“ WE EMBRACE THE COMPLEXITIES OF 21ST-CENTURY LIFE WITH INTELLECTUAL RIGOR AND CREATIVITY.”
— Tim Marshall
Provost, The New School
The New School offers some of the nation’s most renowned graduate, professional degree, and certificate programs. These distinguished offerings include art and design at Parsons, the social sciences at The New School for Social Research, and classical music and drama at our College of Performing Arts, along with professional management and public policy, media and communications, creative writing, and international affairs. Integrating the New School tradition of combining in-class and in-the-field work, each program guides graduate students through convention-defying courses of study. You work closely with a faculty of prominent, globally
respected artists, scholars, and professionals who are engaged in highly relevant work, are frequently published, and bring with them a network of invaluable contacts. Graduate students benefit from the university’s location in the heart of New York City and our strong ties to the city’s diverse communities of intellectuals, business leaders, writers, artists, designers, and social and political activists. Many classes are held in the evenings to accommodate busy schedules. A few graduate degrees can also be completed online. Learn more at newschool.edu/gradprograms.
ADMISSION TO GRADUATE SCHOOL The New School is a learning community. We look for students who will both contribute to and benefit from our university. Each program has its own criteria for admission. Below is a list of general application requirements: –– An online application –– Official transcripts –– Letters of recommendation –– A CV or résumé –– A statement of purpose or personal/ academic essays –– Academic writing sample/portfolio (required for some programs) –– GRE (required for some programs) –– TOEFL/IELTS/PTE (required for some applicants for whom English is not their first language) A clear understanding of a program is essential to the application process. For complete information, visit the website for the school or individual program published in this brochure, or contact the Office of Admission (see reverse).
Admission to Doctoral Studies In general, students must enter through a New School master’s program and petition for admission to the doctoral program after completing the master’s degree requirements. In certain programs, applicants with an equivalent master’s degree (typically in the same major) from another university are occasionally admitted directly into doctoral study.

Students build new knowledge through research, become critical and creative scholars, and learn to grapple with the tensions of contemporary society.
