the role of young Han Solo last year.

If you plan on seeing Baby Driver in a theater, make sure that theater has a premium sound system.

The one I saw it in had sound that was a little too muddy and soft, and it did little to drown out the ringing in my ears that I suffer from after listening to Who/Pete Townshend albums cranked up on my headphones. There was no bass in my theater. I was a little sad.

The summer had stalled out a bit after that Transformers fiasco, but Baby Driver gets things back on a confident route. Does this movie make up for the loss of Wright on Ant-Man? Nah, I’m still going to bitch about that. But it is a nice addition to the Wright movie canon, and proof that the guy can do no wrong. Ω

Cars 3

The Cars franchise gets a nice little rebirth with Cars 3, a much, much better movie than Cars 2, and a slightly better movie than the first Cars. If you’re keeping score— and, really, you shouldn’t be, for there are far more pressing matters in your life—that still makes Cars 3 one of the more mediocre offerings from Pixar. Still, a mediocre Pixar film is better than most animated movies. Jettisoning the stupid spy movie bullshit—oops, I just cursed in a review for a G-rated movie … sorry, kids—that made the last installment convoluted and useless, the folks at Pixar choose to go an earthier, more emotional route with this one, and it works, for the most part. They also find a way to get the voice of the late Paul Newman into the mix, and hearing his beautiful growl again definitely warms the heart. Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is getting on in years, and he’s facing fierce competition from newer model cars like Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer), a strong, highly-trained vehicle that is beating McQueen on the racetrack. After a calamitous accident that renders his beautiful red sheen primer gray, McQueen is faced with either retirement or a new training regime comeback, Rocky III-style. The movie plays around with the notions of retirement and the rites of passage to the next generation, pretty heady stuff for a G-rated animated movie. Give the screenwriters credit for finally coming up with a story for Lightning McQueen that caters as much to adults as it does to kids.

The Hero

Lee, an aging movie star (Sam Elliot) gets some bad news from his doctor and tries to make good on some mistakes in the face of some big decisions. If that sounds like a done-to-death story for you, it kind of is, but director and co-screenwriter Brett Haley makes things intriguing, thanks to a great performance from Elliot and an excellent supporting cast. Elliot is basically playing himself, a western star known for his big voice and iconic moustache, and the part was tailor made for him. His Lee is sort of a jerk, but the kind of jerk you have to like. The way that moustache arches with his smile is magical. Nick Offerman is stellar as Lee’s drug dealer and best buddy, while Laura Prepon has never been better as “the love interest.” Yes, it’s a cliché role, but she takes it to great heights. Elliot’s real-life wife, the great Katharine Ross, even has a role as Lee’s ex-wife, which must’ve been a little awkward to pull off on set. The film looks great, especially during Lee’s dreams, which have him acting out a final movie in his head. In a summer of blockbusters and blockbuster wannabes, this stands as one of its fine sleepers.

Maudie

Okja

There isn’t a single wrong note in Maudie, an alternately heartbreaking and uplifting biofilm about the life of Canadian painter Maud Lewis (Sally Hawkins). After answering an ad for a housekeeper in Nova Scotia, Maud, stricken with arthritis since she was a child, winds up in the house of miserable bastard Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke, delivering yet another monumental performance). The two wind up married, but it’s no fairytale. Everett has some major, major issues that Maud must contend with, and when Maud finds fame with her sweet paintings, Everett becomes an even bigger jerk. Hawkins is a true Oscar contender here. The role of Lewis is physically strenuous, and the light in her voice gives the character an illuminating quality. The humor always shines through, and it’s breathtaking how good she is. Hawke never gives up the ghost on his character, one of unrelenting stubbornness afflicted with a permanent scowl. He could find himself in the Oscar race, as well. If there’s an underlying message to this movie it’s this—if you love somebody, you better damn well act like you mean it before it’s too late.

biogenetically engineered for slaughter. The title character is a prized, giant animal raised in the mountains by Mija (Seo Hyun), a young girl who thinks Okja is her pet. She’s oblivious to the fact that Okja’s days are numbered, so when an envoy for a large corporation (Jake Gyllenhaal going nuts) shows up and takes Okja away, Mija flies into action, and the bizarre adventure begins. Paul Dano, one of the kings of movie weirdness, chips in as the leader of an animal rescue corps that includes Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) and Lily Collins. Following up her collaboration with Bong on Snowpiercer is Tilda Swinton, once again playing twins, as she did in Hail, Caesar!, two evil sisters running the corporation that produced Okja. The movie mixes absurd laughs with mayhem, and the cast is universally great. Like films such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Babe before it, this movie looks to shine a light on the cruel treatment of animals and perhaps get you to pass on the bacon the next time you are at Denny’s. It’s streaming on Netflix.

