This issue is dedicated to the memory of Jessi Norwood, the owner of Hot Damn Jelly Company. Her jelly was an original Southern Brand Favorite first featured in our 2014 Holiday edition of Southern Holiday Life. Jessie was an amazing personality that did not know the meaning of the word “no.” She was a one-woman show and was so much more than her 29 years allowed her to be. Her smile was infectious and her work ethic was mesmerizing! There was no stopping her when she set her sights on a goal. The world lost Jessie on Dec. 24, 2016, but her spirit will continue to live with each and every one of us that knew this firecracker of a woman!

Enjoy Life!

Hundreds gather for inaugural Alabama women’s conference More than 250 women gathered in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on March 4 for the inaugural Lean On: Alabama Lifestyle & Leadership Conference. With close to two dozen speakers on the agenda, the day was packed from the morning’s opening session all the way through the closing reception that evening. Lean On: Alabama is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that brings women together to form intergenerational partnerships by building an innovative statewide platform which promotes collaboration, development, and investment in each other and the community. The conference aimed to provide opportunities for the women of Alabama to build relationships while sharing knowledge and experiences, along with learning from others who have forged a path as leaders in their families, communities, churches, government, and businesses. “The inaugural Lifestyle and Leadership Conference marked the beginning of what Lean On: Alabama hopes to do in our state,” said Mary Lee Caldwell, president and co-founder of the organization. “We are already seeing relationships that were formed at the conference take shape and help people grow personally

Keynote Speakers for Lean On: Alabama’s Lifestyle and Leadership Conference included, (top from left) Carolyn Rush, Liz Huntley and Peggy Orenstein as well as Amber Aziza (above) and former University of Alabama Gymnastics Coach Sarah Patterson.

Lean On: Alabama provides a statewide network of small groups called Iris Circles. Iris Circles will be established in communities across Alabama. Comprised of small, intergenerational groups of women, Iris Circles will offer opportunities for fellowship, collaboration, and support. Participants can sign up to join a circle through the website or in person at one of our events. The process is simple: fill our a quick survey about yourself and your availability to meet, and we will match you with a small group of 5-15 women who will meet regularly with one another. There is no set agenda for the meetings other than to gather for fellowship and support, so no two group will be alike. Iris Circles are named for the flower which represents what we want all of our participants to gain from being involved with Lean On: Alabama: Wisdom Hope Faith Friendship To find an iris circle near you or to start your own, visit www. leanonalabama.com

Coach Sarah Patterson and her daughter Jessie after the Inaugural Lean On: Alabama conference and professionally. This is only the beginning, and I cannot wait to see where this road takes us.” Keynote speakers for the event included Amber Aziza, Liz Huntley, Peggy Orenstein, Sarah Patterson and Carolyn Rush. Thirty-six additional speakers also conducted breakout sessions on a variety of topics. Each speaker throughout the day aimed to impart their wisdom in some way – from strategy and tactics to inspiration and goal-setting. “Be strict about your goals. Be flexible about how you get there,” said Carolyn Rush, director of brand strategy for Worn Creative. “If you see another women up for a promotion, offer her a recommendation. Encourage her. Do whatever you can to stand together.” Following the conference, Lean On: Alabama will continue working around the state, including launching Iris Circles, which will be small intergenerational groups of women offering opportunities for fellowship, collaboration, and support. “After our inaugural conference, I am more excited than ever about fostering intergenerational networks of women supporting each other,” said Marsha Grady, vice president and co-founder. “Our conference attendees included women of all ages, colors, faiths, cultures, and walks of life. We learned together and from each other – and left inspired to inspire and empower each other in all areas of our lives.” To learn more about Lean On: Alabama, visit www.leanonalabama.com.

Shea Goldstein is a self-proclaimed Southern Belle who’s thinking about what’s for dinner while eating lunch. She began her blog in 2010 as a way to document her recipes for her children and family members as well as share her food and culinary experiences with others.

It’s almost Cinco de Mayo time!

Good Golly Let’s Make Tamales

That means lots of yummy Mexican fare...tacos, enchiladas, salsas and, of course, margaritas. So, just for y’all...I made tamales. Yep, tamales. Simple tamales. I finally figured out how to make them! I’m so excited - I’ll be honest, I used to absolutely hate them. When I was young, I just saw them as these slippery mushy looking things that slid out of a can. They just seemed like pure nastiness. I also made you margaritas - but let’s get through these awesome badboys first. So, once I started really embracing the whole culinary world, I opened myself up to all kinds of things that I had misconceptions about. It’s funny how things change when you take things into your own hands. Now that I’ve made them myself, I actually really like them. Trust me, I have a feeling that my friends and family probably don’t enjoy dining out with me anymore. I didn’t mean to become a restaurant snob, but apparently it happened somewhere along the way. These are actually fun to make, and you don’t even need a tamale steamer. I used a wire rack on top of a baking pan halfway filled with water and steamed them on the stovetop covered with foil. It’s so easy. One of the things I love about these is the versatility – they’re kind of like tacos or burritos; fill them with whatever you want. I made chicken filled tamales, and 16

