THE HEALTHY GEEZER Q. How important is exercise when you are a senior? Is it worth the risks of hurting yourself? All the current scientific evidence shows that geezers should exercise, even though many older people think it could harm them. Study after study demonstrates that seniors hurt their health a lot more by being sedentary.

5. Some soreness and slight fatigue are normal after muscle-building exercises. Exhaustion, sore joints, and painful muscle pulls are not normal.

If you’re inactive, you deteriorate. Physical activity can help restore your capacity. Most older adults, regardless of age or condition, will benefit from increasing physical activity to a moderate level.

7. Stretching should never cause pain, especially joint pain.

Warning: If you want to begin a new exercise program, you should consult your physician and request a list of exercises that are best for your age and physical condition. Four types of exercise are important for your health. These are exercises for strength, balance, stretching and endurance. Strength exercises build muscle and raise your metabolism. Doing these exercises will help to keep your weight down.

6. Always warm up before stretching exercises.

8. Never bounce into a stretch; make slow steady movements instead. 9. To prevent injuries, use safety equipment such as helmets for biking. 10. You should be able to talk during endurance exercises. Measuring your progress can motivate you. Test yourself before starting to exercise to get a baseline score. Test and record your scores each month. The following are some tests you can use, if your doctor approves.

Balance exercises help prevent falls and, therefore, will keep you from breaking yourself and losing your independence. Each year, U.S. hospitals have 300,000 admissions for broken hips; many of them are the result of falls.

* For endurance, see how far you can walk in exactly six minutes.

Stretching exercises give you more freedom of movement. And endurance exercises raise your pulse and breathing.

* For upper-body strength, record how much weight you lift and how many times you lift that weight.

Here are 10 tips to make any exercise program safe:

* For balance, time yourself as you stand on one foot, without support, for as long as possible. Have someone stand near you in case you lose your balance. Repeat the test while standing on the other foot.

1. Don’t hold your breath during strength exercises. This could affect your blood pressure. 2. When lifting weights, use smooth, steady movements. Breathe out as you lift or push a weight, and breathe in as you relax. 3. Avoid jerking or thrusting movements. 4. Avoid locking the joints of your arms and legs into a strained position.

* For lower-body strength, time yourself as you walk up a flight of stairs as fast as you can safely.

3 TIPS to Keep Your Pets Cool This Summer Summertime can be full of fun for your furry friends, but the heat poses a danger to them. Below are a few ways you can help cool them down on particularly warm days. Puppy Pops: So cute and very tasty, these icy treats make for a great summertime treat. Mix Greek yogurt and dog-safe diced fruit into a silicon mold and freeze overnight. Keeps up to 1 week in the freezer. Cat Cave: Set up a cool, dark space just for your cat. It could be a cardboard box near an air vent or even a blanket nest under a bed. Cats will love having a place of their own to retreat to when the day is at its hottest. Frequent Breaks: No matter if you’re playing indoors or out, be sure to rest with your pet frequently in order to save you both from heatstroke.

Cataracts are cloudy areas in your eye’s lens that happen when normal proteins break down and form clumps. They distort your vision and have the potential to completely rob you of your eyesight.

3. Eat the Rainbow: A Nurses’ Health Study revealed that women who ate higher amounts of vegetables and fruits were half as likely to develop cataracts as women who didn’t maintain a balanced diet. Brightly colored produce is chock full of all kinds of antioxidants which neutralize free radicals that take from the healthy cells in your eye, leaving them damaged.

The good news: You don’t have to see the world behind frosted glass. You have some control. Here’s what you need to know about cataracts: prevention, treatments, and, yes, cures. There are five major things you can do to prevent cataracts from forming: Book an Eye Exam: Even if you have 20/20 vision, the American Optometric Association says it’s a good idea for all adults to have regular eye checkups every two years until age 65, and every year after that. The first signs can show in your 40s, so the sooner your doctor can diagnose the formation of cataracts, the better. 1. Keep Your Shades On: More than just a style statement, sunglasses also blunt the effects of strong exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light rays which can break down the proteins in your eyes. 2. Sweat Regularly: The clear connection between obesity and eye diseases is still being examined, researchers at the Centre for Eye Research Australia believe that carrying too many pounds may overwhelm the body’s immune system and harm lens proteins.

