College of Performing Arts The groundbreaking College of Performing Arts brings together the schools of Drama, Jazz and Contemporary Music, and Mannes, freeing students to cross boundaries and create new genres. The School of Media Studies’ faculty of working professionals guide undergraduate and graduate students through curricula that bring together hands-on media making, critical analysis and reflection, entrepreneurship, and management. In the summer course on multimedia storytelling, you get the tools, collaboration methods, and individual attention you need to create finished pieces.

Creative Writing Program The New School held the first academic creative writing workshop in 1931 and today is home to diverse literary voices and publishing professionals. Graduate students in the program develop their craft in workshops and seminars led by a faculty enmeshed in New York’s publishing and writing scene. Credit Programs Students 16 and older, college-age students, and adults can earn college credit in The New School’s interdisciplinary programs this summer. These programs draw on the vast resources of Parsons School of Design, Mannes School of Music, the School of Media Studies, the Creative Writing Program, and the Julien J. Studley Graduate Programs in International Affairs to offer career-enhancing skills and experience designed for high school students, college students, and working professionals.

Pre-college students in grades 3–12 can delve into fields ranging from animation and cartooning to fashion to 3D design and architecture in a noncredit Parsons Pre-College Academy course in New York City. Music students in grades 2–12 can join us in August for one of our weeklong Mannes Prep intensives to hone their skills and receive guidance from like-minded peers and renowned professionals in the field.

FILM AT THE NEW SCHOOL Filmmaking Intensive

4-WEEK COURSE

Film, Art, Change: Making Movies to Make a Difference July 6–31, 2020 / Ages 16–18 (rising high school juniors and seniors) Students acquire an understanding of film as social practice and re-imagine the city through multimedia storytelling that engages and informs. Students are immersed in the history and practice of making movies through instruction in 16mm filmmaking and high-definition (HD) digital techniques. The course guides students in developing their creative filmmaking and focuses on individual production, group projects, and critical discussion. Summer Jazz Intensive

1-WEEK COURSE

August 3–7, 2020 / Grades 7–12 / All instruments Join us for our weeklong Summer Jazz Intensive at Mannes Prep with the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music. Students are grouped in ensembles and work closely with distinguished performers and educators from the faculty of the school. The intensive features a low student-to-faculty ratio, a nurturing musical community, unique learning experiences, and a completion concert. All students participate in daily ensemble coachings, ear training, and theory classes; they also learn about jazz history through exploration of historic Greenwich Village. The week culminates in student performances that are open to friends, family, and the public on Friday night.

MANNES PREP Music College Audition Bootcamp

1-WEEK COURSE

August 3–7, 2020 / Ages 16–18 (rising high school juniors and seniors) All instruments This bootcamp is designed for students in the process of preparing for college music auditions. Develop your skills, confidence, and understanding of the music college/ conservatory audition process. Through intensive work with faculty in workshops, mock auditions, and repertoire classes, you build and refine your audition skills, learning how to best present yourself in college auditions. Discover dos and don’ts for auditions, and learn how to manage performance anxiety while turning it into a valuable asset. Hear directly from college admission professionals and receive guidance in interviewing, filling out applications, writing a résumé, and more. Prepare for college theory and ear training placement testing with intensive review and practice testing. Summer Chamber Music Intensive

Summer Intensive Studies in Constructed Environments

4-WEEK COURSE

June 22–July 24, 2020 / Ages 19+ Explore architecture, interior design, or industrial design while creating portfolio-ready works for application to graduate programs such as Parsons’ MArch or MFA in Interior, Lighting, or Industrial Design. This rigorous, intensive studio course introduces you to the design process, enabling you to develop manual and digital skills including measuring, drafting, model making, and design communication. Luxury Design Management: Parsons Paris—Polimoda (Paris and Florence)

4-WEEK COURSE

June 26–July 24, 2020 / College juniors and seniors, adults Luxury Design Management is a specialized summer course on the essence, heritage, and organization of high-end industries. It focuses on the strategic development of France’s and Italy’s leading luxury sectors and provides an interdisciplinary understanding of their characteristics and operations at the crossroads of design innovation, business, and culture. The course—offered jointly by Parsons Paris and Polimoda, an Italian fashion education institution—is run by resident professors and industry lecturers from Paris and Florence. It combines lectures, seminars, workshops, and field trips to luxury fashion companies and production sites in and around Florence and Paris. During the course, participants receive instructions and tutoring as they work on a research project, keeping track of their process in written and visual form.

PARSONS ABROAD Decorative Arts Graduate Seminar

2-WEEK COURSE

Late June–early July (dates TBD) / Ages 22+ with a BA or the equivalent Each summer, Parsons faculty organize two-week graduate study courses in settings around the world—Paris, London, Berlin, Stockholm, and Helsinki, to name some recent examples—that are rich in history and opportunities for focused study of decorative arts, design, and curatorial work. These courses draw on local cultural resources and offer unparalleled access to the objects, interiors, curators, and approaches to scholarship and presentation that make these cultural capitals unique. Recent classes have engaged with topics including Scandinavian modernism and national identity, French period interiors, and German material culture from the late 18th century to the early 20th century. 7-WEEK COURSE

June 1–July 17, 2020 / Ages 20+ Gain hands-on experience in the UN system. The United Nations Summer Study (UNSS) program, offered by The New School’s Julien J. Studley Graduate Programs in International Affairs, brings together professionals and graduate and advanced undergraduate students for on-site observation, discussion, and study with the United Nations in New York City. UNSS takes you beyond a narrow focus on security and diplomacy to explore development, human rights, humanitarian action, peacekeeping, gender and peacebuilding, and environmental and reform issues. Coursework prepares you to understand and engage with contemporary issues, policies, and debates in international affairs. Limited partial scholarships are available for selected non–New School students. WRITING AT THE NEW SCHOOL Summer Writers Colony

3-WEEK COURSE

June 1–18, 2020 / Ages 19+ Discover the writer’s life in New York City at The New School’s Summer Writers Colony. This intensive three-week program provides a supportive yet challenging atmosphere in which to develop as a writer. You and your peers critique one another’s projects in a daily writing workshop moderated by a member of The New School’s distinguished writing faculty. Instructors also provide detailed feedback on your work. Participants can elect to attend daily sessions focused on developing the writer’s craft or join moderated conversations with professionals in publishing. In the evenings, literary salons bring notable writers such as Teju Cole, Lydia Davis, Mary Gaitskill, Jhumpa Lahiri, Eileen Myles, Maggie Nelson, and Colson Whitehead into conversation with colony students and faculty.

1-WEEK COURSE

June 22–26, 2020 / Ages 19+ The New School Publishing Institute is a weeklong intensive in which you acquire the foundation you need to break into the world of New York City publishing—or launch your own venture. Led by publishing veteran John Oakes and featuring visits from top NYC CEOs, publishers, agents, and publicists, the institute offers students and professionals an accelerated immersive course of study engaging with one of the most popular creative industries in the city. Whether you’re seeking new employment opportunities, wish to learn more about the industry of which you are a part, or are hoping to start your own venture, the New School Publishing Institute will familiarize you with current trends and practices in a rapidly changing field and orient you to new possibilities.
