“Don’t Be Common” — Ann Awbrey Glass 1925-2017

I am pretty sure I have heard that expression my entire life... When I was younger, I took it to mean, don’t be crude or vulgar. As I have gotten older it still means that, but I like to think my Grandmother Ann was trying to teach us to want more out of life. Be different, take risks, have fun! But don’t be plain or boring... Don’t be common. With 12 grandkids, I kinda got lost in the shuffle a lot but it doesn’t mean that I didn’t pick up a thing or several from Grandmother Ann... I love the color turquoise in any variation. In the last house my Grandmother lived in (the big white house on Cauthen Circle), the shutters and front door were

the loveliest shade of aqua...So was the carpet in the formal living room. She loved junk! She collected it, bought it, and there was always a project! It was the thrill of the hunt, but she was also just a collector. She liked stuff! She was unique. She did things her way and while I might not be marching to the exact same beat as her drum, I believe she would be proud of the woman I have become. So by any definition you may have for the word, common is not a way to describe me, and you can thank my Grandmother for that!

LWPOA Enjoys Busy May on Lake Wedowee AREA KIDS AND FAMILIES ATTEND KIDS FISHING DAY On May 18 the lakeshore at Rice Pavilion on Lake Wedowee was covered up with area kids and their families for the Annual Kids Fishing Day event organized by LWPOA. Kids, ages 2 through 15 angled for catfish furnished by Handley High School Outdoor Education Project and stocked inside nets placed by Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Wildlife and Fish Division. In addition to fishing the kids enjoyed games, prizes food and refreshments including drinks, chips, cookies and the tasty hot dogs cooked by the Sheriff â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Department and Judge Diamond. Trophies were awarded for first fish, biggest fish, and most fish along with a rod and reel combo for each winner. Each kid received a bag of fishing gear.

HUNDREDS ATTEND FIRST SUMMER ON THE LAKE EVENT

The Rice Family graciously provided the Pavilion for the event. Randolph County Rescue Squad and Southern Ambulance Transport stood by for emergency services

Hundreds of visitors and exhibitors attended the inaugural Summer on the Lake event at Wedowee Marine South on the Lake.

The exhibitors spoke with visitors, handed out materials, samples and contributed door prizes for the event. Randy Morris and his family graciously provided the Wedowee Marine South facility for indoor and outdoor exhibition space and parking. The venue was perfect, allowing the huge upstairs space for indoor air conditioned comfort and outdoor spaces for larger exhibits. Sheila Smith, Land Manager for Lakeshore Operations for Alabama Power Company thanked the exhibitors for their participation and contributions and expressed plans to continue the event on an annual basis.

The Cowboy Rides Again for 14th Annual Sheriff’s Rodeo

That expression will come to life for many people June 30 and July 1, as the 14th Annual Randolph County Sheriff ’s Rodeo takes center stage. In what has become an event to see for the 4th of July weekend in Randolph County, the Sheriff ’s Rodeo, in addition to being an exciting and fun time for all ages, will provide some of the much needed funding for equipment for the Sheriff ’s Department. The proceeds of last year’s Rodeo went to the purchase of Kevlar helmets and upgraded bulletproof vests capable of protecting its wearer from shots fired from long-range rifles. Sheriff Cofield saw the necessity of the upgraded equipment after an incident right after last year’s Rodeo in which one of his officers was wounded. He estimated the cost of the upgrades were around $18,000. Without the Rodeo, the Randolph County Sheriffs Department would not have it. “It takes a lot of work to make this event happen and we couldn’t do it without the numerous volunteers

This year’s show is a production of 4L and Diamond S Rodeo, founded in 1985 by rodeo cowboy Charlie Lowry, the company has grown from five small productions the first year to producing events all over the country including the PRCA, IPRA and the NIRA. These events are the real deal with bull riding, calf roping, and all the other events that both seasoned rodeo goers and first timers all come out to see. Lowry has partnered with David Simpson to provide stock for the rodeo. Simpson’s stock has been featured in shows from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Odessa, Texas to San Antonio to Fort Worth Texas and many stops like Wedowee, Alabama to name just a few. The 4L and Diamond S Rodeo

