I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again—our contest is the region’s largest, most comprehensive, most accurate and longestrunning reader survey. Many local businesses display their winning plaques. Accept no substitutions, and don’t miss out by not voting.

The contest ends the morning of July 27, so the week that this issue is on the stands will be the final week of voting. In other words, vote now or forever hold your peace. (Well, at least ’til next year.)

Also, big thanks to everyone who’s been coming out to our Rollin’ on the River concerts every Friday evening this month down at Wingfield Park. We’ve had great crowds, full of beautiful, beerdrinking faces, and it’s been great to see.

Big thanks as well to the folks who’ve stayed up late to catch more of the best local music at our Still Rollin’ concert series over Shea’s Tavern, 715 S. Virginia St. Those concerts have been a blast as well.

This Friday, July 21, we’ve got a fun lineup: The Sextones and Rigorous Proof at the park starting at 5:30 p.m., and then The Juvinals, Viva Revenge, Okay Urge and Hate Recorder at Shea’s starting at 9.

Domestic Vietnam In these perilous times it is difficult to try to distinguish which one thing out to “get” us would be number one on the list. Would it be health care, threat of war, collapsing economy, foreclosure of your home? Which would be at the top of your list?

Obviously, there are many more threats we all face daily, but there is one not mentioned here which affects each and every one of us—the drug war. Over a period of many decades I have written about it, talked about it, and warned of all the negative consequences of the failed policy of this idiotic effort the government labeled a war. If I were simply a lone voice in the wilderness, believe me, I would have given up long ago.

But the many voices, belonging to some of the most intelligent and interesting people, all have voiced similar concerns.

One whom I’ve admired, and also at times disagreed with, was the late William F. Buckley, Jr. He told us about countless numbers of sources that have produced evidence of the blatant attempt at vilifying this “devil weed with roots in hell.” This insanity has been going on since the 1930s.

Buckley had this to say: “Even if one takes every reefer madness allegation of the prohibitionists at face value, marijuana prohibition has done more harm to far more people than marijuana ever could.”

We’ve known all along that marijuana is not a deadly drug (schedule one, indeed), but rather, a green plant that has a long, distinguished history of service to mankind. And to go the step further, the incredible usefulness of the hemp plant has yet to reach its zenith.

I wish I could say that great strides have been taken by the many states that have legalized medical marijuana, while some have even legalized the sale and possession to adults over 21. Thanks to our national Constitution’s 10th amendment (state rights).

But the absurdity of the feds to continue a costly and ineffective drug war is a slap in

Calling Indian mothers Re “Naan stop search” (Arts & Culture, July 13): Indian food is my favorite. Thanks for the good suggestions. Thali sounds perfect. I had not heard of it. I’ve tried to learn to cook Indian, and while I’ve come a long way, I can never come close to what I get at, say, India Kabab. Indian food seems to be more difficult to create and complex in flavor than anything else. One dish can take me a couple of hours sometimes. I think I need an Indian mother to help me learn to cook it. I am proud of my pakora, though!

Letter to Sen. Heller Thank you for not lining up in lock-step behind the Republican leadership’s proposed health care legislation. I’ve written you before when you surprise me with a vote and your NO vote on this health care legislation is a much-appreciated surprise.

I listen to the Republican effort to try to sell this bill using outright lies and/or trying what they did in the House—getting members to vote for something they know is wrong with a promise that somewhere in the future it will get fixed. I hope you know what I and many Americans know, that this is pure bullshit. And I agree with Sen. Collins, who has stated correctly that patches and tweaks will not fix this bill. This is one of many upcoming challenges—call them tests—for you as a senator whose constituency is significantly more moderate than your party seems to be on almost all the critical issues. I hope your vote on this health care legislation

is an indication of how you will consider future legislation that is equally unfavorable to most Americans and your ability to do what is right for real people in your state.

Your party needs to stand up to the crazies who only care about philosophical dogma and getting re-elected in a gerrymandered district. There are plenty of votes nearer the center that can actually get things done for America. And most of us are plenty tired of how Republican leadership consistently caters to the extremists. In a true democracy, a small but loud minority cannot and should not decide what the majority can and can’t do.

Driven to distraction I’ve gone through this every third summer for the past two decades.

The foreign-owned contractor hired to oppress local bus system workers tries to provoke a strike to bust the Teamsters Union. Meanwhile, elected and appointed officials sit shiva while hiding under the sleazy skirt of plausible deniability. (“Not my department.”) Before you dust off your picket signs, contact the five elected members of the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) and tell them to stop this exploitation and allow workers a fair day’s pay for a hard day’s work.

Over the years, elected officials have squandered millions hiring foreign—European and Texan— management corporations to run the bus system into the ground. You will find chapter and verse at my website, NevadaLabor.com. Lesson: Never accept lowbid from out of state bandidos.

New bus drivers while receiving training—and not much of it—get unadjusted-for-inflation minimum wage. When they hit the streets, they get minimum wage adjusted for inflation. Which means some live in weekly motels and can never afford the Texans’ high-priced health insurance. Wonder how many have applied for welfare or food stamps? How many have to hit the ER for health care? You know who pays for that.

Two of three new hires quit over wages and working conditions. This has wasted well over a quartermillion taxpayer dollars in just the past three years.

Self-employed

The Texans have already imported a crew of expensive, professional union busters, hoping that the workers will strike so management can attempt to illegally fire everyone and blame the union.

Management minds seem made up either way. RTC and its minions can drop all pretense of fairness and lock out workers with or without a strike, then bring in the high-priced imports.

We taxpayers are already stuck with that cost along with posh salaries for RTC staffers, 35 of whom are compensated over $100,000 a year to a high of $322,510.59. They live high while some of their workers dwell in weekly motels. Or worse.

Stop it. Now. A growing region with a shrinking transportation system lives in a straitjacket of exploitation and embarrassment. Senior citizens, low-wage workers, young people, students, the sick and disabled, among many others, depend on our bus system.

Contact your elected officials and demand that they fix it. Now. Tell them that the buck stops with them, that you are tired of big taxpayer bucks being blown by bandidos from the land of the armadillo.

If you’re not registered to vote, please do so. And bring the family.

Two missed chances There were several issues Nevada’s legislators debated in 2017 but could not develop a consensus to move forward on, even in the Democratic caucuses.

One bill, Assembly Bill 237, would have eliminated the death penalty in Nevada, while another, Senate Bill 261, would have allowed terminally ill patients to choose to die with a doctor’s assistance.

Nevada hasn’t executed anyone since 2006 and will be unable to carry out the death penalty in the foreseeable future as the lethal drugs needed to do so are unavailable, but legislators still refused to give up the ultimate punishment. AB 237, sponsored by Assemblymember James Ohrenschall, D-Las Vegas, didn’t even make it out of the Judiciary Committee, chaired by another Democrat who works as a public defender in his day job.

There have always been a handful of legislators, such as Sen. Joe Neal and Assm. Bernie Anderson, who were strongly opposed to the state having the power to execute its citizens, but their

numbers have never reached critical mass.

Some progress has been made over the years in restricting the death penalty from being applied to certain sub-populations such as youth and persons with mental retardation, but Nevada has never come close to prohibition altogether.

Despite arguments that death penalty cases cost far more than non-death penalty cases and studies that show it is disproportionally applied to poor, minority populations, it’s not likely that Nevadans will change course and switch to the abolition side in 2019. After all, the state spent $900,000 over the last two years to build a new execution chamber at Ely State Prison. But legislators should be encouraged to consider further restrictions on the death penalty and prohibit its use for people with a severe mental illness.

