Mosaic masterpiece takes shape
ECS20074RT
Alan Potter, a mosaic artist well known for his work in North Kesteven has returned to the area to help piece together another masterpiece, but this time one which will enhance the entrance of the newly refurbished Sleaford Leisure Centre. Alan’s pieces can already be seen across the district in Billinghay, Branston, Sleaford, Washingborough and Nocton, all of which have been created with the help of the community. Alan, with the support of ArtsNK spent some time in Sleaford Arcade working with residents who helped to piece the mosaic together, which will eventually lie at the entrance of
the leisure centre. Nick Jones, artsNK’S Visual Arts Manager said; “We wanted to take this fantastic opportunity to bring Alan back to NK for three reasons. Firstly, he has designed an amazing piece to go in the entrance area to the pool, which people will love and want to go and see. Secondly, we hope some of those Alan has worked with and inspired on the various village projects will come and join in and make their contribution, so the mosaic represents the whole district. Finally, the refurbished pool is a fantastic amenity for the town and beyond, and we wanted to celebrate the achievement with a special artwork.”
Alan Potter shows students of Kesteven and Sleaford High School how to cut a piece of the mosaic. Visit Sleaford Arcade every Friday; 10am to 1230pm and 130pm to 4pm to contribute to the Mosaic.
Water inspiration Water is where all original forms of life began and is necessary to sustain life. The design is of a floor mosaic measuring 9metres long x 3.5 metres at its widest, half of which is outside and stretches from the river path to the leisure centre and continues through the glass wall into reception. It is a lively mixture of dynamic pattern and trompe l’oeil (trick of the eye). The overall shape of the mosaic refers to a primitive life form, perhaps a tadpole, swimming towards the pool. The design also refers to the original swimming pool which was outdoors, unheated and filled with water from the river Slea. The “waters” contain images of eel, newt, frog, vole, dragonfly, fish, butterfly and underwater swimmers including a mermaid.