SOUTHERN HOLIDAY LIFE

I rubbed them with this amazing Chili Margarita Marinade and Seasoning from Red Dog Rubs. I also put some with salsa verde in some of them, and a few with enchilada sauce, and both were awesome. I found rolling them with the corn husks to be difficult until I watched a YouTube video – it’s SO easy. Don’t let it intimidate you. It may take a couple of practice runs, but I promise it’s not difficult. Another key to making these is getting the consistency with the masa flour. You can’t use just regular cornmeal; that doesn’t work. Masa is pre-treated with lye – that’s the difference. It’s

Simple Tamales Tamales 2 cups Masa flour 1 1/2 cups water (more if consistency is too thick) 1 tsp salt 1/2 lb. chicken, cooked and shredded Chili Margarita Marinade and Seasoning Corn husks (found at Mexican grocery stores and at some large chain grocery stores in the produce section) To Serve With Cilantro Enchilada sauce Salsa verde Diced jalapenos Tomatoes, diced Hot sauce Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Emerge corn husks in a large bowl filled with cold water for at least 2 hours, up to one day. Combine masa, water and salt in a stand mixer, adding water if needed, until consistency is like cookie dough. Drain husks and pat dry. Rub chicken with olive or sunflower oil and sprinkle

with seasoning; place on baking stone or cookie sheet and bake for 30 minutes. Remove and shred. Spread masa on large end of corn husk, only one one side and not spreading all the way to small end of husk. Put about a tablespoon of chicken in the center of the masa. Fold by rolling from filling side, stopping midway and folding small end up to meet the middle and

continue rolling to the end. Secure with strands of corn husks (I just tore them) or twine. Bring water to a boil in a baking pan and layer tamales on a wire rack set on top of the pan; cover with foil. Reduce heat to low and steam for 30-45 minutes, until corn husks remove easily from tamales. Serve with cilantro, jalapeĂąos, tomatoes, hot sauce and salsa verde, if desired

How to Assemble Tamales Like a Professional You start by pressing the masa dough a little at a time, swiping downward in the direction of one end of the husk. Then, you add about a tablespoon of filling and fold the ends of the masa up to meet in the middle. Then, you fold gently toward the other end of the husk and fold the thin end of the husk upwards. Then, continue rolling and secure with a thin string of corn husk or twine. I like to pinch the wide end together to keep the filling from coming out during steaming, but it’s not necessary. perfect for making corn tortillas and tamales, etc. Isn’t that frustrating? You would think cornmeal would be cornmeal, but oh well, now you know. Now that I have my method down, I’ll be experimenting with more fillings. I want to make crazy tamales – like buffalo chicken, jalapeno popper, cheeseburger and chili filled. I just have so many ideas. Now...to the Margaritas. I actually rimmed my glasses with the Chili Margarita seasoning - and it was the bomb! Just use your favorite margarita mix and tequila, rim your glasses with this addictive stuff and add limes. Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Allison Key is a co-owner of Blush Boutique in Bremen, GA. The store carries sizes 2T to 2X. Allison says they will help all the girls look amazing for spring and summer 2017.

Embrace Color this Spring Spring is just around the corner, and while the weather may be unpredictable, looking gorgeous everyday doesn’t have to be! There is such a great variety of spring fashions this year that there is sure to be something for everyone, no matter your size or shape. One of our favorite looks is returning with a brighter flare this year—floral resort wear. Think sunny, beach-side, bright hibiscus dresses and tops then combine it with a shoulder cut out or two and you have one of the hottest looks for this spring. Another of the more popular looks you can expect to see this spring and summer are seaside stripes, reminiscent of beach umbrellas or shaved ice stand awnings. Bright and bold, these will look great in either vertical or horizontal cuts. And if you have never thought your complexion would look good with yellow, think again! This spring, there is a shade for every skin type! For those of us who just cannot go that bold or need to tone it down for work, banker stripes are all the rage. That periwinkle blue and white is a timeless classic and can easily be dressed up or down. Khaki is also going to be a big deal for spring and summer; you don’t have to look like you are going on a safari, but that look is going to be right on trend as well! Add a khaki skirt to a single shoulder cut out floral blouse and look like you just walked out of the pages of Vogue magazine! A crowd favorite for spring trends this year is going to have a very romantic feel. Ruffles, soft floral prints, sheer fabrics—all things soft and feminine, are spot on this spring. And for those of us who like to live our down time in yoga pants, track pants have made a huge come back this spring. Track pants are definitely more trendy and can be dressed up or down for running errands or dinner with the girls, so consider trading in those “stretchy pants” for an updated version of comfortable! Lastly, with all the shoulder cut outs, off-shoulder looks, sheer fabrics, and unique cuts you will see this spring and summer, us modest gals might get a little nervous about a “wardrobe malfunction”. No need to be concerned ladies! Bandeaus and bralettes are where it is at this year to keep you covered while looking like a fashionista! With all these options for spring and summer, there is sure to be something for everyone! SOUTHERN HOLIDAY LIFE