Transformers: The Last Knight

The latest Transformers movie, Transformers: The Last Knight, gets the dubious distinction of being the worst in the series. That is some sort of major accomplishment. It’s not the easiest thing in the world to look at this collective pile of movie manure and decipher which of the five is the worst. It’s like going to a frat house the first week of a semester at Dickhead University and trying to pick out the dumbest, drunkest douche in the place. All of the qualifiers are terribly, criminally lame. I’m giving the award of franchise worst because it’s just so clear how every participant in this enterprise, from director Michael Bay right on down to the production assistant who smeared glycerin on Mark Wahlberg’s pecs, is jaded, tired and played out.

Nobody really wants to be in this thing. The stink of “Who gives a shit … just pay me!” hits your nostrils with Wahlberg’s first line delivery.

The best part of this movie is when Anthony Hopkins inexplicably goes to Stonehenge to witness a robot battle then gets blown up, leading to the silliest death scene ever. Yep, I just issued a spoiler. Anthony Hopkins, who should be ashamed of himself for participating in this thing, dies hilariously in this movie. I hope this spoiler pisses you off so much that you don’t go to the movie. Be mad at me for the next 10 years, but I know I did you a favor.

Wonder Woman

The DC Universe gets the blast of fun it sorely needed with a film that gets it right on almost every front, and features a performance from Gal Gadot that makes it seem the role was her birthright. Gadot lights up the screen and commands the camera on a level with Christopher Reeve and Robert Downey, Jr., in past films of the superhero genre. She simply is Wonder Woman to the extent that I can’t picture another actress ever even attempting to play the character again. She owns it. It’s hers. Game over. There’s always that faction of fans who bitch about superhero origin stories, wanting these films to jump straight to the hardcore action, but I love a good superhero origin story done well, and this is one of them. The movie starts with young Amazonian princess Diana running around in her island paradise, practicing her fight moves and yearning to be trained as a warrior. After butting heads with her sister Antiope, Diana’s mother, Hippolyta, relents, and allows Antiope to train Diana, as long as she doesn’t tell her about the true powers she possesses. For those who don’t know the Wonder Woman back story—I was a little rusty on it myself—it’s a sweet little piece of mythology and mystery, and director Patty Jenkins (the Charlize Theron Oscar vehicle Monster) perfectly paces all the revelations. It says a lot that Gadot and Jenkins make you feel good in a movie that has its share of violence and villainy in it.

Ship shaped Of the previous eateries that have occupied a certain boat-shaped building in Sparks, Mariscos El Barco is likely the most apt combination of name and theme.

The seafood-heavy menu looked good, but the level of service was lacking. It took nearly 30 minutes for a server to take my friend’s and my order—and more than twice that long before we received the check. Two hours seems a bit long for lunch.

We started with guacamole ($5), in this instance a hefty pile of diced onion, tomato and jicama mixed with mashed avocado, ringed with corn tortilla chips and set atop a bed off shredded cabbage.

The chips appeared to be housemade and were very crunchy, with just a touch of salt. More vegetable salad than traditional guacamole, the dish was surprisingly bland—no heat, no salt, just fresh veg.

We seasoned it to taste and moved on with the meal.

My friend ordered a pair of tacos, one shrimp and one fish ($3 each). They were considerably larger than street tacos, featuring warm corn tortillas stuffed with plenty of well-cooked seafood, cabbage, tomato, onion, cilantro, “house special sauce” and lime wedges on the side. The sauce was reminiscent of a remoulade in both consistency and flavor.

