Q Q Once September makes an appearance, it has a way of making us feel as though fall has arrived. The temperatures may still be balmy, but the promise of the coziest time of year can’t be beaten. And although most of us aren’t quite ready for pumpkin spicedrenched treats, the end of summer is joyous enough to celebrate. First celebrated in 1979, each September also holds Grandparents’ Day. This year, it’s on the 12th. This day has a few different rumored origins, all of which end with President Jimmy Carter proclaiming the national holiday. According to some sources, Grandparents’ Day was first formally suggested by 9-year-old Russel Capper in 1969 through a letter sent to President Carter advocating for the need for a holiday dedicated to grandparents. However, others claim that Senator Jennings Randolph introduced a resolution to the Senate for the national observance of the day in 1977. After Congress passed the legislation, President Carter proclaimed National Grandparents Day in 1978. Whatever the origin of this holiday, the purpose remains the same: to honor and celebrate grandchildren’s favorite couple of people. While specifics are really up to your family on how exactly to observe the day, don’t forget to pamper yourself, too! What better opportunity than this month to treat yourself to something you’ve wanted for a long time? This could be

anything from visiting a beach or nature park that’s been on your “must-see” list to even treating yourself to something off your wish list. This month also happens to be self-improvement month. And although I consider our readers perfect as-is, there’s always room for person enhancements. The hardest part of anything is finding the motivation to start. So, here are just a few ideas to kick start your month of selfimproving: Self-improvement goals: Of course, your goals should be tailored to your life. However, if you’re wondering what kind of specific goals are common for self-improvement journeys, they are endless. For some, they include honing productivity and time-management skills. For others, improving focus, positivity, selfconfidence or even finding and sticking to a healthier lifestyle constitutes self-improvement goals. There are tons of other objectives that require either internal or external work (or both) to achieve results. If you need more inspiration, try searching for “self-improvement goals” online. Reaching those goals: If you’ve set goals for yourself, working towards them may require an outside source to help guide you. This can be in the form of a book, podcast or even online resources. However, if you’re looking to pave your own way, remember that baby steps are a great way to ensure your success. Doing too much at one time can lead to resignation. Be sure to set yourself up for success by being realistic about your particular ambitions. So, in the interest of giving back to your grandchildren for Grandparents’ Day, consider diving into any personal improvements you’ve been putting off. There’s no time like the present and no place like now.

HOW TO CELEBRATE GRANDPARENTS’ DAY WITH GRANDKIDS BY REBECCA FENDING Grandparents’ Day is Sunday, September 12, and if you’re looking for ways to spend time with your grandkids, there are a ton of different ways you can celebrate your day all month long. Whether you’re looking for free, cheap or if a budget isn’t part of the equation, here are several ways to make this Grandparents’ Day the best yet. If you have grandkids that vary in ages, you can’t go wrong with a nature walk. Florida has several different parks, preserves and lakes that offer great spots for some fun in the sun. Below are a few places perfect for a family outing. LITTLE MANATEE RIVER STATE PARK: At $5 per vehicle and located in Wimauma, this state park holds ecosystems unique to its protected area. Search for other beaches in your area online and navigate directly to them! Another great idea for a day with the grandkids is the zoo. Whether you choose one closest to you, or if you’re up for a road trip, Florida has many zoos with both exotic and native animals. Learn more about the critters in your backyard, or find your new favorite animal with your grandkids by your side. Snap a few pictures and immortalize the day forever! When in doubt, you can’t go wrong with a trip to Disney World, Legoland or Busch Gardens. “Maggie May” by Rod Stewart BY: RANDAL C. HILL Roderick David Stewart was born in London in 1945, the youngest of five children of a construction foreman and a stay-at-home mother. He quit school at age 15 to work a variety of menial jobs, including that of gravedigger. Music became Rod’s free-time obsession, and he took up the guitar, the banjo and the harmonica, although he always preferred singing. Later, mimicking such American soul stars as Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, Stewart sang with numerous bands before ending up in the iconic UK outfit Small Faces. He recorded both as the Small Faces front man and a solo artist. The first two Rod Stewart albums didn’t bring him fame or fortune, but his third effort— Every Picture Tells a Story—made Rod Stewart’s name known throughout the music world, thanks to a hit single based on an event from his adolescence. Years before America’s Woodstock and Monterey Pop concerts, England had the Beaulieu Jazz Festival. Held annually since 1956 in the town of Hampshire, the outdoor gathering offered music as well as a chance for hip young Brits to dress in bizarre outfits and “get wild” away from their own neighborhoods. In July 1961, Rod and some pals snuck onto the festival grounds and headed for the beer tent. There, Stewart met a woman about twice his age. “One thing led to the next, and we ended up nearby on a secluded patch of lawn,” he recalled years later.

