Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review. I’m pleased to tell you that 95-Word Fiction entries are pouring in every day. We don’t actually read them until after the contest closes (9:01 a.m., Jan. 11) and the entries have been compiled in a document, sans names.

But, as they come in, I may catch the first line of one. It’s fun, like a teaser—though in some cases I recognize entries I’ve read in years past. Anyway, keep them coming!

If you saw my letter here last week, you may have noticed that I mentioned prizes that may possibly be awarded to 95-Word Fiction entrants. In the promo for this contest, it notes that those prizes are the possibility of earning bragging rights and the chance to have your name, and maybe even photo, published when the issue prints on Jan. 25. I mean, just so you know, we’re not talking prizes in the tangible sense, OK? New Year’s Eve is coming up pretty quickly, and I can’t believe the number of things that will be going on here in the Truckee Meadows and in Lake Tahoe, Carson City and Virginia City. If you’re wondering what to do, flip to page 30 and check out the New Year’s Eve calendar page. Our awesome, talented Calendar editor, Kelley Lang, puts this thing together every year—scouring listings from around the region to provide you with a comprehensive list of ways to ring in the New Year.

I hope 2018 is a really good one for all of you. And I’m feeling the holiday spirit, so I’ll go ahead and make a broad request. Know when to play it safe. After you’ve had a few drinks on Dec. 31, play it safe.

Don’t drive. When you’re working on your 95-Word Fiction entries, don’t play it safe. Maybe have a few drinks.

Trump apparently stated earlier this year that the Russia investigation was like a cloud hanging over his administration.

Well, that cloud is now producing thunder and lightning in the form of indictments and guilty pleas. It will only intensify from here. Rule of law-loving Americans should prepare for what comes next, an inevitable effort by the president to fire Mueller and put an end to the Russia investigation.

I believe in Mueller, but I do not depend on him to protect our democracy. That is my job as an American citizen. If Trump tries to fire Mueller, I’m hitting the streets with peaceful protest. The Russia investigation must be protected, the truth must come to light, and justice must be done.

Hats off to Bruce Van Dyke. For over a year he has penned a weekly column focusing on America’s #1 Embarrassment: Donald Trump. An amazing feat. If we all had Mr. Van Dyke’s laser focus and keen abilities, we would have a president of whom we all could be proud. Please don’t flag as I’m looking forward to another similar year of effort.

Trump II Hey, Trump voters. I suppose you really think this tax scam the Republicans are working on is going to help you. If you have been listening, their aim is to eliminate the inheritance tax, the alternative minimum tax, and reduce the upper tax bracket as well as the corporate tax rate.

Now, remember you hate deficit spending—or so you say. This measure will add 1.5 trillion to the debt. Huh! To do this you either cut spending or borrow.

So when the United States is broke, you same pikers will try to cut Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, ag subsidies, disaster relief, all programs that help Americans.

This huge tax cut will only benefit the multinationals and mega-wealthy who apparently are not wealthy enough. Is America ready to return to the middle ages and fiefdoms? Pick your lord—Bezos, Koch, Ivanka, Murdoch, Putin.

I’m a constant/frequent devotee of Sierra Hot Springs (SHS), just east of Sierraville in Sierra County. I live in Truckee and I try to get to SHS at least twice a week throughout the year.

Earlier this fall the County of Sierra spent who knows how many tens of thousand of dollars of tax money to redo the dirt road into SHS. The crews spent weeks tearing up and grading the old dirt road surface and then laying down and compacting hundreds—maybe thousands—of tons of new gravel and dirt.

As a retired civil engineer I watched in laughing disgust at that pathetic effort knowing full well that in short order cars traveling over that new surface that lacks any bonding agents would engender ripples—much like those in a stream bed—and that those ripples (aka washboard effect) would start unraveling the new materials laid down and potholes would develop rapidly. Well, I was right and now that new road is as bad as the old road, rife with tire-popping, suspension-breaking potholes!!

If I was a taxpaying resident of Sierra County I’d be livid and asking a lot of

Bring back the real arch The Reno Arch is in the news. There is a debate over whether it should remain neon or go to LED. The city council has voted for a new color scheme.

We’d like to cut through how to tinker with the current arch with an entirely different suggestion: Take it down and put the original Reno arch back.

The 1963 decision to take the original arch down was a mistake. It was sold to the public as a more modern approach, just as one of the original ideas for naming the Pioneer Center was to call it the Apollo Center, after the then-current moon landing project, and just as LED lighting today is supposed to be more modern than neon. Sometimes we confuse for progress ideas which are really only change.

But what the city got was the second Reno arch, known informally as the Jetsons arch. It was never wildly popular and wore out its welcome fast. But it hung on for years, no one in authority willing to say out loud what so many felt, that it had been a mistake to replace the original, that its replacement rapidly became dated like modernist 1960s living room

furniture. It was replaced after 23 years. The original arch had been in place for 40 years.

The third arch, installed in 1987, had a basic design flaw—it resembled the casinos’ signs behind it, with the result that it blends into its backdrop instead of standing out, as the original arch did.

The original arch was built in 1926 as part of the Transcontinental Highway Exposition in Reno, for which Idlewild Park was created. After being removed in 1963, the arch drifted around town—to Idlewild Park, then Paradise Park, then into storage, now at the Harrah’s Auto Museum.

The third arch has been in place for 30 years and it can hardly be described as beloved. It is adequate, it does the job, but not much more.

The original arch, by contrast, is a retro design in a time when retro is in, and the simple fact of it being returned to its home would alone bring wide publicity and attention to the city. Ω

Hear that backfire?

Women found their voice in 2017 and just like that, our world shifted. The workplace seems a lot safer for women as the chances of being taken seriously when reporting sexual harassment have increased dramatically. No one is naïve enough to think all harassment will cease, but public humiliation and possible career-ending consequences will serve as powerful deterrents to entitled men who view women as prey.

Meanwhile, the news is full of allegations of men using power or position to harass, intimidate or sexually assault women in the workplace or in political settings. The variety of accusations is mind-boggling from the classic “hitting on an employee” (U.S. Rep. Ruben Kihuen of Nevada) to serial harasser (former Clark County senator Mark Manendo) to the bizarre and disturbing actions of men like Rep. Trent Franks of Arizona, who pressured staffers to have his baby, or 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Alex Kozinski who brought female subordinates into his chambers to view pornography to determine if the images aroused them.

Then there’s the alleged criminality of people like Harvey Weinstein, now accused of assaulting multiple women and subjecting countless others to disgusting acts of harassment. Many other men have teetered close to the line between harassment and assault, despite the standard response of “I’m sorry if I offended anyone by my behavior.”

All of these men have faced humiliating public censure, with many resigning in disgrace, unlike our President, Donald Trump, who has admitted his sexual aggression on tape (despite claiming later that perhaps the voice on the video was not his). And even Trump may ultimately face consequences, although his immense ego won’t allow him to admit it’s possible for him to wrong others.

While Trump may escape accountability for his actions, the backlash may doom his legislative success in 2018. He already lost the Senate seat in Alabama when Roy Moore, credibly accused of targeting underage girls to meet his sexual desires, was narrowly defeated thanks to increased

Democratic turnout, particularly among African-American women.

Last year’s Women’s March the day after Trump’s inauguration heralded the beginning of an explosion in female candidates for office. The Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers reports more women are running for office than ever before, motivated by their anger at President Trump and Republicans who care more about power than personal integrity.

