Concentrations Students can choose one of five concentrations: • Cities and Social Justice • Conflict and Security • Development • Governance and Rights • Media and Culture
Students fulfill a concentration by taking a foundation course as well as three concentration electives. The concentrations offer opportunities for applied research and connections to the International Field Program and other opportunities for engaged learning. Curriculum The MA program combines core courses with a wide range of electives and opportunities for social research and hands-on experience. The curriculum consists of: Two core courses—6 credits Two courses in economics and research methods—6 credits Four concentration courses— 12 credits (optional) Four electives (12 credits) if one chooses a concentration, or eight electives (24 credits) Capstone Project—6 credits
MASTER OF SCIENCE Our innovative modular MS degree allows early- to mid-career professionals to tailor their graduate studies to their specific interests and career goals. The modular structure makes it possible to combine skills and substantive knowledge drawing from courses in international affairs as well as other programs in social research, design, and media. The MS can be pursued on a full-time or part-time basis. To apply, students must have at least three years of professional experience. Returned Peace Corps volunteers with two years of service may be considered. Modules The MS curriculum allows students to focus on subject and skill areas that further professional development in their chosen field. Each student selects one of the subject modules and one of the critical tools and analysis modules.

Graduate Programs
Our 42-credit Master of Arts (MA) degree program is designed for students beginning their careers in international affairs. MA students select from five concentrations, enabling them to specialize in a particular area of international affairs. They also develop a wide range of tools and skills required to enter the international field and gain hands-on experience through fieldbased learning opportunities in New York City and beyond. Students can pursue the degree on a full-time or part-time basis.

The New School’s graduate programs in international affairs offer students unique opportunities to engage with global problems in the heart of New York City. Students challenge and see beyond conventional wisdom and benefit from field-based learning, small classes, a distinguished faculty, and flexible study options. Students in the master’s degrees and graduate summer programs come from diverse academic backgrounds, from global and area studies to the social sciences and media studies. The faculty consists of research scholars from around the world as well as leading experts and professionals in New York who bring their real-world international experience to the classroom. Dynamic Approaches to Global Issues International affairs students at The New School have access to university resources and institutes including:
• Research and fellowship opportunities through the university’s Observatory on Latin America, India China Institute, Vera List Center for Art and Politics, and Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility • Multidisciplinary social research courses at The New School for Social Research • Extracurricular research opportunities, including the Global Urban Futures Project, Equity for Children, Engage Media Lab, and The New Context a global alumni network Our alumni community comprises a global network of more than 1,400 graduates. Graduates of International Affairs programs work in public and government service, international organizations, NGOs and nonprofits, academia, the media, and the private sector. Recent graduates hold professional positions at major international organizations such as UNICEF, MSNBC, the World Bank, Save the Children, the Peace Corps, Doctors Without Borders, the city of Buenos Aires, and Accenture.
STUDIO SEries The Studio series is a new study option designed to place collaboration and engaged learning at the center of the MA and MS degree curriculum. Studios integrate on-campus courses with fieldbased experiences abroad during the winter and summer breaks, giving students the opportunity to expand their research beyond the semester and outside of the classroom. International Affairs programs currently offer Studios on urban issues in Cuba, migration in southern Europe, women’s cooperatives in Colombia, and
FIELD-BASED LEARNING The Studley Graduate Programs in International Affairs are rooted in real-world projects that give students the relevant knowledge, training, and confidence they need to enter the professional arena as effective policymakers, advocates, and researchers. Students take advantage of in-person, on-site learning opportunities around the world and just off campus in New York City. International field program The International Field Program (IFP) enables students to spend nine summer weeks working and conducting research with community-based organizations, NGOs, and government agencies around the world. They gain hands-on experience abroad while following a rigorous course of study, combining in-country seminars, professional internships, and independent research with faculty supervision. Since 2001, there have been IFP sites in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe, with new sites frequently being developed. United Nations summer study program The UN Summer Study program puts students on the ground in the UN and in New York City. The seven-week program goes beyond conventional security and diplomacy issues to investigate development, human rights, humanitarian action, peacebuilding, and environmental issues. Coursework prepares students to understand and engage with contemporary global governance, while practicums provide hands-on experience in UN consultancy work.
