Nose it all Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

If you were to ask my nose—and why wouldn’t you?—it would tell you there are three seasons in Northern Nevada: Cold, Allergy and Fire.

Cold season begins in October and runs til mid-March. For my nose, it’s characterized by constant besiegement by viral invaders.

My nose, tough little bugger that he is, retaliates by cranking up overtime production of mucous, attempting to drown those viruses, and then wash them out in a slow-moving flash flood, like Hercules cleaning the Augean stables.

Allergy season begins in March and runs through June. During this time, my nose is aggressively pursued by plant gametes hoping to get seriously freaky with my facial orifices. This is not my nose’s favorite season. The catcalls are horrendous and gross. The pollen is like Pepé Le Pew, and my nose is like a cat that walked too close to wet paint. My nose retaliates by backfiring like a car.

And that brings us to now, the Northern Nevada season of fire.

This season begins in early July and continues until cold season starts back up in October. For my nose, this season is characterized by a nagging, tingling sense of imminent danger. Something is wrong with this air, my nose observes. He smells the proverbial smoke.

There have already been a few wildfires around the area—including the fire near Farad that burns as I write this. And without a doubt, there will be more. The smoke will irritate our noses, our eyes, our cats and our dogs. Plants and wild animals will die in flames. Homes and people will be, at the very least, threatened.

And you might think, “Oh, we had the wettest winter in decades! Fire season is sure to be mild this year with all that moisture.” But nope, the wet winter made for a green spring, and a green spring makes for an extra abundance of plant life to die, dry up, and be ready to burn quickly and terrifyingly.

Be careful. Watch where you toss your matches, cigarette butts and roaches. Brush up on your Smokey the Bear.

Totaling the bill I am strongly opposed to the Republican health care bill. It is nothing more than a tax break for the wealthy while killing off thousands of poor and elderly people.

Those of us with pre-existing conditions don’t have a prayer. Under what I call Trumpdoesn’tcare, I will be dead within six to 12 months, depending on how long I can go without meds and a physician’s care.

The premium I pay now is about $250.00 a month. Any more and I would not have any insurance. Medicare takes over a hundred and part “D” almost $50. All this out of about $700 a month in Social Security.

As a Carson City resident and constituent, Senator Heller, I ask you to please vote no on this horrible bill.

How will it be used?

Re “Cegavske threatens privacy” (editorial, July 6): Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske should have more information before sending our voter information to D.C. How will the data be used to determine who did or who didn’t vote illegally? What will the commission do with the data? Compare names given by secretaries of state to a list of known undocumented people? Then what?

I’m sure they’ll find a number of Jesus and Mohammad legally registered citizens eligible to vote with similar names of the undocumented. What then? How will the commission determine if it was the legally registered who voted or undocumented using the same name? I didn’t see any cameras at my voting place. Even “Donald Trump” has been recorded as voting at least twice. But he’ll claim he voted once and Donald, Jr., voted the second time. Where’s his proof?

Maybe he has proof for this past election but what proof for previous elections?

Instead of taking the information to D.C., Trump should fund the secretaries of state to do investigation in their own states and report back to the commission. This way the information does not leave the state, which is currently secure, nor will the information be subject to a political witch hunt and manipulated by political hacks to prove their boss is correct. I tend to trust our Washoe Register of Voters office over a politically motivated/ appointed commission tasked with an agenda.

Debating infanticide Re “One Christian’s response” (letters, July 6): In response to Katriel J. Van Cleve’s defense of her Creator killing many thousands of Egyptian firstborn male children, she asserts, “God was grieved to take children, but we all must admit it was just,” I vehemently disagree and make no admission that it was “just.” There is no offense so great that just and fitting punishment for the offender is to kill their living, breathing child. That’s immoral, as nearly any atheist will tell you.

The notion that everyone who felt the misery of losing one of those precious children deserved to feel that misery is insane, but if that’s not true, it means that many innocent people were punished through their grief. Did all the children in every family across Egypt really deserve the misery and grief they felt when their brother died? Try telling a 6-year old girl that “we all must admit it was just” that the happy and healthy brother she adores was killed by God, because the Pharaoh she never met made a decision that she would never have made. Do you think that she would ever grow to love and worship the God who so cruelly hurt her as a child? The twin concepts of “group guilt” and “group punishment” hang like an albatross around the neck of modern-day Christianity, inherited from Old Testament

Killing children because of Pharaoh’s intransigent refusal to let the Israelites leave Egypt was arguably the pinnacle of cruelty, no matter how wrong Pharaoh’s decision, and absolutely nothing can justify it. Christians are often quick to point out the evil they see in the world, yet rarely recognize or acknowledge it when it stares out at them from the pages of their own Bibles. Maybe Bibles are more for thumping than for reading.

Running low If you suspected that the long lines of people waiting outside the marijuana dispensaries during the first couple of weeks of legalization meant that Nevada dispensaries might be in danger of running of out of product, then you were right.

According to the Nevada Dispensary Association, Nevada dispensaries brought in about $3 million in sales revenue and $500,000 in tax revenue within the first four days of legal recreational sales.

This is great news, and something that cannabis advocates had been predicting would happen for years.

We told you so—people like marijuana. And those are numbers that would make even Jeff Sessions say, “Hey, maybe I should go into the cannabis business ...”

But the dispensaries are starting to run low on product—particularly edibles and other items that are tougher to find on the street. The problem isn’t at the dispensaries—or with the growers and manufacturers.

The problem is that there aren’t enough distributors to move the product from manufacturers to dispensaries.

Late last week, after less than a full week of legal cannabis sales, Gov. Brian Sandoval endorsed the Nevada Department of Taxation’s statement of emergency, allowing the Nevada Tax Commission, which oversees the department, to vote on a regulation that would make it easier to apply for distribution licenses.

That vote is scheduled for July 13, the day this issue hits the stands.

Currently, for a limited period, in accordance with the ballot initiative legalizing recreational cannabis

that was approved by state voters last November, marijuana distribution licenses are only given to businesses with pre-existing alcohol distribution licenses.

This limitation has already been contentious and the subject of a legal battle. When the Department of Taxation said that limiting the licenses to those with liquor licenses would be inadequate for the new industry’s needs, a group of alcohol distributors balked and sued. In late June, a district court judge in Carson City imposed an injunction that prohibits the department from making a sufficiency determination.

However, in light of the booming business at Nevada shops, the new emergency regulation, which has been endorsed by the governor, would allow others—shockingly, even folks who aren’t already liquor distributors—to apply for licenses.

We strongly urge the Nevada Tax Commission to approve this emergency regulation. Cannabis is already proving to be a beneficial—not to mention very enjoyable—source of income for the state. Some of the attempts to block the free flow of product have seemed like intentional efforts to sabotage the industry—either by conservatives who don’t approve of it or by purveyors of a rival intoxicant who think their businesses might suffer.

It’s ridiculous to claim that only alcohol distributors are qualified to distribute cannabis. It’s a bit like telling a professional baseball prospect that he’s supposed to already be a member of an NFL team. Ω

Renters and the arrival of industry “You’ve been Tesla’d” is a common refrain in Reno these days, especially for seniors or people with disabilities living on a fixed income. The phrase refers to the increasingly common practice of landlords raising the rent by a significant amount, hoping to force out tenants so cosmetic improvements can be made to the property accompanied by a larger rent increase for the new tenants. Extremely low vacancy rates mean renters either accept the soaring rents or take their chances in an extremely competitive marketplace.