I decided to try the captain’s fresh seafood mix from the appetizer list ($14.99 small order). I was glad I went with the small plate, which wasn’t very small at all. An artfully presented layering of fish, shrimp, octopus, scallop, oyster, cucumber and onion was served ceviche style, soaked in lime juice and a mix of the same spices used in the special sauce. Topped with sliced avocado and surrounded by sliced tomato and lime wedges, it was

easily a meal by itself. The fish tasted exceptionally fresh, and I really enjoyed it. The one possible flaw was that the fin fish had soaked a bit too long and become mushy, but everything else was just as it should be.

We then chose to share a sampler platter ($19.99) of deep-fried items, including two cheese and shrimp empanadas, four coconut shrimp, two fish filets and about eight calamari rings. The filets were actually pretty good, with flaky fish in a decently seasoned batter. They were fine just as-is and even better dipped in the special sauce. Unfortunately, the fish was the only thing on the platter we were able to enjoy. Everything else was overcooked to the point of being largely inedible.

The butterflied coconut shrimp was tough and chewy, and what flavor the shrimp might have had was lost amongst the oily, over-fried coating of coconut.

Speaking of chewy—we could have been served battered rubber bands instead of calamari rings and not known the difference. A sort of sweet and sour sauce was provided for dipping but didn’t do much to improve things.

Though considerably larger than expected, the empanadas were made with corn flour and—by the color and flavor—I’d say annatto seeds were a primary seasoning. Although these were the only items in our meal with any spicy heat, I really disliked the flavor of the thick breading. The melted cheese competed with shrimp that appeared to have been sauteed in butter, resulting in an oily, greasy, disagreeable mess. Based on our experience, I’d say they should stick with the fresh stuff and leave the frying to someone else. Ω

I had forgotten what a sizable beer selection Imperial had to offer, almost overwhelming to the average drinker 10 years ago, a beer smorgasbord before a selection like this was as common as it is now. Sixteen taps pour a decent variety of beers—locals, well-known crafts and macro lagers, in a cross section of styles. Light, dark, hoppy and sour are all represented.

The bottle menu is more impressive still, equally varied and at least double in size. A full bar is also on display, but I didn’t get an actual drink menu to see how fancy the cocktails are or how wine drinkers would fare here.

As selection goes, the notable thing here is food. Along with some expected choices, Imperial features an admirable menu of pizzas, burgers and other plates, all crafted to be a decent step above typical “bar food.” A family with stroller came in for dinner while I sipped my pilsner, a sign to me that Imperial does a good job of balancing the roles of bar and restaurant.

I actually enjoyed the relative quiet to unwind a bit in this sometimes-raucous place. The few TVs are discreet but there if you care, music present but not obnoxious. Once the group and pizza guy left, though, it was just me and stroller family, almost awkward in this large vacant space.

Fortunately I had cash so didn’t need to fret again about the $10 minimum to use a card—an unwelcome trend I’m starting to see in bars. The parking lot—at a downtown bar!—called to me more than the pool tables, and family dinner awaited at home. Ω

BEST OF NORTHERN NEVADA 2017

The old cliché of “going to get a beer after work” doesn’t often ring true for me.

As a working parent married to another working parent, after-work time is almost always some combination of picking up kids, sports, dinner, homework and other things that aren’t beer. Exceptions occasionally arise as one did on a recent Sunday, so I took the opportunity for an after-shift beer at a watering hole I’ve neglected. As it turns out, Imperial Bar and Lounge is celebrating a landmark this year, having been open for 10 years. I’d call that a win, having weathered the great recession during their first few years of operation.

My lasting impression from the Imperial of years ago is not of drink, but food. I have a fond memory of enjoying thin, salty French fries, and little else. I haven’t consciously stayed away for any reason other than a general decline in my “going out” habits, but I’ll admit to some bias—the occasional late night line I’ve seen outside complete with velvet ropes, coupled with a reputation for a young, college pickup crowd, and it hasn’t been the first place I’d consider for a drink in recent years.

Trying to forget these preconceptions, I walk into an almost-empty bar, just one lone soul at the bar eating pizza and a group sharing drinks around a cluster of tables.