4. Quit Tobacco: Tobacco smoke cuts the supply of antioxidants in your eye. Heavy smokers, who go through 15 or more cigarettes a day, have three times the risk of developing cataracts as nonsmokers. The good news: Quitting drops the threat of cataracts. Often, surgery can fix a cataract. During the procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision in the eye to remove the lens and replace it with an artificial lens implant called an intraocular lens (IOL). Cataract surgery is one of the most successful and safest procedures out there, but it isn’t for everyone. If crystal-clear vision isn’t super important to your life or your vision isn’t bothering you, you may want to hold off and monitor it.

“I’m not about lionizing Elvis,” says Australian director/producer/writer Baz Luhrmann, the driving force behind the forthcoming big-budget Elvis biopic. “I just saw him as the best canvas on which to explore America in the modern age, the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s. I saw the story of the Colonel and Elvis as a really great prism through which to explore the latter part of the 20th century.” We first meet the future megastar as a poor southern boy, played by 14-year-old Australian actor Chaydon Jay. He sets the stage for the Image from IMDb adult Elvis, portrayed just about perfectly by former child actor Austin Butler, recently seen as Manson murderer Charles “Tex” Watson in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Over the years, numerous biopics have covered the life stories of many early rock legends, including Ray Charles, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Bobby Darin and Tina Turner. But none of these artists, talented and popular as they may have been, came close to matching the worldwide impact of Elvis Aron Presley. Luhrmann’s offering focuses on the final two decades of Presley’s life and career, as well as the tumultuous relationship he endured with Andreas van Kruijk, an illegal immigrant from Holland who called himself “Colonel” Tom Parker. Through barely recognizable Tom Hanks, we come to know the dark side and

sheer ruthlessness of the carnival barker-turned-hustler music promoter who steered Presley to international celebrity. At one point, Parker tells the future icon, “We are the same, you and I. We are two odd, lonely children reaching for eternity.” Parker smoothed out Elvis’s rough edges (so important to his early persona and fame) and goaded and guided him through vacuous movies with insipid soundtracks before Presley returned to live performances for adoring Las Vegas audiences.

Tips for Traveling Smart This Summer By Jan Larraine Cox

If you’re like me, you’re ready to get out and see the world again after a long hiatus from frequent traveling. Before you go, it is a good idea to go over tested travel tips that have served other travelers in good stead over the years. First off, make sure to get your medical documents and duplicate prescriptions together in a compact folder or card available at most pharmacies. This states medical conditions, allergies and your blood type. Medic-Alert, a non-profit foundation, will maintain whatever medical data you give them on their computers, easily retrieved from anywhere in the world by a phone call, as well as providing an identification bracelet if desired. You can do this by visiting www. medicalert.org. Check online with the CDC to determine which vaccines you need for the area you’ll be traveling in well in advance of your trip to account for any reaction. Take two of everything medical, such as prescription glasses, contact lenses and any special dental equipment you use, including floss. Since Medicare is not valid outside America, add lowcost travel insurance for a medical emergency or for trip cancellation/postponement. Some travel companies waive a pre-existing condition if you purchase the insurance within 14 days of the booking date. Now the fun stuff: packing what you will wear on your exciting trip! Coordinate your wardrobe around a single color. Separates are then easier to mix and match. Check the weather forecast for your destination just before you leave so you can prepare for a summer cool spell by layering your clothes. Pack light!

Roll your clothes with buttons buttoned, which decreases wrinkling. Re-purpose cleaner bags between layers to minimize wrinkling, and hang clothes in the destination bathroom when showering. Pack some old clothes you’d like to leave behind after use to make room for new items you purchase. Make a list of everything you need to take with you, including a journal, facecloth, light raincoat, safety pins, sunscreen. Minimize liquids that can leak: tape them! Create your own travel first aid kit and include your prescription medicines, ibuprofen, aspirin, anti-diarrheal, antihistamines, hydrocortisone cream, insect repellant, motion sickness remedy, antiseptic towelettes, tweezers, bandages and small scissors. Start a plane trip wellrested and hydrated, avoid alcohol and caffeine: drink water or juice in the dry cabin, to reduce jet lag. However, jet lag is a result of rapidly shifting three or more time zones, so it may be inevitable. During the flight, stretch your neck, legs, feet and use good posture. Try to arrive during daylight so you can explore the sights there and adjust to the new time zone before sleeping. A popular option is choosing a reputable packaged trip that usually includes many solo travelers. Tapping into the expertise of seasoned leaders offers special activities hard to beat independently. Be polite, smile and reach out to other travelers and the leader, letting them know early if something goes wrong, in case they can correct it.

