This year SN&R’s Sacramento Area Music Awards—a.k.a. the SAMMIES—marks its 25th anniversary. And what a long, fun trip it’s been. For a quarter-century the SAMMIES have celebrated local musicians, deejays and producers and the rich, vibrant scene that they’ve created. SN&R’s annual voting process and resulting awards show has long served to highlight the best in local rock, pop, hip-hop, blues, country, jazz, electronica, world and beyond.

The SAMMIES aren’t just about awards, of course, they’re about community, support and exposure. To that end, over the last 25 years, the SAMMIES have helped bring a wealth of artists to the world at large: Cake and the Deftones; Rituals of Mine, Mozzy and Chelsea Wolfe and so much more.

The more things change, the more they stay the same: This year, more than than 34,700 votes were cast in 29 categories. Thank you to everyone who took time to cast a vote, listen to nominees or check out a show. And, of course, a big congratulations to all the nominees.

Winners will be announced Thursday, June 15 at Ace of Spades.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for a 7 p.m. show featuring performances by 2017 nominees and Sacramento legacy acts. Tickets are $10 at the door and a limited number of half-price tickets are on sale at https://snrsweetdeals.newsreview.com. See you there!

n past years, the SAMMIES Hall of Fame was a place where artists and bands that had won three SAMMIES awards “retired”—making them ineligible for future nominations. This year, to celebrate the SAMMIES’ 25th anniversary, the old rules have been ditched. The three-win honor still means an automatic entry into the Hall of Fame, but from here on out artists are still eligible for future SAMMIES nominations, because music never retires, it just gets better.
