Bettering and Celebrating Yourself

Once September makes an appearance, it has a way of making us feel as though fall has arrived. The temperatures may still be balmy, but the promise of the coziest time of year can’t be beaten. And although most of us aren’t quite ready for pumpkin spicedrenched treats, the end of summer is joyous enough to celebrate.

First celebrated in 1979, each September also holds Grandparents’ Day. This year, it’s on the 12th. This day has a few different rumored origins, all of which end with President Jimmy Carter proclaiming the national holiday. According to some sources, Grandparents’ Day was first formally suggested by 9-year-old Russel Capper in 1969 through a letter sent to President Carter advocating for the need for a holiday dedicated to grandparents. However, others claim that Senator Jennings Randolph introduced a resolution to the Senate for the national observance of the day in 1977. After Congress passed the legislation, President Carter proclaimed National Grandparents Day in 1978.

Whatever the origin of this holiday, the purpose remains the same: to honor and celebrate grandchildren’s favorite couple of people. While specifics are really up to your family on how exactly to observe the day, don’t forget to pamper yourself, too! What better opportunity than this month to treat yourself to something you’ve wanted for a long time? This could be anything from visiting a beach or nature park that’s been on your “must-see” list to even treating yourself to something off your wish list.

This month also happens to be self-improvement month. And although I consider our readers perfect as-is, there’s always room for person enhancements. The hardest part of anything is finding the motivation to start. So, here are just a few ideas to kick start your month of selfimproving:

Self-improvement goals: Of course, your goals should be tailored to your life. However, if you’re wondering what kind of specific goals are common for self-improvement journeys, they are endless. For some, they include honing productivity and time-management skills. For others, improving focus, positivity, selfconfidence or even finding and sticking to a healthier lifestyle constitutes self-improvement goals. There are tons of other objectives that require either internal or external work (or both) to achieve results. If you need more inspiration, try searching for “self-improvement goals” online.

Reaching those goals: If you’ve set goals for yourself, working towards them may require an outside source to help guide you. This can be in the form of a book, podcast or even online resources. However, if you’re looking to pave your own way, remember that baby steps are a great way to ensure your success. Doing too much at one time can lead to resignation. Be sure to set yourself up for success by being realistic about your particular ambitions.

So, in the interest of giving back to your grandchildren for Grandparents’ Day, consider diving into any personal improvements you’ve been putting off. There’s no time like the present and no place like now.