Hurricane Season Begins: Tips, Prep and What to Expect By Rebecca Fending

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this year might be one of the worst yet for hurricanes in terms of frequency and strength. With that comes the need and urgency to have a plan to keep you, your family and your pets safe. THE KIT Like most everyone in the danger zone for hurricane season, it’s important that you put together a hurricane preparedness kit for survival. This kit should be built in a waterproof container to preserve the contents should flooding occur in your home. Fill the kit with first aid supplies, flashlights, a radio, shelf-stable foods, extra prescription doses, a spare set of glasses (if possible), a portable charger for all electronic devices (including cell phones) and even a few spare sets of clothes, including undergarments. For a complete guide to packing a hurricane survival kit and other survival tips for preparedness, visit www.ready.gov. PET PLANNING It’s also important to pack and plan for your pets in the event of an evacuation. It’s best to pack cans of wet food, that way the food is shelf-stable and will remain untouched by water. Be sure to also include any medications your pet needs, including any CBD treats, as an evacuation or natural disaster situation can be just as stressful for pets as it is for humans. Be sure that your pets are up-to-date on their heartworm medication, as well. In the wake of hurricane damage, there tends to be standing water which offers a breeding ground for mosquitos. If your pet is not microchipped, now is the time to make sure they are. In the event that you are separated from your

pet, you need a way to be able to relocate and claim them. Most veterinarians charge around $10 for microchipping, so be sure to make an appointment as soon as possible as we enter hurricane season. WHAT TO EXPECT As mentioned at the beginning of this article, NOAA expects that this season will prove to be “above average” for those on the Atlantic coast, with up to 21 named storms from June to November. However, don’t let this scare you, as this is the seventh consecutive year that’s been expected to be above average. “The increased activity anticipated this hurricane season is attributed to several climate factors, including the ongoing La Niña that is likely to persist throughout the hurricane season, warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, weaker tropical Atlantic trade winds and an enhanced west African monsoon,” NOAA said in a press release. Plan as best you can, which means preparing for the worst but hoping for the best. Stay safe this hurricane season!

For those of us with pets, we have to worry about both our furry friends and ourselves when it comes to fun in the sun. Overheating, dehydration and, yes, even sunburn can affect our furry friends in the warmer months. Here are just a few ways you can help keep your furever friends safe this summer: HYDRATION STATION Make sure your cat or dog has cool fresh water at all times. Add ice cubes to the water or even give them to your pets as a fun, cool treat on hot days or after a few minutes in the sun. If your pup is especially fond of crunching ice cubes, try freezing pet-friendly fruits and veggies in the cubes. Produce such as blueberries, apples, bananas, cucumbers and raspberries make great frozen treats for summer-loving pups. DON’T INVITE THEM TO THE BARBECUE Although most of us treat our pets like family, it’s best to leave them off the guestlist for any barbecues or cookouts you may host this summer. Most foods found in traditional cookout spreads are poisonous to dogs and cats, leading to an unpleasant end of the merriment. The following products are extremely poisonous to pets: raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate, and sugar-free gum, candies and baked goods with the artificial sweetener Xylitol, also known as Birch Sugar.

Aside from lethargy and a lack of desire to exercise in steamy conditions, there are health concerns related to physical activity and heat. If you typically exercise or engage in physical activities outdoors, precautions should be taken to guard against the effects of the heat and humidity. Heat-related illness is no joke. Dehydration, cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can cause a spectrum of symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to a downright medical emergency. According to an article by the Mayo Clinic, the skin, blood vessels and perspiration levels typically adjust to an increase in the body’s core temperature. However, these natural cooling systems can fail when exposed to high temperatures and humidity for a prolonged period, particularly if you are sweating heavily or if you don't drink enough fluids. Having taught aquatic fitness for the past 20 years on miserably hot pool decks, indoors and outdoors, I can attest to the serious side effects of getting overheated. “The Candy Man” by Sammy Davis, Jr. BY: RANDAL C. HILL “It’s horrible. It’s white bread; it’s ‘cute-ums’.” Sammy Davis, Jr., couldn’t imagine singing lyrics that included such cloying phrases as “groovy lemon pies.” But Davis was being pressured to record “The Candy Man” by his manager and Mike Curb, the 26-year-old hotshot president of MGM Records. Curb was convinced that the song had “hit” written all over it—but only if done by Sammy. Before he approached the legendary vocalist, Curb recruited his 16-member recording group—the Mike Curb Congregation—to tape a childlike background for “The Candy Man.” As a member of the legendary Rat Pack, Sammy had earned celebrity by performing for sophisticated adult audiences. Was he willing to risk his reputation by recording a featherweight kiddie ditty? Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was the classic 1971 movie based on the 1964 book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by children’s writer Roald Dahl. In Dahl’s novel, the main character is Charlie Bucket, who, along with four other juveniles, visits a candy factory owned by the eccentric chocolatier Willie Wonka. British entertainment partners Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse had created the music for the film’s soundtrack. The first tune heard is “The Candy Man.” Sung by actor Aubrey Woods as the neighborhood candy-store owner named Bill, the shopkeeper enthusiastically extols the magical properties of Wonka’s seductive sweets.