According to a recent story in the New York Times, in the run-up to the 2016 election, 1,000 women contacted Emily’s List (a group dedicated to electing pro-choice women) about running for office or getting involved in campaigns. Since the 2016 election, more than 22,000 women have done the same. The carelessness of Republicans in proceeding with an anti-health care agenda, including a lack of concern about protecting access to contraceptives and other prevention services guaranteed by the Affordable Care Act, has empowered women to take control of their destinies at the ballot box.

According to Rutgers, the surge of women candidates is bipartisan, with 291 Democratics and 63 Republicans already declared for House seats, four times the number of women challenging House incumbents two years ago at this time. The number of female candidates for the Senate has almost doubled, with two Democrats declaring their intentions to run and 13 Republicans, about 10 times the number of women who ran in 2012 and 2014.

If Virginia and Alabama portend the future, women voters will continue to translate their anger into action, and many more women will be elected in 2018. In Nevada, we may elect the first female governor in our state’s history and our second female U.S. senator. What a legacy for President Trump. Ω

Federalism on trial Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, along with his sons, Ammon and Ryan, and co-defendant Ryan Payne, are on trial in Las Vegas for their role in the April 2014 Bunkerville, Nevada standoff against the federal government for nonpayment of federal grazing fees.

The Bundy family’s Mormon belief underlies their protest. The Book of Mormon tells of heroes like Nephi and Captain Moroni who stood up to tyranny.

In the late 1850s President Buchanan declared the Mormon church in rebellion against the United States, and he dispatched federal troops to Utah. The Utah War is the only time the United States government has attacked an organized religion.

The Bundy family is today’s lightning rod for the decades-long rebellion over federal ownership of most of the Western lands. The Bundy militia stood up to the world’s most powerful nation-state, in armed confrontation, to stop a judicially authorized seizure of property.

If the federal government convinces the jury to convict the Bundys, they will convict individual Americans not just for violations of statute but for religious and political beliefs and freedom of expression. No shots were fired. No one was hurt or killed in the standoff.

Perhaps if Bundy’s militia had simply laid down in front of the cowboys who came to herd off their cattle they would inspire more sympathy. However, America was not founded by Gandhi, but by rednecks with guns and bibles who fought an empire for what they believed was rightfully theirs.

U.S. District Judge Gloria Navarro was willing to let Cliven Bundy out of prison for the trial. Bundy refused her offer, preferring to appear in court in prison orange to show he is a political prisoner. The federal government controls about 85 percent of Nevada and more than 60 percent of Utah, Idaho and Alaska.

Only a few states east of the Mississippi (Michigan, Florida, New Hampshire)

have as much as 10 percent of their land controlled by the feds. The original colonies relinquished their public lands to the federal government.

President Trump went to Utah Dec. 4 to roll back President Obama’s executive order and release over two million acres taken under the federal Antiquities Act. Grand Staircase Escalante and Bears Ears National Monuments land, taken over the strenuous objection of the Utah Legislature, will be dramatically slashed. Trump loudly proclaimed he was protecting states rights, but like all politicians, and more so than most, the President revealed himself to be a showman who knows how to put on a photo op. Trump’s executive order overriding Obama’s executive order is cosmetic at best. He is merely transferring federal control of the monuments from the National Park Service back to the Bureau of Land Management and the National Forest Service. Yes, it will make it easier for Utah to allow

commercial and recreational exploitation of Grand Escalante, but it does not address the constitutional questions Cliven Bundy is raising at trial.

To do that, Trump would have to transfer ownership to Utah, or simply sell off the land, perhaps to education trusts, as was the traditional process of admitting a territory as a state. Native Americans complained they could not access their ancestral lands on Bears Ears, but Trump stopped short of transferring the land to tribal control. All the Great Orange did was return the land to its status quo federal control.

On Nov. 11 Judge Navarro indicated she might declare a mistrial due to defense motions arguing federal prosecutors have not turned over all the evidence to the defense. Juries have been acquitting or declaring mistrial in almost every trial of Bundy’s militia. Yet the feds refuse to listen to the people and continue to pursue criminal charges. Ω

CAAW nAme dropped

U.S. Sen. Dean Heller of Nevada has worked hard to put a stop to net neutrality.

The Committee to Aid Abused Women (CAAW) has changed its name to the Domestic Violence Resource Center.

Men’s rights activists have criticized the name for years.

A letter to donors from the organization reads in part, “We entered into the name change project because we felt that our 40th anniversary year was a good time to develop a name that more aptly describes the services that we currently provide in our community. This project was informed by the feedback from clients, donors, staff, board and other constituents who have a vested interest in helping ensure that we provide the best services and programs for all whom we serve.” It said Julia Jones and KPS3—a public relations firm—guided the process.

CAAW was formed in a Washoe Valley gathering of feminist leaders in 1977. After being quartered in a bedroom and a least two different office locations, the group succeeded in purchasing its current headquarters on Vassar Street. It also has shelter facilities around the valley.

In 2004, responding to some political campaign comments, CAAW director and founder Joni Kaiser told us, “Nobody goes around telling the Boy Scouts to change their name, or the YMCA … It’s only because it’s women that it’s an issue.”

Former CAAW staffer Rebecca Thomas agreed: “You don’t hear candidates talking this way about children’s issues” (“Disorder in the Family Court.” RN&R, Aug. 5, 2004).

A financial contributor to CAAW told us this week that in discussions of possible changes that she participated in during years past, there was agreement that women be in the name somewhere, because otherwise the organization would play into the myth of men’s rights groups that women commit domestic violence with the same frequency as men.

Another former staffer said the new name is less memorable and that it’s “just like our herstory never existed.”

Foreboding At a Nov. 21 meeting, Nye County Commissioner Butch Borasky said he suspected that brothel owner Dennis Hof, Nye County Republican chair Joe Burdzinski, and Don Cox—spouse of Commissioner Donna Cox—“might have my number.”

To explain what he meant by that, he then said, “If I should disappear, hit in the head with a brick, get run off the road, or any other function to take my life away from me, then I would ask that they talk to Mr. Dennis Hof, Mr. Don Cox, and Mr. Joe Burdzinski, of the so-called Nye County Republican Central Committee. And I will put that in writing to all of the departments, all of sheriffs, and a whole bunch of other agencies, because it’s just a gut feeling, but when I get them, they are usually right, so happy Thanksgiving.”

Hof has hired Reno lawyer David Houston to explore a lawsuit against Borasky over the comments.

Borasky made reference to incidents in Nye County history and said he had been reading The Nye County Brothel Wars (Simon and Shuster, 1985), an account by Jeanie Kasindorf of the 1978 torching of the Chicken Ranch Brothel and subsequent federal investigation of corruption in the county.

Heller wins one Net neutrality repealed net neutrality, a federal policy requiring that all internet users be treated the same, has been revoked by the Federal Trade Commission in a 3-to-2 vote, an action long urged by U.S. Sen. Dean Heller. Internet service providers (ISPs) are now free to slow or speed traffic on the internet to assist or hamper operations in which they have an interest, raising consumer costs in the process.

Net neutrality was adopted by the FCC during the Obama administration to require ISPs to treat all web traffic the same. Supporters say it keeps the internet open and information travels freely without interference by broadband providers.

Under neutrality, ISPs thus function like inert transmission lines, unable to alter the speed or block access to particular websites and thus unable to fiddle with content or charge more for higher speeds.

Heller has pushed aggressively for a corporate-friendly internet. In a Nov. 9, 2011 statement, he said, “Net neutrality goes against years of sound internet policy, led by both Democrats and Republicans, to leave the internet virtually unregulated that has ushered in an era of wonderful innovation and billions in private investment in infrastructure.”

Heller, according to the Center for

Responsive Politics, accepted $372,250 from telecommunications contributors over the course of his congressional career, and $93,500 in 2016 alone.