Sometimes landlords don’t bother with incremental rent increases and proceed directly to no-cause evictions. They move everyone out at the same time, then upgrade their properties, knowing they can easily find new tenants at a much higher rate of return. It’s capitalism pure and simple, a classic case of supply and demand, but the economic equation doesn’t take into account those who are left behind, struggling to avoid becoming homeless.

As I read Matthew Desmond’s new book, Evicted, winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction, I kept thinking of Reno’s motel people, paying weekly or monthly rents to live in often substandard conditions because they simply can’t live anywhere else due to their limited income, criminal history or sheer poverty.

Desmond follows eight families through the housing travails of Milwaukee, providing heartbreaking insight into income, racial and gender inequality and the toll it takes upon children growing up in generational poverty.

The Reno City Council’s wellintentioned focus on blight is crushing this same population as developers are encouraged to tear down substandard motels where the lowest income people have been living for years, often in deplorable conditions.

Recent articles in the Reno Gazette-Journal depict shameful situations where people have been paying ridiculous amounts of money to live among bedbugs, cockroaches and rats, with backed-up plumbing and little

or no cooking or laundry facilities. No one should be living like this, but there is simply nowhere else for them to go.

Shelters are full, and more people are moving to the river because they can’t pay their rent. The Reno Housing Authority is having difficulty recruiting landlords willing to accept HUD housing vouchers that haven’t kept up with fair market rents.

Meanwhile, public housing tenants are loath to accept a job at minimum wage or slightly higher because they can’t afford to pay market-based rent. They’re better off keeping a roof over their head in subsidized housing and scraping their living expenses together one way or another, through visits to food banks, charities or, as Desmond describes in his book, individualized networks of slightly better-off family and friends.

This is not a sustainable community.

Gov. Sandoval, elected officials and economic development directors celebrate their clever tax breaks that have enticed Tesla, Apple and other rich corporations

to set up shop in Reno, and then lecture us about the need to create more affordable housing. Studies are planned and forums are held, but solutions are years away if they are ever enacted. The Tesla effect is already here and growing exponentially. Just ask your friends who are renters.

Gov. Sandoval’s veto of a minimum wage increase further exacerbates the problem. Do the math for yourself and see what percentage of a minimum wage salary must be spent to acquire a small apartment in a decent neighborhood. Seriously. Do it.

During the depression when rents skyrocketed, people took matters into their own hands, forming tenants’ unions and organizing rent strikes and large demonstrations when people were evicted. Desmond believes a more efficient universal housing voucher program is needed, open to anyone who is income-eligible, to avoid evictions which keep families in abject poverty.

One thing’s for certain. Without immediate action, it’s going to get much worse. Ω

Subjecting health to market forces The debates on health care and most public policy issues, both in Nevada and the nation, revolve around a few basic economic laws. If we accept the basic premise that production and consumption must follow the laws of supply and demand, two subsidiary laws follow.

The first is that in a free market economy, the consumer is king. That means that the ultimate decider of price and quantity is the consumer of the product. Consumer willingness to purchase a product or service determines its success or failure.

The second economic law is called Say’s Law, which, simply put, says that production creates demand. As in the movie Field of Dreams, “If you build it, they will come.” This law means that even though the consumer is courted and has the final say, economic production and innovation are primarily the functions of investors and entrepreneurs who constantly strive to improve our quality of life under the profit motive incentive.

When the government cries “market failure” and intervenes in the process of supply and demand, they almost always do so by restricting supply and stimulating demand. Government restricts health care supply with taxes, regulations, occupational licensing, zoning, certificates of need, expensive and slow approvals for new drugs and other trade restrictions. When you decrease or slow down the supply, you get higher prices.

You also simply do not have access to new innovation and products get caught up in endless red tape.

Even though the government has put up roadblocks to supply, when it intervenes in markets, it invariably stimulates demand as well. This is a double whammy to the production process. Less supply means demand leads to higher prices. Now, you also have more people enrolled and ready to demand services.

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the largest number of new enrollees was in expanded Medicare, a notorious

underpayer. This means the new demand does not pay market rates needed to stimulate production and increase the supply, but is paying below market government rates. With both the supply and the demand for health care distorted by counterproductive government interventions, the “death spiral” of the ACA began. Rural Nevada will not be covered by the ACA next year, as insurance companies have pulled out.

The current debate is centered on the large expansion of Medicaid in the states.

In the Supreme Court case National Federation of Independent Business v.

Sebelius, the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government cannot force this expansion on the states by threatening to withhold funding. The federal government then promised to subsidize the first years of the expansion. Nevada’s Gov. Sandoval was the first Republican governor to approve Medicaid expansion.

Thirty-one states accepted the federal offer, 19 did not.

The Republican health care bill would lower the Medicaid eligibility downward toward the actual poverty level. This approach turns on stimulating the health care supply through deregulation so that these new enrollees who are above the poverty line will be able to afford a deregulated plan, or through health savings accounts be able to afford services that will better meet their needs than Medicaid. Insurance, after all, is not health care, but only a means of payment.

Sen. Rand Paul and the congressional “Freedom Caucus” are opposed to the health care bills almost in their entirety as “Obamacare Lite.” Paul, a Kentucky Republican, wants to see the ACA repealed outright and then work on a supply side approach to health care from scratch. That would also bring the pre-ACA government interventions under review. Every time Congress fails to pass a comprehensive reform bill, this option becomes more viable. Ω

William moon 1932-2017 Former NAACP branch president William Moon has died after a career of civil rights leadership in Nevada.

Arriving in Nevada as a warehouse manager in 1969, a post he held for more than a decade, Moon later became a civil rights officer in state government and served in a similar capacity in the Federal Bureau of Land Management.

Moon also organized a Boy Scouts troop and was a member of the city’s Regional Planning Commission. He was NAACP branch president 1996-2001 and sat on the city Civil Service Commission.

Moon is the second local NAACP leader to die this year, following Eddie Scott.

A memorial service for Moon was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on King’s Row last weekend. Participants included Mormon Bishop Michael Hodes, Second Baptist (Sparks) Pastor emeritus William Webb, and First Baptist (Black Springs) Pastor Don Butler.

Air conditioning units installed on recently renovated structures like the Silver Club Hotel in Sparks and the Golden Phoenix Casino Hotel in Reno—both converted to apartments—will be given quite a workout in the years ahead, according to a new study, and will eat up some of Nevada’s economic growth.

middle earth gambling The estate of J.R.R. Tolkien and Warner Bros. have reached a settlement over the use of The Lord of the Rings characters in slot machines and other merchandising.

The terms of the settlement were not disclosed, but the lawsuit by the estate had claimed copyright infringement and breach of contract because of the use of Tolkien characters in ways that were allegedly not agreed on when the rights were transferred in 1969.

The very existence of Tolkien gambling devices, some of which are manufactured by Reno-based company International Game Technology, nearly escaped the estate’s notice. It was only a spam mailing that revealed the usage.

Warner countersued, claiming it was harmed by the filing of the suit, which said Tolkien fans had expressed “consternation at seeing The Lord of the Rings associated with the morally questionable—and decidedly nonliterary—world of online and casino gambling.”

Movie corporations have long been known for a deeply entrenched culture of corruption. “Well, Jack, I’ve got a notion you’re screwing me,” John Wayne is reported to have said to studio executive Jack Warner. “Duke, of course we are, but we’re your friends,” Warner replied.