Woods did a serviceable job on the tune, but Newley hated the rather stiff rendition and felt that Woods’s version could easily doom a potential hit single. Newley decided to record his own interpretation, but Mike Curb got the jump on him. Focused on a forthcoming trip to Vietnam to entertain the troops, he hurried through “The Candy Man” in two takes. When he listened to the playback in the recording studio, Davis moaned, “This record is going straight into the toilet, and it may just pull my whole career down with it.” To his amazement (but not Curb’s), the single caught the nation’s ear when music fans of all ages embraced the joy that Davis offered here. “The Candy Man” shot to Number One on Billboard’s chart and even earned a Grammy nomination. In time, the 45 topped playlists worldwide. “There are lots of regional hits, but rarely does a record become an international hit,” Davis explained later, probably with a smile and perhaps a slight feeling of guilt. “With a 5% royalty, I made half a million dollars.”

If your mother’s home has appreciated significantly, adding you as a joint owner on her deed will end up costing you much more in capital gain taxes when you sell the home after she dies then what you will save by avoiding probate. For example, let’s say your mother’s house was worth $100,000.00 when she bought it, but the day she dies its worth $300,000.00. If you inherit the home, you will also inherit the stepped-up basis (or date of death value) of $300,000.00. This means that if you then sell the home,

However, if you are added to your mother’s deed, you will receive the stepped-up bases in only half of the value of your mother’s home when she dies. If you turn around and sell the home, you will be stuck with significant capital gain taxes on one-half of the appreciated value of $200,000.00 of your mother’s home. A much better approach would be for your mother to place her home into a “Living” Trust naming you as the beneficiary. Not only will the time, expense and aggravation associated with probate be avoided, but you will have no tax liability when you sell the home.

Adventure Island Opens New Slides, Lounge in Water Park’s Biggest Makeover Information from TampaBay.com Visitors to Adventure Island water park in Tampa are now swimming in the park’s biggest makeover in 30 years. The park reopened for the season in March, but the improvements weren’t finished. They finally showed off the new digs mid-May, open just in time for summer vacation season. “We have a lot of high-thrill rides, and we decided we needed to cater to families so they can ride together and experience their first thrills together. These two rides do that perfectly,” said Brandon Thom, vice president of Adventure Island. Wahoo Remix, formerly known as Wahoo Run, gives two meanings to the word “remix” in retooling the tube slide’s enclosed tunnels that were once dark with synchronized light features. There’s also a new mix of songs, from Dynamite by South Korean boy band BTS to Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer. There are 10 songs in all, so you are likely to hear a different song every time you go down the 600-foot slide. The new Rapids Racer has a height limit of 42 inches, the size of an average 4-year-old. It can turn into a competition as the two-person rafts race in a side-by-side experience. They pass each other at certain points in the clover leaf-shaped run that spins the riders through what the park claims is “the world’s first dueling saucers” in between tunnels and turns. In March, Adventure Island opened the new Hang Ten Tiki Bar, its first fullservice bar with cocktails, snacks and local craft brews. Its drink list includes a hefty number of rums, 20 in all. Half of them are Florida-made, including Big 5 rum from New Port Richey and Old St. Pete Righteous rum. You can get a “short board” of four shots of any of the rums for $15.99. The new beach lounge area near the Surfside Cafe is lined with palms and shrubs and trees of various heights to offer shade for dozens of lounge and beach chairs, a couple of hammocks and bench swings. The park, which opened in 1980 with just a few pools and play areas, now has 10 water slides, two pools, a lazy river and splash play areas on its 30acre property. The water park across the street from Busch Gardens opens at 10 am daily, closing between 5-7 pm depending on the day, at 10001 McKinley Drive, Tampa. Entry is $44.99-$55.99, depending on the date. “IT WAS JUST DRIVEL!” BY RANDAL C. HILL “I was in heaven, learning as much as I could learn. I loved, loved, loved every minute of it,” Sally Field once enthused to a writer from O, The Oprah Magazine. High praise for Sally’s time spent as The Flying Nun? Actually, no. Field was waxing nostalgic about her first television series, Gidget, a 1965 show on ABC-TV based on the Sandra Dee movie of the same name. (In 1959, Gidget had kicked off the beach party/ surfing film craze of the early 1960s.) Sally’s remembrance of her Flying Nun years was quite different. She had landed the Gidget role right out of Birmingham High School in the Los Angeles suburb of Van Nuys, shortly after she was spotted by a casting agent at an acting workshop. When Gidget folded after a year of mediocre ratings, Field was devastated. She was then offered the lead role in another ABC-TV series, this time as a Puerto Rico-based Catholic sister who could soar through the air. (The Flying Nun was based on Tere Rios’s 1965 book The Fifteenth Pelican.)

