Lee-Sean Huang Faculty member, Business Design for Social Impact Certificate “ What I like most about Open Campus is the democratization of design education,” says faculty member Lee-Sean Huang. Huang teaches online courses for the Design Leadership for Business and the Business Design for Social Impact certificates. He’s also the founder and creative director of the service design consultancy Foosa. Reflecting on Open Campus’ contribution to the New School community. Huang notes that “we get working professionals and people at various stages of life who wouldn't ordinarily interact in person in the classroom.” He’s observed another surprising benefit of online-only classes: “Students are relaxed in a way which allows those with different kinds of mindsets to shine—they can be more reflective. So as a teacher, I’m able to engage these multiple mindsets in a new way.”
Nate Schrader Graduate, Design Leadership for Business Certificate “ I’ve always been strategic and drawn to creative design work, but I needed professional examples and credibility to break into a strategy-based career,” says Nate Schrader, a graduate of the Design Leadership for Business Certificate program. From the program he brought co-designed transformative ideas to his work as a marketing manager for the online childcare marketplace Sittercity. In his new position as a creative strategist for Havas, Schrader applies the skills he acquired in the program to designing more human-centered experiences. “The program helped me transition into a new strategic career in two ways,” he explains. “It added credibility through new portfolio examples and a university certification and it inspired me to apply design strategies—gather insight, prototype, iterate— to perfecting my job search.”

Nidhi Garg Graduate, Fashion Design Certificate “ Designers want to make more meaningful products which have a story, which have people behind them,” says fashion artisan and entrepreneur Nidhi Garg, a graduate of Parsons' Fashion Design Certificate graduate program. “That’s where Parsons helped me—it made me think like a designer.” In her international campaign to connect time-honored textile craftsmanship with contemporary designers for mutual benefit, she has found that her Parsons experience opens doors. “In my partnerships in any other part of the world, telling them I’m from Parsons leaves a very nice impression. From that point on, they start taking me seriously.” But it’s not all about gaining business credibility; Parsons also encourages individual expression. Garg notes that “one of the most important things I learned at Parsons was to be yourself.”

Kristin Jaworowski Graduate, Graphic and Digital Design Certificate Photographer-turned-designer Kristin Jaworowski was led to Parsons by an epiphany. Working in the frenetic world of high fashion photography, she was advised by a colleague to “branch out or burn out.” Jaworowski found the graphic and digital design courses at Parsons both rigorous and inspiring. “I felt educated and learned all this new software and techniques,” she says. Parsons was instrumental in helping Jaworowski overcome the disconnect between the academic and the professional. “I don’t know what would have filled that gap if I hadn’t come here and laid the foundation for what I could do,” she says. Today she is building her own design and branding business on that foundation.

The Making of Online Courses In bringing our university’s pioneering curricula to learners around the world, The New School’s Distributed Education team carry forward our commitment to increasing access to education. They continually develop innovative online offerings that distribute (hence the team’s name) the kind of design-based problem-solving skills and other capacities that professionals need to advance their careers. Distributed Education’s online courses combine real-time learning with coursework that can be completed offline and on one’s own schedule. The result? An engaged global learning network bringing their best to classroom and group projects. The virtual collaborative communities built are just as strong as those that develop on the university campus and offer an equally rich experience. “Our online courses are highly experiential,” says Shira Richman, associate director of Distributed Education. “They push students to take what they are learning in the virtual classroom and apply it in the world around them.” The asynchronous, offline portions of our courses give students flexibility, enabling them to progress through material on their own time, review recorded lectures, and formulate questions to ask later.

The Zoom meeting tool allows faculty to hold synchronous online classes and live meetings for individual or small group support; students can use it for presentations and feedback sessions.