Inspired by his introduction to manhood, Stewart eventually filled about 20 notebook pages with a fantasy yarn about a complicated and erratic relationship. He later developed that tale into a storysong about the trials and tribulations of a life shared with an older lady. Curiously, Stewart’s multi-million-selling “Maggie May” had almost been left off his Every Picture Tells a Story LP, as the tune had no chorus and no hook, just a bunch of rambling verses. The future smash—recorded in just two takes—was released as the B-side of Rod’s 45 “Reason to Believe,” a Tim Hardin ballad. But disc jockeys soon flipped the single, and seemingly overnight “Maggie May” handed the sandpaper-voiced rock ‘n’ roller his first international winner.

Transitioning to Self-Improvement BY JAN LARRAINE COX

2021 has been a year to take serious stock of one’s life, a year of making choices. Gallup Polls (gallup.com) conducted a Global Emotions Poll for the past 15 years in 145 countries. They found in 2020, “... the world was sadder, angrier, more worried and more stressed” than ever before in the history of the poll. Many peoples’ spirits have flattened during the prolonged pandemic. Yet, there are examples all around us of people strengthening one another. Being aware and responding to others’ needs can help spread joy and hope. It’s a time to be gentle with others and yourself and to try and make things easier. Author William Bridges, in his book “Transitions: Making Sense of Life’s Changes,” says the mind is a vessel that must be emptied if the new wine is to be put in. He points out in this book that disenchantment with your new reality is a signal that things are now moving into transition. Bridges quotes poet Robert Frost who wrote about being “lost enough to find yourself” in a state of disorientation. In other words, the old sense of your life as going somewhere starts to break down, leaving some feeling like shipwrecked sailors. During the pandemic, many of us have occasionally lost track of the days; time takes on a different meaning. Disorientation today affects our sense of the future and our plans for it. Bridges points out that we need to deal with a time of nothing before we can move on to find something new; this can conjure up fear. For many of us, this experience of a “neutral zone” of existence feels like emptiness in which the old reality now looks less solid while we try to understand the gap we are living in before the next life phase occurs. Bridges says the first neutral zone activity is surrender: the Lifestyles After 50 • September 2021 • 10

person gives in to the emptiness and stops struggling to escape it. The sense of emptiness between the old life and the new is important: It is the primal state of pure energy to which the person returns for a new beginning, Bridges explains. Yet, Bridges communicates that the real source of renewal comes with the process of disintegration in the neutral zone, which can then lead to reintegration. This stage of reintegration is where a person finds true wisdom. One finds the raw material awaiting the builder. As we await the end of the ongoing pandemic, we can find the way out is actually “the way in.” Bridges suggests taking advantage of a few days alone to consciously reflect on the transition process going on in one’s life right now. What an opportune way to take advantage of quarantine isolation! When the neutral zone has done its work, we can emerge ready to take action in self-improvement, energized and motivated by our inner realignment.