Corruption by the studios is rarely prosecuted. The bestseller Indecent Exposure by David McClintick deals with $65,000 stolen by Columbia Pictures president David Begelman and the way the Columbia board of directors persecuted Begelman’s accusers.

brain burn Recently we ran a photo here in our news section of two workers replacing light bulbs in the Reno Arch and reported the workers were unable to tell us the total number of bulbs in the structure.

Nevada Regent Jason Geddes has supplied the answer: 2,076.

“I had to count them when I was at the City and we converted the arch to LED bulbs,” Geddes wrote in his message.

“The number is burned in my brain.”

Geddes, a biochemist and environmental health scientist, served as environmental services administrator for the City of Reno and now performs a similar function for the Washoe County School District.

Climate slowdown Damage to Nevada economy charted higher power bills.

More crime.

Declining productivity.

More deaths from heat.

Economic slowdown.

That’s what Nevadans have to look forward to unless they—and the rest of the country—change their ways, according to 12 scientists in a new study.

“Estimating economic damage from climate change in the United States” was published by the journal Science on June 30. In dense, essentially unintelligible (to the layperson) prose, the authors warn of the dangers of business-as-usual.

Because of the difficulty of deciphering the verbiage of the study, we contacted James Rising, a researcher at the Energy and Resources Group at University of California, Berkeley and one of the authors of the study, to narrow the focus to the Great Basin.

His prognosis for Nevada is grim.

“There is certainly a lot of uncertainty about the impacts in

that region, but we can give some general sense of what to expect,” he wrote in an email. “Across the state, unless there is strong action to curb emissions, there are going to be heatrelated deaths that are about on-par with current vehicle accident deaths (13 deaths per 100,000 [people] per year), and considerable increases in per-person energy expenditures (the equivalent of $250 per person for current wages). We also expect increases in violent crime and decreases in the productivity of workers. All told, these impacts will cost Nevada about 4 percent of its total income.”

We asked for a time frame.

“By mid-century, Nevada is expected to have warmed by about 3 [degrees Farenheit], irrespective of climate policy,” Rising wrote. “By then, labor productivity will be down about a half percent, and there will be about 5-10 deaths per 100,000 people per year. That’s going to be a loss of about 1 percent of Nevada’s GDP.

The rate of impacts increase in the second half of the century, about 3 times faster.”

He said there are things scholars cannot yet assess, such as the impact on ecosystems, changes in infectious diseases and water losses. But the authors of the study hope locals will use the information they are offering now to prepare.

The inability to chart the water future is of considerable concern in this desert state. There are areas of the United States where water is of little concern and residents don’t even worry about conservation.

Nevada is not one of them. Its water supply relies on snowmelt, and the life of the snowpack from one winter to the next sometimes barely makes it through the warm weather months.

How Nevada Helped destroy a family This article is excerpted from the book Out of the Neon Closet: Queer Community in the Silver State, now available at Sundance Books and other retailers.

Tim Daly and Nan Toews were married in 1969, and their daughter, Mary, was born four years later. When the couple divorced in 1981, Nan took custody of Mary while Tim, who had moved to Berkeley to work at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, kept visitation rights and paid both child support and alimony. Nan Daly and Mary lived in Reno.

Daly had long realized he was transgender and began attending support groups at the Pacific Center for Human Growth Awareness in Berkeley. In August 1981, while daughter Mary was visiting him in California, Tim, who had adopted the name Suzanne Lindley Daly, told her he was transgender and planning surgery and urged Mary not to tell her mother.

But Mary did tell her mother, and on May 12, 1982, Nan Daly filed a Petition for Order Terminating Parental Rights of Natural Father under Nevada Revised Statute 128.105. Nan did not want simply to end Suzanne’s visitation privileges but to sunder her legal identity as Mary’s natural parent. When Suzanne began living as a woman, legally changed her name, and underwent surgery, Nan Daly obtained a restraining order to keep her from contacting their daughter while the termination proceedings were underway.

Suzanne asked the Reno firm Bowen, Swafford and Hoffman, who had handled her divorce, to represent her in her parental rights case, but they refused when they found she was transgender. Suzanne instead hired Susan J. Haveson of Reno’s Hall and Haveson, as well as California attorneys Ellen LaCroix and Ann Casamajor, who was herself transgender.

Nan’s lawyer was Nada Novakovich, one of Nevada’s most honored attorneys and a prominent member of Reno society. The judge was John Gabrielli.

The hearings took several days, during which Suzanne Daly and her legal team presented a strong defense not only of her fitness as a parent, but of the nature of transgender people. Among their witnesses were Lynn Frazier, facilitator for the transgender group at the Pacific Center Suzanne had been attending; Andrea Canaan, executive director of the Pacific Center; and Dr. Ira Pauly, chairman of the Department of Behavioral Sciences at the University of Nevada School of Medicine.

Pauly’s supportive testimony was particularly important. Pauly, who often collaborated with Dr. Harry Benjamin, is one of the great pioneers in the identification and treatment of what then was called “gender dysphoria.” Pauly wrote the two most respected reports on genital

surgery—“Male Psychosexual Inversion: Transsexualism,” on male-to-female transition, and “Adult Manifestations of Female Transsexualism,” on female-to-male transition.

Pauly was among the physicians who created the program of treatment and transition that Suzanne Daly followed. What Pauly brought to her case was reason, compassion and semantic accuracy. He described the Real Life Test where those in transition are required to live full-time in the gender into which they are transitioning, and he detailed the psychophysiological background of gender dysphoria, explaining the difference between transsexuality and homosexuality, noting that transsexuality was a medical condition. While Pauly admitted there was almost nothing in the literature that dealt with an issue like Daly v. Daly, he said, “If the child has felt himself to be loved by this person I think he can accept the rather traumatic transformation, as long as he feels that he will continue to get love and support from his biological parent. ... The concern and caring of a parent isn’t totally tied up with the individual gender identity.”

Witnesses Frazier and Canaan described Suzanne’s love for Mary and Mary’s obvious love for Suzanne. By everyone’s account— including her own mother’s—Mary was mature beyond her nine years. In fact, it was Mary who explained to her mother calmly and lucidly the difference between a transvestite and a transgender person. Further, Mary had spent several happy weekends with Suzanne attending meetings at the Pacific Center after Suzanne told her of the impending surgery. Kitty Wright, a friend of Suzanne’s before and after the surgery, recalls that Mary accepted the facts “without question.”

Nan Daly and her lawyer, Nada Novakovich, however, turned the hearings into a seething circus of hatred, racism, AIDS panic, homophobic bigotry, and personal harassment of those involved in Suzanne’s defense.

Novakovich, a former Democratic U.S. House candidate, persistently referred to Suzanne Daly in the masculine, suggested sexual impropriety between her and Mary, and claimed that merely taking Mary to meetings at the Pacific Center constituted physical endangerment “because of a disease that is prevalent in this type of 12 | RN&R | 07.13.17

community.” Mary, Novakovich said, was “a gifted child with a brilliant future ahead of her.

Shall we keep her that way or shall we take a risk and put her in an environment of lesbians, gays, homosexuals, transsexuals, and perverts?”

