ESL Programs

ESL + Design The ESL + Design program of study is a structured set of intensive English language (ESL) courses plus a design studio, short supplemental workshops, and an orientation to life in the United States. Those who successfully complete the program can obtain a certificate of completion confirming they have attained a specified level of proficiency in English speaking, reading, and writing and foundational skills in art and design. Parsons School of Design and the Schools of Public Engagement together offer the ESL + Design Certificate program. This pre-enrollment program is for international students who plan to attend an art or design college in the United States but need to improve their scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or who wish to refresh their English language skills and adjust to university life in the United States before beginning art and design studies.

ESL + Music The ESL + Music Program is designed to help students develop their English language skills before beginning a degree or diploma program at Mannes. Students study music with members of the Mannes faculty while focusing on their English language skills in order to qualify for degree programs.

ESL + Food The ESL + Food Certificate, offered by English Language Studies at The New School in collaboration with the International Culinary Center (ICC), is designed for international students who wish to pursue professional and/or academic training in culinary arts and food studies but need to improve their English language skills. The certificate program provides a high-quality English language education for students who want to attend culinary school at the ICC, obtain a degree in Food Studies at The New School, or choose another career path within the food industry.

ESL + University Preparation The ESL + University Preparation Certificate program (ESL + University Prep) is designed to prepare students for success in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at The New School or another U.S. institution. The program is customized for each student's degree objective and area of study. Students take a structured set of intensive academic courses in English as a second language (ESL) reading, writing, listening and speaking, and grammar. In addition, students at the advanced level engage in subject-related language training and activities.

Getting Started

First Steps for new students ARRIVAL DATE for new students Plan to arrive at The New School at least 5 business days before your ESL classes are scheduled to begin and attend the 2-day Welcome Workshop orientation for new students. The English Language Studies Department regularly emails new students with the dates of the upcoming Welcome Workshop, but you can also check the date on the ESL Resource Center: http:// blogs.newschool.edu/esl/

PLACEMENT TESTS The placement test is online. It takes 90 minutes to complete. You must complete the test on your own computer or wherever you have access to one. The ESL Department will send information on how to take the test a few weeks before classes begin.

Register and Pay for your Classes You will receive an email from the English Language Studies Department with registration instructions and a link to the correct registration site at least 6 weeks before the semester begins. You must register by no later than 4 weeks before classes begin. When you register, you must pay your full tuition and fees. PLEASE NOTE: Registration Fee is $40. Credit and debit cards are the only acceptable form of payment.

Complete the Required Forms For Immunizations, you can download the form on the Student Health Services website, www.newschool.edu/health For the Emergency Contact form, the Permission to Photograph form, and the Academic Policy Agreement, go to http://bit.ly/eslrequiredforms to fill them out. 09| First Steps

isss check in The United States government requires that students check in with our International Students and Scholars Services as soon as possible after arriving in the U.S. You can checkin online by going to www.newschool.edu/ international-student-services/new-students/

Important Travel Reminder come and introduce yourself to the staff and your advisor

You must show your I-20 at the airport when you arrive in the US, so make sure to have it with you in your carry-on baggage – and have an electronic copy on your phone.

When you arrive in the United States, please make sure to stop by our office at 66 W 12th Street on the 6th Floor to let us know that you've arrived. Your advisor, Jackie Smith is looking forward to meeting you! 10| First Steps

Levels You will be placed in a level after your test. We have 4 levels: -Level 3 (lower intermediate) -Level 4 (middle intermediate) -Level 5 (upper intermediate) -Level 6 (advanced) We do not have Level 1 or 2 (beginner and high beginner levels).

Change of Level We have many years of experience with testing thousands of students and placing them in classes. We are able to accurately place students in 99% of cases. Students sometimes want to change levels, usually because they are anxious to begin their degree work. We understand how students feel but please understand that we do not move students for any reason (such as financial or personal reasons), other than English proficiency. In the first two weeks of classes, your teachers will be giving quizzes, listening to the students speak and looking at your writing to make sure that everyone is in the right place. If you are one of the very rare students who are placed in the wrong level, your teachers will let your advisor know within the first two weeks, and we will be happy to move you. This is only way that students can change levels.

11 | First Steps

Classroom Locations

The online information will probably NOT be accurate. Only our office has the correct information about classroom locations for ESL courses.

Academic Integrity Academic honesty is the responsibility of every student at The New School. Students are responsible for knowing and making use of proper procedures for writing papers, presenting and performing their work, taking examinations, and doing research. (From the University Policies Governing Student Conduct) “Academic honesty includes accurate use of quotations, as well as appropriate and explicit citation of sources in instances of paraphrasing and describing ideas, or reporting on research findings or any aspect of the work of others (including that of instructors and other students). The standards of academic honesty and citation of sources apply to all forms of academic work (examinations, essay theses, dissertations, computer work, art and design work, oral presentations, and other projects).” Academic dishonesty includes but is not limited to: • cheating on examinations, either by copying another student’s work or by utilizing unauthorized materials • any act of plagiarism, that is, the fraudulent presentation of the written, oral, or visual work of others as original • theft of another student’s work • purchase of another student’s work • submitting the same work for more than one course • destruction or defacement of the work of others aiding or abetting • any act of dishonesty • any attempt to gain academic advantage by presenting misleading information, making deceptive statements, or falsifying documents. ESL Student Dismissal Policy Every effort is made to support students' success and avoid dismissal. These efforts include: - early warning by teachers concerned about students' academic performance - recommendations to the University Learning Center - offering access to mental health services - where appropriate, offering accommodations to students with documented disabilities

However, in very rare cases, dismissal may be appropriate. On academic grounds, we would like to reserve the right to dismiss any student who: - has failed the same course 3 times and/or - has failed more than 5 courses of our program over the course of his/her time in the program - has missed 20% or more of the courses in a single semester (20 or more classes, all together, in the fall and spring and 13 classes or more, all together, in the summer)

Dismissal Appeal A student who receives notice of dismissal may petition the dean or director of his or her school to reverse the decision by filing a formal appeal. The appeal must be presented in writing, with supporting documentation, within two weeks of receiving the dismissal notice. Appeals must contain the following information: - The student's explanation for poor performance and/or failure to complete required coursework. - A description of the student's plans to improve academic performance and/or to complete outstanding work. - Any other relevant information pertaining to the student's academic accomplishments or potential.

Students can expect to hear the results of an appeal within two to four weeks of submission. The decision of the dean's office is final.

Attendance It is important for you to come to every class. Your attendance is essential both for your own success and for the success of the class. There are no excused absences. However, for illnesses and emergencies, you might be absent a few times and still be able to pass the class if: 1) you communicate with your professor about your absence 2) you keep up with the work 3) you maintain passing grades on quizzes and assignments The maximum number of absences before automatically failing the course is 4 absences for each of your courses in the fall or spring semesters and 3 absences in the summer semester. Please note: If you are late 3 times for any class, it counts as one absence. 28 | Student Life

Textbooks Most courses require a textbook. Your teacher will give you the name(s) of the required book(s) for your course. All textbooks are available at Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Union Square. The New School section is located on the 4th floor. The books are organized by author.