States are uneven in the application of the death penalty for this population, with some using a standard of “rational understanding” of the punishment before

it can be applied. Research has shown that many people on death row do suffer from severe mental illness. The American Bar Association has endorsed proposals to ban the practice just as it is prohibited for children and the intellectually disabled.

Nevada’s legislative version of “Death with Dignity,” SB 261, was modeled after successful laws in six states, including neighboring Oregon, where it has worked well. Sen. David Parks said he sponsored the bill at the request of a friend who suffered greatly from bladder cancer in her final days. The bill had many safeguards in place to ensure proper use of the law, but some disability advocates feared it could be used to hasten the deaths of people with severe disabilities.

The medical community in Nevada seemed split between the rights of patients to make their own choices about their health care and the ethical imperative of doctors to do no harm. Nevada’s medical association took a neutral position on the bill, acknowledging the tension between

the two ethical principles of patient autonomy and the “do no harm” tenet.

It’s a difficult conversation to have in the public sphere but a necessary one. In the 2015 session, Sen. Joe Hardy—who is also a medical doctor—was so opposed to the concept he refused to give the bill a hearing in the Health Committee he chaired, depriving Nevadans of a public debate about an issue that eventually touches most families.

SB 261 barely passed the Senate on an 11-10 vote and was heard in the Assembly but did not advance from the Judiciary Committee. Perhaps the most poignant comment on the bill came from an unlikely source in the Senate. Rancher and Republican Sen. Pete Goicoechea voted in favor of the bill, saying he had seen far too many Nevadans choose a shotgun to end their misery. Ω Information on states with right to die laws: www.deathwithdignity.org

The coming Medicaid decisions On June 23, recently failed former Democratic Party presidential nominee Hillary Clinton tweeted, “Forget death panels! The GOP is the death party!”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren chimed in on the Senate floor: “These cuts are blood money! People will die!”

The Democrats and their media allies claim the Republican Party’s proposed health care reform will result in massive numbers of premature and unnecessary deaths by Medicaid recipients who lose their coverage.

The left has cried “Murder!” ever since welfare reform was signed by President Bill Clinton in 1996. The scenarios of starvation, disease and pestilence due to reforms of government entitlements never materialize quite like they predict. But in the health care case, the Democrats have picked an entitlement to champion that—like welfare— not only kills incentives to work but itself kills patients, 0r, at least, cannot be proven to actually save lives.

BEN HARPER & THE INNOCENT CRIMINALS Friday, July 28

Few people realize that the highly touted expansion of insurance coverage, which is the key accomplishment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA, or Obamacare) was 75 percent due to Medicaid expansion. The law promised the federal government would pick up 100 percent of the cost of the new enrollees—for the first three years, which ended in 2016—and 90 percent after that. Federal promises to pay the states for Medicaid expansion are eerily reminiscent of promises made to Native Americans to honor treaties so long as the sun shall shine and the grass shall grow—which, in this case, means 10 years max. Congress is broke.

Yet 31 governors, including Nevada’s Gov. Sandoval, bought into the program.

Medicaid expansion in Nevada to 138 percent of federal poverty level created 277,000 new enrollees, and Medicaid is projected to reach over 20 percent of Nevada’s population, or 800,000, by 2023. Of these, 371,000

projected enrollees will result from Medicaid expansion. Nevada’s Medicaid expenditures are expected to cost an additional $5.4 billion above projections without Medicaid expansion. Obamacare severely restricts the ability of Nevada to reduce eligibility for expansion or to reduce coverage. The Republican reforms would at least provide more flexibility to Nevada.

The pre-Clinton Aid to Families of Dependent Children program was exposed by a Democrat, Nixon aide Daniel Patrick Moynihan, for its destructive effects on the family structure of the poor—in particular, what had previously been the strength of the black community, the two-parent family.

The Democrats fought to the bitter end against welfare reform. Medicaid is another corrupt hill for them to choose to die on, yet die they seem determined to do. The Republicans, as usual, will likely meekly pull back from real reform and tinker with the program at the

margins instead of liberating the poor from the clutches of this awful government disaster.

Medicaid is the poster child for Republican rhetoric that merely having insurance does not mean you have health care. Fully 30 percent of doctors refuse to see new Medicaid patients because the red tape and poor compensation is not worth it. As a result, Medicaid patients visit the emergency room three times more often than even the uninsured. Only 20 percent of dentists accept Medicaid. The left continues to ignore the greatest problem with government health care—the frustrating delays involved with receiving actual care, which results in poor health outcomes, including unnecessary deaths.

Brower accused Former Washoe state legislator Greg Brower, now serving in D.C. as an FBI congressional liaison, was cited for misconduct in May for behavior while serving as U.S. attorney for Nevada.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission decision was issued May 19 but did not become public until the Las Vegas Review-Journal obtained a copy of the eight-page finding and reported on it July 13.

The EEOC decision found that a former female prosecutor endured sex discrimination and retaliation while serving under Brower between January 2008 and October 2009.

An administrative judge found—and the EEOC upheld the finding— that Brower was hostile toward the unnamed BROWER prosecutor after she complained about the sexist comments she was receiving from another supervisor. The finding also said the U.S. Attorney’s Office was slow in transferring the complaining prosecutor. No explanation was given for the eight years spent by the EEOC in resolving the case.

Brower, who has served as both a state assemblymember and senator, declined comment. He was hired for the liaison spot by FBI director James Comey, since fired by Donald Trump.

Brower was appointed U.S. attorney by George W. Bush in 2007, replacing Daniel Bogden. Bogden was one of nine U.S. attorneys forced out of office during the Bush administration, a mass firing that became a scandal and led to the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez.

MccaIN deaTH urGed A Nevada GOP leader has tweeted a wish for the death of U.S. Sen. John McCain.

Nevada Republican National Committeewoman Diana Orrock retweeted a tweet by a Caitlin Johnstone, who wrote, “Please Just Fucking Die Already #JohnMcCain. #Neocons #Russia.”

Orrock then wrote her own “Amen” to the Johnstone tweet.

McCain is a leading Republican critic of Donald Trump and has not yet decided how he will vote on the Republican health care plan that is intended to replace the Affordable Care Act. McCain’s May 14 surgery to remove a blood clot caused Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell to delay any action on the health care plan that Republicans were uncertain they could win.

Orrock ran last year for the Nevada Assembly, losing a three-way primary to fellow Republican David Gardner, who went on to lose to Democrat Steve Yeager. Orrock was also a delegate to the 2016 Republican National Convention.

Johnstone may be an Australian who calls herself a “rogue” reporter and was described by the Daily Banter last month as “a member of the Alt-Left movement dedicated to spreading vile conspiracy theories and atrocious journalism.”

McCain’s office issued a statement on July 15 that said, “Tissue pathology reports are pending within the next several days. Once the pathology information is available, further care will be discussed between doctors and the family. In the meantime, his Mayo Clinic care team will not be conducting interviews.” Mayo’s silence fostered rumors that McCain’s condition is more serious than expected, including a New York Times story headlined “McCain’s Surgery May Be More Serious Than Thought, Experts Say.”

Where credit’s due Laxalt claims to fund women’s health studies Nevada attorney General adam Laxalt this week announced he had “allocated” $1.2 million to the University of Nevada Medical School for an OB/ GYN program.

However, state law prohibits him from doing so.

