The school connects students with innovators, policymakers, organization leaders, and community activists working in a global capital, New York City. Graduates take advantage of networks formed and experience gained—and go on to help strengthen organizations and communities near and far. Milano’s curriculum is based on applied learning. Our courses offer students the opportunity to interact with industry professionals and make a difference in the real world. For example, in Urban Policy Lab—the Public and Urban Policy program’s signature course— students drafted food policy recommendations that eventually became law. Their peers in the Digital Equity Lab developed proposals for wireless corridors for New York City’s underserved communities. And in the Managing the Client-Consultant Relationship course, Milano alumni enlisted students in their organizational change efforts.

Public Programs and Centers Milano students have access to and participate in the many public lectures, seminars, conferences, film series, and other special events offered regularly by Milano and other schools and colleges of The New School. Transforming Policy in New York City The Center for New York City Affairs, Milano’s applied research institute, drives innovation in social policy. The center’s programs include InsideSchools, which conducts independent research on New York City’s public schools; Feet in 2 Worlds, an immigrant journalism project; Child Welfare Watch, a statistical survey monitoring New York City’s child welfare system; and the Institute for Transformative Mentoring, a dynamic professional training program. A Legacy of Social Innovation The Impact Entrepreneurship Initiative is a university-wide program offering early-stage entrepreneurial students from diverse backgrounds

the training, resources, and networks they need to transform challenges into opportunities. The program’s ultimate goal is to foster a more inclusive economy and advance social, economic, and environmental good. A Center for Climate Justice and Design The Tishman Environment and Design Center is a New School institute that integrates bold design, policy, and social justice approaches to environmental issues. Milano works closely with the Tishman Center to connect students and faculty to innovative course offerings, community partnerships, and opportunities for interdisciplinary research. The center plays an active role in applying The New School’s design and social justice tenets to the climate change movement. Bridging the Digital Divide The Digital Equity Laboratory, founded and directed by Maya Wiley, Henry Cohen Professor of Urban Policy and Management, is a Milano initiative designed to address inequities stemming from the increasing reliance on technology in our society. The lab encompasses both a graduate course and a project platform for advancing social justice policy and providing technology resources, including access to training, broadband, and digital tools. The lab team has advocated for wireless Internet in public housing, researched online privacy, and documented bias in public data collection as part of an effort to secure government funding for underserved communities.

CURRICULUM The Master of Science degree is awarded upon completion of 42 credits. Students complete two core courses in economics and methods, eight required program courses (including a capstone seminar), two courses in either the Policy or the Management concentration, and two electives. The required courses introduce you to the relevant natural science, financial analytics, public policy, and management dimensions of environmental and sustainability studies. You complete the program with a capstone seminar, in which you develop an individual research- and practice-based project in a collaborative and multidisciplinary learning environment. The program can be completed in two years of fulltime study and offers working professionals the option of completing the degree through part-time study. Full-time students lacking relevant experience are encouraged to undertake a noncredit professional internship to gain exposure to the field, develop new skills, and build a professional network.

CURRICULUM The Doctor of Philosophy degree is awarded for completing 60 credits, passing the qualifying examination, and writing and defending a dissertation. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required for admission to the three 18-credit programs we offer. Candidates come from diverse fields including business, law, public administration, education, psychology, social work, and sociology. Students enrolled in a master’s program at The New School may be able to earn a certificate concurrently with their graduate degree. New students are admitted to the Organization Development and Sustainability Strategies certificate programs in both the fall and the spring semesters.