Aging is a Good Thing with Dixie Belle Paint

B e l l e

Many pieces of painted furniture look better with a little age on them. The Dixie Belle Paint Company has several products that are perfect for aging furniture and giving them a rich, warm look. Two such products are Glaze & Dixie Dirt. Glaze is a thin, translucent medium that is added over painted surfaces. It has an extended drying time, which gives you plenty of time to work with it to achieve the desired look. It may be used directly over Dixie Belle Paint, or you may use it once you have used Clear Coat over the paint. Dixie Dirt is a powder which, when added to painted furniture and decorative items, gives a beautiful, warm appearance. Because it is a powder, Dixie Dirt needs a sticky surface to make it adhere. Don’t be afraid of aging! It’s easy peasy. And, it happens to the best of us!

22

SOUTHERN HOLIDAY LIFE

To use the glaze: Make sure the surface to be glazed is completely dry. For pieces with detail, use a paintbrush to add a generous amount of glaze, making sure it gets in all the grooves and crevices. Use a damp rag to gently rub away excess glaze. Continue to wipe away excess glaze until you get the look you want. For flat areas with no detail, simply dip a damp rag into the glaze, and wipe onto the surface. This may also be done with a paintbrush. To use Dixie Dirt: Cover the surface of the piece you’re working on with Dixie Belle’s Best Dang Clear Wax. Dip a paintbrush into the Dixie Dirt and give it a little tap on the container to knock off some of the excess dirt. A little goes a long way. Paint the dirt onto the piece, concentrating on the detailed and recessed areas. Use a dry rag and begin wiping away the extra dirt until you achieve your desired look. Use the dirt left on the rag and wipe onto the flat areas with no detail.

Say a Toast to Transfers Recycle empty wine bottles by turning them into decorative works of art with this easy image transfer technique.

What You Need: Wine Bottle Dixie Belle Paint Image to Transfer Rinse the bottle and remove the label. Paint the bottle with Dixie Belle Mineral Chalk Paint in the color of your choice. Paint with as many coats as necessary to get complete coverage. There are many sites online to print graphics. The image used in this project was found on The Graphics Fairy website. Once you decide on an image, resize it to fit your project, then print it out. If your image contains words, you will need to print the image in reverse. Do NOT use an inkjet printer. Cut closely around the image. Cover the printed side of the image with Dixie Belle Clear Coat, then lay it image side down on the bottle. Allow to dry for several hours or overnight. Fill a spray bottle with water and spray the image. Allow the water to soak into the paper. Using your finger, gently rub over the image to remove the paper. When dry, the image will appear cloudy if the paper is not removed completely. If this happens, continue to spray with water and rub the image until all the paper is removed and the image is clear when dry. Cover the entire bottle with Dixie Belle Clear Coat to seal the image and the paint. Add E6000 Glue around the lip of the bottle and wrap with twine. Open a new bottle of wine and say, “cheers” to your next craft project!

The Party Before the Big Day

Tis the Season… Wedding Season that is. There is so much thought and planning into the main event that sometimes the rehearsal dinner is an afterthought or forgotten all together. But the concept of the rehearsal dinner is to have a fun run through of the next day’s festivities without the stress and the pressure. In other words its a party before the party and shouldn’t be something to stress over. So in that regard, I have thrown together a laid back rehearsal dinner option that can be enjoyed without breaking the bank! Allow people to help. This one is difficult for me but your friends and family really do want to help. Get them to run your errands, set up tables and chairs, help serve or clean up after the festivities. All you have to do is ask! For decorations…Borrow. Borrow. Borrow. Your friends and family have stuff so borrow what you can. It will keep the cost down. Borrow table cloths, flower arrangements, tables, plates. You could probably even “borrow” a venue if you thought about it long enough. Remember this is supposed to be a fun time when two families become one. Embrace it and enjoy!