Nevada Assembly budget chief Maggie Carlton said she started getting calls after Laxalt’s announcement, and she has asked legislative staffers to start checking it out. Senate budget vice chair David Parks is making similar inquiries.

“I got calls from people wanting to know what is going on,” Carlton said.

The Nevada Constitution reads, at article 4, section 19, “No money shall be drawn from the treasury but in consequence of appropriations made by law.”

In The Nevada Constitution/A Reference Guide, Michael Bowers wrote, “The government of Nevada is precluded by the terms of this section from spending money that has not been appropriated by the legislature. In

this regard, the legislature has virtual plenary [comprehensive] power.”

The attorney general’s office itself found in a formal April 28, 1920 legal opinion issued by A.G. Leonard Fowler, “Public moneys may only be disbursed pursuant to a valid appropriation of the Legislature. This is elementary.”

In a statement this week, Laxalt said, “The funding is part of $3.8 million that UNR Med will receive over five years, resulting from a settlement between Pfizer pharmaceutical company and the State of Nevada. The settlement resolved claims that Pfizer had unlawfully promoted certain postmenopausal hormone therapy medications.”

Former state attorneys general said lawsuit settlements normally go into the state general fund and are later appropriated to state programs and agencies by the Nevada Legislature.

Laxalt may be piggybacking on an old case settled by his predecessor.

Surprisingly, while the Laxalt announcement attracted wide news coverage, no journalist raised the question of why a

state attorney general was disbursing funds to state agencies.

While state officials like Laxalt can recommend such spending of settlements, Carlton said, “Usually they go through the board of examiners and then come through us.”

Some state legislators were upset by Laxalt’s announcement because they feel it puts them in a difficult position if they have to approve or disapprove funding he has already promised.

“This is the typical M-O for this particular office, which is it’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission,” Carlton said.

Carlton’s budget committee navigated a dispute with Laxalt during this year’s legislature over a request by gambling regulators that they be allowed to hire independent counsel because they had lost confidence in Laxalt.

Former Nevada attorneys general Richard Bryan and Frankie Sue Del Papa both said lawsuit settlement funds are normally appropriated by the Nevada Legislature, but that some settlements may contain language that affects the distribution. We asked Laxalt’s office for a copy of the Pfizer settlement document, but it was not supplied.

“I don’t ever recall the issue coming up [of the attorney general allocating funds], but my impression is that it would go to the general fund for disbursement by the legislators,” Bryan said.

He said one instance where money might not go to the general fund would be “a recovery under a provision of federal law enforced by the state where the money recovered would go to the victims.” That does not apply to this case.

Even if there were a stipulation in the lawsuit settlement that the money be used in a certain way, the Nevada Legislature would still have authority to use the funds how it saw fit. Otherwise, attorneys general could use settlements to set public policies or create programs that are the province of the legislature. Asked if a lawsuit settlement agreement can override the Nevada Constitution, Carlton said, “No, it can’t.”

coNsTITuTIoN Tops seTTLeMeNT In the best known state lawsuit settlement, the tobacco companies provide millions of dollars in payments over many years. But although state

22 n d a n n u a l attorneys general and journalists tried to create the impression that the states were legally required to spend the money on health care or tobacco prevention programs, in fact the settlement contained no such provision. Nevada’s version of the agreement said the uses for the money was to be “determined by the governor and the Legislature through the normal appropriation process.”

There was an expression of opinion inserted that the money be used for health care, but that was non-binding. Even it upset some legislators who considered it an intrusion. In the end, the tobacco settlement funds were used approximately 60 percent for healthrelated needs and 40 percent for Millennium Scholarships. And the decision was made by the Legislature.

One of the things Carlton is having researched is whether the Pfizer case is a new settlement or an old case she recalls dating back to 2014 that was negotiated by Laxalt’s predecessor. We located a 2014 press release issued by Catherine Cortez Masto, then state attorney general, in which she said a case had been settled with Pfizer in which the corporation “agreed to make an $8 million donation that will go towards the

University of Nevada School of Medicine and the University Medical Center to fund Nevada health care programs affecting women’s health issues.”

If the case turns out to be the same lawsuit that was negotiated by Cortez Masto in 2014, legislators have had two opportunities—at the 2015 and 2017 legislatures—to approve the Pfizer funding either for the medical school program or for other uses, which means the appropriation of funds to the medical school was legislative, not executive, though Laxalt’s news release this week took credit for it: “Today, Nevada Attorney General Adam Paul Laxalt announced the allocation of $1.2 million to the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) to create a new OB/GYN department based in Reno with UNR Med community and hospital partners.” Cortez Masto did not attend Laxalt’s announcement.

If Laxalt’s announcement concerned Cortez Masto’s case, there was no immediate explanation for the difference in dollar amounts between the two, although the legislature may have made adjustments.

The 2014 Pfizer case was prosecuted by Cortez Masto’s deputies, Kristine Kuzemka and Sheri Ann Forbes. Ω

Sherrie Scaffidi is a Fernley retiree in her 60s with a funny story about visiting her cardiologist.

“Scaffidi, what’s going on?” the doctor, Basil Chryssos, asked. This was about four years ago, shortly after Sherrie—who used to be Paul—had decided to live as a woman. The change would be helped along by hormone treatments. But the doctor knew none of this yet.

“Your hair’s getting long,” the doctor said. “You look like one of the Beatles.”

Scaffidi needed an OK from the cardiologist in order to begin taking the hormones. She had already announced to her three grown children and her siblings that the transition was imminent—and already encountered some awkward moments, plus a level of family support that she found heartening—but she had trouble finding the words to announce it to the cardiologist.

“I love my cardiologist,” said Scaffidi, recalling the incident recently. “He’s great. But he and I have had a very macho relationship over the years. I used to work at Scheels, selling firearms, and he would come in and buy guns from me all the time.”

“I had a letter from my therapist, so I just handed him the letter,” she said. “And he read the letter, and he looked at me, and he said, ‘You really think I care about this stuff?’ He said, ‘I don’t care about this at all.’ He said, ‘You know what I care about? I care about your heart.’ He said, ‘Is this what you want to do?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘Is it going to make you happy?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘By all means, do it. It’s the best thing for your health.’”

Chryssos’ concern about his patient being happy isn’t simply a sign of him being a nice guy. For a population that faces harassment, violence, discrimination and a suicide rate often cited above 40 percent, the support of health practitioners is a critical piece of health care.

Six months later, Scaffidi went to the cardiologist again. The doctor opened the door to the examining room, thought he was walking in on the wrong patient, and started to leave. Then he realized the patient was a more feminine-looking Scaffidi. These days, she looks

like the lady next door. On a summer day, she’s likely to sport casual retiree wear—a tank top, sneakers and a simple barrette—and shoulder length hair with a rich, graphite color that her hairdresser has deemed too enviable to condone dyeing.

Here’s her recollection of that moment when the doctor came back into the room: “And then he said, ‘You look pretty good as a woman, Scaffidi,’ And I said, ‘Thanks, Doc.’ And I’ve seen him several times since then. We have a great relationship.”

Changing social climate Thirty-one years ago, a Nevada Supreme Court decision took away the parenting rights of Reno’s Suzanne Lindley Daly because she was transgender (see “Stripped rights,” RN&R, July 13). As of late, Nevada is more transgender-friendly. This year, the state Legislature passed SB 110, allowing transgender people to legally change their names without having to publish an announcement in a newspaper, a move toward privacy and safety, and SB 188, adding “gender identity or expression” to the list of things it’s illegal for employers and landlords to discriminate against.