provided bulls for the PRCA Xtreme Bullriding as well as the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. This year’s show will feature Seven Time Rodeo Clown of the Year Dusty Myers , The Diamond D Drill Team and David Sharp, a renowned rodeo announcer. The beautiful , Diamond D Cowgirls sparkle under event lights and are followed by fans throughout the south. Their fun loving and energetic personalities are guarantees that the crowd will be screaming for more. With flashy costumes and horses these beautiful cowgirls will be available for photos and crowd interaction. David Sharp will be your ring announcer… will be announcing from the ring on horseback providing an up close and running description of the action in the arena. Sharp has been featured on ESPN and the PRCA tour. Growing up watching rodeos from behind the chutes, instead of in the grandstands, rodeo was bred into him with his father being a competitor and bull fighter. “I began riding from an early age, but my passion was to always protect the fallen riders. I started fighting bulls at the age of thirteen and have never looked back,” smiled Dusty. His career as a daring bull fighter lasted a little over twelve years before his desire of wanting to entertain audiences took over. “I love meeting new people and traveling and in today’s times I love nothing more than being able to put a smile on not only kids faces, but their parents also. If I can make someone laugh and they forget about everything else for a while that makes my day.” It didn’t take long for Dusty to become one of the top clowns in the business; with a seeming less funny personality that came naturally. “I’m always working on new acts and skits to entertain my audiences. I grew up watching the likes of Lecile Harris and others, which I learned a lot from, but like to make my acts my own.” All his hard work and passion for his newly chosen career has paid off with four ‘Clown of the Year’ titles under his belt and being the barrel man at the IFR five times. Now having worked over 15 finals in the past five years, if you ever get to see Dusty’s slapstick comedy routine, you’ll leave with a smile. Show dates are June 30 and July 1 starts at 7 p.m. with gates opening at 5 p.m. Admission is $10.00 per person with children under 3 admitted free. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Randolph County Courthouse. “In previous years, the show turnout has been standing room only, and while we are looking for ways to increase the seating capacity, I would strongly recommend buying your tickets in advance and arriving early”, Chief Deputy Billy Lane stated. 13 LAKE WEDOWEE LIFE 2017

Lake Wedowee’s Bargain Hunters

You might recognize Chris and Jenny Elliott as the couple featured on HGTV’s Lakefront Bargain Hunt Renovation Lake Wedowee episode. Or, considering they have been regulars to Lake Wedowee for more than six years, you might have just seen them around town. “HGTV was definitely an experience,” The Elliotts’ both said. “We weren’t too sure about it at first, but we really like Crystal Barnes (their agent with Hunter Bend Realty) and we knew it would give her some great exposure… So we said why not.” After a few video interviews between the producers, the Elliott’s and their children as well as Barnes, the group was selected to be featured on the first season of Lakefront Bargain Hunt Renovation. According to the website, the series is HGTV’s new lakefront lifestyle program that explores what happens after families purchase their lakeside vacation home and shows how they turn them into their ideal family getaway.”

Chris and Jenny Elliott were featured on HGTV’s new series Lakefront Bargain Hunt Renovation in late April. The couple and their two children enjoy their home on Lake Wedowee year round when schedules allow.

The house the Elliott’s purchased was built by longtime builder Tommy Friedel as his personal home. “I loved this house because of the view,” Jenny said. “Chris wasn’t convinced in the beginning…but when we first looked at the house he met Mrs. Friedel. She was the most precious lady and we spent like an hour with her that day. Then Mr. Tommy and Chris bonded over the construction of the house and our vision kinda took off from there.” “I really wanted the fireplace to be the focal point,” Chris added. “I think that’s really the biggest transformation… That and the bathroom.” As far as the television show, HGTV tried to keep it as realistic as possible the Elliott’s said.

The couple really wanted to open up the view of the lake from their property and worked extensively with Alabama Power Shoreline to make their dreams a reality.

“The film crew picked the other two houses that we looked at,” Jenny said. “And they got our real reactions to looking at those houses for the first time.” It was also a process that spanned more time than the hour that was shown on television. “There were some very long days of filming,” Jenny said. “ We had to be ready at 7 am and filmed until 7pm.