Baked Sweet Potato Fries 2 large sweet potatoes, cut in large olive oil ground cumin smoked paprika garlic powder seasoned salt

BBQ Chicken Sliders — Brine — 1-1/2 quarts water 1/4 cup packed brown sugar 2 tablespoons salt 1 tablespoon liquid smoke 2 garlic cloves, minced 3/4 teaspoons dried thyme — Chicken — 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts 8 teaspoons liquid smoke 1 to 1-1/2 cups your favorite hickory smoke-flavored barbecue sauce 16 slider buns or dinner rolls, split and warmed In a large bowl, mix brine ingredients. Stir to dissolve brown sugar. Reserve 1 cup brine for cooking chicken. Cover and refrigerate reserved brine. Place chicken in a large plastic bag and add remaining brine. Seal bag, pressing out as much air as possible. Place in a large bowl or lay in a 9X13 pan. Refrigerate 18-24 hours. Remove chicken from brine and place in a crockpot. Add reserved 1 cup brine and 8 teaspoons liquid smoke to chicken. Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours or until chicken is tender. Remove chicken, cool slightly and discard cooking juices. Using two forks shred chicken then stir in barbecue sauce. Return to the crockpot to keep warm until ready to serve. Serve on buns.

Preheat oven to 425 F. I never measure these ingredients. Just add till your heart is content. Drizzle potatoes with olive oil in a large bowl. Sprinkle with cumin, paprika, garlic and salt. Using hands toss the potatoes to evenly coat with oil and spices. Arrange potatoes in one layer on baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in oven on lowest rack until undersides are browned, 12-15 minutes. Turn potatoes with a spatula and bake 10 more minutes.

Coleslaw 1 package of coleslaw mix 1/4 red onion, finely sliced 1/2 cup mayonnaise 3 tablespoons cider vinegar 2 tablespoons sugar Salt and freshly ground black pepper Combine the coleslaw mix and red onions in a large bowl. In a medium bowl whisk together the mayonnaise, cider vinegar, sugar, and some salt and pepper. Then add to the cabbage mixture. Mix well to combine. Taste for seasoning. Do It Yourself Wedding Cake by Tracy Carpenter Tracy loves to bake for friends and family. She also spends as much time with her sons and grandsons as possible!

Wedding season is upon us. Nervous brides and grooms turn to caterers to make their wedding dreams come true. However, nowadays there’s a lot of hype in the world about doing things yourself… And while more and more couples are looking at DIY as a legitimate way to bring personality to their “Feeling big day, while keeping costs down. gratitude Since I no longer bake for the public, I thought for those of you and not who might be considering baking expressing your own wedding cake, I’d share a cost effective recipe that is very it is like moist and velvety and that you will actually want to eat. I will also share wrapping some tips I learned when I used a present to bake wedding cakes to help you get the most out of the experience and not without losing your sanity!

giving it.”

I baked one cake and decorated it three different ways William to illustrate that less is more. Arthur Ward Using a little fruit, flowers, greenery or ribbon is all you need to add a little elegance to any cake or tablescape. Before we get to decorating the cake, lets talk about baking it… There are tips to make that a smoother process as well. First, I am a believer in using parchment paper… Line the cake pan with it and then the cake will not stick to the bottom. Also use the cake release and put it on the sides of the cake pan with a pastry brush. Another handy trick is to use cake strips when baking. This will provide perfectly level baked cakes. You can pick them up in the baking section of most craft stores or even online. You soak the cake strips in water for 15 minutes, remove excess water and wrap strips around cake pan. Bake according to the recipe and you will have a perfectly baked cake.

When the cake is done baking there are a few options… Allow your cakes to cool no longer than 10 minutes before turning them out onto a cake board to cool completely. Or, since I like to use parchment paper and cake release, I like to let mine cool to room temperature and then cover the cake while it’s still in the pan in plastic wrap and put in the refrigerator for at least an hour. Doing this before you ice the cake will keep the cake from falling apart while icing it. When you are ready to ice the cake remove it from the fridge one layer at a time and gently shake the pan from side to side and up and down until the cake loosens from the pan. So now you are ready to dive into decorating…

Naked Cake

The first option is a Naked Cake. It’s by far the easiest option.

Pipe a thick strip of icing along the edge of the cake creating a dam. Fill the dam with more icing or your favorite cake filling. Lemon, strawberry, chocolate mousse...place next layer on and repeat. Stack your tiers add a dowel down the center of the cake then add fruit or flowers around the edges and dust with powdered sugar.

Easy Wedding Cake 1 box white cake mix 1 cup all purpose four 1 cup sugar 3/4 cups water 1/2 vegetable oil 1 cup sour cream 3 eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla flavoring Preheat oven to 325. Mix all ingredients together with an electric mixer on medium speed until well combined and the batter thickens and is smooth. Divide evenly into three 9” cake pans that have been lined with parchment paper and coated with cake release. Bake until a toothpick or knife comes out clean when inserted in the center of the cake. Approximately 30-35 minutes. Times will vary depending on your oven so keep an eye on the cakes.