Scaffidi likes to talk about how grateful she is that most—though not all—people in her life have been warm and supportive to her since she came out. She gave extra props to her 31-year-old daughter’s friends and peers, who have embraced her new persona—and it is, to a large extent, a whole new persona. Paul did not strike up conversations with strangers in elevators; Sherrie most certainly does—with love and friendship.

And when it comes to health care, she’s found many—though not all—practitioners knowledgeable and supportive.

Scaffidi said, “Some want to learn, some are ambivalent, some are downright hostile.” She knows of a transgender person who, while being treated for a broken arm, saw doctors call each other into the room to gawk.

Her own general practitioner was supportive about the transition but admitted to having no training in transgender health needs. He recommended a younger doctor.

types of care Health care needs for transgender people include habits as basic as using patients’ preferred pronouns and first names in the office, practices as routine as prescribing hormones, and procedures as invasive as surgery.

Tori Skocdopole, a nurse practitioner at Northern Nevada HOPES, said mental health care is also a priority.

“With transitioning, there’s the basic physical and mental health assessments,” she said. “We also recommend people work with a psychiatrist if they need to, to make sure existing conditions are stabilized before they go through with [hormone] therapy.”

Then there are the physical realities of caring for certain body parts. Those who transition from female to male, Skocdopole said, “still require checkups on chest and breast tissue when it’s still in place. Men can get breast cancer. Same with if a cervix and uterus and ovaries are still in place.” For some, she said, these procedures can be traumatizing. For others, they’re run of the mill.

Many—but not all—transgender people undergo hormone replacement therapy, also called cross-sex hormone treatments. These are used widely—though not universally, as each person makes an individualized set of decisions about whether or how to physically transition. Ideally, they are prescribed by a practitioner and self-administered in an injection, patch or pill. But they are not always covered by insurance, so many people rely on “black-market” hormones, self prescribed and purchased online.

While Scaffidi said, “Most of the doctors I know who are treating someone with cross[-sex] hormone therapy will tell you that it’s easier to treat someone with cross[sex] hormone therapy than it is to treat somebody with diabetes,” both she and Skocdopole said that providers in general need more education on the subject.

“There’s no formal training on this,” said Skocdopole.

So, how did she end up knowledgeable herself?

“There are a lot of little sub-specialties in the larger specialties of primary care,” she said. “You find a niche … find what you like.” She’s did her graduate training at University of California, San Francisco, where she took an elective in transgender medicine, and she now works for an organization that prides itself on an ethic of inclusivity. She relies on guidelines issued by Boston’s Fenway Institute and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH).

WPATH, she said, is in the process of starting “a credentialing pathway, a certification pathway. This is the first of its kind.”

Also, said Skocdopole, “My patients have taught me a lot.”

Often—though not always—transgender patients undergo surgery as part of a transition. Two common procedures are “bottom surgery,” which involves genital reconstruction, and facial feminization surgery (FFS), in which facial bones are ground down so that people with features such as a prominent brow ridge or a strong jaw can be made to look more feminine.

“It’s really hard to blend socially if you’re trying to, or if that’s important to you,” said Allison Clift-Jennings, a Reno woman who transitioned a few years ago and has undergone FFS. “It’s really, really hard.”

Bottom surgeries are not available in Reno. Skocdopole said locals who decide to have them are likely to travel to the Bay Area or Phoenix. FFS is not performed in Reno either. Clift-Jennings traveled to Spain for the procedure.

She said that she spent about $20,000, including travel and some additional medical treatments. FFS is available in San Francisco, where, she estimated, it costs more in the neighborhood of $60,000.

Unusual circumstances On top of the common health procedures such as hormones and surgeries, sometimes there are, in this community of

people with widely varying circumstances, some less usual health needs.

Take Clift-Jennings. Four years ago, she was a man with a wife and two teenage children. Now, she’s a woman—with the same wife and the same two teenage children.

Biologically, she’s a father, and she now hopes to become a mother—which has already involved years of planning.

“When I came out to [my wife]—this was like four years ago now—first we had to figure out what the hell this meant,” she said. The couple knew then that they might want to try to conceive a baby at some point, but hormone therapy eventually halts sperm production, and they had some things to work out before trying to conceive. So, before taking hormones, Clift-Jennings had a vasectomy reversal and banked some sperm at UCSF Medical Center for later.

“We had a lot of ‘each-other’ work to work on, marriage therapy, and then it was like, OK, well we’ve got our heads wrapped around what this means,” she said. She and her wife are now actively trying to conceive.

Clift-Jennings acknowledged that this could sound to some like an overly indulgent use of medical resources, but she looks at it differently.

She said that, raising her two teens, “I didn’t neglect or anything, but I feel like I didn’t have my full self to give.”

This not-all-the-way-present feeling, she said, existed in a lot of aspects of her life, pre-transition.

She said that the feeling of knowing that you’ve been assigned the wrong gender is hard to describe. It’s like there’s constant white noise blocking the chirping of birds and other, subtler sounds. One of her best analogies is that it’s like trying to feel the texture of a piece of silk or a dog’s fur through heavy winter mittens.

“You can kind of get the impression, but you don’t really know,” she said. “When someone starts to get on

the right path for their transition, whether that’s social or medical or both, they’re taking the gloves off, or they’re turning down the white noise. And now they can fully be present. They can be a human being again.”

This, she said, is important not just for the sake of one person’s psychological comfort. It’s a key component of mental health and family stability.

“That’s super important,” she said. “I think that’s lost in a lot of the discussion around trans health. People are thinking [trans people are] just mutilating their bodies.

It’s not that at all. People wouldn’t go through this kind of stuff if it was for funsies. This is serious.” She said that having access to good mental health care—for which she relies on HOPES, which she referred to as “Grand Central Station for finding those resources”—has a trickle-down effect on families.

“Those kids will be more stable and supported,” she said. “There’s a ratchet effect there.”

Further education Patients and health care providers alike have said that learning how to offer quality health care to transgender people is an ongoing process.

“Right now, there is not enough medical training in the medical schools for how to treat trans people,” Scaffidi said. “As trans people, we are educating the medical profession. They are accepting of what we try to teach them. They need to learn it in school.”

Recently, she spoke with a nursing class at the University of Nevada, Reno. As a member of the Transgender Allies Group and PFLAG, a volunteer at Our Center, and leader of the League of Gender Inclusive Citizens, she’s used to speaking to people. Her standard introduction is a chain saw of an ice-breaker. It goes like

this: “I introduce myself, and I say I’m going to piss off at least one person in this room—because of how I identify.

This is how I identify: As a Christian, a fiscal conservative, a social libertarian,” she’ll say, pausing with a bit of gravity between each identifier so listeners can soak it all in.

“A Navy veteran, a gun-carrying, 67-year-old transgender woman, who happens to be a dad.”

Scaffidi gave the nursing students license to ask anything, even if it was too personal to ask a stranger.

They asked what it was like to be out in public. They asked about the effects of hormones. (“I’d hear a song on the radio, and I’d start crying,” she answered. “It was amazing how emotional I got.”)

One student asked, “How do you feel when people say it’s a choice?”

“I said, ‘Nobody would choose to do what trans people do,’” Scaffidi answered. “There’s no way you would choose this. I get my eyebrows waxed every two to three weeks. That’s not the most comfortable thing in the world.

Much as Scaffidi is quick to relay stories and insights like this one with ease and humor, topics that touch on identity and appearance often lead straight back to discussions about mental health, and pretty commonly back to the transgender community’s high suicide rate. That 40-percent figure has been linked by recent studies directly to familial/societal rejection, and that’s one of the reasons that Scaffidi wants people to know who she is.

