A CN&R RESTAURANT & NIGHTLIFE GUIDE

C

hico’s dining and nightlife scenes are bursting at the seams, with a huge variety of restaurants, food trucks and beer bars to satisfy your every craving. Downtown offers plenty of opportunities for date-night dining, brunch with friends, and patios galore so you can see and be seen while enjoying the weather. Venture out from there and you’ll find a range of eateries, from those that specialize in international flavors to barbecue to creative fusion menus. And we can’t forget to mention the blossoming beverage district that has taken hold along Park Avenue, where you can find breweries, fine wines, ciders and even locally made rum. The food truck scene is also ever-growing, with rallies where you can find a range of delicious street vendors to beer bars that invite a rotating array of mobile munchies. And Chico eateries continue to cater to the vegan and vegetarian crowds; some specialize in those kinds of dishes, while others are increasingly growing that portion of their menus. Browse through this guide, created annually by the Chico News & Review, and find the right spot to fit your mood.

hen it comes to food traditions, nothing quite comes close to Taco Tuesday. On a whim one week, I turned to my boyfriend and asked: “Should we start observing Taco Tuesdays?” Without missing a beat, he said, “The answer to that is always yes.” So, we set out on a quest to find the best tacos in town by hitting up a different spot every Tuesday. (OK, there were a few that were so good we had to go more than once, and not only on Tuesdays.) Some restaurants and food trucks—for those new to Chico, there’s probably a taco truck within a stone’s throw of you right now—observe the tradition as well and offer tacos for as low as a buck. Others have fun with trying out new flavors each week, or adding tacos to the menu only on Tuesdays. First, let’s talk tacos. There are street tacos, which are, generally speaking, small, soft-shelled corn tortillas topped with meat, onions and cilantro and served with lime wedges. Then, there are the hard-shelled kind. Some places will deep-fry theirs—this can be heavenly, so long as they pin the taco tightly enough to keep the grease out—while others simply grill them with oil. The third option is nontraditional—usually you’ll find these at non-Mexican

restaurants. Traditionalists swear by Chico’s taco trucks. And everyone seems to have a favorite. While there may be a neighborhood truck that you frequent for its convenience, locals are known to drive clear across town to satisfy a craving. I can’t say I’ve tried them all—though that’s the ultimate goal—but a few stood out and are worth mentioning. Tacos Ramirez is my favorite find, and like many that park outside of my usual radius, I’d never tried it. The bright orange truck stationed at the corner of Nord and Stewart avenues is hard to miss, and there was a reason for the line when I got there—

the food is amazing. It’s also one of the few trucks with a deep-fryer, meaning chimichangas are on the menu. Tuesday or not, tacos with your basic meats—carne asada, chicken, al pastor and carnitas—are $1. They also serve fish, chorizo, lengua, cabeza, tripitas (tripe) and buche (pork stomach) for an extra 25-50 cents. My go-to taste-testers are chicken and carne asada. Both were exceptional here. Where some trucks serve bland or dry chicken tacos, these were tender, juicy and flavorful. And my biggest complaint about carne asada is tough or fatty beef—not a problem here. A+. Sit-down Mexican places in Chico vary wildly from Americanized spots to truly authentic. You can usually tell by the music, the menus and the décor which is which. I have two standout favorites, places I return to time and again, and Taco Tuesday gave me an excuse Maria Guadalupe Quintero serves up some mean Mexican to expand my horizons by trying their food at Tacos Tonaya #2. offerings. Tacos Tonaya #2 is down the street from where I live, and I’m very, very happy for that fact. (It’s secondary to the truck with the same name.) A few years ago, the small restaurant, at the corner of Walnut and Third streets, expanded from a tiny hole in the wall to a much bigger space. It’s family-run, with super friendly service. And their tacos are worth raving about. I’ll mention here that I’m not a fan of spicy foods, so I always order mild salsa. Some turn out runny and flavorless—Tonaya’s is bright, with a slight tang. The chicken tacos are very good, but the carne asada is awesome. And on Tuesdays, they’re only a buck! Extra points for Maria’s homemade horchata and aguas frescas. Hands down my favorite place for Mexican food has to be Gordo Burrito—the one inside the Valero station on Eighth Street, as its full kitchen (as opposed to the truck with the same name) allows for more menu variety— offerings, I’ve tried plenty. Ike’s Smokehouse, the truck that including grilled tacos. I actually might have formed an parks in front of Ray’s Liquor on Walnut Street, serves addiction to Gordo’s grilled shrimp tacos. I can’t eat one up some killer “redneck tacos,” with either pulled pork or without exclaiming, “Mmm!” regardless of whether anychicken, onions, cilantro, feta and hot sauce. In a similar one’s around to hear me. These aren’t street tacos—the vein, B Street Public House, on Broadway downtown, is tortilla is bigger, and solo, and it’s thrown on the grill to give known for its “trashy fried chicken tacos”—with slaw, pickit some crunch. Gordo is known for its shrimp—I’ve long led onions, cilantro and a cilantro ranch sauce. been a fan of their surf-n-turf steak and shrimp burritos— At Rawbar, also on Broadway, the Korean tacos are and they don’t skimp. O

ne of the fastest-growing sections of Chico has become known as the beverage district, concentrated along a section of Park Avenue in an industrial neighborhood. It’s largely the byproduct of Secret Trail Brewing Co. owners Charlie and Michelle Barrett and Jesse Fischer, who launched a campaign to change the city code and allow taprooms without restaurants attached. What’s story and resulted is a blossoming community of craft beverphotos by Meredith J. age lovers/makers that also supports—and benefits Cooper from—Chico’s many artisan food trucks. mere d i thc @ Here’s a quick look at the businesses that make up newsrev iew.c om the beverage district today. Expect the list to change, as new spaces are opening up regularly. Check websites for special events and food truck schedules, as well. AVE .