Cake Release Recipe 1 cup vegetable oil 1 cup shortening 1 cup all purpose flour Mix all ingredients together with an electric mixer until well combined and not lumps are visible. This recipe can be cut down as long as you use equal parts of each ingredient. Coat cake pan with cake release using a pastry brush. Store in air tight container in the refrigerator. Lasts a very long time.

Lucy’s Buttercream Icing 2 boxes powdered sugar (sift if lumpy) 2 teaspoons white butter flavoring 1-1/4 cup Crisco shortening 1/2 cup milk or water Beat shortening a few seconds before adding other ingredients alternately. Be sure to mix well. Leftover icing can be kept in refrigerator for a long time if using water and shortening. If you use butter instead of shortening use vanilla flavoring instead of butter flavoring. This recipe will frost one 2 layer, 9-inch cake. Note: If your reception will be outside in the heat, using shortening will help the icing hold up better in the heat than butter will.

A lazy susan or cake turn table is very helpful with this technique. To start you will want to do a crumb coat of icing on a completely cooled cake tier. (You are building upon the Naked Cake instructions). The crumb coat will seal in the cake and it’s kind of like a base coat so the decorative layer of icing will stick to the cake . Put a huge amount of icing on top of the cake. Don’t hold back on this, you will move this icing around and remove most of it.

Smooth Sides

Now, spread the icing to cover the top of the cake. Try not to lift the spatula too much so you won’t have any crumbs. If you do get crumbs just wipe it off on another bowl and use those for the filling other cakes. Take some icing with your offset spatula hold it against the side of the cake at a 90 degree angle and spread it, covering the cake all around. Use your other hand to turn the lazy susan while doing this. Make sure the edges are a hanging little bit higher on the top of the cake. When the cake is covered all around, take an icing smoother and hold it against the sides again at a 90 degree angle. Turn the cake round and round while leaving the smoothing tool in the same place. It may take a few round trips before you smooth it out. Using the metal offset spatula push those overhanging edges towards the center of the cake. Repeat all around, wiping the excess buttercream to the bowl. You should have nice, clean edges. Clean the spatula and run it across the top to smooth it. Dipping the offset spatula in hot water also helps to smooth the cake. The heat helps melt the buttercream a bit. Now you can finish this look by adding ribbon around the bottom of each tier securing with a straight pin in the back and top with flowers.

Spiral Iced Cake-Once you ice your cake take your offset spatula and hold it at the bottom of the cake and start turning the lazy susan. With the spatula still pressed against the icing gradually start moving the spatula up until you reach the top of the cake. Repeat on each tier and add flowers. If you mess up just smooth the icing out and start over.

Spiral Iced Cake

A lot of this can be done in advance… That will cut down on your stress. Bake your layers up to a week before the wedding. Just wrap in plastic wrap and store in the ridge. Keep the cake refrigerated until you are ready to transport it. If you have access to a refrigerator and can deliver the day before

the wedding thats one less thing to worry about on the day of the wedding. Wedding cakes are heavier than you realize so you may want to have the help of two people on hand to move it. When driving, DRIVE SLOWLY. Any sudden stops could result in the icing falling off the cake or worse, the cake could tumble over. Something to remember is that there will always be something that will go wrong on the day of your wedding that will certainly make for a few stressful moments, but it will all work out great in the end. So best of luck with your adventure, and remember no matter what happens, what’s important is that you get to marry the person of your dreams, everything else is just the icing on the cake!

Tips to Stacking a Tiered Cake Like a Professional 1. Place the bottom tier (largest) on a cake drum or serving dish. A cake drum is 1/2-inch-thick cake board or foam board covered in foil paper that can be found at most craft stores that sell cake decorating supplies. 2. Place each tier on a cake board that corresponds to it’s size. For example, place the bottom layer of a 6-inch tier on a 6-inch cake board and the bottom layer of an 8-inch tier on an 8-inch cake board. Once baked, the cakes should shrink a bit to fit on the boards. 3. Apply a crumb coat first to each tier and place int the fridge for an hour. Then using an offset spatula and an icing smoother, fill and frost each cake. 4. Once the cakes are frosted, chill in the refrigerator.