She hopes other transgender people will follow suit in being visible, vocal and approachable—but only when and if they’re ready.

“If you’re not comfortable with it, I totally understand,” she said. “But if you’re comfortable being out, and being outed, it’s very important to be visible.

Because, when you talk to people and they realize you’re just like they are, you’re not evil, you’re not maniacal, you’re not some wacko, you don’t have these crazy ideas—you’re like, ‘Oh, trans people are not what I thought they were. They’re just like me.’”

curtain A small pool of craftspeople keep Reno’s theater scene alive

week before Reno Little Theater’s Murder in Green Meadows wrapped, the stage looked like something out of Mid Century Modern magazine—all clean lines and chrome, with cool tones perfectly suited to this story of suburban evil. It probably never occurred to show attendees what hoops RLT Technical Director Chad Sweet had to jump through to dress the stage this way.

“We got a corporate sponsorship from Scandinavian Designs,” Sweet said of the perfectly appointed set. “I had to do some talking, certainly, but they ended up being super nice and supportive, and they loaned us $3,000 worth of furniture. So it’s a bit of a sales job.”

It’s also bit of garage-sale shopper, collector and artisan job—big donations are rare. Sweet purchased one painting on the wall a year ago, in anticipation of this show.

“There are things you have to make, too,” he said. “We need blood on stage, so you have to figure out how to make the blood, because it also has to wash off, that kind of thing.”

These are the sorts of challenges theater craftspeople encounter daily. While folks generally speak of live theater in terms of performance, few theatergoers spend time considering the art hanging on the walls of a set, the moods created in a scene through light and shadow, the flexibility of a costume or the props held in actors’ hands.

The artisans handling these elements are the unsung—and often unpaid— heroes of local theater, without whom our theater scene would not be the burgeoning success it is.

Setting the stage

Theaters often have to find creative ways to fund sets on slim budgets. For Murder in Green Meadows, Reno Little Theater relied on living room furniture borrowed from Scandinavian Designs.

Like many working in theater, Sweet wanted to be an actor. He majored in art at New York’s Elmira College—his backup plan, he said—and his first acting gig required that he also work in scenic, lighting, sound and costume design.

“I learned early on as an actor that if I wanted to work all the time in theater, I probably had to do more than just act,” he said.

These days, Sweet is one of the few Reno actors working a full-time, paid theater position. His job as technical director and production manager for RLT involves designing and building sets, assembling props, designing light and sound, working with volunteers and managing productions from conception through performance. In all, it’s a three-month-long process—or more—all with a miniscule, or even nonexistent, budget.

Though Sweet may occasionally take the stage at night, “We decide our shows more than a year in advance, so I’m really focused like five shows out,” he said.

Making room Nada Dada 2017 When the first Nada Dada art festival— then called Dada Motel—was held in 2007, the point, at least in part, was to push back against the status quo of the city’s established art festival, Artown.

The idea was to hold an inclusive, anything-goes art show with no curatorial oversight or jurying. To bring their vision to life, the founding artists rented rooms in the El Cortez hotel and put exhibitions in each.

The event, as the iterations of its name suggest, was inspired by the anarchic ideals of dadaism and similar movements—so calling it a success might actually be an affront to its participants who would object that they never set out to accomplish anything, per se. Nonetheless, local artists have come together every June since to recreate it—basing their no-rules shows in Reno weeklies, from the Lido to the recently demolished Wildflower Village.

The tagline for Nada Dada has long been “Get a room; make a show.” This year, though, there’s an elephant in the room. That’s because when Nada Dada kicks off, a month later than in years past, it’ll be an official Artown event. But what does that mean? How did Nada Dada go from reacting against Artown to participating in it?

“Well, number one is that Artown didn’t ask us to participate in July,” said repeat Nada Dada artist Rex Norman, better known as Killbuck. “We made the decision to do that, and partly because the traditional date we were using—the third week in June—has been filled up with so many different events, you know, rodeo, the Blues and Brews festival. … And so we were sort of event-crowded-out.”

But that wasn’t the only reason for rescheduling. According to Killbuck and

fellow Nada Dada artist Jenn Thornton, finding motel rooms in advance of the event has become increasingly difficult over the years—first as a result of the recession and more recently because of a lack of affordable housing in the wake of job growth. This year, it looked like securing rooms might be impossible.

“We just kind of got pushed out of the downtown area,” said Thornton.

As for the Artown connection? “It was mentioned in passing, I forget who brought it up to somebody who’s connected to Artown, and they got very excited,” Killbuck said. “They said, ‘Well, you know, contact us, and we’ll put you in the calendar.’ And so we weren’t actually looking to become part of Artown, but Artown kind of wanted us to participate. And so we said, ‘Sure.’”

Killbuck and Thornton said, overall, the change isn’t that big of a deal. The distaste for Artown, they said, was never universal.

And by moving the event to July, they were able to house almost all of the participating artists inside the Morris Burner Hostel, with a few others at the Potentialist Workshop.

Still, there is no selection committee, no censorship.

“Everybody is their own curator,” Killbuck said. “Artown has left us entirely alone. They’ve known about us for a long time, and so they know our primary organizational characteristic is that we have very little to no organization. … As Artown has grown, too, there has been a lot more local artist participation. They still focus on imported headline talent, but you know that’s not really a bad thing—as long as local artists can be at the table as well.” Ω

Nada Dada 2017 opens at 7 p.m. on July 20 at the Morris Burner Hostel, 400 E. Fourth St., and the Potentialist Workshop, 836 E. Second St. The show will be open Thursday until 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. until at least 9 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Sometimes i get road rage walking behind people at the grocery store.”

Romantic coma The Big Sick is a romantic comedy like no other.

Yes, two people fall in love in it, but that’s about all it has in common with the average romantic comedy. This film is an amazing beast off in its own rom-com category. Let’s just call it a rom-coma comedy.

Real-life couple Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley) and Emily V. Gordon penned the script based on their own courtship. Nanjiani plays himself while the eternally awesome Zoe Kazan (Ruby Sparks) steps into the role of Emily.

Their story is incredible, and the way it is presented here, by a fine ensemble under the direction of the great Michael Showalter (Hello, My Name is Doris; Wet Hot American Summer) stands as one of the year’s best films.

Kumail is a standup comedian trying to make it in Chicago when Emily takes in one of his sets and gets noticed. The two wind up in bed together, with Kumail actually being the Uber driver that has to take her home. They have a good time, but they also vow to never see each other again.

That doesn’t last long, and the two wind up in a relationship, one that Kumail keeps secret from his Pakistani parents (Anupam Kher and Zenobia Shroff) who are trying to arrange a wife for him.

Things get complicated, and the two of them split.

Things get even more complicated when Emily winds up in the emergency room with flu-like symptoms, and Kumail is called upon by her friends to check up on her.

After an awkward hospital visit, Emily winds up in an induced coma, with Kumail informing her parents (Ray Romano and Holly Hunter). As Emily’s situation worsens, Kumail, technically her ex-boyfriend, spends a lot of time with her parents, and a lot of time coming to terms with his feelings for Emily.

Nothing you know about Ray Romano will prepare you for just how damn good he is as Terry, Emily’s sensitive dad. I mean, the man was funny on Everybody Loves Raymond but hell if I knew

he could not only do drama, but more than hold his own with an epic Holly Hunter. He has a scene in Kumail’s apartment, where he reveals details of his marital tensions, that will stand as one of the year’s best acted scenes. He’s a legitimate best supporting actor Oscar contender.