later requested more depth to the Nun scripts, Field was told, “[People] want to know what they’re going to see before they see it. They don’t want to be touched. They don’t want to be surprised. They don’t want to think.” The series ran for three years— from 1967 to 1970—for a total of 82 episodes. It quickly became a ratings winner, but as the weekly stories unfolded, viewership dropped steadily. By the third year, the show was on life support. In the meantime, Sally had married her first husband, Steve Craig, and was pregnant during the last season’s filming. (“You can only imagine what a pregnant flying nun looked like. I was a walking sight gag.”) The show’s producers used props and scenery to block the view of Field’s body below the chest.

But eventually, Sally came to realize that the time she spent on The Flying Nun did, to her surprise, have an actual upside. “Something in me started to take care of myself in a way that I hadn’t been able to before,” she said later. “I started to change and heal. I grew up and moved out of the fog. And ultimately, the experience of being on the series gave me tremendous strength. It made me want to be a real actor, no matter what.”

Her stepfather was a stuntman/actor named Jock Mahoney, who Sally found intimidating and controlling. When Mahoney warned her, “If you don’t take this part, you may never work again,” Sally capitulated and signed to play the cartoonish sister. When she

With summer well on its way, safety is the name of the season in more ways than one. Here are just a few ways you can keep yourself safe this summer: Hurricane Season Tips As the activity for this year is expected to be “above average” by experts, now more than ever it is important to include the following in your hurricane safety kit: • Water (one gallon per person per day for several days; for drinking and sanitation) • Food (at least a several-day supply of non-perishable food) • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert • Flashlight • First aid kit • Extra batteries • Whistle (to signal for help) • Dust mask (to help filter contaminated air) • Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to shelter in place) • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for personal sanitation) • Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities) • Manual can opener (for food) • Local maps • Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery For more information, visit ready.gov/kit. Summer Hydration The best way to fight off summer heat is to stay hydrated and keep your electrolytes up, especially when sweating. This also helps avoid heatstroke and other heat-related conditions. Below are a few foods that help keep electrolytes and hydration in check: • Dairy: Milk and yogurt are excellent sources of calcium, making them a great workout recovery snack or drink. • Bananas: Bananas are known to be the king of all potassiumcontaining fruits and veggies. With about 422mg of potassium per banana, we can see why. • Coconut Water: For a quick energy and electrolyte boost during or after a workout, try coconut water. Coconut water contains about 600mg of potassium and 252mg of sodium per cup. • Watermelon: Watermelon is loaded with good-for-you nutrients like natural sugars, potassium and water. • Avocado: Avocados are loaded with potassium. In fact, just 1 avocado can contain approximately 975mg of potassium, that’s double that of a banana. Sun Safety Living in Florida, it’s a given that sunburns have an increased likelihood of occurring. Preventing a sunburn can include things such as physical coverings from the sun (clothes, hats, umbrellas, etc.), sunblock and limiting your time in the sun to just a few minutes. However, for postsunburn care, it’s best to stay hydrated in many ways: with water, hydrating topically with lotions and aloe, and minimizing inflammation with ibuprofen or other NSAIDs. No matter how you plan to enjoy the season, be sure to do so in a way that is safest for you!