A group of friends enjoys a variety of brews at The Commons.

CELLAR DOOR CIDER 11 Commerce Court, Ste. 2, facebook.com/cellardoor With a soft opening scheduled after Savor went to press, this is the newest establishment in the beverage district. Its founder is Bryan Shaw, who cut his teeth in the fermentation world studying and working with wine—most notably for locals at New Clairvaux Vineyard. Cellar Door Cider, which is sold on-site as well as at S&S Produce, is made with Northern California apples. Check out Shaw’s various concoctions at the tasting room (check ahead for hours). Worth noting is that Shaw’s craftsmanship doesn’t begin and end with delicious beverages. He’s also the man behind Alexander’s Artwood. So, keep your eyes peeled during your visit—the tasting bar is handcrafted.

THE COMMONS SOCIAL EMPOURIUM 2412 Park Ave., 774-2999, commonschico.com Opened in summer 2018, The Commons Social Empourium is the only establishment listed here and located in the heart of the beverage district that does not actually manufacture anything itself. Rather, it’s a gathering place for those who enjoy craft beers, wines and ciders (even kombucha!). The concept is unique in Chico—provide a credit card and your ID upon entering and receive a bracelet that allows you to drink up to 32 oz. Simply tap the bracelet on the screen accompanying your drink of choice to activate that tap—then fill as much or little as you like. The vibe during a recent visit was jovial. In the front room, groups sat and laughed as they sipped. In the back, a two-piece band sang and strummed. And just outside in the parking lot was Drunken Dumpling, a new food truck that’s on The Commons’ regular schedule. There are also games available, from the traditional board variety to cornhole to a ring toss attached to the wall.

HONEYRUN WINERY 2309 Park Ave., 345-6405, honeyrunwinery.com The OG in the beverage district, HoneyRun Winery was opened by locals John and Amy Hasle in 1992. The focus here is on dessert wines, which are clearly distinct from the others being made throughout the region. All of its flavors—blackberry, cherry, dry mead, etc.—are made by fermenting fruit and honey. And they’re all made with no preservatives, sulfites or sorbates. Visit the tasting room, open Monday-Friday, for a sample of their wares.

converting an old, dilapidated building on Park Avenue into a thriving hub of activity, it’s set its roots deeply in the beverage district. So much so, in fact, that The Commons opened up next door—the two share a parking lot. Though that’s where the similarities end. At Hooker Oak, rum is the drink of choice, and it comes in four varieties: light, apple pie, pineapple and vanilla bean. Stop by for a tour of the distillery, which includes a tasting (they’re both free; one need not take the tour to get a taste). Since opening in December 2016, the distillery has grown in notoriety—its products can be found on bar shelves all over town. Check the website for special events, which often include multiple food trucks and live music.

LASSEN TRADITIONAL CIDERY

Chris Gomez, beertender at Secret Trail Brewing Co.

Like most spots in the beverage district, The Commons schedules food trucks to set up in the parking lot on a rotating basis. Pictured here: a pork belly bao from Drunken Dumpling and a pear cider.

26 Bellarmine Court, lassencider.com Founded by former-engineerturned-cider-maker Ben Nielsen in 2015, Lassen Traditional Cidery creates small-batch ciders using locally sourced apples and other fruits. Unlike most mass-produced ciders, Lassen’s starts with the apple (vs. juice) and utilizes “wild fermentation,” with no added sugar. These factors contribute to the seasonal nature of the business. Without apples to be picked, there is no cider to be made. The tasting room at Lassen Traditional Cidery opened in late 2017 to offer cider aficionados a chance to check out the flavors before purchasing. Open Saturdays, 2-7 p.m.

NORCAL BREWING CO. 180 Erma Court, 592-3845, norcalbc.com Opened in July 2018, NorCal Brewing Co. is one of the district’s newest tenants. Owner/brewmaster Jim Hardesty has nearly three decades of experience in the beer industry, including a stint at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. supervising packaging. Now he’s in charge of his own brewery and taproom, with an emphasis on small-batch craft beer. Visit the taproom to sample NorCal’s brews—and take home your

favorite in a growler. Like most of the spots listed here, there are games to be played, plus a rotating lineup of food trucks and live musicians to keep the mood light.

SECRET TRAIL BREWING CO. 132 Meyers St., Ste. 120, 487-8151, secrettrailbrewing.com With over a dozen housemade beers available in the taproom, Secret Trail is quickly making a name for itself in a town long dominated, beer-wise, by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. In fact, Secret Trail’s brews aren’t relegated to one space—find them in restaurants throughout Chico, Paradise, Oroville and beyond. The taproom itself is warm and inviting, with a stated goal of building community. There are board games available for those who like to play, plus it’s dog- and kid-friendly. The patio is spacious and comfortable, as well—expect a different food truck to set up shop each day of the week. ●