Hunter is right there along with him when it comes to Oscar worthiness. Her Beth is a strongwilled person, so strong she practically beats up a frat boy heckling Kumail at one of his gigs. Hunter is always good, but this role is her best in years.

It’s also her funniest turn since playing Edwina in Raising Arizona 30 years ago. Yes, Raising Arizona came out 30 years ago. Let that linger for a moment.

Showalter, who actually spoofed romantic comedies, co-writing the script for 2014’s They Came Together starring Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler, rides the film’s shifting tones like an expert surfer sliding in and out of waves and skipping over sharks. There are so many ways that this movie could’ve gone wrong, but it’s never melodramatic or kitschy or cutesy. It deals with every relationship, cultural and family issue in an incisive way that’s mostly absent from the movies, all while making you laugh and cry. Hats off to Showalter.

Nanjiani, like Romano, has shown a stellar ability to make us laugh with past projects, but he delivers a range of emotions here that should keep him in dramatic roles for the foreseeable future, if he wants them. Alas, he is yet another Oscar contender this film has to offer. And even though her character spends a good chunk of this movie asleep, don’t count out Kazan either, an actress of extreme power.

I don’t think I’ve ever had to use my T-shirt sleeve to dab away tears from both laughing and crying while watching a movie in public. The Big Sick got me both ways, and it will get you, too. Ω

This is a nice car chase movie antidote to The Fate of the Furious, a car chase movie that made me never want to see a car chase movie again, let alone Vin Diesel’s mushy mug. The soundtrack is one of the year’s best, and the guy in the title role is a major star in the making. Ansel Elgort plays Baby, who we see in the film’s opening sequence driving the getaway car for a robbery, a kinetic chase choreographed to the great Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s “Bellbottoms.” The scene snaps with a colorful energy that’s been missing from car chases of late. The best car chase movie of recent years, Drive, also featured a lonely driver and great vroom-vroom, but the soundtrack and look for that film were more meditative and hazy—not complaining; it worked beautifully. Baby Driver opts for a more clear-eyed, zippy approach, and it pays off. Edgar Wright writes and directs for this, a project he took up after his failed dalliance with Ant-Man. The chases go off with precision editing, filmed in a way that makes you feel like you are in the car.

And the soundtrack, featuring music ranging from Simon and Garfunkel to Hocus Pocus and Queen, perfectly complements them.

The Cars franchise gets a nice little rebirth with Cars 3, a much, much better movie than Cars 2, and a slightly better movie than the first Cars. If you’re keeping score— and, really, you shouldn’t be, for there are far more pressing matters in your life—that still makes Cars 3 one of the more mediocre offerings from Pixar. Still, a mediocre Pixar film is better than most animated movies. Jettisoning the stupid spy movie bullshit—oops, I just cursed in a review for a G-rated movie … sorry, kids—that made the last installment convoluted and useless, the folks at Pixar choose to go an earthier, more emotional route with this one, and it works, for the most part. They also find a way to get the voice of the late Paul Newman into the mix, and hearing his beautiful growl again definitely warms the heart. Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is getting on in years, and he’s facing fierce competition from newer model cars like Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer), a strong, highly-trained vehicle that is beating McQueen on the racetrack. After a calamitous accident that renders his beautiful red sheen primer gray, McQueen is faced with either retirement or a new training regime comeback, Rocky III-style. The movie plays around with the notions of retirement and the rites of passage to the next generation, pretty heady stuff for a G-rated animated movie. Give the screenwriters credit for finally coming up with a story for Lightning McQueen that caters as much to adults as it does to kids.

Okja

Director Joon-ho Bong, purveyor of spectacularly wacky cinematic things (The Host, Snowpiercer) delivers, perhaps, his wackiest yet with this tale about a future world where meat is scarce, so huge pigs are biogenetically engineered for slaughter. The title character is a prized, giant animal raised in the mountains by Mija (Seo Hyun), a young girl who thinks Okja is her pet. She’s oblivious to the fact that Okja’s days are numbered, so when an envoy for a large corporation (Jake Gyllenhaal going nuts) shows up and takes Okja away, Mija flies into action, and the bizarre adventure begins. Paul Dano, one of the kings of movie weirdness, chips in as the leader of an animal rescue corps that includes Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) and Lily Collins. Following up her collaboration with Bong on Snowpiercer is Tilda Swinton, once again playing twins, as she did in Hail, Caesar!, two evil sisters running the corporation that produced Okja. The movie mixes absurd laughs with mayhem, and the cast is universally great. Like films such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Babe before it, this movie looks to shine a light on the cruel treatment of animals and perhaps get you to pass on the bacon the next time you are at Denny’s. It’s streaming on Netflix.

Spider Man: Homecoming

The last two Spidey adventures were a bummer. Things get back on track in a fun way with Spider-Man: Homecoming, a complete overhaul of the Peter Parker character thanks to the effervescent casting of Tom Holland, a fine actor and an impressive athlete (he does most of his own acrobatic stunts). The film gets a great villain in Vulture, played with snarling glee by Michael Keaton. Director Jon Watts and an admittedly ridiculous number of writers give Vulture an interesting origin.

He’s Adrian Toones, a construction salvage worker who had a city contract to clean up the mess in New York City after the events of The Avengers. Some government types take over and kick him off the gig, leaving him pissed and with a bunch of high-tech alien junk in his possession. Toones constructs some weapons, including an elaborate winged suit, with the alien technology and, voila, Vulture. Parker is a younger incarnation this time out, dealing with typical high school traumas that seem a little trivial after the events of Captain America: Civil War, where he sort of saved the day. He’s gone from stealing Captain America’s shield to worrying about girls, and he’s just a little bored. Enter Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) who has given Parker his Spidey suit with some conditions, like that he can only be a “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man,” concentrating on local problems The film is basically one half kick-ass Marvel movie—Watts is no slouch with an action sequence—and one half enjoyable and frothy high school comedy that would make John Hughes proud.

Transformers: The Last Knight

The latest Transformers movie, Transformers: The Last Knight, gets the dubious distinction of being the worst in the series. That is some sort of major accomplishment. It’s not the easiest thing in the world to look at this collective pile of movie manure and decipher which of the five is the worst. It’s like going to a frat house the first week of a semester at Dickhead University and trying to pick out the dumbest, drunkest douche in the place.

All of the qualifiers are terribly, criminally lame.

I’m giving the award of franchise worst because it’s just so clear how every participant in this enterprise, from director Michael Bay right on down to the production assistant who smeared glycerin on Mark Wahlberg’s pecs, is jaded, tired and played out. The stink of “Who gives a shit … just pay me!” hits your nostrils with Wahlberg’s first line delivery. The best part of this movie is when Anthony Hopkins inexplicably goes to Stonehenge to witness a robot battle then gets blown up, leading to the silliest death scene ever. Yep, I just issued a spoiler. Anthony Hopkins, who should be ashamed of himself for participating in this thing, dies hilariously in this movie.

War for the Planet of the Apes

The enthralling, modern Planet of the Apes trilogy comes to a close with its best chapter yet. Caesar (motion-capture Andy Serkis) is holding his own in the forest with his band of ape soldiers when a crazed colonel (Woody Harrelson) finds him and delivers a painful blow. Caesar finds himself on a revenge quest, with the likes of Rocket (Terry Notary), Maurice (Karin Konoval) and a new character named Bad Ape (a funny Steve Zahn) in tow. It all leads to a man vs. ape showdown for the ages, and the special effects that were great in the first movie are 10 times better in the third. For fans of the original Apes films, this movie is a virtual love letter to the series.