During filming, HGTV required the couple remove any religious aspects from the home which included artwork from the walls. “And, there were so many takes. They wanted our real reactions, but there might have been several takes to get everything else just right. “I think our kids did pretty well on screen but they didn’t enjoy it,” Jenny said. “Some parts were real tedious. But, overall it was a lot of fun and a once in a lifetime experience.” The home located on more than 300 feet of waterfront has all the charm of a rustic log cabin, but the conveniences of modern living. “On the show I called that Rustic Chic… I don’t think Chris has really figured out what it means yet,” Jenny laughed. The Elliott’s did extensive renovations to the home and have been using it since January of this year. 20 LAKE WEDOWEE LIFE 2017

“I am really looking forward to using the fireplace,” Chris said. “We got to use it a couple of times already but this winter it is going to be great!” The Elliotts have been regulars to Lake Wedowee for quite some time having first purchased a camper (or as they called it “The Tramper”) over in the Ratley’s Cove area of Lake Wedowee. “We loved our park model that Chris added a big screen porch to it, but we outgrew it as our children got bigger and more friends came a long for our quick trips to the lake!” The Elliotts’ had their first big gathering at the new house Memorial Day weekend and their vision came to life. “It was impromptu, but it was my imagination coming to life,” Jenny said. “There were kids every where and we were all in different areas enjoying the lake! We couldn’t have asked for more.”

Jenny coined the phrase “rustic chic” on the television show. It is a perfect description of their updated log home.

In 2016, we launched a Pets of Wedowee Photo Contest and while we have had a blast with Penny the Goldendoodle as our Lake Wedowee Life Pet of the year, it is almost time for her to pass her crown on to the next Lake Wedowee Life Pet of Wedowee! As of June 10, we will begin accepting nominations for this extremely fun contest.

Up on Crimson Creek Not many houses on Lake Wedowee claim influences from Idaho, but “Crimson Creek” owned by David and Lynne Smith does. “The house is a mashup of things we had seen Charles Thompson do in some of his prior construction, things we liked in a house we had in Idaho and then some things Lynn found on (the website) pinterest,” David said. “It has a little bit of influence from all of those things and we like to think it is uniquely ours but there is a house probably identical to it somewhere,” David laughed.

The house located in Wedowee Creek Estates is next door to Lynne’s mother and they had owned the lot for more than a decade before building on it.

The Smiths enjoy sharing their home with their fur babies RC and Milo (That’s as Sweet as the Tea). They also have a few more cats that guard the property.

“We actually bought it when we were still living in Idaho,” Lynne said. “Then in 2011, we moved on this street to establish residency for our son Josh to go to the University of Alabama.

“Well, David commuted to Idaho for a few years and we ended up buying a house on top of the hill (affectionately known as the House on Blueberry Hill).

“Lynne’s Dad, Ralph (who had the nickname of “The Guidefather” because he could always find the fish) had the family on the water all of their early lives,” David said. “And when they moved to Wedowee in the 1980s that continued. Lynne and I both love to fish and play on the water and could think of nowhere better to be than “up the creek.”

“Well after 20 months of lot clearing and construction, we have moved to our third house on the same street… I bet not many people can say that,” Lynne laughed.

When it came to picking a builder for their dream home, Lynne and David began the search by flipping through the pages of Lake Wedowee Life.

drive by,” David said. “We started calling numbers and some of the builders never bothered to return our call.” In the meantime, the Smiths would ride around Lake Wedowee looking at houses and what they liked and disliked about each of them. “Charles Thompson was one that returned our call,” David said. “We had several houses we liked on the outside and we wanted to show Charles… Well, we meet and he takes us around to see some of his work. The first house is one of the houses we had liked by water. “Not only that, but he had the keys to the house with him. That spoke volumes to us that the homeowners trusted him with their keys after his job was done.” Now, Charles Thompson is a lot of things and great at many of them… drawing house plans to impress and architect is not one of them. “So we were able to sit down with Charles and plan things out on a dry erase board,” David said. “We would draw and erase until we got it like we wanted it.” The end result is a craftsman style home with some definite lake influences. “We deliberately chose 3 porches so we could make use of our deck

in almost every situation,” David Smith said. “Screened, covered and open allows us to enjoy the deck all day - and in any season. “We’ve only used the outdoor fireplace a couple of times but look forward to crisp fall nights with a fire 30 LAKE WEDOWEE LIFE 2017

and fresh air only steps away from the kitchen,” David said. “Charles and his team were great to work with and we would recommend them to anyone looking for a builder that really cares about the happiness of the home owner. We always felt we were in good hands.”