Novakovich hammered the point that any therapy for Mary to help her understand and deal with Suzanne would be something dangerous and risky forced upon the child against her wishes merely to make Suzanne herself happy, and that in considering her own emotional well-being over Mary’s, Suzanne was an unfit parent. Helping Mary to understand the transition her father had made would be useless, Novakovich said, because Mary “is normal,” and that “Homosexuals and transsexuals and all the perverts are more accepted in San Francisco than they are in a small town like Reno.”

When cross-examining Andrea Canaan, Novakovich accused her of having an affair with Suzanne and tried to discredit and objectify Canaan because she was African-American, lesbian, and an unwed mother. When Suzanne’s lawyer Ann Casamajor pointed out that bigotry and racism—not Suzanne’s parental suitability—had become an issue in Daly v. Daly, Novakovich shouted, “I am not a bigot. … I love blacks. I have a black housekeeper.”

Nevertheless, Judge Gabrielli let Novakovich’s questions and accusations continue, though they wandered far from the case. Nan Daly was just as disrespectful and contemptuous of Suzanne, declaring, “I can’t accept that individual sitting there as my ex-husband. [C]an [Mary’s] father take her to Father’s Day at Girl Scouts? Can she say daddy to her father? Does she have to address him as mother? And, if so, what does that make me? ... I don’t move in circles where people are anything other than what they prove to be in their appearance.”

Mary Daly herself was never called to testify. Instead, at one point in the hearings, Judge Gabrielli ordered Mary brought into his chambers with attorneys Novakovich and Casamajor, the Court Clerk, and Court Reporter. This portion of the hearing was sealed, so there is no available record of what Mary said in that closed hearing, although Ann Casamajor, during closing arguments, accused

Novakovich of having coached, manipulated, and otherwise intimidated the child.

Arguments in Daly v. Daly closed on Feb. 24, 1983. On April 11, Judge Gabrielli issued his decision terminating Suzanne’s parental rights.

Gabrielli agreed with Novakovich that in trying to preserve her relationship with Mary, Suzanne was “a selfish person to his own needs, his own desires, his own wishes, and is not thinking in a realistic way about Mary.” Gabrielli issued his judgment and decree on May 2, and, on that day, Suzanne Lindley Daly ceased being the legal parent of her daughter, Mary.

Suzanne, however, won a hearing before the Nevada Supreme Court in 1985. Present at Suzanne’s appeal were her lawyer, Ann Casamajor, Nada Novakovich, and Justices Al Gunderson, John Mowbray, Charles Springer, Thomas Steffen, and Cliff Young.

Justices hostile to the case that the transgender Casamajor was trying to make referred to her with male pronouns unless corrected by the justices who were supportive of her and broadminded on the issue. The direction the hearing would take was clear in the first half hour, and which judges were supportive and which were not was plain from the outset. Justices Gunderson and Springer, for example, felt the Second Judicial Court erred in that the case Novakovich made spoke to matters of custody and visitation, not parental rights, and they tried steering Casamajor’s remarks in that direction to gain support from the other justices.

Justice Mowbray, however, was direct and tactless in expressing his distaste. “What’s Mary gonna call Tim?” Mowbray asked. “Daddy?

Mama the Second? I have five children, [and] it’s just very, very difficult for me to understand how a father could do that with a child.”

Justice Steffen, a Mormon bishop, agreed with Novakovich and had no problem sundering Suzanne’s parental rights.

Of the five justices, it was Charles Springer who seemed most sympathetic and understanding of transgender issues. “It isn’t only a choice, is it?” Springer said. “I can see where somebody medically might have to undergo this sort of operation. But does that necessarily mean that you’re ipso facto immoral or depraved?”

The Court took more than a year to decide what to do about Suzanne Daly. On March 6, 1986 the court issued its decision upholding Judge Gabrielli’s termination of Suzanne’s parental rights. It was a three-two majority: Justices Steffen, Mowbray, and Young agreed with Gabrielli; Springer and Gunderson dissented.

Steffan’s majority opinion emphasized testimony by an expert witness for Nan Daly that Mary could suffer “emotional or mental injury to the child if she were allowed to be in her father’s presence. In addition, the doctor testified that Mary would not be injured if she did not see her father again. The doctor also considered alternatives, such as consultation with psychologists and psychiatrists and testified there was no guarantee it would work and that there would be a serious risk of emotional injury. It is precisely this risk that the lower court was asked to eliminate. It must be remembered that in termination proceedings, the interests of the child are paramount,

and a child should not be forced to undergo psychological adjustments, especially in view of the risk involved, solely to avoid termination of a parent’s rights. Certainly a parent’s rights should be preserved if at all possible, but not at the expense of the child.”

But Springer’s and Gunderson’s dissenting opinion was remarkably supportive and direct in noting the bigotry that lay at the heart of Daly v. Daly: “The key issue underlying [Nan Daly’s] petition appears to be [Suzanne’s] transsexuality. ... In psychological distress, the father has consulted legitimate and respected medical authorities. The advice given by those medical authorities may offend the religious precepts of many. ... Still, I respectfully submit that a court of law should not stigmatize an emotionally distressed person for following the advice of highly trained and licensed physicians ... who possess the most exalted credentials their profession can bestow. Nor should a parent be stigmatized for attempting to forewarn a child concerning medical procedures the parent is about to undergo pursuant to such advice. ... As I assess the record, the fact that the appellant father has suffered emotional problems which are foreign to the experience of this court’s members, and has followed the possibly poor advice of eminent medical authorities in his attempt to relieve them, does not justify a total

and irrevocable severance of appellant’s formal legal tie to a child he obviously cares about and desires to help nurture. By holding that such a severance is justified in these facts, it seems to me, we are being unnecessarily and impermissibly punitive to the exercise of a medical option we personally find offensive, thereby depriving a child of a legal relationship which might well be to the child’s advantage in the future.”

Springer and Gunderson also turned some of the testimony by the same expert witness cited

by Steffan back on the majority, showing how that testimony had been equivocal.

Suzanne appealed the Nevada Supreme Court decision to the U. S. Supreme Court— which let stand the Nevada’s ruling. Suzanne also filed suit in federal court claiming her civil rights had been violated. This case kept Suzanne wandering through the wilderness of the U. S. legal system for more than five years.

She lost at every turn and in 1989 dropped all her claims. Suzanne had fought termination of her parental rights as far as she could, but in the end was left with nothing. She would never see Mary again, and in addition to losing her daughter, Suzanne was driven from her job at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory by her co-workers’ bigotry. Suzanne’s alcoholism and agoraphobia grew more acute and debilitating. While Suzanne was astute with her money during the 1990s and accumulated a

million-dollar fortune, she lived like a pauper alone with her dog in a tiny, squalid house on an Oakland, California, hillside where she died on Easter Sunday 2002.

Suzanne had had no contact with her daughter even after Mary had become an adult.

When Suzanne’s friend, Kitty Wright, spoke to Mary after Suzanne’s death, Mary admitted her mother had raised her to hate Suzanne, and that when Mary turned 18 and could legally reconnect with Suzanne, both of them were too afraid. Suzanne noted in her will that she had no children, leaving the bulk of her estate to the National Rifle Association. Mary’s mother, Nan, died in October 2001 in nearly the same circumstances as Suzanne six months later— “in squalor with a large dog, drunk,” Wright remembers. “She’d withdrawn from the world.”

Nan’s lawyer, Nada Novakovich, also came to a bitter end. She illegally borrowed more than $3 million from 62 people, including several of her own clients who were ruined when she failed to repay them. Novakovich also embezzled more than $11,000 from a children’s trust fund she’d set up for another of her clients.

