When ever people go to the doctor, they go through a series of steps that create a cycle for every visit they make. This cycle can be divided into two different phases. - Phase 1: which starts from the moment the patient enters the building, and ends at the time when he/she is called into the consultation room. - Phase 2: which starts from the moment the patient gets to see the doctor, until the moment he/she pays, and leaves the facilities.
When looking at the amount of time each one of the steps takes, it is noticeable that the waiting time is longer than the amount of time patients get to spend with the doctor during the consultation.

PEOPLE
In a survey I conducted for the purposes of this research; people were asked: - What don´t you like about the waiting experience or place?
From the different answers that were recollected, patients showed to dislike different aspects, such as, the decoration, the smell, the lack of privacy, the crowdiness, and the arrangement of the furniture.
11
FIELD TRIP
To further understand the waiting time experience, there was a need to explore, and observe doctor waiting rooms. I decided to look at three different medical facilities in New York City.
12
CITY MD - Small space - Bad lighting - Cluster furniture - Bad arrangement - Forced social interaction 13
MEDHATTAN - Small space - Bad lighting - Crowded furniture - Only one big couch - Hard to find 14
WELLNESS WORKS - Good lighting - Big well designed space - Clean - Different seating options - Modern Furniture 15
MARKET RESEARCH
Patients spend most of their time sitting while waiting. The waiting room chairs become the object that is in most contact with the body.

HEALTH CARE FURNITURE There are a lot of brands that can be identified in the health care department. Some of which are big in the design industry not only for their health care furniture, but their furniture in general. These brands such as Herman Miller, HON, Stance, Kwalu, Knoll, Norix, Ofm, have been in the industry for years, and have a wide variety of waiting room chairs.

Health care chairs have a neutral generic look, most of them don’t use vibrant colors, and if they have do they lack patterns. Health care seating furniture tends to have a squared shaped body, to be able to maximize space, and create easy arrangement patterns.

PRIVACY FURNITURE After taking a close look at the different health care chairs, there are two specific characteristics that can be taken into consideration that have not yet been introduced into this type of waiting room furniture scenario: personal space and privacy. These two characteristics have been a part of the furniture that has been designed for different airports, schools, libraries, or big waiting room areas in different buildings and corporations. 22
Most privacy chairs can be considered to be big, bulky, and spacious which would make it impractical for the space, and the arrangement of most common doctor waiting rooms, while most health care chairs are considered to be small, confined and light.
23
24
Could there be a doctor’s waiting room chair that allows patients to feel privacy, and help them reduce any type of stress or anxiety to improve their consultation?
25
DESIGN PROCESS
IDEATION SKETCHES
These sketches are the beginnings of the exploration of form. I was mainly thinking about privacy and possibilities of arrangement.
28
After some explorations, I decided to simplify the form, and focus on the privacy aspect. I decided to keep chair shape simple, and let it slowly evolve around the idea of making the patients feel comfortable and less stressed.
29
30
These are some sketches of the different explorations of privacy. With these explorations I was playing with different forms and heights, while keeping the base and the seat the same.
31
SKETCH MODELS
These are some of the quick models created to explore shape and scale. I was able to find proportions and interesting ways of approaching privacy.
32
From the models made, this particular one caught my attention the most. I thought that with the different sections, I could approach some of the problems patients are facing while waiting at the doctor.
33
FORM REFINEMENT
After developing the form, I decided to move from a squared shape to a round one, because it gave the sections a better transition, and look. The seat of the chair is hidden inside the section for aesthetics proposes. There is a gap in between every section to make it look lighter. 34
TEST FORMS
These are some of the different test pieces that I created before the final product. I tested different upholsteries, and cushions, as well as the vending of the veneer and the assembly. 35

STRUCTURE
Every chair configuration shares the same structural components: - The legs, which are connected with a metal plate that screws on to the bottom of the seat. -The metal rods, which hold the arms together and allow for multiple configurations. - The spacers, which give the distance in between each section. 53
ASSEMBLY

1: Insert the metal rods in the corresponding hole.

MATERIALS & UPHOLSTERY
58
MATERIALS
POLYPROPYLENE
OAK
The INSULA family comes in a variety of woods and woven polypropylene upholstery colors. The outer body of the chair is made out of wood veneers, such as oak,
MAPLE
maple, and walnut. The polypropylene upholstery fabric was chosen
WALNUT
because of its strong structure and long lasting qualities. This material is used to make water bottles. It is a great heat insulator, and non water absorbent.
59
60
UPHOLSTERY
The upholstery of each chairs is done in a thickness gradient for the body to sit on it more comfortably and provide a better lumbar support.
61
USER SCENARIO
63
FUNCTION After analyzing the different observation and survey results, I was able to choose what aspects needed to be taken into account to improve patients experience. I decided to focus in three main functionalities:
What do you normally do while waiting?

PHONE READING OTHER

FACE BLOCKING - Increases comfort levels - Reduces anxiety - Eliminates social interaction PARTIAL VISIBILITY - Allows for some visibility - Increases confidence - Makes patients aware PHONE PRIVACY - Creates a shield - Information feels protected - Patients feel secure
65
ARRANGEMENT
66
Because of its modularity, the INSULA family can be arranged in different ways, depending on the space available. By combining different chair heights in the room, you give patients the option of privacy, and a variety of seats to chose from.

MANY THANKS TO: During my last semester I experienced a bad ankle sprain, which made it harder, and more challenging to do my work. I am very blessed to have an amazing big product design family that did not let me behind. I want to thank all my friends, and family; they were always there to support me, and make sure I was fine. I would also like to thank all the technicians from the CNC lab, the wood shop, and the metal shop for always being nice, and helpful. Finally I would like to thank all my professors for all the knowledge, and feedback. Parsons has been an incredible journey thanks to all of you.