Face Off Standing in the driveway at the house in Delta, all I could do is stare at the old truck and wonder what terrible thing I must have done to deserve this. I’ve put myself, my family and my friends in danger. I could care less about the gold at this point. I just want all of this to go away and wake up from whatever dream state I must be in. But no, this is not a dream and it isn’t just going to go away. Then my phone rings…. “Another blocked number, I’m getting sick of these telemarketers” I thought to myself as I brought the phone to my ear. “Is your this Norton?” the peace or buy some voice said. “Yes, this is Charley Norton, caskets. The Choice is what do you people Yours. want now? I’m getting sick of y’all calling..…..”. The voice broke in “I don’t know who you think you are or who you’re dealing with but you need to shut up and listen!! I’m going to burn your house down! I’m going to burn down your family’s houses! I’m going to destroy everything you care about and then, when I’m done boy, I’m going to kill you. But by the time I’m done wrecking your world, you’ll be begging me to do it. You messed with the wrong family and you’re going to pay for it.”

A chill rushed through my body. My mouth opened but I couldn’t make a word come out of it. I don’t think I’ve been more terrified. This was Willard Earl and I know he

isn’t kidding. “Are you listening boy?” he said “Cat got your tongue? Well, that’s good cause I got your dog. I also got that big boy that beat up my nephew and I’m just getting started. If you want this to end, this is what you have to do. You get all the money and gold you got, and the map JJ gave you and you sign all the deeds over to me and I mean ALL of them, along with the deed to your house and all the money you got in the bank. You give me all of that and I will spare your world but you have to give me one more thing…….. and that’s you…… What? You think you’re gonna do what you’ve done to me and just walk away? I don’t think so. Like I said, you messed with the wrong family and you’re going to pay for what you did. You got today to get it done. If your phone rings, answer it. I don’t call twice. Meet me in town tomorrow morning at 8 sharp. Make your peace or buy some caskets. The choice is yours.” The phone went dead. B was sitting in his truck. I told him we needed to go to the shack as quick as we can. I had a lot to do. He nodded and I got in Jimmy Jacks truck. We drove as fast as we could or rather as fast as I could. B just had to keep up. At the dock, I told B that the skis aren’t what they used to be and to be careful. I couldn’t have understated enough. They were rockets. The rotary engines spun up to 9000 rpms. They were so powerful that they couldn’t suck the water in fast enough and started to cavitate. 90 mph was nothing but they weren’t designed for that so were a handful to keep straight. We got to the shack in 5 minutes. Normally a 30 minute ride. Once at the shack, I ran up hollering for Big A but he wasn’t there. Then B walked up and grabbed me by the shoulder. “He isn’t here and you know it” he said “Yes, I know all about it. I cloned your phone two weeks ago and heard the whole conversation in my truck. What I didn’t see was Willard Earl coming up behind me with a pistol at my head. Above, I heard the chopping blades of a helicopter. I turned around to see Willard Earl was down, hog tied and on the ground with B George’s foot on his neck. B looked up at me and said “Dude, you don’t think I know what a potato should taste like? Come on! Next time, trust me. But there better not be a next time. This is exhausting!” The police department had the Manus gang cuffed and loaded and were walking my way to get Willard Earl, along with the rest of the town. I stood up and asked that they all give me a minute. I wanted to talk to Willard Earl. I sat down on the sidewalk where Willard Earl was. He looked at me with pure hatred. He opened his mouth to speak, but like I was the day before when he called me, he couldn’t get a word out. I said to him “Willard, I don’t know what your father must have said to you to hate Jimmy Jack so much, I really don’t. Jimmy Jack wasn’t really your cousin, I know that. But he thought of you as a brother. He still felt that way even after he realized that it was probably your father that murdered his father. And all over greed! Oh, I’m sure your father said it was because of what the Cherokee did to the creeks but Jimmy Jack knew better than that and so should you. And even if you believed that hogwash, it was something that neither you nor Jimmy Jack had any part of other than the blood running through your veins. Jimmy Jack was a kid when all this started and no kid should go through what your father put him through. You knew, Willard, that your father abused Jimmy Jack and you did nothing. Like I said, Jimmy Jack thought of you like a brother. He was closer to you than anyone he ever met in his whole life and you turned your back on him. All because an evil man raised by an evil man, raised by an evil man, told you to. He would have given you everything if only you’d of asked. Look how he lived. Did he live like someone who wanted wealth? No, but you couldn’t ask, could you? You couldn’t because of the hatred you had for him. And all over nothing! Nothing, Willard! What did he do to you? Nothing! You hated him because someone told you to. He gave it all to me because I was the closest thing to family that he had. Me, a guy that he met on the side of the road. He died thinking I was the only friend he had. You killed him, Willard. You killed him from the inside out and over what? Gold? Revenge? What? Because I want to know! You’re going to jail. Your family is going to jail. You are going to lose everything and that is what you deserve. You deserve it because of what you’ve done and what you made your family do. They will all suffer from your prejudice and nothing good will come from it. You could’ve broken the cycle, broken the chain of the hatred. But you didn’t, and it’s all on you. Maybe someone will learn. Maybe someone in your family will be a bigger person than you were. I hope so. I hope so because the same fate will fall on anyone that follows your path. And at my side was B, the best friend a person could have along with Big A, beaten but not beat down. This was the worst and best day of my life.