She declared bankruptcy in 1987, and when her crimes were discovered she pleaded no contest to embezzlement, received a suspended

sentence and was disbarred. She died disgraced and alcoholic in 1998, her part in Daly v. Daly noted in her obituary.

But the saddest irony of Daly v. Daly is that the case for years afterward was consistently cited in legal literature as bad case law, and in 2000, 14 years after ending Suzanne Daly’s parental rights, the Nevada Supreme Court reversed its 1986 opinion, claiming that lower courts had based their decisions on a flawed interpretation of the termination statute. When the Nevada Legislature amended NRS 128.105 in 1995, Washoe Sen. Sue Wagner said that the purpose of the bill as amended was “to provide that parental rights and children’s rights [are] of equal importance ... and must be considered together.”

In its 2000 decision the court admitted that “The purpose of Nevada’s termination statute is not to punish parents.” Nine other dubious Nevada decisions were overturned at the same time as Daly v. Daly. It’s doubtful Suzanne Daly knew about the decision and impossible to know how she might have responded. “I don’t think she was [aware of it],” Kitty Wright says.

“She never mentioned it to me, and she would have. I think it would would’ve made her angry, that all of this was for nothing.” Ω

t’s been over 300 days since I left my home in the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu and moved here to study journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno. I have struggled with homesickness, and I now live by myself for the first time, which has been challenging. But the biggest struggle has been answering one question—what am I going to eat today?

My mother was wise to send me here with a lot of packed spices and food.

Although it took me a few burns and cuts to master the art of Indian cooking, the food that comes out of my kitchen in Reno is edible and, in fact, tasty. On occasion, I have run out of spices, but all it took was a trip to one of the Indian grocery stores in Sparks and Reno to pump up the supplies.

As I’ve cooked Indian food for myself and my Reno friends, I’ve learned that a lot of Americans find the spiciness of Indian main dishes and the sugar in Indian sweets both a bit much. Almost every Indian savory dish contains at least two teaspoons of chili powder—and some fresh green peppers, too.

So, I took a tour of some of Reno’s Indian restaurants, and although there are not a multitude of them here, there is some good food to indulge in.

Pirate trip Peter and the Starcatcher When my 8-year-old daughter plays with her dolls, I marvel at her imagination. I sometimes feel I’ve completely forgotten how to use mine. When she asks me to play with her, I struggle to invent even basic plots, while hers contain complex characters, unheard-of inventions, exotic locales and costumes made of paper napkins and hair ties. It’s a wondrous thing to behold.

The world of imagination created in Reno Little Theater’s Peter and the Starcatcher evokes the same sense of wonderment. Of all the delightful things about this show, this return to the land of childhood imagination is the delightfullest.

The play is written as story theater— actors play multiple roles and provide narration as they show you the story. It’s not unlike the way kids might spontaneously perform plays for their parents, one acting out what the other says to do, all made up on the spot. The stage is decked out in ropes, wooden planks and metal scaffolding, and your task is set in the prologue: “Use your thoughts to hoist the sails and deck the ships awaiting us.”

We are then transported to the 1800s and the origin story of the boy who would never grow up, Peter Pan (played by Hannah Gebensleben), and his nemesis, the “pirate with scads of panache,” the beguiling Black Stache, who eventually will become Captain Hook.

In this imaginative tale, before Peter Pan had a fairy friend, met a girl named Wendy or piloted a flying ship, he was a nameless orphan who was sold as cheap labor to the good ship Neverland.

Also aboard is Molly Aster (Hannah Davis), the plucky 14-year-old daughter of a wealthy lord who takes a shine to the orphan boy and shares her magical

secrets with him. Together, they encounter mermaids, a shipwreck, Black Stache (Chad Sweet) and a strange tribe of jungle dwellers.

At its heart, this is a story about Peter’s journey of discovery as he learns that what makes him different also makes him special. But it’s also about the extraordinary power of imagination. After all, with nothing but old-fashioned rope, toy wooden boats, creative costuming, some cleverly used kitchen utensils and the actors’ movements, we can convince ourselves that what the actors say is true.

It helps that the show is masterfully directed. The script absolutely depends on timing—one actor begins a line that another finishes. One actor narrates an action precisely as another performs it. The play’s rapid pacing in lesser hands would leave the actors tongue-tied, but, like a wellchoreographed dance, these actors never miss a step.

The actors are tremendous, and Chad Sweet’s Black Stache is a glorious thing to behold. A funnier, sillier character you aren’t likely to find, and his unique brands of egotism and idiocy are alone worth the price of admission.

Though it’s billed as family-friendly, it’s a two-hour show—long for very little ones—with a few adult-oriented gags and a sophisticated plot that young children may struggle with. My 8-year-old loved it, but it was also a bit of a reach for her.

Nonetheless, I assure you it’s just as Black Stache promises: “A little swash, a bit of buckle … you’ll love it more than bread.” Ω

Modern marvel Spidey took an unfortunate detour with Andrew Garfield, director Marc Webb and the underwhelming, dreary The Amazing Spider-Man films. (I’m still pissed about those cranes!) That GIF of Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker crying sloppily pretty much reflects my sentiment about the last couple of SpiderMan films.

Things get back on track in a fun way with SpiderMan: Homecoming, a complete overhaul of the Peter Parker character thanks to the effervescent casting of young actor Tom Holland. Holland is a fine actor and an impressive athlete. He does most of his own acrobatic stunts.

Of course, a Marvel movie needs a good villain, and Homecoming gets one in Vulture, played with snarling glee by Michael Keaton. Director Jon Watts and an admittedly ridiculous number of writers give Vulture an interesting origin.

He’s Adrian Toones, a construction salvage worker who had a city contract to clean up the mess in New York City after the events of The Avengers.

Some government types take over and kick him off the gig, leaving him pissed and with a bunch of hightech alien junk in his possession. Toones constructs some weapons, including an elaborate winged suit, with the alien technology and, voila, Vulture.

Parker is a younger incarnation this time out, dealing with typical high school traumas that seem a little trivial after the events of Captain America: Civil War, where he sort of saved the day. He’s gone from stealing Captain America’s shield to worrying about girls, and he’s just a little bored.

Enter Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) who has given Parker his Spidey suit with some conditions, like that he can only be a “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man,” concentrating on local problems rather than the really big, worldly ones. Those are jobs for the Avengers, and Spidey isn’t on that level just yet.

The film is basically one half kick-ass Marvel movie—Watts is no slouch with an action sequence—and one half enjoyable and frothy high school comedy that would make John Hughes

proud (including a soundtrack with everything from the Ramones to the English Beat). It achieves the difficult accomplishment of being a worthy Marvel Universe installment while being a great standalone adventure in its own right.

The presence of Mr. Reliable, Downey, Jr., holds everything together nicely and assures fans that this is very much another chapter in the continuing Avengers arc. He and Holland have great scenes together, and Iron Man makes more than one prominent appearance. Keaton holds up his part of the job with an expert’s efficiency, relishing a chance to be bad. Remember that moment in 1989’s Batman when he taunted the Joker (“Let’s get nuts!”)?

Marisa Tomei is the new Aunt May, and she’s a great Aunt May. There’s no J. Jonah Jameson this time around. Parker’s adventures as a news photographer will have to wait for the future. There’s too much going on in this one for that subplot to be included.