Are HIIT Workouts Safe for Older Adults? By Mark Grevelding, personal trainer and creator of PoolFit High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has been popular in the fitness industry for the past several years. You may be wondering exactly what HIIT is and whether or not it is appropriate for your fitness level. Unlike steady-state aerobic exercise, HIIT is a form of interval training that features short bouts of intense exercise, followed by a rest period. HIIT workouts are designed to push the body into an anaerobic state, where you are exercising at 80 to 90% of maximal heartrate. Research shows that HIIT workouts burn more calories in a shorter amount of time and result in greater fat loss, as compared to aerobic workouts. All that sounds good, but the problem is that the exercises in a typical HIIT workout tend to be higher impact, which poses a greater risk of injury. However, there is a solution: Take your HIIT workouts to the pool. In the pool, you can exercise vigorously with little or no joint impact. Surrounded by the water’s viscosity, large movements encounter more resistance, forcing the heart to pump oxygenated blood more forcefully to outstretched limbs. This results in a higher heartrate and a quicker pathway to the anaerobic threshold, where the body stops using oxygen and instead taps into stored energy. HIIT workouts generate fuel from the body’s glucose supplies. Once glucose is depleted, the energy source utilized for the workout is stored body fat. The important thing to know is that you can achieve these results just as effectively in a pool. HIIT water workouts are much more appropriate for seniors due to a lower risk of injury. Regardless of whether you work hard enough to get your heartrate in the anaerobic zone, following along with a HIIT workout in the pool is fun and challenging. Crab-Stuffed Mushrooms BY REBECCA FENDING

Mushrooms are typically in season at all times in Florida, so if you’re looking for a new recipe to spice up the normal rotation, these stuffed mushrooms are sure to do

the trick. Light, low-card but still so satisfying, these mushrooms are sure to be a great meal during the week, or even as an appetizer when hosting.

Serves 12 Ingredients and supplies: • 4 to 6 large portabella mushroom caps (or a package of baby portabellas for bite-sized portions) • Two 6 oz. cans of lump crab meat, or fresh crab equivalent • 4 to 6 oz. room temperature cream cheese

• 1/3 cup of finely chopped green onions (yellow works, too) • 2 cloves fresh minced garlic • 1/2 teaspoon each of garlic powder, onion powder and Old Bay seasoning • Salt and pepper to taste

• ¼ cup each of grated parmesan and shredded mozzarella cheese

• Optional: ½ tablespoon of your favorite hot sauce

• ¼ cup mayonnaise

Don’t You Dare Call Them “Dolls”! BY RANDAL C. HILL

Beginning in 1959, Barbie dolls captured the hearts of young girls everywhere, as well as the wallets of their parents. Competing toy outfits soon sought to offer a male rival—possibly a macho soldier—but how could boys ever be convinced to buy dolls? Rhode Island-based toy maker Hasbro came up with a simple solution: Never refer to them as dolls but as (one’s voice drops a bit lower here) “action figures.” Early on, the Hasbro outfit—owned by three brothers named Hassenfeld—had made headway into the highly lucrative toy field with such moneymakers as Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head. As with other companies, though, the trio was always on the lookout for profitable new endeavors. Inventor Stanley Weston had sold the basic G. I. (for Government Issue) Joe idea to Hasbro. In 1962, company president Merrill Hassenfeld and Don Levine, the head of R&D (research and development) and a Korean War veteran, refined the toy-soldier idea by creating a foot-high flexible plastic man with 21 “points of movement.” The proposed figures would be offered in the uniforms of the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force, along with accessories such as weapons (grenade launchers and bayonets were particularly popular), helmets and miniature vehicles. The soldier’s name would come from the 1945 movie The Story of G. I. Joe, which focused on war correspondent Ernie Pyle. Hasbro’s plastic Joe arrived in fatigues, with an M-1 carbine cradled in his arms and a jagged battle scar across one cheek. To boys, the toy man tacitly signified a chest-thumping patriotism. “The concept of doing a doll for boys in the early 1960s was a big risk,” Hasbro executive Kirk Bozigian admitted. “What parent would let his son play with a doll?” This was when Hasbro decided to market Joe as an action figure. Bozigian explained further. “The sales force was forbidden to use the term ‘doll.’ If anyone referred to it as a doll, they were fined.” Joe was introduced in August 1964 at several New York City stores, most of which were skeptical about its success. But, even at a lofty retail price of $4 (about $25 now), Hasbro’s offering sold out within a week. In 1964 and 1965, sales of G. I. Joes accounted for two thirds of Hasbro’s total sales as their military miniature became the most successful boys’ toy of all time. Changes came and went during Joe’s time as a hot commodity.