It even has a mute girl named Nova (Amiah Miller), the same name as the girl who saw the Statue of Liberty with Charlton Heston in the original. Matt Reeves, directing his second Ape film, has managed to imbue his special effectsladen adventure with genuine emotion. This is a big budget blockbuster with heart and soul.

While this concludes a trilogy, it’s a safe bet it won’t be the last for the Apes. If you recall, astronauts went missing in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Events in this film seem to be leading up to the events of the original movie. We might be getting a new dude in a loin cloth barking at Lady Liberty in our cinematic future.

The restaurant’s namesake Texas Meltz burger features a half-pound patty on Texas toast.

In your mouth Tucked inside a frozen yogurt joint, Texas Meltz is a sandwich shop with quite a lot to offer. My pals and I skipped the cold sub menu in favor of the Texasthemed “meltz.”

The hot sandwiches are available with a choice of cheeses on either grilled Texas toast or an eight-inch roll. We started with a Lubbock meltz ($8.25) with Swiss cheese layered between two slices of thick, crispy toast. Pieces of grilled chicken breast were topped with ham and grilled onion and housemade chipotle mayonnaise. The chicken was tender and went well with the ham.

The next three sandwiches were ordered on grilled sub rolls, beginning with the Dallas meltz ($8.75), featuring thin sliced brisket, mild barbecue sauce, grilled onion and American cheese. The sauce was on the sweet side, and though I didn’t detect much smoke on the meat, it was tender and fairly lean. The Austin meltz’s ($8.75) mix of pastrami, roast beef, grilled onion and provolone made for a decent sandwich, and that zippy mayo brought it all together.

Perhaps my favorite of the trio was the San Antonio ($8.75), essentially a hot club sandwich of turkey, ham, bacon, grilled onion and pepper jack cheese working in concert with the chipotle mayonnaise.

Cheesesteak sandwiches are a common source of argument, but I’ll go out on a limb and say the Texas steak meltz ($8.75) was an acceptable example. Thin sliced beef was chopped and grilled with bell pepper, mushroom and onion—glued together with plenty of melted provolone.

And we chose to add the chipotle mayo, because why not? The soft, crusty roll may

not be the “one true bread” that purists insist on, but then this sandwich doesn’t have Philadelphia in the name. The breadto-filling ratio leaned heavily toward meaty, cheesy goodness.

Completing the menu is a selection of burgers, each featuring a half-pound beef patty cooked to order, served on Texas toast. I was initially confused by the name of the Hawaiian Falls burger ($8.50) but was told its namesake is a Texas chain of island-themed water parks. Regardless, if the idea of a decent burger topped with ham, melted Swiss and a thick slice of fresh pineapple appeals to you, you’ll love this combination.

Last but so incredibly not least, was the Texas Meltz burger ($8.50)—one of the best I’ve enjoyed in a while. Cooked as ordered—medium rare—the half-pound burger was topped with pulled pork, cole slaw, grilled onion, pepper jack, spicy barbecue sauce and chipotle mayo. Texas toast provided outstanding support while adding flavor and crunch. The slaw was tangy with good flavor—not too sweet— and the pork was moist and chunky enough to add some bite to the burger.

Speaking of smoke, the best kept secret in this hidden gem of a sandwich shop is the potato salad ($2). There have been very few examples of this Euro-American side I’ve enjoyed, and most commercial preparations are either way too sweet or just plain bland and boring. This housemade bit of creamy heaven included what appeared to be bell pepper, perhaps scallion, definitely lots of bacon and smoke. It was unexpected and delicious, and I wanted to lick the cup when it was gone. Ω

STILL “Doe” the bartender toasts a house specialty, barrel-aged Belle Meade.

New West Leaving work just after 5 p.m. on a Sunday, I had an hour to kill before meeting family for dinner, so I decided to make the best of that time and find beer. I considered a few places I’ve been wanting to try, but nothing really grabbed me—everything felt too hip, too divey or too far away. One spot popped into my head and stuck, so I took a short drive to 40 Mile Saloon.

I remembered hearing about 40 Mile when it opened in the old brick building at the corner of South Virginia and Mt. Rose streets. After successfully running Chapel Tavern there for five years, owner Duncan Mitchell moved that bar north a few blocks to focus on cocktails, then turned the former Chapel into 40 Mile Saloon, a neighborhood beer-and-shots joint. For no reason at all, I’d never paid it a visit. I just noticed the outside patio deck recently despite it having been there several years.

I learned 40 Mile opened five years ago because when I asked, the bartender confirmed the date by looking at the ceiling,where the first dollar bill spent on a drink in the bar is dated and stapled to the exposed ceiling beams, among many others of its kind. He told me that ownership recently passed to a cousin and founding Chapel employee, so Mitchell’s historic family memorabilia remained on the walls.

Simply calling the place a “saloon” rather than bar, tavern or pub gives a hint to the atmosphere they’re going for. Throw in those family antiques, the wooden ceiling beams, and the bar’s name—a reference a harsh pioneer route—and it’s clear: Old West. Fortunately, they avoided pretense and corniness, but the problem is taking over a space that previously housed a cool, urban bar. There’s definitely some Chapel remaining in 40 Mile Saloon, but that’s not a bad thing.

A knowledge of and enthusiasm for whiskies of all sorts is on display behind the bar, multitudes of brown liquors from around the world. A concise menu of handcrafted cocktails is available for those so inclined, but I was directed toward beer listings—chalk-scrawled on an exposed steel beam for drafts and a nearby chalkboard for bottles. The beer selection straddles the line between simple saloon beer and popular craft, epitomized in the first two tap options: basic retro Hamm’s and Imbib’s sour Blackberry Weisse. I ordered a slightly fancier but fairly basic lager and settled in, my attention divided between a baseball game, people-watching drivers at the stoplight outside, and mindless smartphone fiddling.

Despite low expectations for socializing early on a Sunday evening, a few friends were there, wrapping up a low-key daydrinking stop. We made small talk until their tab was settled, and they moved on.

A few regulars continued their discussions at the bar while I considered the thematic mix—it’s hard to really feel Western while the bartender crafts a cocktail with gingerhoney syrup and fresh lemon from behind a raw concrete bar in an establishment with DJ nights, where old chaps hang on the wall and basic lager beers like grandpa used to drink are served alongside modern microbrews.

An epiphany came to me with my second beer, while I asked about the R&B I was enjoying in the background (Otis Redding)—40 Mile Saloon is like a microcosm of Reno itself. The Old West subtly meshing with the hip and modern. Cows grazing near tech startups. Throwing craps after white-water kayaking. Satisfied, I left the saloon and went for some sushi. Ω

Georgia Maestro, Mike Grover and Pat Williams of Pushbox started making music together again last year, after a five-year break.

Grow your own way Pushbox There was no fight to prompt the dissolution of Pushbox, but the Reno rock band played its final show on July 22, 2011 at Sidelines Bar in Sparks.

“It wasn’t like we stopped playing together, but I needed a break from people in general,” said Georgia Maestro.

The multi-instrumentalist singersongwriter describes her life during the years that followed as a “spiritual walkabout.”

“Some parts of it I was traveling around, all over the U.S.,” Maestro said.

“Parts of it I lived in L.A. It was a big, big, huge transformational period for me, in order to find who I was without being around anybody else who could imprint what their thoughts of me were.