Hats off to producers for taking a risk with the relatively unknown Watts, whose other feature films include the horror film Clown and the very good Kevin Bacon thriller, Cop Car. Watts demonstrated that he could balance adolescent actors, humor and dread in an expert manner with Cop Car. What he didn’t demonstrate was his ability to coordinate massive special effects with a gargantuan budget.

Whatever handicap he had entering the production is surely conquered at this point. He’s a big movie director to be reckoned with.

There’s a moment in Spider-Man: Homecoming that involves some heavy lifting, one that displays the magical powers of the character alongside Holland’s amazing representation of Spidey. In that moment, the character is genuinely reborn. This isn’t your typical approach to a superhero origin story—it’s a let-her-rip, no-nonsense declaration that the right web-slinging incarnation has arrived, and he’s ready to party. Ω

This is a nice car chase movie antidote to The Fate of the Furious, a car chase movie that made me never want to see a car chase movie again, let alone Vin Diesel’s mushy mug. The soundtrack is one of the year’s best, and the guy in the title role is a major star in the making. Ansel Elgort plays Baby, who we see in the film’s opening sequence driving the getaway car for a robbery, a kinetic chase choreographed to the great Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s “Bellbottoms.” The scene snaps with a colorful energy that’s been missing from car chases of late. The best car chase movie of recent years, Drive, also featured a lonely driver and great vroom-vroom, but the soundtrack and look for that film were more meditative and hazy—not complaining; it worked beautifully. Baby Driver opts for a more clear-eyed, zippy approach, and it pays off. Edgar Wright writes and directs for this, a project he took up after his failed dalliance with Ant-Man. The chases go off with precision editing, filmed in a way that makes you feel like you are in the car.

And the soundtrack, featuring music ranging from Simon and Garfunkel to Hocus Pocus and Queen, perfectly complements them.

According to director Sofia Coppola, this is not a remake of the 1971 film of the same name starring Clint Eastwood; it’s a new adaptation of the novel both films are based on. Nicole Kidman stars as the leader of a southern school for girls, shut off from the rest of the world during the Civil War. While out searching for mushrooms, young Amy (Oona Laurence) finds a wounded Union soldier (Colin Farrell) and leads him back to the school. As the man heals, the young students and teachers each interact with the soldier, and things eventually get, well, complicated. Everybody in the movie delivers good work, especially Kidman as Miss Martha, a strict leader with risky compassion for the enemy soldier. Longtime Coppola collaborator Kirsten Dunst is on hand as a teacher who gets some extra attention from the stranger, and she’s strong in her role, as usual. Other cast members include Elle Fanning, Angourie Rice and Addison Riecke. The film eschews the usual Coppola soundtrack exuberance for something very quiet and slowly paced. As the film works up to a boil, leading to a shocking climax, Coppola creates a true sense of claustrophobia and high tension. This isn’t her best work, but it’s good work, with excellent cinematography and art direction.

The Cars franchise gets a nice little rebirth with Cars 3, a much, much better movie than Cars 2, and a slightly better movie than the first Cars. If you’re keeping score— and, really, you shouldn’t be, for there are far more pressing matters in your life—that still makes Cars 3 one of the more mediocre offerings from Pixar. Still, a mediocre Pixar film is better than most animated movies. Jettisoning the stupid spy movie bullshit—oops, I just cursed in a review for a G-rated movie … sorry, kids—that made the last installment convoluted and useless, the folks at Pixar choose to go an earthier, more emotional route with this one, and it works, for the most part. They also find a way to get the voice of the late Paul Newman into the mix, and hearing his beautiful growl again definitely warms the heart. Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is getting on in years, and he’s facing fierce competition from newer model cars like Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer), a strong, highly-trained vehicle that is beating McQueen on the racetrack. After a calamitous accident that renders his beautiful red sheen primer gray, McQueen is faced with either retirement or a new training regime comeback, Rocky III-style. The movie plays around with the notions of retirement and the rites of passage to the next generation, pretty heady stuff for a G-rated animated movie. Give the screenwriters credit for finally coming up with a story for Lightning McQueen that caters as much to adults as it does to kids.

The Hero

Okja

Lee, an aging movie star (Sam Elliot) gets some bad news from his doctor and tries to make good on some mistakes in the face of some big decisions. If that sounds like a done-to-death story for you, it kind of is, but director and co-screenwriter Brett Haley makes things intriguing, thanks to a great performance from Elliot and an excellent supporting cast. Elliot is basically playing himself, a western star known for his big voice and iconic moustache, and the part was tailor made for him. His Lee is sort of a jerk, but the kind of jerk you have to like. The way that moustache arches with his smile is magical. Nick Offerman is stellar as Lee’s drug dealer and best buddy, while Laura Prepon has never been better as “the love interest.” Yes, it’s a cliché role, but she takes it to great heights. Elliot’s real-life wife, the great Katharine Ross, even has a role as Lee’s ex-wife, which must’ve been a little awkward to pull off on set. The film looks great, especially during Lee’s dreams, which have him acting out a final movie in his head. In a summer of blockbusters and blockbuster wannabes, this stands as one of its fine sleepers.

Director Joon-ho Bong, purveyor of spectacularly wacky cinematic things (The Host, Snowpiercer) delivers, perhaps, his wackiest yet with this tale about a future world where meat is scarce, so huge pigs are biogenetically engineered for slaughter. The title character is a prized, giant animal raised in the mountains by Mija (Seo Hyun), a young girl who thinks Okja is her pet. She’s oblivious to the fact that Okja’s days are numbered, so when an envoy for a large corporation (Jake Gyllenhaal going nuts) shows up and takes Okja away, Mija flies into action, and the bizarre adventure begins. Paul Dano, one of the kings of movie weirdness, chips in as the leader of an animal rescue corps that includes Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) and Lily Collins. Following up her collaboration with Bong on Snowpiercer is Tilda Swinton, once again playing twins, as she did in Hail, Caesar!, two evil sisters running the corporation that produced Okja. The movie mixes absurd laughs with mayhem, and the cast is universally great. Like films such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Babe before it, this movie looks to shine a light on the cruel treatment of animals and perhaps get you to pass on the bacon the next time you are at Denny’s. It’s streaming on Netflix.

Transformers: The Last Knight

The latest Transformers movie, Transformers: The Last Knight, gets the dubious distinction of being the worst in the series. That is some sort of major accomplishment. It’s not the easiest thing in the world to look at this collective pile of movie manure and decipher which of the five is the worst. It’s like going to a frat house the first week of a semester at Dickhead University and trying to pick out the dumbest, drunkest douche in the place. All of the qualifiers are terribly, criminally lame. I’m giving the award of franchise worst because it’s just so clear how every participant in this enterprise, from director Michael Bay right on down to the production assistant who smeared glycerin on Mark Wahlberg’s pecs, is jaded, tired and played out.

Nobody really wants to be in this thing. The stink of “Who gives a shit … just pay me!” hits your nostrils with Wahlberg’s first line delivery.

The best part of this movie is when Anthony Hopkins inexplicably goes to Stonehenge to witness a robot battle then gets blown up, leading to the silliest death scene ever. Yep, I just issued a spoiler. Anthony Hopkins, who should be ashamed of himself for participating in this thing, dies hilariously in this movie. I hope this spoiler pisses you off so much that you don’t go to the movie. Be mad at me for the next 10 years, but I know I did you a favor.