A Daddy’s Love

Back in April, while I was barricaded down in the back of my basement waiting for storms to pass, I began to think about a father’s love. Specifically, the love our Heavenly Father has for us. Anyone who has spent more than 15 seconds with me, most likely knows that I don’t do storms. Never have. What I mean by “I don’t do storms” is: sweat pours from my arm pits, my heart races out of control and I cover my head and scream with every bump from the thunder. My usual protocol during a storm is to run to my Dad. I’m 36. Judge me if you must, but I will always be a daddy’s girl. When storms would come, I sought safety and comfort at my parents’ home. It never mattered what time of day or night that the storm alarm would blast its warning; Dad would go to his door, unlock it and wait for me to barge in. Without fail, he was there with arms open wide. If I’m going to have even a remote chance to get any rest on a stormy eve, it will be in the shelter of my father’s house. I have lived near my parents, until last fall, when my husband, two sons and I moved. We only moved a few miles away, but it was far enough that when the storms come I have to pull up my

“big girl knickers” and utilize my own basement. I’m not a fan….just saying. During my emotional and somewhat over dramatic visit to my basement during the storms this spring, I began to speak to the Lord. Let’s be honest, it was more like a really pitiful attempt to negotiate a different weather plan with the Creator of the Universe....anyway, He and I were communicating, and I began to see just how the Heavenly Father really does the same thing for me with my life storms that my dad does for me

when I’m being a baby and it thunders. Storms of life come. They just do. They typically have intentions to make us uneasy or unsettled. If you are a Christian, you have been in a storm. My money is that you are in one of these three places: going into a storm, in the middle of a storm, or you just came out of a storm. Those stormy moments are the ones when the Heavenly Father walks to His door, unlocks it, and waits with His arms open wide for us to barge in, to seek shelter and comfort in our Father’s

house. This is where 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (NLT) brings my soul great strength; it says “Each time he said, My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness. So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” Refuge from the storms of life is found in Jesus. When that uneasy wind begins to blow, I can call on Jesus and He is right there. That personal prayer life with the Almighty surpasses anything I could possibly describe. When I enter into the presence of the Lord, I instantly have peace. The best part is that I can have words, or I cannot. I can speak, sob, babble, or just sit in complete silence. He meets me right where I am, and He his love consumes me. Have you ever truly tried to just sit and be held by the Father? Go ahead, take a break, and go and be held. Matthew 11:28-30 (NSV) reads, then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear and the burden I give you is light.” Did you see that? That is a promise to find rest for your soul. It’s a promise. So, if the storms of life are too much.... the bank account is not as large as the stack of bills...the pantry and the refrigerator are barren...you can’t put the bottle down...you entertain that website more than you entertain your spouse...you spit out word vomit on another human, and that conversation plagues you endlessly day after day, Jesus said it right there at the very beginning of Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” He’s asking you to come. Will you? God’s got this. Go seek your shelter in The Father’s House. I’m a huge believer in music for the soul. I’m going to leave you with a little music homework today. Red, White & Blueberry

Blueberry picking season is upon us and nothing says “summer” and “Fourth of July” more to us than a homemade blueberry pie. My grandson, Logan is a nut about blueberries and could eat them by the bucketful-- and if I can snag some away from him I will make him a blueberry pie.

•

They should almost fall off the branch into your bucket. The fruit is often covered with a light white coating called “bloom,” which helps prevent deterioration. Water on blueberries accelerates rotting, so don’t wash them until you are ready to use them.

If you are lucky enough to have a “pick your own” farm close by, you already know how much better freshly picked berries taste. What better way to showcase those luscious berries than a blueberry pie.

•

If you store freshly picked berries in the refrigerator, unwashed and covered, they should last up to two weeks.