At the Register website, Kieren McCarthy wrote the country is entering “a world where the real heroes—corporations—can finally act unimpeded.

In 2014, after Barack Obama championed net neutrality, Heller said, “The President’s approach takes dynamic technology and turns it into another utility like electricity and water.

And just like power and water, today’s internet would become stagnant instead of remaining vibrant.”

He did not explain what is stagnant about water and power markets.

By contrast, net neutrality supporters say the internet should be regulated like a utility.

“We should treat the Internet as the public utility that it is—like water,

telephones and electricity,” said a statement signed by the long distance service Credo.

Obama argued that regulation kept corporate control away from the internet: “There are no gatekeepers deciding which sites you get to access. There are no toll roads on the information superhighway. This set of principles, the idea of net neutrality, has unleashed the power of the Internet and given innovators the chance to thrive. Abandoning these principles would threaten to end the Internet as we know it.”

In an appearance on Yahoo Finance, media executive Barry Diller said, “This internet thing is a total accident of history—never happened before. You push a button, you publish to everyone.

OK. In the past, at the beginning of communications, there’s always been someone between you creating something and the person receiving it—a distributor, some sort of organizer. ... If you change that and put a distributor’s discrimination in the middle of it, we’ll do what every distributor since the beginning of time has done, has said, ‘My wires are valuable. If you want to get across them you’re going to pay me a toll,’ and that toll will be either dollars or, more likely, it’ll be, ‘Give me most of your profit.’”

Opponents say no one can point to problems before net neutrality was adopted. “[W]hy is it that the internet was able to grow and operate so successfully from its creation all the way until 2015 without any of these dire problems?” wrote Jesse Hathaway on the Fox News site.

In this newspaper, columnist Brendan Trainor wrote last week, “Private market monopolies are extremely hard to sustain against new competition. Net neutralists cannot point to real world examples.”

Those kind of commentaries have enraged supporters of consumer protections because they have sent such examples to D.C. and don’t understand why their comments have not stopped such claims. In her dissent at the vote, Commissioner Mignon Clyburn argued the reason is that the FCC record has, in effect, been tampered with by the GOP majority, which kept those bad examples out of it.

“It is abundantly clear why we see so much bad process with this item—because the fix was already in.

There is no real mention of the thousands of net neutrality complaints filed by

A local clinic administers Ketamine, long used as a party drug and hospital anesthetic, as a remedy for depression and pain.

agents and pain relief as it does not depress breathing or lower blood pressure and does not require expensive patient-monitoring equipment.” The file goes on to say that it’s rare for patients or abusers to overdose—though still possible. Today it’s widely used in emergency rooms and surgery centers, to put patients under before other treatments.

The founders of Sierra Ketamine Clinics, Dr. Brett Frey and Dr. Robert Watson, spend a lot of their time in a hospital. Frey is an emergency physician at Renown Health Systems in Reno, and Watson is a surgeon there. Frey said that he observed the profound effects of low-dose ketamine infusions in the ER as an anesthetic and recounted many instances of people receiving relief from neuropathic pain. Over the last three years, he’s researched different uses and applications of ketamine, specifically for behavioral health issues, and shared his findings with Watson.

“We’re friends outside of the work environment,” said Watson.

“Brett sharing this information with me got me inspired,” he said.

“And so, when he brought up the idea of a ketamine clinic, there is obviously this major void in the community, and just whatever makes you want to be a doctor, you just want to help. It was just a natural development.”

The doctors found an office location, outfitted their comfy infusion rooms, hired staff and contracted with pharmaceutical companies.

Watson said they observed a couple of ketamine clinics in San Antonio, Texas in the process. On Sept. 5, Sierra Ketamine Clinics opened its doors, ready to take on pain and suffering in many forms, including what the WHO has called the number one cause of disability in the world—depression.

Amid the business complexes, parking lots and subtle landscaping in South Reno, the South Reno Medical Plaza occupies a boxy set of buildings. On the second floor, past dentists’ offices and testing labs, there’s a medical office that is doing something different than anywhere else in the region. This place is Sierra Ketamine Clinics.

It’s a ketamine infusion center where patients are treated for major depression, mood disorders, chronic pain and substance abuse, among other conditions.

You may have heard of ketamine being used as a party drug—and you may have heard of a “K-hole,” a state caused by a large dose, which can cause vivid hallucinations, memory loss or extreme levels of dissociation.

The 2012 Ketamine episode of National Geographic’s Drugs Inc. series is a good source for more details. It examines how ketamine’s hallucinogenic properties lower users’ inhibitions as they dance to techno music. They appear euphoric, until they take too much, after which they appear to cognitively check out and drool on themselves like vacant-eyed zombies for the remainder of night.

This is that drug.

On the other side of the coin, ketamine has been on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines since 1985. In hospitals, it’s administered intravenously as an anesthetic, with drip amounts determined by a patient’s weight. The WHO has deemed it relatively inexpensive, available and safe.

Ketamine has a pretty noble history. Not long after its approval for human use in 1970, it was used as an anesthetic on the battlefields of the Vietnam War. A WHO fact file from 2016 on ketamine states, “Ketamine is safer to administer than other types of anesthetic

Physician assisted dissociation The calm waiting room and hallways at Sierra Ketamine Clinics have the sterile feel of a dentist’s office, as opposed to the warmth of a family therapist’s. The infusion rooms have nice leather chairs, and the small staff is personable with patients.

The doctors review each patient’s medical history and have patients fill out prescreening worksheets to determine whether their symptoms—emotional or physical—make them an appropriate candidate for ketamine infusions. Overall physical wellness is considered, too.

Once confirmed, the patient schedules an induction series, four treatments over the course of two weeks. The treatments are 40-minute IV infusions. Patients hang out in a leather easy chair and are encouraged to listen to mood-setting music. The lights are turned off, and the curtains are closed. It usually takes about five minutes for the drugs to take hold.

Some patients report instant relief from their pain.

an alternative to ssris Ketamine for non-hospital therapeutic uses is gaining a foothold.

The advocacy website ketaminesavedme.com lists 75 clinics in the United States—with a disclaimer stating that the site does not vet the legitimacy of each listing.

What’s making such a buzz in the medical community is that the ketamine reacts differently than most other drugs that doctors have, for decades, been prescribing to people for depression and mood disorders.

The current go-to antidepressants are called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs—Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa and dozens more. Here’s what they do: In your brain, molecules of the hormone serotonin move between the synapses that are meant to regulate mood, appetite and sleep. Sometimes, those serotonin molecules go to waste or are destroyed by other chemicals, and this depletion leaves the brain feeling the horrible symptoms of depression. The theory is that SSRI block the part of the brain’s synapses that waste or destroy serotonin, so the usual serotonin levels can fill up in the brain, allowing normal cognitive function to return.

The National Center for Biotechnology Information reports the most common side effects associated with SSRIs are nausea, insomnia and sexual dysfunction. Therein lies the gripe against these kinds of antidepressants—the side effects often kick in before the serotonin levels can recover to normal function.

Evan Miller, a certified alcohol and drug-counselor intern at Quest Counseling and Consulting in Reno said, “A lot of the times people with really severe mental health disorders will have tried lots and lots of these drugs, and they will feel frustrated by it.”

Miller explained how his clients can suffer through the trial and error of cycling or combining antidepressants, in search of a chemical strategy that’s effective and tolerable. The process may take weeks. It may take years.

With the help of SSRIs and other antidepressants, many people diagnosed with depression begin to feel better. In the largest and longest study ever conducted to evaluate depression treatment, the National Institute of Mental Health found that nearly 50 percent of participants became symptom free after switching their medications only twice. But, the odds of beating depression are diminished with every additional treatment strategy needed.