5. For every tier, except the top tier, cut five to seven tapioca tea straws or wooden cake dowels. Insert a straw or wooden dowel into the cake. Mark exactly where the dowel reaches the top of the cake. Remove the dowel and trim. Using the first dowel as a guide, measure and cut the remaining dowels. To cut, I use scissors for the straws and if I use dowels I cut them with wire cutters. 6. Start by placing a cake board the size of the cake you want to stack on top in the center of the bottom tier. Using a knife lightly trace the cake board in the icing and remove the board. Then start placing the straws/dowels evenly spaced at least 1-2 inches inside that circle. The tops of the dowels should sit flush with the top of the cake. If they are uneven, then the cake on top of it will not sit evenly. 7. Use an offset spatula to lift and carefully place

the cakes on top of each other. Use your second hand as support, and then gently slide it out as you set the cake down. 8. Continue stacking all of the tiers. 9. To cover the seam between the cakes, fill in with frosting or simply add a decorative ribbon. 10. You will need a dowel just sort of the height of your assembled cake for the center of the cake. Measure the dowel by hold it next to the cake and marking it where you want to cut it. Once cut to length, insert the dowel in the center of the top tier. Making sure to keep the rod straight, push it through the top tier until you hit the cake board. Then use a rubber mallet or hammer to force the dowel through the rest of the cake.

Cheese Toast for GrownUps

Many a southerner has served pepper jelly atop cream cheese with crackers at social occasions, which is one of my favorites and absolutely delicious, but one day I thought, “why stop there?”

Choosing from the many appetizers and recipes we have at www.fromJennifersKitchen.com was difficult but I think these three are full of flavor and yet easy to make, which is perfect! Appetizers have my heart, so my first recipe for you has to be our ooey, gooey PMT’s made with fresh mozzarella, sweet and spicy strawberry pepper jelly, fresh sliced basil and a drizzle of aged balsamic?!?! ALL THE YESSES! Seriously this appetizer is my OBSESSION! You will not regret making these delish little bites! I do have a couple of shortcuts should you be short on time but the full recipe is worth it! Shortcut 1: Slice the mozzarella and skip the extra step of the oil & cream mix in if need be but it’s worth it if you can for that little extra oompfh! And get the good mozzarella sold in whole “balls” - trust me on this, you will never want shredded mozzarella again. If you can’t find whole mozzarella, look near the deli in your market in the gourmet cheese section. Shortcut 2: But pre-made garlic toasts at your grocers or bakery. These work in a pinch, but are usually a little dryer and crunchier than making your own which will have a bit of a chew that’s so divine!

What Was Old Is New Again... by Andy Petty

Andy Petty is a true movie lover, on a lifelong mission to see any and all films in no particular order and to know all things related to creating a motion picture that can change your life.

If 2016 proved anything for us movie-going fanatics, it was that Hollywood still has some original and creative voices to be heard and seen. Even films that are spin-offs or sequels had something fresh to add to the list. I wanted to write about the movies that are worth resurrecting and having a conversation over with thanks in part to a newer film. It was hard to pick some of the best movies from this past year that had some remote resemblance to anything else, but there are a few to discuss. Movies that reminded us about the human spirit, the will to be better and the promise of a brighter future. Zootopia, Walt Disney Pictures Animation’s Academy Award Winning adventure, follows a rabbit who leaves her small rural town to pursue a career as a policewoman in the big city. Once there she is met with many eye-opening experiences. There are different species of animals coming from all walks of life leading her to reevaluate her prejudices with certain species and having to prove herself as a female in a male-dominated field. Zootopia is disguised as a mirror of sorts to the world we live in today. Race, religion and equality are all on display here. They’re topical and important issues we are facing today and through the art of animation, audiences are able to confront their own views in the form of an exciting Disney masterpiece. Now, Zootopia is hardly the first animated film to make political and social issues an underlying topic in their films. One of my personal favorites from childhood is “An American Tale” from 1986. Produced by Steven Spielberg, its a movie that tells the tale of a family of Russian-Jewish mice who must seek asylum in America after their home and village is destroyed by cats. The cats represent the Cossacks, a group of people who basically developed what we now know as

Zootopia (2016)

Russia and the Ukraine today. The family make a harsh journey to New York City, eventually getting separated from their youngest child, Fievel, who embarks on a journey through the mean streets of the city to be reunited. Today we are faced with a refugee epidemic globally, and our leaders worldwide must work together to help them settle into an environment where they are free from persecution and violence. Released in the 80’s and using the late 1800’s as a back-drop, I never would have thought we would still see anti-Semitic attacks still occurring today. Talking about these 2 very topical, yet different animated films could make ones eyes roll. Yes, they are made to entertain us, but if done right, have a voice that transcends for generations to come.