•

Freezing is always a good option, too. The best method I’ve found to freeze berries is to first place them in a jellyroll pan in a single layer. Place the pan in the freezer for a couple of hours. Once the berries are frozen remove them from the freezer and put them into a ziplock bag or in a freezer proof bowl and return them to the freezer. This helps prevent them from sticking together.

If you plan to visit a local blueberry farm, here are a few tips that will help you enjoy the fruits of your labor. •

Fresh blueberries are in their prime from late-May through early-August depending on the weather.

•

Plan to go early morning when the weather is cooler.

•

Wear comfy clothes and shoes. A belt is handy to have. You can hook the bucket handle to the belt, this frees both hands for picking.

•

Don’t forget to wear sunscreen.

•

When picking, select berries that are firm, dry, plump, smooth-skinned, and completely blue, deep blue.

Now that you have some guidelines for choosing the best blueberries, doesn’t a homemade blueberry pie sound like pure bliss? I thought so. This blueberry pie recipe isn’t totally homemade (graham cracker crust), but it is sure to make everyone’s tummy happy and have them asking for more.

Blueberry Bliss Pie Mascarpone Filling: 8 oz. mascarpone or cream cheese 1 cup cool whip 1/2 cup powdered sugar 1 teaspoon white vanilla flavoring 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Blueberry Filling: 3/4 cup sugar 4 tablespoons cornstarch 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup cold water 5 cups fresh blueberries, divided 1 tablespoon butter 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 9 oz graham cracker pie crust Strawberries for garnishing

Mascarpone Filling: Mix Mascarpone, cool whip, sugar, vanilla and lemon juice until well combined with an electric mixer. Pour into the graham cracker pie crust and spread evenly. Place in the fridge while you make the blueberry filling. Blueberry Filling: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, cornstarch, salt and water until smooth. Add 3 cups blueberries. Bring to a boil, cook and stir until thickened and bubbly, approximately 2 minutes. Remove from the heat. Add butter, lemon juice and remaining berries, stir until butter is melted. Cool. Pour on top of Mascarpone cheese filling. Garnish with strawberries. Refrigerate until serving. Notes: The blueberry filling will be thick. This is nothing to be concerned about. Adding the butter and lemon juice will thin it some. Omit the mascarpone cheese filling and use just the blueberry filling for a classic old fashioned homemade pie. Layer graham cracker crumbs, mascarpone cheese filling and blueberry filling in dessert cups for a light fruit parfait.

What’s the best thing you got from your parents? My parents instilled in me the importance of honesty and integrity. I try my best to pass these traits onto my son.

I enjoy being able to help guide my customers through the ins and outs of buying and selling real estate here. Its really second nature for me because I know all the local people that make this

area turn. It’s still small enough that neighbors know each other and help each other. That’s what Wedowee is really all about.

What is the funniest or most odd thing you have experienced as a real estate agent? I had this little guy come in the office that wanted me to look selling about 10 acres for him that he inherited. I obtained the information on the property and told the guy I would do some reach on it and could we look at the property the next day around noon. He agree to the time and meeting place and was very excited to have me help him. The next day I went out and met the guy at a local store. I had already discovered the property wasn’t in a very desirable area and it was land locked (had no road frontage). I was hoping it had an access road because it was about 3/4 mile back in the woods. So I meet the guy at the store and followed him to the side of the road where he stops and says this little road leads to the property. Now this little road was in a kudzu field and had not been cut in a while. Driving my truck seemed to be a better option then walking, so I ask him if he’d like to ride with me and he agreed. The road was rough but passable and the property didn’t even have an easement to use the road. We came to a drain pipe that had been washed out and the guy says this is it. His pasture as he described hadn’t had livestock in it if years if ever. The briars and bushes were head high and the rest of the property had already had the timber cut. This was really rough property really rough. So the guy is excited and ask so how much can I get for my place? I replied “ its going to bring between $600$800/acre. Before I got $800 out of mouth this guy started yelling and screaming it was worth $10,000 an acre. I tried to reason with the guy and asked why did he think it was worth so much and he got madder and then started jumping up down like a kangaroo while still screaming its worth $10,000. Now at this time I think I need a little distance from this nut. So I start easing away from him and he says why are you trying to steal from me? I say sir this place will never be worth $10,000 and I wish you luck on it. He then gets even more mad and starts throwing rocks in the creek while screaming and jumping like a kangaroo. I make it across the creek and to my truck and I am trying to decide if I want this nut in my truck. I feel sorry for the guy who is still throwing rocks, screaming I will get $10,000 and acre for it while jumping up and down like a kangaroo. So I say Listen!! he stops and I say can I give a ride out of here? He starts right back throwing rocks screaming NO NO NO NO NO NO I will get $10,000 acre for it while jumping up and down like a kangaroo. So What did I do??? I left the nut in the woods and couldn’t believe some folks are that crazy, I meet one though. 10 Things Everyone Assumes About Agents That Aren’t True