Whether in a clinical setting with an IV or on the couch experimenting with what the DEA calls a “schedule III controlled substance,” users experience a similar kind of euphoria. Ketamine immediately acts on neurotransmitters called NMDA glutamate receptors. These are the same receptors that PCP, nitrous oxide and other dissociative hallucinogens interact with. However, at the levels served up at Sierra Ketamine Clinics, out-of-body experiences and hallucinations aren’t likely. That’s not to say a psychotropic state doesn’t occur, however.

“The patients often say it’s surreal, like a dream,” said Frey.

He continued that some patients report detachment from reality, or, in some cases, feeling closer to their higher power.

On a podcast episode of the Joe Rogan Experience—a fair enough place to learn about drugs without trying them—Neal Brennan, co-creator of Chappelle’s Show and a self-proclaimed “depression correspondent,” described his ketamine-infusion experience as floating through a fantasy world that felt like a mix between “It’s A Small World After All” and the Korova Milk Bar in A Clockwork Orange.

“I couldn’t get over the fact this was happening in a doctor’s office—just like a regular fucking doctor’s office,” he told the audience. “Like, literally, waiting room with other physicians and their patients, old wierdos, shitty magazines, and you go in and trip your fucking head off.”

One local patient who was—26-year-old Samantha Cobb from Gardnerville—said she simply falls asleep a few minutes into the infusion. Deep relaxation is encouraged at SKC. We’ll get back to her story in a bit.

The study concluded that there’s a need for a better understanding of how different people respond to different depression treatments.

new use for an old drug That SSRI and antidepressant study occurred back in 2006. Since then, not much progress has come in the way of mental-health solutions for mood disorders—apart from this new ketamine treatment that has popped up in cities across the country.

Ketamine brings faster relief than SSRIs and other antidepressants, sometimes subduing depressive thoughts in a matter of hours, which could make all the difference in severe cases, like when a patient is suicidal.

Although ketamine is an FDA-approved anesthetic, its recoded history as a mood-stabilizer is short. At Sierra Ketamine Clinics, ketamine isn’t being used as a surgical anesthetic, but to treat conditions like chronic pain, major depression, PTSD, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD and substance use disorder.

It’s not perfectly clear what long-term use of ketamine may offer, for good or for bad.

Administering a drug for something other than it’s intended purpose might sound like a precarious disregard for liability, but according to the FDA, once a drug is approved, healthcare providers may prescribe the drug for an unapproved use if they’ve deemed that it is medically appropriate for their patient.

So, Frey and Watson are legally offering a new use for an old drug based on their discretion.

Encouraging off-label uses for drugs turns illegal when the drug manufacturers directly promote their drug for things other than what the FDA condoned. An example is the $2.2 billion settlement Johnson & Johnson paid in 2013 for marketing a

schizophrenia drug to subdue elderly people who had become confused, agitated or hostile. The drug was also promoted as a safe treatment for disorders like ADHD and OCD in children. In a conference announcing the criminal misdemeanor, Obama’s Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. censured the company for “recklessly putting at risk the health of some of the most vulnerable members of our society—including young children, the elderly and the disabled.”

Indictments like that sometimes earn pharmaceutical companies the reputations as greedy masters of deception.

But their products still require rigorous scientific testing over long periods of time before the FDA stamps them for widespread use, as is the case for ketamine. Of course, the major pharmaceutical companies are fast on track to go to market with something they can definitively call, “The first major breakthrough in depression treatment in decades.” At least two companies—Johnson & Johnson and Allergan—have ketamine in late-stage clinical trials.

Frey and Watson are closely following this movement right now. When the major companies bring ketamine to the mainstream, it will mean big changes for small practices like Sierra Ketamine Clinics, including different ways to ingest the drug without an IV—perhaps nasally or sublingually. Ketamine, which is already considered a relatively inexpensive drug, will also likely become much cheaper.

“We understand as a clinic we may have short life span of three to five years,” said Frey. “We don’t know what that looks like.” If ketamine is easily consumed and widely prescribed by psychiatrists, infusion treatment centers across the country may have to close their doors.

A pAtient’s perspective When Samantha Cobb was in the Air Force, repeated physical training in combat gear left her with fractures in both shins. The fractures on her left shin healed improperly, and she said that a government doctor misdiagnosed the pain as “compartment syndrome.” She underwent a test that involved administering 16 spring-loaded needles into her shin, intended to measure the pressure in the leg. Instead, the needles went into deep tissue muscles, breaking open an artery, piercing a tendon and a skewering a grouping of nerves, she said.

The damage to her nerves resulted in a condition known as complex regional pain syndrome or CRPS. “It’s a constantly burning kind of pain, and anything that touches it from a blanket or putting on pants is excruciating,” said Cobb. Since her disability discharge from the military four years ago, she’s walked with crutches and managed her pain with oxycodone.

Cobb is part of CRPS support groups on Facebook. That’s where she first heard about ketamine infusion therapy. She and her doctor, Nicholas Tannous, MD, of the Carson Tahoe Pain Institute, began keeping an eye out for ketamine clinics. He made sure she acknowledged that a new treatment could present unknown side effects or long-term health concerns.

When Sierra Ketamine Clinics opened, Cobb decided the pain wasn’t worth deliberating over anymore. The only hurdle was the cost. Because of its status with the FDA, insurance companies don’t cover ketamine infusion therapy. At SKC, the initial four treatments cost $2,000.

“We were able to scrape up the money for the first four, and [we said] we’ll see if it’s effective or not, and we’ll worry about it

from there,” said Cobb. “But it was extremely effective. So, you know, I’m going to keep trying to find the money.” Her family has been helping with payments.

After her second ketamine infusion, she was off the crutches.

Now Cobb works part time as a gymnastics coach at Silver State Gymnastics where she was a competitive gymnast throughout her childhood. She’d spent the summer coaching sitting down, unable to spot her students or do much physically.

Since her ketamine treatment, she’s back on her feet, leading the choreography. She calls this “her second chance at life.”

Just the K Sierra Ketamine Clinics is fine-tuned to accomplish one task for patients—administering a safe, controlled intravenous infusion of ketamine. With no formal psychiatric or psychological tutelage, the doctors there prefer—but do not require—their patients also be working with a counselor. Their website claims free referral services to pain management, psychiatry and psychological affiliates and primary care providers.

“We’re not really equipped for that,” said Watson “We basically counsel on the importance of those other things, but when they leave, it’s pretty much up to them.”

“What people do between treatments is as important as the treatments themselves,” said Frey. “We view this as a leverage point in someone’s life. This could be a super highly effective therapy, but if they don’t change some other things they’re doing in terms of diet, exercise, staying away from bad environments, hanging around the right people that help you stay positive, doing mindfulness resilience exercises—those are all incredibly important.” Ω

Reno residents with ties to other countries talk about their favorite foods—and where to get them locally

O

n my first day in Australia as a high-school exchange student, I couldn’t imagine how an entire country could be so nuts over stout little jars of goopy, black spread. Children sang the TV jingle—“We’re happy little Vegemites as bright as bright can be”—like it was the second national anthem.

My first bite tasted like what it was—a sticky, salty, slightly bitter yeast extract that’s a byproduct of beer making. As a teen in a new country though, I had an enthusiastic when-in-Rome stance, and I set out to acquire a taste for most things Australian.

Within a few weeks, I could barely imagine breakfast without a thin smear of the stuff. By then, it tasted like earthy perfection atop my buttered toast, alongside a soft-boiled egg.

