We piloted our first online offering, the DIAL (Distance Instruction for Adult Learners) program, in 1993. And we offered online classes with a partner organization as early as 1985. Since then, we've been developing platforms that make the virtual classroom immersive, interactive, and capable of offering benefits extending beyond in-person classes. The Making of Online Courses As online education quickly became the norm during the COVID-19 pandemic, The New School’s Distributed Education team drew on its ample experience in remote learning to offer students from around the world access to the same high-quality instruction as on-campus learners. The team develops innovative online offerings that teach the design-based problem-solving skills that professionals need to advance their careers in contemporary Web-connected settings. Distributed Education’s online classes combine coursework that can be completed offline and on one’s own schedule with critiques from faculty and outside professionals brought into the virtual classroom. The result? An engaged global learning network prepared for academic and professional challenges. This virtual community offers students the benefits of on-campus collaboration along with a uniquely rich online experience. “Although there may be limits on going out and interacting with each other in person, our courses bring real-life industry experience and a dynamic classroom to students wherever they may be,” says Ilan Jacobsohn, senior director of Distributed Education.
“Our courses are carefully developed during months of collaboration with faculty, so they offer exciting, innovative learning that was designed to be delivered online." The Distributed Education team carries forward its commitment to increasing access to education, encouraging students to progress through material on their own time, review recorded lectures, and formulate questions to ask later. “The learning we are doing now online may be driven by a global health crisis, but it’s enabling us at The New School to prepare learners to work in ways that are increasingly relevant to the digital workplace of the future,” says Jacobsohn.

Online courses enable students to develop a robust, close-knit professional and personal community. “We focus on creating online courses that are highly engaging and depend on the very real interaction that happens between instructors and students, and students and their peers,” says Jacobsohn. “Through a mix of carefully developed course content and the integrated community that forms in a class, students are able to develop the real skills they need to advance their creative and career goals.” The Zoom meeting tool allows faculty to hold synchronous online classes and live meetings for individual or small group support; students can use it for presentations and feedback sessions. Whether students log in to their online classes from New York, California, or anywhere else, they are engaging in a true New School experience. “The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted a sudden and urgent rush to remote learning, but that is not necessarily an ideal version of online education," Jacobsohn says. "Because our courses have been carefully developed during months of collaboration with faculty and are carefully designed and constructed, they offer exciting, innovative learning

Lee-Sean Huang Faculty Member, Design Leadership for Business Certificate “ What I like most about Open Campus is the democratization of design education,” says faculty member Lee-Sean Huang. Huang teaches online courses for the Design Leadership for Business certificate. He’s also the founder and creative director of the service design consultancy Foosa. Reflecting on Open Campus’ contribution to the New School community, Huang notes that “we get working professionals and people at various stages of life who wouldn't ordinarily interact in person in the classroom.” He’s observed another surprising benefit of online-only classes: “Students are relaxed in a way which allows those with different kinds of mindsets to shine—they can be more reflective. So as a teacher, I’m able to engage these multiple mindsets in a new way.”
Nate Schrader Graduate, Design Leadership for Business Certificate “ I’ve always been strategic and drawn to creative design work, but I needed professional examples and credibility to break into a strategy-based career,” says Nate Schrader, a graduate of the Design Leadership for Business Certificate program. From the program he brought co-designed transformative ideas to his work as a marketing manager for the online childcare marketplace Sittercity. In his new position as a creative strategist for Havas, Schrader applies the skills he acquired in the program to designing more human-centered experiences. “The program helped me transition into a new strategic career in two ways,” he explains. “It added credibility through new portfolio examples and a university certification and it inspired me to apply design strategies—gather insight, prototype, iterate— to perfecting my job search.”

Nidhi Garg Graduate, Fashion Design Certificate “ Designers want to make more meaningful products which have a story, which have people behind them,” says fashion artisan and entrepreneur Nidhi Garg, a graduate of Parsons' Fashion Design Certificate graduate program. “That’s where Parsons helped me—it made me think like a designer.” In her international campaign to connect time-honored textile craftsmanship with contemporary designers for mutual benefit, she has found that her Parsons experience opens doors. “In my partnerships in any other part of the world, telling them I’m from Parsons leaves a very nice impression. From that point on, they start taking me seriously.” But it’s not all about gaining business credibility; Parsons also encourages individual expression. Garg notes that “one of the most important things I learned at Parsons was to be yourself.”

Kristin Jaworowski Graduate, Graphic and Digital Design Certificate Photographer-turned-designer Kristin Jaworowski was led to Parsons by an epiphany. Working in the frenetic world of high fashion photography, she was advised by a colleague to “branch out or burn out.” Jaworowski found the graphic and digital design courses at Parsons both rigorous and inspiring. “I felt educated and learned all this new software and techniques,” she says. Parsons was instrumental in helping Jaworowski overcome the disconnect between the academic and the professional. “I don’t know what would have filled that gap if I hadn’t come here and laid the foundation for what I could do,” she says. Today she is building her own design and branding business on that foundation.