Real estate is a prolific profession. Everyone either knows a real estate agent, or is connected to one through six (probably less) degrees of separation. Between friends and relatives, and the stereotypical representation of real estate agents on television and in pop culture, the general public has a adopted some assumptions about agents that are very far from the truth. Here are ten things that people assume about real estate agents that just aren’t true:

1. They make “easy money” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. The only people who could ever possibly make the case that being an agent is an easy way to make money are those who have never done it. It’s hard, uncertain work, with many instances of months wasted on a deal that doesn’t ever close. The only thing easy about it is reading the Lighter Side of Real Estate.

2. They are required to show you houses even if you’re not pre-approved There are definitely agents who will show you houses without a pre-approval (or at minimum a prequalification), but an agent is not required to, and most experienced agents probably won’t. The ability to qualify for financing dictates whether or not a deal is even possible, so an agent is simply saving you from disappointment (or worse) by asking you to get pre-approved.

3. Zillow is more accurate than they are It would be wonderful if Zillow (and similar websites) were accurate in their home valuations, but if you compared their results to actual appraised values, in most cases you’d burst out laughing. Real estate agents want you to get as much money as possible for your house, but oftentimes reality gets in the way. Trust your realtor to give you a fair market assessment for your house…at least more than you trust Zillow.

4. They make huge commissions The popular real estate flipping shows on cable, and Million Dollar Listing have given everyone the impression that real estate agents are rolling in the dough. Most real

estate agents wish that this was true, but reality is much different. The median US existing home sale price in December 2016 was $234,900, which means after splitting the commission and paying their broker, an agent took home about $3500 on the transaction, not including all marketing and related expenses. As a monthly income, this adds up to about $40,000 per year. Not exactly huge.

5. They’re an unnecessary evil Many people have made the argument that real estate agents are unnecessary and are merely an impediment to a more efficient “For sale by owner” model of real estate. The best way to eliminate this misconception is to try selling your house yourself. There is nothing more sobering than desperately Googling state and federal real estate laws as some unkempt stranger is knocking on your door asking you questions about your FSBO house.

6. They’re sleazy Unfortunately, real estate agents have joined the ranks of lawyers, politicians, and salespeople in some of the public’s assumptions about their trustworthiness. The financial collapse of 2008 exacerbated this perception. Thankfully, the market correction also weeded out most of the unsavory

elements in the business. The truth is, real estate agents are honest, hardworking people, making a living like any other profession. And just like any other profession, there are a few bad apples that unfairly give the others a bad name.

7. They’re uneducated This misconception really gets under most agents’ skin, because not only do many agents have degrees (and advanced degrees in quite a few cases), but the knowledge required to pass a real estate exam is substantial. There are many people who are unable to get their licensing because of an inability to pass the licensing tests, which makes the concept of an “uneducated” agent laughable.

8. They want you to pay more for a house so they can make more money If you truly looked at the math involved in calculating real estate commissions, you’d never utter this falsehood again. An agent getting you to pay $10,000 more for a property will net that agent approximately $150, which barely covers the cost of gas required to drive to and from your appointments. The truth is that an agent absolutely wants you to buy a house. What’s not true is that they want you to pay more for one.

9. They’re mostly part-timers or bored housewives

If you ask the average person to describe the archetypal real estate agent, they’ll probably say it’s an older married woman who is looking for something to do in her free time. Ugh. This is stereotyping at its finest, and ignores the hundreds of thousands of male agents, the hundreds of thousands of full-time agents, and the hard-working primary bread winners that make up the real estate workforce. Sure, the stereotypical agents do exist, but they’re the exception to the rule.

10. All they want from you is the deal Yes, agents want your business. But true professional real estate agents want to be your lifelong real estate advisor. They want you to think of them whenever you or your family and friends have any real estate questions.