LaLa Land (2016)

The return of the movie musical has been on a steady incline for the past 2 decades. Due in large part to “Chicago,” both stage to screen adaptations and remakes have seen a return, even if it was only 1 major film a year. Walt Disney’s animated films were void of any type of original music as well, but thanks to “Frozen” and “Moana,” they seem to be back. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone teamed up for a third time this past December for the romantic musical “La La Land” and the result was one of my personal favorites for all of 2016. Nothing is better than having 2 leading stars that play off of one another in a seemingly effortless way, elevating their skills as actors and making the audience believe every word and expression. Stone plays a struggling actress in the cut-throat world of Hollywood, Gosling is a struggling jazz musician who longs to open his own jazz club. A few chance encounters have brought them together, a little bit of song and dance added in and our romance is budding in this Tinseltown ode SOUTHERN HOLIDAY LIFE

to jazz music and Hollywood dreams. Damien Chazelle, who directed 2014’s “Whiplash,” has constructed one of the most original and exciting movies to come along for the movie musical genre in quite some time. I’ve unashamedly seen the movie 5 times in the theatre, and once you see the opening number, you will understand why. So, why did the musical all but disappear from screens for so many decades? Unfortunately, I haven’t seen many musicals from before the 70’s, my guess would be the lack of originality and the formula getting a little stale. One classic that is always on everyone’s radar is “Singin’ In The Rain.” Hollywood itself is always a welcomed co-star to any movie, especially a film about making movies. Voted AFI’s Greatest Musical of All Time, and 5th best movie ever made, 65 years later we’re still dancing to Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and the late great Debbie Reynolds. Hopefully 65 years later, “La La Land” will be just as regarded, a film capturing what it truly is like to follow your dreams. Female driven films at the multiplexes are as sparse as a musical these days, unfortunately. In 2016, we saw all-female “Ghostbusters,” mothers who just want to be “Bad Moms” for a change, and the Sci-fi and horror genre casting strong-willed women to headline, “The Shallows,” “Lights Out” and “Arrival,” respectively. “Hidden Figures,” a most welcomed and

inspiring film about 3 black women working in the male-dominated NASA Space Race during the 1960’s. Taraji P. Henson plays Kathrine Goble Johnson, a mathematician chosen to assist the Space Task Group, the first black woman to ever work on the team. The building where she is reassigned to doesn’t even have a bathroom for her based on the color of her skin, an unimaginable obstacle she must face while performing her job. Octavia Spencer plays Dorothy Vaughan, a mathematician that learns how to successfully run the first IBM 7090 computer placed at NASA. Learning in secret, she hopes to teach her colleagues so that she may save her job, as well as her team, from being replaced by a computer. Last but not least is Mary Jackson, played by Janelle Monáe, who becomes an important engineer, juggling marriage and children. “Hidden Figures” reminded me a lot about another movie about a hidden group of females that fought adversity, and that is 1992’s “A League Of Their Own.” Sure it’s baseball, not rocket science, but during World War II and the threat of the Major League shutting down, woman were asked to step up and hit one for America. They didn’t just hit, they ran, they caught and they won the hearts of the country. Geena Davis heads an all-star cast of actresses that won over audiences upon it’s initial release, but the reception continues to build over time. The American Film Institute placed it in the National Film Registry, an honor only given out to a very few select titles a year. Culturally, historically or aesthetically significant films are placed there, and I have no doubt that “Hidden Figures” will receive that honor some day. Movies can inspire us. They can open our minds to possibilities, worldly or otherworldly. They make us fall in love. They can challenge our thoughts on just about any topic. As long as humans are still living, stories will continue to be written or talked about, making way for new films every year. 2016 was a great year for them, just look at our best picture winner “Moonlight.” Here’s to 2017 and exciting new adventures in the celluloid world.

Just Wing It

Who doesn’t love a good spicy chicken wing right? The great thing about this recipe is you can make it two ways, Hot Pepper Jelly Wings and Peach Pepper Teriyaki Wings, AND it bakes in the oven! Easy and I promise this southern girl doesn’t like to skimp on her wings, so you know they are gonna be good!

Jennifer’s Kitchen Pepper Jelly Wings HOT CONFETTI WINGS 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon dried garlic powder or granules 1/2 teaspoon dried onion powder 1 teaspoon paprika 2 pounds chicken wingettes and drumettes 2 1/2 tablespoons red hot sauce 2 tablespoons butter, melted 2 tablespoons Jennifer’s Kitchen Hot Confetti pepper jelly, melted*

Tips & Tricks For milder wings use Confetti Pepper Jelly. Wingettes and drumettes are often sold separately in refrigerator section or together in freezer section. Alternate version: Peach Pepper Teriyaki Wings follow the same recipe method as the super yummy Hot Pepper Jelly Wings, except they are basted in a mixture of the following: One 11.5oz jar of Peach Pepper Jelly melted with 1/4 cup teriyaki sauce over low heat. So simple and sooooo scrumptious! We prepared both and my guests went back and forth, we couldn’t decide which we liked best! Preheat the oven to 450°. Line a large baking sheet with foil and spray with vegetable oil. DO NOT SKIP!! Helps them not stick! In a bowl, mix the flour with the salt, garlic, onion and paprika. Add the chicken and toss to coat. Spread the chicken on the baking sheet in a single layer and spray with vegetable oil. < Don’t forget! Adds to the crispy! Bake Smaller wings around 30 minutes, larger wings may need a little more time. Watch your wings for doneness or check with a meat thermometer. Turn once while cooking, until browned and crispy. Mix all three wet ingredients in a small pan and melt together. Stir well. Add the chicken wings to the sauce, coat well and serve.