Some foods, like Vegemite, are acquired tastes. Others are easy to love at first bite. Either way, there’s something about familiar foods that taste like home—or, at times, a second home. And sometimes a new food habit can be as satisfying as one you picked up in your grandma’s kitchen. To that effect, Reno dwellers shared their favorite foods from other countries, plus advice on which specialty shops or popular chain stores stock them.

Big in Japan Miya Hannan migrated to the U.S. from Japan, spent 17 years in San Diego and San Francisco, and landed in town about a year ago to head up an art program at the University of Nevada, Reno.

She’s found that Japanese ingredients aren’t as readily available in Reno as in her two adopted Californian cities, but one essential condiment, natto, is in at least one local freezer section.

Natto is made of soybeans fermented with Bacillus subtilis, which has long been used in some cultures as a digestive aid. The bacteria can make the natto stringy and stretchy. To conjure a reasonably close mental image, picture the kind of strings that form when you’re making Rice Krispies treats and you pull off a chunk of the melty, marshmallow-cereal conglomeration before it solidifies. Natto isn’t sweet though—its aroma is often called “cheese-like,” and it tends to elicit strong reactions. There are countless YouTube videos of Westerners trying it and making funny faces.

In Japan, though, it’s a ubiquitous comfort food prized for its protein, vitamin and mineral content.

Traditionally, natto is mixed with soy sauce and eaten on rice.

After years in the U.S., Hannan has Americanized her natto habits.

She spreads her daily serving on a slice of bread.

BReakfast “Banana” Ruby Barrientos is the youngest of five children in a family from El Salvador, the only one among her siblings born in the U.S. “Plantains are one of my favorite things,” she said. They’re a savory, starchy version of bananas, popular in the Caribbean and Central America.

Plátanos fritos—fried plantains—are especially popular, and for Barrientos, they were a staple of childhood.

“It was a weekend thing,” she said. “I remember on the weekends, as a kid, my dad would cook that. It was my favorite thing. …

That’s just a popular breakfast. You can eat it at any time, but it’s one of the traditional breakfasts.” It’s often served alongside refried beans and crema, a thickened cream, and sometimes fried eggs.

“I make them every now and then. I usually like to go to my mom’s or aunt’s, and they make them,” Barrientos said. “My mom will just fry them in the pan with oil, and then she’ll put sugar on it.”

“It takes me back to being a young kid, having that,” she said.

Fresh plantains are widely available in Latino grocery stores and some chain markets such as Winco. One source that Barrientos and her relatives frequent for plantains and a range of Central American groceries is Tapachulteca Mini Market.

“I grew up with a French-obsessed mother from Holland and a French dad, went to a French school in Washington D.C., and went to college in France,” said Nico Colombant, a journalism instructor at UNR. He’s also worked as a news reporter in a few different African countries, and wherever he’s lived, he’s always been on the lookout for the best local version of the French baguette.

“That’s our rice, our staple food from France,” he said. The iconic stick of bread plays an important role in French culture. Its price is regulated, and the bakers who make it think of themselves as artisans. The president even has an official baguette maker.

And while baguettes are easy to find stateside, the ones that taste truly French are more elusive. Colombant described a perfect specimen: “hardest on the outside and very soft and airy on the inside.”

For Francophile foodies in Northern Nevada, there’s a glimmer of hope—and, for most of Reno, it’s within easy reach. The Nob Hill baguette at Raley’s is a reasonable approximation, according to Colombant.

The Raley’s baguette doesn’t have quite the same crunchy crust and soft interior—but, he said, “I have a life hack that makes it better. …

“They have a terrific bread store,” she said.

One bread in particular that she recommends from there is the German pretzel.

In Germany, Porter noted, “A pretzel is something you pick up at the train station, on the streets—they sell them everywhere.”

Whole Foods’ are, “the closest I’ve ever tasted so far,” she said.

There are a few right ways to eat a pretzel. When Porter and her husband order them, she said, “He puts mustard on it, and I put butter on it, the German way.” She also advised that pretzels pair well with a glass of beer.

The University of Nevada, Reno offers a printmaking program that teaches techniques and concepts. Yet abruptly after graduation, students no longer have access to the on-campus lab and its equipment.

Former student Nathaniel Benjamin and a group of friends from the art department wanted to change that by making printmaking as accessible as possible to the entire Reno community. Laika Press, a non-profit print shop, opened its doors Dec. 15.

About six months ago, Benjamin sat down with his friends to plan out how they would start this project. He said that, as more friends went into the printmaking program, the program’s energy level rose.

With the help of the Holland Project’s Britt Curtis, Laika Press was able to acquire a space on Wells Avenue next to Magpie Coffee Roasters. The press shares the space with radio station KWNK so that both projects can split the financial burden, Curtis said.

“This crew is comprised of incredible artists,” said Curtis. “Some recent grads and some current students that need access themselves to create for their own practices but also get very clearly the need in the community for others to have access.”

Benjamin said there were already people in Reno doing their own printmaking, simply because they had their own private presses and the funds to purchase them. Print presses can cost upwards of a thousand dollars, a purchase that is often off the table for individual artists. Fortunately enough, Laika Press was able to purchase a press for community use at a UNR surplus sale for a reasonable cost.

“Collaboration is so much better than competition, said Benjamin. “It helps us all grow together and helps us all figure out new techniques, and it kind of gets us all in the same space, which makes a huge difference too.”

Laika Press seeks to educate people about the basics of printmaking in addition to hosting specialty workshops once a month. According to Benjamin, each instructor’s personal interests will be reflected in the workshops as they try to get people to explore different avenues within printmaking because there is so much that can be done with it. He said it’s not super complex, but the little details learned can make a huge difference. He wants people with no experience to come in, make quality prints and be satisfied with the results of their artwork.

With printmaking, it’s possible to make multiples of the same design.

“When you make a painting, you have one of that painting,” said Benjamin.

“You can make digital reproductions of it, but they’re not originals. But, when you make prints, the originals are every print you make.”

According to Benjamin, the goal is to create an awareness and an atmosphere around printmaking where local printmakers can meet and collaborate. Benjamin also mentioned that in the long term he’d want Laika Press to expand the influence of arts in Reno whether that means bringing artists into the city or just promoting Reno’s local artists.

Benjamin said Laika Press wants to be on the frontier of printmaking. That’s where the name came from anyway—the Soviet space dog who was one of the first living creatures to be sent into outer space. Ω

The Disaster Artist

Not sure if it’s The Last Jedi or The Fate of the Furious, but it’s a good eighth movie either way.

A bit forced In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we get our older Luke and Leia movie. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher get to do what Harrison Ford did in The Force Awakens by spending a little more time—in the case of Hamill, a lot more time—in their iconic roles.

Both stars shine in their frankly incredible opportunity to play in the Star Wars sandbox 40 years after the original’s release. When this film focuses on the saga of Luke and Rey, it is nothing short of epic. When the camera is fixed on the late Carrie Fisher, who gets more quality screen time than her glorified cameo in Force Awakens, it’s heartwarming and, yes, sad. The Leia stuff gets a little kooky at times, but I’m trying to make this a spoiler-free zone.

When writer-director Rian Johnson takes the action to the characters of Poe (Oscar Isaac), Finn (John Boyega) and a new character named Rose (Kelly Marie Tran), the film falters. Poe, so engaging in Force Awakens, seems underdeveloped here. While the Resistance fights an oddly prolonged and bizarre space battle against the First Order, Poe just whines a lot—to the point where you are actually happy when Leia smacks him across his head.