In 1967, he was provided with a female companion—G. I. Nurse Action Girl. But toy-buying boys weren’t interested, and the plastic lady soon vanished—only to become collectible years later. As the decade wound down, resistance to the Vietnam War eroded Joe’s popularity. In 1970, Hasbro recast him as a treehugging peacenik. “Adventure Team” Joe featured gear for hunting safaris, scuba-diving and working archeological digs. Patriotic purists balked at the changes, but G. I. Joe would eventually live on through comic books, cartoons, films, TV shows, video games and even a breakfast cereal.

My next step up, was Halston I-12, which became my “signature cologne” for years. It was harder to find than the Halston Z-14, but on a weekend excursion with friends to the Ellenton Outlet Mall, near Bradenton, I discovered a specialty store that carried the I-12. I stocked up. Later on, I started getting hand-me-downs from that same friend, Lee, who also liked smelling pleasant, and had more expensive tastes than me. Some of his colognes were from Europe, primarily England. I still have quite a few of those bottles, huddled together on my bathroom countertop, enough that they will last me ‘til the end of time. They include, Murlhens – Sumatra Rain, Faconalle, St. James of London, Cuba – Paris, and Cuba Royal original by Parfums des Champs. But my very favorites are Tabac original, Terra d’Hermés and my treasured bottle of Caswell-Massey original Newport, which was discontinued years ago. I probably have the only remaining bottle in existence. I once contacted C-M hoping they might have some remaining bottles hidden in a secret warehouse somewhere. No dice! My wife is currently at a rehab center. Each night when we end our time together, whether real-life or virtually, I always ask “What would you like me to bring? Confession of a Couch Potato

I'm all for self-improvement, as long as it doesn't involve exercise. I've become a gym-o-phobe. The mere thought of a sports bra and sneakers can ruin the most perfect day. But perhaps "-phobe" isn't an accurate suffix to explain my condition. I don't fear the gym; I out-andout hate it! This attitude represents a transformation from my former self who was once dedicated to treadmills and StairMasters. Perhaps I took too many steps and am suffering from a case of burn-out. And, although I have succumbed, I'm unable to make peace with my slothfulness. So, heeding the suggestion of motivated friends, I have called into play the following strategies:

machine, not to mention the danger of weight gain. But when I learned how much bouncing was needed to work off an Oreo cookie, I simply decided to forego the cookie. Bribery: If I go to the gym, I should reward myself. Now this was an appealing idea that actually got me into workout attire. But I got sidetracked looking for potential gifts, and before long it was time to go straight home because the dog was starving!

Personal Trainer: If I hired a personal trainer, I couldn't wriggle out of my commitment. So, I hired a trainer who came twice a week. She was a lovely, fit young woman, a perfect role model. By the third week, I experienced a noticeable shift in my attitude. I no longer hated the gym; I hated the trainer.

If he isn’t willing to make the transition from online to real-time, then that is a major red flag and a dealbreaker. You need to walk away. Chances are you are dodging a bullet. With recent Red Tide algal blooms along the Gulf Coast and near Boca Grande Beach, here’s what you can do to keep yourself safe. According to ABC-7, Florida Department of Health in Lee County health officials said some people may have short-lived respiratory symptoms such as eye, nose, and throat irritation similar to cold symptoms. Some people with breathing problems such as asthma might experience more severe symptoms. Symptoms usually go away once a person leaves the area or goes indoors, the department said. Health officials recommend that people experiencing these symptoms stay away from the beach areas or go into an air conditioned area. The Health Department also recommended that residents and visitors do not swim around dead fish at Boca Grande Beach, don’t harvest or eat molluscan shellfish and distressed or dead fish from this location. Pets and livestock should be kept away from the water, sea foam and dead sea life, health officials said. Residents living in beach areas are advised to close windows and run the air conditioner.