Lacey Hughes loves a good party. With two little ones, she always has a reason to celebrate.

A Cowgirl & An Indian Have a Party For some people, planning a party is second nature. To the rest of us, it takes a great deal of planning and thoughtful preparation. Hopefully we can give you a little inspiration for your next event. Ava Greer and Layla Westyn love a good Birthday Party and their mom, Lacey Hughes, does too. These little loves share a birthday month and this year was very unique because the girls wanted to share a birthday party. Ava Greer and Layla Westyn love horses and both requested horses to be at their birthday party.

I felt like my party was going to be really good. My daddy and I looked for sticks and worked together to make bows for each of my party guest. I also enjoyed painting a real live horse and taking a picture with it. My party was great.

That’s all that was needed for Lacey to run with the theme, and she began scoping out the perfect place to Ava Greer make all of their birthday wishes come true. The girls all rode out to Cameron Oaks Horse Farm and agreed that it would be the perfect venue for the party.

Lacey naturally assumed the party theme would be all things horses but these two little ones each had creative ideas to incorporate making their party a true reflection of what they love. Layla Westyn, who was turning 5, had a few non-negotiables so to speak. She wanted each of her party guests to don a pink cowgirl hat with a star while she wanted to wear a purple cowgirl hat with a 76

crown and horse medals. It was clear that she wanted more of a western spin. Ava Greer, who was turning eight, loves all things tribal. She wanted dream catchers, arrows and teepees to be included in her party. Lacey could envision all of these ideas merging together to make a special cowgirls and indians themed party. Now that the venue and theme had been established the invitation came soon after. Jo Beth Robbins, owner of Prince Charming, designed and printed the perfect

invitations to tie everything together. What did we all do before Pinterest? Lacey did what so many others do and started pinning images on her board for inspiration. The girls worked closely with Lacey during the weeks leading up to the party. She consulted with each girl before finalizing anything and together they mapped out exactly what was needed. The girls felt special and very much a part of making this day a fun one.

Carrie Allen, cake extraordinaire, designed and decorated the perfect cake for the occasion merging the western and tribal elements that both Layla Westyn and Ava Greer dreamed of. Pinterest helped with ideas especially the donut hole arrows and the indian headdress. The girls and party guests also go to paint a real pony during the party as well as ride horses and shoot bows and arrows. Layla Westyn’s party guests received pink cowgirl hats while Ava Greer’s guests Indian headdresses.

Floor Cloth — Art for Your Floor What You’ll Need: CVinyl remnant Dixie Belle Mineral Paint (at least two colors) Dixie Belle Gator Hide or Clear Coat

Stencil(s) of your choice Painter’s Tape Paint brush Sponges

Step 1: Using the Dixie Belle paint color of your choice, paint the underside of the vinyl remnant. Allow to dry. Step 2: Next, stencil or free hand your design. I used the small starfish stencil from DBP. If you will be creating a pattern with your stencil, it may be helpful to trace the stencil on several sheets of paper, cut out the designs and arrange on your remnant before you begin stenciling. Choose a coordinating paint color to stencil your design. Small sponges work well. Allow the stenciled designs to dry.

Floor cloths have been around for many years. However, their purpose has changed over time. Today they are used mostly for decorative purposes. Though some floor cloths are painted on canvas material, this project shows how to use vinyl flooring remnants to achieve a beautiful piece of art that is inexpensively and simply done. They can be as small or as large as you choose. If this is your first floor cloth project, I suggest beginning with a small mat size of about 24 by 36 inches. Many flooring shops will have remnants that can be purchased for a few dollars. Step 3: You need to put a protective coating on your floor cloth. I recommend either using Dixie Belle Clear Coat or Gator Hide. The DB Gator Hide will provide excellent protection. In this project, I used three thin coats of the Gator Hide. Dampen a sponge and spread a thin coat of Gator Hide over the dry floor cloth. Allow about two hours drying time between coats to get the best results. Finally, depending on where you will use the floor cloth, you may need to use a nonslip material underneath to prevent it from moving. Your floor cloth should be placed on solid surfaces such as hardwood or tiled floors. To clean, simply wipe with a damp cloth as needed.