The film picks up where The Force Awakens left off, with Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Luke in a staredown. Rey is looking for tutelage, but Luke is in full hermit mode, wants nothing to do with that Jedi stuff anymore, and desires to be left alone with his alien milk. While on the island, Rey starts having some sort of psychic Force conversations with Kylo Ren a.k.a. Ben Solo (Adam Driver). Will Luke train Rey? Will Rey find out who her parents are? Will Adam Driver do obligatory partial nudity in this film? I’m not telling.

What I will tell you is that there’s too much going on in The Last Jedi, and a lot of it feels like filler. Besides the aforementioned, stalledout space battle, there’s a clunky sequence

in a casino that goes on far too long, a lot of distracting cameos, and new characters inhabited

by Laura Dern and Benicio del Toro, who bring close to nothing to the proceedings.

Am I overthinking this? Yeah, of course I am, but I’m a dude who has spent the last 40 years worshipping Star Wars. Anything you put up on the screen within a Star Wars production is going to have the likes of me—admittedly, somewhat of a loser—taking that shit apart. I’m saying some of this movie seems a little half baked, and also overstuffed. If there’s any kind of movie I want to be over two and a half hours long, it’s a Star Wars movie. But, at that length, it needs to be a really good Star Wars movie, not a so-so one. The Last Jedi is so-so.

I’m of two worlds when it comes to The Last Jedi. It’s part Best Star Wars Ever (Luke, Leia, Rey, Ben Solo) and part Worst Star Wars Ever (Poe, Finn, the girl with the flip hair, and just about any time Domhnall Gleeson speaks). I’m recommending it for the Luke and Leia goodness, Daisy Ridley’s continued greatness as Rey, and inspired moments of fun and humor. But, man oh man, it goes into “Jar Jar bad” territory a little too often for my tastes.

Johnson has been given his own, new Star Wars trilogy to work on, a saga supposedly away from the Skywalkers. I’m hoping the guy gives us something a little more balanced in the future.

He’s made great movies (Brick, Looper) and crap movies (The Brothers Bloom) in the past. The Last Jedi falls somewhere in between.

So, as Yoda would say, “A great Star Wars this is not. Like it just fine, I did, but there is a tremor of over indulgence in the Force. Be mindful of this for future times in edit bay, you must.”

One final note—Porgs are awesome. Ω

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

James Franco does Tommy Wiseau, director of The Room—the greatest bad film ever—a cinematic honor with this movie in much the same way Tim Burton glorified shlockmeister Ed Wood over 20 years ago.

Franco directs and stars as Tommy, complete with the awesome, long, vampire-black hair and chipmunk cheeks. He also nails the Wiseau mystery accent. For the first time in a movie, Franco costars with brother Dave, who gets one of his best roles yet as the also legendarily bad Greg Sestero, friend to Tommy and costar in The Room. The film starts in San Francisco, with Greg struggling to remember lines in a savagely bad acting class attempt at Waiting for Godot. Strange classmate Tommy lumbers onto the stage to butcher a scene from A Streetcar Named Desire, and a friendship is born. The two agree to work on scenes together, bond in their lousiness and, thanks to Wiseau’s strange and unexplained apparent wealth, move to Los Angeles to fulfill their dreams to become actors. After a stretch of unsuccessful auditions, the pair decide to make their own movie, and this is where the film really takes off. Fans of The Room will rejoice in hilarious recreations of such iconic moments as “You’re tearing me apart, Lisa!” and “Oh, hi Mark!” The Disaster Artist—which is actually based on the book The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, the Greatest Bad Movie Ever—is heartwarming for multiple reasons.

It’s fun to see a misfit make it, even though it’s in a roundabout sort of way, and it’s fun to see that accomplishment depicted by the Franco brothers. May this be the first of many future collaborations.

Lady Bird

Greta Gerwig makes her solo directorial debut with a semi-autobiographical look at her life growing up in Sacramento, California and she immediately establishes herself as a directing force to be reckoned with. Saoirise Ronan, who should’ve won an Oscar for Brooklyn, will likely get another chance for her turn as Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson, a Sacramento youth with an artistic yearning for the East Coast and some distance between her and her domineering mom (Laurie Metcalf). This is a coming-of-age story like no other thanks to the insightful writing and brisk directorial style of Gerwig, who makes Lady Bird’s story a consistently surprising one. Ronan’s Lady Bird is a rebel with a good heart, a theater geek who stinks at math, and an emotional rollercoaster. She also gets a lot of laughs, especially in her showdowns with Metcalf, who has never been better. Lucas Hedges, on a roll after Manchester By the Sea and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, is funny and sad as one of Lady Bird’s young love interests, while Odeya Rush is golden as Lady Bird’s best friend, Jenna. Tracy Letts is perfect as the nice dad dealing with warring factions in the household, while Timothy Chalamet (currently racking up awards for Call Me By Your Name) gets perhaps the biggest laughs as aloof other love interest, Kyle. This one is a triumph for Ronan and Gerwig, and, while it would never happen, I’d love to see a sequel about Lady Bird’s college years.

The Man Who Invented Christmas

In 1843, when Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol, folks were just getting into that thing we call the holidays, with stuff like Christmas trees and gift giving.

Dickens’s novel about a miserable miser named Ebenezer Scrooge, who transforms from an evil, greedy monster to a kind philanthropist throughout its five chapters, helped take the celebration of Christmas to a new level of tradition. The boldly titled The Man Who Invented Christmas spins an entertaining and clever take on how and why Dickens got the idea for the story that would change the world. Coming off a couple of flops after the success of his Oliver Twist, Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) is doing clumsy book tours to pay the bills. Desperate for a “hit,” he gets an idea for a Christmas book, one in which a greedy man is haunted by ghosts of the past,

present and future. The story is meant to be a cautionary yarn about the evils of selfishness, and perhaps less about the joys of Christmas and redemption. As Dickens gets further into his book—and his own psyche—the theme changes to one of hope, and his classic is born. Director Bharat Nalluri, working from a screenplay by Susan Coyne, based on the book

by Les Standiford, gets the unique opportunity to tell the making of A Christmas Carol while, in some ways, making yet another version of the famed story itself. The film features Dickens conferring with the fictional characters in his story as he creates them, so we get an Ebenezer Scrooge, this time played by the great Christopher Plummer. Of course, he winds up being perfect for the role.

Three Billboards Outside of ing, Missouri

This marks the third film—and the third masterpiece—for writer-director Martin McDonagh. It also marks another astonishing film achievement for Frances McDormand, who will bore into your chest cavity and do all kinds of crazy shit to your heart as Mildred, a justifiably pissed off mother who has a few issues with the cops in her town. It’s been five years since Mildred’s young daughter was raped and killed by unknown murderers, who finished their awful deed by burning her body. Mildred, who isn’t even close to getting over the tragedy, spies some old, dilapidated billboards on the way home and gets an idea. One meeting with a sloppy advertising agent (Caleb Landry Jones) later, and some guys are commissioned to put some alarmingly provocative signs up on those billboards. Woody Harrelson is first rate as the man being called out in those billboards for not finding the killers. Harrelson’s 2017 has been astoundingly good. Sam Rockwell gets the high-profile acting showcase he deserves as racist deputy Dixon. Rockwell’s Dixon, the town drunk and racist homophobe who has a thing for throwing people out of windows, undergoes a transformation that is a kind of movie miracle. McDonagh knows how to write a script that keeps you in it for every line. While the film is somewhat a murder mystery, the solving of the crime takes a back seat to watching these folks play off each other. There are scenes in this movie that will knock you on the floor. The whole cast is incredible; McDormand and Rockwell will both destroy you.