I played with other people. … I took more vocal lessons. I joined the Nevada Opera when I came back into town. I did vocal jazz a cappella … and even took more piano lessons from my mom.”

Her bandmates, drummer Pat Williams and bassist-cellist Mike Grover, stuck together, for the most part.

“We went to a little different, more of a funky vibe—as bass players and drummers kind of have a tendency to do,” Grover said. “And we didn’t really look to replace Georgia. We just did it for fun—which is a good thing, because we never lost our timing, our fit-together.”

A little more than a year ago, Grover and Maestro decided to start collaborating again. It wasn’t long before Williams joined them.

“It was cool because as soon as we got back together, it was just like we

had never left each other,” Maestro said. “And it was fun because all we did was like—I laughed so hard I cried, and then I played music with these wonderful people.”

“We’ve always had an amazing thing where we can just play and write really well together,” Williams said. “I don’t think we’d probably ever experience it with other people. We can write a song in like 10 seconds, it seems like.”

That’s only sort of hyperbole. In the 15 years since they first started playing together, the trio has written more than 200 songs. And they’ve been writing more since their reunion last year.

“We’re gearing up for recording, and I think that’s coming sooner rather than later—so that’s one of things that I want to see us all doing,” Maestro said.

“I think that’s another art form that we really thrive in together—recording, for sure. I mean, before, when we were together, we had at least like eight albums of recordings. Not all of those are complete gems, but we recorded quite a bit.”

The band’s new music actually sounds a lot like its old stuff, which is to say it’s eclectic—with songs that cover the canon of rock ’n’ roll styles, from ballads to art pop numbers in the vein of artists like Fiona Apple.

“For me, the difference in the band is that each of us is an individual, and we’re not dependent on the success of what this group can do, because we are successful—because every time we get together it is successful,” Maestro said. “And that’s different. I think the drive, in the past, was to make it—whatever that means. Now, it’s like I have made it, because I get to play with these people.” Ω

Lewd Skywalker A guy friend of 20 years and I once fooled around years ago. Though he has a girlfriend, he keeps throwing sexual remarks into our conversations, sending inappropriate texts and asking me to send naked photos. I wouldn’t be interested even if he were single, and I’ve been giving subtle hints, like “ha-ha … gotta go,” right after he says something provocative, but it isn’t working. How do I politely get him to stop without ruining a very long friendship?

As a means of communication, hinting to a man is like having a heartfelt conversation with your salad.

This isn’t to say men are dumb. They just aren’t emotional cryptographers. Social psychologist Judith A. Hall finds that women are generally far better at spotting and interpreting nonverbal messages.

Women tend to use their own ability for decoding unspoken stuff as the standard for what they expect from men. So, for example, the longer a man takes to notice that his girlfriend is pouting the darker things get—with hate glares and maybe some cabinet-slamming … and then, the grand finale: “Hey, heartless! Time for a monthlong reunion with your first sex partner, a.k.a. your right hand!”

There’s also a major sex difference in how males and females speak. A body of research finds that from childhood on, males tend to be direct: “Gimme my truck, butthead!” Females tend to be indirect (couching what they want in hints and polite and even apologetic language): “Um, sorry, but I think that’s my Barbie.”

Psychologist Joyce Benenson points out that these conversational sex differences line right up with evolved sex differences in our, uh, job descriptions. Men evolved to be the warrior-protectors of the species.

This is not done with coy hints.

Women’s mealy-mouthing, on the other hand, dovetails with a need to avoid physical confrontation, which could leave them unable to have children or to care for the ones they’ve already had. However, in women’s self-protectively not quite saying what they mean, they trade off being understood—especially by men.

Making matters worse, research by evolutionary psychologists Martie Haselton and David Buss

on the “sexual overperception bias” in men suggests that the male mind evolved to be a bit dense to a woman’s signals that she isn’t interested. Basically, men seem evolutionarily predisposed to make errors in judgment in whether to pursue or keep pursuing a woman— erring in whichever way would be least costly to their mating interests.

So, for example, you might eventually forgive this guy for all the tacky come-ons, but his genes won’t if they miss that vagina-shaped bus into future generations.

In other words, in giving this guy “subtle hints,” you aren’t being polite—you’re being wildly ineffective. Yank off the marshmallow fluff and tell him: “I need you to kill all the sex talk. Immediately.

And yes, this includes requests for naked selfies.” Be prepared to need to repeat yourself. If he really is a friend, he’ll continue being one.

Eau gag me I love how my boyfriend smells, but I hate his new cologne. The smell literally makes me queasy.

Is it even my place to ask him to stop wearing it? How do I tell him I don’t like it without it being mean?

Unfortunately, it seems that his cologne and your immune system are poorly matched.

Biologist August Hammerli and his colleagues find that a person’s fragrance preferences correlate with their particular set of infectious, intruder-tracking genes, called the “major histocompatibility complex.”

So, it isn’t that you think he’s an idiot with bad taste; it’s that your, I dunno, great-great-grandma got it on with some hot peasant with the “verbena smells like dead, rotting chickens” gene.

The science is your way in: “Sadly, your cologne does not play well with my genes.” Cushion the blow with something sweet, like, “I know you love it, and I wish I loved it, too.” Suggest you shop together for a new cologne for him (ideally something that makes you want to get naked). Ω

The juice comparison Sooner or later, all of us raging Trumpophobes will arrive at the same place, the same question.

“How,” we will ask, “is Trump like O.J.?”

Remember how, after about a month into O.J.’s trial, we all knew who killed Ron and Nicole? Well, most of us. It wasn’t a real tough call. All that remained to be hammered out was the human story, the story of the lawyers, the cops, the jury and the judge, and how it would all conclude. Pretty shockingly, as I recall.

I’ve got pretty much the same feeling now about Trump and Russia. We’ve been getting steady tidbits of Twitlerian coverups, mischief, skullduggery—all of which have been bonded together by a stunning parade of lies, lies, lies for about eight months.

We’ve seen how Trump has been schmoozing with Russian money, leaders and oligarchs for the

last five to seven years. And now, we’ve finally seen how the Trump campaign eagerly sought and accepted Russian assistance, a revelation that instantly exposed their denials of collusion as yet another barrage of lies.

We’ve also seen that more than one Russian intelligence officer dropped sneaky, prescient hints during the spring of ’16 about how Russia was now ready to give a little hot foot to arrogant America and—nudge, nudge, wink, wink—it’s gonna be a good one. We’ve seen for weeks how Trump and his lackeys, minions and sycophants (one year ago, Kellyanne Conjob was working for Ted F. Cruz!) are utterly defenseless in the face of a furious and relentless media, how all they can do is prop up their precious base of MAGAns with howls of Fake News! And that, now, Trump has blown on that particular

trumpet so much it’s utterly worthless, its spit valve clogged beyond repair. Ever hear the story of the boy who cried wolf, Dum Dum? We all know by now that they are, the lot of them, guilty as sin, as guilty as fucking O.J. The only thing we don’t know at this time is how yuge this outlandish conspiracy truly is. Does this web of espionage and treasonous bullshit include McConnell?

Ryan? Who would be surprised?

Who would dare to be shocked?

But no more talk of coincidences. No more talk of “benefit of the doubt.” We’re so far past those courtesies it’s literally not funny. The NYT, WaPo, et al will merrily continue to pound nail after nail into Dum Dum’s coffin over the next few months, until Mr. Mueller finally gets around to soaking that foul box in gasoline and dropping the match.