Imperial is big, as bars go—like theatre in the round, a large central bar with stools on all sides, tables and booths surrounding it, and maybe the coolest feature, a large vinyl couch/bench/lounging area sprawling along the large windows spanning Arlington Avenue. Those windows were wisely kept closed on this insufferably hot day, but during cooler times of year, they make a fun viewing space onto the urban landscape. The historic brick architecture with open rafters and modern steel design creates

Labor of love Kathleen Smith Kathleen Smith grew up in Reno, writing poetry and singing in choir. At age 19, while studying theater at the University of Southern California, a friend suggested that she put one of her poems to music.

She did, and that sent her down a whole new path toward a career as a singer-songwriter.

“It was just this moment of ‘Oh my gosh, this is my thing,’” she said in a recent interview. “I found my thing and just started trying to be a musician, even though I had no idea what that meant.”

Smith stayed in Los Angeles for a few more years, had a day job in MTV’s legal and licensing department, and lived in New York for a while. She made some EPs, appeared on the Jimmy Lloyd Songwriter Workshop on NBC and played at the Living Room, an acoustic venue in Manhattan that was once Norah Jones’ launchpad.

She wanted to dedicate even more time to writing songs and making a fulllength album.

“I decided I owed myself a chance to make music 100 percent of the time,” Smith said. “I had been marinating in this record I wanted to write, Love Superstar.”

Inspired by Bon Iver, whose debut album was made in solitude in a cabin in Wisconsin, Smith and her husband moved to a remote spot in New Mexico’s Sandia Mountains. In a barn with a wood stove, she wrote songs and beefed up her sound-engineering skills. In 2014, she recorded Love Superstar, a full-length album of jaunty, upbeat tunes with titles 20 | RN&R | 07.06.17

like “Giddy” and “Believe,” lots of warm acoustic guitar and piano, and a voice made of sunshine.

Smith said that love plays a big role in her life and her work, and not just romantic love.

“Love Superstar really is all about love and following your dreams and following your heart,” she said. “I bow down at the altar of love. And I don’t mean little-L, like the Hallmark stuff, I mean in the core of my being, the way I’m wired as a person and an artist, I believe all of this is love, in different forms, that love is so much bigger than maybe we have been raised or shown to realize. … That we can tap into love is one of the most magical things in the universe.”

To that effect, Smith said the connection and sense of community she finds with her audiences is a critical part of her performances.

“Overall, I love playing rooms that are listening rooms,” she said. “I love getting to really be in a space with the audience, where the space is set so people can connect on a heart level.” She especially likes playing house concerts because, she said, “I love chatting with people. I love getting to know people, having some snacks and bubbly water for like an hour, then we play a set. Then we hang out some more.”

At the moment, Smith is planning to move to a bigger pond, Santa Fe, and she’s working on a new album that has a title—Medicine—but not a release date.

First though, she’ll finish up a threeweek tour with two Nevada dates, both, of course, in intimate, friendly venues. Ω

The Nevada Museum of Art holds its annual summer party and Artown event offering free admission to the museum, live performances, food and craft vendors and hands-on art projects. Art exhibitions include Miradas: Ancient Roots in Modern and Contemporary Mexican Art and City of Dust: The Evolution of Burning Man. There will be food trucks, including Kenji’s, Lazy Sundae Ice Cream Truck, St. Lawrence Pizza and Tacos el Chino, as well as performances by Ritmo Ardiente, Danza De Matlachines Guadalupana and a DJ set by Amplified Entertainment. Artist Peter Hazel will show his maquette of the large-scale Burning Man sculpture “Bloom” and talk about his project for Burning Man this year. MusEuMs NATIONAL AUTOMOBILE MUSEUM: Be the Astronaut. This exhibition immerses visitors in the science and engineering of spaceflight through state-of-the-art video game technology, simulators and actual NASA reconnaissance data. Using astronaut ID swipe cards, participants launch in space capsules like the USS Roddenberry and drive on the Moon or Mars. The exhibit includes the Mars rover Opportunity mockup from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, space suit replicas, and space memorabilia from American pop culture, connecting NASA with Star Trek, Star Wars and Snoopy.

My girlfriend and I broke up recently, so I’m back in the dating pool. Do you think online dating is a good way to meet people? If so, which are the best dating sites?