Thor: Ragnarok

Somebody was smoking some laced wild shit and licking frogs when they put together Thor: Ragnarok, a film so nutty it easily surpasses the Guardians of the Galaxy films as the screwiest offering in the Marvel universe. When you hand the keys to the Thor franchise over to a director like Taika Waititi, you know you are going to get something bizarre. Waititi is the New Zealand comic actor/ director responsible for the hilarious vampire faux documentary What We Do in the Shadows and the funny family drama Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Borrowing from a host of Marvel comics, including the famed “Planet Hulk” storyline, the hallucinogenic plot drops Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a crazy garbage planet bent on round-the-clock, violent entertainment and led by Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum, finally getting a high-profile role worthy of him outside of a Wes Anderson film). The Grandmaster cuts Thor’s hair, dresses him in gladiator gear, and throws him into the ring for a weaponized bout with his prized competitor.

That prized competitor is the Hulk, held captive on the planet for the past couple of years. He’s been nothing but the Hulk the whole time, with Dr. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) trapped inside him. Thor and Hulk have a battle royale for the ages, followed by some great scenes where the Hulk actually speaks. There’s a whole other apocalyptic subplot going on, where Thor’s long-lost sister Hela (a striking and devilish Cate Blanchett decked out in black) is causing major havoc on his home planet of Asgard.

Blanchett immediately sets herself high in the ranking of Marvel movie villains. She’s played a baddie before, but never this entertainingly.

Reno has long been a college town.

Hardly a day goes by when I don’t spot Wolf Pack license plates on the road and team spirit regalia at local businesses. The building at Ninth and Virginia Streets near the south end of the University of Nevada, Reno has housed a number of college hangouts over the decades, but Union, “The U,” has staked its claim as the best yet.

Although the outdoor signage includes the phrase “family friendly,” the place didn’t seem ready to welcome business at noon on a winter Saturday. Once inside, we couldn’t help wondering if the heating bill had gone unpaid—and the front door was left open for quite some time.

There appeared to be some question as to whether or not we’d be served food “this early” in the day, or whether we’d even be able to order drinks. But after 20 or 30 minutes, the confusion settled down, and we were able to order—although our jackets stayed on throughout the visit.

We started with garlic cilantro shrimp sticks ($10), three grilled skewers of medium-sized shrimp, bell pepper and grape tomato, served atop a bed of purple cabbage with cilantro lime and sweet soy dipping sauces. Everything about this dish was good. Next was a fresh and flavorful serving of sweet chili lettuce boats ($9)— leaves of romaine filled with salad shrimp, purple cabbage, cilantro and peanut. We also ordered a bowl of feta-stuffed, baconwrapped dates ($7). They were great on their own but extra special when dunked in the shrimp skewers’ dipping sauces.

From the list of sandwiches and burgers, we sampled a Frito bacon burger ($10.50), with a housemade patty covered in cheddar, lettuce, tomato, red onion and house burger sauce and corn chips. I couldn’t see anything resembling chips in the mix, but,

while munching, I did notice an occasional crunchy note. If they were there, they must have been pulverized and blended into either the sauce or the burger meat itself.

The beef was cooked to order—medium rare—and the overall result was pretty tasty. The burger came with plenty of crispy bacon. The veggies were fresh, and the burger sauce appeared to be cousin to honey mustard. A healthy side of wellseasoned, battered fries was served on the side, with a likely housemade, somewhat chunky ketchup—definitely not Heinz.

There are salads, pasta and chicken wings on the menu, but we were all about a pair of thin crust pizzas to complete the meal. Our caprese pie ($12) was a little singed on the edges and topped with plenty of mozzarella, tomato, basil, red sauce and balsamic vinegar drizzle. The sauce could have used a little more zip to counter the balsamic sweetness but was enjoyable, nonetheless. The Roman pie ($13) with pesto sauce, mozzarella, feta cheese, artichoke heart, arugula, cherry tomato, roasted garlic, jalapeno and lemon juice was good also. The contrasts between sharp, bitter, sour, earthy, spicy and sweet in this pizza was something else, and the toppings were well supported by a nicely crisped crust.

Despite the initial hiccups, service was friendly and relatively efficient. The food was above average for what I expect in a college hangout. And though I had intended to take leftovers home, we left with empty hands and full bellies. Ω

On tap The kids were out with grandma visiting a friend in Fernley, so a Sunday evening opportunity for my wife and me to go out for a drink presented itself. In a coincidental do-over of last week, we headed downtown to First Street again, across the street this time, overlooking the Truckee River at Sierra Tap House.

The bar was pretty quiet on this clear, cold evening—an assortment of seemingly regular barfly fellows at the bar, making small talk with the bartender and each other, but tables throughout were empty.

Thanks to expansion over the years, Tap House actually has three connected rooms, each with its own front door, plus outdoor seating facing the river. It’s a popular spot in summer months when crowds gather at Wingfield Park during events. The peculiar location, tucked under the back side of the Truckee Lane Building, makes you feel like you’re in a basement speakeasy, surrounded by brick and heavy wooden beams supporting the floors above.

As the name suggests, Sierra Tap House enjoys a partnership with Sierra Nevada Brewing in Chico, California. Although there’s no formal business relationship, Tap House dedicates all of its dozen draft lines to Sierra Nevada beers. It’s cool to see the full range available from this craft brewing pioneer, from the classic Pale Ale through a full beer spectrum of pilsner, Irish stout, Bigfoot barleywine and more.

The decor is heavy on Sierra Nevada swag, from mirrors to burlap hop bags. And, as a sort of extension of the brewery, the Tap House enjoys exclusive special releases, events, vintage kegs and the like. I’ve never seen this kind of brewery-dedicated arrangement for a bar, but it reminds me of a British “tied house,” where a brewery owns the pub and enjoys having a dedicated

seller of exclusively its beer. Not to worry, though, Sierra Tap House also offers a healthy selection of other brews in bottles and cans, a well-stocked full bar and a couple of unremarkable wines.

While I ordered beers, my wife got her fix on Ms. Pac-Man. A few other arcade games, pool and shuffleboard are other options, if the piles of board games don’t strike your fancy. Several TVs provided sporting entertainment, but it doesn’t feel like a sports bar at all. I was tempted by a beer I’ve heard good things about, the 11 percent ABV Narwhal imperial stout with cocoa and coconut, but wasn’t up for a full glass of that, so I settled on an old-school Sierra Nevada classic, the Porter, while my wife enjoyed a hoppy pint of Torpedo.

A couple of barstools opened up, and she asked if I’d join her while she played some video poker. We sat at one end, where I noticed a small plaque overhead on the ceiling beams. It was in remembrance of one of the bar’s best customers, a kind, generous, talented guy with a wonderful smile, named Steve. He was also our friend, and he lost his battle with cancer this year.

I drank my porter and thought about how many times I saw Steve here, occasionally in person but usually on Facebook, posting triumphant pictures of a four of a kind or a straight flush. Just then, my wife found some unusual luck herself, winning back her original bet several times over.

The kids were en route home by now, so, despite the brief lucky streak, we decided to call it a night and finished our pints as she cashed out her winnings. I couldn’t help thinking Steve had left some of his luck for her at Tap House. Ω

Lynn Carpenter, Jeff King and Alexander Alcantar—a.k.a. Prince Robot—do not play slow songs.

Fast lane Prince Robot Guitar player Alexander Alcantar and drummer Jeff King always wanted to start their own band. They had tried out several singers, but nothing was clicking the way they wanted. One night, Alcantar’s wife, Melissa, went out for drinks and karaoke with one of her husband’s coworkers, Lynn Carpenter. After Carpenter belted out “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper, Melissa went home, woke her husband up and said, “Lynn is going to sing in your band. It’s going to happen.” It’s been a little over a year, and the group, Prince Robot, is set to release its first album, PostApocalyptic Dancehall Blues, in January.