Kauboi Izakaya, which means “cowboy gastropub” in Japanese, serves up a variety of small plates.

Cowboy up Open for about a year now, Kauboi Izakaya—essentially “cowboy gastropub” in Japanese—serves a variety of small plates intended to be shared among friends. The flavors are a fusion of traditional and modern. On our recent visit, the service was excellent, and—despite the hipster ambiance—the experience was welcoming and comfortable.

The menu is sectioned by size of plate and style of cooking: fresh, fried, skewered, ramen, etc. From the list of fresh menu items, we sampled bowls of salmon lomilomi with watermelon radish and crunchy quinoa ($12) and spicy soba noodles with cucumber, golden grape tomato, avocado and Thai basil ($8).

Lomi-lomi—meaning “to massage” in Hawaiian—generally refers to a dish that’s prepared entirely by hand. The fish and veg in this bowl had definitely seen a knife— appearing more like poke than lomi—but both were very fresh. Quinoa added texture, and notes of toasted sesame and furikake—a Japanese seasoning, usually made from dried fish, chopped seaweed, sugar and salt—made for a strong finish. A similar but bolder use of those seasonings packed the soba bowl with plenty of savor.

The actual noodles were cooked just fine.

The dish’s presentation was attractive, and the fresh herb and veggies worked well to balance a slightly aggressive sauce.

Of the very smallest plates offered, we shared seasonal Japanese pickle ($5) and rice tots with dragon sauce ($6). The rice tots had a nice crunchy exterior, with a risotto-esque inner core that worked well with the coating of spicy sauce. The fresh mix of pickled cabbage, cauliflower, bok choy, cucumber, cherry, ginger and Thai basil garnish in the Japanese pickle was an explosion of bright colors and

subtle, pleasant flavors. The perfect use of seasoned rice vinegar and gorgeous plating made this dish a stand out.

We also sampled Tokyo fried chicken ($10). Each morsel of tender, juicy, boneless fried chicken was more than a couple of bites, set atop a schmear of nicely spiced Japanese mayo. Tsukune yakitori—skewered chicken meatballs—($8) had a fair amount of char, mostly due to caramelization of the sweet, soy-based sauce.

Although I thought the flavor and texture were solid, everyone agreed that an order of beef tongue kushiyaki skewers seemed a bit small ($11). Served with a dusting of peppery, prickly ash and a squirt of lemon, the little squares of tender beef were gone too quick.

Kauai prawns ($15) were partially shelled with the tails and heads left on to add sweetness while frying. Lightly coated in tempura, the sweet shellfish went very well with a dusting of garlic and yuzukosho seasoning and were served with thin apple slices on the side.

Gyoza stuffed with kurobuta pork— Japanese for “black pig,” a variety of Berkshire pork—($8) were nicely browned.

It was well-seasoned and paired perfectly with thin apple slices and a daub of ginger applesauce—though it wouldn’t have hurt to have a little extra sauce on the plate.

We ended the meal with grilled “giant” squid ($14). Not to be confused with its truly colossal cousins, the mantle of the plate-sized squid was tender and delicious.

The tentacles were a bit chewy, but that happens you grill the whole thing at once. It was sprinkled with spicy togarashi powder, more of which was sprinkled atop a dipping Ω bowl of yuzu mayo.

By any other name Through the magic of technology, I’m watching rain fall from a hotel room in Janesville, Wisconsin, after flying to Chicago and three days of family reunion in Dubuque, Iowa. As is typical for me, I managed to cram in an embarrassment of beer shopping throughout and a visit to one small brewery. Not to paint an entire region of the country in overly broad strokes, but the Midwest—particularly its small, pastoral farm towns—isn’t exactly the hotbed of craft beer I enjoy and have grown accustomed to as back home. Busch Light appears to reign supreme in Corn Country.

As I considered what I wanted to write about this week, and thinking of the family activities approaching on my calendar, I settled on a family affair that I have postponed long enough. I looked up the new, expanded hours and paid a visit to Under the Rose Brewing Company.

Chatting with Jesse Kleinedler, who co-owns Under the Rose with her husband, brewmaster Scott Emond, I was a little startled that it will soon be four years since operations began. In that relatively short time, they’ve created a varied lineup of beers. The flagship nevadabeer—the brewery styles their beers with all lower case names—pale ale and saisonbeer are bottled, and the brewery offers a regular rotation of seasonal and specialty beers—from wine-barrel aged sours and pumpkin beers to bourbon barrel variations.

Turning conventional brewery wisdom on its head, the brewery didn’t offer any sort of IPA until well over two years into operation, finally conceding to the hoppy, market-dominating style last summer. Even then, their indiapaleale and stronger double

indiapaleale counter the popular West coast hop bomb style, falling more in line with balanced British varieties.

I was also pleasantly surprised to hear of the owners’ fortunate challenge—demand for their beers outpaces their ability to supply it using their current manual bottling process. That being the case, about half the beer is sold over the counter in their taproom, a hot—seasonally, anyway— rough-around-the-edges warehouse I’d describe as “urban rustic.” A homemade plywood bar separates the brewery from the customers’ play area—giant Jenga, indoor bocce, ping pong, and foosball are all available.

With the challenges of meeting demand, something had to give. A long-awaited move to automated bottling equipment is on the horizon, and they just took delivery of new, 600-gallon fermentation tanks, which will expand brewing capacity significantly.

A new taproom in midtown will open this fall, complete with its own half-size brewing system to turn out seasonals, specialty and experimental batches.

After the departure of a founding partner, Kleinedler and Emond remain as sole owners. They’ve expanded their real family with a son, and you’ll almost always find at least one of them hard at work. The extended “family” includes head brewer Patty Cronin, a colleague from Emond’s work at BJ’s Brewhouse. More hours and a new location means more staff, so the Under the Rose family continues to grow.

Meanwhile, these poor folks in the nation’s breadbasket keep drinking Busch Light and thinking that’s what good beer tastes like. Ω

Hard as rock Reptile Roots League Eight months ago, Reptile Roots League went from a trio to a duo after their drummer decided to call it quits. Far from closing up shop, however, vocalist and guitar player Lanny Carey and bassist Jesse Henderson have two upcoming show dates and are set to complete their debut album later this month.

“Originally the idea was for it to be an acoustic album, kind of folky, and once I started playing with a drummer, it was more of a heavy alternative feel,” Carey said. “That’s something from my past that I revisited, and I felt those songs were too good to not record.”

Currently backed by a meticulously crafted list of drum tracks played through the band’s PA, Reptile Roots League blends elements like early 2000s alternative and rock rhythms with crunchy distortion and bass breakdowns a la classic heavy metal.

The band’s punk influences are apparent on tracks like “Sifter” and “TAD,” incorporating steady eighth-note riffs and high-shrieking vocals in the vein of Billy Talent or the Offspring.

“I’m kind of thrown off by genres because … you’re not heavy enough to be metal, you’re not punk enough to be punk,” Carey said. “That’s why I say, generically, we play rock music—heavy rock to be honest.”

Carey moved to Reno about five years ago for his job and was initially unimpressed by the kinds of acts he saw in town.

It wasn’t until seeing local bands more recently, like Muderock and Metalbilly Trucker—whom RRL opened for earlier this year—that he said he became more inspired by the local scene. In forming

RRL, he met Henderson, who had just moved back to town.

“Me and Lanny started playing together about a year and a half ago,” Henderson said. “I answered a Craigslist ad to join a two-piece.”