Context matters—which isn’t what they tell you in Datingsiteville. Save for specialty sites—like those for farmers, the disabled and people who relish a good flogging—the advertising for these venues tends to be context-free: “Hey, everybody in the entire galaxy, get your lasting love here!”

Annoyingly, though most of us have a sense of what context is, nobody’s done a very good job of defining it—either in the dictionary or in Researchville, where I found a herd of dueling definitions, all so unhelpfully worded that they seem to be in secret code. So here’s my definition: Context is a combo platter of the particular situation at hand, plus the details relevant to it that affect how you understand or experience the situation.

In the context of online dating, the relevant details include age, sex, the quality of the competition and one’s desired situation, as in: Do you just want casual sex, or are you holding out for something a little more, uh, black tie?

There are sex differences in when people are at their most appealing, because men and women tend to be at their highest “mate value” at different ages. This comes out of how male sexuality evolved to be visually driven because the features men find beautiful—youth being the biggie—are associated with fertility. Women, however, evolved to go for “providers”—men with high status and earning power.

So, online dating tends to be more fruitful if you’re a hot 23-year-old female espresso jockey or a 43-yearold male VP of a successful startup, but it can have some challenges for the 43-year-old female startup star or the 23-year-old dude who’s the senior vice barista.

So the question is not whether dating sites work but whether the qualities you have and the situation you’re seeking add up to more than a few tumbleweeds blowing around in your inbox. Because online dating success is shaped more by personal context (and plain old luck) than by the particular site you’re on, you might experiment with two or three. If things go poorly, use

online dating as a supplement to meeting women the retro way, like at cocktail parties, where you won’t be competing with the 362 more genetically blessed males within a 35-mile radius. This vastly increases your chances of dazzling the ladies with your personality—distracting them from how Mother Nature zoned out when she was handing out necks to your family.

Man on the flake This guy asked me out and suggested we meet up after his dentist appointment. He said he’d call around 2 p.m. Well, at 9:30 p.m., I got a “Hey” text from him and didn’t respond. A friend said I shouldn’t write him off so fast. Am I being too harsh?

No, you can’t always judge someone by a single thing they do, but this guy’s one-word text—seven hours after he said he’d call—speaks volumes: “Holy moly, wouldya look at the time. It’s 9:30, and I could use some sex.”

How a person behaves is driven by their personality traits, which social psychologist Brent Roberts describes as habitual patterns of thoughts, feelings and behavior that are relatively consistent across time and situations. Granted, there are occasions when impulse gets the best of us, and we’ll say something like, “That wasn’t really me.” But, at least in some way, it really was, because even impulsivity is part of personality.

A person can resolve to act more conscientiously, but personality has a strong genetic basis, so they’re unlikely to be as motivated to be conscientious as someone whose genes make them feel icky when they aren’t. In other words, you were probably wise in nixing this guy, who couldn’t even be bothered to fake respect for your feelings by supplementing that “Hey” with “Carjacked!” “Carried off by a raptor!” or “Still high on anesthesia in my blanket fort, having a tea party with G.I. Joe and my dog, Steve.” Ω

So very often, 10 year projections of any kind are not much more than space filler, completely disconnected from reality.

What happens, for example, when we get fusion reactors in 2022? Or

if the Space People land in Yankee Stadium in 2019? Or if Antarctica melts in 2024 and releases Godzilla to wreak havoc upon the planet?

No, the real figure to remember in the current health care discussion is 15 million, which is the estimated number of Americans who will lose their insurance next year should the Republican Death Act get passed. That’s the number that’s disturbing. That’s the ugly, looming shocker.

Trump was talking about space during a signing ceremony on June 30th to re-establish the National Space Council. Predictably, the quotes were worthy of a double take. “At some point in the future, we’re going to look back and say, How did we do it without space?”

Then, he looks at Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin and says, “There’s a lot of room out there, right?” Aldrin plays along, quotes Toy Story.

“To infinity and beyond.” Dum Dum doesn’t catch the reference, but rambles on anyway. “This is infinity here. It could be infinity. We don’t really know. But it could be. It has to be something. But it could be infinity. Right?”