The members of Prince Robot describe themselves as junk rockers. They like to make as much racket as they can with as few people as possible. Speed is key, too.

According to King, he doesn’t ever play slow songs because it makes him uncomfortable. The band pulls its inspiration from a range of influences including ’50s surf rock and punk—and Bikini Kill front woman Kathleen Hanna’s ability to scream in key, according to Carpenter.

“For me, it’s the guitar,” said Alcantar.

“I really love the electric guitar, and like what is possible with it. It’s just such an amazing invention. I love Dick Dale and stuff like that.”

The band, even long before Carpenter arrived, was set on not having a bass player.

Alcantar said that he’s been playing with King for so long that only they can understand each other’s musical language. A bass player would not have been compatible.

Plus, some of Alcantar’s biggest inspirations are no-bass bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Japandroids.

“We all have our own personal touch on it, and I think it’s all very evident because there are so few people in the band, so the arrangements are very obvious,” said

Alcantar. “Sometimes if it skews one way or, another it’ll start to feel off-kilter.”

Of the nine tracks on the new album, no two sound the same. One features extended guitar feedback while another has a funky surf beat to the drums.

According to Carpenter, lyrics are inspired by everything from politics to personal weirdness to a performance at Shea’s Tavern. Carpenter also said she goes off to write the song lyrics and usually comes back despising them and never wanting to see them again.

According to Alcantar and King, the more Carpenter hates the lyrics she writes, the better they’re going to be.

“I write poetry, but it’s very freestyle, non-rhyming poetry,” said Carpenter.

“I was like, ‘I can’t write songs. I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. What the hell am I doing with my life?’ So, I just kind of came up with something.”

The bandmtes continued to write songs all the way until the end of their recording at Dogwater Studios with Rick Spagnola. They finalized their song “Mess” during their three-day session and didn’t even have an ending for it until Spagnola told them to just run through the song to see what would happen.

“I actually made a mistake at the end by stopping early, and I was like, ‘Oh we’re still going,’ so I start going again, and it’s on the album,” said King, “We were like, ‘I guess that’s how the song goes.’”

According to Spagnola, the album sounded like post-apocalyptic B-52s.

That—in combination with Alcantar’s love for music you can dance to—led to calling the album Post-Apocalyptic Dancehall Blues.

He figures Prince Robot would be the ideal bar band in the post-apocalypse. Ω

You flooze, you lose I’m a married lesbian in my 50s.

I blew up my happy marriage by having an affair with somebody I didn’t love and wasn’t even that attracted to. Now my wife, whom I love very much, is divorcing me.

Why did I cheat on her? I don’t understand my own behavior.

The late infidelity researcher Shirley Glass said there’s a widespread assumption that “a happy marriage is insurance against infidelity.”

Even she used to assume that. But her research (and that of subsequent researchers) finds that even happily married people end up cheating— for a variety of reasons. Sometimes they want better sex or even just different sex. Sometimes they want an ego shine. And sometimes they feel something’s missing within them. But soul-searching is emotionally grubby, tedious work, so they first look for that missing something in the nearest hot person’s underpants.

It seems inexplicable that you risked everything you care about for somebody you find kind of meh—until you look at this through the lens of “bounded rationality.”

“Bounded rationality” is the late Nobel Prize-winning cognitive scientist Herbert Simon’s term for the constraints on our ability to make truly reasoned, rational decisions. These decision-making constraints include having a limited time to make a choice and limited cognitive ability, which keeps us from seeing the whole picture, with its rainbow of repercussions.

We can end up engaging in what psychologists call “framing,” a sort of selecta-vision in which we make decisions based on whichever part of the picture happens to be in mental focus at the time. Of course, we’re more likely to focus on how fun it would be to have a little strange than how strange it would be to end up exiled to a motel when the wife finds out.

For some people, behavior from their spouse that suggests “Ha-ha… crossed my fingers during that vows thing!” is simply a deal breaker. But say your wife still loves you and is mainly leaving because she feels she can’t trust you. A partner who inexplicably cheats is a partner there’s no stopping from inexplicably cheating again.

If you can explain—though not excuse!—your thinking (or nonthink) at the time, maybe your wife will agree to try couples therapy, at least for a few months.

Bounded rationality aside, I suspect you’re unlikely to cheat again, and especially not on what I call “The ER Model” for bad decisions: patients muttering, “This isn’t how I thought the night would end”—just before the doctor extracts the light saber-toting action figure from a place where, no, the sun does not shine but supplemental illumination is generally unnecessary.

How long does it take to get over someone? One friend said it takes half as long as you were together, and another said it takes twice that time.

Your friends, with their precise breakup timetables, are confusing emotional recovery with mass transit. The reality is, people vary—like in how naturally resilient they are—and so do relationships.

Sadness after a breakup can feel like the pointless adult version of getting grounded indefinitely.

However, as I’ve written in previous columns, psychiatrist and evolutionary psychologist Randolph Nesse explains that sadness appears to be “adaptive”—meaning that it has useful functions. For example, the “disengagement” from motivation that accompanies sadness gives us time to process what happened, possibly helping us learn from our mistakes instead of inviting them back in for an eggnog.

Accordingly, a way to heal emotionally is to find meaning within your mistakes— figuring out what you might have seen or done differently, which tells you what you should probably do differently in the future. Think of the sadness holding you down not as your hostage-taker but as your helper. Deliberately using it that way might even help you curb the impatience that leads some to start dating before they’re actually ready. Ω

They host a monthly meetup, and she asked, this month, we would co-host a Feminist Holiday Party with them, which I’m super excited about—because we’ve had some really strong legislative wins, both of us, separately and together in 2017. And our activists have really done a lot this year, and we want to give thanks and get together. And we thought it would be great to do it after the Christmas holiday, because it can be kind of depressing that next day—or whatever anybody celebrates, not just a Christmas holiday.

But, you know that slump afterward, so we wanted to get together and celebrate our wins.

Control that its future reports can’t contain certain words that it finds troublesome (including the outlandishly liberal “sciencebased.”) This story points out why I’ve morphed This Space over the last 18 months into a weekly screech of Trumpophobia. It shows very clearly how Dum Dum has, in less than a year, eclipsed Dubya as, hands down, without a doubt, the most horrible president in the history of this now reeling country.

Sure, Dub was a disaster. Dum Dum is another level of disaster altogether. (As Dub giggles to Darth on the phone, “Jesus, Dick, remember when you were America’s asshole?”)

All this speculation about the possibility of Dum Dum firing special counsel Mueller, or Retrumplican invertebrates somehow shutting down Mueller, forces me to grab at some low hanging fruit— if Trump fires Mueller, doesn’t he

instantly declare himself guilty?

Doesn’t he pretty much confess to a flaming conspiracy with Russia? Isn’t this the lasting lesson from Nixon? And aren’t Refuglican efforts in Congress to discredit Mueller brazen reminders that these guys much prefer health of party to health of country?

Speaking of Trumpophobia, a gold medal in this field is hereby awarded to the editorial staff of USA Today, which stepped up nicely in a recent column when it declared that Dum Dum “wasn’t fit to clean the toilets in the Barack Obama Presidential Library or shine the shoes of George W. Bush.” Now that’s a spiffy little bile blast, made with confident knowledge that it would not only get noticed in the White House, it would most definitely get Vlad’s No. 1 Bitch Boy nicely steamed.

Maybe even apoplectic. Totally sweet. Merry Indictmas! Ω