After losing their drummer, the band decided to regroup and turn its attention to the studio, recording and mastering their first album with the help of local producers, guest artists and Carey’s own in-house studio.

“We actually recorded with Rick Spagnola at Dogwater Studios,” Carey said.

“We recorded all the guitars there, and for the past month I’ve been working on the vocals because I have a little studio. That way I can do it on my own when I feel like I can get the best vocals.”

Carey’s self-admitted perfectionism lends itself to a studio environment, he said.

He and Henderson can tweak the details of their sound in a way that is difficult in a live performance.

“I can never understand how a band could put out a shitty album, or an album where the vocals aren’t in key, because you can keep doing it until it’s right,” Carey said. “I want to make sure that this is a representation of us that people are going to hear. I want them to get the best album that they can get that represents us.”

While Carey and Henderson expressed an interest in finding a new drummer, they’re waiting for the right fit. Because more than putting out albums or completing their lineup, the driving force behind Reptile Roots League is its members’ appreciation of music in all forms.

“We geek out on music,” Carey said.

“We talk about music for hours.”

“We’ve got our feet in different genres, [but] we’ve got our ears in quite a few—we listen to everything,” Henderson said. Ω

The exhibition immerses visitors in the science and engineering of spaceflight via state-of-the-art video game technology, simulators and actual NASA reconnaissance data. Using astronaut ID swipe cards, participants launch in space capsules like the USS Roddenberry and drive on the Moon or Mars. TERRY LEE WELLS NEVADA DISCOVERY MUSEUM (THE DISCOVERY): A T. rex Named Sue. At 42 feet long and 12 feet high at the hips, Sue is the largest, most complete and best-preserved T. rex ever discovered. This acoustic trio from Seattle, Washington draws upon the deep well of American roots music to create their original songwriting and arrangement. The band formed in 2016, when Forrest Marowitz (upright bass), Daniel Ullom (mandolin) and James Horbett (guitar) began swapping tunes in a community kitchen. They have been performing regularly together ever since and have shared the stage with notable acts such as Elephant Revival, Billy Strings, Head for the Hills and Rushaad Eggleston. The truth about stats and dog I’m a woman looking for a new boyfriend and considering various online dating sites. Some have long questionnaires, and they factor your answers into an “algorithm” to match you with the best possible partner. Are these sites significantly better than the others?

According to a massive online dating analysis by social psychologist Eli Finkel and his colleagues, this algorithm stuff mainly seems to be a “science!”-flavored marketing ploy. The researchers explain that it’s “virtually impossible” for sites to do what they promise with these algorithms: “match people who are uniquely suited to one another” and who are likely to have a “satisfying and lasting long-term relationship” together.

As the Finkel team notes about the “uniquely suited” business: The evidence suggests that these algorithms are really no better at rooting out compatible partners than the matching most people already do themselves with sites’ search parameters—culling the herd of breathing, profile-posting humans down to, say, fellow Ph.Ds who are also weekend Satan worshippers.

Even more outrageous is the sites’ claim that this mathematical alchemy can identify two people who can have a lasting, happy relationship together who have yet to even meet. The researchers point out that the algorithms only measure the “individual characteristics of partners” (personality, attitudes, values, background). They note that this is just one of three essential variables that determine whether relationships sink or swim.

The other two are elements that can’t really be sussed out before two people are in a relationship. One is the “circumstances surrounding (a) couple”—like how they fit into each other’s family and whether one loses his or her job or goes through other major stressors.

The other factor is the “interactions between the partners”—how partners communicate, solve problems and support each other.

I would add an essential fourth factor that needs to be assessed face to face—physical attraction.

There’s also the “garbage in, garbage out” problem (statisticians’

shorthand for how poor-quality input leads to poor-quality output).

It’s unlikely that people are any more honest and accurate in filling out these questionnaires than they are in their online dating profiles.

Typically, deception in online dating profiles is intentional.

Sometimes—as research on personality finds—we can’t quite see ourselves as we really are. For example, take an item on one of these sites’ compatibility surveys: “I try to accommodate the other person’s position.”

There are seven little circles on a scale to blacken in, from “not at all” to “very well.” Well, OK, but do control freaks always understand that they’re control freaks? Sometimes somebody seriously controlling might fill in “very well” on “I try to accommodate…” simply because they see themselves in the best light—instead of the actual light.

Probably the best that can be said about these personality questionnaires is that they might lead you into a little helpful introspection. But, otherwise, these tests seem as pointless as they are grueling.

This isn’t to knock online dating itself, which offers really rapid, easy access to a lot of potential partners whom you’d probably never meet otherwise. However, it helps to have a smart strategy vis-à-vis the potential pitfalls, and that’s meeting any person you think might be a possibility ASAP. Meeting pronto gives you the best shot at seeing whether you click, as well as spotting any vast differences between profile and reality. As I always advise about first dates, keep it cheap, short and local.

Less investment means less disappointment if you find out a guy’s lying—or, maybe worse, if he’s being honest: He really is looking for his “partner in crime”—because one of the guys on his robbery crew got arrested last week. Ω

Well, we are having an open house here on Aug. 2, for the community.

And we’re having two other open houses—one for Saint Mary’s and one for Renown. We’re serving barbecue stuff and giving tours to the community, in the house. … And we have a gala coming up, which is our Red Shoe Gala—in October. That will have a 30th anniversary theme. … We just recently had a huge event at Toll Brothers, south of town. We took nine of their model homes and put a chef in each home and invited people. And we had about 700 people show up. We had Jaguar and Land Rover cars all over the place. So, you know, we have a

But then, Junior put his balls in a vise, and, well, maybe next week for rivers/lakes.

You just gotta figure, though, that Old Man Twitler has about had it up to here with his sons shootin’ off their big yaps about various Russiananigans. I mean, first, golf writer James Dodson remembered Eric in 2014 boasting about how it was Russian dough that was financing Trump golf course projects, and then move over Rover and let Junior take over as he chimes in with this new tale about the lady lawyer from Moscow where he, Manafort and Jared are all lick-

ing their chops for some yummy Hillary slime, and you can just imagine Dum Dum by now sitting in the Oval Office and slapping his forehead and yelling about how it’d be nice if, at the very least, his own immediate fucking family wasn’t leaking juicy shit to the goddamn New York Times, and Ivanka is right there texting at her brothers and husband that the time for heads to pop out of rear ends is pretty much right this very goddamn second.

Doggone it, these people are just so forgetful! You got Sessions going, “Oh yeah, I forgot that meeting with that big Russian dude.” You got Jared going, “Oh yeah, I forgot that first meeting with that big Russian dude, and, oh, nuts, I forgot that other one and dadgummit you’re right, there was that banker guy, that one just musta slipped my mind.” You’ve got Flynn

going, “Oh, you mean all those meetings?” plus his classic, “Oh, for god’s sake, can you believe that? I forgot I was working for Turkey! Silly me!” All these guys, covering shit up, always hiding something, never “remembering” any meetings involving Russians UNTIL THEY READ ABOUT THEM IN THE NEW YORK TIMES AND THE WASHINGTON POST. Then, it’s “Oh yeah. I remember now! Sorry! But really, nothing to see here! Fake news, fake news, lie, lie, spit up!”

You’ve got world leaders at the G20, not just worried about Trump’s alarming incompetence and cloddish boobitude, but also about his basic sanity, which is, you know, kinda heavy.
